On Wenlock Edge Poem Analysis
Evaluate the use of melody, rhythm and texture in creating an effective setting of the poems by A.E
Housman in On Wenlock Edge by Vaughan Williams.
On Wenlock Edge is a song cycle of six pieces by Vaughan Williams, set to words from A.E Housman
s collection of poems A Shropshire lad . Having studied music with the likes of Ravel, Williams was
very aware of the impressionist movement (particularly in France) that was in full swing at the
beginning of the 20th century he also spent much of his life travelling around England, collection folk
songs (particularly those of the Tudor period). These influences are distinctly heard in On Wenlock
Edge . Put simply, the poems that make up A Shropshire Lad depict country life, however ... Show

The melodies in these pieces also have been used to attain a sense of immersion in the English
countryside, a place where Williams folk songs would have been found. The recitative style melodic
line at the beginning of Is My Team Ploughing? contributes to this feeling as it was written in D
Dorian mode, a particular scale that is very recognisable from it s use in traditional folk songs. A
famous example of this is Greensleves, a traditional Elizabethan folk song written in Dorian mode,
which, like in Williams song, has a very distinctive feel to it.
In the poem that On Wenlock Edge is set to, Housman presents a landscape that is under torment in a
heavy storm, with strong winds. With resources that are not suited to create such an effect (a string
quartet, piano and voice), Williams relies on other composition methods to set the text truthfully. At
the beginning, the strings and piano play triplets and sextuplets, with the strings using tremolo. The
rhythms are often used to present a constant movement, or fluidity in the music, as is used to represent
the wind, with the tremolo adding a slightly frantic, unpredictability to it. At the time that the pieces
were written, programme music had recently become a popular style of composing, particularly shown
by Bedřich Smetana, whose work Ma Vlast was published in 1872. The piece Vltava from this
describes the journey of the river

The Great Achievements Of The Italian Renaissance
One of the great achievements of the Italian Renaissance is the application perspective, which is the
product of the combination of science and art.The early perspective is invented by the early
Renaissance painter.Perspective enabling artists to scientific accuracy in the reproduction of a two
dimensional surface having a three dimensional space and figures. Art is not a simple art activity but a
scientific activity. An artists use of perspective can create a realistic effect represented (Bouleau 1963).
Leonardo da Vinci, The Last Supper, 1498
In the beginning of the fifteenth century and the sixteenth century, the perspective has become a basic
skill, widely mastered by all painters. As one of three heroes of the Renaissance Leonardo da Vinci
also use the principle of perspective in the creation of a master painting to highlight the theme
(Wölfflin 1963). He worked on Santa Maria Delle Grazie of Milan s monastery dining room painted
the famous fresco The Last Supper will fully reflect his talent in this area. The Last Supper story based
on the Bible, says that in the Passover feast, Jesus and his twelve disciples had supper. During the
dining, Jesus said that , I tell you that there was a man who among you betrayed me. After then , the
traitor Judas to arrest Jesus and put him nailed to the cross. This religious story is common in Western
painting (Conti 1979). Leonardo da Vinci made a careful process in perspective, the shape of the

Essay On The Community In The Giver
When first beginning to read the novel the reader may think this might be a story that the community
seemed to be common place to stay, but in actuality it was a significant novel explaining the real
concept of how you are not always informed with the truth by your community, state or even your
government. The secret information that is kept from the citizens in this community is only in the
hands of the Giver and the new Receiver, that is permitted to lie to anyone to keep the truth away from
them. The citizens in the community do not truly know what happens during a release, except for the
Nurturers that take care of the newborns and infants and the others who are in control of the releases.

August 20, 2015 3.2.13 Practice: Revision Strategies The tempest one of the most difficult
Shakespearean works in my opion to stage, from its stormy, chaotic first scene to its sureality to its
ambiguous resolution, with Prospero facing his silent, treacherous brother and renouncing the power
that has made every action in the story possible. Potent language remains the central force and
mystery of this fathomless play. Prospero speaks almost a third of the lines in The Tempest, and
controls the amount of speech every other character on the island has through manipulation and
magic. Prospero s narrative of how he came to the island, what he did once there, and what he is owed
for this history, goes largely unchallenged in the text. Yet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think that what Prospero is doing here has much to do with the process of the Othering as a method
to make a binary opposition so that he can justify all his brutal and inhuman actions towards Caliban.
Bartolomé de Las Casas 16th century Spanish historian talks about this process of Othering or let s say
considering the Others to be barbarous just because they cannot speak fluently the language of the
Colonizer s, just like what Prospero does towards Caliban, and he argues that it is not just, because the
Others can also consider us as barbarous for not knowing our language: Prospero teaches Caliban to
speak his language, but never gives him access to his books. There is no indication that Miranda ever
sets her hands on these fabled tomes, either: Prospero controls the reality of both Caliban and Miranda
through language and stories, giving them no other means of education or perspective. Caliban, forced
to use the language of his oppressor, resorts to curses, and knows that the way to destroy Prospero is
through his books, telling Stefano and Trinculo to burn them before they kill him. These books have

Role Of Doctors And The Medical System In Mrs Dalloway
Doctors and The Medical System in Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway
Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway is a piece of literature that helped to push forward a culture of writing
that she felt was otherwise stuck. Along with a style that transcended how people thought about telling
a story, was the commentary. The story is riddled with commentary on politics, society, war, class, and
the medical system. Virginia Woolf lets her worldviews bleed into her writing in a way that is
somehow both subtle and also still direct. She lets the characters have their own experiences and
dialogue, which show her views from different perspectives and without just coming out and saying it.
The commentary that this is most evident in is Woolf s commentary on doctors and the medical
system as a whole. Throughout Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf shows the incompetence of doctors and
the medical system through Clarissa and Septimus s interactions with them.
As the novel unfolds you begin to see more of the commentary on the medical system leak into the
story. When the novel begins, Clarissa is leaving to go out for a walk around the town. Clarissa hasn t
been able to get out as much as she has liked because she has struggled with her own illnesses that
have kept her presumably somewhat bed ridden. Although Clarissa s interactions with the doctors in
this story are not necessarily direct, it is made known that she has at least some distain for the time in
her life that she was struggling with her health.

Amontillado Literary Fiction
Is Cask of Amontillado a literary or commercial fiction?
People might have thought of giving a revenge on someone that you really hate, but if the revenge is
to kill that person, what would it be like? There is a book named The Cask of Amontillado which
handles this kind of subject. This book seemed to be a fiction, and is this book a literary or
commercial fiction? While I was reading the text, I thought the plot, characters, and the theme was
more towards the literary fiction. As I read this book, the unique plot and the first person of the
protagonist is the narrator was very interesting.
One of the factors that decide whether the fiction is literary or commercial is the plot of the story. The
distinction of the plot of commercial fiction is that the story is unconventional the ending is not really
clear, rather ambiguous. In this story especially, there is a lot to discuss the ... Show more content on

Initially, the story starts with the quote of the narrator saying, I vowed revenge , and this shows that
this story will be about one character s revenge towards the other one. Within the theme, Poe, the
author has created suspense by foreshadowing that there will be a revenge of the narrator against
Fortunato. Including the theme revenge, another theme could be the betrayal. Fortunato had trusted the
narrator, Montresor, but the narrator finally betrays Fortunato. This kind of theme can be found in the
real world, so it can be considered as a literary fiction because one of the characteristics of literary
fiction is helping us to better understand the real world.
The book Cask of Amontillado is a book with unique content that attracts a lot of readers, and there
are distinguishable characteristics that can be defined as a certain fiction. Within qualities of most of
the literary fiction, I would evaluate this fiction as literary fiction although it contains a few of
commercial fiction

Child Abuse And The Rights Of A Child
Surrounding any contemporary social issue are a set of relationships that negotiate the circumstances.
Social work is embedded inside a range of these relationships including the economic system, service
delivery organisations, the state and the poor. Specifically looking at practice with children suffering
from abuse and neglect, this essay will identify how these relationships shape social work practice
with the poor.
For the purpose of this essay, child abuse will be defined as any acts of harm, ill treatment, neglect or
deprivation of a young person in Aotearoa, New Zealand. These acts are defined only as abuse if they
risk the childs wellbeing and survival. Child abuse is an offence as it violates the governments
responsibility to protect the rights of a child. UNICEF (2003) identifies New Zealand as holding the
third highest number of child maltreatment related deaths amongst rich nations. The rights of a child
have been breached when they are failed to be protected, provided for and are unable to participate in
New Zealand society. While statistics prove this issue is prominent and relevant, child abuse fails to be
approached in a successful manner. The direction to approaching this issue is to identify every
relationship that works to create this problem. Failing to recognise these relationships in child abuse
has significant consequences in New Zealand s future.
Impacts of child abuse not only lead to deaths and physical detriments but also impacts survivors

Matching human resources with the present and the future is one of the main problems faced by an

Good vs. Evil
How can human nature be so good and so evil at the same time? How can someone witness, even

Finn is a classic novel telling the story of Huck s journey down the Mississippi River as he tries to
escape the evils of sivilized society and finds freedom and goodness in himself while floating on a raft
down the river. Huck s relationship with three characters in the book demonstrate his struggle with

is right. Unlike Jim, Tom is educated, but has little sense of what is right and wrong. Huck is more like
Jim than Tom because Huck has an innate sense of what is morally right, much like Jim. Tom, on the
other hand, seems to have no sense that his actions are detrimental to others. At the end of the story,
Jim is imprisoned at the Phelp s farm. Huck wants to execute a simple and effective plan to free Jim,
who is shackled in a hut as a punishment for running away. Tom, however, wants to make this event
into a story they can remember, just like in the books he reads. Tom proposes an elaborate plan to have
a pie send to Jim s hut with a rope ladder inside. Huck goes along with it, despite knowing that the
plan is completely unnecessary and cruel to Jim. This scene shows how Tom challenges Huck s
maturity; Jim ain t got no use for a rope ladder, He has got use for it, (Twain 239). Tom is telling Huck
that they need to find a way to get Jim a rope ladder that he can use to escape. The rope obviously not
necessary because they can simply go and get Jim themselves, but Tom says it is. They end up baking
a pie and putting the rope ladder inside of it, and having the pie delivered to Jim. When the situation
with Jim is over, Huck does not want to go back to the evils of civilization, as he prefers the freedom

How Was Gandhi s Assassination Justified
Is the Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi Justified? Even though, many people disagreed with
Mahatma Gandhi s beliefs and morals that does not justify his assassination. Mahatma Gandhi was the
main leader of the Indian Independence Movement from British rule. He played a big part in
demonstrating peaceful protest as India successfully broke away from the British rule. Gandhi was
assassinated at the age of seventy eight on January 30th, 1948 by Nathuram Godse. The reasons for
why Godse assassinated Gandhi were because of religious differences that they believed. These
reasons are simply just major differences in beliefs and they are not justifiable to assassinate someone
for, especially someone that is a hugely well known peace maker. Overall no matter how severe your
differences of beliefs are with someone, it does not make it reasonable to assassinate them. ... Show

When Gandhi was assassinated the world shook. This was because Gandhi was overall such an
influential person and he is referred to as The Father of the Nation (India). Gandhi had achieved
something in his life that had never been done successfully before in history of mankind: throw out an
empire by non violent civil disobedience. His innovations, ideas, and values were hugely influential
on Martin Luther King Jr and may other peaceful leaders. He wanted to retain all of British ruled India
as an independent country for very good reasons. The main reason was that partition created an enemy
on India s border. In order for him to unify India through his policy he had to promote the idea of
mutual respect among the religions. This caused Hindu extremists to view him as a muslim lover
because this policy made it seem like he was only biased to the muslims. Just because he wanted to
form a compromise and end religious conflict, that does not mean he favored the Muslims because he

Elements Of Roman And Greek Architecture
Roman and Greek architecture are very prominent examples of early historic architectural
advancements. These cultures left imprints on society, founding future forms of art and architecture
through their inspirational elements are artists. These long lasting cultural elements have created
echoes as deep into the future as now, the 21st century. Looking at the Southern Methodist Church in
downtown Austin, we see a variety of Greek and Roman architectural elements. The Southern
Methodist Church has a variety of classical elements that attribute it to past temples and structures
created by the Roman and Greek cultures, appropriated to fit into the religion of the church by the
manipulation of certain parts, such as the frieze. To begin, the first and foremost part of the discussion
is the elements of Greek and Roman architecture that have been incorporated and appropriated for the
building of this church. The first and foremost noticeable feature would be the columns, architrave,
and pediment. The columns are classic ionic columns, starting from the ornate base and leading up to
the capital, all the elements of the classical ionic columns are present, creating an almost life like
appearance to the columns as they grow and support the architrave, a characteristic that can be traced
back to Egyptian columns in temples and funerary buildings. Further, the shaft of the column follows
the Greek style of creation. The divides are evidence that each piece of the columns were

Carl Bernstein And Bob Woodward
Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward were dedicated young reporters at the time Watergate occurred.
There dogged pursuit for the truth kept the story from falling into obscurity. Woodward was a
relatively new reporter at the time, a Yale graduate, and a Navy veteran. Bernstein dropped out of
college and he started working in the newspaper industry at the age of sixteen. By age nineteen, he
was a full time reporter for the Washington Star. Although they were young, and Woodward had not
even been a Post reporter for a year, they were dedicated and tenacious. Without Bernstein and
Woodward s efforts, the entire truth may have never been revealed. Their actions during the scandal
and their subsequent book has helped Americans see the reality of the Nixon administration. At the
beginning of the scandal Bernstein and Woodward were 28 and 29, respectively. Bernstein and
Woodward were not partners. Bernstein looked as if he belonged to the Counterculture, while
Woodward had Establishment credentials. 1 They appeared to be complete opposites and did not get
along very well, but over the course of their investigations, they realized they could work well
together. They became involved in the Watergate investigation when they received a call. The call
came from Alfred E. Lewis, a veteran of the police force, who moonlighted as an informant for the
Post. Soon after the burglars were arrested, it became clear that it was more than just a simple break

Autism Spectrum Disorder And Autism
Autism Spectrum Disorder is defined as a neurodevelopmental condition that is classified by a triad of
impairments. These impairments are in communication, socialization, and repetitive patterns of
behavior (Wolf, 2004). Autism affects about 1% of the current population (Shishido, Branko, Norio,
2013). This disorder seems like a common diagnosis in the current day in age but the disorder was
only discovered around sixty years ago. The two founding researchers that discovered the disorder are
Kanner and Asperger. Since then there has been a significant amount of research on the disorder and
they have narrowed down the criteria associated with Autism. Since the discovery of Autism Spectrum
Disorder, there has been many debates on what causes this condition. When it was, a recent discovery
scientist thought it could have been caused by many factors including psychological conditions and
poor parenting. Now research has shifted in another direction (Wolf, 2004). In recent years, there has
been a debate if childhood vaccinations or genetic mutations cause the disorder. This debate has led
many parents to stop vaccinating their children in case it does cause the disorder. In 2010 (de los
Reyes) the immunization rates fell to 80%. These parents decisions greatly effects the nation s public
health so it has fueled even more research to find the cause. A very common vaccine that has been said
to cause the disorder is the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine or the MMR vaccine. This

There are many people who think that mystical experience cannot support a belief that one has united
with God or experienced ultimate reality. However for other people, mysticism is an experience that
provides reason to belief in God or ultimate reality. Thorner explains that mystics claim that the
perceptual referent in religions experiences is a unity within the world. On the other hand, mystical
experience is only one form of mysticism. Williams James presented the paradoxical position of the
emerging science of psychology. James did not make use of religious concepts such as the soul in
developing psychology as a natural science. In The Principles of Psychology, James understood that
there were no need for the concept of a soul or any transcendent dimension to human consciousness.
In The Varieties of Religious Experience he noted that the facts of mystical experience required a
wider dimension of human consciousness. Evolutionary theory has been a continuous influence on
psychology since the beginning. Many had proposed mysticism as a form of consciousness that is
evolving. Consciousness has evolved from the non reflective consciousness that characterizes animals
to the reflective consciousness that characterizes humans. Bucke is indentified with the theory that

Prison Reform
To combat these issues various steps need to be taken three different areas of reform. The first being
preparing prisoners for reentry into the community. Starting namely with keeping the prisoners with
longer sentences updated on relevant technology and social, political, and legal changes so they know
how to operate and function in a modern society upon release. Another essential part of preparing
offenders for reentry would be providing housing upon release for all those who are unable to afford
housing or do not have housing that does not violate probation requirements. Secondly, training
offenders valuable life skills while imprisoned should heighten their chance for success upon release.

offender shall receive housing if need be, a place of employment, and a probation officer who can

release as well as a mandated class in the prisons. It would have ideally be implemented by the
government but can be done on a system to system basis. It can be run by both hired and volunteered
help to decrease costs. This program should also be geared toward those who are at a mid to high risk
of reoffending. To be sure it is effective it should be between 100 to 150 hours of work for those at a
moderate risk of reoffending and at least 200 hours for those at a high risk (Latessa 31).
This program can be evaluated by in a couple of different areas. The most important area of evaluation
being the ability to compare the recidivism rates from previous years to the years following the

offenders achieve after being released from prison; the job retention they hold. Another form of

the subject most cheated on because many students on campus have a difficulty in the subject. I also

American Foreign Policy And The Education System
When Noam Chomsky speaks about education, he referred to it as an imposed ignorance . Thoughts
on Intellectuals and The School is written by world renowned linguist, Noam Chomsky as a response
to the issues of Western education and the impact it has in the lives of the intellectuals and scholars.
Chomsky is noting that intellectuals often cared more about attaining power than exposing the lies and
truth. With that, he provided examples from the failure of the American Foreign Policy and decision
making system to which the intellectual community fails to contribute its opinions to social issues, and
instead, disdained from it. Furthermore, Chomsky suggested that schools should provide more

We believe that if with knowledge, comes power, and with power comes a great responsibility,
Chomsky was right that what mattered most was not the American intellectuals offering their
allegiance to the country, but rather exercising their power to challenge the effectiveness of the
individuals who represent their nation.
Chomsky criticized how the American education system is portraying the country as a dominant
power and treating the rest of the world as an American preserve. As such, there is the the justification
of unethical behaviors that can affect American student s perspectives of their superiority toward other
country. Chomsky regarded this circumstances as a national disgrace toward American education

By way of example, history educators have glossed over several facts that certain historical events left
a bad mark in history. Such as, the Napoleonic War where thousands of Europeans are killed. It is that
debates regarding Napoleon s legitimacy and moral ethical dilemma are rarely discussed, and history
are rather seen as a win or lose situation between two nations at war. This view is very narrow and

Narrative Essay On Fourth Grade Treasurer
Two years of instant friendship were put to the test when Calissa and I ran against each other for
fourth grade treasurer. Before election day, the tension between us was slightly growing through our
awkward conversations about the campaign process. On the outside, I tried to be optimistic and
assured her that I would be excited for her if she won, but on the inside, I knew I would feel envious.
She was a lot more popular and outgoing than I was. In the morning, everyone was busy gossiping and
showing their excitement for the results. While I waited to get into class, I thought about my chances
of winning. Right then, everyone else who was running for treasurer faded away and the competition
was just between Calissa and I. My parents did not believe that Vietnamese girls had the capability to

None of my friends mentioned anything about the election and I did not want to pester them about the
vote because I knew that they had chosen between the two of us. I also did not want to know who
voted for me and who did not. After I ate lunch, I ran into one of my classmates, Heather, in the
bathroom and she told me, I hope you win because Calissa is mean. Her remark was a chain that kept
me from uttering a word in response. Immediately, I heard a faint sniffle and my friend, Kathy, entered
the bathroom and told me my fear; Calissa was in also in here. I was worried that she thought I agreed
with Heather since I did not defend her. After she ran out of the bathroom, our teacher, Mrs. Rene saw
her crying and beckoned me to come to her. Frantically, I explained the situation to her and she
understood what we felt, or most importantly, what I felt. It s hard to go against your own friend for
something you both want, she said sympathetically. We hugged it out, but Calissa still had a somber

Essay on Health Risks in the Media
Health Risks in the Media
There is no cure for the common cold. But when we find that cure, another ailment in society will be
healed. Unfortunately, this is not the way the media depicts health risk. Instead, they use disease and
danger to profit. The more frightening and uncontrollable a danger, the higher the price tag is. The
media resorts to exaggeration and misrepresentation in order to make money. The reasoning for these
unscrupulous tactics is best explained in the book, Unreliable Sources. It explains that the media has
two contradictory goals: a) to provide a public service, and b) to make money. Contemporary
American media has chosen to focus on the latter. In the pursuit of this goal, they have become less ...

In truth, the problem is not nearly so large. Some estimate that 1 in 500,000 or more surgeries will
have this phenomenon; many times the chances are even less than those so graphically described. It
occurs in .00002% of all surgeries and .0000027% of the general populous. This hardly constitutes a
major problem compared to other problems like surgical errors, misdiagnosis, poor treatment
procedures and other dangers in a doctor s office. This ailment was focused on because it is new,
shocking and scares readers into reading next week to find out more. This is becoming the norm for
other uncommon diseases, such as Ebola which is becoming clichéd.
The danger of Ebola has become a metaphor for terror because despite the efforts of scientists there is
no cure for it. The symptoms are shocking, grotesque and violent, and there is no miracle medicine or
vaccination to stop it. It is so terrifying that it has been the model for many works of popular fiction
such as The Andromeda Strain, Hot Zone and Outbreak a cross between Steven King and Walter
Cronkite. That is where the media picks it up. When it was realized that people were afraid of Ebola, it
became a favorite article subject. Reporters described the extreme danger of a strand of virus like
Ebola appearing in the United States and killing millions. They fail to mention, however, that several
agencies are already in place to prevent this. Ebola has been around for almost a hundred years

Psychological Needs Theory
This article talks about the psychological needs of human beings where their satisfaction can have a
positive or a negative effect in the life of an individual. For instance, the satisfaction of psychological
needs will make a person have self determination, motivation, social development and well being. On
the contrary, the dissatisfaction of psychological needs will make a person aggressive, be ill be and
will lack self defense and a way of solving issues soundly. The theory of self determination developed
by American Psychologists supported that satisfaction of psychological needs will make an individual
to be determined in life and have the strength to face situations positively. First, psychological need
satisfaction and frustration can lead to either dark and bright side of a person s character. Thus,
psychological development is what brings out the best or beast in a person and defines their character,
thinking capacities, their attitudes and depression levels. Various benefits accompany the satisfaction
of these psychological needs which include fostering human growth through intrinsic motivation and
integration and attainment of good health. The dissatisfaction of psychological needs will make a
person to lack self control, have rigid behavioral patterns and oppositional defiance. Although such
negative vices may develop in a person, there are ways of coping with psychological need satisfaction.
Self determination theory (SDT) supported that some

The United States Government Spending
The United States Government Spending It is clear that the relationship between the spending policy
and the tax policy has dramatically changed over the past hundred years. It has been noticed that the
Democratic Party proposals show that increases in spending or cut taxes have been paid with new
revenue sources or by offsetting spending reductions (Hungerford 1). For the Republican Party on the
other side, tax and spending decisions tend to show more favoritism for isolation from one other and
with little regard to any impact on deficits and federal debts (Hungerford 1). Republicans pay for tax
cuts and spending increases with more of financed sources undergone during Republican
administrations (Hungerford 1). With these Democratic and Republican ways of dealing with spending
increases and tax cuts, many problems arise because, while the federal government is projected to run
deficits further into the future, the U.S economy is more focused on generating considerable amounts
of income growth far into the future. This is just another way of saying that the real fiscal challenge in
all of this is the political problem that arises from raising revenues that are sufficient to meet the
population s spending needs (Hungerford 2). The authority of Congress to raise revenue to pay the
debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States that comes from

The Financial Crisis Of 2007 And 2009
Prior to the crisis in 1907, individual banks such as JP Morgan and the reserve banks of New York
were considered full service financial institutions. In the year 1913, the Federal Reserve System was
created by congress to help stabilize the financial market by acting as the lender of last resort to the
banking institutions (federalreserve.gov). Nonetheless the great depression still hit the economy
between 1929 and 1933 which led to the stock market crash and market share value decrease by 80%
(history.com). By the 1980s, the economy had stabilized again and there was increase in computer
analysis, electronic information transfer, increased importance of global markets and deregulation of
financial institutions.
The financial crisis of 2007 and 2009 was the worst since the great depression. It was not a single
event but a series of crises whose seeds had been planted in yet another recession of 2001 and the era
of the internet bubble years earlier (Bodie, Kane, Marcus, 2011). One of the reasons for the crisis was
the rise in subprime lending. Subprime loans were offered to individuals who did not qualify for prime
rate loans and carried a higher rate of interest than prime loans (Gilbert, 2011). Another reason behind
the subprime mortgage crisis is argued to have been due to the lack of ethics and poor policies such as
the Goldman rule which encouraged pursuit of profitable opportunities irrespective of the effects on
others (Watkins, 2011).
The crises impacted the

MRIs are used to allows researchers to see structures in the brain (2007) A great advantage to using
MRI is it is non invasive. The less researchers harm their patients the more ethical it is which can help
with the validity. The downside is however, researchers can only use MRIs to look at activation in the
brain making its use limited. A study that can show how MRI scans care used to investigate the
relationships between biological factors and behavior is Maguire et al. (2000). The aim of this study
was to determine if well experienced taxi drivers in London would have differing hippocampus
structures compared to London bus drivers. MRI scans were used to scan the structure of their
hippocampus, and measured the amount of gray matter in their brain. Maguire noticed there was a
larger amount of gray matter found in taxi drivers. Maguire found the data could suggest that the
increase amount of gray matter in the hippocampus of taxi drivers is due to the active and repetitive
use of the spatial memory skills required to remember roads; the neurons are stronger in areas of the
brain which are used most. Maguire because of the MRI technology was able to observe the structures
of the subject s brains and find a correlation between environment and neuroplasticity which has been
known to affects behavior in terms of memory. Maguire effectively used MRI scans to investigate the
structure of the hippocampus, he could not have done this using other technologies such as an EEG or
a PET scan. With this study Maguire was able to see the biological factor of brains areas and the

Criminal Profiling, A Powerful Tool Essay
Criminal profiling can be a rather useful tool for criminal investigators of all kinds. Many departments
use profiling to catch terrorists, gangs, cyber crimes, counter intelligence, white collar crimes, and
most of all serial killers. How criminal profiling works is by looking at the behavior of the criminal to
gain insight into his or her personality. A doctor does the same thing when looking at symptoms to
diagnose a certain disease. Being able to understand this person s personality leads you one step closer
to catching him or her. The history of profiling starts as early as the 1800s. Criminal profiling is what
it is today because of the contributions of those investigators of that time. The first documented case

There were no clear signs of forced entry which means the suspect had been in the house before and
knew his way around. The time that the kidnappers said they would call came and went, which should
have been a big clue that something was wrong. The house was then completely searched and in the
basement the body of JonBenet was found. JonBenet s body was found with her hands over her head
with a cord, along with a cord around her neck. She was covered up with a white blanket with duct
tape on her mouth. The fact that she was covered means that the suspect felt some kind of remorse for
what they did. It could have been someone that JonBenet knew. Now the autopsy confirmed how she
was murdered. It was confirmed that she died by strangulation along with blunt force trauma to the
head and some trauma to the vaginal tissue. Drawing from the information on the autopsy we may
conclude that someone brought JonBenet down to the basement to sexually assault her and took it too
far. The suspect may have gotten angry with her which is why there was bruising on her face and
neck. Once she was dead the suspect may have freaked out and decided to make a ransom note and
hide the body to cover up the crime. Now there was a lot of other evidence that was gathered at the
scene of the crime along with examples of both parents handwriting to compare to the ransom note.

The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara Summary
Toni Cade Bambara has quite a unique style of writing. She does not have the typical proper style as
other authors do, which shows drastically in her short story The Lesson. Bambara was born in New
York and grew up in Harlem which explains her high influence of writing about African American
lifestyles. In The Lesson she writes about a poverty stricken African family who meet a rich woman
that moves into their neighborhood to teach the children. Bambara s unique voice comes to life in this
short story when she uses informal words and phrases, has a relaxed and informal tone, and
incorporates irony into her story. Using all of these components make for an outstanding story and
makes it more realistic and somewhat more relatable. Unlike many authors, Bambara gets into the ...

Sexism In Walt Disney s Movie The Little Mermaid
Growing up watching Disney movies you never notice how sexist they really are. I always watched
The Little Mermaid, but watching it now is very different. When you are younger you just watch
things because you like them, you do not necessarily understand them. As you get older you realize
what you were really being taught. Walt Disney s movie The Little Mermaid displays a lot of sexism
and displays how society should see women and how women should act.
In Walt Disney s movie The Little Mermaid Ariel is constantly under power of a man. Her dad, King
Triton is the number one man who has power over her. When she gets married to Prince Eric he then
also has power over her and always will. He is a Prince and she is just a woman who happens to be his
wife with very little power. Throughout the movie Ariel is not allowed to make her own decisions. Her
dad is always telling her not to do this and not to do that. Also her two male friends Flounder, a fish
and Sebastian, a crab also tell her not to do things and always follow her around so she is never alone
under her father s orders. When she finally gets to make her own decision to give Ursula her voice to
be a human they try and portray it as she made the wrong decision because she did it by herself and a
man did not choose it for her.
In the song Poor Unfortunate Souls that Ursula sings it is telling girls to be quite for men and do what
they need, basically telling girls that they are objects. Girls are always shown in movies as someone
with no power. They are either cleaning or cooking in the house or they are a damsel in distress
needing to be saved by a man. Girls are displayed as objects and there is a certain way they are
supposed to look so that they appeal to society s needs. Ariel fits that description. She is very small
and thin, she is pretty, she has nice eyes, and she has very vibrant colors on her. She has red hair,
blueish brown eyes a purple top and a green tail. Ariel acts as though she needs a man to save her or
needs a man to be happy.

Importance Of Gladiators
Historically, gladiator battles were a very complicated issue. This is because most people think that the
gladiator battles were completely fair. However they weren t. This topic is misguided because no one
thinks about how the gladiators were chosen, the equipment they used, and finally how the audience
influenced whether they died or not.
Gladiator battles were unfair because the gladiators didn t have a choice. When gladiator battles
started, the people that were the gladiators were either slaves or prisoners of a war. And because they
were slaves or prisoners, they didn t have a choice if they wanted to be a gladiator or not. While you

According to Hope Babowice, the author of dailyherald.com, Around five thousand gladiators died
each year during the Roman empire which lasted till the 5th century. If you do the math, that is two
million five hundred thousand people that died in gladiator battles. The last thing that was unfair about
the equipment is that when an emperor fought against a gladiator, he would weaken him. He did this
by either taking away almost all of his armor, or he would give the gladiator a wooden sword while
the emperor was able to use a steel sword. This shows me that the equipment that the gladiators used
was unfair.
Finally, the last thing that was unfair was how the audience influenced if the gladiators lived or died.
The reason why I say this is because sometimes the audience could choose if the gladiators would die.
The way they would do this is by giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down. What a thumbs up means is
that it was a excellent fight, and they spare the losing gladiator s life. But that usually wasn t the case.
They most likely would give a thumbs down, and that meant that the winning gladiator would strike
his opponent with a sword. They did this because the audience found it entertaining. Also, according
to history.com they said that the audience was unfair to the gladiators, because they yell things like
burn him, or flog him, which also influenced whether the gladiators would die or not. Even if the

The Effect Of Physical Activity On Young Age Essay
The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of physical activity on teenage in late life.
Specifically, this paper focuses on how physical activity at various ages over the life course is
associated with cognitive impairment in later life . Many studies show that physical activity can
improve cognition impairment in old age, however, these results are not enough to prove the theory
that physical activity over the life course and its association with cognitive performance and
impairment in old age . In this study of participants who were physically active at teenage had a lower
possibility of cognitive impairment in old age. The paper focuses on the main factors of cognitive
impairment in old age. More specifically focusing on the question does physical activity in early life

movement of skeletal muscles, resulting in energy expenditure exceeding the resting state and it is
different from physical fitness (Blondell, Hammersley Mather, Veerman, 2014). Several things are
thought that early life physical activity is positively connect cognitive performance in old age

The Importance of Setting in Jack Londons To Build a...
A good writer s depiction of setting positions the reader right into the story. In To Build a Fire by Jack
London, the setting plays a significant role throughout the entire short story. London uses certain
techniques to establish the atmosphere of the story. By introducing his readers to the setting, prepares
them for a tone that is depressed and frightening. Isolated by the hostile environment of the Yukon in
sub freeing temperatures, a man falls victim to the unrelenting and unforgiving power of nature,
London shows us how the main character of the story is completely unaware of his surroundings. The
only world the man is truly accustomed to is his own. Never being exposed to such a harsh climate
draws one to conclude that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But, we realize almost immediately, the man has only a superficial knowledge of the Arctic. As he
stands on a bank of the Yukon about to plunge into an almost absolute wilderness, he has little or no
understanding either of his immense isolation relative to his surroundings or of the extreme danger
posed by the cold snap. But all of this, London comments at the beginning of the third paragraph, The
mysterious, far reaching hair line trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the
strangeness and weirdness of it all, made no impression on the man. Thus, the man also knows, in
addition to the fact the sun will reappear, that it is fifty degrees below zero, but he does not know the
meaning of this fact, it portends death for anyone who makes himself vulnerable to its ability to kill.
Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero. That there should be
anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head. During his journey, the man
gets his feet wet as he falls through the ice into the water of a hot spring. Because of the severity of the
cold, the man s life depends upon his ability to adapt to his surroundings. After one, half successful
fire starting endeavor, and several other pitiful attempts, the hopelessness of the man s lone struggle

Humanitarian Aid In Rwanda Research Paper
The proliferation of the crises throughout the world has led to a keen grow in the scale of
humanitarian aid obligatory to meet the vital needs of the people affected by them for shelter, food,
medical care and water. The humanitarian organizations can either addresses these requirements
straight or support the local services occupied in the same work. In most cases, both procedures that

Rwanda is enmeshed in another cycle of repression, with an elite that represents a definite minority
involved in legal and extra legal policies that impoverish the majority of the people in the country.
Unfortunately for all concerned, while the foreign aid is essential for the evolution of Rwanda and to
raise it out of poverty, this same foreign aid is continuing the crisis and the government laws by and
for the elite Tutsis who came out of Uganda in 1994 and their little group of allies. Despite, aid that
flows to that government have the perverse effect of enabling this group to keep control even when
that power begins from purposefully restricting the growth of the huge majority of people in the
country. The civil war took place in Rwanda in the 1990 and 1994 and subsequently spread to the
DRC and caused an enormous loss of human capital through countless victims. The war also
destroyed the infrastructure and equipment, public and private buildings. Additionally, rich sources
were diverted toward war activities. Additionally, productive resources were diverted toward war
activities. Hakizimana, E., Endless, B. (2009, April 15). Rwanda Today: when foreign aid harms more

I Am A College Student
I m a college student on a typical college student s budget, and I moved into my apartment about a
year ago. Let me tell you this, I just now decorated my room. Yes, I spent an entire year staring at
stark white walls, with nothing but last years calendar and my celebrity crush of the moment hanging
o the wall beside my bed. There s nothing inviting about an undecorated room, in fact it s sort of
depressing, and I wouldn t recommend it to anyone. No matter what your budget, decorating is
important and can be done. Here s how I gave my room a personal touch for less than $100. Like most
people the first thing I thought of to decorate my walls with were pictures. Little did I know how
expensive pictures could be. I first looked for framed pictures at discount retailers like Target, figuring
I could get a good deal. Wrong. Even their smaller pictures cost about $30, and while that isn t really
expensive, it was just a tad bit more than I wanted to spend on one item. I did come across a rather
small rectangular picture for $10 in the sale bin at Rite Aid, and a matching pillar candle for the same
price at Kmart, but those items ended up in my bathroom so they don t count towards the total for my
room. The point is, however, that we can t discriminate against those really cheap shops. To find good
pictures for a really low price I recommend going to unexpected places, such as Rite Aid. Believe it or
not, you might just find one or two items you like. If all else fails,

The International Telephone And Telegraph Company
1. Introduction Big companies such as Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) is characteristic of the
capitalist economic system which have a role as non state actors. However, it is shown to have an
important role and can determine the direction of the economy of a country that these companies
invested. Multinational enterprises have developed since the early 19th century. In the 20th century,
with the growth of information technology and transport, causing the expansion of international trade

Moreover, these companies are also ready to move their production bases to another country or to
layoffs and downsizing their companies if their business are unsuccessful. It causes tremendous
equality between the companies and the countries that have been investing. Despite the advantages of
an investment may entail technology transfer, production and employment in the country, it has the
effect of trade liberalization on that companies can easily withdraw the investment. Including,
technology transfer in production to those subsidiaries have been inherited by these companies are not
absolutely perfectly. It could be that the relationship between the parent company and subsidiaries is
the parent company control and plays a major role over the subsidiaries and based on the pursuit of
profit as much as possible. This essay will provide the examples of two big companies which focus on
multinational enterprises in different continents which have high turnover but on the other hand, there
are problems that arise from the operation of these companies, as well as the impact on third parties
that may lead to reduce the credibility of companies. The samples have to be taken into consideration
and analysis in perspective of foreign investors, civil society actors and the reaction of government
actors as well. 2. What is Multinational Enterprises (MNEs)? Organisation for Economic Co operation

New York City Description
We stood hunched over and shivering in a small lobby, our clothes dripping on the tiled floor. The tiny
room could barely fit the both of us. It led into a restaurant, which promised shelter and hot food; it
beckoned us. I wrung out my sleeves and shook my hands to dry them. My mom offered her phone to
me, and I fervently started typing. We were huddled together in a tiny vestibule, completely soaked,
and helplessly lost in New York City. The day had started off marvelously an early start and meet up
with the bus that would be taking us. The ride up was peaceful, ironically contrasting the day ahead.
We barreled down the highway until the traffic slowed to a halt. Car horns blared as they fought for
entry to the city. I gazed out the window ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After hours of shopping, eating, and sightseeing we started searching for our final destination the
Rockefeller Tree. I d never seen it, and didn t plan on missing one of the great staples of the New York
holiday tradition. We had not a single inkling of where it was, or how to get there. We found ourselves
at a crosswalk surrounded by congregations of other people. The light suddenly turned white, and
people flooded the street jostling us every which way. Out of sheer desperation, we turned left hoping
to find some help or indicators of where the tree was. We were met with the same row of shops we d
just left we d gone in a circle. The rain had pummeled us all day, and we were chilled to the bone. The
rain kicked up again the torrential downpours discombobulated us even more. I looked to my mom,
and she returned my glance with a fleeting look of panic. We looked for the street we came from and
doubled back to where we started. My mom pulled out her phone in hopes of searching for directions,
but couldn t unlock it due to the untimely rain. Mother Nature kept berating us as we searched for
shelter. And now we re caught up huddling together in a tiny room, our clothes sopping wet, our spirits
disheartened, and our bodies aching. Eventually, we constructed a route to the Rockefeller Tree that
consisted of three miles of complex intersections and meandering roads. In desperation, I looked to
my mom for guidance.

  • 2. On Wenlock Edge Poem Analysis Evaluate the use of melody, rhythm and texture in creating an effective setting of the poems by A.E Housman in On Wenlock Edge by Vaughan Williams. On Wenlock Edge is a song cycle of six pieces by Vaughan Williams, set to words from A.E Housman s collection of poems A Shropshire lad . Having studied music with the likes of Ravel, Williams was very aware of the impressionist movement (particularly in France) that was in full swing at the beginning of the 20th century he also spent much of his life travelling around England, collection folk songs (particularly those of the Tudor period). These influences are distinctly heard in On Wenlock Edge . Put simply, the poems that make up A Shropshire Lad depict country life, however ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The melodies in these pieces also have been used to attain a sense of immersion in the English countryside, a place where Williams folk songs would have been found. The recitative style melodic line at the beginning of Is My Team Ploughing? contributes to this feeling as it was written in D Dorian mode, a particular scale that is very recognisable from it s use in traditional folk songs. A famous example of this is Greensleves, a traditional Elizabethan folk song written in Dorian mode, which, like in Williams song, has a very distinctive feel to it. In the poem that On Wenlock Edge is set to, Housman presents a landscape that is under torment in a heavy storm, with strong winds. With resources that are not suited to create such an effect (a string quartet, piano and voice), Williams relies on other composition methods to set the text truthfully. At the beginning, the strings and piano play triplets and sextuplets, with the strings using tremolo. The rhythms are often used to present a constant movement, or fluidity in the music, as is used to represent the wind, with the tremolo adding a slightly frantic, unpredictability to it. At the time that the pieces were written, programme music had recently become a popular style of composing, particularly shown by Bedřich Smetana, whose work Ma Vlast was published in 1872. The piece Vltava from this describes the journey of the river ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Art is not a simple art activity but a scientific activity. An artists use of perspective can create a realistic effect represented (Bouleau 1963). Leonardo da Vinci, The Last Supper, 1498 In the beginning of the fifteenth century and the sixteenth century, the perspective has become a basic skill, widely mastered by all painters. As one of three heroes of the Renaissance Leonardo da Vinci also use the principle of perspective in the creation of a master painting to highlight the theme (Wölfflin 1963). He worked on Santa Maria Delle Grazie of Milan s monastery dining room painted the famous fresco The Last Supper will fully reflect his talent in this area. Dantes August 20, 2015 3.2.13 Practice: Revision Strategies The tempest one of the most difficult Shakespearean works in my opion to stage, from its stormy, chaotic first scene to its sureality to its ambiguous resolution, with Prospero facing his silent, treacherous brother and renouncing the power that has made every action in the story possible. Potent language remains the central force and mystery of this fathomless play. Prospero speaks almost a third of the lines in The Tempest, and controls the amount of speech every other character on the island has through manipulation and magic. Prospero s narrative of how he came to the island, what he did once there, and what he is owed for this history, goes largely unchallenged in the text. Yet ... I think that what Prospero is doing here has much to do with the process of the Othering as a method to make a binary opposition so that he can justify all his brutal and inhuman actions towards Caliban. Bartolomé de Las Casas 16th century Spanish historian talks about this process of Othering or let s say considering the Others to be barbarous just because they cannot speak fluently the language of the Colonizer s, just like what Prospero does towards Caliban, and he argues that it is not just, because the Others can also consider us as barbarous for not knowing our language: Prospero teaches Caliban to speak his language, but never gives him access to his books. There is no indication that Miranda ever sets her hands on these fabled tomes, either: Prospero controls the reality of both Caliban and Miranda through language and stories, giving them no other means of education or perspective. • 6. Role Of Doctors And The Medical System In Mrs Dalloway Doctors and The Medical System in Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway is a piece of literature that helped to push forward a culture of writing that she felt was otherwise stuck. Along with a style that transcended how people thought about telling a story, was the commentary. The story is riddled with commentary on politics, society, war, class, and the medical system. Virginia Woolf lets her worldviews bleed into her writing in a way that is somehow both subtle and also still direct. She lets the characters have their own experiences and dialogue, which show her views from different perspectives and without just coming out and saying it. The commentary that this is most evident in is Woolf s commentary on doctors and the medical system as a whole. Throughout Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf shows the incompetence of doctors and the medical system through Clarissa and Septimus s interactions with them. As the novel unfolds you begin to see more of the commentary on the medical system leak into the story. When the novel begins, Clarissa is leaving to go out for a walk around the town. Clarissa hasn t been able to get out as much as she has liked because she has struggled with her own illnesses that have kept her presumably somewhat bed ridden. Although Clarissa s interactions with the doctors in this story are not necessarily direct, it is made known that she has at least some distain for the time in her life that she was struggling with her health. ... People might have thought of giving a revenge on someone that you really hate, but if the revenge is to kill that person, what would it be like? There is a book named The Cask of Amontillado which handles this kind of subject. This book seemed to be a fiction, and is this book a literary or commercial fiction? While I was reading the text, I thought the plot, characters, and the theme was more towards the literary fiction. As I read this book, the unique plot and the first person of the protagonist is the narrator was very interesting. One of the factors that decide whether the fiction is literary or commercial is the plot of the story. The distinction of the plot of commercial fiction is that the story is unconventional the ending is not really clear, rather ambiguous. In this story especially, there is a lot to discuss the ... • 8. Child Abuse And The Rights Of A Child Surrounding any contemporary social issue are a set of relationships that negotiate the circumstances. Social work is embedded inside a range of these relationships including the economic system, service delivery organisations, the state and the poor. Specifically looking at practice with children suffering from abuse and neglect, this essay will identify how these relationships shape social work practice with the poor. For the purpose of this essay, child abuse will be defined as any acts of harm, ill treatment, neglect or deprivation of a young person in Aotearoa, New Zealand. These acts are defined only as abuse if they risk the childs wellbeing and survival. Child abuse is an offence as it violates the governments responsibility to protect the rights of a child. UNICEF (2003) identifies New Zealand as holding the third highest number of child maltreatment related deaths amongst rich nations. The rights of a child have been breached when they are failed to be protected, provided for and are unable to participate in New Zealand society. While statistics prove this issue is prominent and relevant, child abuse fails to be approached in a successful manner. The direction to approaching this issue is to identify every relationship that works to create this problem. Failing to recognise these relationships in child abuse has significant consequences in New Zealand s future. Impacts of child abuse not only lead to deaths and physical detriments but also impacts survivors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Southern Methodist Church has a variety of classical elements that attribute it to past temples and structures created by the Roman and Greek cultures, appropriated to fit into the religion of the church by the manipulation of certain parts, such as the frieze. To begin, the first and foremost part of the discussion is the elements of Greek and Roman architecture that have been incorporated and appropriated for the building of this church. The first and foremost noticeable feature would be the columns, architrave, and pediment. The columns are classic ionic columns, starting from the ornate base and leading up to the capital, all the elements of the classical ionic columns are present, creating an almost life like appearance to the columns as they grow and support the architrave, a characteristic that can be traced back to Egyptian columns in temples and funerary buildings. This disorder seems like a common diagnosis in the current day in age but the disorder was only discovered around sixty years ago. The two founding researchers that discovered the disorder are Kanner and Asperger. Since then there has been a significant amount of research on the disorder and they have narrowed down the criteria associated with Autism. Since the discovery of Autism Spectrum Disorder, there has been many debates on what causes this condition. When it was, a recent discovery scientist thought it could have been caused by many factors including psychological conditions and poor parenting. Now research has shifted in another direction (Wolf, 2004). In recent years, there has been a debate if childhood vaccinations or genetic mutations cause the disorder. This debate has led many parents to stop vaccinating their children in case it does cause the disorder. In 2010 (de los Reyes) the immunization rates fell to 80%. These parents decisions greatly effects the nation s public health so it has fueled even more research to find the cause. Thoughts on Intellectuals and The School is written by world renowned linguist, Noam Chomsky as a response to the issues of Western education and the impact it has in the lives of the intellectuals and scholars. Chomsky is noting that intellectuals often cared more about attaining power than exposing the lies and truth. Unfortunately, this is not the way the media depicts health risk. Instead, they use disease and danger to profit. The more frightening and uncontrollable a danger, the higher the price tag is. The media resorts to exaggeration and misrepresentation in order to make money. The reasoning for these unscrupulous tactics is best explained in the book, Unreliable Sources. For instance, the satisfaction of psychological needs will make a person have self determination, motivation, social development and well being. On the contrary, the dissatisfaction of psychological needs will make a person aggressive, be ill be and will lack self defense and a way of solving issues soundly. The theory of self determination developed by American Psychologists supported that satisfaction of psychological needs will make an individual to be determined in life and have the strength to face situations positively. First, psychological need satisfaction and frustration can lead to either dark and bright side of a person s character. Thus, psychological development is what brings out the best or beast in a person and defines their character, thinking capacities, their attitudes and depression levels. Various benefits accompany the satisfaction of these psychological needs which include fostering human growth through intrinsic motivation and integration and attainment of good health. • 27. The United States Government Spending The United States Government Spending It is clear that the relationship between the spending policy and the tax policy has dramatically changed over the past hundred years. It has been noticed that the Democratic Party proposals show that increases in spending or cut taxes have been paid with new revenue sources or by offsetting spending reductions (Hungerford 1). For the Republican Party on the other side, tax and spending decisions tend to show more favoritism for isolation from one other and with little regard to any impact on deficits and federal debts (Hungerford 1). Republicans pay for tax cuts and spending increases with more of financed sources undergone during Republican administrations (Hungerford 1). With these Democratic and Republican ways of dealing with spending increases and tax cuts, many problems arise because, while the federal government is projected to run deficits further into the future, the U.S economy is more focused on generating considerable amounts of income growth far into the future. This is just another way of saying that the real fiscal challenge in all of this is the political problem that arises from raising revenues that are sufficient to meet the population s spending needs (Hungerford 2). In the year 1913, the Federal Reserve System was created by congress to help stabilize the financial market by acting as the lender of last resort to the banking institutions (federalreserve.gov). Nonetheless the great depression still hit the economy between 1929 and 1933 which led to the stock market crash and market share value decrease by 80% (history.com). By the 1980s, the economy had stabilized again and there was increase in computer analysis, electronic information transfer, increased importance of global markets and deregulation of financial institutions. The financial crisis of 2007 and 2009 was the worst since the great depression. It was not a single event but a series of crises whose seeds had been planted in yet another recession of 2001 and the era of the internet bubble years earlier (Bodie, Kane, Marcus, 2011). One of the reasons for the crisis was the rise in subprime lending. Subprime loans were offered to individuals who did not qualify for prime rate loans and carried a higher rate of interest than prime loans (Gilbert, 2011). Another reason behind the subprime mortgage crisis is argued to have been due to the lack of ethics and poor policies such as the Goldman rule which encouraged pursuit of profitable opportunities irrespective of the effects on others (Watkins, 2011). A study that can show how MRI scans care used to investigate the relationships between biological factors and behavior is Maguire et al. (2000). The aim of this study was to determine if well experienced taxi drivers in London would have differing hippocampus structures compared to London bus drivers. MRI scans were used to scan the structure of their hippocampus, and measured the amount of gray matter in their brain. Maguire noticed there was a larger amount of gray matter found in taxi drivers. Maguire found the data could suggest that the increase amount of gray matter in the hippocampus of taxi drivers is due to the active and repetitive use of the spatial memory skills required to remember roads; the neurons are stronger in areas of the brain which are used most. Maguire because of the MRI technology was able to observe the structures of the subject s brains and find a correlation between environment and neuroplasticity which has been known to affects behavior in terms of memory. I always watched The Little Mermaid, but watching it now is very different. When you are younger you just watch things because you like them, you do not necessarily understand them. As you get older you realize what you were really being taught. Walt Disney s movie The Little Mermaid displays a lot of sexism and displays how society should see women and how women should act. In Walt Disney s movie The Little Mermaid Ariel is constantly under power of a man. Her dad, King Triton is the number one man who has power over her. When she gets married to Prince Eric he then also has power over her and always will. He is a Prince and she is just a woman who happens to be his wife with very little power. Throughout the movie Ariel is not allowed to make her own decisions. Her dad is always telling her not to do this and not to do that. Also her two male friends Flounder, a fish and Sebastian, a crab also tell her not to do things and always follow her around so she is never alone under her father s orders. When she finally gets to make her own decision to give Ursula her voice to be a human they try and portray it as she made the wrong decision because she did it by herself and a man did not choose it for her. In the song Poor Unfortunate Souls that Ursula sings it is telling girls to be quite for men and do what they need, basically telling girls that they are objects. Girls are always shown in movies as someone with no power. They are either cleaning or cooking in the house or they are a damsel in distress needing to be saved by a man. Girls are displayed as objects and there is a certain way they are supposed to look so that they appeal to society s needs. Ariel fits that description. She is very small and thin, she is pretty, she has nice eyes, and she has very vibrant colors on her. She has red hair, blueish brown eyes a purple top and a green tail. Ariel acts as though she needs a man to save her or needs a man to be happy. Ariel is showing girls of all ages that you win guys over with your looks and not your voice or intelligence. • 42. The Importance of Setting in Jack Londons To Build a... A good writer s depiction of setting positions the reader right into the story. In To Build a Fire by Jack London, the setting plays a significant role throughout the entire short story. London uses certain techniques to establish the atmosphere of the story. By introducing his readers to the setting, prepares them for a tone that is depressed and frightening. Isolated by the hostile environment of the Yukon in sub freeing temperatures, a man falls victim to the unrelenting and unforgiving power of nature, London shows us how the main character of the story is completely unaware of his surroundings. The only world the man is truly accustomed to is his own. Never being exposed to such a harsh climate draws one to conclude that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But, we realize almost immediately, the man has only a superficial knowledge of the Arctic. As he stands on a bank of the Yukon about to plunge into an almost absolute wilderness, he has little or no understanding either of his immense isolation relative to his surroundings or of the extreme danger posed by the cold snap. But all of this, London comments at the beginning of the third paragraph, The mysterious, far reaching hair line trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all, made no impression on the man. Thus, the man also knows, in addition to the fact the sun will reappear, that it is fifty degrees below zero, but he does not know the meaning of this fact, it portends death for anyone who makes himself vulnerable to its ability to kill. Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero. That there should be anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head. During his journey, the man gets his feet wet as he falls through the ice into the water of a hot spring. Because of the severity of the cold, the man s life depends upon his ability to adapt to his surroundings. After one, half successful fire starting endeavor, and several other pitiful attempts, the hopelessness of the man s lone struggle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rwanda is enmeshed in another cycle of repression, with an elite that represents a definite minority involved in legal and extra legal policies that impoverish the majority of the people in the country. Unfortunately for all concerned, while the foreign aid is essential for the evolution of Rwanda and to raise it out of poverty, this same foreign aid is continuing the crisis and the government laws by and for the elite Tutsis who came out of Uganda in 1994 and their little group of allies. Despite, aid that flows to that government have the perverse effect of enabling this group to keep control even when that power begins from purposefully restricting the growth of the huge majority of people in the country. The civil war took place in Rwanda in the 1990 and 1994 and subsequently spread to the DRC and caused an enormous loss of human capital through countless victims. • 44. I Am A College Student I m a college student on a typical college student s budget, and I moved into my apartment about a year ago. Let me tell you this, I just now decorated my room. Yes, I spent an entire year staring at stark white walls, with nothing but last years calendar and my celebrity crush of the moment hanging o the wall beside my bed. There s nothing inviting about an undecorated room, in fact it s sort of depressing, and I wouldn t recommend it to anyone. No matter what your budget, decorating is important and can be done. Here s how I gave my room a personal touch for less than $100. Like most people the first thing I thought of to decorate my walls with were pictures. Little did I know how expensive pictures could be. I first looked for framed pictures at discount retailers like Target, figuring I could get a good deal. Wrong. Even their smaller pictures cost about $30, and while that isn t really expensive, it was just a tad bit more than I wanted to spend on one item. I did come across a rather small rectangular picture for $10 in the sale bin at Rite Aid, and a matching pillar candle for the same price at Kmart, but those items ended up in my bathroom so they don t count towards the total for my room. The point is, however, that we can t discriminate against those really cheap shops. To find good pictures for a really low price I recommend going to unexpected places, such as Rite Aid. Believe it or not, you might just find one or two items you like. If all else fails, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. New York City Description We stood hunched over and shivering in a small lobby, our clothes dripping on the tiled floor. The tiny room could barely fit the both of us. It led into a restaurant, which promised shelter and hot food; it beckoned us. I wrung out my sleeves and shook my hands to dry them. My mom offered her phone to me, and I fervently started typing. We were huddled together in a tiny vestibule, completely soaked, and helplessly lost in New York City. The day had started off marvelously an early start and meet up with the bus that would be taking us. The ride up was peaceful, ironically contrasting the day ahead. We barreled down the highway until the traffic slowed to a halt. Car horns blared as they fought for entry to the city. I gazed out the window ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After hours of shopping, eating, and sightseeing we started searching for our final destination the Rockefeller Tree. I d never seen it, and didn t plan on missing one of the great staples of the New York holiday tradition. We had not a single inkling of where it was, or how to get there. We found ourselves at a crosswalk surrounded by congregations of other people. The light suddenly turned white, and people flooded the street jostling us every which way. Out of sheer desperation, we turned left hoping to find some help or indicators of where the tree was. We were met with the same row of shops we d just left we d gone in a circle. The rain had pummeled us all day, and we were chilled to the bone. The rain kicked up again the torrential downpours discombobulated us even more. I looked to my mom, and she returned my glance with a fleeting look of panic. We looked for the street we came from and doubled back to where we started. My mom pulled out her phone in hopes of searching for directions, but couldn t unlock it due to the untimely rain. Mother Nature kept berating us as we searched for shelter. And now we re caught up huddling together in a tiny room, our clothes sopping wet, our spirits disheartened, and our bodies aching.
