Glory, By Edward Zwick
Glory directed by Edward Zwick is about the Civil War journey of the first colored regiment under the
control of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw played by Matthew Broderick. The movie takes place in 1862,
after the Battle Of Antietam. Colonel Shaw is offered a position as commander of the first African
American regiment including Private Trip (Denzel Washington) and Sergeant Major John Rawlins
(Morgan Freeman) by the governor of Massachusetts. When Col. Shaw decides to command the
regiment, he was unsure of what the 54th Massachusetts Regiment could accomplish. Throughout the
course of the movie, he was not confident in the newly formed regiment. But as the movie progresses,
he begins to change his perspective on the regiment. Early in the movie, ... Show more content on

Shaw completely changes his attitude towards the 54th Massachusetts regiment. He does not loosen
the reigns, instead he takes Sgt. Mulcahy s suggestion and trains them harshly. The next training
session was mainly focused on aiming and shooting guns quickly. Robert decides to watch them
practice shooting guns, but when they take their time to load their guns, he gets upset. He chooses
Private Jupiter Sharts to specifically watch. Pvt. Sharts states that he hunted squirrels so his aim is up
to par. Col. Shaw states that, a good man can fire three aimed shots in a minute so when, Pvt. Sharts
cannot deliver quick load and unload of his rifle within the minute, Col. Shaw yells at him and shoots
a gun in the air to show how fast he should be able to shoot. After getting flustered by the pressure of
Col. Shaw, Pvt. Sharts drops the gun. Col. Shaw was also harsh on Private Trip. When Pvt. Trip
disappears and is re discovered, he is sentenced to a flogging punishment. Major Cabot Forbes, a close
friend of Col. Shaw, tries to convince Robert to change his mind about the flogging, because it would
make them no better than their past slaveowners. Colonel Robert Shaw ignores Maj. Forbes comment
because he realizes he needs to be tough on the regiment in order to prepare them for war. He tells
Sergeant Mulcahy to proceed with the flogging. But after the punishment, he soon realizes that Private
Trip disappeared to go find shoes due to his previous worn out pair

Wislawa Szymborska
Listening to my own sensual voice, I seemed to convey a very strong knowledge of the poem, Hunger
Camp at Jaslo by Wislawa Szymborska. I extracted the meaning of the poem and supported my
assumption strongly with examples of literary technique throughout the poem. I scored myself in
Criterion A, knowledge and understanding of the poem, with a 5. In terms of Criterion B, appreciation
of the writer s choices, I brought forth a wide range of literary device examples ranging from
alliteration and repetition, to metaphor and diction. I awarded myself with a score of 4 in this category
as although my examples were plentiful and supportable there was certainly more room for analysis.
In Criterion C, organization and presentation of the commentary, I believe I left the most room for
improvement while although I structured my arguments well and delivered a clear and concise

In Criterion D, knowledge and understanding of the work used in the discussion, I felt I conveyed
excellent knowledge of Art Spiegelman s Maus, I cited the unique symbols and used specific
examples of both major and minor characters to explain how symbols connected to the overall theme
of the graphic novel. Consequentially, I awarded myself with a score of 5 in this category. For
Criterion E, response to the discussion questions, I felt that the questions themselves could have been
stronger and the limited time may have given me some issues in terms of response strength, as a result
I had a brief response that although strong, was certainly too brief. I awarded myself with a score of 4
in this category. In the last, and perhaps most academically relevant category Criterion F, language, I
used very concise and academic diction as well as a varying sentence structure and tone when
appropriate. I think this one of my stronger categories, as a result I awarded myself with a score of

Stadium And Arena Funding Case Study
Introduction and Case Study Participant:
The purpose of this research is to better understand how people think about sports organizations and
paying for their own stadiums or arenas or should the public foot the majority of the bill for the
stadium or arena through tax dollars. Also, to help organizations understand how to get proper funding
for new stadiums that could possibly be available. This is why more sports clubs choose a form of
commercial company as the tax treatment for the business. There are different aspects and opinions
that the public has when it comes to paying for stadiums through tax dollars and owners paying for
their own stadiums. The databases that were used for this research are: the Texas A M University

There are many things that need to be taken in accounted for when it comes to Stadium and Arena
Funding. The biggest thing first would be what type of stadium or arena you are trying to fund. I
personally think that the tax payers should pay for half and the sports organizations should pay the
other half. The tax payers should help with some of the funding but also some of the responsible
should be put on the organizations to fund the other half needed. According to research, the public is
more likely to pay a tax on things like: broad based taxes and special taxes. Special taxes are very
important when it comes to funding. When it comes to professional sports, it is a little different than
school sports for example, like a high school. In most high schools, the funding comes from a property
tax increase and also a government bond. The community is more likely to increase the property taxes
for a high school if the community is on board with the funding. Most high schools have some type of
alumni donations that can go to help the school in any way that is needed. Keeping all this in mind,
some school districts the public may vote against the property tax increase. Most high schools might
have a wealthier district than others, which could cause a vote against the increase. There are many
different things that can be taxed to help with stadium funding. Professional sports are more likely to
get public support for a new stadium. Professional sports usually have a big fan base and serves a form
of entertainment for fans. Professional teams also say they will leave and go to another city, which in
turn increases funds to keep that certain team in that city. The communities in these cases do not want
the team to go to another community and be successful. Most communities are not against funding for
stadiums but it depends on how the teams go about it that is the most

Similes In The Hanging, By George Orwell
The hanging is a short story written by George Orwell is in essence an anti capital punishment piece
written to persuade the reader that capital punishment s an unjust crime against humanity, and just as
bad as whatever crime the criminal has committed. George Orwell throughout the literary piece makes
use of similes, contrasts, and irony in order to persuade the reader of Orwell s viewpoint.
Furthermore, throughout the short story in its entirety we see the constant use of similes in an effort to
help the reader visualize the scene at hand. For instance, during the start of the story we see Orwell
equate the jail cell to, small animal cages ; Orwell does this to help illustrate to the reader the truly
abominable circumstances that befell the prisoners of the facility. If Orwell were to simply state that
the conditions were atrocious it d be easier to distance ourselves from the conditions at hand, by using
this simile he has in effect made it nearly impossible for the reader to distance themselves, as the
imagery cascades into his thoughts through the simile. Moreover, as they grab onto the prisoner and
forcibly hold onto him to prevent any potential escape attempt, Orwell likens the situation to, Men
handling a fish which is still alive and may jump back into the water. Orwell does this with the
intention of painting the image of a small slippery man being handled by men who can t get a grip
upon him due to the rain and his stature. Furthermore, when the prisoner is crying out Ram, Ram,
Ram! Orwell says it s akin to the, Tolling of the bell. which s basically to say it was the sound of
death, as funeral homes toll the bell during a funeral service; ultimately, orwell uses these similes as a
way to paint a picture of what s going on in the reader s head. It brings a darker undertone to the story
and helps reinforce what Orwell sees as the dark, sadistic nature of capital punishment.
Moreover, Orwell uses contrasting ideas to further indulge the reader plunging deeper into the abyss
of gloom that Orwell is attempting to get the reader to stare into. Orwell illustrates this rather soundly
when the dog is brought into the equation, It came bounding among us with a loud volley of barks,

Essay on The Rise of European Secularism in the 19th Century
SP History 117 Final Exam One May 23, 2013 The Rise of European Secularism During the
Nineteenth Century Word Count: 2,152 In Europe, the long nineteenth century, (1789 1914) was a
tumultuous era of political, economic, and social revolution which created an increasingly secular
culture. Europeans of all races and classes looked outside the church to solve societal and familial
issues. Gifted intellectuals proposed new philosophies on human thought and behavior, while
innovative communication allowed ideas to travel quicker and easier than ever before. By the early
1800 s, Europeans began to question the role and necessity of the church and religion in their lives.
Revolutionaries developed political and social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Enlightenment philosophers, like Voltaire, railed against organized theocracies and argued that
religion prevented rational inquiry while it endorsed repression, tyranny and war. The philosophy of
Immanuel Kant, who sought, liberation of the human mind from the dogmatic state of ignorance, had
a major impact on the future ideology of revolutionaries.4 It was Enlightenment ideas which
challenged people to question religious orthodoxy and use their own intelligence to draw conclusions
about the legitimacy of traditional authority. These philosophies were the foundation of modern,
egalitarian, democratic societies which would later replace Louis XVI s absolutist monarchy.
Enlightenment ideals had profound effects upon the politics of the early and mid nineteenth century.
However, a severe backlash against rationalism and liberal ideologies in France caused the return of
church state power; while conversely, in the state of Prussia, Enlightenment ideals inspired a
suppression of the church s power.5 Whether or not Enlightenment ideals and values were able to root
themselves permanently in society, the introduction and widespread acceptance of secular ideas
created major changes across Europe. After the Revolution in France, the old absolutist monarchy was
replaced by the Constitution of 1791, and King Louis XVI was forced to share power with an elected
legislative body in the new constitutional monarchy. In a rather

Conflict As A Communication Problem
Conflict is a disagreement between two or more parties who perceive that they have incompatible
concerns. An action by one party is perceived as preventing or interfering with the goals, needs, or
actions of another party leads to conflict. Conflicts can arise due to a variety of organisational
experiences, such as differences in the interpretation of facts, negative feelings, differences of values
and philosophies, or disputes over shared resources (Hunsaker and Alessandra, 2008). From a personal
experience, conflicts can also arise from the initiation or the execution of the process of change. In a
period of change, employees might feel threatened by the changes being made, thus leading to a
conflict with the management. In the process of managing a conflict, it is first critical to determine and
understand the cause of the conflict. Hunsaker and Alessander (2008), recognise the main sources of
conflict as communication problems, structural design, and personal differences. Whilst in a
managerial role, if I recognise the cause of conflict as a communication problem, I would take
measures to once again clearly communicate with the employees to negate any apprehensions they
might have. Also, I d take it up as an immediate requirement to enhance the communication channels
in the organisation, to avoid such issues in the future. On the other hand, conflicts due to structural
design and personal differences would need an in depth analysis. In modern day organisations,

Economic Growth. Economic Growth Is A Topic Constantly
Economic Growth Economic growth is a topic constantly discussed in Why Nations Fail by Daron
Acemoglu and James A. Robinson and Saving Capitalism by Robert B. Reich .The authors in both
books seem to believe that we live in a society in which economic growth is not at its finest, but there
is still hope. More detailed, Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson blame extractive institutions for
the slow growth because in this occasion the political and economic systems are structures in a way to
benefit the elite by extracting resources from the rest of the society . Similarly Robert B. Reich states
that those who control an increasing share of the wealth also have gained growing influence over the

More detailed countries such as Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone extractive institutions pave the way to
complete state failure, by destroy the laws and the most basic economic incentives. As a result of those
political and economic institutions economic stagnation is caused and in other more extreme occasions
civil wars, famines, displacements and epidemics may occur as well. However, Daron Acemoglu and
James A. Robinson also state that even extractive institutions can create economic growth. The writers
claim that even though the extractive institutions are using the wrong means to an end, they still
encourage as much growth as possible in order to have more to extract. This growth however, can be
achieved if these institutions have at least a minimal degree of political centralization. Also such event
can only last in the short run. Another aspect both books agree on is the fact that the only solution to
this huge problem of economic stagnation is the emergence of inclusive institutions. Robert B. Reich
claims that even though in the United States extractive institutions have the upper hand, there is still
hope. He states that This vicious cycle is neither inevitable nor irreversible . He believes that inclusive
institutions have equal opportunities to succeed, and if that happens the economy then will blossom.
He believes that

American Horror Story
American Horror Story is a television show created by the brilliant Ryan Murphy. The show has an

Season 3 of American Horror Story was labeled Coven. A season set in New Orleans involving two

are they saying all magic comes from Tituba in Salem? Europe has a history of magic, this doesn t

as well as the common Anglican Church criticisms and the English government and society. The

Gymnogyps California Condor Essay
The Gymnogyps californianus, also known as the California Condor is one of the largest flying birds
in the world. They have a wing span up to nine and a half feet and as a result, they can glide for long
distances without having to flap their wings for hours. Originally, these birds lived in different parts of
North America, but settlers often shot, poisoned, and captured these birds. Those that remained faced a
shortage of food supply until they could no longer survive in most areas. By 1900 s the remaining
birds were now limited to the mountainous regions of Southern California (wildlife.ca.gov). The
Federal law has protected the California condor as an endangered species since 1967 and a California
state law since 1971. It was around this time that only a few dozen now remained in the wild which
kicked off conservation campaigns. In efforts to save the remaining birds in the wild, they were
captured and taken to zoos. Today, due to captive breeding and successful reintroduction programs,
there are 106 mature wild birds, with 44 of them having bred successfully. This is a ... Show more

according to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, 9 of the 13 birds that had been released at the

realizing the birds had feasted on squirrel carcasses that had been shot by hunters using lead shots.

The Use Of Cyanide On The Reefs
The chance to recover these reefs is now. One example of it already being too late is in Hong Kong,
Singapore, Manila. All these locations had thriving beautiful reefs a long time ago, but human impact
has destroyed the infrastructure of the reefs and there is just a barren wasteland except for select hardy
fish that live off of what is left. When I say human impact, an example of this is the sale of coral
skeletons. The residents of China and surrounding areas would go out into the reef with dynamite. The
fisher man would take the dynamite and wedge it into the reef and light the fuse. The reef would be
blown into manageable pieces and then taken to the port to be dipped in bleach and put on the market
as decoration. Another practice that is used is the use of cyanide on the reefs. This practice is still used
today in order to supply the aquarium market with exotic fish that are too hard to catch. How the
practice works is the fisherman will take a diluted solution of cyanide and dose the whole reef. If this
is done correctly, the fish will not die, but become temporarily paralyzed so they can be picked up in a
net and brought onto the boat. The fish will then be transferred to store and be put on sale in a
crowded tank until someone takes them home. The larger fish are never targeted for aquarium homes
due to the size and lack of demand. When you have an ecosystem as complicated as a reef, taking out
chunks of the food chain will only have very negative impacts. The reefs

Assistive technology in the digital age goes beyond eyeglasses, canes and wheelchairs. The more high
tech kind includes newer technologies that made a particularly dramatic impact on education.
The following are good examples of AT designed for a specific set of individuals:
For people with physical disabilities, there are alternative keyboards and electronic mobility switches
For individuals with visual impairment, there are text to speech readers and computer screen enlargers
For those with hearing disabilities, there are signing avatars and electronic sign language dictionaries
For people with learning disabilities there are spell checkers and calculators
With the availability of this computer based ATs, overcoming barriers to educational access, progress
and participation is made easier.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL), on the other hand, is relatively new to education and learning.
This is why there s a lack of differentiation and clarity regarding its role in education, and how it
addresses individual differences and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because the resources are predominantly text based and the assessment requires lots of writing,
students with visual disabilities would struggle to complete the course. Looking at the situation on an
AT perspective, the problem can be considered an individual concern. But, on a UDL perspective, the
problem is perceived as relative to the environment. If the curriculum is delivered through digitally,
universally designed media, students will have access to a flexible curriculum. Digital text for students
with dyslexia. Digital videos or images, complete with descriptions and captions, for students with
language based disabilities and are

Essay on Wicca
Wicca/Witchcraft
Wicca is an Old English word that means The Wise Ones ; or Keepers of Knowledge ;. Wicca is one
of the most ancient followings. Wicca is a Neo Pagan following with many traditions that date to pre
Christian times. It is based on a deep respect for nature and the knowledge that we should not exploit
it for our own gain. Wicca is not recognized as a religion by anyone other than its followers. Wicca is
not a cult. Many Wiccans are independent and worship on their own or with a group of Wiccans, but
they do not follow any one person.
There are many types of Wicca, as many as 13 different traditions have been founded. One of the
oldest unchanged traditions is the Strega Witchcraft. A witch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Magick is defined as the process of causing change through focusing natural powers. Wiccans believe
in the principle of what you put into something you get out of it ;. This simply means that the bigger
the desired change, the more power a Wiccan must put into it. Wiccan magick is purely natural; there
is nothing supernatural about it. They use tools such as spells, chants, candles, amulets, and meditation
to perform this magick, but the magick doesn t come from the tools, it comes from within. Wiccans
also believe in reincarnation. They believe in the idea that their spirit is on an evolutionary journey
that takes many lifetimes to complete.
Wiccans are not Satan Worshippers. They do not communicate with the devil. The devil is a Christian
belief and is in no way connected to Wicca as is believed by many non Wiccans. Wiccans also do not
fly on broomsticks. They do have many rituals that involve broomsticks though. The broom is seen to
have very protective powers and therefore is used a lot in Wicca. A male witch is a witch, not a
Warlock. Warlock is a Celtic word that means traitor. It was used to describe the men who sought out
witches during the Middle Ages to be burned. Wiccans also do not use magick for their own personal
gain. They believe they have the power to, but they do not use it for personal gain as stated in the
Wiccan rede.

Society S Impact Pertaining To Juveniles And Death Penalty.
Society s Impact Pertaining to Juveniles and Death Penalty
The juvenile death penalty and in turn the death penalty are a much debated topic. Society has
conflicting views on the two topics, and these views have impacted the laws concerning the death
penalty and juvenile death penalty. Eventually, societal views have made changes to both issues over
time.
The Death Penalty
The death penalty is death as a punishment given by court of law for very serious crimes. It is also
referred to as capital punishment (Merriam Webster, Incorporated, 2017). In other words, if a person
commits a crime that their government, State and/or Federal, considers a capital offence then that
person is susceptible to receive a death sentence as punishment for ... Show more content on

Only one signer of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Rush, opposed the death penalty
(ProCon, 2013).
On April 30, 1790, the Congress established Federal Death Penalty, and then on June 25, 1790
Thomas Bird was the first federal execution (ProCon, 2013). Starting around 1833, public executions
were attacked as cruel. Many states enacted laws providing private hangings. Rhode Island (1833),
Pennsylvania (1834), New York (1835), Massachusetts (1835), and New Jersey (1835) all abolished
public hangings (ProCon, 2013).
In the 1880s Thomas Edison building electrical lighting systems in U.S. cities, and to demonstrate its
power he would electrocute animals. This led to people wanting to use electrocution as an execution

From 1967 to 1972 there was a voluntary moratorium (ban or halt) because public opinion turned
against the death penalty. Legal authorities were questioning whether executions were against the
Eighth Amendment for cruel and unusual punishment. Public support for the death penalty fell to its

Comparing The Theme Of Love In A Midsummer Night s Dream
To Be In Love With an Ass, Literally
Could you ever imagine yourself falling in love with an ass? No, not the jerkish guy down the street, a
literal ass. Can you imagine four days filled with declarations of love, hate, curses, cures, disgust, and
delight? An ultimatum so great it pits two people married for centuries against each other? Love is in
the air, and so is hate in Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream. Unfortunate circumstances fall
upon seven lovers in the woods one night, proving that love is more fickle than true.
Outside circumstances often play a role in love, but in the case of Titania and Bottom, an outside
circumstance brought them together completely. A flower hit by cupid s bow has the power to cause a

The King and Queen seemingly have been married forever, and most likely have been fighting for
forever as well. Oberon and Titania are fairies, meaning they help bring balance to nature, but they
have been neglecting their duties because of their argument. Titiana vents, And never, since the middle
summer s spring, Met we on hill, in dale, forest, or mead, By paved fountain or rush brook, or in the
beached margent of the sea (2.1.82). While they argue and avoid each other the nature they are
supposed to be taking care of is beginning to show the neglect, And, through this distemperature, we
see The season alter: hoary headed frosts Fall in the fresh lap of the crimson rose, and on old Heim s
thin and icy crown an odorous chaplet of sweet summer buds is, as in mockery, set (2.1.108). The
reason the King and Queen are fighting is rather strange, Oberon wants a mortal boy whom Titania
has taken as her ward. Oberon gives no reason as to why he wants the boy so bad, he probably just
wants him because Tatiana loves him so much. Titana befriended a mortal woman and spent hours
gossiping with her, laying on the sands by the shore, and when the mortal woman got pregnant and
died during childbirth, Titans made a promise to raise the child. Oberon was annoyed with Tatiana s
stubbornness and set out to make her pay by cursing her to fall in love with something humiliating,

Reviewing The Contractual Implications Of Coffee Importers...
I have been asked to advise Daily Grind Ltd regarding the contractual implications of their decision to
discontinue paying commission of 6.5% of the sale price of Moondollar products in New Zealand to
Fixit Ltd as per their contract, as a result of Messrs Waugh and Greene (the owners of Daily Grind
Ltd) restructuring their business. Messrs Waugh and Greene incorporated a new company Coffee
Importers Ltd to import and on sell Moondollar products in New Zealand. Of particular concern is
whether Coffee Importers Ltd is an associated entity of Daily Grind Ltd, and if so, is Daily Grind Ltd
or Coffee Importers Ltd liable to pay the commission. This opinion concludes that Coffee Importers
Ltd is an associated entity, and that Daily Grind Ltd is still liable to pay the commission. I Relevant
Facts Daily Grind Ltd entered into a contract with Fixit Ltd, which provided that Fixit Ltd would
assist and advocate for Daily Grind Ltd with the purpose of securing the master franchise for
Moondollars Coffee in New Zealand. Upon securing the master franchise Daily Grind Ltd would pay

of any of their ownership interests in Daily Grind Ltd. Lastly, at clause 4.2.1, Daily Grind Ltd will pay

The importance of parents in life is the essential thing that every child need. Father and mother serve
as the role models not only through direct relations with their kids but through the example they
present their attitude and behaviour inside the family and in the external world. Family play a big part

One Ring In The Hobbit
A symbol in The Hobbit is the One Ring. Rings normally symbolise eternity, and longevity because a
circle has no ending, but the One Ring symbolised both good and evil characteristics, like power and
commitment, but temptation and having no control. In the story, one example of someone who had no
control was Gollum, the corrupted hobbit. Gollum started out as a nice hobbit named Sméagol, but he
inadvertently found the One Ring and became addicted to it. He had no control over what he was
doing, and was tempted by the ring s power and kept on using it. Finally he became fully corrupted
and called the ring my precious and he started screaming and crying when Bilbo took the One Ring

and that would be shaky and faint. The book also says this: Gollum used to wear it at first, till it ...

The Underground Railroad Analysis
Unraveling History within The Underground Railroad While Colson Whiteheads, The Underground
Railroad (2016) memorializes slavery, it also broadens our otherwise unrealistic views of American
history. The novel follows a young slave girl, Cora, on her historic venture through delusional
America on the Underground Railroad, shortly after the congress passed the Compromise of 1850
(285). As Cora travels north, she discovers that every state individually expresses different attributes
of slavery (68). The Compromise of 1850 forced northerners to return all found fugitive slaves back to
the south (TC1850). During an interview with David Bianculli, Whitehead mentions that the default
view of slavery consists of strict slave catcher s and master s interpretations, rather than the historical
aspects of slavery (8 Aug. 2016). This observation allows him to focus on a fictional storyline that
derives nonfictional events in history. In, The Underground Railroad, Whitehead emphasizes an
alternate view of the American history pertaining to the institution of slavery. Throughout every
elementary History class, educators explain the colonization of America in a crudely oversimplified,
unrealistic way. Teachers often emphasize that the English simply overtook claimed land, rather than
stating the whites came to this land for a fresh start and to escape the tyranny of their masters, just as
the freeman had fled theirs. But the ideals [that] they held up for themselves, they denied for

Rhetorical Analysis – Other Voices, Other Rooms
In this essay, Other Voices, Other Rooms , Professor Gerald Graff offers that education at a university
could be exciting and rewarding for students. However, it applies to those who have developed the
skills at summarizing, weighing arguments and synthesizing conflicting points. Unfortunately, not all
students possess these skills and as they start getting confused they will care more about appeasing the
professor in order to obtain good grades. In return, they will give their professors whatever they want
even though it seems contradictory to their beliefs (339). Graff believes that not all college students
possess the skills necessary to be successful and that professors are only making the issue worse by
teaching in a vacuum. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Graff says that contrast is fundamental to learning and in order to fully grasp the concept, and the
subject needs to be understood in relation to other ideas. In his second example, in attempting to
strengthen his argument, Graff uses an academic reference, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by
Thomas S. Kuhn. Kuhn says,
Both the literati and the scientist have remained largely walled up within their clashing assumptions
about objectivity, the smugness of which might have been punctured had these parties been forced to
argue with each other in their teaching (341). Even though Graff and Kuhn share the same thoughts,
Kuhn s reference does not provide any evidence to support his claims. He then introduces Gregory
Colomb, which his reference again doesn t add credibility; it detracts from the essay because readers
have to read the text several times just to get through this part of the writing. Graff says, Imagine
trying to write and academic paper when you send that almost anything you say can be used against
you and that the intellectual moves that got you an A in existentialist philosophy may get you a C
minus and a dirty look in Skinnerian behaviorism (342) . He goes on to say, When students fail to

Comparing The Economic Growth Of India And China Since The...
Compare the economic growth of India and China since the Millennium.
India and China, the two dragons constantly fighting with each other, both historically and
economically. Although China appears to indulge in the media s thoughts, perhaps India has been
slowly but surely closing the gap or even taking the edge.
China has converted itself from a closed, centrally planned system to a more market centred one that
has a major global role. To illustrate this, it became the world s largest exporter in 2010. These
reforms began with moving away from agriculture, and expanded to the increased autonomy for state
enterprises, the growth of the private sector, the development of their stock exchange, the movement
towards the modern banking system and transparency to foreign trade and investment. However, these
changes, of course, did not happen over night. China has implemented these reforms in a gradual way.
On the other hand, India has been doing much better now than in 2013. Economists predict the
country s economy to pick up further. The recent falls in commodity prices, hurting raw material
exporters such as other BRIC countries and South Africa, are beneficial for India, given that it imports
80% of the oil it consumes. Rich western economies may fret about the falling prices around the
world; Indians are pleased that they no longer have double digit inflation. Therefore, the diminishing
threat of inflation has prompted India s central bank to decrease interest rates in

Telephoto Lens
A telephoto lens can also change the perspective of the picture, giving a completely new angle or
focus to your photo. Also, telephoto lenses are handy at compressing perspective. This is when the
background of a photo appears to be closer to the subject than what is experienced with the naked eye.
This is beneficial when you cannot physically move your subject closer to the background. You can
also fill the frame of your photo by getting shots from a far distance. This will bring in objects further
back into the frame, filling out the edges of your shot nicely. With this lens, you can isolate far away
objects much better than with a wide angle lens. Since the telephoto zoom closes the distance between
you and your subject, it is ideal for capturing pictures of wildlife. Next to using an actual telescope, a

What were the most important causes and most important consequences of the emancipation of the
Serfs?
Serfdom, a system of virtual slavery tying the Russian peasants to their landlords, was abolished in
1861 under the imperial demand of Tsar Nicholas II. This change was put in place for many reasons,
including military defeat in Crimea, the economy and political system, which all contributed to the
backwardness of Russia as a nation, as they prohibited the introduction of other major reforms. In my
view, the most important cause of emancipation was the state of the economy, because the nature of
serfdom prevented the country from catching up with the west, and the most important consequence
was that the military was able to dramatically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another major cause of serfdom being abolished was because of the defeat in the Crimea and the
diminishing strength of the military. The defeat of the army in the Crimean war (1856) was seen as
humiliating, as Russian sense of pride was strongly based on its military, and it showed Russia s
backwardness as a nation. The structure of the army was impossible to utilise; mainly composed of
conscripted illiterate peasants, who were poorly trained and sentenced to a life in the army. They were
difficult to control, and torture methods like flogging (where all the skin was whipped off the back)
were commonplace. Because of this, the army fought with brute strength, rather than skilled precision,
and was becoming less and less effective as morale was low. The equipment provided was also of very
low quality. The view that emancipation had to happen to make the military stronger was supported by
many high profile people, such as War minister (D. Milyutin). Under the current system it couldn t be
reorganised, as it would have meant trained ex soldiers and reservists going back to villages with
guns, which would ve been risked uprisings. Railways were also needed to increase mobility,
impossible without industry. In order to become more effective, they also needed to reduce the size of
the military to

Pele In Hawaiian Mythology
According to Hawaiian mythology, Pele is the fire goddess. Connected to volcanoes, lightning, fire
and wind, she is considered the creator of the Hawaiian Islands. Due to this, Pele is one of the best
known gods of the islands. Even today, visitors to the Ainopio Trail and the summit of Mauna Loa
bring offerings to Pele. Long ago, native Hawaiians began this tradition by climbing Mauna Loa with
offerings to appease Pele and win her favor. This same gorgeous trail can be used by visitors to reach
the summit and commune with the goddess. Arriving at the Islands Long ago, Pele was born into a
family of six daughters and seven sons. According to mythology, her mother was the earth goddess,
Haumea, and her father was the dream god, Moemoe. Growing ... Show more content on

She fell for the mortal chief of Kauai, Lohiau. Hearing the sound of a hula festival, she used astral
travel to arrive at the festival where she immediately fell in love with Lohiau. Pele joined in the dance
and quickly won Lohiau s heart. They lived together happily until one day Pele returned home. She
promised to send for him, and her sister, Hiiaka, was sent to fetch him. Hiiaka s only requirement was
to go to Kauai, retrieve Lohiau and avoid kissing him. Arriving after many days, Hiiaka was distraught
to discover that Lohiau had died. Lucky for her, she saw his spirit darting above the mountain tops.
Capturing the spirit, she managed to return it to his body. Returning to Pele, Hiiaka was so excited that
she hugged and kissed Lohiau without thinking about it. Assuming that Hiaaka was trying to mock
her, Pele destroyed Lohiau by covering him in lava. At the same time, Pele s brothers had just returned
from traveling. Seeing the body of Lohiau, they brought him back to life and Lohiau fell in love with
Hiiaka. Together, Hiiaka and Lohiau settled down in a house on Ke e Beach in Haena. Today, a stone
wall from their house can still be seen. The Wrath of Pele Lives

Research Paper On Richard Branson
Richard Branson Innovation happens when people are given the freedom to ask questions and the
resources and power to find the answers. (Richard Branson) Richard Branson lived a troubled, yet
successful life. He is an inspiration to people all over the world. To me, Branson is living proof that
even if you fail, you can still succeed if you have the mindset and will to do so. Richard Branson had
three children by the names of Sam Branson, Holly Branson, and Clare Sarah Branson. He s had two
wives. In 1972 1979, he was married to a woman named Kristin Tomassi. His current spouse, married
in 1989, is Joan Templeman. A famous quote by Richard Branson says If you fall flat on your face, at
least you re moving forward. Branson was born on July 18th, 1950 in Surrey, England. According to
Biography Reference Bank , pg. 1 on Richard Branson, Branson s Father was a barrister, and his
mother, a flight attendant in London. My parents brought me up with this philosophy, Branson has
said, as quoted by Fred Goodman for Vanity Fair (May 1992): You must do things you mustn t watch
what other people are doing; you mustn t listen to what other people are doing. Branson took this
advice seriously and he ended up doing more sports than studying. His academic performance was
poor. Branson s dyslexia did not help his academic performance.. He went through several schools and
struggled for a long period of time with schooling. Virgin.com is Richard Branson s website today

Celebrate Columbus Day
People have many different opinions. There are so many examples however today s argumentative
essay is about Christopher Columbus, for many people Columbus is a hero for other people he is not.
For examples I believe that Columbus is not a hero he is just a regular person therefore I think that the
national American day should not be called Columbus day. We don t celebrate Columbus Day in this
house, and we never will. It s not that we don t enjoy holidays when they come around. We love
holidays around here as much as anyone, but there are some holidays that, in my opinion, should not
be celebrated. Columbus Day is one of those holidays I believe should not be celebrated for many
reasons. One Nobody celebrated the enslavement and rape of

Essay about The Second Amendment
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep
and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. Second Amendment. Throughout history, this sentence of
twenty seven words has caused an intense debate. The polemic is that some people claim that a gun
control policy is unconstitutional, while others disagree and even say it is necessary in order to reduce
crime. Now, what does gun control mean? If it means to analyze who is responsible enough to own a
gun by a Universal Background Check ; that sounds right to everyone. But in the article What Are
Obama s Gun Control Proposals? An Easy Guide published in the National Journal by Matt
Vasilogambros. The author states that the gun control ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Supporters of gun control claim that if there were no guns on the streets, massacres like the one in
Sandy Hook could have been prevented. Gun control supporters also argue that arming everyone will
not save you from getting killed. They argue that in a gun shooting everything happens fast and you
usually do not have time react to the situation. Moreover gun control supporters state that it is more
difficult to buy a medicine than to order ammunition online from your home. In the article Just how
easy is it to buy a gun over the Internet? published in The Washington Post by Brad Plumer. The
author explains that even though the Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibits the direct shipping of
firearms, there are sellers that are willing to sell their guns even when researchers explicitly stated that
they probably couldn t pass a background check . This shows the weakness of the current gun
regulations and the need for stronger and efficient laws that reduces murder rates. Supporters of gun
control say that banning guns is the key to prevent massacres in public places or institutions. If there
were no guns, psychopaths would not have all that deadly artillery to kill people. Also many people
believe that the second amendment is not relevant anymore. When the constitution was written,
nobody, not even the founders thought that the nation would survive. In his article Gun Control Foes

Social Simulation Applies Computational Methods Essay
Social simulation applies computational methods to study issues in the social sciences, such as
sociology, political science, economics, anthropology, geography, archeology and linguistics
(Takahashi et al., 2007). There are a number of benefits in assessing social impacts by simulation,
including: (1) a robust tool to support governments, industries and communities to prepare and plan
for the future, manage risks and harness opportunities (Greiner et al., 2014); (2) allows the creation of
artificial societies, systems where basic social structures and group behaviors emerge from the
interaction between individual agents, in artificial environments, based on limited information and
computational ability (Zimbres and Oliviera, 2009); (3) allows the study of the effect of different
combinations of social, technical and natural characteristics of systems at various time scales (Raptis
et al., 2013); (4) can be utilized to predict the effect of a variety of social factors on the emergence and
evolution of social norms (Chen et al., 2012); (5) models can identify the complexity through
modeling the interaction of autonomous factors and deducing the rules for such a systems (Galland et
al., 2014); (6) methods can effectively analyze the non linear qualities of dynamic human interaction
among the individuals in a community (Dabbaghian et al., 2010); (7) are effectively a simplification of
the real world (Harvey et al., 2011); and (8) social impacts represent a learning strategy

Howard Moore Music
I have always loved The Lord of The Rings trilogy, it has been my refuge, my playground, and my
inspiration through the majority o my life. The music especially in the film as always touched me very
deeply and has encouraged me in such a dramatic way that I myself am pursuing music, both
performance and composition. Then beyond that, the film itself is a great source for my own personal
aesthetic. Now, is this also the product of incredibly talented advertising and marketing, yes, for sure.
However, it is undeniable that music and movies are irrevocable linked and have been linked since
long before this paper will be examining. While music was and is very important to film making, the
game was changed when Howard Shore masterfully composed his works for The Lord of The Rings.
His music has had such and impact upon the nature of music in the media that it even perpetrates into
video games. I would like to show a brief and surface level idea of the depth of his work, for I could
not do him justice. Furthermore, I am positive that there are more composers who have had the same
effect upon music and film in their own way, but in this I will focus upon him. In this paper, drawing
upon the filmscore, academic journals, my own personal experiences, literature, and the composer s
own word, I will argue that Howard Shore, through musical setting of The Lord of The Rings, used
techniques similar to Wagner s leitmotif and other musical techniques to create a precedent and
standard for

Pratt And Whitney s Vacation
Prologue After endless nights in the Newman Library on campus, I had finally graduated Virginia
Tech as a mechanical engineer. That summer I was travelling Europe with my sister, since the job
offer I received from Pratt Whitney allowed me to start working in late August. Well, it has been 3
years since I started working with Pratt Whitney and it has been one of the best decisions I have made
to work with this company. It has provided me with more education that i was not planning on doing,
but I was studying for my master degree in mechanical engineering and the company was paying for
the whole course.
It s Christmas vacation and the company is closed until Three King s Day and I am on my way to the
airport to take a flight to Reykjavik, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She moved out there about a year ago after getting a job offer from another sister company of Pratt

way to the resort, which I expected because she always gets excited to tell me about her adventures. I
sit there, listening to her the whole ride and enjoyed hearing about her new, happy life, but when the
bus comes to a stop, I was relieve to be getting off and walking to the Blue Lagoon Resort. The Blue
Lagoon is one of the most famous resorts and geothermal spa in the world and one of the most visited
attractions in Iceland. Nicole and I had to just wait in line and then change because we bought our
tickets with our package. Walking into the resort was a dream come true. I have always dreamt of
going to this magnificent resort and having a one of a kind experience here. I put on my bathing suit
and lotion my hair with special conditioner the resort provided me with because the natural minerals
in the water make hair extremely dry. Stepping out of the locker room were steps into the light aqua
water, leading to the outside portion of the lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is massive the different areas

The Election In The Election Of Liberia s Election
Liberia s 2017 election is set to be the first democratic transfer of power in decades (Pailey 2017). The
election came after Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former president, was unable to run because of
constitutionally mandated term limits. The pool of candidates shrunk from over one thousand to three
top candidates recently, with the runoff election being postponed for the time being. The three
candidates to remain are George Weah, of Weah s Coalition for Democratic Change, Joseph Boakai,
Vice President, and Charles Brumskine of the Liberty Party. In the first vote, Weah received 39
percent of the vote, Boakai 29 percent, and Brumskine 10 percent. Candidates need over 50 percent to
win in the first round, thus the run off. Weah is a popular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Brumskine s party goals include creating jobs, investing in infrastructure, reconciling the people,
ensuring the rule of law, and fighting corruption (Liberty Party Liberia 2017). The issues the people of
Liberia are voting on are highly connected to the study of contemporary African politics. A
cornerstone of African politics is the history it is built on. The country of Liberia is still impacted by
past colonial rule, civil war, and poor governance. All of these are common for countries in Africa. A
second important African election comes in the country of Rwanda. President Paul Kagame recently
won a third, seven year term. He won with a 99 percent margin of victory (Baddorf 2017). His
opponent was Frank Habineza, of the Democratic Green Party. Habineza placed importance in
environmental protections and allowing freedom of expression (afp 2017). Kagame s platform, though
sparse, vowed to strengthen the economy. Kagame s victory is tied to contemporary study of African
politics in many ways. Kagame is an excellent example of a leader whose personality has won him
elections, resulting in elections for cult of personality rather than policy. Kagame is credited with
assisting in ending the Rwandan genocide by leading rebel forces (Baddorf 2017). Further, the
international community supports Kagame as he brought the country to stability after the

The United States And Cuba Essay
The United States and Cuba
The United States is the leader of the free world. The United States exercises strength in this role
through trade agreements and military strength. Because of this, the foreign policies the United States
puts into place greatly affect the economies of other countries. This is especially true of Cuba. The
island of Cuba is just over 100 miles south of the Florida border.
The United States and Cuba have struggled to find common ground in regards to foreign policy over
the past few decades. In the Cold War, Fidel Castro, who would later become the dictator of Cuba took
control of Havana and with his revolutionaries overthrew Fulgencio Batista. The United States
disagreed with the communist ideology of Castro, but let him rule anyway. The United States took
economic issue only after Cuba began increasing trade with the communist Soviet Union. What began
as a reducing sugar imports from Cuba soon became a ban on almost of the products Cuba was
exporting. The Bay of Pigs invasion, where the United States tried to oust Fidel Castro with help from
the Central Intelligence Agency, was unsuccessful and deepened the rift between these two countries.
Cuba retaliated by granting permission to the Soviet Union to construct a missile base on Cuba. The
United States then threatened to invade Cuba. This famous Cuban Missile Crisis was eventually
averted. More importantly, it effectively demonstrates the mistrust between the United States and
Cuba.

Short Essay On Boudicca
Boudicca is one of Britain s greatest heroines. She was a freedom fighter who rebelled against the
Roman government. She was Queen to the Celts and was one of history s fiercest warrior queens in
history.
Boudicca was a famous queen of ancient Britain who led a rebellion against the Roman occupiers. She
was born in Colchester, South East England in 30 AD. Before marrying into kingship she was a simple
girl of royal descent. Around CE 48, she married Prasutagus, the head of an Iceni tribe in south East
England. Boudicca and her husband lived in what is now known as Norfolk, England. They were
granted semi independence from the Roman occupiers. Prasutagus was given the freedom to remain
King of Iceni, but under the control of Rome. Even though ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Roman commander on the island, Gaius Suetonius Paulinus, amassed all the man power that was
available to him, numbering only 10,000 men. Even though Paulinus was heavily outnumbered, he did
have several advantages. His legionaries were well trained, properly equipped with weaponry and
military experience gained throughout other battles. The Roman military was skilled at open combat
due to their superior discipline and resources. The limited maneuverability of the British forces,
combined with lack of military offensive tactics in the field, put them at a disadvantage to the
Romans. Historians note that many of the rebels had no body armor and were provided with makeshift
weapons, such as simple agricultural tools. Suetonius strategically selected a narrow gorge with a
forest behind him, opening out into a wide plain. The gorge would serve as protection to the Roman
flanks from attack, whilst the forest would block approach from the rear. This also prevented Boudicca
from bringing considerable forces to bear on the Roman position, and the open plain in front made
ambushes impossible. Before the battle began, Suetonius and the Romans had strategically gathered
on a rocky landscape that offered good protection, forcing Briton troops to charge uphill. When the
Britons reached the top of the hill they were out of breath and tactically vulnerable. The Romans saw
their chance and

Why Do Companies Sign Non Compete Agreements
Why Companies Should Have Employees Sign Non Compete Agreements Non compete agreements
are an important matter that every company should take seriously. In fact, Nike recently settled a
lawsuit against formers designers who defected to Adidas to help them open up a design center in New
York (see http://www.businessinsider.com/nike settles lawsuit against designers 2015 6). Non compete
agreements are critical to protecting the company and its future profits. What are the Legal
Requirements for a Non Compete Agreement? Every non compete agreement must satisfy three basic
requirements. First, it must protect a genuine business interest. For example, this could be trade secrets
or an established clientele base. Second, it must offer the employee ... Show more content on

Since information is power, any employees that discloses confidential information threatens the
financial health of the company. Non compete agreements also protect the investment that has been
made into recruiting, training and retaining top employees. Finally, having a non compete agreement
will reduce potential lawsuit costs if an employee does break the contract. What are the Customer
Benefits of Non Compete Agreements? Non compete agreements will also protect your customer
relationships. This is because sometimes when an employee leaves, their clients may faithfully follow.
Therefore, non compete agreements will increase the client confidence and retention. Non compete
agreements also help to clarify the professional expectations for employees, which will improve their
behavior with clients. What Happens if the Employee Breaks the Non Compete Agreement? A court
ordered injunction is the most common result of an employee breaking a non compete agreement. This
means that instead of seeking monetary damages, the employer simply asks the court to enforce the
non compete agreement by making the employee leave their new employer. However, seeking
compensatory damages due to loss of profits is also an

Satire In A Modest Proposal
The Era of Hard Feelings Satire has been a common theme throughout modern culture, varying from
media, to a person s everyday demeanor or personality. Satire is defined as a way of using humor to
show that someone or something is foolish, weak, bad, or the weakness and bad qualities of a person,
government, and/or society (Webster s). It has become a natural occurrence in America s way of life,
even all around the world. It eventually evolved into a popular way of communication called sarcasm.
However, satire was not always widely accepted in popular culture. It was often shunned or
misunderstood as a crude outlook on life. For example, an infamous piece titled A Modest Proposal
used a very large amount of satire throughout the entire essay ... Show more content on

This is an extremely satirical idea simply because of the fact that it is ridiculing two types of people in
one sentence. The first, being the Irish Catholics, are made fun of quite obviously. The innuendo is
that, prior to the statement, it is suggested that there is a surplus of papist babies born nine months
after Lent, later supported by calling Catholics the principal breeders (Swift 622). This is seen as an
advantage to decrease the amount of Catholics in England, taking the opportunity and selling more
babies, but with a religious background. This idea is supported by the second, more hidden bash of
prejudice Englishmen with a Protestant religious background. The idea that the number of papists
would decrease is presented through Swift while the narrator is in the mindset of an English Protestant
just to make fun and to point out how foolish the idea of it all actually is.
The next example of extreme satire is when the author refers to an outside source. Swift goes on to say
that A very worthy person, a true lover of his country, and whose virtues I highly esteem, was lately
pleased in discoursing on this matter to offer a refinement upon my scheme (Swift 621). This
illustrates that another person is willing to support

Robert decides to watch them practice shooting guns, but when they take their time to load their guns, he gets upset. He chooses Private Jupiter Sharts to specifically watch. Pvt. Sharts states that he hunted squirrels so his aim is up to par. Col. Shaw states that, a good man can fire three aimed shots in a minute so when, Pvt. Sharts cannot deliver quick load and unload of his rifle within the minute, Col. Shaw yells at him and shoots a gun in the air to show how fast he should be able to shoot. After getting flustered by the pressure of Col. Shaw, Pvt. Sharts drops the gun. Col. Shaw was also harsh on Private Trip. When Pvt. Trip disappears and is re discovered, he is sentenced to a flogging punishment. Major Cabot Forbes, a close friend of Col. Shaw, tries to convince Robert to change his mind about the flogging, because it would make them no better than their past slaveowners. Colonel Robert Shaw ignores Maj. Forbes comment because he realizes he needs to be tough on the regiment in order to prepare them for war. He tells Sergeant Mulcahy to proceed with the flogging. • 3. Wislawa Szymborska Listening to my own sensual voice, I seemed to convey a very strong knowledge of the poem, Hunger Camp at Jaslo by Wislawa Szymborska. I extracted the meaning of the poem and supported my assumption strongly with examples of literary technique throughout the poem. I scored myself in Criterion A, knowledge and understanding of the poem, with a 5. In terms of Criterion B, appreciation of the writer s choices, I brought forth a wide range of literary device examples ranging from alliteration and repetition, to metaphor and diction. I awarded myself with a score of 4 in this category as although my examples were plentiful and supportable there was certainly more room for analysis. In Criterion C, organization and presentation of the commentary, I believe I left the most room for improvement while although I structured my arguments well and delivered a clear and concise message there were ... In Criterion D, knowledge and understanding of the work used in the discussion, I felt I conveyed excellent knowledge of Art Spiegelman s Maus, I cited the unique symbols and used specific examples of both major and minor characters to explain how symbols connected to the overall theme of the graphic novel. Consequentially, I awarded myself with a score of 5 in this category. For Criterion E, response to the discussion questions, I felt that the questions themselves could have been stronger and the limited time may have given me some issues in terms of response strength, as a result I had a brief response that although strong, was certainly too brief. I awarded myself with a score of 4 in this category. In the last, and perhaps most academically relevant category Criterion F, language, I used very concise and academic diction as well as a varying sentence structure and tone when appropriate. There are many things that need to be taken in accounted for when it comes to Stadium and Arena Funding. The biggest thing first would be what type of stadium or arena you are trying to fund. I personally think that the tax payers should pay for half and the sports organizations should pay the other half. The tax payers should help with some of the funding but also some of the responsible should be put on the organizations to fund the other half needed. According to research, the public is more likely to pay a tax on things like: broad based taxes and special taxes. Special taxes are very important when it comes to funding. When it comes to professional sports, it is a little different than school sports for example, like a high school. In most high schools, the funding comes from a property tax increase and also a government bond. The community is more likely to increase the property taxes for a high school if the community is on board with the funding. Most high schools have some type of alumni donations that can go to help the school in any way that is needed. Keeping all this in mind, some school districts the public may vote against the property tax increase. Most high schools might have a wealthier district than others, which could cause a vote against the increase. There are many different things that can be taxed to help with stadium funding. Professional sports are more likely to get public support for a new stadium. Professional sports usually have a big fan base and serves a form of entertainment for fans. Professional teams also say they will leave and go to another city, which in turn increases funds to keep that certain team in that city. • 9. Similes In The Hanging, By George Orwell The hanging is a short story written by George Orwell is in essence an anti capital punishment piece written to persuade the reader that capital punishment s an unjust crime against humanity, and just as bad as whatever crime the criminal has committed. George Orwell throughout the literary piece makes use of similes, contrasts, and irony in order to persuade the reader of Orwell s viewpoint. Furthermore, throughout the short story in its entirety we see the constant use of similes in an effort to help the reader visualize the scene at hand. For instance, during the start of the story we see Orwell equate the jail cell to, small animal cages ; Orwell does this to help illustrate to the reader the truly abominable circumstances that befell the prisoners of the facility. If Orwell were to simply state that the conditions were atrocious it d be easier to distance ourselves from the conditions at hand, by using this simile he has in effect made it nearly impossible for the reader to distance themselves, as the imagery cascades into his thoughts through the simile. Moreover, as they grab onto the prisoner and forcibly hold onto him to prevent any potential escape attempt, Orwell likens the situation to, Men handling a fish which is still alive and may jump back into the water. Orwell does this with the intention of painting the image of a small slippery man being handled by men who can t get a grip upon him due to the rain and his stature. Furthermore, when the prisoner is crying out Ram, Ram, Ram! Orwell says it s akin to the, Tolling of the bell. which s basically to say it was the sound of death, as funeral homes toll the bell during a funeral service; ultimately, orwell uses these similes as a way to paint a picture of what s going on in the reader s head. It brings a darker undertone to the story and helps reinforce what Orwell sees as the dark, sadistic nature of capital punishment. Moreover, Orwell uses contrasting ideas to further indulge the reader plunging deeper into the abyss of gloom that Orwell is attempting to get the reader to stare into. Orwell illustrates this rather soundly when the dog is brought into the equation, It came bounding among us with a loud volley of barks, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on The Rise of European Secularism in the 19th Century SP History 117 Final Exam One May 23, 2013 The Rise of European Secularism During the Nineteenth Century Word Count: 2,152 In Europe, the long nineteenth century, (1789 1914) was a tumultuous era of political, economic, and social revolution which created an increasingly secular culture. Europeans of all races and classes looked outside the church to solve societal and familial issues. Gifted intellectuals proposed new philosophies on human thought and behavior, while innovative communication allowed ideas to travel quicker and easier than ever before. By the early 1800 s, Europeans began to question the role and necessity of the church and religion in their lives. Revolutionaries developed political and social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Enlightenment philosophers, like Voltaire, railed against organized theocracies and argued that religion prevented rational inquiry while it endorsed repression, tyranny and war. The philosophy of Immanuel Kant, who sought, liberation of the human mind from the dogmatic state of ignorance, had a major impact on the future ideology of revolutionaries.4 It was Enlightenment ideas which challenged people to question religious orthodoxy and use their own intelligence to draw conclusions about the legitimacy of traditional authority. These philosophies were the foundation of modern, egalitarian, democratic societies which would later replace Louis XVI s absolutist monarchy. Enlightenment ideals had profound effects upon the politics of the early and mid nineteenth century. However, a severe backlash against rationalism and liberal ideologies in France caused the return of church state power; while conversely, in the state of Prussia, Enlightenment ideals inspired a suppression of the church s power.5 Whether or not Enlightenment ideals and values were able to root themselves permanently in society, the introduction and widespread acceptance of secular ideas created major changes across Europe. After the Revolution in France, the old absolutist monarchy was replaced by the Constitution of 1791, and King Louis XVI was forced to share power with an elected legislative body in the new constitutional monarchy. • 11. Conflict As A Communication Problem Conflict is a disagreement between two or more parties who perceive that they have incompatible concerns. An action by one party is perceived as preventing or interfering with the goals, needs, or actions of another party leads to conflict. Conflicts can arise due to a variety of organisational experiences, such as differences in the interpretation of facts, negative feelings, differences of values and philosophies, or disputes over shared resources (Hunsaker and Alessandra, 2008). From a personal experience, conflicts can also arise from the initiation or the execution of the process of change. In a period of change, employees might feel threatened by the changes being made, thus leading to a conflict with the management. In the process of managing a conflict, it is first critical to determine and understand the cause of the conflict. Hunsaker and Alessander (2008), recognise the main sources of conflict as communication problems, structural design, and personal differences. Whilst in a managerial role, if I recognise the cause of conflict as a communication problem, I would take measures to once again clearly communicate with the employees to negate any apprehensions they might have. Also, I d take it up as an immediate requirement to enhance the communication channels in the organisation, to avoid such issues in the future. More detailed, Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson blame extractive institutions for the slow growth because in this occasion the political and economic systems are structures in a way to benefit the elite by extracting resources from the rest of the society . However, Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson also state that even extractive institutions can create economic growth. The writers claim that even though the extractive institutions are using the wrong means to an end, they still encourage as much growth as possible in order to have more to extract. This growth however, can be achieved if these institutions have at least a minimal degree of political centralization. Also such event can only last in the short run. Another aspect both books agree on is the fact that the only solution to this huge problem of economic stagnation is the emergence of inclusive institutions. Robert B. Reich claims that even though in the United States extractive institutions have the upper hand, there is still hope. He states that This vicious cycle is neither inevitable nor irreversible . They have a wing span up to nine and a half feet and as a result, they can glide for long distances without having to flap their wings for hours. Originally, these birds lived in different parts of North America, but settlers often shot, poisoned, and captured these birds. Those that remained faced a shortage of food supply until they could no longer survive in most areas. By 1900 s the remaining birds were now limited to the mountainous regions of Southern California (wildlife.ca.gov). • 18. The Use Of Cyanide On The Reefs The chance to recover these reefs is now. One example of it already being too late is in Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila. All these locations had thriving beautiful reefs a long time ago, but human impact has destroyed the infrastructure of the reefs and there is just a barren wasteland except for select hardy fish that live off of what is left. When I say human impact, an example of this is the sale of coral skeletons. The residents of China and surrounding areas would go out into the reef with dynamite. The fisher man would take the dynamite and wedge it into the reef and light the fuse. The reef would be blown into manageable pieces and then taken to the port to be dipped in bleach and put on the market as decoration. Another practice that is used is the use of cyanide on the reefs. This practice is still used today in order to supply the aquarium market with exotic fish that are too hard to catch. How the practice works is the fisherman will take a diluted solution of cyanide and dose the whole reef. If this is done correctly, the fish will not die, but become temporarily paralyzed so they can be picked up in a net and brought onto the boat. The fish will then be transferred to store and be put on sale in a crowded tank until someone takes them home. The larger fish are never targeted for aquarium homes due to the size and lack of demand. When you have an ecosystem as complicated as a reef, taking out chunks of the food chain will only have very negative impacts. The reefs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. One Ring In The Hobbit A symbol in The Hobbit is the One Ring. Rings normally symbolise eternity, and longevity because a circle has no ending, but the One Ring symbolised both good and evil characteristics, like power and commitment, but temptation and having no control. In the story, one example of someone who had no control was Gollum, the corrupted hobbit. Gollum started out as a nice hobbit named Sméagol, but he inadvertently found the One Ring and became addicted to it. He had no control over what he was doing, and was tempted by the ring s power and kept on using it. Finally he became fully corrupted and called the ring my precious and he started screaming and crying when Bilbo took the One Ring from him. The book says: He wanted it because it was a ring of power, and if you slipped that ring on your finger, you were invisible; only in full sunlight could you be seen, and then only by your shadow, and that would be shaky and faint. • 32. The Underground Railroad Analysis Unraveling History within The Underground Railroad While Colson Whiteheads, The Underground Railroad (2016) memorializes slavery, it also broadens our otherwise unrealistic views of American history. The novel follows a young slave girl, Cora, on her historic venture through delusional America on the Underground Railroad, shortly after the congress passed the Compromise of 1850 (285). As Cora travels north, she discovers that every state individually expresses different attributes of slavery (68). The Compromise of 1850 forced northerners to return all found fugitive slaves back to the south (TC1850). During an interview with David Bianculli, Whitehead mentions that the default view of slavery consists of strict slave catcher s and master s interpretations, rather than the historical aspects of slavery (8 Aug. 2016). This observation allows him to focus on a fictional storyline that derives nonfictional events in history. In, The Underground Railroad, Whitehead emphasizes an alternate view of the American history pertaining to the institution of slavery. Throughout every elementary History class, educators explain the colonization of America in a crudely oversimplified, unrealistic way. Teachers often emphasize that the English simply overtook claimed land, rather than stating the whites came to this land for a fresh start and to escape the tyranny of their masters, just as the freeman had fled theirs. YAK was first funded by a frozen yogurt company that wanted teens to have a place they can be themselves without fear of being teased. The librarians decided to call the program YAK in thanks of the funding that they had received. Once a month the teens get to plan out what they want to do that month. Some of the things that get chosen are improv, creative writing, trivia, game day, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, murder mysteries and the occasional game of Quidditch at the park. • 35. Rhetorical Analysis – Other Voices, Other Rooms In this essay, Other Voices, Other Rooms , Professor Gerald Graff offers that education at a university could be exciting and rewarding for students. However, it applies to those who have developed the skills at summarizing, weighing arguments and synthesizing conflicting points. Unfortunately, not all students possess these skills and as they start getting confused they will care more about appeasing the professor in order to obtain good grades. In return, they will give their professors whatever they want even though it seems contradictory to their beliefs (339). Graff believes that not all college students possess the skills necessary to be successful and that professors are only making the issue worse by teaching in a vacuum. ... Graff says that contrast is fundamental to learning and in order to fully grasp the concept, and the subject needs to be understood in relation to other ideas. In his second example, in attempting to strengthen his argument, Graff uses an academic reference, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn. Kuhn says, Both the literati and the scientist have remained largely walled up within their clashing assumptions about objectivity, the smugness of which might have been punctured had these parties been forced to argue with each other in their teaching (341). Even though Graff and Kuhn share the same thoughts, Kuhn s reference does not provide any evidence to support his claims. He then introduces Gregory Colomb, which his reference again doesn t add credibility; it detracts from the essay because readers have to read the text several times just to get through this part of the writing. Graff says, Imagine trying to write and academic paper when you send that almost anything you say can be used against you and that the intellectual moves that got you an A in existentialist philosophy may get you a C minus and a dirty look in Skinnerian behaviorism (342) . India and China, the two dragons constantly fighting with each other, both historically and economically. Although China appears to indulge in the media s thoughts, perhaps India has been slowly but surely closing the gap or even taking the edge. China has converted itself from a closed, centrally planned system to a more market centred one that has a major global role. To illustrate this, it became the world s largest exporter in 2010. These reforms began with moving away from agriculture, and expanded to the increased autonomy for state enterprises, the growth of the private sector, the development of their stock exchange, the movement towards the modern banking system and transparency to foreign trade and investment. However, these changes, of course, did not happen over night. China has implemented these reforms in a gradual way. On the other hand, India has been doing much better now than in 2013. Economists predict the country s economy to pick up further. The recent falls in commodity prices, hurting raw material exporters such as other BRIC countries and South Africa, are beneficial for India, given that it imports 80% of the oil it consumes. Rich western economies may fret about the falling prices around the world; Indians are pleased that they no longer have double digit inflation. Serfdom, a system of virtual slavery tying the Russian peasants to their landlords, was abolished in 1861 under the imperial demand of Tsar Nicholas II. This change was put in place for many reasons, including military defeat in Crimea, the economy and political system, which all contributed to the backwardness of Russia as a nation, as they prohibited the introduction of other major reforms. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another major cause of serfdom being abolished was because of the defeat in the Crimea and the diminishing strength of the military. The defeat of the army in the Crimean war (1856) was seen as humiliating, as Russian sense of pride was strongly based on its military, and it showed Russia s backwardness as a nation. The structure of the army was impossible to utilise; mainly composed of conscripted illiterate peasants, who were poorly trained and sentenced to a life in the army. They were difficult to control, and torture methods like flogging (where all the skin was whipped off the back) were commonplace. Because of this, the army fought with brute strength, rather than skilled precision, and was becoming less and less effective as morale was low. The equipment provided was also of very low quality. The view that emancipation had to happen to make the military stronger was supported by many high profile people, such as War minister (D. Milyutin). Under the current system it couldn t be reorganised, as it would have meant trained ex soldiers and reservists going back to villages with guns, which would ve been risked uprisings. However, it is undeniable that music and movies are irrevocable linked and have been linked since long before this paper will be examining. The island of Cuba is just over 100 miles south of the Florida border. The United States and Cuba have struggled to find common ground in regards to foreign policy over the past few decades. The Roman military was skilled at open combat due to their superior discipline and resources. The limited maneuverability of the British forces, combined with lack of military offensive tactics in the field, put them at a disadvantage to the Romans. Historians note that many of the rebels had no body armor and were provided with makeshift weapons, such as simple agricultural tools. Suetonius strategically selected a narrow gorge with a forest behind him, opening out into a wide plain. The gorge would serve as protection to the Roman flanks from attack, whilst the forest would block approach from the rear. This also prevented Boudicca from bringing considerable forces to bear on the Roman position, and the open plain in front made ambushes impossible.
