Gothic Elements In The Power Of Words
The Power of Words is one of the most significant works of Edgar Allan Poe, who remains an
important figure in American Gothic literature. It is a small piece of work, in which a conversation
between two angels is depicted by Poe. The conversation between the two angels, Oinos and Agathos,
revolves around the idea of creation of the world by God as a one time act, and the further populating
of the world by man s free will. The conversation takes place after the humanity has become extinct
and it is futuristic in that sense. The principal theme in the short dialogue between the two angels is
that God created the universe in the beginning but it has developed since then in a different way due to
man s free will. The quest for knowledge which continues long after humanity is extinct.
The Power of Words is a work of American Gothic fiction and symptomatic of a common human fear.
The genre of Gothic literature revolves around the focus on dark, mysterious and terrifying events.
Although, Poe does not use dark, terrifying or fear evoking imagery in the work, he does manage to
respond to a common human fear of extinction or apocalypse. Romantic literature also forms part of
the style of this work, which makes it Gothic. It uses intuition, irony and mysticism to create the
atmosphere of the story. These are the elements of Romantic literature.
Power of Words: Gothic Elements
The Power of Words reinforces the theme of death and decay, which is one of the common human

Stamp Act Essay
The Stamp Act and the Appropriate Response
The American Revolution was not the consequence of any single event or any single legislation. It was
a result of some combined factors playing against the wellbeing of the colonists and imposed upon the
colonists by the British government. But a series of laws related to taxation which were passed
between 1763 and 1775 can be considered as one of the most important factors which instigated the
American Revolution. It was in respect of responding to such legislations that debate began on what
should be the appropriate nature of such response. For opined that the response to such impractical
and overburdening legislations must be vent through proper ways of discussions and deliberations

Even though the Stamp Act aroused vehement resistance and although most colonists continued to
accept the authority of the British Parliament in respect of regulating their trades, they insisted that
only their representative assemblies could levy direct, internal taxes, such as the one imposed by the
Stamp Act ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). But their plea was actually overlooked by the British government
which argued that all British subjects enjoyed virtual representation in Parliament, even if they could
not vote for members of Parliament ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). Looking at the failure of the moderates in
forcing the British government to reconsider the taxation process, the radicals started hinting on
extreme measures for repealing the Stamp Act. It is to be noted that These radical voices warned that
the tax was part of a gradual plot to deprive the colonists of their freedoms and to enslave them
beneath a tyrannical regime ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). But still there were opponents to such radicals but
such opposition failed to resist the tide of extreme resistances that would change the face of American
politics

The Era Of The American Civil War
After the American Civil War, a laissez faire government allowed for a new class of businessmen to
rise to power: those who dominated an entire industry, sometimes several markets. They were the
hallmark of the so called Gilded Age, which lasted from the end of reconstruction until the early
1900s. These men, known as Robber Barons, shaped the American economy, necessitating new laws
to be signed to limit their power . Although there were only four main Barons (John D. Rockefeller,
Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and J.P. Morgan), they controlled much of the economy with
their four respective trades: Oil, steel, railroads, and banking . Although all four were important,
Rockefeller and Carnegie stand head and shoulders above the rest, becoming among the richest and
most successful people the world has ever seen with the exception of some royalty. During the Civil
War, both the Union and Confederacy converted to Total War economies. With all industries, from
manufacturing to agriculture to textiles, focused on the war effort, many relatively new industries
grew surpassingly large. Railroads in the North grew by around 16,000 miles, an increase of nearly
75%. However, relatively small companies controlled relatively small sections of track privately. This
set the stage for Vanderbilt to begin buying up companies until he controlled one of the largest railroad
networks ever seen. The latter parts of the Civil War and the early reconstruction saw the rise of a new

Maumee Ohio Traffic Selection Process
Receiving a citation for breaking an Ohio traffic law can be disturbing, but receiving a guilty charge
can be devastating. The state of Ohio is strict when it comes to ensuring that its drivers follow traffic
laws perfectly. A Toledo OH driver stands to face several consequences if a judge finds that person
guilty of breaking traffic laws. The monetary fine is only part of the penalty. The driver may receive
points on his or her license for the violation, and the points may affect that person s life in an adverse
manner. For example, an employer may turn down a job applicant for a driving position if that person
has too many points on the license. The person s automobile insurance rates may skyrocket, as well.
Examples of Maumee, Ohio Traffic Offenses
The state of Ohio has an extensive list of traffic crimes for which a driver can commit and receive a
citation. Some of the highest point oriented charges are:
Operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol 6 points
Drag racing 6 points
Reckless operation 4 points
Driving without owner consent 6 points

she did wrong to receive the ticket. The officer will assign a court date, and the person can appear to

has a Parksmart system that a driver can use to pay a ticket. However, paying a ticket is an admission
of guilt for a traffic violation. The state will assign any points that may apply to the offense, and those

Persuasive Essay On Seatbelt Safety
There is no question that people need to wear a seatbelt, and that seat belts help keep you protected.
Seat belts help keep you safe in many different situations. For example: car accidents, unforeseen
stops, and just to restrict your movement in the car.
Seat belts do help keep you guarded in an accident. You have a higher probability of dying if you are
not wearing a seat belt. Did you know that seat belts save about 5,000 lives a year? That to me is just
crazy. How many deaths do you think it will take for people to finally grasp the idea that they should
wear their seat belt?
Another way that seat belts help keep you safe is when you have to come to an unforeseen stop.
According to Edgar Snyder Associations you are 45% more likely to

Refractive Eye Surgery Essay
Introduction
Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and travels in waves. The electromagnetic
spectrum consists of many other forms of radiation including: radio waves, microwaves, infrared
waves, ultraviolet rays, x rays, and gamma rays (Sandner, 2009). Humans are only capable of
seeing the visible spectrum of light and some even have difficulties with that. However, with
technology taking a turn, many new inventions have come into existence that can help many
parts of the body, including the eyes. Optical devices/processes help us see farther and more
clearly than we can with unaided eyes (Sandner, 2009). One of these optical devices/processes is
laser vision correction. For most people with vision problems, this brand of surgery looks very
appealing to them, which can decrease or even eliminate dependency on glasses and contact
lenses (Sandner, 2009). However, there are also risks that come along with them, and those risks
can be very dangerous.
Background Research
Types of Refractive Eye Surgery
Laser vision correction consists of different types including, but not limited to: LASIK,
LASEK, PRK, and ALK. Each type of surgery is executed for different purposes such as near
sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. According to MedicineNet.com (nd), all types of
refractive eye surgery involve the reshaping of the cornea or clearing the front part of the eye so
that light can travel through onto the retina properly focused.

Anne Tyler Research Paper
Anne Tyler
Anne Tyler was born on October 25th,1941 to the parents of Lloyd and Phyllis Tyler, in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. She was the oldest of four children, all of which were boys besides her. Tyler, herself,
believes what had the most profound influence on her as a writer was growing up in a Quaker
community in the mountains of North Carolina, with three other brothers. This unorthodox upbringing
gave her a distant feeling from the world and allowed her to examine the world from a unique
perspective(Allardice).
Anne has very early memories of writing in her life. The first time that she is able to recall memories
of storytelling was at age 3. When she was unable to sleep at night, she would crawl into bed, get
under the covers, and tell herself stories until she was able to fall asleep. She made her first book at
the age of 7. It was a collection of all of the stories that she had written and pictures she had drawn. It
wasn t until the age of 11 that Anne Tyler s family had moved from Minnesota to North Carolina. She
had never attended a public school, let alone seen a telephone. Her unorthodox upbringing gave her
the ability to view the world at a completely different point of view. She was able to view it from a ...

With the upbringing that she had, she was treated like an outsider throughout her school years. She
believes that her sense of being an outsider gave her some inspiration when it came to writing and
allowed her to have a different view on the world and life. Despite not being exposed to public
schooling before the age of 11, she excelled ahead of her classmates. One of the most influential
people to her was her English teacher, Phyllis Peacock. She was inspired and constantly encouraged
by this woman. She was so important to her, she ended up dedicating her first published novel to Mrs.

The Canadian Arctic
What is the federal government s strategy to support its claims to sovereignty in the high Arctic?
The Canadian Arctic, one of the defining features of our vast landscape. It spans more than 40%
throughout our country and is home to more than 100,000 Canadians (Arctic, 2013). There is a variety
of climate and terrain throughout this region. The Arctic in general has ownership claims by many
countries including Canada, Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland,
Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States (Member States, 2011). All these countries claim that
they own parts of the Arctic but how valid are those claims? What and why does our government want
to claim parts of the Arctic? How valid are Canada s and other nation s claims to the Arctic?
Our claims to the north do have a basis and the law dictates that. According to the United Nations
Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), François Côté and Robert Dufresne a nation has the
right to claim 12 miles off the coast as that country s territory, however ships maintain a right to
innocent passage meaning that all ships can travel freely in those waters as long as there engaged in
peaceful passage (ex. Commercial ships). This means that 12 miles of the Arctic Archipelago belong
to Canada (2008). So legally we do own parts of the Arctic but what about after 12 miles? Well there
is another set of laws in the UNCLOS act. There is a 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s One Day
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich explores the man s struggle to
survive in the trying circumstances of a Soviet Gulag. Though the novel leads the reader through the
horrific conditions in one of the work camps, it does not focus on the lack of hope that the men feel
but it focuses on the perseverance and resilience of the prisoners. Shukhov s character shines through
as a prominent example of the courage of the souls in the work camps. Further, Alyoshka proves to
never give up in the face of extreme conditions and is always around to help his gang. Finally, Tyurin
s undying devotion to leadership provides a refreshing look into the resilience of the prisoners.
Solzhenitsyn expertly constructs intricate layers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the author reveals through Shukhov s actions the determination that mankind
experienced in the gulags. Shukhov takes a job, which could normally be considered a gruelling task,
and turns it into an act of fortitude. As the sole thing he sees is the wall in front of him (97) and he
shouts to not give up yet, boys! (109), he strongly exemplifies the perseverance of the prisoners. The
task that he is given should dishearten him but instead, boosts his morale and thus, his determination.
The character of Shukhov is crafted as a glaring example of the resilience men have in a gulag, and
this is additionally explored through the characterization of Alyoshka.
Solzhenitsyn creates the compelling character of Alyoshka who stays true to himself and to others in
the face of adversity. Staying faithful to his religion gives him the strength he requires in order to
focus on the positive outcomes of the gulags. Contrary to popular opinion, the author uses Alyoshka s
dialogue to exhibit the positivity as he says to [b]e glad [they are] in prison so that they have time to
think about [their] soul[s] (177). He regards his imprisonment as a time to reflect upon his spirit and
the kind of person he is which is a true accomplishment of the human spirit in the calamity of a gulag.
Further, the author uses his actions to display his steadfast nature that causes him to be of tremendous
help to his gang. His want to be helpful is glaringly

Song From The One And Only Grunge Rock Group Nirvana
Come, as you are, as you were, as I want you to be . These famous lyrics can be recognized from a
song from the one and only grunge rock group Nirvana. These lyrics can mean many things but it is
all about a person s interpretation. One interpretation though, that can single out one of the most
important concepts of the grunge era, is to be yourself . In the grunge crowd, in their following, there
is supposed to be no judgment. You can come as you are, as a friend, as an enemy as you want to be.
This concept hit home for a lot of young kids in the 90 s. They felt like they connected to this music,
especially to Kurt Cobain s lyrics. Nirvana s success marked the real beginning of this genre of music,

All these bands contributed to the Grunge Revolution, but it was Nirvana that really took everyone on
a whirlwind. Right before the Grunge Revolution, Rock music had become something of a show with
all the glitz and glamour and puffed hair and make up. At this point people were yearning for real rock
music to make a comeback, people wanted something meaningful and the new 90 s generation wanted
a new voice. This is what Nirvana gave the people, through music, and through Kurt Cobain s
radicalness and I don t care what you think about me, this is who I am attitude, he made it known that
it was ok to be who you are. No matter what you re going through or think, there was no judgment in
his music, but more rebellion and the people wanted to rebel against all that society believed was
perceived as correct, even if it wasn t. It is no secret that Kurt struggled with many things, he
struggled with his fame that sky rocketed overnight, struggled with the emotions of a very harsh
childhood, and then came drugs to numb it all. All these emotions though, flowed through his music,
and people felt as if they knew him personally and a lot of the generation of the 90 s felt they could
relate to his music. What he didn t realize is that he was inadvertently bringing back the realness and
rawness to Rock that everyone was yearning for.

Implementing Universal Healthcare Coverage For All Citizens
The United States is in a period of transition in regards to healthcare. After the passing of the
Affordable Care Act (ACA), more widely known as ObamaCare , in 2010, many dissenting politicians
looked towards Europe to find critiques of the universal systems already in place. The Scandinavian
countries and the United Kingdom were the main targets of allegations that the United States was
attempting to become socialist. However, there is an alternative path to universal healthcare that may
provide a better option for the United States during this time of policy reform. I argue that the United
States should seek to emulate the Netherlands in implementing universal healthcare coverage for all
citizens. Although the United States has attempted to enact healthcare reforms similar to that of the
Netherlands, the current trials in the Supreme Court threaten to undermine these reforms. By
comparing the health statistics of the United States and the Netherlands, I hope to provide a
convincing argument that the reforms enacted by the ACA, which emulate the Dutch reforms, should
improve the healthcare system and overall health of the county.
Background
There are two models of healthcare that fall into the realm of universal healthcare, the Beveridge
Model and the Bismarck Model. In the Beveridge model the government, which is the sole payer of
the system, owns most of the hospitals and clinics (PNHP, 2010). I maintain that the United States is
very unlikely to adopt this model, and

How Traditional Clothing Must Be Addressed, Along With...
When looking to introduce GAP shirts in Turkey for the female market, there are many cultural
considerations that must be taken into account. Traditional clothing must be addressed, along with
textiles. We believe that these products will be successful due to the popularity of American style
within the target market. Also, the styles and materials that the company uses already have some
overlap with the type of clothing that is popular in the cities. Although there are many young
individuals in the middle and upper class that idealize Western styles, shirts must still be adapted to fit

Turkish business practices and procedures are much different than those in U.S. and other countries,
so it is crucial for GAP to be aware of business etiquette before entering this market. For the Turkish,
meeting times to discuss business practices are vital. Since religion is particularly important, members
are expected to be on time, and to have organized appointments and meetings around the five daily
prayer times and holidays. In Turkey, business is a serious matter and is treated very formally. It is
important for GAP representatives to greet Turkish members with a firm handshake and engage in
small talk when entering into conversation. In the Turkish culture, if a person immediately begins
discussing business, rather than getting to know their counterparts, the host may take offense to these
actions and consider them rude. Additionally, individuals generally stand close during conversation
and do not require as much personal space as other cultures. As a result, it is important for GAP
employees, when meeting Turkish colleagues, to never back away from them so that they are not
perceived as unfriendly. Further, when going through business processes, the Turkish culture is known
for taking longer than most countries in negotiating, so this will

Conflict Management
Conflict Management can often be the toughest task for a leader to handle. It involves dealing with
inter personal and intra personal conflict. As a team leader of a technical event called Pulse 09 at my
university, I had to deal with conflicts on a regular basis. Conflicts usually arise either due to lack of
effective communication, different ideologies, lack of resources or due to task interdependence [3]. It
was by far my most life changing experience as it taught me the reason behind conflicts and the way
to resolve them. In this paper, I will be talking about the way I dealt with conflicts and managed them,

Members began to work more for the success of their groups and indirectly contributed to the success
of Pulse 09. Communication was not an issue anymore and meetings were held regularly. There were
times when the groups met more than once during the week to discuss individual progress. Team
meetings saw less of conflicts and more of a productive discussion that was aimed at the success of
the event. Incorporating a reward system, I guess was the key that created a sense of healthy
competition amongst the individual groups and made the members strive towards the goal. As the
event came closer, the more positive I felt about the success of Pulse 09. The last meetings focused on
bringing together the work done by individual groups. The norms remained the same and thus, the
productivity of the team as a whole too didn t seem to lessen. The event was a huge success and was
listed amongst the top 10 technical festivals to attend in the Times of India newspaper. When I think
back now, I feel I could have done a better job in showcasing my leadership skills. Especially after
attending the leadership class, I could have done a lot differently. It was my first time as a leader and

Zen Buddhist Monk Research Paper
The journey of becoming a Zen Buddhist Monk is long and difficult. Those who work their way
through the many trials it takes to reach this stature are held to the highest regard. Living a life of
humility as well as living a life of labor, are two of the steps of becoming a Zen Buddhist Monk. Both
challenge the body and mind, and help them reach their full potential.
The first aspect of becoming a Zen Buddhist Monk is to live a life of humility. The way they teach the
young monks humility is as follows:
While there is no doubt that the chief means of supporting the Zendo life is begging, as was in ancient
days of the Buddha, begging has, besides its economic value, a two fold moral signification: the one is

By seeing the world through the eyes of someone who is consider the lowest of the low by society,
they gain humbleness. In addition, the young monks are also taught humility through the food they
consume. Suzuki (2010) writes:
They ask for such as are rejected by the farmers as unfit for the market. When they have enough
collected they pile them on a hand cart which is pulled by them as far as the foot of the hill where the
monastery is situated. After that, the load will be carried on their backs to the kitchen, and then some
will be made ready for immediate consumption while others will be used for pickles or preserved for
winter supply. (p. 26)
They do not get to eat vegetables that are considered cream of the crop, they eat the ones that the
farmers would not sell to paying customers. This aspect teaches them humility by only allowing them
food that may have rotten spots or imperfections. They eat the way the beggars may eat, only taking
what they can find. This again gives the young monks perspective, helping them realize their self is
not as important as they

Network Diagram, And Critical Path Method
Introduction Work space planning has become one of the most important part of preconstruction
activities. According to Kaming et al. 1998, Oglesby et al. 1989, and Zhang et al. 2007, Unsuitable
work space planning could lead to lots of problem in job site such as rework, loss of productivity,
safety hazards, and issues of poor quality. Accordingly, a project manager should consider the work
space as one of the important factor during a construction. According to Chau et al. 2004, Mallasi
2006, and Wang et al. 2004, although the grant chart, network diagram, and critical path method are
some existing construction planning techniques, they have some limitations to demonstrate the three
dimensional features of activities. In addition, it is difficult even for expert project managers to
manage work space problems and their negative effects during the construction. Based on previous

Heron Of Alexandria Research Paper
Heron of Alexandria, also referred to as hero, was a greek mathematician. Heron was a writer whose
works brought forth knowledge to not only mathematics, but also engineering and mechanics. It is
difficult to determine when Heron was born because record were not as organized and important as
they are today. Some used to believe that Heron was born around 150 BC, while others believed that

Heron s work resembled lecture notes in works that surrounded, mathematics, physics, pneumatics,

Heron himself. Many works by Heron have been recovered over the years, however authenticity, as
well as authorship are questionable. Heron was an extremely common name during his time period.
Heron was sometimes transcribed correctly, while other times it became Hero. Soon the Romans and
Greek took up the nickname of Hero to men named Heron. This makes it very hard for historians to
determine which works were that of mathematician Heron and of others that simply just shared the
name. Historians debate that Heron s most important work was the Metrica . The Metrica is a series of
three books that included formulas and geometric rules that Heron had discovered. These formulas
included how to find the areas and volumes of plane figures, as well as solid figures. Book I included
one of the more famous formulas still used today. This formula was how to find the area of a

Egocentric Perspective Analysis
Many People throughout their lives never try to understand or change how they see the world.
Although this was true for me, I made a change to try and see others viewpoints. It was easily one of
the most difficult introspective change I have ever done, mostly because I only saw things as black
and white. This was probably due to my inexperience of others/ignorance and because I was too
stubborn to believe that anyone other than me was right. But it wasn t these factors or thoughts alone
that determined how I was, or am to be. The other factors were simply me being kind of sheltered and
not knowing about others situations. The main factors that led me to overcome these obstacles of
egocentric thinking was due to my parents, sports, and world ... Show more content on

Sports were always a way for me to escape reality and go into something better, and really have fun.
Although there is always one year where I was getting stressed out more about making varsity. But as
I went and did more and more sports I overcame this stress because of all the friends I have made
through these sports. Now although sports are great, there was a greater lesson I learned because of
sports. Remember me telling you about making friends from sports, well those friends would tell me
about their home life, or difficulties they had. The stuff they told me about their lives was
incomprehensible to me, mainly their father/family problems (arrests or deaths). After hearing these
situations I realized my life was a good one, I had a good family, and a house to live in. But the effect
their life stories had on me was profound, I realized everyone s situations are different, and I realized I
should try to understand others more and not judge them on outside appearances. Plus I made some of
my greatest friends doing these sports, who of which would push me to become a better person and
really understand others and try to become a friend to anyone. But although I try to become a friend to
all, it is easier said than done, mostly because I m human. So now because of sports I have tried to

Although education is a priority when it comes to policy priorities for West, health related policies are

high medical bills because their insurance does not cover certain procedures and allows them to seek
help from the Texas Department of Insurance so that through mediation the bill can be balanced (New
Law Helps Patients). This shows that there is agreement between the policy goals of TMA and West
since their vision includes improving the health of all Texans which the bill, which is now law, helps
with since Texans have the opportunity to be assisted so that medical bills can be reasonably paid for
(Vision, Mission, and Goals). An additional bill that shows the agreement between the policy goals of
TMA and West is the Texas Senate Bill 344, which has to do with the emergency medical personnel
that is allowed to transport patients to emergency centers and strives to keep patients safe when
experiencing emergencies by declaring who is able to transport them to emergency centers (Texas

Analysis Of August Wilsons Fences
August Wilsons Fences takes us on a journey that transforms the 20th century impression of a Negro
Family with Insatiability, Tenderness, and Sacrifice. The famous play is an autobiography of an
American Negro man who loses his dreams for the people he loves. Fences demonstrates us what
sacrifice looks like and how egocentricity still exist today. Fences takes place with a family in
Pittsburgh from 1957 to 1965. The characters are Troy, Bono, Rose, Lyons, Gabriel, Cory, and
Raynell. Fs important because it teaches us Love, respect, responsibility, dignity, and
also about discrimination and how it still endured the black population after slavery had been
abolished nearly a century before the biggest approach from Fences for any director is an all Negro
cast. This show requires a mature cast who can take on the theme of Oppression.
Fences is a grave, dark, depressed production that goes through the life of Troy Maxon a Negro living
in Pittsburgh with his wife and son Cory while at times his friend Bono accompanying him. There are
three important themes of this play and audience should leave the theater feeling Insatiability,
Tenderness, and Sacrifice. As a production Fences takes you on a roller coaster, fences will grab your
gut and keep you on your toes. Troy Maxon is living a life of guilt because of his non existent dream
of playing baseball. Troy has sacrificed for his Flesh and blood . This is deeper than not playing

Digging Seamus Heaney
Eye color, height, even most of your personality is inherited from your parents, and those same traits
from their parents, and so on. Every offspring inherits traits from their parents, but Seamus Heaney
discusses the trait of hard work ethic. A work ethic so strong it is passed down through the generations
of a family. It is a hard work that over time has provided a way of life and means of supporting a
family. Through use of flashbacks and vivid imagery, we get a glimpse at this amazing way of life.
One of the most important pieces of Digging is how the speaker begins about to write something and
how he/she ends that way. As the writer sits down and is about to start writing, they hear a rasping
sound outside the window. As they look down, they see their father under the window, digging. The
speaker s father is described to be straining and working hard. Against the inside knee was levered

on to describe his grandfathers skill with a spade. He says that, My grandfather cut more turf in a day

Sacroiliac Joint Essay
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Balance is the ability to move or remain in a position without losing control or falling. Balance is an
action done without active consideration, but it is vital for locomotion and maintenance of an upright
posture. When balance is impaired it may have detrimental effects. The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is a key
element in an upright posture and locomotion. Subluxations in the SIJ are common in a large percent
of the population, and may be symptomatic or asymptomatic in nature. These subluxations can cause a
number of symptoms including lower back pain, leg length inequality and dysfunction in standing,
walking, lifting objects and changing positions. Chiropractic treatment of the SIJ has been found to

after 8 weeks of chiropractic therapies. (Strunk and Hawk, 2009)
Study 2 was conducted to determine if proprioception would be improved by manual manipulation of
the SIJ or through full body vibration, via the use of a power plate. The results concluded that there
was an improvement in balance in the group, who received the vibration power plate, as well as the
combination group and the group that received only the chiropractic adjustment therapy. (Landman,
2010)
Study 3 was conducted in order to determine the immediate effect of a unilateral sacroiliac adjustment
on gait. This study found that in asymptomatic patients, the sacroiliac adjustment improved gait, and it
was concluded that this treatment should become a treatment regime for patients with gait
abnormalities. (Schooling, 2012)

Sacrifice In Modern And Ancient Societies
Life is full of inexhaustible possibilities, though in order to convert a possibility into a reality,
common day people have to make decisions. Often times, people would coin this as a sacrifice.
Whether it be for religious purposes, non religious sacrifices are made each day around the world.
Religious examples would be when people refuse to seek medical attention when ill because they
believe that God will heal them if they are meant to be cured, some people will even try to mimic
sacrifices the Holy Bible writes about. An example of a non religious sacrifice would be when people
give their lives to save another person s. Despite all of the different sacrifices contrived in both

modern times, human sacrifices are still being made around the world. For instance, an occult group

It is not only this group of people who will make human sacrifices, but also people who follow the

bring them good luck. These types of sacrifices are more common in nations such as India and various
countries throughout Africa and the most practice form of sacrifices are far more nonbelligerent; such

The offerings or help that the village people made to their so called brothers fighting for their Land
was a voluntary act but the bitter realization of the truth and the loss of the intitial romantic fervour
have made them feel that the rebels are nothing more than extortionist. The starting of the story aptly
presents the feelings of the poor villagers: There was an uneasy quiet in the village: the underground
extortionist had come and gone and along with them the hard earned cash the vilagers had earned by
digging the first alignment for a motorable road to their village. (54) The poor villagers were fed up of
the viloence wreaked by the overground as well as the underground army. They succumbed to the
pressure and gave up without any resistence. The following lines reflect the fear and the helplessness
of the villagers: they knew that these fierce looking goons from the forest had come to the village at
night with only one purpose: to rob them in the name of underground government. Resisting them was
of no use: they carried guns and the consequences of any conflict would only mean retaliation. (55) At
one point of the story, when a poor man appealed to the leader of the rebel group to excuse him this

The Concept Of Leadership And Leadership
Thought Item 2 (Option 1)
In today s society the concept of leadership provides a structure for decisions to be made within teams,
organizations, and businesses. The notion that only leaders should be credited for the success or
failure carried out by their teams has been instilled in our minds since we first understood the concept
of hierarchies. The fact that most business schools even posses a required leadership course proves the
significance of this concept within today s society. While it is astounding how essential the idea of
leadership has become, it is important for us to begin looking at leadership under a new light:
leadership does not exist without followers because the followers themselves are the true leaders. It is

The amount of work that the head of a team puts into a project is quite small compared to the total
amount of work applied by everyone associated with the completion of the task. When defining the
significance of roles within organizations, it is important to factor in the composition of the culture as
a whole. Many people credit the creation of an organization s culture to the head of the organization.
While this single leader may define how they envision the culture to be, the members as a whole truly
develop the culture. This insight allows us to shift our focus from the leader to the followers. As a
society, by accepting the fact that followers are our true leaders, we are bound to endure many positive
and negative consequences resulting from the implementation. Followers will likely feel more
empowered to make more decisions because they will be receiving more recognition for their work.
This increase in empowerment will cause followers to be more productive within their roles, which
will lead to a harder working society as a whole as more and more organizational structures follow
suit. Another positive aspect of following this new approach is that we will steer away from the great
amount of negative consequences created by single leaders due to the current composition of
leadership. For businesses, less money will be allocated towards executives because they will no
longer make as much money solely off of their title within

Analysis Of The Hunger Games
In general, Stereotyping affect not only the youth of today but also other individuals. An individual
can be stereotyped based on race, skin color, class warfare or gender. The book, The Hunger Games,
which is now a well known movie, demonstrates how stereotyping can happen to any individual. In
The Hunger Games, Katniss is affected by stereotypes. Being a citizen from District 12, her
appearance and being a female affects the way the Capitol distinguishes her.
District 12 is the poorest district in Panem and everyone expects for the tributes to act as savages and
criminals. During the opening ceremonies, Katniss reminisces about the past tributes clothing. Since
District 12 s principal industry is coal mining, the past tributes have attended the opening ceremony
naked covered in black powder to represent coal dust or skimpy outfits and hats with headlamps (The
Hunger Games 66). District 12 tributes are judged by the Capitol and the stylist judged them based on
where they are from. The past stylists do not put any effort in designing their clothing since District 12
tributes already look worn out and dirty. Typically, everyone in the Capitol judges Katniss and Peeta
because they are from a poorer side of Panem.
By stereotyping, we infer that a person has a whole range of characteristics and abilities that we
assume all members of that group have. It leads to social categorization which is one of the reasons for
prejudice attitudes (Mclead). There are plenty of young

Costco s management style is very humble and giving. They have great management for their
employees. Costco gives their employees great health care coverage and a very competitive salary.
They also offer a time of package deal. Sinegal believed that his management should always have a
door open policy. This is where all the managers and executives keep their doors open so that ideas
could be shared and the business could grow. He believed this also made employees feel more
comfortable at the company.
Sinegal also value mistakes. He believed that in the company you had to take risks and if they didn t
work than you have to learn from that and not make the same mistake five times. Sinegal really takes
the time out to engage with his employees and get to know them. He always makes it a point to ask
employees how they feel and to get feedback to improve the company. They get a lot done by learning
from mistakes, treating their employees well and being very giving through salaries and health

The Unnatural Institution
Slavery has been a correlating characteristic among all major civilizations. The Sumerians made those
they conquered their slaves, and used them for manual labor. The Egyptians made their slaves build
large extravagant tombs for the pharos. Romans also forced those they capture into servitude, but the
Romans also turned slavery into a commodity which allowed it to be capitalized. There where laws
that allowed a father to sell his child in to slavery. The development of all of the great ancient cities

And you who are so busy in making that division of the captives, look with pity upon so much misery
(Yazawa Pg. 19), this statement expresses how one Portuguese seaman felt when loading up the
captured slaves. He lets the reader know that he is feeling compassion for these slaves. Empathizing
and sympathizing is natural, extended exposure to these slave trades would leave the sailors stripped
of these natural feelings. In My Bondage My Freedom, Douglass tells us that Mrs. Auld was teaching
him how to read until her husband found out. Her husband had informed her that this boy was not a
boy but property, and if educated could cause problems. After that discussion she ignored her
nurturing, motherly instincts and would treat and look at Douglass in distain. The last group that is
affected by slavery is those in which do not own slaves and are not a slave themselves. Initially one
would assume that there would be no correlation to the cause and effect of slavery to this particular
group of individuals, but in fact there is. Slavery being cheap labor is not free labor. In slavery there is
a financial cost expended by the slave holder. This cost is induced through food, housing and more
importantly training and tools to complete production. The slaves were trained in handling tools to
complete tasks. Many of the non slave owners did not have

Three years later, in the Mariinsky Theatre, in St. Petersburg The Oprichnik was performed. At the

likely not to reoffend. Most of the recidivists are of African American or Hispanic ethnic background
and between the ages of 17 25 and lack education and or skills needed to meet our labor force. With
the cost of an average inmate at $53,000 in MA versus the $20,000 average cost of participating in
rehab programs aimed at deterring criminally aimed lives. The clash over resources and values is what
struck this growing social change for recidivism. Resources being monetary factor in incarceration
and the value of prison. We incarcerate and place people in the same environment we are trying to
release them from and they have no institutional programs aimed at solving this issue of recidivism.
The value as pointed out by the federal government is the notions that if the government doesn t start
hiring felons or ex cons how do they suppose that others will take on the same practice. No one left
behind is the model of the USA and is the main reason that we cant outcast our felons. President
Obama issued an executive order to combat this social problem demanding that all federal agencies
are prohibited of asking for ones criminal record before the offer of employment. Only when a job is
offered, is the time when a felon is supposed to disclose such information. This will lead us into a new
era of reducing recidivism as a society and lower crime rate in urban areas of the States. It is the role
of the government to lead such initiatives so that other local and state governments take head and

Knights In The Canterbury Tales Essay
During the medieval time period, knights were very important heroic figures. Knights were men who
served their sovereign or lord as a mounted soldier in armor. The Knights follow the code of chivalry,
which was a religious code to behave in an honorable or polite way. Geoffrey Chaucer shows how the
knight uses chivalry in The Canterbury Tales through respect for women, religious act, and honor for
their kingdom and their society. Knights exhibit chivalry through the protection and honor of women.
In the Wife of Bath s Tale, the knight talks to the old women and says, Please choose which may be
the greatest pleasure and greatest honor to you and me also (Chaucer 11). The knight is giving his
honor and assurance to the old lady showing that he loves her no matter what she chooses. Knights
also showed courtesy to women by defending them when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They sometimes show honor through love and sacrifice. In Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, Gawain
says, No men under Heaven, I am sure, are more hardy in will or better in body on the fields where
battles are fought; I myself am the weakest, of course, and in wit the most feeble; my life would be at
least missed, if we let out the truth (Chaucer 134 137). Gawain is showing honor by sacrificing
himself for his king. He would rather die an honorable man than letting his king die. Knights also
show honor by keeping their word. As the Green Knight talks to Gawain, he says, See, Gawain, that
you carry out your promise exactly, and search for me truly, sir, until I am found, as you have sworn in
the hall in the hearing of these knights (Chaucer 448 450). Gawain kept his word to meet the Green
Knight even though he knows the consequences ahead of him. He wants to be courageous knight than
rather to lie on his name. Showing honor is a very important duty to a knight. Having honor means to
have respect for yourself and your

Mickey Mouse Monopoly Essay
1. Describe three specific example of how Disney movie can unintentional create roles certain groups
of people through socialization.
Disney creates gender roles, racial roles, and white supremacy through socialization within their
motion pictures. For example, Walt Disney s Snow White , Fantasia , and even The Little Mermaid all
show females as obscenely beautiful, male dependent and flirtatious creatures who couldn t save
themselves from a Chinese finger trap. Males are the perfectly sculpted rescuers who can be easily
wooed by a woman s body; and these exaggerated roles create a false standard for children and can
lead to severely underdeveloped sociological skills. Moving onto the racial roles; in the movie All
dogs go to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From book to news piece, Disney will exert censorship on everything relating to it s name.
3. Describe a specific example of how Disney can unintentionally set the roles between a man and
woman in an abusive relationship.
In the movie Beauty and the Beast , the role of a man and woman in an abusive relation is practically
spelled out and strait from Disney s female lead jar. Belle is kidnaped by the Beast and forced o live in
the dungeon until her father is ripped away from her. During this time she is completely defenseless to
the Beasts onslaught and often retreats within herself and rarely confronts him. Beast on the other
hand, portraying an abusive male, does everything to a tee. He yells, bangs on doors, throws furniture,
and even threatens starvation when Belle goes against him. Belle, being the kind and gentle female
lead, looks past all his rage and finds he prince inside; highlighting the common problem in abusive
relationships. The abused partner holding onto the hope that their abuser will change, that they will
love them and show them the tenderness that used to be there. Women (could also be men) are
supposed to take the abuse and wait it out, showing nothing but love while the abuser rampages and
eventually, things will be just like the fairy tales.
4. Describe a specific example of how Disney can unintentionally skew a historical event.

Physical Discipline And Child Behavior Problems Essay
Topic/ Rationale/ Hypothesis
The topic in the article Physical Discipline and Child Behavior Problems: A study of Ethnic Group
Differences by Jodi Polaha, Robert E. Larzelere, Steven K. Sharpio and Gregory S. Petit is researching
the relation between parental discipline and how it relates to the child s behavior expression problems
within different ethnic groups. They re addressing how physical discipline in different ethnic groups
can affect children s way of expressing themselves in distinct ways. Previous research shows when a
parent s discipline is abusive then it often results in aggressive behavior from the child (Cicchetti,
Lynch, Shonk, Manly, 1992; Dodge, Bates Pettit, 1990; Strassberg, Dodge, Pettit, 1994). Although, if
the discipline is not abusive then the child is less likely to be aggressive (Gershoff, 2002; Strassberg,
Dodge, Bates, Pettit, 1992). In another study it was found that different ethnic groups react differently
to discipline between African American children and European American children (Baumrind,1972;
Lamborn, Dornbusch, Steinberg,1996). Five years after the study was conducted it had been reported
that European American children got into more fights than the African American children (Gunnoe
Mariner, 1997). Even though the study s have factual results, there have been researchers who
disagree with their findings because of the bias circumstances such as having distinct ethnicities and
parenting methods (Deater Deckard, Dodge,

Mahatma Gandhi And Nelson Mandela
If Mahatma Gandhi never inspired Nelson Mandela to fulfill his vision for human rights, would
Nelson Mandela have inspired Barack Obama to continue that legacy? Mahatma Gandhi practiced
civil disobedience and lobbied for the rights of Indians in South Africa and India. Nelson Mandela
hungered and fought for a South Africa, where all races were equal and unified as nationalists. Barack
Obama sought to build a more tolerant United States through his historic presidency, immigration
policies, and equal rights for all people. Although these individuals faced severe opposition, they
persisted and enacted significant changes in human rights.
Gandhi took a stand for equal human rights and enacted change for Indians in South Africa and India

For instance, In 1960 s Mandela got imprisoned till 1990...Gandhi got imprisoned multiple times in
South Africa and in India as well (Researchpedia Contrast of Mandela and Gandhi Paragraph 6).
Gandhi and Mandela both were imprisoned for their acts of disobedience and did not back down even
while in prison. In summary, Gandhi directly experienced prejudice which set him on a course for
unifying his people and demanding change for India.
Like Gandhi before him, Nelson Mandela demanded a dramatic change in the treatment of his people
and was willing to suffer life long persecution and imprisonment to achieve it. Mandela desired equal
human rights be given to all South Africans, regardless of color, and enacted change against the
apartheid through political activism and becoming a symbol of defiance during his twenty seven year
imprisonment. Mandela s desire for equal rights in South Africa fueled his quest for education and
career in politics. For example, As he secured formal education, Nelson Mandela became more
outspoken for causes of the suppressed, eventually being expelled from school for protesting...only to
return later to complete his degree (Sarah Brooks Paragraph 1). This shows that even while obtaining
his degree, Mandela was actively trying to promote change in South Africa. Mandela and other
congressmen paid a high price for their

Mainstreaming Should be the Parents Decision Essay
Mainstreaming Should be the Parents Decision
Integrating children with handicaps into regular classrooms (also known as mainstreaming) has been a
huge issue in education systems recently. The goal of mainstreaming is providing the most appropriate
and beneficial education to a child in the least restrictive setting and so the question of where the
children with handicaps benefit the most is the question that is the hardest to answer. In the 1960 s
there was no question. No one even thought about taking a child with a handicap out of special
education and placing them within a regular classroom. But now, partly because of parent s requests,
select school districts are mainstreaming. The debate over mainstreaming being good ... Show more

In special education, the teachers focus on teaching the skills that the children will need to survive so
they can increase the chance that these children will be able to live independently. They focus on
dressing and personal hygiene, as well as teaching them basic job skills. The students learn how to
count stock at the grocery store, how to run a cash register, and how to handle money. Bobby s class
actually learned these things along with reading and writing. In my opinion, I think these skills which
teach the children how to take care of themselves is a lot more valuable than most of the things that
Sean was learning.
Sean s mother and other advocates of mainstreaming, on the other hand, believe that children with
mental handicaps should be taught the same skills as any other child. They say that teaching a child
how to count stock and use a cash register is basically telling the children that they won t amount to
anything more than working at Mc Donald s. They say that it ruins their hopes and dreams of
becoming something else. But advocates fail to realize that although Sean made it through the first
grade (barely), the intellectual gap between him and his peers gets larger as they get older. It will be
even harder for Sean to keep up next year in second grade. And then what will happen in junior high?
It will be extremely difficult for Sean to stay in a regular classroom. As it is in first grade, Sean is
taken out of class for help with

Teens And Hispanic Teenage Pregnancy
There are many factors when it comes to which teenagers are most likely to get pregnant. These
factors consist of race, the country they live in, and economic status. Starting with race, whites have a
significantly lower rate of teenage pregnancy than those who are Hispanic or African American. White
and African American teenage pregnancies have both gone down while Hispanic teenage pregnancy
has gone up in the last 15 years (Coley Chase Lansdale, 1998). Even though Hispanic teenagers tend
to be sexually active later in their adolescence, studies have proven that they are less likely to use birth
control; increasing the likelihood of becoming pregnant. Once pregnant they are less likely to abort
than Whites or African Americans leading to a higher rate of Hispanic teenage pregnancies (Coley
Chase Lansdale, 1998). While race plays a big role, what country you live in also contributes to your
chances of being pregnant as a teenager. In fact, at the beginning of this decade, the rate of teenage
births was almost twice as high in the United States as in the country with the next highest rate, Great
Britain; more than 4 times greater than those of Sweden and Spain; 7 times greater than those of
Denmark and the Netherlands; and 15 times greater than that of Japan (Coley Chase Lansdale, 1998,
p. 152). Some researchers argue that because the United States is so diverse the teenage pregnancy
rate is much higher but White teenagers in the U.S. still have higher pregnancy

The Decline And Fall Of The Romanov Dynasty
The Romanov Dynasty reigned over the nation of Russia from the year 1613 until its inevitable fall in
1917. Outlined below includes a few of the significant factors which contributed to decline and the
eventual fall of this 300 year dynasty. These momentous factors range from tsar Nicholas II, the last
tsar of Russia s autocratic rule, his refusal to meet the demands for reform, and above all his
incompetency as a leader.
On the 20th October 1894 Nicholas II ascended the throne as tsar of Russia. He idolised the concept of
continuing to rule Russia under the autocratic system, in the same way his father and predecessor
Alexander III had done so. However, Nicholas lacked the qualities and characters of the autocratic
style of leadership. The

Underage Immigration Issues
In the United States of America, there are many issues surrounding immigration that require
immediate action from the President and Congress. From whether to construct a massive wall to
establishing legal pathways to citizenship, the President and Congress are divided on these two issues.
In the meantime, the number of underage immigrants flowing into the United States continues to
increase at a rapid pace, overwhelming the judicial system (Ramage 473 474).
The Los Angeles Times Editorial Board, Young, Alone and in Court , the Editorial Board addressed
two main points, the primary reasons surrounding the rapid increase of underage immigrants crossing
the border and the United States failure to effectively address the immigration issues

Islam And Western Imperialism In Islam
Although the Islamic world has faced many challenges throughout history, Islam s encounter with
Western imperialism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has had the greatest impact on
contemporary Islam. These encounters with Western powers influenced and shaped the Muslim world
by introducing Islam to modernity. The Islamic world s varied reaction to these challenges of
modernity affects a wide range of issues in Islam today. To understand how the Muslim world reacted
to Western influence, we must understand what they were reacting to. With the fall of the Ottoman
Empire, European political ideas permeated the Middle East. Muslims were forced to respond to ideas
of nationhood, nationalism, democracy, and sovereignty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Modernists claimed these institutions were not foreign to Islam and could coexist within an Islamic
state. Rashid al Rida argued Islam was democratic and representative because Islamic leadership is
determined through consensus of the community. According to Rida, an Islamic state requires Islamic
legal systems, where the uluma are representatives of the people. Other Islamic modernists such as
Muhammad Abduh and Muhammad Iqbal also attempted to balance Western ideologies with the
Islamic faith. According to Abduh, reason and science were complementary to Islam. Iqbal also
believed some Western ideas were compatible with Islam. Iqbal applied reasoning to help understand
Islamic female inheritance laws. One interpretation of these laws is that a woman is worth half a man.
Iqbal argued the share of female inheritance is not based on a woman s value, but rather on social
context specific to a certain period. He claimed these laws applied to a time when women had less
financial responsibility than men. This type of logic and reasoning still exists in contemporary
Pakistani law. Both Abduh and Iqbal believed certain aspects of Western influence could be applied to
Islamic society, as long as those ideas did not contradict Islam. Other movements within Islam have
directly challenged the Islamic modernists ideas on Western influence. Unlike Islamic

  • 3. Gothic Elements In The Power Of Words The Power of Words is one of the most significant works of Edgar Allan Poe, who remains an important figure in American Gothic literature. It is a small piece of work, in which a conversation between two angels is depicted by Poe. The conversation between the two angels, Oinos and Agathos, revolves around the idea of creation of the world by God as a one time act, and the further populating of the world by man s free will. The conversation takes place after the humanity has become extinct and it is futuristic in that sense. The principal theme in the short dialogue between the two angels is that God created the universe in the beginning but it has developed since then in a different way due to man s free will. The quest for knowledge which continues long after humanity is extinct. The Power of Words is a work of American Gothic fiction and symptomatic of a common human fear. The genre of Gothic literature revolves around the focus on dark, mysterious and terrifying events. Although, Poe does not use dark, terrifying or fear evoking imagery in the work, he does manage to respond to a common human fear of extinction or apocalypse. Romantic literature also forms part of the style of this work, which makes it Gothic. It uses intuition, irony and mysticism to create the atmosphere of the story. These are the elements of Romantic literature. Power of Words: Gothic Elements The Power of Words reinforces the theme of death and decay, which is one of the common human fears. In ... • 4. Stamp Act Essay The Stamp Act and the Appropriate Response The American Revolution was not the consequence of any single event or any single legislation. It was a result of some combined factors playing against the wellbeing of the colonists and imposed upon the colonists by the British government. But a series of laws related to taxation which were passed between 1763 and 1775 can be considered as one of the most important factors which instigated the American Revolution. It was in respect of responding to such legislations that debate began on what should be the appropriate nature of such response. For opined that the response to such impractical and overburdening legislations must be vent through proper ways of discussions and deliberations while some others ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the Stamp Act aroused vehement resistance and although most colonists continued to accept the authority of the British Parliament in respect of regulating their trades, they insisted that only their representative assemblies could levy direct, internal taxes, such as the one imposed by the Stamp Act ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). But their plea was actually overlooked by the British government which argued that all British subjects enjoyed virtual representation in Parliament, even if they could not vote for members of Parliament ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). Looking at the failure of the moderates in forcing the British government to reconsider the taxation process, the radicals started hinting on extreme measures for repealing the Stamp Act. It is to be noted that These radical voices warned that the tax was part of a gradual plot to deprive the colonists of their freedoms and to enslave them beneath a tyrannical regime ( STAMP ACT , n.d.). But still there were opponents to such radicals but such opposition failed to resist the tide of extreme resistances that would change the face of American politics ... • 5. The Era Of The American Civil War After the American Civil War, a laissez faire government allowed for a new class of businessmen to rise to power: those who dominated an entire industry, sometimes several markets. They were the hallmark of the so called Gilded Age, which lasted from the end of reconstruction until the early 1900s. These men, known as Robber Barons, shaped the American economy, necessitating new laws to be signed to limit their power . Although there were only four main Barons (John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and J.P. Morgan), they controlled much of the economy with their four respective trades: Oil, steel, railroads, and banking . Although all four were important, Rockefeller and Carnegie stand head and shoulders above the rest, becoming among the richest and most successful people the world has ever seen with the exception of some royalty. During the Civil War, both the Union and Confederacy converted to Total War economies. With all industries, from manufacturing to agriculture to textiles, focused on the war effort, many relatively new industries grew surpassingly large. Railroads in the North grew by around 16,000 miles, an increase of nearly 75%. However, relatively small companies controlled relatively small sections of track privately. This set the stage for Vanderbilt to begin buying up companies until he controlled one of the largest railroad networks ever seen. The latter parts of the Civil War and the early reconstruction saw the rise of a new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Refractive Eye Surgery Essay Introduction Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and travels in waves. The electromagnetic spectrum consists of many other forms of radiation including: radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, ultraviolet rays, x rays, and gamma rays (Sandner, 2009). Humans are only capable of seeing the visible spectrum of light and some even have difficulties with that. However, with technology taking a turn, many new inventions have come into existence that can help many parts of the body, including the eyes. Optical devices/processes help us see farther and more clearly than we can with unaided eyes (Sandner, 2009). One of these optical devices/processes is laser vision correction. For most people with vision problems, this brand of surgery looks very appealing to them, which can decrease or even eliminate dependency on glasses and contact lenses (Sandner, 2009). However, there are also risks that come along with them, and those risks can be very dangerous. Background Research Types of Refractive Eye Surgery Laser vision correction consists of different types including, but not limited to: LASIK, LASEK, PRK, and ALK. Each type of surgery is executed for different purposes such as near sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. She was the oldest of four children, all of which were boys besides her. Tyler, herself, believes what had the most profound influence on her as a writer was growing up in a Quaker community in the mountains of North Carolina, with three other brothers. This unorthodox upbringing gave her a distant feeling from the world and allowed her to examine the world from a unique perspective(Allardice). Anne has very early memories of writing in her life. The first time that she is able to recall memories of storytelling was at age 3. When she was unable to sleep at night, she would crawl into bed, get under the covers, and tell herself stories until she was able to fall asleep. She made her first book at the age of 7. It was a collection of all of the stories that she had written and pictures she had drawn. It wasn t until the age of 11 that Anne Tyler s family had moved from Minnesota to North Carolina. • 11. The Canadian Arctic What is the federal government s strategy to support its claims to sovereignty in the high Arctic? The Canadian Arctic, one of the defining features of our vast landscape. It spans more than 40% throughout our country and is home to more than 100,000 Canadians (Arctic, 2013). There is a variety of climate and terrain throughout this region. The Arctic in general has ownership claims by many countries including Canada, Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States (Member States, 2011). All these countries claim that they own parts of the Arctic but how valid are those claims? What and why does our government want to claim parts of the Arctic? How valid are Canada s and other nation s claims to the Arctic? Our claims to the north do have a basis and the law dictates that. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), François Côté and Robert Dufresne a nation has the right to claim 12 miles off the coast as that country s territory, however ships maintain a right to innocent passage meaning that all ships can travel freely in those waters as long as there engaged in peaceful passage (ex. Commercial ships). This means that 12 miles of the Arctic Archipelago belong to Canada (2008). So legally we do own parts of the Arctic but what about after 12 miles? • 12. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s One Day Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich explores the man s struggle to survive in the trying circumstances of a Soviet Gulag. Though the novel leads the reader through the horrific conditions in one of the work camps, it does not focus on the lack of hope that the men feel but it focuses on the perseverance and resilience of the prisoners. Shukhov s character shines through as a prominent example of the courage of the souls in the work camps. Further, Alyoshka proves to never give up in the face of extreme conditions and is always around to help his gang. Finally, Tyurin s undying devotion to leadership provides a refreshing look into the resilience of the prisoners. Solzhenitsyn expertly constructs intricate layers ... Shukhov takes a job, which could normally be considered a gruelling task, and turns it into an act of fortitude. As the sole thing he sees is the wall in front of him (97) and he shouts to not give up yet, boys! (109), he strongly exemplifies the perseverance of the prisoners. The task that he is given should dishearten him but instead, boosts his morale and thus, his determination. The character of Shukhov is crafted as a glaring example of the resilience men have in a gulag, and this is additionally explored through the characterization of Alyoshka. Solzhenitsyn creates the compelling character of Alyoshka who stays true to himself and to others in the face of adversity. Staying faithful to his religion gives him the strength he requires in order to focus on the positive outcomes of the gulags. Contrary to popular opinion, the author uses Alyoshka s dialogue to exhibit the positivity as he says to [b]e glad [they are] in prison so that they have time to think about [their] soul[s] (177). He regards his imprisonment as a time to reflect upon his spirit and the kind of person he is which is a true accomplishment of the human spirit in the calamity of a gulag. You can come as you are, as a friend, as an enemy as you want to be. This concept hit home for a lot of young kids in the 90 s. Right before the Grunge Revolution, Rock music had become something of a show with all the glitz and glamour and puffed hair and make up. At this point people were yearning for real rock music to make a comeback, people wanted something meaningful and the new 90 s generation wanted a new voice. This is what Nirvana gave the people, through music, and through Kurt Cobain s radicalness and I don t care what you think about me, this is who I am attitude, he made it known that it was ok to be who you are. • 15. Implementing Universal Healthcare Coverage For All Citizens The United States is in a period of transition in regards to healthcare. After the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), more widely known as ObamaCare , in 2010, many dissenting politicians looked towards Europe to find critiques of the universal systems already in place. The Scandinavian countries and the United Kingdom were the main targets of allegations that the United States was attempting to become socialist. However, there is an alternative path to universal healthcare that may provide a better option for the United States during this time of policy reform. I argue that the United States should seek to emulate the Netherlands in implementing universal healthcare coverage for all citizens. Although the United States has attempted to enact healthcare reforms similar to that of the Netherlands, the current trials in the Supreme Court threaten to undermine these reforms. By comparing the health statistics of the United States and the Netherlands, I hope to provide a convincing argument that the reforms enacted by the ACA, which emulate the Dutch reforms, should improve the healthcare system and overall health of the county. Background There are two models of healthcare that fall into the realm of universal healthcare, the Beveridge Model and the Bismarck Model. In the Beveridge model the government, which is the sole payer of the system, owns most of the hospitals and clinics (PNHP, 2010). In Turkey, business is a serious matter and is treated very formally. It is important for GAP representatives to greet Turkish members with a firm handshake and engage in small talk when entering into conversation. In the Turkish culture, if a person immediately begins discussing business, rather than getting to know their counterparts, the host may take offense to these actions and consider them rude. After that, the load will be carried on their backs to the kitchen, and then some will be made ready for immediate consumption while others will be used for pickles or preserved for winter supply. This aspect teaches them humility by only allowing them food that may have rotten spots or imperfections. They eat the way the beggars may eat, only taking what they can find. According to Kaming et al. 1998, Oglesby et al. 1989, and Zhang et al. 2007, Unsuitable work space planning could lead to lots of problem in job site such as rework, loss of productivity, safety hazards, and issues of poor quality. Accordingly, a project manager should consider the work space as one of the important factor during a construction. According to Chau et al. 2004, Mallasi 2006, and Wang et al. 2004, although the grant chart, network diagram, and critical path method are some existing construction planning techniques, they have some limitations to demonstrate the three dimensional features of activities. It is difficult to determine when Heron was born because record were not as organized and important as they are today. Some used to believe that Heron was born around 150 BC, while others believed that he was born in 250 AD. This makes it very hard for historians to determine which works were that of mathematician Heron and of others that simply just shared the name. Although this was true for me, I made a change to try and see others viewpoints. This was probably due to my inexperience of others/ignorance and because I was too stubborn to believe that anyone other than me was right. Now although sports are great, there was a greater lesson I learned because of sports. Remember me telling you about making friends from sports, well those friends would tell me about their home life, or difficulties they had. The stuff they told me about their lives was incomprehensible to me, mainly their father/family problems (arrests or deaths). After hearing these situations I realized my life was a good one, I had a good family, and a house to live in. But the effect their life stories had on me was profound, I realized everyone s situations are different, and I realized I should try to understand others more and not judge them on outside appearances. The notion that only leaders should be credited for the success or failure carried out by their teams has been instilled in our minds since we first understood the concept of hierarchies. The fact that most business schools even posses a required leadership course proves the significance of this concept within today s society. The amount of work that the head of a team puts into a project is quite small compared to the total amount of work applied by everyone associated with the completion of the task. Many people credit the creation of an organization s culture to the head of the organization. While this single leader may define how they envision the culture to be, the members as a whole truly develop the culture. This insight allows us to shift our focus from the leader to the followers. As a society, by accepting the fact that followers are our true leaders, we are bound to endure many positive and negative consequences resulting from the implementation. Followers will likely feel more empowered to make more decisions because they will be receiving more recognition for their work. This increase in empowerment will cause followers to be more productive within their roles, which will lead to a harder working society as a whole as more and more organizational structures follow suit. Another positive aspect of following this new approach is that we will steer away from the great amount of negative consequences created by single leaders due to the current composition of leadership. • 31. Analysis Of The Hunger Games In general, Stereotyping affect not only the youth of today but also other individuals. An individual can be stereotyped based on race, skin color, class warfare or gender. The book, The Hunger Games, which is now a well known movie, demonstrates how stereotyping can happen to any individual. In The Hunger Games, Katniss is affected by stereotypes. Being a citizen from District 12, her appearance and being a female affects the way the Capitol distinguishes her. District 12 is the poorest district in Panem and everyone expects for the tributes to act as savages and criminals. During the opening ceremonies, Katniss reminisces about the past tributes clothing. Since District 12 s principal industry is coal mining, the past tributes have attended the opening ceremony naked covered in black powder to represent coal dust or skimpy outfits and hats with headlamps (The Hunger Games 66). District 12 tributes are judged by the Capitol and the stylist judged them based on where they are from. The past stylists do not put any effort in designing their clothing since District 12 tributes already look worn out and dirty. Typically, everyone in the Capitol judges Katniss and Peeta because they are from a poorer side of Panem. By stereotyping, we infer that a person has a whole range of characteristics and abilities that we assume all members of that group have. It leads to social categorization which is one of the reasons for prejudice attitudes (Mclead). There are plenty of young ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fate works in mysterious ways, because he was very much expected to get a job in the army, but his father wasted all the family s capital on insecure investments and later abandoned him and his family. Aleksandr Siloti, an older cousin of Rachmaninoff, as well as a pianist and composer, saw Rachmaninoff s capabilities and advised him to go Moscow for his piano studies and to learn from the best teacher and pianist that he could think of, Nikolay Zverev. One who partakes in recidivism is referred to as a recidivist. The Massachusetts Department of Correction (MA DOC) defines a recidivist as any criminally sentenced inmate released to the street from MA DOC jurisdiction who is re incarcerated in a Massachusetts state, county or a federal facility for a new criminal sentence. Reform movements pursue changes that will implement the existing value scheme more adequately. Reform because the pro prison reform initiatives aim at allocating funding from prisons and jails to education, rehabilitation, and job skill programs that actually save the society billions of dollars a year and educate felons so they are most likely not to reoffend. Most of the recidivists are of African American or Hispanic ethnic background and between the ages of 17 25 and lack education and or skills needed to meet our labor force. With the cost of an average inmate at $53,000 in MA versus the $20,000 average cost of participating in rehab programs aimed at deterring criminally aimed lives. The clash over resources and values is what struck this growing social change for recidivism. Resources being monetary factor in incarceration and the value of prison. We incarcerate and place people in the same environment we are trying to release them from and they have no institutional programs aimed at solving this issue of recidivism. The value as pointed out by the federal government is the notions that if the government doesn t start hiring felons or ex cons how do they suppose that others will take on the same practice. No one left behind is the model of the USA and is the main reason that we cant outcast our felons. President Obama issued an executive order to combat this social problem demanding that all federal agencies are prohibited of asking for ones criminal record before the offer of employment. Only when a job is offered, is the time when a felon is supposed to disclose such information. This will lead us into a new era of reducing recidivism as a society and lower crime rate in urban areas of the States. • 42. Knights In The Canterbury Tales Essay During the medieval time period, knights were very important heroic figures. Knights were men who served their sovereign or lord as a mounted soldier in armor. The Knights follow the code of chivalry, which was a religious code to behave in an honorable or polite way. Geoffrey Chaucer shows how the knight uses chivalry in The Canterbury Tales through respect for women, religious act, and honor for their kingdom and their society. Knights exhibit chivalry through the protection and honor of women. In the Wife of Bath s Tale, the knight talks to the old women and says, Please choose which may be the greatest pleasure and greatest honor to you and me also (Chaucer 11). The knight is giving his honor and assurance to the old lady showing that he loves her no matter what she chooses. Knights also showed courtesy to women by defending them when ... In Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, Gawain says, No men under Heaven, I am sure, are more hardy in will or better in body on the fields where battles are fought; I myself am the weakest, of course, and in wit the most feeble; my life would be at least missed, if we let out the truth (Chaucer 134 137). Gawain is showing honor by sacrificing himself for his king. He would rather die an honorable man than letting his king die. Knights also show honor by keeping their word. As the Green Knight talks to Gawain, he says, See, Gawain, that you carry out your promise exactly, and search for me truly, sir, until I am found, as you have sworn in the hall in the hearing of these knights (Chaucer 448 450). Gawain kept his word to meet the Green Knight even though he knows the consequences ahead of him. He wants to be courageous knight than rather to lie on his name. Disney creates gender roles, racial roles, and white supremacy through socialization within their motion pictures. For example, Walt Disney s Snow White , Fantasia , and even The Little Mermaid all show females as obscenely beautiful, male dependent and flirtatious creatures who couldn t save themselves from a Chinese finger trap. Describe a specific example of how Disney can unintentionally set the roles between a man and woman in an abusive relationship. In the movie Beauty and the Beast , the role of a man and woman in an abusive relation is practically spelled out and strait from Disney s female lead jar. Belle is kidnaped by the Beast and forced o live in the dungeon until her father is ripped away from her. During this time she is completely defenseless to the Beasts onslaught and often retreats within herself and rarely confronts him. Beast on the other hand, portraying an abusive male, does everything to a tee. He yells, bangs on doors, throws furniture, and even threatens starvation when Belle goes against him. Belle, being the kind and gentle female lead, looks past all his rage and finds he prince inside; highlighting the common problem in abusive relationships. The abused partner holding onto the hope that their abuser will change, that they will love them and show them the tenderness that used to be there. Women (could also be men) are supposed to take the abuse and wait it out, showing nothing but love while the abuser rampages and eventually, things will be just like the fairy tales. 4. • 44. Physical Discipline And Child Behavior Problems Essay Topic/ Rationale/ Hypothesis The topic in the article Physical Discipline and Child Behavior Problems: A study of Ethnic Group Differences by Jodi Polaha, Robert E. Larzelere, Steven K. Sharpio and Gregory S. Petit is researching the relation between parental discipline and how it relates to the child s behavior expression problems within different ethnic groups. They re addressing how physical discipline in different ethnic groups can affect children s way of expressing themselves in distinct ways. Previous research shows when a parent s discipline is abusive then it often results in aggressive behavior from the child (Cicchetti, Lynch, Shonk, Manly, 1992; Dodge, Bates Pettit, 1990; Strassberg, Dodge, Pettit, 1994). Although, if the discipline is not abusive then the child is less likely to be aggressive (Gershoff, 2002; Strassberg, Dodge, Bates, Pettit, 1992). In another study it was found that different ethnic groups react differently to discipline between African American children and European American children (Baumrind,1972; Lamborn, Dornbusch, Steinberg,1996). Five years after the study was conducted it had been reported that European American children got into more fights than the African American children (Gunnoe Mariner, 1997). Even though the study s have factual results, there have been researchers who disagree with their findings because of the bias circumstances such as having distinct ethnicities and parenting methods (Deater Deckard, Dodge, ... Barack Obama sought to build a more tolerant United States through his historic presidency, immigration policies, and equal rights for all people. Like Gandhi before him, Nelson Mandela demanded a dramatic change in the treatment of his people and was willing to suffer life long persecution and imprisonment to achieve it. Mandela desired equal human rights be given to all South Africans, regardless of color, and enacted change against the apartheid through political activism and becoming a symbol of defiance during his twenty seven year imprisonment. • 46. Mainstreaming Should be the Parents Decision Essay Mainstreaming Should be the Parents Decision Integrating children with handicaps into regular classrooms (also known as mainstreaming) has been a huge issue in education systems recently. The goal of mainstreaming is providing the most appropriate and beneficial education to a child in the least restrictive setting and so the question of where the children with handicaps benefit the most is the question that is the hardest to answer. In the 1960 s there was no question. No one even thought about taking a child with a handicap out of special education and placing them within a regular classroom. But now, partly because of parent s requests, select school districts are mainstreaming. The debate over mainstreaming being good ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In special education, the teachers focus on teaching the skills that the children will need to survive so they can increase the chance that these children will be able to live independently. They focus on dressing and personal hygiene, as well as teaching them basic job skills. The students learn how to count stock at the grocery store, how to run a cash register, and how to handle money. Bobby s class actually learned these things along with reading and writing. In my opinion, I think these skills which teach the children how to take care of themselves is a lot more valuable than most of the things that Sean was learning. Sean s mother and other advocates of mainstreaming, on the other hand, believe that children with mental handicaps should be taught the same skills as any other child. They say that teaching a child how to count stock and use a cash register is basically telling the children that they won t amount to anything more than working at Mc Donald s. They say that it ruins their hopes and dreams of becoming something else. But advocates fail to realize that although Sean made it through the first grade (barely), the intellectual gap between him and his peers gets larger as they get older. • 47. Teens And Hispanic Teenage Pregnancy There are many factors when it comes to which teenagers are most likely to get pregnant. These factors consist of race, the country they live in, and economic status. Starting with race, whites have a significantly lower rate of teenage pregnancy than those who are Hispanic or African American. White and African American teenage pregnancies have both gone down while Hispanic teenage pregnancy has gone up in the last 15 years (Coley Chase Lansdale, 1998). Even though Hispanic teenagers tend to be sexually active later in their adolescence, studies have proven that they are less likely to use birth control; increasing the likelihood of becoming pregnant. Once pregnant they are less likely to abort than Whites or African Americans leading to a higher rate of Hispanic teenage pregnancies (Coley Chase Lansdale, 1998). While race plays a big role, what country you live in also contributes to your chances of being pregnant as a teenager. In fact, at the beginning of this decade, the rate of teenage births was almost twice as high in the United States as in the country with the next highest rate, Great Britain; more than 4 times greater than those of Sweden and Spain; 7 times greater than those of Denmark and the Netherlands; and 15 times greater than that of Japan (Coley Chase Lansdale, 1998, p. 152). Some researchers argue that because the United States is so diverse the teenage pregnancy rate is much higher but White teenagers in the U.S. still have higher pregnancy ... Iqbal argued the share of female inheritance is not based on a woman s value, but rather on social context specific to a certain period.
