3. Chinese Cultural Diffusion
Cultural diffusion: The spread of cultural ideas from their place of
origin to other regions, groups or nations.
Why is it that Culture diffuses from one country to another?
Migration: People migrating from one place to another - why might people do this
Tourism: Tourists travelling to countries
Commodities: Products from these countries being sold in other places.
Technology/ Media - e.g. films
In recent years people say that culture of the USA has spread through the world and we are
all becoming “Americanised” - how much do you agree with that? How might this happen?
The dominance of one culture over others is called cultural imperialism.

political influence of China - Will its
culture diffuse and overtake the major

5. Migration
There have been many waves of migration of Chinese which
have helped diffuse Chinese culture. Some examples include:
● movement of Chinese workers to California to work on the
railroad - many stayed and formed the Chinatowns of San
Francisco
● Movements after the communist revolution in 1949 - many
moved to South East Asia, but also all over the world.
The name for a group of people who are spread througout the
world is a DIASPORA. The role of the diaspora in cultural
diffusion is very important.
Now many Chinese migrate as students, or to work in other parts
of the world. As China’s economy grows the numbers are
increasing. Task next page.
