Jonathan Edwards And Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry
God
In the 1600 s the Puritans were the main religious group of that time period and they
had very strong ideals on how religion and government should go together. Jonathan
Edwards, who shared many of their ideals, preached a sermon called, Sinners in the
Hands of an Angry God and it had a very big impact on the congregation. Nathaniel
Hawthorne, although he was a writer in the 1800 s, he was fascinated with the
Puritans and their lifestyles and wrote a short story called, The Minister s Black Veil.
Both authors use specific details, tone, and imagery to convey their meaning and style
, Edwards harsh and accusatory style was more effective than Hawthorne s
melancholy and mysterious style because Edwards helps the reader understand the
effects sincan have in one s life.
Throughout Sinners Edwards uses specific details to show God s anger towards
those who have sinned. In paragraph five of Sinners he says, dreadful pit of the
glowing flames of the wrath of God. Edwards uses strong diction here to give the
congregation an idea of how angry God is with all who have sinned. Along those
same lines, Hawthorne also uses strong diction in his details, for example pale faced
congregation on page three of MBV. He uses this detail to be sure the reader knows
the effect the veil has on the townspeople and how they were frightened by his veil.
Edwards detail on the contrary was more effective because he frightened the audience
whereas Hawthorne is very dull in the moment throughout the story.
In the same way Edwards surpasses Hawthorne again in effecting the audience more
in imagery. Edwards uses frightening imagery to give the congregation and image in
their minds to scare them into repenting. In paragraph four of Sinners he declares,
the devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash
about them... this traumatises the audience because in their minds they see hell with
the devil waiting to devour them. This persuades them to repent and change their
ways because they do not want to burn in hell. Hawthorne on the other hand takes a
different approach in imagery. Whereas Edwards does it to help his persuasion
Hawthorne does it to help the reader get a better idea of the moral.

I read the article by Schlegel and at first the women seemed very inferior to the men.

This is besides the fact that it is generally overlooked in many of Plato s writings
even though it lays the foundations to many other theories of his. The Republic is

in Parmenides and Timaeus thereafter. (These works will be further discussed later

The realm of ideas and abstract thought is in fact the ideal representation of reality.

produced in 431 BC. It was during this time that Corinth and Athens were rivals,

Athens during the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC. Like most literature, Euripides
Medea incorporates the period in which it was written along with a timeless theme.
Euripdes uses the literary devices of setting, irony, and symbolism to depict the theme
of identity in relation to marriage.
The play Medea uses the setting to help the audience better understand the meaning
of the text. What is said depends greatly on who is around and where the
character(s) are. For example, when Medea is by herself or with the chorus, she is
speaking freely of her evil plans, however, when she was in the presences of Creon
or Jason, she lied to their faces. The audience knows what her true thoughts and
feelings are due to the setting. They are not tricked into thinking she has changed
her mind but instead, they know when she is lying based on who she is around.

Mrs. Dalton s discovery of Bigger is a serious threat to his life, which causes him to
frantically search for safety. He turned and a hysterical terror seized him, as though

danger, with no possibility for escape. In his last, desperate fight for survival, he

The second rat enters the novel to remind readers that the desperate situation of the
first rat is the same situation Bigger faces now. Bigger fears for his life as he is
trapped in the city with no escape after Mary s bones are discovered. His wild
movement through the city streets is similar to the first rat running in a circle,
desperately searching for a place to hide. He reeled through the streets, his
bloodshot eyes looking for a place to hide. He paused at a corner and saw a big
black rat leaping over the snow. It shot past him into a doorway where it slid out of
sight through a hole. He looked wistfully at that gaping black hole through which the
rat had darted to safety (Wright 288). The second rat runs across the white snow the
way Bigger is running through the white controlled city, both looking for safety. This

All towns, cities, and areas have their own specific traits. Small towns tend to be
more like a family, while big cities tend to be more passive. Then there are the
small areas where people do not make much money and struggle to get by. These
areas tend to be more violent and more influenced by drugs and alcohol. This is the
area that Andre Dubus III grew up in, in his memoir Townie. His parents were
divorced and neither of them made much money so he and his two sisters and
brother ended up moving from one small crummy neighborhood to another. In these

There was on man that was constantly attacking Andre when he was young. This
neighborhood thug named Clay had decided that he was going to target Andre and
beat him every time that he spotted him. Eventually Andre became so sick of this
and didn t have a clue what to do so he called his father. After that his father was
able to talk to Clay s father and have Clay leave Andre alone. After that negotiation
Clay and his mother came running out of their house screaming. This and the fact
that Clay hired a friend to try and beat Andre instead of himself showed Andre that
the only way to settle anything in this environment was to use a fist. Eventually

I learn to survive while stay there. Life in the forest are parallel with the nature.
After school, gather firewood, carry water and find food are one routine that I had
