1. V.M.WESTERBERG’S SUPER BRIEF THEORY SERIES
CHARLES DARWIN
BIOLOGICAL Theory of Development
Charles Darwin’s “Theory of Evolution”
Natural selection and survival of the fittest.
Nature is unforgiving: if individuals do not adapt, they will die.
Darwin observed that prenatal development was extremely similar in all species,
supporting his theory that we are the result of evolution.
Although some consider Darwin’s theory inherently atheistic, many religions see
his theory as a reflection of God’s ongoing engagement in the creation of
something new and improved.
His theory was groundbreaking and elegant, but not without flaws. Darwin
stated that the characteristics of the two parents become physically blended in
their offspring, just as in the mixing of paints, or of gin and tonic (PBS.org,
2006). Variations would be impossible no matter how relevant they might be for
survival. Darwin did not know how traits were passed on or why some were
passed and some not.
Darwin never read the work of his contemporary, biologist and monk Gregor
Mendel. Mendel’s genetic theory explains why and how an adaptive mutation
could spread slowly through a species and never be blended out.
