Grade Inflation And Elementary Inflation
Grade inflation the belief that students are receiving grades that they haven t worked for and
therefore don t deserve. But what s so wrong about grade inflation? When learning about this topic
we open the doors to a multitude of other problems plaguing our educational system. When looking
at grade inflation, we re able to understand these often forgotten about and looked over problems,
which enables us to start taking steps forward towards a brighter educational future. When
researching the topic of gradeinflation, one begins to detect a multitude of problems, such as the
effects it holds on the students and teachers, and the deflating value of grades themselves. These
issues have been long ignored and continue to disrupt our educational system. Mark Oppenheimer
shares the same point of view in his article, There s Nothing Wrong With GradeInflation, where he
discussed his opinion, that grade inflation is one of the much lesser issues and that we need to
focus on more pressing matters. Meanwhile, others such as Rojstaczer hold strong counter
arguments. He argues that grade inflation is becoming an out of control issue that we should focus
on fixing. In the past colleges like Princeton and Wellesley have tried to adopt policies to help curb
grade inflation. Even though it lowered the percentages of high grades, effectively lowering the
amount of grade inflation, it came with unforeseen consequences that affected the students and
staff. In his article

Ostrom s Privatization Definition
Overall, Ostrom is critical of Hardin s approach in dealing with over exploited common resources
such privatization and government regulation. She is critical of the inflexibility of Hardin s model
and its pessimistic outlook for the future (Ostrom et al., 1999). Moreover, it has become evident
that common pool resources, such as overfishing, are difficult to address. Ostrom, argues that for
the past two decades the approaches taken to address common pool resources, many following
Hardin s model, have not been successful in addressing negative externalities and in some cases
have induced further damages (Ostrom,2008). One of the arguments Ostrom would make would be
against privatization and government regulation of fisheries. Ostrom, makes clear that privatization
of open access resources is often inefficient (Ostrom et al., 1999).... Show more content on

Privatization would address these issues on a broad scale with standard regulations that would not
take into consideration underlying conflict experienced by the poorer users of the common
resource (Ostrom et al., 1999). Instead, management of these resources should be site specific,
where some fishery communities would benefit from self organized monitoring and implementation
(Ostrom et al., 1999). For instance, the government intervention for northern cod in Canadian
waters had a disproportionate impact on local fishers, who established local rules, yet government
intrusion caused a collapse to the fishery market and outside fishers didn t suffer the consequences
as heavily as the locals, causing higher poverty rates and unemployment (Ostrom,

Old Earth Creationism Research Paper
As stated previously stated old earth creationism is a form of creationism that is based off of the
contents of Genesis and does use scientific theories to support itself. The main idea of old earth
creationism is that just about everything that happened in Genesis from the Bible is true, but
while it is true it is not completely accurate or even in the correct order. What this means is that
while Genesis does say everything happens over the course of a week or a seven day period, it does
not specify how long a day is. This means that a day could be anywhere from one hundred and
sixty eight hours to a few million years. If each day in Genesis is a few million years then that
would mean that the bible does partially agree with the big bang theory.... Show more content on

In Genesis in the Bible, the order in which the universe and everything that lives in it was created
started when God said the phrase Let there be light! and continued with the creation of the seas
and the creation of dryland after this God created plants and trees, then he created the sun and
moon. Next he began creating life, he began with the animals of the sea and the animals of the air,
after this he created land animals, and finally he created human beings. Logically this does not
make sense because it states the God created light, plants, and trees before he created the stars, this
is where old earth creationism comes into place, but this was already stated in the previous
paragraph, why this is being mentioned is that old earth creationism also relates to how life in the
universe was created. While the events that took place in Genesis relating to the creation of life
are believable, the only problem is how long it took God to create all the life in the universe and
the fact that a fishes, birds, land animals, and humans could not have each spontaneously appeared,
this is why old earth creationism was mentioned again. Not only does old earth creationism relate to
this, but also evolution. As stated in one of the previous

Analysis Of Green Day By George W. Bush
Art is an essential form of protest in a time of crisis or for political or social reforms. George W.
Bush is one of the most controversial presidents in history and prompted some of the loudest
outcries from the public. The music world became very involved in this particular fight, many
artists from multiple generations and genres protested Bush. American Idiotby Green Day is one of
the best examples and the most well known protest of Bush and his administration. However,
despite its popularity and acclaim it did receive a lot of criticism. Going against such a powerful
and influential person in society, the band subjected themselves to the possibility of censorship by
the media and accusations of being unpatriotic. Another uproar was... Show more content on

Green Day felt the weight of the darkness that covered the country during Bush s first
term...They found a voice in an era that was disorienting for many (D Ambrosio, Green Day
Never Gives Up ). Although the album did not stop Bush s re election, it was both a harbinger
and beneficiary of the Bush administration s plummeting approval, selling steadily through 2005
(Pareles, Jon. The Morning After American Idiot. ). American Idiot sold 267000 copies in the
US and was number 1 on multiple chains, like Billboard s top 100. It received the Grammy
Award for Best Rock Album in 2005, Favorite Pop/Rock Album in 2005 at the American Music
Awards, Best International Album in 2006 at the BRIT Awards, and won and was nominated for
multiple other awards. The awards, critical acclaim, and general popularity amongst the public
shows that a quality record that contains a well thought out message can still appeal to a broad
market (Newman, A Smart Start For Green Day ). Green Day maintains the idea of being punk
insurgents, rebellious musicians who push boundaries and more closely align with teenage angst
rather than adults. In spite of their reputation, Green Day was criticized by fans of going sappy,
especially in regards Wake Me Up When September Ends which was centered around the profound
effect the death of his father had on Armstrong. In their video for Wake Me Up When September
Ends, Green Day exploits their watchers emotions to gain

Police Enforcement And The Law Enforcement
What is law enforcement? The term has different meanings for individuals in our society based on
personal experiences. Law enforcement officers are members of society that come together in an
organized fashion and enforce the law. Law enforcement officers enforce the law by deterring,
punishing individuals and rehabilitating them. Law enforcement officers have been a part of our
society since the beginning of our democracy. Law enforcement officers are public servants to the
public to maintain peace in our society. Is this the case? In recent years, individuals have felt how
law enforcement agencies treat minorities. With the on growing population of minorities in the
United States, communities are becoming more diverse in policeagencies. Should police agencies
be a representation of the communities they serve? When individuals picture a law enforcement
officer they tend to get the image of a white male officer. Individuals hardly or do not see
minority, gender officers in police agencies. In our history, law enforcement officer have always
been one certain race and individuals have accepted this way of order up until recent years.
Many minorities or genders do not apply to police agencies for several factors or barriers it brings
to them. Several factors that play a role in the diversity in police agencies are communities, fear,
barriers within the agencies (promotions, work environment), and culture of our society. Society
has made the image of law enforcement look bad,

‒What is it?
An imaginary sphere of infinite extent with the earth at its center and on which the stars, planets,

‒My comment? What does it mean to me?
The stars occupy fixed positions on the surface of this celestial sphere , and the Earth rotates
within it. This is obviously not the case in real life but it is a good model because this is pretty
much how things look from our point of view.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Casting Making
Casting is one of the earliest manufacturing process. It is the first step in making most of the
materials.
Steps: Making mould cavity Material is first liquefied by properly heating it in a suitable furnace.
Liquid is discharged into a prepared mould cavity allowed to solidify product is taken out of the
mould cavity, trimmed and made to shape
We should focus on the following for successful castingoperation:
(i) Constructing of moulds of patterns

The Mall Of New Jersey
This first time I remember walking through the mall in New Jersey I was a little girl holding my
mother s hand. This mall is a dismal place, with one level and one major department store on
each end. The elongated brown brick walls made me feel like I am walking into a dungeon, into
the land of the abyss. It was not a joyous place for a child to visit. On one occasion, my mother
brought me an ice cream cone and with one lick it was on the floor. I never saw my mother so
mad before; she picked up the ice cream and demanded I receive another one. Little did I know
that this dark dreary space was going was my future place of employment. The mall was not a
place I hung out at as a teenager, first, it was too far and second we had a downtown to shop.
While I was away at school they remodeled the mall and expanded the space into a mega palace
to include four levels of bright lights, white walls, shining floors, glass elevator and a skylight.
The mall added a movie theater, bookstore, hair salons, restaurants, food court, computer stores,
post office, and fitness center, just to name a few minor changes. I was speechless, walking
around the same mall as I did as a child with amazing like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. The
mall played two major points in my life, the time I spent with my mother as a child trying on
clothes wishing we could afford to buy and my job working in cosmetics saleswoman in a major
department store. As a consequence of the mall, local boutiques and mom

Rule Of Law And Development
Rule of Law and Development
A Mutual Reinforcement
Executive Summary
The Post 2015 development agendas which are often called as the next generation MDGs includes
Rule of Law, one of the most crucial component of development around the world. Precisely for
developing countries like Bangladesh, the fragile state of rule of Law and access to justice
implicates the downward situation of development, especially from the human rights perspective.
This paper will analyze the sources, nature and elements of rule of law as well as development and
scrutinize the nexus between these two. In light of realistic experiences around the world, this
paper will try to find whether the implementation of rule of law practically substantiates the goals
of sustainable development. At the same time, the situation of Bangladesh as well as the possible
way outs will also be highlighted.

Are Tasers Safe
The invention that revolutionized law enforcement was later the most hated weapon on the market.
Tasers send thousands of electric volts through the human body, which undoubtedly stops the body
from moving forward. Taser International introduced the M26 and X26 to save lives, rather than
using a lethal weapon like a gun. The tasertemporarily shocks the body, which helps the policeforce
take the suspect into custody. The documentary, Killing Them Safely, is about the accusations of
Taser International s tasers killing people when they said it was safe. However, if used correctly,
tasers are the safer way to execute police enforcement as well as defend one s self. (What other

On August 9, 2016, a young, black, 18 year old, named Michael Brown, was shot and killed by a
white policeman in Ferguson, Missouri. There had been a robbery that night, which had two
black males as suspects. The police thought Brown had matched the description and cornered
him until other officers arrived on the scene. Brown had made a run on foot after being grazed
by a bullet in the thumb. After this event, the whole case is based on witnesses. Some witnesses
say that Brown has surrendered and put his hands up, which ended up with him being shot.
Others say he had just started walking toward the officer and then got shot. The policeman is
still unaware if he is guilty or innocent, but what if he had used a taser rather than a gun? If he
were to use a taser, Brown would have most likely dropped to the ground and the police would
have taken him into custody. This could have prevented the raids that happened only a year
after Brown had died. Tasers are used to save lives that are both innocent and guilty. All police
have to make split second decisions when in a dangerous situation. If they were to make the
wrong one, there are major consequences for the mistakes made. Depending on the situation,
and how serious it is, a taser can be used to save a life and a wrong decision. When used correctly
for only five seconds of shock, there is little to no injuries to the suspect. There is more of a risk of
the police losing the job, then there is the suspect being not

George Stein s Role At Eastern Diary Essay
George Stein grew up in the suburbs of a major East Coast city. Inevitably, every summer
between school semesters George likes to work so he can continue he interest saturated lifestyle
which includes showing his girlfriend, Cathy, around to fun events and spending money on his
love of hot rods. This semester, after his freshmen year at college, George managed to secure
himself a comfortable union job which offers overtime and a paycheck far larger than he could
have ever received any previous summer. George s new role at Eastern Diary situated him on
the nightshift team where there were no managers, just a team leader, Paul, who everyone on
the shift looked to for direction. Although Paul and the nightshift crew held a sense of
responsibility for getting their work done, the visible artifacts of horseplay tended to supersede
the overall company s element of culture which includes the safety of the employees and
customers. Their role was to follow the production order of ice cream handed to Paul by the day
shift s superintendent. One night in particular, George found the ice cream production line halted
by maggots clogging up the piping. On an occasion in certain bags of ingredients, likely those of
which were left and forgotten, maggots would get in. In order to save the company money, finish
the shift on time and on order, Paul advised George to release the filters and effectively let the
maggots into the ice cream. Staring down the filters of ice cream and

The Swimmer
The Swimmer
The Swimmer was originally a short story written by John Cheever. The story on the surface is
about a wealthy man named Ned Merrill who decides to swim home to his wife Lucinda and two
daughters using a string of swimming pools. However, when he arrives home he comes to an
empty house. Using an in depth analysis, it is revealed that his journey is actually his decline in
status, and effects of alcoholism. Ultimately it could be argued that the story shows the dangers of
wealth and alcoholism. Ned Merrill s wealth has stripped him of a purpose and as a result he finds
thrills in distractions, such as affairs, or he creates false purposes. The greatest false purpose he
conjures is when he decides to swim home. Throughout the ... Show more content on

insignificant people shows his disconnection. However, with Kevin he takes a brief moment to
connect with the boy. Kevin reveals to Ned his inability to swim well and in response Ned builds
his confidence by indulging in pretend swimming. This moment reveals Ned s humanity. The
audience believes the moment is fleeting because once they reach the end of the pool Ned reverted
back to wanting to complete his goal instead of staying there to play with boy. However, Ned s

The Financial Data Of Publicly Traded Company Essay
An organizational leader, one with familiarity of financial statements and their impact on the
business as a whole, has an opportunity to play a vital role in his or her position. The purpose of
this paper is to collect, sort, and report on the financial data of publicly traded company. This is

both the company s business and financial health is also included in this paper. Without further ado,

walking 13 miles in one day on the streets of New York City. Not only are these boots still worn
today, so also is a rain parka purchased in 1999. An interesting point to consider is that many of
these items are purchased in outlet stores or as seconds . Personal experience with this brand aside,

Not-For-Profit Organisation
Having never directly worked for a not for profit organisation before, I was not sure what exactly
to expect. However, I had some preconceptions. Logically speaking, I assumed a not for profit
organisation would have far less resources, for lack of a better word, be disorganised; given the
reliance on a pool of volunteers rather than salaried employees. Furthermore, I expected to receive
minimal supervision and/or training as I appreciated that my supervisor s time was extremely
valuable. After having spent 3 days at Amnesty International Australia ( AIA ), I would argue that
my assumptions have thus far proven correct. Having worked in large corporate organisations
such as Deloitte and the QBE Insurance Group, the contrast in resources could not be starker.
Furthermore, my supervisor often lacked time to run me through all the tasks she wanted me to
do. For example, on the first day she had to cut the orientation short because of an urgent call. On
the second day, she was busy introducing a University of Sydney student. An on the third day, she
was not present for most of the morning because of a meeting. Despite all this, I am enjoying my

Watching Tv Makes You Smarter Analysis
Watching T.V. Makes You Smarter by Steven Johnson Watching TV, has a strong possibility to
make you smarter depending on what you are watching and if you are actually paying attention to
the plot. Steven is trying to show everyone that watching TV play a major part in our lives today
and the benefits is that it makes you smarter. When you are watch interesting intelligence brain
stimulating shows like 24, The West Wing, and ER. He argues, that these shows combine the
complicated plot threads of soap opera with realistic characters and important social issues of night

Iraq War A Pragmatist
Unfortunately, the hawks views and previous actions in which they prevented the U.S. from
agreeing with or joining multilateral groups triggered a firestorm among foreign and domestic
critics. To differentiate, the pragmatists, or constructive realists, believed that the U.S. goals would
be better achieved by working within the post 1945 institutional framework that they had helped to
build. They knew that a unilateral military campaign would do irreparable damage to U.S. long
term interests, and that the results would be problematic. The United Stateswould be in a stronger
position to deal with Iraq if it had carefully built up international support the pragmatists accepted

joined bush in multilateral action against Iraq, there would ve been guaranteed outside help for
post war reconstruction. In addition to that, because Congress risky sentiment was strongly in
favor of prior congressional authorization for any military action, going to the U.N. shared and
balanced control and over the situation. And it wasn t only congress who was feeling pressured to
act aggressively. The Democrats were uncomfortable with being called dovish, so they were
reluctant to oppose military action too ardently. Summed up, it seemed that many people were not
in the proper mental state to take such a critical decision. I think they were too ready to jump into
war without a second thought. So the U.N. would be able to detect and influence those thoughts to
a more calm route and try to prevent war, although it ended up unsuccessful.
I do think that the United States specifically was a different case from the other five great powers
in this time period. The U.S. had just experienced one of its worst terrorist attacks in history. So it
had its guard up for sure, unlike the other countries, who either were used to the terrorist issues or
had not yet dealt with an attack similar to that of

Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
Executive Summary
CIA Central Intelligence Agency
Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is centered on the same basic principles as the Office
of Strategic Services (OSS) in the 1940 s but with some significant changes, specifically in its
organization and methods. The OSS, the world s first global intelligence organization, was
organized and overseen by Wild Bill Donovan and expanded at an unprecedented pace throughout
World War II. The OSS was the foundation for today s CIA. It was because of the successes and
failures of the OSS that the CIA has been able to grow and develop.
As is made clear by the detailed descriptions of Bill Donovan s routine and procedures in the
biography Wild Bill Donovan by Douglas Waller, the leadership and management of the CIA today
is drastically different from the original OSS. Donovan was appointed by FDR, in the same way
the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency is today. Yet Donovan s duties were extremely vague
and up to interpretation, including performing unspecified supplementary activities for the
president. While the overall mission of the CIA today is open ended which means it needs only the
approval of the National Security Council to embark on new, possibly unprecedented missions, the

$46million from then President Eisenhower (1955) to build they headquarters in Langley,
Virginia. In 1961 the CIA helped support the invasion of Cuba by providing the Cuban exiles with
weapons and training. During the Cold War the CIA played the biggest role in counter espionage

The Report On A Fictional Blog Post
1.Summary
This report is analysing a fictional blog post.
Evidence to support anthropogenic climate change will be discussed.
Defence mechanisms that the author possibly uses will be evaluated.
This report will explain why the author of the blog is making the claims by explaining the ideas
surrounding conspiracy theories.
2.Introduction
The author of the blog post begins by describing two items in the news which they describe as
worrying . Firstly, the announcement of treble subsidies for so called green energy, which the
author explicitly links to the second point that a university has confirmed global warming is
happening, due to carbon emissions. The author expresses how this is suspicious as evidence to

Evidence to support
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) uses scientist from across the globe to
provide detailed information on the dangers that human activity has on the world s climate. The
planet is getting warmer due to the growth of emissions, such as methane and carbon dioxide
(Adams, 2015). To support this the graph below illustrates how surface temperatures have risen
dramatically in recent years (Kerr, 2006).
3.Defence mechanisms
Psychologists have sought to understand why individuals seem to hide away from information
about environmental issues. People generally become anxious when they encounter different
emotions, change or are challenged with undesirable ideas, to combat this defence mechanisms are
triggered (Adams, 2015). It is believed that there are nine different types of defence mechanisms,
which are:
Denial: claiming that environmental problems do not exist (Adams, 2015), or that there is no real
threat.
Repression: disregarding any knowledge about environmental harm caused by humans.
Regression: having firm or overstated beliefs in leaders or experts to resolve environmental
problems as there is nothing the individual can do. Additionally, anger towards the risk of
privileges be revoked due to environmental issues.
Displacement: to avoid anxiety small steps are taken, instead of recognising the actual changes that
are required.

Ipod Compare And Contrast
In the last 50 plus years, society has been changed tremendously as new inventions and innovations
have emerged. In my experiences, there are two noteworthy items that have a pronounced place in
this catalog. As a teenager in the early 21st century, I have an abundance of experience with both of
these inventions. Today s modern televisions are a product of evolution and improvement, and that
the iPod is relatively new to society there are a lot of differences between the two. Such as ways
information is broadcasted, target demographics, and their separate functions. On the contrary, they
also are popular forms of entertainment and share some similar functions.
A major difference between the two household items, today is how they retrieve the information
they use to compute and display. Televisions receive signals broadcast to them from stations

How the Charcters in the Great Gatsby Viewed Jay Gatsby
TOM Tom thinks of Gatsby as a home wrecker and a criminal. He cannot see any of Gatby s
virtues, but rather focuses on and exaggerates his questionable behavior (pursuing Daisy and
bootlegging). Nick, on the other hand, sees both Gatsby s virtues and faults and presents them to
the reader from a neutral point of view. Who is Gatsby anyhow? demanded Tom suddenly. Some
big bootlegger? (PG 104) This quote reveals Tom s suspicions of Gatsby s wealth. Even though
Tom doesn t know that Gatsby is involved in organized crime when he says this, he doubts the fact
that he earned his wealth legitimately. Self Control! repeated Tom incredulously. I suppose the

Mr.Gatz s reasons to be proud of his son are proven to the reader. Mr.Gatz repeatedly states that
Gatsby was meant to be great. DAISY Daisy viewed Gatsby as a tool in which she could use to
get back at her cheating husband with, but without damaging her wealthy lifestyle. Nick,
however, saw Gatsby as a friend and didn t try to use him for his own personal gain. Daisy
would have gone along with the plan of leaving Tom and marrying Gatsby if she had never
found out that he was involved with organized crime. She realized that it might lower her social
status if people found out about Gatsby s proffesion as a bootlegger. They re such beautiful
shirts, she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. It makes me sad because I ve never seen
such such beautiful shirts before. (PG.89). For Daisy the shirts represent wealth. When Daisy
starts to cry into the shirts, she is displaying her interest in materialism. She doesn t cry because
she has been reunited with Gatsby, but rather because of the pure satisfaction all his pricey
possessions brings her. Daisy realizes that she can replace Tom with Gatsby, thereby keeping her
wealthy life and getting back at Tom for having an affair with Myrtle. You resemble the
advertisement of the man, she went on innocently. You know the advertisement of the man. (PG,

Roof Replacement
Determining whether or not a home needs a new roof is not difficult. Homeowners simply have to
look for clues that alert them to issues. When it comes to Roof Replacement Ft Worth residents
just have to look for these clues, call in a professional company such as Greystone Roofing to
check out the roof. They can inspect the roofto see if an entire roof is needed, or if the roof that s on
the roof can be repaired.
Repair or replace
If a few shingles have blown off during a storm, or if there s a small leak in one area, replacing is
an economical option. It also makes the most sense. After all, why incur the expense of installing a
new roof if there are only a couple of shingles that need to be replaced.
In some cases one section of a roof may be damaged. Perhaps, a tree limb has fallen on an area of
the roof which resulted in damage to 1/4 of the roof. This is another time when repairing may be
the more favorable option. However, if the roof is older and will need replacing soon many
homeowners opt for Roof Replacement Ft Worth homeowners choose replacement over repair on
older roofs in order to save money in the long run. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Cherokee Indians Essay
The Cherokee Indians
The American Indian History in the Eastern part of the country is always associated with the
Cherokee Indian nation. The Cherokee s were by far the largest and most advanced of the tribes
when Europeans first arrived and came in contact with Native Americans. There are too many
tribes to go over background on every one of them, so I m going to focus on the Cherokee s since
many of their ways and customs are so similar to all the other tribes in the East.
When Europeans first arrived in North America, the Cherokees occupied a large expanse of
territory in the Southeast. Their homeland included mountains and valleys in the southern part of
the Appalachian Mountain chain. Their

The Cherokees practiced a variety of crafts, including basketwork and stamped pottery. They also
carved, out of woods and gourds, masks representing good and evil spirits. These masks were used
during their many hunting, agricultural and healing rituals. They held these ceremonies at key
times of the year, such as harvest time.
Each village was run by two chiefs. The White Chief, or Most Beloved Man helped the villagers
make decisions concerning farming, lawmaking, and disputes between individuals, families, or
clans. He also played a large role in religious ceremonies. The Red Chief gave advice concerning
warfare. One such decision was choosing who would be the War Woman, an honored woman
chosen to accompany braves on their war parties. The War Woman did not fight, but helped feed
the men, offered them council, and decided which prisoners would live or die. The Red Chief was
also in charge of the lacrosse games which were called
quot;little wars. quot; Lacrosse was played within tribes and against other tribes. It is one of the
first known friendly competitions between Indian tribes.
Hernando de Soto was the first European explorer to come into contact with the Cherokees, when
he arrived in their territory in 1540. The Europeans were very impressed with the highly advanced
cultures.

Rhetorical Pathos In Never Cry Wolf By Farley Mowat
What do you think of wolves? Do you think they re blood thirsty killers, or do you think they are
rather friendly animals? In the book, Never Cry Wolf, (1963) the author, Farley Mowat, writes
about his excursion to the sub arctic Barren Lands of Canada to study how wolves act and how
the community is being affected by the wolves. The people of Churchill lead Mowat to believe
the wolves are something that they aren t, which is a blood thirsty killer. Mowat then uses the
rhetorical strategy Pathos throughout the book to show you how he personifies the wolves and
how fear is all in our minds. Pathos represents an appeal to the emotions of the audience. Mowat
uses this rhetorical strategy to get us to feel the emotions that he felt. When arriving in
Churchill, Mowat says that he discovered that although wolves reputedly devour several people
in the Arctic Zone every year, they will always refrain from attacking a pregnant eskimo (24). In
Chapter 4 When is a Wolf Not a Wolf?, Mowat shares his fear. He hears howling in the distance
and quickly hides saying I found myself wishing I were a pregnant eskimo (42). Although this is
funny, it made me feel fear for Mowat because of Churchill s rumors that you would be eaten. It
turns out the howling was just huskies which led Mowat to the realization that maybe everything
that the people said isn t true. A couple chapters later in Chapter 7 The Watcher Watched, Mowat
learned that maybe wolves aren t savage killers and maybe just the opposite of that. This lesson
was learned when Mowat was out searching for the wolves and they were behind him the whole
time. A struck of shock lit Mowat up when he realized that the wolves had any chance to attack him
and they didn t, instead they sat quietly and observed Mowat. This sent fear through me because it
led Mowat to new ideas which means he s going to put more trust into the wolves and go right into
it with an open mind. From Chapter 7 on, the whole perspective changes. Personification is the
attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the
representation of an abstract quality in human form. To get you attached to the wolves, Mowat
personifies them. This mostly starts in Chapter 9

Roman Culture And The Roman Empire
Roman Culture
The Roman Empire is among the greater ancient civilizations known to man. In 753 B.C. Rome at
one point consisted of The Rhine River to Egypt and from Asia Minor to Britain accumulating
some 2 millions square miles. This essay goes over some of their culture and the great strides
made throughout 753 BC to 27 BC and from 64 AD to 1453 A.D.
I. Military
The Roman military focused on teamwork and making their soldiers brave throughout their
training. The Equitatus played a major role in legionary tactics. The Romans military was far
more superior and successful than any other army for a thousand years. Over many centuries the
Romans dominated the world which brought most of Europe, northern Africa, and the Middle
East under their rule. The only way to obtain citizenship was to serve in the Roman military and
basically get what we call an honorable discharge nowadays. The Army didn t allow marriage
until Cladius came to power in 10 B.C. The military frowned upon being married even after
Cladius. Roman tactics and advanced weaponry was extremely influential to their success. They
had tremendously brutal heavy cavalry called Franks and Lombards. They also came out with a
genius design of an advanced cross bow that was far more accurate than that of an average archer.
II. Architecture
One of the biggest advances in architecture during Ancient Rome was definitely their water systems.
The Roman Empire had extensive aqueducts that carried a vast quantity of water to

This Side of Paradise and The Great Gatsby Essay
F. Scott Fitzgerald s writings largely focus on the American aristocracy during the 1920s. The 20s
became alternatively known as the Jazz Age, a term coined by Fitzgerald with connotations
encompassing the prosperity, frivolity, and decadence of the upper class. The atmosphere and
mindset of lavish excess are preserved in the plots and characters of Fitzgerald s writings.
Although Fitzgerald s protagonists are wealthy, there is a noticeable distinction between those who
come from old money and those who are considered new money . Amory Blaine, of This Side of
Paradise, and Jay Gatsby, of The Great Gatsby, exemplify this difference.

With striking similarity in both appearance and personality, it seems that Amory has inherited from
his mother every trait, except the stray inexpressible few, that made him worthwhile (3). Fitzgerald
is pointing out the meaningless of the trappings of the upper class. Although Amory and Beatrice
are rich and beautiful, these traits do not make them worthwhile. It is the characteristics that Amory
develops on his own, without Beatrice s influence, that redeem him.
Gatsby, on the other hand, develops into the person he is by recognizing the kind of person he
does not want to be a bourgeois, like his parents. He rejects them as shiftless and unsuccessful
farm people (The Great Gatsby 104) and yearns to move up from the middle class he is born

The three regional colonies which are New England, the Middle Colonies and the Southern
Colonies did not exactly merge by the outbreak of the revolution because of distinct ethnic grouping
that existed in Americas at the time. Immigration to the Americas began in the seventeenth century
with England being the primary source of immigration, however, it was not until the eighteenth
century that thousands of people from continental Europe fled their homes to the new territory to

The Industrial Revolution Of The Green Revolution
Introduction
To date, historical evidence, from the industrial revolution to the green revolution, show that
agriculture growth has long been the engine of development. This idea has long helped promoting
the capitalist agriculture transition as the only path to rise resident s income (Zhang, et al., 2015)
in order to get people out of poverty. Accordingly, many started celebrating the global rise in
incomes as a success of those policies while the lagging in Africa showed the undermined
inequalities and marginalisation of the most vulnerable categories. Yet, the specificity in Africa is,
today, getting more and more attention as it shows not only the persistence of poverty but a high
concentration in rural areas.
Accordingly, the starting point of this paper is that agriculture growth is definitely necessary but the
management of the transition process and the understanding of the past and the initial
interconnected conditions lead to different path and development patterns beyond the polarized
debate between traditional as pro poor and the advanced as urban bias. To do so, firstly a study of
the different global patterns of poverty, where it is concentrated, who are the poor and the resulting
social relations is needed. Afterwards, the concept of initial conditions will be explored with a focus
on the role of the initial technical investment in shaping the urban bias development patterns.
Finally, the two previous conditions will be explored with a political economic

Music From Its Lyrics, Beats, And The Artist
Music from its lyrics, beats, and the artist itself has an ambiguous connection the color of the
skin of its listeners. For years, music was an alternative form of segregation and even corruption.
Although Music has been around for centuries, the development and origin of certain genres are
still being a challenge. During the time of segregation and integration times were tough It took
both races a while to adjust to the abundant change of equality for all. One of the tools that helped
ease this transition was music. Music had the strong ability to touch all types of people, of all
ages of all skin tones. Musicians like Chuck Berry the Famous group The Beatles was able to bring

community segregated from whites and even poor black Berry grew up around music and
technically was considered to have a well up bring. This upbringing, time period, and, of course,
his skin altered the way he views music. Of course growing up listening to blues and, of course,
experiencing the hardship of racism and inequality the development of R B risen. Berry did,
however, run into trouble as a teenager he and his friends were arrested for multiple things.
After being released, Berry realized he lacked education and now had a prison record.. He
slowly fell in love with music again; furthermore, during the Mid 1900s Berry started a band.
Berry revitalized the band and introduced upbeat country numbers into the band s repertoire of
jazz and pop music. Berry managed to achieve crossover appeal with white youths without
alienating his black fans by mixing blues and R B sounds with storytelling that spoke to the
universal themes of youth. In the late 1950s, songs such as Johnny B. Goode, Sweet Little
Sixteen and Carol all managed to crack the Top 10 of the pop charts by achieving equal
popularity with youths on both sides of the racial divide. I made records for people who would
buy them, Berry said. No color, no ethnic, no political I don t want that, never did. Berry became

Freedom Rider Case
The respite from violent resistance was fleeting because soon after the Greyhound was burned, the
Trailways bus arrived at the Anniston Terminal and eight Klansmen promptly boarded the bus and
proceeded to beat the passengers. The Freedom Riders were attacked once again later on that same
day at the Birmingham terminal where they were beaten by another white mob armed with bats,
clubs, and pipes. This time the bus was burned because the local police, under the direct order of
the Commissioner of Public Safety Eugene Bull Connor, were late arriving to the terminal.
Violence continued to escalate as the Freedom Riders were once again beaten and this time John

James Farmer even admitted to this when he said: we planned the Freedom Rides with the
specific intention of creating a crisis. This was a necessary action on the part of CORE and the
Freedom Riders because, despite his billing as an ally of the civil rights movement during his
1960 campaign, John F. Kennedy was a reluctant to act on the difficult issue of civil rights and
chose to focus more heavily on foreign relations. As William Chafe puts it, until about 1962 no
one could ever accuse John Kennedy of having been ahead of his time on civil rights. During his
first year in office, he was correctly perceived by most Southern political leaders as a moderate
on the issue of civil rights. Thanks to protests like the Freedom Rides, the Kennedys were forced
to pay more attention to the evolving crisis in the South. Robert Kennedy was at first
unsympathetic to the Freedom Riders whom he regarded as troublemakers who were damaging
JFK s image right before he was to meet Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna. However,
upon witnessing the brutish violence carried out against the Freedom Riders and their commitment
to non violent resistance, Kennedy had no choice but to step in and help protect the Freedom
Riders. Once Robert Kennedy got involved, he took steps to ease the Freedom Riders plight and
ordered the Interstate Commerce

Baptist Churches Essay
Baptist Churches Calvary Baptist Church, that s the name of the church I recently attended, and
although it was a lot different from my own catholic faith, I enjoyed it very much. The Pastor,
Sergio Reyes, started out the service with an opening prayer which led us into a hymn about
America and how wonderful our country is. Most of the songs we sang were about America,
considering the fact that Independence Day was right around the corner. After a few songs and a
few prayers Pastor Reyes got up to deliver his sermon, or message as he liked to put it. The
message was one that hit me kind of hard, he was telling us how the majority of Americans don t
like to hear the truth, mainly because the truth hurts. He was also saying how we, as... Show more

Because of their belief in a general atonement these believers were know as General Baptists. A
second group of Baptists began during the 1630s they were known as the Jacob Lathrop Jessey
church, named for its first three pastors: Henry Jacob (1563 1624), John Lathrop (1653), and
Henry Jessey (1601 1663). They were known as particular Baptists because of their belief that
Christ died for a particular group of people the elect chosen out of gods mercy before the
foundation of the world. They also believed that all people were born in total depravity worthy
only of complete damnation by a just and righteous God. Yet God, in mercy, had elected some
individuals to salvation unconditionally, a result of Gods sovereign choice, not because of any
merit in the individual believer. All the elect would be saved through Gods irresistible grace and
would persevere in Christian discipleship until the end. Therefore Christ death on the cross was
particular to the elect and did not apply to the entire human race. Thus by the 1640s there were two
distinguishable and diverse groups of Baptists in England. Each using a common set of practices
but presenting totally different theological ideals. By the 1650s another group of Baptists had
appeared in England. These Baptists were known as Seventh Day Baptists because they insisted that
Saturday was the divinely

The Fight Against Poverty Around The World
One of the most important steps in the fight against poverty around the world is the creation of
jobs. The most competitive and successful in this direction is the social entrepreneurship. The task
of the social enterprises is to contribute to the solving of the social problems and promoting of the
people s livelihood. Social enterprises provide jobs for hundreds of thousands of people in the
various fields: food production, marketing, credit, insurance, and transportation. The social
enterprises open a variety of employment opportunities for the people with disabilities,
marginalized groups, youth, and women. In many countries the social enterprises are working
closely together with the governmental organizations, both at national and local level. Today,
entrepreneurs and enterprises with social responsibility around the world receive support from the
non profit organizations, foundations, governments, and individuals. However, despite the fact that
the benefits of social entrepreneurship are clear to many, there are many difficulties with its
development. There is still not reached a consensus on what social enterpriseis and who can be
called a social entrepreneur. Some believe that the term social entrepreneur must refer only to the
founding organizations, the main source of income of which is the payment of their clients. Others
believe that the social entrepreneur is one who performs work on the government contracts, and still
others believe the social

The Context Of Growing Economic Interdependence
This paper will endeavour to explore the context of growing economic interdependence
(globalisation); inequality is both growing within and between nations. In turn, analysing the
following the following statement that Inequality can undermine economic, social and perhaps
even political stability. It can tear the very fabric that holds society together. We now have firm
evidence that a severely skewed income distribution harms the pace and sustainability of growth
over the longer term. The growing gap between the rich and poor is now at its highest levels due to
wealth disparity, income inequality and education. Reference to the term the gap between the rich
and the poor also refers to inequality among groups in society as well as countries and is related to
equality in opportunity and outcomes. Although there is no standard in measuring the gap between
the rich and poor, indicators such as wealth disparity, income and education are threats to the
growth of economies. The debate on whether the gap is widening between the rich and poor; it is
important to understand what causes inequality. For example: whether inequality exists because of
opportunity, in other words, those that cannot access education. For those opposing the debate on
the widening gap between the rich and poor note that individuals who work hard and receive a
higher income are not market failures, that in fact, higher wages are important in encouraging more
effort and thus by rewarding hard work there

5Critical Factor Analysis
5.1Critical Factors of Marriott s Global Success
5.1.1High Brand Recognition
Marriott is well known for its strong brand portfolio in all the major markets around the world,
through its luxury brand like Marriott Hotels Resorts, and mid priced brands like Courtyard. As
global communication increases, these highly recognized brands are definitely the first choice for
many businessmen and travellers, for their global reputation and guaranteed quality.
5.1.2Technical Factor
Marriott adopts a series of technical programs to support its customer service. One of them is
Marriott s Automated Reservation System for Hotel Accommodations (MARSH), which include a
database of all its customers around the world.2 When a guest enters the Marriott in New York, the
system recognizes that she stayed in Courtyard Tokyo last month and then she would receive a
personalized service. This way Marriott can provide a better customer service through information
technology, which is better than its competitors.
5.1.3Economy Factor
The hotel industry is highly dependent on the economic scenarios. In the past few years, the fast
developing economy in Asia had strong positive influence on Marriott s globalization. The Asia
Pacific hotels industry grew by 21.7% in 2008 to reach a value of $116.5 billion. 4 While the hotel

Examples Of Alcoholics Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous Carrie Fisher once said, Sometimes you can only find Heaven by slowly
backing away from hell (Brainyqoute) . When reading this quote, it reminded me of someone
trying to bounce their way back from an addiction. People all over the world struggle daily with
an addiction. It can be very heart breaking for some families to watch family members or friends
be taken away from an addictionthey have. Alcoholismis a very common addiction today and has
been for years. In which in other terms, quitting cold turkey is something that can be very hard
to do; especially with no outside support whatsoever. If a person tries to change their alcoholic
ways cold turkey with no help from peers, then the person will end up failing with their attempt
to beat alcoholism. Stephen Wilcox states that Excessive alcohol use kills 88,000 people
annually, and is the third leading lifestyle related cause of death in the Nation (Wilcox). Losing
a loved one because of a fixable problem is so heartbreaking. It can make families and friends
feel broken, because they could ve helped if they would ve known, or they blame themselves and
think how could I have not known. I m sure a lot of you are wondering, what is Alcoholics
Anonymous? Stated on their website, Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men
and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self supporting, multiracial,
apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or

John Gardner and The Art of Fiction Essay
John Gardner and The Art of Fiction
After reading The Art of Fiction by John Gardner, I am definitely more knowledgeable on the
topic of writing fiction than I was before. The first sentence of this book reads, This is a book
designed to teach the serious beginning writer the art of fiction (ix). I believe it does just that and
perhaps much more. The book is divided into two main sections: notes on literary aesthetic theory
and notes on the fictional process. This allows the reader to hear commentary on two very different
views of fiction, thus giving the aspiring writer a well rounded understanding of the subject.
Although a large part of this books deals with the method one uses to write a successful piece of ...

In doing so, he has allowed the amateur to experiment in his or her writing without having to
worry necessarily about whether they are following a proper format or style. This makes the
writing process a lot more fun and relaxing. Furthermore, by describing fiction as more a mode of
thought for writers than a means of entertainment, Gardner has given the process of writing fiction
an intriguing edge that makes it much more exciting for the writer.
Another of the book s highlights is its thorough examination of the many different ways and points
of view from which a piece of fiction can be told. This aspect is especially strong when Gardner
discusses such things as metafiction and deconstruction, two fascinating methods of writing fiction
that are probably not well known among most young writers. In explaining these different kinds of
fiction, Gardner also uses many vivid examples, such as passages from many classical works of
fiction, that help the reader truly understand what is being discussed.
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, there were some aspects of it that I did not
especially care for. The first of these aspects are the sections that are devoted to showing the reader
what errors are commonly made in writing a piece of fiction. Although I do see the value in
showing a student such things as the dangers of using excessive

Mitochondria Case Study
In relation to mitochondria, abnormality in appearance occurred during normal muscle weakness,
and no mitochondria fragments left in a neuron occurred a few weeks before paralysis (Kong and
Xu 1998). Abnormalities in mitochondria were prominent in motor neurons before muscle
weakness began, and the link between mitochondria degeneration and motor neurondeath is the
mutant SOD1 gene. These results showed that mitochondria deterioration is associated with the
beginning of the disease, and SOD1 toxicity is the feature that damages the mitochondria; this is
also related to motor neuron death in the fact that this triggers the deterioration of motor neuron
cells (Kong and Xu 1998). In other words, damage to mitochondria is the center of motor neuron
degeneration. This study explained the physiological steps to muscle weakness in patients with...

2005). This is significant because the location of the gene could have different effects on the
mitochondria and the neuron itself. The experiment used Western blotting as the main method of
completing the study, and used mice as subjects (in vitro and in vivo experiments). The findings
were that SOD1 localizes more in the brain mitochondria than in the liver, and the SOD1 are
inside and on the surface of the mitochondria in the spinal cord (Vijayvergiya et al. 2005). The
results suggest that damage to mitochondria may trigger the start of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,
and this study could provide an insight to the specificity of neuron degeneration. With the fact that
SOD1 was more in the brain and spinal cord than anywhere else, the central nervous system is
affected and the activities of the body are at risk. This analysis intended to discover where mutant
SOD1 combines in the mitochondria of the brain and spinal cord, and how this might contribute to
selective neuron death (Vijayvergiya et al.

Growing Up In Montana 1948
I thank my luck stars for being born in Missoula, Montana on March 2, 1997. A time when
phones didn t rule our lives and no one cared about how many like they got on their Instagram.
Growing up in Montana I never understood what an equine experience my childhood was until I
came to college. I had always thought every kid had spent their summer afternoons romping
through the woods or wreaking havoc in their neighborhoods until the sun set in the west. But
when I would share stories of these times with kids my age and younger I would always be
struck by the same astonished and longing look on their faces, like I was telling them stories out
of a children s book. For many of these kids they grew up in a much different world then me. One

We as a generation are one of the first generations that makes the conscious decision to ignore all
the stereotypes and take people for people. Since we have this larger exposure to different types of
people on social media and through the interwebs, we have a greater perspective on the human
experience. It allows us to see other people s lives in more detail then a quick conversation. We
get a chance to see what they do in there every day lives and we see that even though they have a
different skin color or political views that they are really no different than us. This unique
perspective has been a major benefit for myself in my life. I can think of countless social
situations where I could see someone being hung up by stereotypes or stigmas and because of
that not reaching out to people around them. I am able to put those aside and take people as
people, no different than my person and reach out to them with countless positive repercussions.

Ian Hodder s Reading The Past
W Welliver
Reading the Past In Reading the Past, Ian Hodder argues that Processual, or New, Archaeology is
flawed and that we must look at approaches used before its adoption and integrate parts of those
approaches into the study of archaeology. He points out that Symbols in Action helped him to
develop three ideas regarding how to do this. First, we must consider that material culture has
meaning. Second, that the individual is important to the development of theory in archaeology; and
finally that archaeology is most closely related to history and should consider that in its approach. In
looking at meaning in material culture Hodder brings up how ethnographic work showed that,
contrary to previous belief, interaction between cultures could actually lead to a more marked
difference in their pottery styles. He also referenced burial practices and refuse buildup, and how
they differ based on cultural beliefs of death and dirt, respectively. He also goes on ton argue that
the material culture is not solely an adaptation to the environment, but also depended upon the
culture that produces it. To attempt to properly interpret the material culture requires context. Here
Hodder asks three questions concerning context: what is it, is the meaning we construct the same

Hodder argues that through the actions of individuals and the material culture society is created.
However Processual archaeology rejected the individual and chose to look at the socio cultural
system and its long term development. Ethnographic information shows this as a flawed approach.
In some cases variations in ceramic styles were to denote social differences, as opposed to the
craftsman s education or the ceramics use, something a processual archaeologist may not even
consider. He does point out that the focus on the individual has nothing to do with the role of free
will in change, but rather to add meaning to the material

Rise Of Crime In America
The rise of crime in America seems like it is getting worse each and every year. To say that crime
only exist in the hood is an understatement. Crime is happening everywhere in our poverty
neighborhoods, even in the wealthiest neighborhoods crime is happening. You have different types
of crime weather it is murders, shoplifting, robberies it happens. Rising murders and homicides in
cities deserve attention now before it s too late and it s one of our loved ones.
Chicago getting the troops sent to help with the crime cases is a good idea. I do think that there can
be other ways that can lighten some of the violence in Chicago is by making stricter gun laws. I
think when a person that is dangerous get a hold of a weapon, that is not good and they should be
the biggest targeted people. I think that if people in Chicago do purchase a firearm they should be
required to take a gun course for a minimum of 20 hours at the most. I think that ll enlighten them

  • 2. Grade Inflation And Elementary Inflation Grade inflation the belief that students are receiving grades that they haven t worked for and therefore don t deserve. But what s so wrong about grade inflation? When learning about this topic we open the doors to a multitude of other problems plaguing our educational system. When looking at grade inflation, we re able to understand these often forgotten about and looked over problems, which enables us to start taking steps forward towards a brighter educational future. When researching the topic of gradeinflation, one begins to detect a multitude of problems, such as the effects it holds on the students and teachers, and the deflating value of grades themselves. These issues have been long ignored and continue to disrupt our educational system. Mark Oppenheimer shares the same point of view in his article, There s Nothing Wrong With GradeInflation, where he discussed his opinion, that grade inflation is one of the much lesser issues and that we need to focus on more pressing matters. Meanwhile, others such as Rojstaczer hold strong counter arguments. He argues that grade inflation is becoming an out of control issue that we should focus on fixing. In the past colleges like Princeton and Wellesley have tried to adopt policies to help curb grade inflation. Even though it lowered the percentages of high grades, effectively lowering the amount of grade inflation, it came with unforeseen consequences that affected the students and staff. • 3. Ostrom s Privatization Definition Overall, Ostrom is critical of Hardin s approach in dealing with over exploited common resources such privatization and government regulation. She is critical of the inflexibility of Hardin s model and its pessimistic outlook for the future (Ostrom et al., 1999). Moreover, it has become evident that common pool resources, such as overfishing, are difficult to address. Ostrom, argues that for the past two decades the approaches taken to address common pool resources, many following Hardin s model, have not been successful in addressing negative externalities and in some cases have induced further damages (Ostrom,2008). One of the arguments Ostrom would make would be against privatization and government regulation of fisheries. Ostrom, makes clear that privatization of open access resources is often inefficient (Ostrom et al., 1999).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Privatization would address these issues on a broad scale with standard regulations that would not take into consideration underlying conflict experienced by the poorer users of the common resource (Ostrom et al., 1999). Instead, management of these resources should be site specific, where some fishery communities would benefit from self organized monitoring and implementation (Ostrom et al., 1999). For instance, the government intervention for northern cod in Canadian waters had a disproportionate impact on local fishers, who established local rules, yet government intrusion caused a collapse to the fishery market and outside fishers didn t suffer the consequences as heavily as the locals, causing higher poverty rates and unemployment (Ostrom, ... • 4. Old Earth Creationism Research Paper As stated previously stated old earth creationism is a form of creationism that is based off of the contents of Genesis and does use scientific theories to support itself. The main idea of old earth creationism is that just about everything that happened in Genesis from the Bible is true, but while it is true it is not completely accurate or even in the correct order. What this means is that while Genesis does say everything happens over the course of a week or a seven day period, it does not specify how long a day is. This means that a day could be anywhere from one hundred and sixty eight hours to a few million years. If each day in Genesis is a few million years then that would mean that the bible does partially agree with the big bang theory.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Genesis in the Bible, the order in which the universe and everything that lives in it was created started when God said the phrase Let there be light! and continued with the creation of the seas and the creation of dryland after this God created plants and trees, then he created the sun and moon. Next he began creating life, he began with the animals of the sea and the animals of the air, after this he created land animals, and finally he created human beings. Logically this does not make sense because it states the God created light, plants, and trees before he created the stars, this is where old earth creationism comes into place, but this was already stated in the previous paragraph, why this is being mentioned is that old earth creationism also relates to how life in the universe was created. While the events that took place in Genesis relating to the creation of life are believable, the only problem is how long it took God to create all the life in the universe and the fact that a fishes, birds, land animals, and humans could not have each spontaneously appeared, this is why old earth creationism was mentioned again. Not only does old earth creationism relate to this, but also evolution. As stated in one of the previous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of Green Day By George W. Bush Art is an essential form of protest in a time of crisis or for political or social reforms. George W. Bush is one of the most controversial presidents in history and prompted some of the loudest outcries from the public. The music world became very involved in this particular fight, many artists from multiple generations and genres protested Bush. American Idiotby Green Day is one of the best examples and the most well known protest of Bush and his administration. However, despite its popularity and acclaim it did receive a lot of criticism. Going against such a powerful and influential person in society, the band subjected themselves to the possibility of censorship by the media and accusations of being unpatriotic. Green Day felt the weight of the darkness that covered the country during Bush s first term...They found a voice in an era that was disorienting for many (D Ambrosio, Green Day Never Gives Up ). Although the album did not stop Bush s re election, it was both a harbinger and beneficiary of the Bush administration s plummeting approval, selling steadily through 2005 (Pareles, Jon. The Morning After American Idiot. ). American Idiot sold 267000 copies in the US and was number 1 on multiple chains, like Billboard s top 100. It received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2005, Favorite Pop/Rock Album in 2005 at the American Music Awards, Best International Album in 2006 at the BRIT Awards, and won and was nominated for multiple other awards. The awards, critical acclaim, and general popularity amongst the public shows that a quality record that contains a well thought out message can still appeal to a broad market (Newman, A Smart Start For Green Day ). Green Day maintains the idea of being punk insurgents, rebellious musicians who push boundaries and more closely align with teenage angst rather than adults. In spite of their reputation, Green Day was criticized by fans of going sappy, especially in regards Wake Me Up When September Ends which was centered around the profound effect the death of his father had on Armstrong. • 6. Police Enforcement And The Law Enforcement What is law enforcement? The term has different meanings for individuals in our society based on personal experiences. Law enforcement officers are members of society that come together in an organized fashion and enforce the law. Law enforcement officers enforce the law by deterring, punishing individuals and rehabilitating them. Law enforcement officers have been a part of our society since the beginning of our democracy. Law enforcement officers are public servants to the public to maintain peace in our society. Is this the case? In recent years, individuals have felt how law enforcement agencies treat minorities. With the on growing population of minorities in the United States, communities are becoming more diverse in policeagencies. Should police agencies be a representation of the communities they serve? When individuals picture a law enforcement officer they tend to get the image of a white male officer. Individuals hardly or do not see minority, gender officers in police agencies. In our history, law enforcement officer have always been one certain race and individuals have accepted this way of order up until recent years. Many minorities or genders do not apply to police agencies for several factors or barriers it brings to them. • 10. The Mall Of New Jersey This first time I remember walking through the mall in New Jersey I was a little girl holding my mother s hand. This mall is a dismal place, with one level and one major department store on each end. The elongated brown brick walls made me feel like I am walking into a dungeon, into the land of the abyss. It was not a joyous place for a child to visit. On one occasion, my mother brought me an ice cream cone and with one lick it was on the floor. I never saw my mother so mad before; she picked up the ice cream and demanded I receive another one. Little did I know that this dark dreary space was going was my future place of employment. The mall was not a place I hung out at as a teenager, first, it was too far and second we had a downtown to shop. While I was away at school they remodeled the mall and expanded the space into a mega palace to include four levels of bright lights, white walls, shining floors, glass elevator and a skylight. The mall added a movie theater, bookstore, hair salons, restaurants, food court, computer stores, post office, and fitness center, just to name a few minor changes. I was speechless, walking around the same mall as I did as a child with amazing like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. • 12. Are Tasers Safe The invention that revolutionized law enforcement was later the most hated weapon on the market. Tasers send thousands of electric volts through the human body, which undoubtedly stops the body from moving forward. Taser International introduced the M26 and X26 to save lives, rather than using a lethal weapon like a gun. The tasertemporarily shocks the body, which helps the policeforce take the suspect into custody. The documentary, Killing Them Safely, is about the accusations of Taser International s tasers killing people when they said it was safe. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On August 9, 2016, a young, black, 18 year old, named Michael Brown, was shot and killed by a white policeman in Ferguson, Missouri. There had been a robbery that night, which had two black males as suspects. The police thought Brown had matched the description and cornered him until other officers arrived on the scene. Brown had made a run on foot after being grazed by a bullet in the thumb. After this event, the whole case is based on witnesses. Some witnesses say that Brown has surrendered and put his hands up, which ended up with him being shot. Others say he had just started walking toward the officer and then got shot. The policeman is still unaware if he is guilty or innocent, but what if he had used a taser rather than a gun? If he were to use a taser, Brown would have most likely dropped to the ground and the police would have taken him into custody. This could have prevented the raids that happened only a year after Brown had died. Tasers are used to save lives that are both innocent and guilty. All police have to make split second decisions when in a dangerous situation. If they were to make the wrong one, there are major consequences for the mistakes made. Depending on the situation, and how serious it is, a taser can be used to save a life and a wrong decision. When used correctly for only five seconds of shock, there is little to no injuries to the suspect. There is more of a risk of the police losing the job, then there is the suspect being not ... This semester, after his freshmen year at college, George managed to secure himself a comfortable union job which offers overtime and a paycheck far larger than he could have ever received any previous summer. George s new role at Eastern Diary situated him on the nightshift team where there were no managers, just a team leader, Paul, who everyone on the shift looked to for direction. Although Paul and the nightshift crew held a sense of responsibility for getting their work done, the visible artifacts of horseplay tended to supersede the overall company s element of culture which includes the safety of the employees and customers. Their role was to follow the production order of ice cream handed to Paul by the day shift s superintendent. One night in particular, George found the ice cream production line halted by maggots clogging up the piping. The story on the surface is about a wealthy man named Ned Merrill who decides to swim home to his wife Lucinda and two daughters using a string of swimming pools. However, when he arrives home he comes to an empty house. Using an in depth analysis, it is revealed that his journey is actually his decline in status, and effects of alcoholism. Ultimately it could be argued that the story shows the dangers of wealth and alcoholism. Kevin reveals to Ned his inability to swim well and in response Ned builds his confidence by indulging in pretend swimming. This moment reveals Ned s humanity. The audience believes the moment is fleeting because once they reach the end of the pool Ned reverted back to wanting to complete his goal instead of staying there to play with boy. The purpose of this paper is to collect, sort, and report on the financial data of publicly traded company. This is much like that which is performed by a Certified Public Accountant. In the case of this exercise, the information is presented from the perspective of a student and future business leader. A summary of both the company s business and financial health is also included in this paper. Without further ado, let s delve in to the company chosen for this assignment. Columbia Sportswear Company (Columbia) is a brand well known to and loved by the author of this paper. Numerous products are found in her closet: fleece wear, foot wear, rain gear, and clothing. A pair of hiking boots purchased in 2005 for a trip to the east coast made their debut walking 13 miles in one day on the streets of New York City. Not only are these boots still worn today, so also is a rain parka purchased in 1999. An interesting point to consider is that many of these items are purchased in outlet stores or as seconds . Personal experience with this brand aside, a glimpse in to Columbia s history may prove that this company s focus on quality holds high standards. Logically speaking, I assumed a not for profit organisation would have far less resources, for lack of a better word, be disorganised; given the reliance on a pool of volunteers rather than salaried employees. Furthermore, I expected to receive minimal supervision and/or training as I appreciated that my supervisor s time was extremely valuable. After having spent 3 days at Amnesty International Australia ( AIA ), I would argue that my assumptions have thus far proven correct. Having worked in large corporate organisations such as Deloitte and the QBE Insurance Group, the contrast in resources could not be starker. Furthermore, my supervisor often lacked time to run me through all the tasks she wanted me to do. For example, on the first day she had to cut the orientation short because of an urgent call. Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Executive Summary CIA Central Intelligence Agency Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is centered on the same basic principles as the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in the 1940 s but with some significant changes, specifically in its organization and methods. The OSS, the world s first global intelligence organization, was organized and overseen by Wild Bill Donovan and expanded at an unprecedented pace throughout World War II. The OSS was the foundation for today s CIA. It was because of the successes and failures of the OSS that the CIA has been able to grow and develop. As is made clear by the detailed descriptions of Bill Donovan s routine and procedures in the biography Wild Bill Donovan by Douglas Waller, the leadership and management of the CIA today is drastically different from the original OSS. Donovan was appointed by FDR, in the same way the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency is today. Regression: having firm or overstated beliefs in leaders or experts to resolve environmental problems as there is nothing the individual can do. • 34. Rhetorical Pathos In Never Cry Wolf By Farley Mowat What do you think of wolves? Do you think they re blood thirsty killers, or do you think they are rather friendly animals? In the book, Never Cry Wolf, (1963) the author, Farley Mowat, writes about his excursion to the sub arctic Barren Lands of Canada to study how wolves act and how the community is being affected by the wolves. The people of Churchill lead Mowat to believe the wolves are something that they aren t, which is a blood thirsty killer. Mowat then uses the rhetorical strategy Pathos throughout the book to show you how he personifies the wolves and how fear is all in our minds. Pathos represents an appeal to the emotions of the audience. Mowat uses this rhetorical strategy to get us to feel the emotions that he felt. When arriving in Churchill, Mowat says that he discovered that although wolves reputedly devour several people in the Arctic Zone every year, they will always refrain from attacking a pregnant eskimo (24). In Chapter 4 When is a Wolf Not a Wolf?, Mowat shares his fear. He hears howling in the distance and quickly hides saying I found myself wishing I were a pregnant eskimo (42). Although this is funny, it made me feel fear for Mowat because of Churchill s rumors that you would be eaten. It turns out the howling was just huskies which led Mowat to the realization that maybe everything that the people said isn t true. A couple chapters later in Chapter 7 The Watcher Watched, Mowat learned that maybe wolves aren t savage killers and maybe just the opposite of that. This lesson was learned when Mowat was out searching for the wolves and they were behind him the whole time. A struck of shock lit Mowat up when he realized that the wolves had any chance to attack him and they didn t, instead they sat quietly and observed Mowat. This sent fear through me because it led Mowat to new ideas which means he s going to put more trust into the wolves and go right into it with an open mind. From Chapter 7 on, the whole perspective changes. It is the characteristics that Amory develops on his own, without Beatrice s influence, that redeem him. • 41. The Industrial Revolution Of The Green Revolution Introduction To date, historical evidence, from the industrial revolution to the green revolution, show that agriculture growth has long been the engine of development. This idea has long helped promoting the capitalist agriculture transition as the only path to rise resident s income (Zhang, et al., 2015) in order to get people out of poverty. Accordingly, many started celebrating the global rise in incomes as a success of those policies while the lagging in Africa showed the undermined inequalities and marginalisation of the most vulnerable categories. Yet, the specificity in Africa is, today, getting more and more attention as it shows not only the persistence of poverty but a high concentration in rural areas. Accordingly, the starting point of this paper is that agriculture growth is definitely necessary but the management of the transition process and the understanding of the past and the initial interconnected conditions lead to different path and development patterns beyond the polarized debate between traditional as pro poor and the advanced as urban bias. To do so, firstly a study of the different global patterns of poverty, where it is concentrated, who are the poor and the resulting social relations is needed. Afterwards, the concept of initial conditions will be explored with a focus on the role of the initial technical investment in shaping the urban bias development patterns. Second, that the individual is important to the development of theory in archaeology; and finally that archaeology is most closely related to history and should consider that in its approach. In looking at meaning in material culture Hodder brings up how ethnographic work showed that, contrary to previous belief, interaction between cultures could actually lead to a more marked difference in their pottery styles. He also referenced burial practices and refuse buildup, and how they differ based on cultural beliefs of death and dirt, respectively. He also goes on ton argue that the material culture is not solely an adaptation to the environment, but also depended upon the culture that produces it.
