2. What is conformity?
• Conformity is a change in behaviour or
attitudes as a result of real or imagined group
pressure or norms. Kelman (1958) suggested
that there are 3 kinds of conformity:
• 1. Compliance – Publically changing behaviour to fit in with
the group while privately disagreeing.
• 2. Identification – Conforming to expectations of a social role,
similar to compliance.
3. Internalisation – Publically changing behaviour to fit in with
the group and also agreeing with them privately.
