Unit1: Basics of Information technology
1. What is a computer?
Ans: Computer is an electronic device. It
accepts data as input, process the data and
displays the result as output.
2. Draw the IPO Cycle (Input, process, output )
process
(i)A.L.U: Arithmatic and logical unit
(ii) M.U: Memory UNIT
(iii)C.U: Control Unit
(iv) c.p.u: Central processing unit
3. What is an input device ? Give some examples
Ans: Input device is a device used to give data
to the computer
Input Output
A.L.U
M.U
C.U
Examples: Keyboard, mouse, joystick, touch
screen, lightpen, Barcode reader, scanner ,
stylus, microphone,MICR(Magnetic Ink
Character Reader) etc.,
4. What is output device? Give some examples.
Ans: Output device is a device used to display
the result from the computer to the user
Examples: Monitor, Printer, Projector,
Speakers,VDU(Visual display units) etc.,
5. Give some examples of storage devices.
Ans: CD,DVD, Pendrive, Floppy disk, Hard
disk etc.,
6. What is Data?
Ans: Data includes facts, figures , symbols and
letters . Which we give from the input devices
7. What is CPU?
Ans: CPU stands for Central processing unit . It is a
device where all the information is stored and
processed. It is the brain of the computer. Internally
it contains three units., (i) Memory Unit (ii) Control
Unit (iii) Arithmatic and Logical unit (ALU)
8. What is a memory?
Ans: Memory is a part of the computer where data,
instructions and programs are stored.
Memory is divided into two
1. Primary memory
2. Secondary Memory
DRAM- DYNAMIC RANDOM ACCESS
MEMORY
SRAM- STATIC RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY
PROM- PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY
MEMORY
EPROM- ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ
ONLY MEMORY
EEPROM- ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE
PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY
9. What is Primary Memory / Volatile Memory?
ANS:Primary Memory also called as volatile
memory because the memory can’t store the data
permanently.
10. What is Secondary Memory / Non Volatile
Memory?
ANS:Secondary memory is external and
permanent memory that is useful to store the
external storage media such as CD,
pendrive,floppy disk, magnetic disks, magnetic
tapes and etc
11. What is a computer Network
Ans:A network is defined as a group of two or
more computer systems linked together.
12. What are the types of computer Networks
Ans: There are many types
of computer networks.
Local-area networks (LANs)
Wide-area networks (WANs)
Campus-area networks (CANs)
Metropolitan-area networks MANs)
Home-area networks (HANs)
12. Difference between wired and Wireless
network
Ans:Wired Network: "wired" is the term refers
to any physical medium consisting of cables. The
cables can be copper wire, twisted pair or fibre
optic. Wired network is used to carry different
forms of electrical signals from one end to the
other.
EXAMPLE : LAN (Local Area Network)
Wireless Network: Wireless" is the term refers to
medium made of electromagnetic waves or
infrared waves. All the wireless devices will have
antenna or sensors.
Example:1.Outdoor cellular technologies such as
GSM, CDMA, LTE, Satellite etc.
2. Indoor wireless technologies such as Wireless
LAN(or WiFi), Bluetooth
