INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER
NETWORKING
GRADE 8 COMPUTER
WHAT IS A COMPUTER NETWORK?
A computer network is a set
of computers connected together for the
purpose of sharing resources.
The most common resource shared today is
connection to the Internet.
Other shared resources can include a printer or a
file server.
The Internet itself can be considered a computer
network.
WHAT IS A COMPUTER NETWORK?
NETWORK GOALS
The main goal of networking is
"Resource sharing", and it is to make
all programs, data and equipment
available to anyone on
the network without the regard to
the physical location of the resource
and the user.
WHAT ARETHE 4TYPES OF NETWORKS?
A computer network is mainly of four
types:
LAN(LocalArea Network)
PAN(Personal Area Network)
MAN(MetropolitanArea Network)
WAN(WideArea Network)
LOCAL-AREA NETWORK (LAN)
A local-area network (LAN) is a
computer network that spans a relatively
small area. Most often, a LAN is confined to a
single room, building or group of buildings,
however, one LAN can be connected to
other LANs over any distance via telephone
lines and radio waves.
LOCAL-AREA NETWORK (LAN)
PERSONAL AREA NETWORK
A personal area network, or PAN, is
a computer network that enables
communication between computer devices
near a person. ...
Examples of wireless PAN, orWPAN, devices
include cell phone headsets, wireless
keyboards, wireless mice, printers, bar code
scanners and game consoles.
PERSONAL AREA NETWORK
METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK
A Metropolitan Area Network is a class
of network which serves a large
geographical area between 5 to 50
kilometers in range. ...
AWAN connects LANs and MAns, with
an example of aWAN being the Internet.
METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK
WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)
A wide area network (WAN) is a
telecommunications network that extends
over a large geographical area for the
primary purpose of computer networking.
Wide area networks are often established
with leased telecommunication circuits.
WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)
HOW DOES A SERVER COMMUNICATE
WITH A CLIENT?
Client and server communication
The client sends a request, and the server returns
a response. This exchange of messages is an
example of inter-process communication.
 To communicate, the computers must have a
common language, and they must follow rules so
that both the client and the server know what to
expect.
HOW DOES A SERVER COMMUNICATE
WITH A CLIENT?
WHAT ARE CLIENT/SERVER APPLICATIONS?
A client/server application is a piece of
software that runs on a client computer and
makes requests to a remote server.
Many such applications are written in high-
level visual programming languages where
UI, forms, and most business logic reside in
the client application.
WHAT ARE CLIENT/SERVER APPLICATIONS?
WHAT IS CLIENT/SERVER APPLICATION
WITH EXAMPLE?
Often clients and servers communicate over a
computer network on separate hardware, but
both client and server may reside in the same
system. ...
Examples of computer applications that use
the client-server model are Email, network
printing, and theWorldWideWeb.
