The autonomic nervous system (ANS) has two divisions - the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions - that have both structural and functional differences. The parasympathetic division is responsible for rest and digestion functions and uses acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter. The sympathetic division prepares the body for fight or flight and uses norepinephrine. Both divisions innervate organs through a dual innervation system where fibers from each division meet at plexuses near target organs.
