African American Student Achievement Essay
When it comes to continuing education either in postsecondary education or as adult learners, there
are several options that students can choose from. Students can go to a public or private school. They
can attend a 4 year institution or they may decide to attend a community college. Most students who
attend a community college go there to obtain an associate degree, to complete some type of
certification, or before they matriculate to a 4 year institution. The cost of attendance to a community
college is cheaper than the attendance to a 4 year institution. Research states that African American
students graduation rates are less than any other group of students. Since this is an issue at 4 year
institutions, I wanted to review this perception at the community college level. In this article, I will
review and discuss the content of an article entitled, Calling Out the Elephant: An Examination of
African American Male Achievement in Community Colleges by Edward C. Bush and Lawson Bush,
V. that was published in the Journal of African American Males in Education in 2010.

Julius Caesar Tragic Figure Quotes
After reading the Tragedy of Julius Caesar, think who best fits the role of a tragic figure
In this play? There are many tragic figures, but the one who stands out the most and who practically
defines the play as a tragedy would be Brutus. In the Tragedy of Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare
portrays Brutus as the tragic figure. Marcus Brutus fits Aristotle s definition of a tragic figure.
Aristotle s definition explains a tragic figure as a [great] man who is neither a paragon of virtue and
justice nor undergoes the change to misfortune through any real badness or wickedness but because of
some mistake.
Aristotle defines a great man as a man of noble birth who is neither a model of perfection nor totally
evil. He defines a mistake or hamartia as a flaw. The great man falls through though not entirely
because of some weakness of character, some moral blindness, or error. Brutus fits this description,
being a highly regarded ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this quote, Cassius (a conspirator) is referring to Caesar. Cassius is very envious of Caesar and
doesn t think that Caesar should have all of the power because he wants it for himself. This is also
how the rest of the conspirators (aside from Brutus) feel. The conspirators jealousy is their motivation
for wanting Caesar dead. Whether or not Brutus decision to join the conspirators and their pan for
murder is a mistake is debatable. However, it is obvious that the decision is what led to the misfortune/
fall of Brutus character. Brutus explains to Cassius No, Cassius, no. Think not, thou noble Roman, that
ever Brutus will go bound to Rome; he bears too great a mind. But this same day must end that work
the ides of March begun, (V, I, 112 115). After Caesar s death, Brutus allows Mark Antony to speak at
the funeral, and much to his surprise Antony turns the people of Rome against Brutus and the other

of heads rose, felt the wind, and we were scented, seen! To them we were fresh meat, after possible
weeks of starving. We were shaken from what we saw. We ran. We ran to the nearest closet and hid
inside. A cleaning supplies closet is where I hoped we would end up. There are many valuable tools to

The Effects of Violent Video Games on Aggressive Behavior...
In recent years, technological advances have introduced many new forms of entertainment, one of the
most popular being video games. Since their introduction, professionals and parents have become
concerned with the addictive power that video games can have on people, particularly children and
adolescents. Today, concern has shifted from the addictive effects of video game playing to the
possible effects that they have on players aggression levels. As defining aggression as any thoughts or

Summary Of A Good Book Of Mice And Men
In A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men , Thomas Scarseth, presents examples to argue why
John Steinbeck s book, Of Mice and Men, is a good book to learn from. Even though people enjoy a
light, carefree story with a happy ending, Scarseth explains why the vulgar content of OMAM, that
would turn some readers away, is needed for the story to have meaning.
Referring to what great literature looks like, Thomas Scarseth has a decent idea. In his assessment,
Scarseth claims great writers and readers know that sour endings in literature works are sometimes
crucial. His opinions on what makes a great writer and reader makes sense because he is an English
professor at University of Wisconsin La Crosse. Because this is an essay and likely to be read by
scholars and students, it is reasonable that the author would say, But the greatest writers and the best
readers know that literature is not always only mere sugar candy; it can sometimes be a strong
medicine... , as he is either praising or insulting the readers intelligence based on their point of view
on happy endings in literature. Realistic tragedy in literature is unpleasant to the people who believe in
idealistic happy endings. Unfortunately, tragic endings are necessary for prosperous knowledge, which
is what great readers and writers gain from these literature types called Tragedy. From here, it can be
argued that Scarseth is correct about the needed bitter endings. When reading, He pulled the trigger

Language in my Thought and my Action
Since I was born, I have been learning languages consciously and unconsciously without asking why.
S.I. Hayakawa and Alan R. Hayakawa s Language in Thought and Action remind me the goal of the
study of language to learn to think more clearly, to speak and to write more effectively, and to listen
and to read with greater understanding.
This book is divided into 2 parts, the functions of language and language and thought. The deepest
debt of the author in this book is to the general semantics. It is designed to educate the reader using
concepts that are first explained in straightforward terms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Open and Closed Mind
Hayakawa summarized The Open and Closed mind on pages 131 3. It tells that people with closed
minds apparently feel threatened and fearful. If someone trusted the speaker, but rejected his
statement, he would view the speaker as unconsciously on the enemy side. If someone rejected the
speaker, the statement is unacceptable to him too. He rejects both. They are two valued people, which
have to like everything about the speaker or nothing. Reasonably secure and well organized persons
enjoy their own belief system, but they are also open to information about their disbeliefs system.
They can empathize with persons who hold others ideas that they do not believe in, is to have an open
mind.
A question raised up in my mind is that, am I a news anchor with an open mind? Theoretically, anchor
should be open minded, to writing the true story and report the fact o the audiences. But, if I am a
closed mind anchor, I know in advance which side I am on, and engage the correspondent or accept
the article that will give aid and comfort to that side. Forsaking the obligation to illuminate, I may turn
on the heat. However, the result is inevitable: the other side fights back. But in this world, whatever

Comparison In Walt Disney s Sleeping Beauty And Maleficent
Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent
Walt Disney s Sleeping Beauty story is widely considered one of Disney s best traditional fairytales,
and modern day Disney executives decided to translate the entire story to live action. I m going to be
comparing the Disney storybook version of Sleeping Beauty, to the modern day, live action film,
Maleficent, highlighting differences and similarities.
In the Disney story, we don t find out why Maleficent wished such a curse on Aurora. She just showed
up at the celebration, and cursed the baby. The fairy, Merryweather, was able to soften the curse in the
book, but in the film, Maleficent made it appear as if she was softening the curse, although she didn t
believe she was. In the film, Maleficent cursed Aurora because her father, now the king, had
Maleficent deep in love with him since they were children. Aurora s father had always dreamed about
being the king, and when he got the chance to pursue this dream, he took it; breaking Maleficent s
trust and her heart. He took her most beloved possession from her her wings. Maleficent Thought she
had found true love, because on her 16th birthday, before the king had stolen her wings, he gave her
true love s kiss. After finding out that royalty was more important to Aurora s father than she was, she
began to believe that there was no such thing as true love. In the film Maleficent, there is a lot of
background added to the story, whereas in Disney s story Sleeping Beauty, there is virtually no
background added to Maleficent s character, or her intentions.
In Disney s story and in the live action film, the three good fairies were sent into the forest, disguised
as peasant women, to raise Aurora until the day after her 16th birthday. Aurora was raised with no
knowledge of where she came from, or that she was the princess of the land; she was now named
Briar Rose, for the sake of keeping her safe, and a secret. In the film, Maleficent watches over Briar
Rose and begins to interact with her and care about her, and love her. In both the film and the
storybook, a prince comes across Briar Rose, and they are instantly attracted to each other. It is soon
time for the princess to return to the castle, and her parents. In the book, the

The World s Largest Seed Company
Prosperous farmers mean more employment, more prosperity for the workers and the business men of
every industrial area in the whole country. Franklin D. Roosevelt. The world s largest seed company,
with sales over $10.5 billion is Monsanto. Monsanto specializes in biotechnology, or genetic
modification. Scientist modify crop seeds to better suite environmental needs, provide a higher crop
yield, and to create resistance to insects. These seeds are modified to withstand weeks of droughts,
deter weeds from growing, and to kill insects that may harm the functionality of the crop. Corn,
cotton, soybeans, and canola are the main seeds modified and produced by Monsanto. Approximately
90% of the world s genetically modified seeds are sold by Monsanto. (Ferrel, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2013)
Genetically modified foods cause an alarm for consumers, shareholders, and citizens. The safety and
concern of environmental effects are a major issue for Monsanto. Many individuals question the
overall safety of genetically changing and modifying the seeds. It is a concern that gene splicing could
cause a negative impact on those who eat the product. Whether it goes straight to the cow, then the
consumer or straight to the consumer, many individuals wonder if the seeds can be harmful.
Environmental effects are also a great cause for concern. The use of Roundup Ready herbicide
containing glyphosate is questioned. Glyphosate has the ability to harm birds, insects, and amphibians

between adolescents in good physical health and the quality of the relationship with their parents
regardless of gender, was statistically significant by results of this questionnaire. The results show that
there is a correlation between the relationship (closeness) to parents and general health of adolescents.

correlation between the curfew variable and ability to select friends, meaning that, adolescents who

correlation between the quality of parenting methods and the general health of the adolescents. This
shows that positive parental disciplinary techniques where parents balance being actively involved in
their adolescent children s activities and habits while maintaining a level of trust in allowing them to
make some decisions on their own may positively affect their children s general health. These findings
are consistent with and relate to a finding by a previous study which found that: adolescents who
perceived that their parents knew their friends, where they went at night, how they spent their money,
what they did with their free time, and where they were most afternoons, were less likely to begin to

Imagine is a brief and melancholy exploration into the lives of a family that is forced to deal with a
rare genetic disease.
Here in the year 2017, we are very fortunate to be living at a time of medical advancement. Ailments
and illnesses once thought to be death sentences centuries or even decades ago can be cured by a
simple pill or vaccine. With that said, scientists and doctors still do not have all the answers. While we
are much less likely to die of common diseases, there are some that are not so easily combatted. Some
afflictions are difficult or near impossible to treat, and this is especially arduous for those who are

father (Dan Burman) try to cope with the fact that their daughter cannot have a normal life. Given his
age, Mason s skills as a director shine brightly in this piece. The cinematography, editing, lighting, and
acting are all top notch. This young man has some serious talent, and has a lot of potential going
forward as a filmmaker. If you want to cry at a short film, Imagine will fulfill that need. This dramatic
short will make you commiserate with the characters, and hope against all hope that Millie gets better.
Parents can relate to the heartache of seeing their children go through so much pain, and when the
family in the film react to their daughter s condition, it comes off as genuine. Imagine is unrelenting
with its melancholy tone. There are no jokes to bring levity to the situation. There is no sugarcoating
of the deadly circumstances that Millie is forced to confront. While this does make the short film hard
to sit through, it brings an air of realism to the story. Families dealing with NP C know how serious
the condition can be, and know that it is no laughing matter. It also emphasizes the need for funding
the research of this disease, which is why it was made in cooperation with several charities dedicated
to the fight against it. Imagine may not be the most uplifting of tales about fighting disease, but it is a

Pros And Cons Of School And Prison
Rooted in the strict controlling environment created by an old and aging public school system the
school to prison pipeline is a path many students in the United States will face. School and prison are
so similar students who go through the system will stay in the system. From dress codes to hours,
what is and isn t allowed schools and prisons are so similar it makes sense that there is a pathway
connecting them. Both impede on the liberty promised by the government and create a circle of
manipulation and control. The United States public school system impedes on the liberty promised to
the citizens of the United States of America and has been since the beginning. The public school
system started as a way to remove children from the streets during the day and to educate them. The
reason for the young to be educated was only so they would be usable for the workforce when they
were older. Later the bells and switching of classes were introduced. The bells are similar to the ones
that represent the bells in a factory. Switching of classes, the assembly line. As time passes more and
more restrictions were placed on the students attending schools. Rules were made and the freedom of
the students was imposed on for insurance and money purposes. Adults control everything the students
do. This control prohibits the fulfillment of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Start with Life.

This reminded me of the humility and simplicity that governs monks lives and was outlined in the
Rule of Saint Benedict. Also, as we entered the church I noted that the seats faced each other, which I
thought was different from my own Catholic church where the pews face the front of the church. The
striking of the bells in the bell tower prompted the monks and other visitors to enter the church. The
order of the service consisted of readings from various scriptures. The first part of the prayer consisted
of the readings of the introductory verse, followed by the hymn of the Office of Holy Virgins, Psalm
134, Canticle: Christ the Image of God, the Magnificat Antiphon, the Canticle of Mary, and finally the
Commemoration of the Blessed Virgin. Prior to entering the church for the service, Brother Francis
pointed out that Cistercian monasticism s prayer service was highly influenced by Gregorian chants.
Accordingly, the service consisted of a Gregorian chant like singing and the monks often stressed
syllables for long periods of time, which made it initially difficult to follow. Moreover, the chanting of
the prayers was accompanied by one of the monks playing an organ in a very repetitive pattern
consisting of only several notes. During the service there was a constant transition between standing
and sitting which occurred during the first reading and

The Corruption Of The Shortcomings Of Korean Americans In...
When the streets of Los Angeles exploded on April 29, 1992, Korean Americans found themselves in
a crisis of identity. Known to them as Sa i gu, or 4 2 9, the five day uprising bluntly revealed their
cultural separation and its shortcomings. As Los Angeles fell apart, local Korean business owners
found themselves confronting their prejudice, which had undermined their relationship with black
customers. Following the exposure of these two issues during and after the riots, a mental shift in the
Korean American community became evident through its response to the event. By exemplifying the
involvement of Korean merchants in interethnic disputes, the Los Angeles riots prompted the
integration of Korean Americans into America s multicultural society.
Prior to the upheaval in 1992, the economic situation of many Korean immigrants, including those
who were merchants in Los Angeles, influenced their perceived isolation from other Americans.
Although a majority of these Koreans had a high education and desired to work as professionals in
America, their foreigner status and limited English prevented them from doing so. Consequently, they
resorted to running small businesses, hoping to eventually achieve mainstream success and therefore
upward mobility. To progress toward this goal, Korean merchants depended on each other for funding;
however, despite the financial advantages that this networking brought, it simultaneously kept
Koreans from engaging with the society that they

Comparing The Scottsboro Trial And Tom Robinson s Trial

Trial, in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. As Harper Lee grew, up, she was surrounded with
news of the Scottsboro Trial, which had a large impact in her novel. But there are also many deeper
parallels between these two. Both trials contained African American(s) being accused of rape to a
white woman, but Lee had a way to show this through a child s eyes, presumably, her as a young child

Mayella Ewell is a good representation of both Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. [Ruby] was given little

Ruby, but the talkative qualities of Victoria. Lee wrote her this way, as she is the false accuser in Tom
s Trial, as Ruby and Victoria in the Scottsboro Trial. If we delve deeper into Mayella s experiences
with her father, and him persuading (or threatening) her to accuse Tom, this can be compared to
Victoria and Ruby being bribed by two lawyers to change their testimony. They were both asked to do

Victoria and Ruby did not want to admit they were spending time with African Americans, as that fact
would destroy their images. The characterization of Mayella is based off the actions and feelings of
Victoria and Ruby. The Juries in both stories were very harsh against the defendant(s). In the

The Involvement Of The Cyber Attack
In 2007 Estonia was one of the most developed nations in Europe in terms of information and
communication technology advancement. Estonia had a common practice of relying on the internet for
business transactions. In the early weeks of spring, Estonia was hit by a series of politically motivated
cyber attacks. Numerous parties and organisation suffered different forms of denial of service. The
main parties included the Estonian government agencies, schools, banks and Internet Service
Providers. The motivation for the cyber attack was due to the fact that the Estonian government made
the decision to move a Soviet memorial of World War II from its previous or initial location in central
Tallinn to a military cemetery. This resulted to an outburst and riots in the Estonian streets, violence
towards the Ambassador of Estonia, Russia implementing indirect economic sanctions and the most
relevant, politically motivated cyber attack against Estonia. The Estonian state wasn t critically
affected from the cyber attack of 2007, since to a high extend the state functions and objects of

examiners to register qualified voters. In August of 1965, the Voting Rights Act was issued, which
allowed African Americans their right to vote under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution of the
United States. By the end of 1965 more than 250,000 African Americans became registered voters.

Analysis of Harlem by Langston Hughes
Analysis of Harlem by Langston Hughes
Through the turbulent decades of the 1920 s through the 1960 s many of the black Americans went
through difficult hardships and found comfort only in dreaming. Those especially who lived in the
ghettos of Harlem would dream about a better place for them, their families, and their futures.
Langston Hughes discusses dreams and what they could do in one of his poems, Harlem. Hughes
poem begins: What happens to a dream deferred...
Hughes is asking what happens to a dream that is being put off. What do these dreams do, do they do
good, do they do bad, or do they do neither good nor bad? He continues by stating this simile: Does it
dry up like a raisin in the sun? Using this simile he is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hughes continues his poem by stating more on dreams that have been put off in lines four and five, he
states:
Or fester like a sore and then run?
Here , Hughes uses a sore as a simile for dreams that have been put off. He wonders if these delayed
dreams get worser and worser over time that they just disapear from the person. Hughes continues his
questioning by using another simile for postponed dreams, Does it stink like rotten meat? Hughes is
trying to convey that over a period of time a person may become so tired of the dream that they have
postponed that it would actually start to stink, they would start to hate it, and want to get rid of it just
as if someone would want to get rid of a piece of rotten meat. He continues by using another simile for
postponed dreams: Or crust and sugar like a syrupy sweet?
Here, Langston Hughes states of a dream that could be so good and so sweet, but over time the dream
has gotten old and bad just like a syrupy sweet could crust and sugar over time. Hughes advances with
another simile for defered dreams: Maybe it just sags like a heavy load Here, Hughes states of a dream
that is so huge and farfetched that it could never happen. He ends his poem by saying, Or does it
expolode?
Langston Hughes relays that deferred dreams can do many things, though they mostly do worse than
help you. He is tryng to convey that you really should not postpone your dreams don t set

The World s First Short Message Service
On December 3, 1992, the world s first short message service, or SMS, was sent. Neil Papworth, a 22
year old communications engineer from the United Kingdom sent the simple message Merry
Christmas, to a friend via PC (Gayomali, 2012). Like almost all new technologies, the initial reception
of the SMS was slow. In 1995, two years after Nokia released the first ever texting phone, the average
American user sent just 0.4 texts per month (Gayomali and Erickson, 2012). Almost 22 years later, six
billion SMS messages are sent every day in the United States (Kelly, 2012). Text messaging is one of
the most widely used data applications in the world, as 81% of cellphone users have texting as an
option on their phones (Erickson, 2012). As its popularity has continued to grow at an exponential
rate, it more frequently raises the question of whether or not the act of text messaging has ruined the
art of conversation. Texting has many advantages. For one, the recipient of a text does not have to be
present to receive a message. Currently, the majority of text messages are sent to individuals for
personal reasons (Faulkner, 2012). Though it is not face to face communication, texting is used as a
one to one method of communication between friends, particularly teenagers (Faulkner, 2012). Long
distance relationships, friendships and various other connections have become possible due to the fact
that people can communicate on a constant basis despite being apart. Texting has

Setting
This novel takes place primarily in the city of Charlottesville, Virginia, during the period of the 1980s
to the 2000s. Renee and Rob both met there in a bar named the Eastern Standard both at the age of
twenty three. He initially planned to keep his relationship to Charlottesville strictly one of host and
guest. Both he and Renee didn t really favor Charlottesville. Then life had another plan for Rob and it
was to fall in love. The setting was also a crucial part in the story because it was a music thriving

that Renee and Rob made with each other. The setting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As this book pertains to his past, the choice of wording by the author shows the youth and free spirit
of a twenty year old that fell in love. For instance, Have you ever been in a car with a southern girl
blasting through South Carolina when Lynyrd Skynyrd s Call Me the Breeze comes on the radio?
Sunday afternoon, sun out, windows down, nowhere to hurry back to? I never had... shows the
youthful spirit that Rob had when he was with Renee, for she truly did show him how to enjoy his
youth and to have fun. However, as he reminisced through the pleasurable memories that Renee
brought to him, using diction he was able to express to the reader the sadness her death bestowed upon
him. We met on September 17, 1989. We got married on July 13, 1991. We were married for five
years and ten months. Renée died on May 11, 1997, very suddenly and unexpectedly, at home with
me, of a pulmonary embolism. She was thirty one... Through syntax, he was able to show a change in
mood from the serenity and peace that he felt with while being accompanied by Renee to her
unexpected death in his arms. The short sentences in this excerpt from the book show that there was
an abrupt interruption in his life and it caused a change in the way the author wrote. Nature took its
course.

The Right Of Free Speech
Throughout American history, the foundation on which American democratic principles are based, has
been repeatedly tested. In the 1700s, the right of free speech was challenged when President John
Adams proposed the Alien and Sedition Acts. Adams attempted to stop the Democratic Republicans
such as Thomas Jefferson, from criticizing government decisions. Similarly, during the Civil War
President Abraham Lincoln challenged freedom of the press when he took action to restrict the
printing of military news. Lincoln ordered his generals in the field to control the press and crack down
on speech critical of his administration to limit dissent against the war effort. However, one historical

Twentieth century U.S. history saw two major episodes of repression and violence against communists
and leftist radicals, that occurred approximately three decades apart. During the early part of the
1920s, America entered its first period of extreme anti communist sentiment, the First Red Scare.
After the successful Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917, American citizens began to fear the
threat of communist influence at home. At the end of WWI, American workers unhappy with wages
and spiralling inflation, launched widespread sometimes violent strikes with the support of growing
labor unions. Some of these unions called for government takeover of private industries. For instance,
railroad workers called for the national government to take permanent control of the railroad system.
The growing waves strikes signalled a period of extreme civil unrest; American citizens became
frightened that they would face a revolution similar to the one that had just taken place in Russia. In
response, Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, in an effort to gain the attention of American voters to
support his presidential aspirations, launched a nationwide crusade against anyone he identified as
having leftist views. Under Palmer s leadership, thousands of Americans were arrested for taking part
in alleged subversion, and thousands of others were stripped of their civil liberties. In violation of

Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg Manitoba on July 28 1958 Terry was raised in port Coquintlam,

Investigation Of Police District 11
On Thursday, March 31, 2016, at approximately 12:35 p.m., I, Trooper Bradley Brachear, received a

Police District 11 requested a reconstructionist respond to a three vehicle crash on the ramp from
Interstate 55 southbound to Tudor Avenue in East St. Louis Township, St. Clair County. I responded
from the Metro East Crime Lab in Belleville to assist. The crash resulted in five injuries.
At approximately 1:13 p.m., I arrived at the scene and met with Trooper Cox. Trooper Cox advised me

Trooper Cox completed the Illinois Traffic Crash Report 11 16 00806 to document the collision. A

NARRATIVE
During the collision, a gold 2000 Saturn LS1, driven by Cheri E. Post, was reportedly being pursued
by a black 2014 Ford Mustang GT, driven by Jordan M. Kinne, after a drug deal gone bad. The Saturn
and Ford entered the ramp from Interstate 55 southbound to Tudor Avenue traveling the wrong way.
While traveling from Tudor Avenue to Interstate 55, the Saturn and Ford entered the path of a silver
2005 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Pierre D. Manley. Once in the path of the Chevrolet, the front
passenger side of the Saturn struck the front passenger side of the Chevrolet.
After striking the Chevrolet, the Saturn was redirected to its left (south), where it struck the concrete
wall of the ramp. The Saturn deflected off the wall, and traveled back across the roadway to the right
(north), before coming to rest against the concrete wall bordering the north side of the roadway. In its
final resting position, the Saturn was facing northeast. After being struck by the Saturn, the Chevrolet
spun clockwise, where it was then struck on the front driver side by the front driver side of the Ford.
After being struck by the Ford, the Chevrolet was redirected back, where it came to final rest with its
back end near the concrete wall on the north side of the ramp. In its final resting position the

Struggle between Freudian Personalities in Joseph Conrad s...
Heart of Darkness, is not only an intense tale of pursuit, but also a psychological roller coaster as,
through the characters of the story, Joseph Conrad shows us a powerful struggle between the Freudian
personalities of id, ego and superego. The main characters of the novel, Marlow and Kurtz are mainly
identified with the id and the super ego type of personalities, and throughout the novel, these
characters are placed in intense situations which makes them question their own beliefs and reactions,
and ultimately their human personality. Hence, in between the characters, not only is there a battle in
the physical sense, but also on the meta physical level. This leads to a psychological imbalance

This part of our mind is responsible for our civilized behavior in the society, and our judgments based
on what our parents or our society has taught us to be good or bad. The superego is essential to lead a

back your needs or wishes. The id is the forbidden component of our psych. It deals with our
innermost wants and fantasies. It comprises of all our immediate and non sensible wants, and mostly,
one feels anxious or tensed if a person is ruled majorly by his id, and his needs are not met at once.
The id is the morally unacceptable part of our mind, and thus, it isn t the part of our psych that we

identified with the superego, as they are known to be the civilized race, whose main goal is to civilize
the backward races of the world . They live in the clutches of stringent societal rules, where their
behavior is completely mechanized and controlled by their superego and where even the slight hinting
of their inner wishes or wants in public is regarded as preposterously rude. But on complete contrast,

Circulating Tumor Cells Case Study
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs), represent tumor cells that contain a heterogeneous population of cells,
including apoptotic tumor and viable tumor cells that have cast off into the circulation or lymphatic
vessels from a primary or metastatic tumor and are transported around the body by undergoing
phenotypic changes that are accompanied by a process called as epithelial mesenchymal transition
(EMT) [69 73]. Evidence now suggests that the tumors has ability to make their own blood vessels
when they reach the size of 1 2 mm3 by inducing angiogenesis or through vasculogenic mimicry, the
blood vessels composed of endothelial cells and tumor cells. However, vasculogenic mimicry forms
blood vessels without endothelial cells. In fact, they are a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it is not necessarily always associated with metastasis, as only 0.01% of CTCs takes part in
metastasis [97, 99, 100]. Moreover, highly sensitive, single cell investigation showed marked
heterogeneity of individual CTCs for protein expression and localization, and the CTCs reflected the
character of both the primary biopsy and the transformations seen in the metastatic sites [101, 102],
which corresponds with the evidence of seed and soil hypothesis [103 105].
Amassing proof has demonstrated that CTCs can be utilized as a biomarker to non invasively
supervise cancer progression and provide direction to monitor the treatment [106 108]. The American
Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) approved CTCs as a tumor marker for breast cancer in 2007
[109, 110].
Nevertheless, CTCs detection, identification, enumeration and molecular characterization are very
challenging. Since, CTCs are uncommon in peripheral blood of patients (that is, 1 100 CTCs among
billions of normal cells) with a half life between 1 to 2.4 hours and due to its fragile nature it tends to
degrade when collected in standard blood collecting tubes [111 116].
CTCs being a heterogeneous population of cells, CTCs can be positively or negatively enriched on the
basis of: 1. Physical characteristics and 2. Immunologic or biological characteristics. Physical features
include; cell diameter 15 μm, nuclear cytoplasmic ratio 0.8,

New York City Public Transportation System
Beginning in June of 1952, when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority was founded, advances in
transportation in New York City have improved the city s developing economy and have benefitted
people to a great extent. Located in the heart of Manhattan, the MTA headquarters are home to
hundreds of different vehicles, ridden by thousands daily. The train tracks and bus routes run through
Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Bronx, unifying all five boroughs and improving
the lives of everyone Beginning at $0.05 and going up to $2.50, one way bus fare has slowly been
increasing since the MTA was founded. Although the cost depends mainly on how far the vehicle is
traveling, this is the standard expense and the difference is significant. This cost is beneficial to
travellers because it is inexpensive, and convenient for day to day use.
Along with convenience, there are multiple economic benefits to using New York City public
transportation. Pollution can become less of a problem, because travellers aren t taking individual cars
throughout the state. The system is reliable for workers and travellers, making New York City a busy
tourist area. The schedules are clearly posted, along with dozens of different times of the day to make
travelling less of a hassle. There is arguably less stress on the commuter about traffic on the streets and
less worrying about time since the transportation system is reliable. The problem of finding a place to

Music has long been my biggest passion. As a child, it was always around me: Beethoven sonatas and

Since then, I have developed a love for performance. Onstage, I feel perfectly at home with the

##ymbolism In The Jade Peony By Wayson Choy And The Yellow...
Many people are represented by their environment their surroundings reflect their
physical well beings regardless of its nature. Literature often manipulates this truth in order
to suggest a deeper meaning behind an otherwise mundane facade. The Jade Peony by
Wayson Choy and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman are two examples of
how symbolism is indicative of a character s physical state. For instance, both the grandma
and the bamboo shoots in The Jade Peony perish due to cold weather, and the narrator s
sense of freedom and intellectual activity is epitomized within the moonlight in The Yellow Wallpaper.
In both short stories, symbolism is used to portray the impending doom on the characters physical
state. This idea is clearly presented in The Yellow Wallpaper by the image of the bed being nailed
down to the ground and how that reflects her isolation in the room. In the beginning of the story, the
narrator despises the room she is confined in. She is stuck in the room day in and day out all day [she]
lies here on this great immovable bed it is nailed down (p.337). The significance of the bed being
nailed down and immovable plays a great role in the narrator s physical state: it signifies how the
narrator is immovable and can not leave the room. Just like the bed, the narrator is hypothetically
nailed down to the ground, unable to leave or rather do anything without the permission of her
husband. Another example of this takes place in The Jade Peony with the bamboo shoots dying of the
cold, just like the grandma. The whole household are strong believers of signs, so after the death of the
grandma her son went to her garden to look for a sign. He then looked at the frost killed shoots and
cringed: no, that can not be it (p.109). From this point on we are given a hint of how the grandma will
die, which is an important detail for further understanding the character s physical state. For instance,
while understanding the cold killing the bamboo shoots, the son then realizes that something his
mother loved and cared for dearly died of the same way. Overall, the two short stories share the
impending doom of the character s physical state through symbolism. Given

  • 2. African American Student Achievement Essay When it comes to continuing education either in postsecondary education or as adult learners, there are several options that students can choose from. Students can go to a public or private school. They can attend a 4 year institution or they may decide to attend a community college. Most students who attend a community college go there to obtain an associate degree, to complete some type of certification, or before they matriculate to a 4 year institution. The cost of attendance to a community college is cheaper than the attendance to a 4 year institution. Research states that African American students graduation rates are less than any other group of students. Since this is an issue at 4 year institutions, I wanted to review this perception at the community college level. In this article, I will review and discuss the content of an article entitled, Calling Out the Elephant: An Examination of African American Male Achievement in Community Colleges by Edward C. Bush and Lawson Bush, V. that was published in the Journal of African American Males in Education in 2010. Content ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Julius Caesar Tragic Figure Quotes After reading the Tragedy of Julius Caesar, think who best fits the role of a tragic figure In this play? There are many tragic figures, but the one who stands out the most and who practically defines the play as a tragedy would be Brutus. In the Tragedy of Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare portrays Brutus as the tragic figure. Marcus Brutus fits Aristotle s definition of a tragic figure. Aristotle s definition explains a tragic figure as a [great] man who is neither a paragon of virtue and justice nor undergoes the change to misfortune through any real badness or wickedness but because of some mistake. Aristotle defines a great man as a man of noble birth who is neither a model of perfection nor totally evil. He defines a mistake or hamartia as a flaw. The great man falls through though not entirely because of some weakness of character, some moral blindness, or error. Brutus fits this description, being a highly regarded ... Cassius is very envious of Caesar and doesn t think that Caesar should have all of the power because he wants it for himself. This is also how the rest of the conspirators (aside from Brutus) feel. The conspirators jealousy is their motivation for wanting Caesar dead. Whether or not Brutus decision to join the conspirators and their pan for murder is a mistake is debatable. However, it is obvious that the decision is what led to the misfortune/ fall of Brutus character. Brutus explains to Cassius No, Cassius, no. Think not, thou noble Roman, that ever Brutus will go bound to Rome; he bears too great a mind. But this same day must end that work the ides of March begun, (V, I, 112 115). • 7. Summary Of A Good Book Of Mice And Men In A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men , Thomas Scarseth, presents examples to argue why John Steinbeck s book, Of Mice and Men, is a good book to learn from. Even though people enjoy a light, carefree story with a happy ending, Scarseth explains why the vulgar content of OMAM, that would turn some readers away, is needed for the story to have meaning. Referring to what great literature looks like, Thomas Scarseth has a decent idea. In his assessment, Scarseth claims great writers and readers know that sour endings in literature works are sometimes crucial. His opinions on what makes a great writer and reader makes sense because he is an English professor at University of Wisconsin La Crosse. Because this is an essay and likely to be read by scholars and students, it is reasonable that the author would say, But the greatest writers and the best readers know that literature is not always only mere sugar candy; it can sometimes be a strong medicine... , as he is either praising or insulting the readers intelligence based on their point of view on happy endings in literature. Realistic tragedy in literature is unpleasant to the people who believe in idealistic happy endings. Unfortunately, tragic endings are necessary for prosperous knowledge, which is what great readers and writers gain from these literature types called Tragedy. From here, it can be argued that Scarseth is correct about the needed bitter endings. When reading, He pulled the trigger (Steinbeck 106), ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Comparison In Walt Disney s Sleeping Beauty And Maleficent Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent Walt Disney s Sleeping Beauty story is widely considered one of Disney s best traditional fairytales, and modern day Disney executives decided to translate the entire story to live action. I m going to be comparing the Disney storybook version of Sleeping Beauty, to the modern day, live action film, Maleficent, highlighting differences and similarities. In the Disney story, we don t find out why Maleficent wished such a curse on Aurora. She just showed up at the celebration, and cursed the baby. The fairy, Merryweather, was able to soften the curse in the book, but in the film, Maleficent made it appear as if she was softening the curse, although she didn t believe she was. In the film, Maleficent cursed Aurora because her father, now the king, had Maleficent deep in love with him since they were children. Aurora s father had always dreamed about being the king, and when he got the chance to pursue this dream, he took it; breaking Maleficent s trust and her heart. He took her most beloved possession from her her wings. Maleficent Thought she had found true love, because on her 16th birthday, before the king had stolen her wings, he gave her true love s kiss. After finding out that royalty was more important to Aurora s father than she was, she began to believe that there was no such thing as true love. In the film Maleficent, there is a lot of background added to the story, whereas in Disney s story Sleeping Beauty, there is virtually no background added to Maleficent s character, or her intentions. In Disney s story and in the live action film, the three good fairies were sent into the forest, disguised as peasant women, to raise Aurora until the day after her 16th birthday. Aurora was raised with no knowledge of where she came from, or that she was the princess of the land; she was now named Briar Rose, for the sake of keeping her safe, and a secret. In the film, Maleficent watches over Briar Rose and begins to interact with her and care about her, and love her. In both the film and the storybook, a prince comes across Briar Rose, and they are instantly attracted to each other. It is soon time for the princess to return to the castle, and her parents. Roosevelt. The world s largest seed company, with sales over $10.5 billion is Monsanto. Monsanto specializes in biotechnology, or genetic modification. Scientist modify crop seeds to better suite environmental needs, provide a higher crop yield, and to create resistance to insects. These seeds are modified to withstand weeks of droughts, deter weeds from growing, and to kill insects that may harm the functionality of the crop. Corn, cotton, soybeans, and canola are the main seeds modified and produced by Monsanto. Approximately 90% of the world s genetically modified seeds are sold by Monsanto. (Ferrel, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2013) Genetically modified foods cause an alarm for consumers, shareholders, and citizens. The safety and concern of environmental effects are a major issue for Monsanto. Many individuals question the overall safety of genetically changing and modifying the seeds. It is a concern that gene splicing could cause a negative impact on those who eat the product. Whether it goes straight to the cow, then the consumer or straight to the consumer, many individuals wonder if the seeds can be harmful. Environmental effects are also a great cause for concern. There was also a positive correlation between the curfew variable and ability to select friends, meaning that, adolescents who were able to select their own friends were more likely to also be able to choose their own curfew time by their parents. These results show a significance relating to the hypothesis, there was a positive correlation between the quality of parenting methods and the general health of the adolescents. This shows that positive parental disciplinary techniques where parents balance being actively involved in their adolescent children s activities and habits while maintaining a level of trust in allowing them to make some decisions on their own may positively affect their children s general health. A Short Film Hardships Of Disability Short Film Examines the Hardships of Disability Adam New Imagine is a brief and melancholy exploration into the lives of a family that is forced to deal with a rare genetic disease. Here in the year 2017, we are very fortunate to be living at a time of medical advancement. Ailments and illnesses once thought to be death sentences centuries or even decades ago can be cured by a simple pill or vaccine. With that said, scientists and doctors still do not have all the answers. While we are much less likely to die of common diseases, there are some that are not so easily combatted. Given his age, Mason s skills as a director shine brightly in this piece. The cinematography, editing, lighting, and acting are all top notch. This young man has some serious talent, and has a lot of potential going forward as a filmmaker. If you want to cry at a short film, Imagine will fulfill that need. This dramatic short will make you commiserate with the characters, and hope against all hope that Millie gets better. Parents can relate to the heartache of seeing their children go through so much pain, and when the family in the film react to their daughter s condition, it comes off as genuine. Imagine is unrelenting with its melancholy tone. There are no jokes to bring levity to the situation. There is no sugarcoating of the deadly circumstances that Millie is forced to confront. While this does make the short film hard to sit through, it brings an air of realism to the story. Families dealing with NP C know how serious the condition can be, and know that it is no laughing matter. It also emphasizes the need for funding the research of this disease, which is why it was made in cooperation with several charities dedicated to the fight against it. Pros And Cons Of School And Prison Rooted in the strict controlling environment created by an old and aging public school system the school to prison pipeline is a path many students in the United States will face. School and prison are so similar students who go through the system will stay in the system. From dress codes to hours, what is and isn t allowed schools and prisons are so similar it makes sense that there is a pathway connecting them. Both impede on the liberty promised by the government and create a circle of manipulation and control. The United States public school system impedes on the liberty promised to the citizens of the United States of America and has been since the beginning. The public school system started as a way to remove children from the streets during the day and to educate them. The reason for the young to be educated was only so they would be usable for the workforce when they were older. Later the bells and switching of classes were introduced. The bells are similar to the ones that represent the bells in a factory. Switching of classes, the assembly line. As time passes more and more restrictions were placed on the students attending schools. Rules were made and the freedom of the students was imposed on for insurance and money purposes. The Silence And Serenity Of The St. Joseph s Abbey Property From the moment that I stepped out of the car and onto the St. Joseph s Abbey property I noted that there was a silence, which was peaceful and unusual for me. The dichotomy between the loud sounds of students walking out of Hogan and cars speeding by at Holy Cross and the silence of the monastery apart from our group of students conversing with one another was particularly striking. This really surprised me because it was unusual for me to be in such a calm and silent place and I instantly felt a feeling of peace come over me. I think that this silence and serenity is indicative of a simpler and purer life in which one is able to block out all the distractions of the world around them and focus on their connection with God, which is in ... Also, as we entered the church I noted that the seats faced each other, which I thought was different from my own Catholic church where the pews face the front of the church. The striking of the bells in the bell tower prompted the monks and other visitors to enter the church. The order of the service consisted of readings from various scriptures. The first part of the prayer consisted of the readings of the introductory verse, followed by the hymn of the Office of Holy Virgins, Psalm 134, Canticle: Christ the Image of God, the Magnificat Antiphon, the Canticle of Mary, and finally the Commemoration of the Blessed Virgin. Prior to entering the church for the service, Brother Francis pointed out that Cistercian monasticism s prayer service was highly influenced by Gregorian chants. Accordingly, the service consisted of a Gregorian chant like singing and the monks often stressed syllables for long periods of time, which made it initially difficult to follow. Moreover, the chanting of the prayers was accompanied by one of the monks playing an organ in a very repetitive pattern consisting of only several notes. • 19. The Corruption Of The Shortcomings Of Korean Americans In... When the streets of Los Angeles exploded on April 29, 1992, Korean Americans found themselves in a crisis of identity. Known to them as Sa i gu, or 4 2 9, the five day uprising bluntly revealed their cultural separation and its shortcomings. As Los Angeles fell apart, local Korean business owners found themselves confronting their prejudice, which had undermined their relationship with black customers. Following the exposure of these two issues during and after the riots, a mental shift in the Korean American community became evident through its response to the event. By exemplifying the involvement of Korean merchants in interethnic disputes, the Los Angeles riots prompted the integration of Korean Americans into America s multicultural society. Prior to the upheaval in 1992, the economic situation of many Korean immigrants, including those who were merchants in Los Angeles, influenced their perceived isolation from other Americans. Although a majority of these Koreans had a high education and desired to work as professionals in America, their foreigner status and limited English prevented them from doing so. Consequently, they resorted to running small businesses, hoping to eventually achieve mainstream success and therefore upward mobility. To progress toward this goal, Korean merchants depended on each other for funding; however, despite the financial advantages that this networking brought, it simultaneously kept Koreans from engaging with the society that they ... • 20. Comparing The Scottsboro Trial And Tom Robinson s Trial Comparative Essay There are many basic parallels between the Scottsboro Trial and Tom Robinson s Trial, in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. As Harper Lee grew, up, she was surrounded with news of the Scottsboro Trial, which had a large impact in her novel. But there are also many deeper parallels between these two. Both trials contained African American(s) being accused of rape to a white woman, but Lee had a way to show this through a child s eyes, presumably, her as a young child experiencing the Scottsboro Trials firsthand. Lee wrote her this way, as she is the false accuser in Tom s Trial, as Ruby and Victoria in the Scottsboro Trial. If we delve deeper into Mayella s experiences with her father, and him persuading (or threatening) her to accuse Tom, this can be compared to Victoria and Ruby being bribed by two lawyers to change their testimony. They were both asked to do something they did not want to do, and we can tell this with this quote from To Kill a Mockingbird: Mayella jumped slightly at [Atticus question]. (Lee 246). Atticus had asked a question she was not prepared for, and had to think of an answer, that would satisfy Atticus and her father, but not her. Victoria and Ruby did not want to admit they were spending time with African Americans, as that fact would destroy their images. Estonia had a common practice of relying on the internet for business transactions. In the early weeks of spring, Estonia was hit by a series of politically motivated cyber attacks. Numerous parties and organisation suffered different forms of denial of service. The main parties included the Estonian government agencies, schools, banks and Internet Service Providers. The motivation for the cyber attack was due to the fact that the Estonian government made the decision to move a Soviet memorial of World War II from its previous or initial location in central Tallinn to a military cemetery. This resulted to an outburst and riots in the Estonian streets, violence towards the Ambassador of Estonia, Russia implementing indirect economic sanctions and the most relevant, politically motivated cyber attack against Estonia. Neil Papworth, a 22 year old communications engineer from the United Kingdom sent the simple message Merry Christmas, to a friend via PC (Gayomali, 2012). Like almost all new technologies, the initial reception of the SMS was slow. In 1995, two years after Nokia released the first ever texting phone, the average American user sent just 0.4 texts per month (Gayomali and Erickson, 2012). Almost 22 years later, six billion SMS messages are sent every day in the United States (Kelly, 2012). Text messaging is one of the most widely used data applications in the world, as 81% of cellphone users have texting as an option on their phones (Erickson, 2012). As its popularity has continued to grow at an exponential rate, it more frequently raises the question of whether or not the act of text messaging has ruined the art of conversation. Texting has many advantages. For one, the recipient of a text does not have to be present to receive a message. Currently, the majority of text messages are sent to individuals for personal reasons (Faulkner, 2012). Though it is not face to face communication, texting is used as a one to one method of communication between friends, particularly teenagers (Faulkner, 2012). After the successful Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917, American citizens began to fear the threat of communist influence at home. At the end of WWI, American workers unhappy with wages and spiralling inflation, launched widespread sometimes violent strikes with the support of growing labor unions. Some of these unions called for government takeover of private industries. For instance, railroad workers called for the national government to take permanent control of the railroad system. The growing waves strikes signalled a period of extreme civil unrest; American citizens became frightened that they would face a revolution similar to the one that had just taken place in Russia. • 37. Concert Admission Essay Sample Music has long been my biggest passion. As a child, it was always around me: Beethoven sonatas and Chopin concerti would fill my house, so much so that I begged my parents to start me on piano. I began the piano at five, but as I grew older, I discovered the beauty of chamber music and the allure of playing in an orchestra, compelling me to start on the clarinet. Since then, I have developed a love for performance. Onstage, I feel perfectly at home with the excitement and passion. I strive to make each performance unique in its own right, with my musical ideas summoned by the magical allure of the stage. I am grateful to have had the chance to play at spectacular venues and competitions in Canada, the United States and abroad, and each of these performances that have solidified my goals to become a clarinet soloist and orchestral musician. • 38. ##ymbolism In The Jade Peony By Wayson Choy And The Yellow... Many people are represented by their environment their surroundings reflect their physical well beings regardless of its nature. Literature often manipulates this truth in order to suggest a deeper meaning behind an otherwise mundane facade. The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman are two examples of how symbolism is indicative of a character s physical state. For instance, both the grandma and the bamboo shoots in The Jade Peony perish due to cold weather, and the narrator s sense of freedom and intellectual activity is epitomized within the moonlight in The Yellow Wallpaper. In both short stories, symbolism is used to portray the impending doom on the characters physical state. This idea is clearly presented in The Yellow Wallpaper by the image of the bed being nailed down to the ground and how that reflects her isolation in the room. In the beginning of the story, the narrator despises the room she is confined in. She is stuck in the room day in and day out all day [she] lies here on this great immovable bed it is nailed down (p.337). The significance of the bed being nailed down and immovable plays a great role in the narrator s physical state: it signifies how the narrator is immovable and can not leave the room. Just like the bed, the narrator is hypothetically nailed down to the ground, unable to leave or rather do anything without the permission of her husband. Another example of this takes place in The Jade Peony with the bamboo shoots dying of the cold, just like the grandma. The whole household are strong believers of signs, so after the death of the grandma her son went to her garden to look for a sign. He then looked at the frost killed shoots and cringed: no, that can not be it (p.109). From this point on we are given a hint of how the grandma will die, which is an important detail for further understanding the character s physical state. For instance, while understanding the cold killing the bamboo shoots, the son then realizes that something his mother loved and cared for dearly died of the same way. Overall, the two short stories share the impending doom of the character s physical state through symbolism. Given ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
