Porphyrias Lover And My Last Duchess Comparison Essay
Comparison between Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess
Browning had a place with the Victorian Age, an age where adore coincided with disarray,
religion, and distress. Taking care of business, Browning is a writer of affection. His works
delineate the different shades of feeling, regardless of whether it is the smooth stream of perfect
otherworldly love in The Last Ride Together or the complexities of brain and nature of affection in
Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess.
To draw an examination between Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess, it is vital to comprehend
the consistent theme between these two ballads. Both are sensational monologs in which the beau
portrays his story of adoration and distress. While in Porphyrias Lover we ... Show more content on

My Last Duchess is about an individual from the respectability conversing with a minister
concerning his keep going spouse, who later on in the sonnet is uncovered to have been killed by
the individual talking, who is going to wed his second wife. Porphyria s Lover gives an
understanding into the brain of an uncommonly possessive significant other, who slaughters his
partner keeping in mind the end goal to catch that impeccable snapshot of empathy (Afsari 12).
Porphyria s Lover utilizes a rotating rhyme plot amid the greater part of the ballad aside from
toward the end. The entire ballad is just a single stanza long, and each line in the stanza includes
eight syllables.
In My Last Duchess, the Duke takes a gander at the artistic creation of his last duchess and trails
off to the past. He talks about the admirers of the Duchess excellence and the coy responses of the
Duchess of them. At that point, he talks about how he closes this by executing the Duchess.
In My Last Duchess, the speaker is passed on as being controlling, pompous, malevolent, and
whimsical. The Duke hints at desire and over assurance towards his first spouse. Then again, the
storyteller in Porphyria s Lover is depicted as who has put some distance between realities,
somebody obviously crazy. There a couple of clues that this character might be desolate and pulled
back. After Porphyria goes into the room he is in, the

Secondary Traumatic Stress Research Paper
Introduction
We Define secondary traumatic stress as the natural, consequent behaviors and emotions resulting
from knowledge about a traumatizing event experienced by... other[s]. It is stress resulting from
helping or wanting to help a traumatized or suffering person (Stamm, 1999, p. 10) This comes
from Dr. Charles Figley, director of the Traumatology Institute, chair in the Disaster Mental Health
and Associate Dean at Tulane University. While secondary traumatic stress (STS) can affect people
in a variety of different careers and positions. It is most apparent in the lives of medical
professionals due to the emotional and physical trauma they witness people going through daily.
Three major symptoms of secondary traumatic stress include lack of sleep, decreased job
satisfaction, and compassion fatigue (American Counseling Association., n.d.) all of which are can
be life threatening if an MD is treating a patient while experiencing these symptoms. This problem
is prevalent in the lives of many medical professionals across the nation but unfortunately, there is
currently not enough being done to combat this serious issue.

lives of medical professionals because they constantly need to be putting 100% effort into their

Summary Of Betty Friedan s The Feminine Mystique
The 1960s were a time of change for many Americans, whether it be dealing with the women s
liberation movement, civil rights, or the anti war movement. During this period, many issues that
had laid beneath the surface were brought out, it was a time for change. The second wave of
feminism was established in the sixties, beginning when many women addressed the topics that
angered them in the world, specifically pertaining to their own rights. The sixties brought up many
feelings, feelings that had been buried or held back for some time, Betty Friedanhas been one of
those many people to address her feelings and put it out in the world. Friedan wrote a book named
The Feminine Mystique, which has become an international bestseller and has sold over one
million copies since its release in 1963(citation, from opening of book). Her book focused on the
societal expectations that kept women in the home for many years. Friedan captured the anger and
frustration many women felt, and offered ways for women to recapture their lives back. Betty
Friedan s book, The Feminine Mystique, launched a conversation about women s roles in society,
which started the second wave of feminismwhere society began to see women as self reliant, and
capable to do the tasks men had been doing as long as time.
Friedan s article The Problem that Has No Name grabbed the attention of any women who would
listen, she called attention to the standards that were supposed to make women feel content and

The Modern Age Of Islam
The Islamic world has tried to become strong again through both secularism and religion, with
neither answer showing a complete, absolute advantage over the other. This is shown through Atta
Turk completely removing Islam out of the newly formed Turkish society, the Baath Party s secular
ideology while still committing massacre, and Hezbollah using a radicalized form of religionto gain
political strength.
The beginning of the modern age of Islam can be marked with Napoleon s conquest of Egypt and
the subsequent conquest by Britain. This defeat indicated to the leaders of the Islamic world that
not only were they defeated by a Western power, but also by an inferior Western power. Thus,
leaders of the Islamic world, such as Muhammad Ali and al Afghani said that to create a successful
society, we must emulate the West to become strong. This ideology held largely throughout the
Islamic world until the creation of Israel. When Israel fought and destroyed Arab nations in the Six
Days War, secular governments were no longer as widely accepted, leading to the creation of
Islamic states and the further progression of Islamic Fundamentalism. Islamic Fundamentalism uses
radicalized Islam, which can usually be traced directly back to Wahhabism, to try and gain power
and political influence over the region through terror. This clearly corrupted thought clashes with
the secular, although also in many cases corrupted, powers of the world. These opposing viewpoints
show that there is no

Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange Linguistic Differences in the Film and Novel A
Clockwork Orange, written by Anthony Burgess, is experienced differently as a novel than it is
as the movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. The heart of the difference between the two forms is
expressed by Bakhtin: The potential for [ double voiced discourse between the author and
narrator] is one of the most fundamental privileges of novelistic prose, a privilege available
neither to dramatic nor to purely poetic genres (Bakhtin, 320).1 An entire dimension of the novel s
story is lost in the movie when Alex s role is reduced from narrator to commentator. The ability of
Burgess to speak indirectly to the audience through Alex is removed, and the... Show more content

Burgess is revealing Alex s disdain towards God and organized religion. Two different things are
happening when Alex says, you may, O my brothers, have forgotten what these mestos were
like, things changing so skorry these days and everybody very quick to forget, newspapers not
being read much neither (Burgess 1). On one level, Alex says these words to comment on the
way society is going. He presupposes his audience has a basic familiarity with his world. He
reminds his audience what sort of mestos the milk bars were, but does not need to explain what
a mesto is. On another level, Burgess uses this moment to give the reader some indication of the
setting. Through this commentary of Alex s, the reader s subconscious mind is able to pick up
on the fact that time has passed for Alex since the events of the story took place. This difference
in time between action and narration is resolved with the controversial twenty first chapter,
where Alex looks back at his younger days and the way he spent his time, and feels bored with it.
At the same time, the reader detects some trace of an unstable social and political situation
around Alex. The audience Alex is addressing with the familiar O my brothers is different from
the audience which Burgess is addressing the readers of his novel. While the readers of Burgess
novel are also the audience of Alex s story, Alex does not

German and Polish Family History
Family history is something most people do not know much about. This is unfortunate because
some people do not or are unable to value their families past. Family history is important for many
different reasons. It can be used to meet family members a person never knew about and for
educational purpose. I was fortunate enough to have my grandparents still alive to tell me about
their great grandparents and grandparents. I never truly understand how interesting and important it
is to know about where my family came from until I did this project. My family consists of Polish

Children were working as young as seven sometimes even younger. Children were also missing
school for work and working long debilitating hours. Children often worked in factories because
they were small and more children could fit intern this would lead to more work getting done.
Children also had smaller hands and this allowed them to fix machines if they were broken.
However, machines are dangerous and would sometimes injure or cut off a hand or finger of a
child. In present day there are many laws benefiting how many hours a child can work based on
their age. The federal child labor provisions, authorized by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
of 1938, also known as the child labor laws, were enacted to ensure that when young people
work, the work is safe and does not jeopardize their health, well being or educational
opportunities. These provisions also provide limited exemptions (U.S. Dept. of child labor). Child
labor laws are now in place to protect children while they work. Children can now work safely and

Renaissance Festival And Its Effect On American Culture

all there was back then. The only rational people were the King and Queen, and any other royalty.
A lot of stuff has changed since the medieval times in Europe, and the experience was extraordinary.
At some point timeI had learned about the medieval times and what the time period was like, but
never really had the experience. What exactly is the RenaissanceFestival? I found this to be a

The Organic Foods Selection Between Ten Projects
INTRODUCTION
This case study exanimate the Organic Foods selection between ten projects, totaled €208
million. However, evidence suggest that the Organic sales have been static since 1990, the
managers needed to introduce more new products to expand the market presence and boost the
company sales. Although the Organic Food board of directors limited the capital budget from €
80 million. The challenge of this case is the selection and allocation of the scares funds among
those compelling projects.
This paper will be divided in three section. The first section will be discussed about the possible
threat of the hostile takeover. The second part will be discussed about the financial analysis of the
projects the potential problems comes with it and it will consider the division of the projects in the
aggregate project plan. Finally, the third part will provide recommendations of the projects to select
to the Board of Directors, followed by some comments and implications in the conclusion section.
HOSTILE TAKEOVER
The potential threat of hostile takeover and the importance of 1993 for Organic Foods
A hostile takeover is a situation in purchase and sale transaction which take place against the will of
the board of directors of a purchased company (Puziak and Martyniuk, 2012). In Organic Foods, the
sales have been static since 1990, the management attribute this to the low population growth in
northern Europe and market saturation in other areas.

Dallas Cowboys History
Who are the top linebackers in Dallas Cowboys history? Football is a game that s ultimately won
at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Dallas Cowboys currently have 12 players
who ve been enshrined out of their 14 overall members in the Hall. 8 have made it on offense, 4
have made it on defense, and though getting after the quarterback starts from the D lineman, the
Cowboys have had a few second level defenders at linebacker that impacted their defense to

as Thomas Hollywood Henderson, Dexter Coakley, Ken Norton Jr. and Eugene Lockhart come
to mind, but in my overall examination, three players standout most who left their hard work

Dallas Cowboys. 3) OLB, DeMarcus Ware: The 6 foot 4, 258 pound sack machine is still recording
double digit sacks at age 32. Ware, a versatile hybrid type, who was projected to be a DE/OLB

Similarities Between V For Vendetta And 1984
Overcome, Perish, 1984 and V for Vendetta
Alan Moore and George Orwell s stylistic writing choices and parallels between fascist
governments and the methods used to oppose them in their pieces V for Vendetta and 1984 with
the use of rhymes and television to represent a biased sense of view and salvation left in history,
and how the Party uses their own symbols to repress that salvation.
1984 and V for Vendetta both take place in a Great Britain controlled by a totalitarianistic society
with non conformist characters who take on that society with a unique approach. Winston Smith
uses a private rebellion between himself and Julia as his nonconformity against the Inner Party. In
V for Vendetta, however, V s take on resisting the NorsefireParty is very direct and outspoken to
the public. In their own ways, they both hide their hatred for the Party. Winston himself keeps
his meetings with Julia hush hush in Mr. Charrington s room, while V s identity is never
revealed, always wearing a mask. Symbols play a key role in establishing the stories of Winston
and V. 1984 s chant for the Brotherhood is the Oranges and Lemons English nursery rhyme
refers to the bells of churches in London that extends on by people who matter to Winston; and
everyone who betrays him. Mr. Charrington gives him the first piece, but is revealed to be a part
of the Thought Police, Julia, who betrays him at the end of it all before her mental death, and O
Brian, who instead of his savior becomes his torturer. The Fifth of November is also a rhyme
that s based off real events, referencing Guy Fawkes s failed plan to blow up the English
Parliament on November 5th, 1605. Both rhymes are tied into Great Britain and a passion that
varies between the protagonists, providing them with their only link to the past. Television is
also a main symbol for the government s control both the telescreens in 1984 and the telly in V
for Vendetta broadcast only the Party s views and bias. Gordon, a side character in V for Vendetta,
airs his uncensored skit on television as an unintentional way of oppressing the glorification of
Chancellor Sutler, before being killed and dragged away from his own home. The slogans for both

Theme Of Nature In Victor Frankenstein
Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of
heaven, (mathew 19:14). This sentiment can be applied to many aspects in Mary Shelley s
gothic novel Frankenstein; From Victor frankenstein s idolatry by his parents to Victor s own
dereliction of his creation even stretching to victor s foil Robert Walton whose feeling of
isolation has familial ties attached to it. Shelley explores the multiple thematic subjects of nurture
V.S. nature, responsibility, and negligence thus perpetuating the thought that man is a direct
product if his environment. The way Robert Walton was raised contributes to his longing for
fulfillment and his want to be more than he is. Robert longs to be accepted and he fills this
voyage will do just that. I shall satiate my ardent curiosity...and may tread a land never before
imprinted by the foot of man, (Shelley 2).Robert feels this voyage will validate him. Shelley
herself subtly indicts Victor s parents in exactly this way; and [shelley] suggests an even subtler
subtext of family conflict in the letters Walton writes to Margaret, (Claridge). Robert wants this
voyage to give him the recognition he lacks. It can be argued this is due to a lack of acceptance by
his Father. these volumes were my study day and night...my father s dying injunction had forbidden
my uncle to allow me to embark in a seafaring life, (Shelley 2). Waltons affluent background and

Using Multiple Regression Project For New Stores

05JUL2015 Introduction Pam and Susan s is a discount department store that currently has 250
chain stores located throughout the South. To sustain its recent continuous expansion into the
Border States and Southwest, identification of the sites for new stores has become an essential
factor of its increasing strategic planning. The current store decisions are based on the
traditional process of estimating sales potential with demographic analyses, site visits and
studies by the company s real estate department. A subjective approach was developed to
classify the potential sites to the competitive type of the trading zone. However, there are
ongoing concerns regarding the subjectivity of the competitive type classifications, and whether
this method can predict sales potentials at new sites. The goal of this project is to build a
multiple regression model based on the census data obtained from stores trading zones and
individual stores, to effectively predict sales potentials at new sites. Data The gathered data
contains demographics and economics of the trading zones, and size, composition and sales of
the store. There is a total of 13 major categories of variables including population (%black, %

Art Vs. Art Education
Art is defined as the expression or application of humans creative skills and imagination. Art is
found in almost everywhere in our day to day lives. Without peoples imagination and creative
skills we wouldn t have buildings, technology and entertainment. Creativity is a important subject
in society, yet the subject being taught in schools is on a decline. How can we live in such an
advancing society when our future generations are not learning how to use their imagination or
how to apply their creative skills? Although people argue that more class time needs to be put
towards math and science classes, art classes need to increase in our schools. Art has many benefits
on the brain and Students who have access to artsin or out of school tend to have better academic
results, better workforce opportunities, and more civic engagement (National Endowment for the
Arts). Art educationneeds to improve because it is a helpful stress reliever, important for
childhood development and helps students succeed in school and life. Many people
underestimate the benefits of art on the brain. Art not only is a great stress reliever, but it is also
a tool used to clear your head and help tackle issues causing stress. A study done by the University
of Westminer found that taking a 30 min trip to a art museum can significantly lower your stress
level (Bergado). Observing art also sparks parts of the brain that are associated with emotions and

Creativism a Constant Company of Humans Throughout History
As Carl Gustav Jung wisely stated, there is a certain fascination with regard to creativity.
Creativity expresses itself in many different forms, shapes, sizes, colours and sounds. It is a
concept difficult to grasp as it is broad. However most people would think of themselves as being
able to judge who and what is actually creative. But what exactly is creativity? Amible (1983)
defines creativity as the production of ideas, insights and also products that are both, original
and adaptive. Originality in this context refers to novelty of an idea and adaptation to the
appropriateness. This is the definition predominantly used in creativity research (Sternberg
Lubart 1999; Simonton Damian,2013) and is therefore used in this paper as well. In historical
terms, creativity was a constant accompanist of human kind. We had to change the environment,
and invent tools according to our needs in order to survive. Thus, creativity is a universal
occurrence in all cultures (Simonton Ting, 2010). However, which idea is assumed to be
original and appropriate, so considered to be creative, depends strongly on context and time
(Njistad et al., 2010). As stated by Nijstad et al. (2010) the work of Vincent van Gough is a good
example of a different perception of creativity in different times. When Van Gough died he was a
poor man but his works are sold for millions today. Similar is the example of the French post
impressionist artist Paul Gauguin who was not well appreciated until

Stereotypes In Cinderella
Cinderella is one of the most well known fairytale around the world. It is a story about a girl
who lives with her step mother and her 2 step sisters, she is not treated with respect, more like a
servant. She mets the prince, and then ultimately he saves her from her step mother. Cinderella
highlights key issues with gender roles and stereotypes. It suggests when determining a woman s
worth, it is based on their physical appearance, not on other aspects of them, such as personalities
or beliefs. These ideas are clearly evident in sections of the film when Cinderellais determined as
ugly because of her original rag like clothing, this idea changes when she is dressed in her ball
gown, because of this the prince falls in love with her.

Once the gold ore is no longer able to be mined economically, all of the salvageable equipment is
removed and the reclamation process begins. The goal of reclamation is to return the mine site to
its pre mining state while minimizing erosion, and protecting the public and surrounding wildlife.
Portals that lead to the underground workings are sealed, but should have ports to monitor if there
is a buildup of toxic gases or water. Reclaiming the surface area where the mine office, bathhouse,
and processing facilities were located starts with demolition of the buildings and removal of
equipment and materials. A special requirement for reclaiming gold processing plants is to rinse

Paper money in the United States and other countries used to be backed by gold which became
known as the gold standard . This meant that a person could trade paper money for its equivalent
value in gold bars. Eventually it became too difficult to maintain this standard so it is not
currently used by any country. One of the most well known uses for gold is in jewelry which
makes up about 78 percent of gold consumption. Gold is desirable for jewelry manufacturers
because of its luster, resistance to tarnish, and ability to be shaped easily. However, pure (24
karat) gold is too soft to withstand the stress put on most jewelry, so it is often made into an alloy
with silver or copper to make it harder. Another use of gold is in electronics and computers due to
its high conductivity. Connectors, soldered joints, and connecting strips have low voltages running
through them that are easily interrupted by corrosion, which is why gold s resistance to tarnish
makes it perfect for these applications. In the medical industry, gold alloys are used for crowns,
fillings, and other orthodontic appliances because it is chemically inert and non allergenic. Also,
radioactive gold isotopes can serve as a radiation source when treating certain cancers. Interestingly,
small amounts of gold can be injected into the eyelids of a person that suffers from lagophthalmos,
which is the inability to completely close their eyes (King,

Essay on Symbols of The Great Gatsby
The 1920s were a time of big dreams, moral decline, and hardships in America . The Roaring
Twenties were a different time altogether with its bootleggers and speakeasies, women becoming
more independent, the poor becoming poorer, but through all this was The American Dream
keeping the hope afloat. F. Scott Fitzgeraldcaptured this era in his book, The Great Gatsby. Through
his many symbols he illustrates the hopes, the forgotten God, and the oppressed Americans of the
Twenties. The symbols in The Great Gatsby help convey several different themes, from wealth to
loss of morals, to poverty.

wistful, hopeless dream. Once Gatsby s dream is within reach, his usual parties and

Gatsby s grandiose achievement. With Daisy s disapproval the spectroscopic parties cease. To
preserve her reputation Gatsby empties his mansion of lights and servants. And finally only
darkness and ghostly memories tenant the deserted house (Koster 37). The green light for
Gatsby was a five year dream. The light is Daisy and hope for the future; however, the green
light remains forever across the bay from him, just out of reach. God seems to be just out of
reach as well. God is portrayed as a billboard that watches over the immoral occurrences of the
valley of ashes. He is nothing more than a pair of eyes put there for business purposes and then
forgotten. God was put on the back burner in the 1920s , while social lives and personal wants
were brought to the front burner. But above the grey land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift
endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg...Evidently some
wild wag of an oculist set them there to fatten his practice in the borough of Queens and then sank

The Purpose Of Spending A Day Without Technology
Let s give our soul the rest that truly deserves. The purpose of spending a day without technology is
to detoxify ourselves from the continuous barrage of information. Just as Mark Bittman mentions in
his article, I felt connected to myself rather than my computer. I had time to think, and distance
from normal demands. (4) We are so accustomed to rely on technologythat we seem to forget what
would become of us without it. Internet, radio, television, cell phones, video games and other
technological amenities are part of our daily life, in a way that sometimes we can not see reality
outside a screen. We have shelved conversations face to face, the pleasure of enjoying the birds
sing or simply appreciate nature around us. Professor David Levy declares, Living a good life
requires a kind of balance, a bit of quiet. There are questions about the limits of the brain and the
body, and there are parallels here to the environmental movement. (2) Talking about the
environment, not only helps us to live without the use of technology for one day but it helps the
environment as well. A great way to save money and take care of the environment is to decide to
give up the technology just for one day. We need to take care of our soulor inner self or however we
want to call it, not for vanity but sanity. Since we get up in the morning and until we go to bed at
night we are bombarded with data and information such as emails, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,

women are one of the many things that have been affected due to the Bible, a lot of times
negatively. Women throughout the Bible have been described as either being lesser than men or as
the source of evil in this world. The most obvious instance of this being shown is through the figure
of Eve. More times than not, Eve is blamed for the banishment of mankind from the garden of Eden
as she gave a fruit from the tree of knowledge to Adam and they both consumed it. Due to this,
many people see her as being the devil in disguise and often, many artists choose to depict like
that. While many artists choose to depict Eve as evil, some choose to depict Eve in another way.
Michelangeloand Raffaello Sanzio, known also as Raphael, were two of these types of artists who
challenged the existing ideas of Eve through their art. Both artists were heavily influenced by
Leonardo da Vinci, called the treatise of psychology , who may have taught them to pay close
attention the effect the emotions and actions had on the people in their art, which can be seen
throughout the following paintings. Through Michelangelo s Creation of Adam and Fall and
Expulsion from the garden of Eden on the ceiling of

The Importance Of Student Apathy In School
Student apathy creates a detrimental toll on a student s mindset. An apathetic student fails to have
production in the classroom. These students would rather fail instead of trying to keep up with
their schoolwork. Failing is easier than running the rick of being seen as average or below average.
(De Lay, Swan 106). Student apathy fails to create an engaging culture in a school district. Since
students feel the affects of student apathy, they often perceive themselves as unsuccessful (De Lay,
Swan 112). In a school majorly affected by student apathy, students associate school with the
purpose of passing grades. Educationmust hold a purpose and seen as an importance to students.
Engagement and achievement in the classroom does not matter when they have passing grades
(Christman 3). When students receive their degree, they do not care how hard they worked to get
it. A degree can lead to a job, and that is what matters in the real world. Students have a
professional goal in mind whether it is a job or college. Classes that do not relate to the real world
do not matter to a majority of these students. Engagement exhibits itself in classrooms, which helps
students in everyday life (De Lay, Swan). Apathy presents itself in more than high schoolstudents.
Senioritis was once the only major apathetic problem in schools. Student apathy has crept its
way into middle and elementary grade levels. As students reach the end of their public school
education, they often slack off in their schoolwork, which is known as senioritis. With little
pressure on the seniors, they take the year off by producing as little amount of work as possible.
Students affected by senioritis are not prepared for college or the real world. Their reading and
writing skills deteriorate when they are not learning in their senior year The students who go to
college after this stay in school for longer than the usual four years (Puente 1). As student apathy
displays across all grade levels, it becomes a major problem. Relationships between students and
teachers as well as the teaching methods used highly affects the lower grade levels. Students bored
in the classroom often check out and fail to stay engaged in their class (De Lay, Swan 111). Little

International Rescue Committee (IRC):
For my practice experience I am working at International Rescue Committee in Oakland California.
I will be working from August 29th until I complete my 240 hours requirement for the PE. As an
intern I am working with the Economic Empowerment Program and my role in that capacity
includes helping refugees with resume building, job searches, job applications and interview
preparations. My other roles include accompanying clients to job interviews and employment
advocacy on behalf of clients. I also do some light administrative tasks like case noting, check entry,
client tracking and filing of client documents.
Introduction
Refugees have had a long history in the US beginning in WWII. But in recent times, the refugee
crisis has reached a critical mass around the world with continued conflict in Syria, Afghanistan,
Iraq and the Congo just to name a few. There are unprecedented numbers of refugees seeking help
in many countries around the world. The US pledged to take 10,000 from Syria alone this year and
is promising to increase that number to 50,000 in the coming years. To tackle the high volume task
of resettling the US government relies on non profit humanitarian organization and other NGO
agencies to help place refugees in

British Petroleum Case Study
1Introduction
1.1Introduction to CSR and Ethics
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to companies taking responsibility for their impact on
society. It can bring benefits in terms of risk management, cost savings, access to capital, customer
relationships, human resource management, and innovation capacity.
Ethical dilemma, states that it is a situation that happens when two or more social work morals are
in conflict like the environmental pollution and the unsafely performance conditions. It is
important for the company s success is to act ethically.
1.2Introduction to the Report
The report is aimed at CSR initiatives that have been and continues to be the subject of contentious
debate in recent years. Such initiatives entail that businesses do their bit, beyond what the law may
require them to do, to give back to the society in which they operate and make profits from. These
initiatives often do not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For this purpose another key element in British Petroleum s external communication is the set up of
a corporate website (www.bp.com) that gives extensive coverage of social issues, including detailed
annual social performance reports, value and mission statements, speeches by key corporate
officials, location studies, and detailed guidelines on ethical conduct.
British Petroleum has also developed an Intranet system for the purpose of communicating
corporate values to employees and business partners as well as guidelines and management control
techniques to facilitate implementation of corporate commitments. Even though British Petroleum
does not explicitly make claims to leadership on CSR issues, it recognises that British Petroleum
has changed its approach to social responsibilities, and that British Petroleum is praised as having
been a catalyst for change in the oil industry as a whole (Social and environmental review, 2000).

A Mathematical Model Of Mechanical Seals
LITERATURE REVIEW
1.Etsion and Burstein[12] developed a mathematical model to allow performance prediction of all
non contacting mechanical seals having a regular micro surface structure in the form of
hemispherical pores. Seal performance such as equilibrium face separation, friction torque and
leakage across the seal are calculated for a range of seal pressures, pore sizes and pore ratio of the
ring surface area. An optimum pore size was found that depends on other variables and corresponds
to maximum axial stiffness and minimum friction torque.
2.Wang and Kato[13] presented their work on texturing Silicon Carbide (SiC) seals operating in
water for better performance. In this work, the stationary surface of the seal is textured using a
Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) process. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of micro
pits on the critical seizure load. The authors found that surface texturing is an effective way to
stabilize friction, reduce friction coefficient and to expand the low friction range of SiC seals
working in water.
3.Siripuram[14] presents a numerical study of the effects of different shapes of micro asperities in
sliding surface lubrication when hydrodynamic films are found. Positive and negative asperities of
constant height (depth) are considered with circular, square, diamond, hexagonal and triangular
cross sections. The results indicate that triangular asperities giving the smallest leakage rate and
square asperities giving a largest

The Possible Contribution of Succession Planning to...
The Possible Contribution of Succession Planning on Organizational Performance
Introduction
Succession planning, which is often also referred to as knowledge management, is one of the ways
in which information is kept within an organization even though the people who work within that
organization come and go. Those who make policies in business, and those who make policies that
assist other businesses, have started encouraging businesses in recent years to learn to help
themselves through succession planning and the management and transfer of knowledge,
specifically between people who are leaving the organization and people who are just entering that
organization (Dyck, Mauws, Starke, Mischke, 2002). One of the reasons for this encouragement is
due to the fact that an adjustment of roles through the transferring of knowledge is an important
way to help any business move through a change of ownership or simply a shift when a long time
employee leaves the company.
Ownership is often not the issue, but management and other developed skills are very significant
when a person is trying to ensure that another person clearly understands the job which he is
taking over and will be performing in the future (Dyck, Mauws, Starke, Mischke, 2002). Many
businesses do not have any serious plans as they relate to succession, and that can be detrimental to
the entire organization. The decision making that would generally take place is disturbed when
people leave the company but do

Tulips In The Botany Of Desire By Michael Pollan
The Tulip has grown to be a symbol for beauty, grabbing the vain eye of humans all around the
world since the 1600 s. Associated with the bulbous plant is an everlasting craze, driving people
into a frenzy and showing the volatility of financial markets. The symbiotic relationship between
humans and plants has always been thought to benefit humans, but what if in fact the desire behind
plants, in this case the tulip, is their driving force for survival? In the book The Botany of Desire, the
author Michael Pollan hypothesizes that tulips have developed an evolutionary design to enhance
beauty, making them constantly desirable and reproducible. Although tulips serve no practical

We are instinctively drawn to gorgeous flowers, much like the way bees are. One theory could
have to do with flowers being the precursor to fruits, which serve as a food source for humans.
Since the creation of mankind, humans have been built to be foragers, evolving to spy flowers in
an abundant landscape of colors. The humans that were successful foragers were the first to find
sweet fruit to sustain them and the ones to survive. This could have resulted in natural selection
favoring good foragers that could find fruits, remember their location, and differentiate them. This
proposes the thought that maybe all humans recognize floral beauty in the same way because we
are products of our ancestors, who evolved to be meticulous

Metaphors In American Childhood
We could have ran through every backyard in North America until we got to Panama (Dillard 48).
This is just one of Dillard s many metaphors throughout the novel that portrays a deep awareness of
space and time. Through metaphors Dillard captures a true depth in the novel that regular sentences
can not obtain. Normal sentences might pull a reader in, however metaphors can truly captivate the
reader to imagine all new possibilities. Dillard shows through metaphors of sight, time, and
understandingthat as you grow older your awareness of time and spacedeepens in understanding.
Sight is one of the few senses that a young child is able to use freely. A young child can have an
outlook that looks completely different than what an adult has. In An American Childhood,
Dillard explores her Pittsburgh and sees many things including, which she describes as, a black
phalanx (34). This metaphor is explicit because a phalanx is meant for a mass of people, not a
few nuns that are walking down the street. Phalanx describes these nuns well because it is a word
Dillard attributes to something she sees as unknown and mystifying. The mystifying nuns represent
one of the first real things that Dillard sees in Pittsburgh that frightens her. Dillard uses this
metaphor as a sign of fear when amongst the nuns, but the reader can see through her word choice
that the awareness she has of the world is pretty open. Dillard is able to see nuns in her travels and
think deeply about her thoughts.

distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Repetitive
behaviors may occur; including mirror checking, excessive grooming, skin picking, reassurance

Women are usually obsessed with their legs and breasts, while men are obsessed with muscle
size and genitals. Body dysmorphic disorder also shows up in other countries. BDD is a
common disorder among individuals seeking aesthetic surgery in Iran. In Brazil, prevalence of
the disorder in dermatologic patients was evaluated in a sample of 150 patients in a cosmetic
group, 150 in a general dermatology group, and 50 control subjects. Prevalence in the cosmetic
group was 14%, compared with 6.7% for the general group, and 2% for the control group.
CAUSES Exact causes of the condition have not been verified, though there are plenty theories that
exist. Heredity may have a big impact on the development of body dysmorphic disorder. Prevalence
of the disorder is four times higher in first degree relatives of individuals that already have the
condition than in relatives that do not have it. Brain anomalies may be important causes. Functional
abnormalities in visual processing and limbic systems have been documented. A study found
disturbances in whole brain structural topologic organization in subjects with body dysmorphic
disorder. Another study investigating the potential role of early life sexual, physical, or emotional
abuse in the development of body dysmorphic disorder found that subjects with the condition had
more retrospective experiences of sexual and physical abuse during childhood or adolescence

Multiple Characters In Anna Karenina By Lev Tolstoy
In Anna Karenina, Lev Tolstoy describes multiple characters in depth and gives the readers the
opportunity to create and change their opinions about most of them as the plot develops. The
novel begins with a rather striking quote, taken from Romans 12:19: Vengeance is mine, I will
repay (Tolstoy XXV). This sentence s meaning in it s biblical context and full length, is that it is
not up to people to punish others for their wrong doings, but that God will eventually take
revenge and repay them, for it is his right and duty to do so. Focusing on the meaning of this
excerpt, I believe that it is connected to the outcomes of Anna and Vronsky s affair, but also to
that of the life of Dolly Oblonskaya and her husband, as well as other characters . In this paper I
will support my interpretation of the reasons why I believe that despite the fact that Anna Karenina
appears to suffer the consequences of her loveaffair with Alexei Vronsky because she is a woman
more than her brother Stepan Oblonsky, the faith that the author assigns to her with allusions since
the beginning of the book, is connected to the fact that cheating is fundamentally wrong according
to Tolstoy s perspective, and that her punishment is a consequence of the above mentioned
quotation. To sustain my understanding of this theme I will make a comparison between Anna and
some of the other main characters who are involved in a romantic relationship or, as in Dolly s
case, stuck in an unhappy marriage.

ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY: MOOD DISORDERS
A mood disorder is the term given for a group of diagnoses in the DSM IV TR classification
system where a disturbance in the person s emotional mood is hypothesised to be the main
underlying feature. The classification is known as mood (affective) disorders in ICD 10.
English psychiatrist Henry Maudsley proposed an overarching category of affective disorder. The
term was then replaced by mood disorder, as the latter term refers to the underlying or longitudinal
emotional state, whereas the former refers to the external expression observed by others.

Depression without a history of mania
In almost all countries, women are at least twice as likely as men to experience episodes of
severe unipolar depression. Approximately half of people with unipolar depression recover
within six weeks and 90% recover within a year, some without treatment (Kessler, 2002; Kendler
et al., 1997). However, most of them have at least one other episode of depression later on their
lives (Boland Keller, 2002).
The DSM IV TR approach to classifying mood disorders recognizes several subtypes of
depression, placing special emphasis on the distinction between unipolar and bipolar disorders.

The History of Female Genital Mutilation and Its Consequences
Female Genital Mutilation According to many Americans, female genital mutilation is one of the
most hurtful practices ever conducted. During this operation, female genitals are partly or
entirely removed with the goal of inhibiting the woman s sexual feelings. In my opinion, there is
no reason for this operation to be happening. This usually occurs before the female experiences
puberty (between the ages of four and eight). The female can suffer for days, weeks, or even
months at a time. This ritual is widely practiced in many parts of Africa and by migrants from
African countries in other parts of the world (Karmaker 20 28). If Americans research and read
what people say about this operation, they can understand what these women and... Show more

Performing this operation or having it on girls of is under the age of 18 is illegal due to the

convicted was a man named Khalid Adem, he cut his two year old daughters clitoris with a pair
of scissors in 2006 and was sentenced to ten years in prison. When a female gets the surgery
afterwards the scar can be reopened before intercourse or giving birth which causes more pain
for the female. Most women are getting this surgery are the ones with a high ranking reputation
in their societies. Female genital mutilation has affected over 500,000 girls and women in
Europe, 75,000 live in Great Britain, 65,000 in France and 30,000 in Germany. Most of these
people are getting affected are migrants. This operation is affecting their health. They shouldn t
affect their health if they were already healthy before the operation was given. I think if you put
some men and women in a room and ask them how they feel about female genital mutilation, the
women would get into a heat discussion about how it s unfair and it should be happening to
young girls and women. I think some of the men would agree but some would just be like it s

In Forests and the end of second millennium in forests in a full world (2001) George M.
Woodwell points out that the most successful civilizations have decayed as forests where
destroyed and replaced with scrublands. The scrublands were further impoverished by intensive
grazing and erosion until the underlying rocks emerged and became the land scape. He goes
further giving an example of the ancient Syria, Persia, throughout the Levant, and the

forests and the impoverishment of the landscape. The same process happened with respect to
Carthage in North Africa.
We also have contemporary examples of land degradation from Haiti and Madagascar, now over
populated and deforested and degraded to the point where their land scape are dysfunctional,
incapable of supporting organized society. The rivers no longer flow in established channels,
water from storms in mountains appears as floods in low lands and carries silt to fill harbors and

Characterism In E. L. Doctorow s Ragtime
Coalhouse Walker s character in E.L. Doctorow s Ragtime is a representation of the social

was a time of great creative and industrial influence, this was also a time of social conflict for
African American people. From the beginning of American History, Black men have struggled with
maintaining a positive, fulfilling image in the American society; specifically, in the media during
social change. This essay will explore Coalhouse Walker s transformation from the well to do

possible improvements will go unidentified. An example would be to reexamine the EHR

more beneficial for the employees and patients. There are numerous EHR programs that are
being developed and/or constantly undergoing improvements. Although a program is effective
for the facility and patients, it does not signify that it is providing the best quality of care. Lastly,
health care facilities that use IT to improve their capabilities for service innovation and service
quality have the potential to enhance their organizations strategic and operational performance
(Thambusamy Palvia, 2011, p. 17). Innovation in the health care industry is pertinent for
providers to be able to ensure not only the quality of care is exceptional but also to contribute in

Jeannie s breathing rate compared to the average, it showed that Jeannie had a higher breathing rate,
which showed that the hypothesis was not completely wrong.
There were a bucket of factors that might be at play, for instance current health condition, medical

mentioned above, current health condition was a crucial part of the experiment at that moment, as
the instant result would be used to construct the lab report. Medical history was another concern, it
was important to learn more about the subject past medical history and predict the outcome of the
experiment. Smoking habits and second hand smokes were the important factors of the experiment
as tar would not be filtered and it would coat alveoli directly, affecting the breathing rate. The vital

Essay on The Cold War
The Cold War
The Cold War had been going on since the end of the Second World War. Although America and
Russia had been allies during the war against Nazi Germany, their alliance had always been one of
necessity. Now that their common enemy had been defeated, they were able to focus their
attentions on each other. America was a democratic, capitalist nation, and the Soviet Unionwas
communist which meant that they were on opposing sides of the spectrum. They were so strongly
opposed that peaceful co existence was seen by all to be impossible.
America and Cuba had had a troubled relationship. Despite being geographically close to America,
Castro (leader of Cuba) chose to ally himself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was welcomed by Castro, who played on Cuban s fears, that America would try an invasion.
America had, in 1961, attempted to start an anti revolution against Castro in what became known
as the Bay of Pigs incident, so called because Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs with
American help to begin their campaign to oust Castro. The Bay of Pigs failed badly, humiliating
newly appointed President Kennedy.
Kennedy was determined not to allow the Cuban Missile Crisis to tarnish his name any further.
How he responded to the threat would affect more than his political career, the fate of the world
rested on his shoulders, as a nuclear war would have disastrous consequences. Despite the
popular Western attitudes towards the Soviets, Khrushchev was actually a very reasonable man,
and neither he nor President Kennedy wanted a nuclear war. However, neither man could be seen
to back down because it would be seen as weakness, which would be exploited by the other side.
However it seemed like there was no way for both men to be satisfied in this situation.
On 22nd October 1962 Kennedy ordered a blockade of Cuba to stop more missiles reaching the
island. Soviet ships continued on their course regardless, only turning round once they had reached
the blockade. One ship, however, passed by the blockade headed straight to Cuba.

Governess And Ninny
When comparing The Ninny and The Governess , the reader can see the similarities and
differences in the text. In both text the author created the characters to have the same qualities.
On the other hand, the author of The Ninny created one of the main characters, which was the
employer as a man, while in The Governess the author created the employer as a woman. In both
of the short stories, there are many similarities. Both of the employers make notes about what
they need to take money away for. Simon states, But I made a note of it. Why would I make a
note of it if I didn t give it to you? (179), this quotation is showing how the mistress made a note
to take away money. Also, in the two short stories, the two working girls began to cry because of
the way they are being treated. Lastly, the employers both get mad at their workers for not
speaking up for themselves and having low confidence. Together, The Ninny and The Governess
are similar in many different ways.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One difference that they both have is the genres. The Ninny is realistic fiction, meaning it can
happen in real life, and The Governess is a drama, meaning it is a play for theater. In The Ninny
, the employer was going to pay at the end a total of eleven rubles. On the other hand, in The
Governess , the employer was going to pay at the end a total of ten rubles. The text states, Take
three from fourteen. That leaves eleven, (175). Neil Simon states on page 180, Ten Rubles will be
fine. The two textual evidence I have provided shows how the employers gave a different amount
of money. Another difference from the short stories is what is stolen from Vayna. In The Ninny ,
Vayna s boots were stolen. Although, in The Governess , Vayna s shoes were stolen. The two short
stories have several

Tax Internship Program
I am very excited to apply for the Corporate tax internship program with Southwest airlines.
Southwest Airlines has a great culture when it comes to employee development, customer
satisfaction and training. Recently I graduated with an BS Accounting degree from the University
of Texas at Arlington and am currently pursuing the MS Taxation degree at UT Arlington.
Corporate Tax field has been a great interest to me as working in this field allows an employee to
work on different tax engagements of various companies, directly working with the IRS and
learning different aspects of tax compliance. After taking individual tax class at my college I came
to the conclusion that tax is definitely a great career choice. Southwest airlinesare a fortune

The conditions of work and pay are very low, making decisions in the public and private sectors

torture others; these include the army, police and prison. Indonesia is a country of dictatorship,
meaning that whatever the leader says, happens. In January 2011 three soldiers were filmed
kicking and abusing Papuans, which lead to eight to ten months of imprisonment. Caning is a
form of judicial punishment in Aceh with at least 72 people caned for varies offences, including
drinking alcohol, gambling and for being alone with someone of the opposite sex but not

November 2010. The man was believed to be a Papuan separatist fighter and they demanded him
to reveal the location of a weapon cache. The man said they repeatedly beat and suffocated him.
He reportedly had his head smashed into a wall, was burnt by cigarettes, had a hot piece of iron or

Gangs In The Outsiders
Gangs in general can be good or bad. A gang is usually a group of friends or people with
similarities. They usually put people in danger. Some people consider their friend group a gang.
These people usually dress the same and act the same depending in what gang you are in. People
in gangs can be criminals and they usually are. Criminal gangs do all kinds of bad things or
anything illegal. Some people in gangs feel alone in life so they joined a gangand it makes them feel
better. People in gangs are usually poor and sad. If someone has lost all their money and family
and they have nothing left they will probably join a gang. For some people their gang is like
family to them. People in gangs are usually called gangsters. Others in gangs are totally fine and
they just want to have fun. The typical stereotype for gangs is that they are bad and people
should stay away from them. Not all gangs are bad. There are so many different types of gangs
and not all for them are bad. For example the greasers are not totally bad.... Show more content on

The main gangs in the Outsiders are the Greasers and the Socs. They have their differences and
their similarities. The greaser act the same as all of the other greasers. And the Socs all act the
same and dress the same as the other Socs. The gangs in this book can get really violent. They go
from punching each other to attacking each other with blades. A blade is kinda like a knife and a
pocketknife in one. It seems like being a part of a gang can be rough.
The Socs are not poor at all. They are the rich and popular gang. They think they are way better
than the greasers. Socs usually wear nice shoes with some type of plaid shirt and khakis. They
are considered attractive and very rough and tough. They are kind of the bad guys in this novel.
They do not take drugs or rob any stores but they are good at picking fights. Over all the Socs are
pretty mean people to the

America s Free Trade Agreement
Most people from Mexico, just like in Veracruz, lived a simple life. Their means of income was
through farming, so obviously this was their bread and butter, but not until when NAFTA, the
North America Free Trade Agreement, was implemented between the United States, Mexico, and
Canada (The Other Side of Immigration). Urrea states you d think that at least there would be
beans to eat, but the great Mexican bean growing industrial farms sold much of their crop to the
United States(45). Since then, most Mexicans, especially those people from Veracruz, was affected.
Even though the primary reason for this agreement was to eliminate trade and investment barriers
between Canada, U.S., and Mexicoto make produce less expensive, this brought a... Show more

Although the agricultural sector of Mexico was affected by NAFTA, the country has another source
of income to keep their economy running gasoline and oil, tourism, and the remittance that is being
sent through Western Union by families, who earn money in the United States, to their loved ones
in Mexico. It was documented in 2008 that there were $25 billion that was sent back to Mexico
(The Other Side of Immigration), but even though the country [Mexico] earns through oil, tourism,
and remittance, it was still not helpful for the Welton 26 and most Mexicans who migrated illegally
to have job opportunities. That is why many Mexicans like the Welton 26 illegally migrated to the
United States for better opportunities and to earn more money to provide for the ones they left
behind.
Another sad truth why the Welton 26 and most Mexicans chose to migrate illegally here in the
United States was because the economy of Mexico is in a dilapidated situation because of the
corruption of their government officials. Most Mexicans would say that they are suffering because
they are neglected by their politicians no matter how hard they work (The Other Side of
Immigration). Urrea shares, and in the economy of hunger, which the fat men of the governments

What You Pawn I Will Redeem Essay
What You Pawn I Will Redeem by Sherman Alexie is a story that engages the issues of alcoholism
and homelessness from a personal indigenous perspective. Western cultures portrayal of alcoholism,
especially among indigenous communities, is a legacy of North America s colonialist history.
Various untruths about alcoholism have remained pervasive and though it does indeed remain a
problem in many indigenous communities the attempts to explain its pervasiveness have allowed
racist sentiments to take root. Outside groups attempts to provide aid and support to indigenous
people struggling with homelessness have helped but only offer a temporary fix to the damage
dealt. Alexie uses the experiences of his own life to provide the character of Jackson... Show more

We know this due to some of the dates that Jackson, the protagonist, uses; pinning his
grandmother s death to nineteen seventy two and that she died fifty years ago (Alexie). Though
this results in the year according to Jackson being 2022 any discrepancy given could be the result
of Jackson s unreliability as a narrator. Knowing this we can understand the historical context
properly and know how to apply this understanding properly. The personal history of the Author,
Sherman Alexie is incredibly important to gaining deeper understanding of Jackson. Alexie
during university changed his major from medicine to American Studies after succumbing to
fainting spells in anatomy class and after graduating and beginning writing he had developed a
drinking problem by the age of twenty three, upon learning that The Business of Fancydancing
was to be published, he immediately gave up alcohol. ( Sherman Alexie ). During the beginning
of the story Jackson gives a brief biography of himself, describing himself moving to Seattle
twenty three years ago for college, flunked out after two semesters, worked various blue and bluer
collar jobs ... and then went crazy. (Alexie). This shows that Jackson acts as something of an author
avatar for Alexie, acting out a potential future where Alexie flunked out of secondary education and
his drinking problem remained. In addition both Alexie and Jackson are from Spokane and share
the same culture and

The Environmental Issue Of Water Conservation
Water is essential for humanity s survival, and even though the world is largely covered by
water, only a small percentage is potable for human utilization. Approximately, on average,
120,000 gallons of water is used annually for a single family household (Galbraith). This alarming
number could be reduced dramatically for the efforts of water conservation and lowering water
bill prices for families could subsequently save money that could be used for other expenses. Thus,
conserving water would prove beneficial and advantageous to not just in Texas, but to everyone
else as well. Although environmental policies have not been as popular with Congress and the state
legislature, it is still an important issue to consider since there are only a limited amount of
resources for public use, such as water. Both the federal and state governments have enacted
policies towards the efforts of water conservation that mainly affect cities and corporations and
considered how it affects other organisms in the environment. One current environmental issue
between the U.S. federal and state governments is concerning about the efforts of water
conservation and other natural resources by passing several laws that mainly affect both cities and
companies that somewhat relate to preserving wildlife as well for the ecosystem. The reasons
initiating these legal changes are to conserve clean water for human consumption and to preserve
wildlife as well. Congress passed the Water PollutionControl Act

The Pros And Cons Of Cannibalism
As a human being, convincing a cannibal chieftain that I am not going to taste good for their
dinner, is actually a complicated situation to consider. Cannibalism is surprisingly not against the
United States law. It is misperceived that cannibalism is illegal. In reality, the reason why
cannibalism is seen as revolting is because of the thought of a person eating the flesh of another
person. Cannibalism is seen by people just like haggis and liver is seen as revolting to most
people. When it comes to ethics, there are different components that would claim the cannibal
eating me is morally unacceptable. This can be compared to killing another humanbeing for no
reason. Both of these cases contain the same common thought that killing people no matter what
the circumstance is morally incorrect. The majority of society believes that cannibalism and
homicide are both incorrect. This thought comes from three views. The three views that can be
used to describe if an action is morally correct are, the natural law theory, relativism, and moral
objectivism. These three views are looked at individually and not used together. The natural law of
theory deals with reasoning deduced from the nature of humanity throughout society. Relativism
deals with reasoning that is deduced within a certain culture. Moral objectivism deals with
reasoning deduced from universal morality. Cannibalism is not always seen as incorrect in all
societies. Some societies see cannibalism as a valid activity.

Pope Innocent III Capitularies
Sometime in the late 1100s to the early 1200s, the church s fought for and rose to a higher power.
Pope Innocent III was responsible for the new church law, called the canons, and church reform
that was established during this time. Pope Innocent III s time as the pope was really the main
turning point for the powers that the church had. This is evident in the canons that were established
and written by him and a council of the estimated over 1000 church officials of different titles,
during his time as pope. The canons are a clear representation of some of the exertion of new
found powers that the church had. The canons show how the rules and laws of religious related
things were passed on in a delegation from nobles and kings to church officials.... Show more

One of the more straight forward and raw legal documents that we read for class, called the
capitularies, were helpful in illustrating this fact. The capitularies were written throughout the late
700s and early in 800s and many of the problems addressed/rules made had to do with bishops
and churches. The capitularies hold many rules that can be seen as rules that the churches should
have been able to control themselves, which could be why they fought for more power later on.
One examples of these rules is the capitulary number five of the Paderborn capitularies that says, If
anyone kills a bishop or a priest or a deacon, he shall likewise pay with his life, (Loyn, 300). This
rule definitely seems like something that the churches should have control of themselves, but alas
rules like this were put into the hands of the king/lords of this time. The church was very much
controlled by a higher power in the early medieval times, which is evident from the difference if the
people in control that wrote the capitularies from the Carolingian Dynasty and the people that wrote
the canons when Innocent III was

Classism In Ancient Athens, Rome, And Han Dynasty
Classism in Ancient Athens, Rome, and Han Dynasty
Mathematics, philosophy, astronomy, and medicine are some of the significant contributions made
by the Greeks, and they were also notorious for their cultivated architecture and sculptures. The
Greek culture impacted the Roman Empire and several other civilizations; it remains transforming
present day cultures. The Han Dynasty is one of the most remarkable dynasties in Chinese history.
This dynasty incorporated about four hundred years of development and strengthening; it coexisted
with the duration of the Roman republic and the empire in the West. Momentous developments
occurred in the Han Dynasty. Rome advanced form being one of several city states to being the
core of the most magnificent empire in the world. In this essay, I will be discussing the classicism
of the 5th century Athens and how their culture still influences modern societies. I will also discuss
the Han Dynasty s significant developments and experiences that occurred during this dynasty. The
classicism of the Roman republic will also be discussed in this essay. One of the most influential
Greek city states was Athens. They used a democratic arrangement of government, and the
involvement in democratic operation was restricted to citizens. Social, economic, and political
situations impacted art; writing, sciences, and art thrived in fifth century BCE. Athletes, artists, and
great thinkers transpired out of ancient Greece. The origination of diverse art

  • 2. Porphyrias Lover And My Last Duchess Comparison Essay Comparison between Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess Browning had a place with the Victorian Age, an age where adore coincided with disarray, religion, and distress. Taking care of business, Browning is a writer of affection. His works delineate the different shades of feeling, regardless of whether it is the smooth stream of perfect otherworldly love in The Last Ride Together or the complexities of brain and nature of affection in Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess. To draw an examination between Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess, it is vital to comprehend the consistent theme between these two ballads. Both are sensational monologs in which the beau portrays his story of adoration and distress. While in Porphyrias Lover we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My Last Duchess is about an individual from the respectability conversing with a minister concerning his keep going spouse, who later on in the sonnet is uncovered to have been killed by the individual talking, who is going to wed his second wife. Porphyria s Lover gives an understanding into the brain of an uncommonly possessive significant other, who slaughters his partner keeping in mind the end goal to catch that impeccable snapshot of empathy (Afsari 12). Porphyria s Lover utilizes a rotating rhyme plot amid the greater part of the ballad aside from toward the end. The entire ballad is just a single stanza long, and each line in the stanza includes eight syllables. In My Last Duchess, the Duke takes a gander at the artistic creation of his last duchess and trails off to the past. He talks about the admirers of the Duchess excellence and the coy responses of the Duchess of them. At that point, he talks about how he closes this by executing the Duchess. In My Last Duchess, the speaker is passed on as being controlling, pompous, malevolent, and whimsical. The Duke hints at desire and over assurance towards his first spouse. Then again, the storyteller in Porphyria s Lover is depicted as who has put some distance between realities, somebody obviously crazy. There a couple of clues that this character might be desolate and pulled back. After Porphyria goes into the room he is in, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Summary Of Betty Friedan s The Feminine Mystique The 1960s were a time of change for many Americans, whether it be dealing with the women s liberation movement, civil rights, or the anti war movement. During this period, many issues that had laid beneath the surface were brought out, it was a time for change. The second wave of feminism was established in the sixties, beginning when many women addressed the topics that angered them in the world, specifically pertaining to their own rights. The sixties brought up many feelings, feelings that had been buried or held back for some time, Betty Friedanhas been one of those many people to address her feelings and put it out in the world. Friedan wrote a book named The Feminine Mystique, which has become an international bestseller and has sold over one million copies since its release in 1963(citation, from opening of book). Her book focused on the societal expectations that kept women in the home for many years. Friedan captured the anger and frustration many women felt, and offered ways for women to recapture their lives back. Betty Friedan s book, The Feminine Mystique, launched a conversation about women s roles in society, which started the second wave of feminismwhere society began to see women as self reliant, and capable to do the tasks men had been doing as long as time. Friedan s article The Problem that Has No Name grabbed the attention of any women who would listen, she called attention to the standards that were supposed to make women feel content and ... • 5. The Modern Age Of Islam The Islamic world has tried to become strong again through both secularism and religion, with neither answer showing a complete, absolute advantage over the other. This is shown through Atta Turk completely removing Islam out of the newly formed Turkish society, the Baath Party s secular ideology while still committing massacre, and Hezbollah using a radicalized form of religionto gain political strength. The beginning of the modern age of Islam can be marked with Napoleon s conquest of Egypt and the subsequent conquest by Britain. This defeat indicated to the leaders of the Islamic world that not only were they defeated by a Western power, but also by an inferior Western power. Thus, leaders of the Islamic world, such as Muhammad Ali and al Afghani said that to create a successful society, we must emulate the West to become strong. This ideology held largely throughout the Islamic world until the creation of Israel. When Israel fought and destroyed Arab nations in the Six Days War, secular governments were no longer as widely accepted, leading to the creation of Islamic states and the further progression of Islamic Fundamentalism. Islamic Fundamentalism uses radicalized Islam, which can usually be traced directly back to Wahhabism, to try and gain power and political influence over the region through terror. This clearly corrupted thought clashes with the secular, although also in many cases corrupted, powers of the world. These opposing viewpoints show that there is no ... Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange Linguistic Differences in the Film and Novel A Clockwork Orange, written by Anthony Burgess, is experienced differently as a novel than it is as the movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. The heart of the difference between the two forms is expressed by Bakhtin: The potential for [ double voiced discourse between the author and narrator] is one of the most fundamental privileges of novelistic prose, a privilege available neither to dramatic nor to purely poetic genres (Bakhtin, 320).1 An entire dimension of the novel s story is lost in the movie when Alex s role is reduced from narrator to commentator. Two different things are happening when Alex says, you may, O my brothers, have forgotten what these mestos were like, things changing so skorry these days and everybody very quick to forget, newspapers not being read much neither (Burgess 1). On one level, Alex says these words to comment on the way society is going. He presupposes his audience has a basic familiarity with his world. He reminds his audience what sort of mestos the milk bars were, but does not need to explain what a mesto is. On another level, Burgess uses this moment to give the reader some indication of the setting. Through this commentary of Alex s, the reader s subconscious mind is able to pick up on the fact that time has passed for Alex since the events of the story took place. This difference in time between action and narration is resolved with the controversial twenty first chapter, where Alex looks back at his younger days and the way he spent his time, and feels bored with it. At the same time, the reader detects some trace of an unstable social and political situation around Alex. The audience Alex is addressing with the familiar O my brothers is different from the audience which Burgess is addressing the readers of his novel. • 11. Similarities Between V For Vendetta And 1984 Overcome, Perish, 1984 and V for Vendetta Alan Moore and George Orwell s stylistic writing choices and parallels between fascist governments and the methods used to oppose them in their pieces V for Vendetta and 1984 with the use of rhymes and television to represent a biased sense of view and salvation left in history, and how the Party uses their own symbols to repress that salvation. 1984 and V for Vendetta both take place in a Great Britain controlled by a totalitarianistic society with non conformist characters who take on that society with a unique approach. Winston Smith uses a private rebellion between himself and Julia as his nonconformity against the Inner Party. In V for Vendetta, however, V s take on resisting the NorsefireParty is very direct and outspoken to the public. In their own ways, they both hide their hatred for the Party. Winston himself keeps his meetings with Julia hush hush in Mr. Charrington s room, while V s identity is never revealed, always wearing a mask. Symbols play a key role in establishing the stories of Winston and V. 1984 s chant for the Brotherhood is the Oranges and Lemons English nursery rhyme refers to the bells of churches in London that extends on by people who matter to Winston; and everyone who betrays him. Mr. Charrington gives him the first piece, but is revealed to be a part of the Thought Police, Julia, who betrays him at the end of it all before her mental death, and O Brian, who instead of his savior becomes his torturer. The Fifth of November is also a rhyme that s based off real events, referencing Guy Fawkes s failed plan to blow up the English Parliament on November 5th, 1605. Both rhymes are tied into Great Britain and a passion that varies between the protagonists, providing them with their only link to the past. Television is also a main symbol for the government s control both the telescreens in 1984 and the telly in V for Vendetta broadcast only the Party s views and bias. • 12. Theme Of Nature In Victor Frankenstein Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven, (mathew 19:14). This sentiment can be applied to many aspects in Mary Shelley s gothic novel Frankenstein; From Victor frankenstein s idolatry by his parents to Victor s own dereliction of his creation even stretching to victor s foil Robert Walton whose feeling of isolation has familial ties attached to it. Shelley explores the multiple thematic subjects of nurture V.S. nature, responsibility, and negligence thus perpetuating the thought that man is a direct product if his environment. The way Robert Walton was raised contributes to his longing for fulfillment and his want to be more than he is. Robert longs to be accepted and he fills this voyage will do just that. I shall satiate my ardent curiosity...and may tread a land never before imprinted by the foot of man, (Shelley 2).Robert feels this voyage will validate him. Shelley herself subtly indicts Victor s parents in exactly this way; and [shelley] suggests an even subtler subtext of family conflict in the letters Walton writes to Margaret, (Claridge). Robert wants this voyage to give him the recognition he lacks. It can be argued this is due to a lack of acceptance by his Father. these volumes were my study day and night...my father s dying injunction had forbidden my uncle to allow me to embark in a seafaring life, (Shelley 2). Using Multiple Regression Project For New Stores Multiple Regression Project Jay Ma MGSC6200, 50839 Facilitator: Ike Papadopoulos 05JUL2015 Introduction Pam and Susan s is a discount department store that currently has 250 chain stores located throughout the South. To sustain its recent continuous expansion into the Border States and Southwest, identification of the sites for new stores has become an essential factor of its increasing strategic planning. The current store decisions are based on the traditional process of estimating sales potential with demographic analyses, site visits and studies by the company s real estate department. A subjective approach was developed to classify the potential sites to the competitive type of the trading zone. However, there are ongoing concerns regarding the subjectivity of the competitive type classifications, and whether this method can predict sales potentials at new sites. The goal of this project is to build a multiple regression model based on the census data obtained from stores trading zones and individual stores, to effectively predict sales potentials at new sites. Data The gathered data contains demographics and economics of the trading zones, and size, composition and sales of the store. There is a total of 13 major categories of variables including population (%black, % Spanish speaking), total population , family income (in $1,000s: 0 10, 10 14, 14 20, 20 30, 30 50, 50 100, 100), average family size, median yearly income, median rent per month, median home ... • 14. Art Vs. Art Education Art is defined as the expression or application of humans creative skills and imagination. Art is found in almost everywhere in our day to day lives. Without peoples imagination and creative skills we wouldn t have buildings, technology and entertainment. Creativity is a important subject in society, yet the subject being taught in schools is on a decline. How can we live in such an advancing society when our future generations are not learning how to use their imagination or how to apply their creative skills? Although people argue that more class time needs to be put towards math and science classes, art classes need to increase in our schools. Art has many benefits on the brain and Students who have access to artsin or out of school tend to have better academic results, better workforce opportunities, and more civic engagement (National Endowment for the Arts). Art educationneeds to improve because it is a helpful stress reliever, important for childhood development and helps students succeed in school and life. Many people underestimate the benefits of art on the brain. Art not only is a great stress reliever, but it is also a tool used to clear your head and help tackle issues causing stress. • 15. Creativism a Constant Company of Humans Throughout History As Carl Gustav Jung wisely stated, there is a certain fascination with regard to creativity. Creativity expresses itself in many different forms, shapes, sizes, colours and sounds. It is a concept difficult to grasp as it is broad. However most people would think of themselves as being able to judge who and what is actually creative. But what exactly is creativity? Amible (1983) defines creativity as the production of ideas, insights and also products that are both, original and adaptive. Originality in this context refers to novelty of an idea and adaptation to the appropriateness. This is the definition predominantly used in creativity research (Sternberg Lubart 1999; Simonton Damian,2013) and is therefore used in this paper as well. In historical terms, creativity was a constant accompanist of human kind. We had to change the environment, and invent tools according to our needs in order to survive. Thus, creativity is a universal occurrence in all cultures (Simonton Ting, 2010). However, which idea is assumed to be original and appropriate, so considered to be creative, depends strongly on context and time (Njistad et al., 2010). As stated by Nijstad et al. (2010) the work of Vincent van Gough is a good example of a different perception of creativity in different times. When Van Gough died he was a poor man but his works are sold for millions today. Similar is the example of the French post impressionist artist Paul Gauguin who was not well appreciated until ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a story about a girl who lives with her step mother and her 2 step sisters, she is not treated with respect, more like a servant. It suggests when determining a woman s worth, it is based on their physical appearance, not on other aspects of them, such as personalities or beliefs. These ideas are clearly evident in sections of the film when Cinderellais determined as ugly because of her original rag like clothing, this idea changes when she is dressed in her ball gown, because of this the prince falls in love with her. • 18. Synthesis Essay On Gold Once the gold ore is no longer able to be mined economically, all of the salvageable equipment is removed and the reclamation process begins. The goal of reclamation is to return the mine site to its pre mining state while minimizing erosion, and protecting the public and surrounding wildlife. Portals that lead to the underground workings are sealed, but should have ports to monitor if there is a buildup of toxic gases or water. Reclaiming the surface area where the mine office, bathhouse, and processing facilities were located starts with demolition of the buildings and removal of equipment and materials. A special requirement for reclaiming gold processing plants is to rinse and neutralize any residual leaching solution from the solution... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paper money in the United States and other countries used to be backed by gold which became known as the gold standard . This meant that a person could trade paper money for its equivalent value in gold bars. Eventually it became too difficult to maintain this standard so it is not currently used by any country. One of the most well known uses for gold is in jewelry which makes up about 78 percent of gold consumption. Gold is desirable for jewelry manufacturers because of its luster, resistance to tarnish, and ability to be shaped easily. However, pure (24 karat) gold is too soft to withstand the stress put on most jewelry, so it is often made into an alloy with silver or copper to make it harder. Another use of gold is in electronics and computers due to its high conductivity. Connectors, soldered joints, and connecting strips have low voltages running through them that are easily interrupted by corrosion, which is why gold s resistance to tarnish makes it perfect for these applications. In the medical industry, gold alloys are used for crowns, fillings, and other orthodontic appliances because it is chemically inert and non allergenic. Also, radioactive gold isotopes can serve as a radiation source when treating certain cancers. Interestingly, small amounts of gold can be injected into the eyelids of a person that suffers from lagophthalmos, which is the inability to completely close their eyes (King, ... The purpose of spending a day without technology is to detoxify ourselves from the continuous barrage of information. Just as Mark Bittman mentions in his article, I felt connected to myself rather than my computer. I had time to think, and distance from normal demands. (4) We are so accustomed to rely on technologythat we seem to forget what would become of us without it. Internet, radio, television, cell phones, video games and other technological amenities are part of our daily life, in a way that sometimes we can not see reality outside a screen. We have shelved conversations face to face, the pleasure of enjoying the birds sing or simply appreciate nature around us. Professor David Levy declares, Living a good life requires a kind of balance, a bit of quiet. There are questions about the limits of the brain and the body, and there are parallels here to the environmental movement. (2) Talking about the environment, not only helps us to live without the use of technology for one day but it helps the environment as well. A great way to save money and take care of the environment is to decide to give up the technology just for one day. We need to take care of our soulor inner self or however we want to call it, not for vanity but sanity. • 21. Michaelangelo, Raphael And Michelangelo s Creation Of God The Bible, the bestselling book of all time, has made an impact on our society like nothing else. Many of our ideas and thoughts are either directly or indirectly based on ideas from the Bible but while the Bible s influence is prominent in society, has it always been for the best? Our views on women are one of the many things that have been affected due to the Bible, a lot of times negatively. Women throughout the Bible have been described as either being lesser than men or as the source of evil in this world. The most obvious instance of this being shown is through the figure of Eve. More times than not, Eve is blamed for the banishment of mankind from the garden of Eden as she gave a fruit from the tree of knowledge to Adam and they both consumed it. Due to this, many people see her as being the devil in disguise and often, many artists choose to depict like that. While many artists choose to depict Eve as evil, some choose to depict Eve in another way. Michelangeloand Raffaello Sanzio, known also as Raphael, were two of these types of artists who challenged the existing ideas of Eve through their art. Both artists were heavily influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, called the treatise of psychology , who may have taught them to pay close attention the effect the emotions and actions had on the people in their art, which can be seen throughout the following paintings. Through Michelangelo s Creation of Adam and Fall and Expulsion from the garden of Eden on the ceiling of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. The Importance Of Student Apathy In School Student apathy creates a detrimental toll on a student s mindset. An apathetic student fails to have production in the classroom. These students would rather fail instead of trying to keep up with their schoolwork. Failing is easier than running the rick of being seen as average or below average. (De Lay, Swan 106). Student apathy fails to create an engaging culture in a school district. Since students feel the affects of student apathy, they often perceive themselves as unsuccessful (De Lay, Swan 112). In a school majorly affected by student apathy, students associate school with the purpose of passing grades. Educationmust hold a purpose and seen as an importance to students. Engagement and achievement in the classroom does not matter when they have passing grades (Christman 3). When students receive their degree, they do not care how hard they worked to get it. A degree can lead to a job, and that is what matters in the real world. Students have a professional goal in mind whether it is a job or college. Classes that do not relate to the real world do not matter to a majority of these students. Engagement exhibits itself in classrooms, which helps students in everyday life (De Lay, Swan). Apathy presents itself in more than high schoolstudents. Senioritis was once the only major apathetic problem in schools. Student apathy has crept its way into middle and elementary grade levels. As students reach the end of their public school education, they often slack off in their schoolwork, which is known as senioritis. With little pressure on the seniors, they take the year off by producing as little amount of work as possible. Students affected by senioritis are not prepared for college or the real world. Their reading and writing skills deteriorate when they are not learning in their senior year The students who go to college after this stay in school for longer than the usual four years (Puente 1). As student apathy displays across all grade levels, it becomes a major problem. Relationships between students and teachers as well as the teaching methods used highly affects the lower grade levels. Students bored in the classroom often check out and fail to stay engaged in their class (De Lay, Swan 111). Little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. A Mathematical Model Of Mechanical Seals LITERATURE REVIEW 1.Etsion and Burstein[12] developed a mathematical model to allow performance prediction of all non contacting mechanical seals having a regular micro surface structure in the form of hemispherical pores. Seal performance such as equilibrium face separation, friction torque and leakage across the seal are calculated for a range of seal pressures, pore sizes and pore ratio of the ring surface area. An optimum pore size was found that depends on other variables and corresponds to maximum axial stiffness and minimum friction torque. 2.Wang and Kato[13] presented their work on texturing Silicon Carbide (SiC) seals operating in water for better performance. In this work, the stationary surface of the seal is textured using a Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) process. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of micro pits on the critical seizure load. The authors found that surface texturing is an effective way to stabilize friction, reduce friction coefficient and to expand the low friction range of SiC seals working in water. 3.Siripuram[14] presents a numerical study of the effects of different shapes of micro asperities in sliding surface lubrication when hydrodynamic films are found. Positive and negative asperities of constant height (depth) are considered with circular, square, diamond, hexagonal and triangular cross sections. The Possible Contribution of Succession Planning on Organizational Performance Introduction Succession planning, which is often also referred to as knowledge management, is one of the ways in which information is kept within an organization even though the people who work within that organization come and go. Those who make policies in business, and those who make policies that assist other businesses, have started encouraging businesses in recent years to learn to help themselves through succession planning and the management and transfer of knowledge, specifically between people who are leaving the organization and people who are just entering that organization (Dyck, Mauws, Starke, Mischke, 2002). One of the reasons for this encouragement is due to the fact that an adjustment of roles through the transferring of knowledge is an important way to help any business move through a change of ownership or simply a shift when a long time employee leaves the company. Ownership is often not the issue, but management and other developed skills are very significant when a person is trying to ensure that another person clearly understands the job which he is taking over and will be performing in the future (Dyck, Mauws, Starke, Mischke, 2002). Many businesses do not have any serious plans as they relate to succession, and that can be detrimental to the entire organization. The humans that were successful foragers were the first to find sweet fruit to sustain them and the ones to survive. • 28. Metaphors In American Childhood We could have ran through every backyard in North America until we got to Panama (Dillard 48). This is just one of Dillard s many metaphors throughout the novel that portrays a deep awareness of space and time. Through metaphors Dillard captures a true depth in the novel that regular sentences can not obtain. Normal sentences might pull a reader in, however metaphors can truly captivate the reader to imagine all new possibilities. Dillard shows through metaphors of sight, time, and understandingthat as you grow older your awareness of time and spacedeepens in understanding. Sight is one of the few senses that a young child is able to use freely. A young child can have an outlook that looks completely different than what an adult has. In An American Childhood, Dillard explores her Pittsburgh and sees many things including, which she describes as, a black phalanx (34). This metaphor is explicit because a phalanx is meant for a mass of people, not a few nuns that are walking down the street. Phalanx describes these nuns well because it is a word Dillard attributes to something she sees as unknown and mystifying. The mystifying nuns represent one of the first real things that Dillard sees in Pittsburgh that frightens her. Dillard uses this metaphor as a sign of fear when amongst the nuns, but the reader can see through her word choice that the awareness she has of the world is pretty open. Dillard is able to see nuns in her travels and think deeply about her thoughts. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Multiple Characters In Anna Karenina By Lev Tolstoy In Anna Karenina, Lev Tolstoy describes multiple characters in depth and gives the readers the opportunity to create and change their opinions about most of them as the plot develops. The novel begins with a rather striking quote, taken from Romans 12:19: Vengeance is mine, I will repay (Tolstoy XXV). This sentence s meaning in it s biblical context and full length, is that it is not up to people to punish others for their wrong doings, but that God will eventually take revenge and repay them, for it is his right and duty to do so. Focusing on the meaning of this excerpt, I believe that it is connected to the outcomes of Anna and Vronsky s affair, but also to that of the life of Dolly Oblonskaya and her husband, as well as other characters . In this paper I will support my interpretation of the reasons why I believe that despite the fact that Anna Karenina appears to suffer the consequences of her loveaffair with Alexei Vronsky because she is a woman more than her brother Stepan Oblonsky, the faith that the author assigns to her with allusions since the beginning of the book, is connected to the fact that cheating is fundamentally wrong according to Tolstoy s perspective, and that her punishment is a consequence of the above mentioned quotation. To sustain my understanding of this theme I will make a comparison between Anna and some of the other main characters who are involved in a romantic relationship or, as in Dolly s case, stuck in an unhappy marriage. Approximately half of people with unipolar depression recover within six weeks and 90% recover within a year, some without treatment (Kessler, 2002; Kendler et al., 1997). There are numerous EHR programs that are being developed and/or constantly undergoing improvements. Lastly, health care facilities that use IT to improve their capabilities for service innovation and service quality have the potential to enhance their organizations strategic and operational performance (Thambusamy Palvia, 2011, p. 17). However, when Jeannie s breathing rate compared to the average, it showed that Jeannie had a higher breathing rate, which showed that the hypothesis was not completely wrong. There were a bucket of factors that might be at play, for instance current health condition, medical history, smoking habits, connections with second hand smokes, frequency of exercise, and living environment, etc. all these were the factors contribute to a person s vital capacity. America was a democratic, capitalist nation, and the Soviet Unionwas communist which meant that they were on opposing sides of the spectrum. This was welcomed by Castro, who played on Cuban s fears, that America would try an invasion. America had, in 1961, attempted to start an anti revolution against Castro in what became known as the Bay of Pigs incident, so called because Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs with American help to begin their campaign to oust Castro. The Bay of Pigs failed badly, humiliating newly appointed President Kennedy. Kennedy was determined not to allow the Cuban Missile Crisis to tarnish his name any further. How he responded to the threat would affect more than his political career, the fate of the world rested on his shoulders, as a nuclear war would have disastrous consequences. Despite the popular Western attitudes towards the Soviets, Khrushchev was actually a very reasonable man, and neither he nor President Kennedy wanted a nuclear war. However, neither man could be seen to back down because it would be seen as weakness, which would be exploited by the other side. However it seemed like there was no way for both men to be satisfied in this situation. On 22nd October 1962 Kennedy ordered a blockade of Cuba to stop more missiles reaching the island. Soviet ships continued on their course regardless, only turning round once they had reached the blockade. One ship, however, passed by the blockade headed straight to Cuba. The key events ... Western cultures portrayal of alcoholism, especially among indigenous communities, is a legacy of North America s colonialist history. Various untruths about alcoholism have remained pervasive and though it does indeed remain a problem in many indigenous communities the attempts to explain its pervasiveness have allowed racist sentiments to take root. • 51. The Environmental Issue Of Water Conservation Water is essential for humanity s survival, and even though the world is largely covered by water, only a small percentage is potable for human utilization. Approximately, on average, 120,000 gallons of water is used annually for a single family household (Galbraith). This alarming number could be reduced dramatically for the efforts of water conservation and lowering water bill prices for families could subsequently save money that could be used for other expenses. Thus, conserving water would prove beneficial and advantageous to not just in Texas, but to everyone else as well. Although environmental policies have not been as popular with Congress and the state legislature, it is still an important issue to consider since there are only a limited amount of resources for public use, such as water. Both the federal and state governments have enacted policies towards the efforts of water conservation that mainly affect cities and corporations and considered how it affects other organisms in the environment. One current environmental issue between the U.S. federal and state governments is concerning about the efforts of water conservation and other natural resources by passing several laws that mainly affect both cities and companies that somewhat relate to preserving wildlife as well for the ecosystem. The reasons initiating these legal changes are to conserve clean water for human consumption and to preserve wildlife as well. Congress passed the Water PollutionControl Act ... • 52. The Pros And Cons Of Cannibalism As a human being, convincing a cannibal chieftain that I am not going to taste good for their dinner, is actually a complicated situation to consider. Cannibalism is surprisingly not against the United States law. It is misperceived that cannibalism is illegal. In reality, the reason why cannibalism is seen as revolting is because of the thought of a person eating the flesh of another person. Cannibalism is seen by people just like haggis and liver is seen as revolting to most people. When it comes to ethics, there are different components that would claim the cannibal eating me is morally unacceptable. This can be compared to killing another humanbeing for no reason. Both of these cases contain the same common thought that killing people no matter what the circumstance is morally incorrect. The majority of society believes that cannibalism and homicide are both incorrect. This thought comes from three views. The three views that can be used to describe if an action is morally correct are, the natural law theory, relativism, and moral objectivism. These three views are looked at individually and not used together. The natural law of theory deals with reasoning deduced from the nature of humanity throughout society. Relativism deals with reasoning that is deduced within a certain culture. Moral objectivism deals with reasoning deduced from universal morality. Cannibalism is not always seen as incorrect in all societies. Some societies see cannibalism as a valid activity. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the more straight forward and raw legal documents that we read for class, called the capitularies, were helpful in illustrating this fact. The capitularies were written throughout the late 700s and early in 800s and many of the problems addressed/rules made had to do with bishops and churches. The capitularies hold many rules that can be seen as rules that the churches should have been able to control themselves, which could be why they fought for more power later on. One examples of these rules is the capitulary number five of the Paderborn capitularies that says, If anyone kills a bishop or a priest or a deacon, he shall likewise pay with his life, (Loyn, 300). This rule definitely seems like something that the churches should have control of themselves, but alas rules like this were put into the hands of the king/lords of this time.
