- Matter is everything that has mass and takes up space, including things you can see or touch as well as things you cannot see like air.
- Atoms are the smallest unit of matter and are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Most things are made up of combinations of just six main elements: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur.
- Matter can exist in three main states - solid, liquid and gas - depending on how close or far apart the atoms and molecules are. Changes between these states involve changes in temperature, pressure or physical processes like melting, boiling, freezing and condensation.
