COMPUTER AIDED QUALITY
METROLOGY & QUALITY ASSURANCE
QUALITY
We can define quality as:
 A degree of excellence
 Conformance to requirement
 Totality of characteristics which act to satisfy need
 Fitness for Use and Purpose
 Freedom from defects
 Delighting customers
QUALITY CONTROL
Quality control is a system of
 Inspection
 Analysis
 Action applied
OBJECTIVES OF QUALITY CONTROL
Objectives of Quality control are:
 Establish desired quality standards
 Discover flow of variation in raw material and manufacturing process
 Evaluate methods and process of functioning
 Suggest improvement
 Determine the extent of quality deviation
 Analyse in detail the causes of such deviations
 Undertake steps which are helpful in achieving the desired quality
WHAT IS COMPUTER AIDED QUALITY
CONTROL?
The use of computers for quality control the product is called as the
Computer aided quality control or CAQC.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN QC & CAQC
Quality Control Computer Aided Quality Control
1. Major parts of quality control are
inspection and testing
2. Operations are traditionally
performed manually with the help
of gages, measuring devices and
testing apparatus.
1. Major parts of CAQC are computer
aided inspection (CAI) and
computer aided testing (CAT)
2. Operations are digitally performed
on computers
BLOCK DIAGRAM OF COMPUTER AIDED QUALITY CONTROL (CAQC)
COMPUTER AIDED INSPECTION (CAI)
It is use of computer based software tools that assist quality engineers,
machinists and inspectors in manufacturing product components
Its primary purpose is to create a faster production process and
components with more precise dimensions and material consistency.
COMPUTER AIDED INSPECTION (CAI)
Computer aided inspection (CAI) is a software tool that makes it
Possible to inspect physical models using computer aided design
(CAD) programs.
COMPUTER AIDED TESTING (CAT)
The applications of computer to control either analogue or digital test
Techniques in order to evaluate the quality of components and products.
Computer aided testing is used to check that the component parts,
Subassemblies, and full systems are within specified tolerance and
Also perform up to specifications.
COMPUTER AIDED TESTING (CAT)
Performance to specification may require that unit or system operates
Under stressful conditions that would not be encountered in normal use.
The parameters (test criteria) for computer-aided testing are often
derived from computer aided design and computer aided
manufacturing systems.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER AIDED
QUALITY CONTROL
1. 100% Testing and Inspection
 In traditional manual process the testing and inspection is done by
sampling process out of hundred and thousands of products and parts
manufactured by the part company since it is not feasible to check
each and every product.
 With CAI and CAT hundred percent inspection and testing can be
accomplished without much difficulty.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER AIDED
QUALITY CONTROL
2. Inspection integrated with manufacturing process:
 No separate department is necessarily made for inspection.
 In CAQC the inspection process is integrated with the
manufacturing process and it is located along thee production line.
 This helps in reducing the overall time required for manufacturing
the process.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER AIDED
QUALITY CONTROL
3. Use of Non-Contact Sensor:
 In CAQC non-contact sensors are used for the inspection purpose
and they inspect the product without coming in contact with the product.
 Sensors can check the product very quickly in the fraction of seconds.
 In future, the robots would be used to carry-out the inspection
process thus further automating and speeding the process.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER AIDED
QUALITY CONTROL
4. Computerized Feedback control system:
 The data collected by non-contact sensor is sent as the feedback to
the computerized control system.
 These systems would carry out the analysis of the data including
statistical trend analysis.
 This helps in identifying the problem going on in the manufacturing
line and find appropriate solution to it.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER AIDED
QUALITY CONTROL
5. Computer Aided Quality Control (CAQC) and
CAD/CAM Integration:
 All the applications of CAQC can be integrated with CAM/CAD
to make the whole process of designing and manufacturing controlled
by the computers converted into fully automated process.
