support of the community leaders. These community leaders include natural leaders
within the community, Union Leaders, and politically active citizens. One example
of these community leaders was Lisa Boggs. She is a Civic Association Leader and

Growing up, I loved Jelly Bellies. The colors, flavors and seemingly limitless
combinations had me captivated for hours on long road trips as my family moved
from state to state. Almost without thinking, I would sort them. Blues and greens,
browns and beiges, whites and blacks. The problem with this sorting came when I
would pack all of one color into my mouth, and that with a handful of cherry flavored
beans, I d get an unfortunate cinnamon taste.
I learned early on not to judge a Jelly Bean by its color, and that it was an
unrewarding practice to group together these individual candies because when not
every bean fit into a color category, I forced it to. The same can be said for people.
Each and every one of us are unique individuals, and it is virtually impossible to
effectively sort us into groups even more so as our society progresses. Identifiers
such as race, religion, sexual orientation even gender which we once used to group
people together, now make up the many cracks in modern American society. It is this
action of separating the Red Jelly Bellies from the rest that creates an almost

Anderson recognizes the difficulty that arises from attempting to define nation,
nationality and nationalism. Despite its influence on modern life Anderson s aim in
this essay is to prove that nationalism is a created by cultural artefacts . He proposes
that a nation is an imagined political community . This imagined community does not
require face to face interactions between its members. Anderson then goes on to
discuss what he terms the cultural roots of which these ideologies stemmed from. He
says the dwindling down of religious beliefs was responsible for the creation of
nationalism and the concept of a nation. My interpretation of this is that because the
unifier that previously existed (religion) was ebbing a new unifier needed to be put

One interesting topic that is discussed in this essay is the role that black and white
abolitionists and the civil war played in the creation of Americanism. The Civil War,
they say, has relevance because it brought the two opposing ideas of American
identity into conflict. Kazin and McCartin argue that it was not until the nation s
leaders thought the conflict would tear the nation apart that they decided the solution
was Americanization. The authors continue by discussing historical events and
happenings which fluctuated or aided to Americanism such as the issue of
immigration, WWI, the Vietnam War and WWII. The argument proposed in this
essay was less apparent to me that that which was proposed in the Andersons essay.
However, what I made of the essay was that the authors recognize that inequality
exists in the United States but they also recognize that there must be some common
ground. Something has to unify the country and that is where Americanism comes into

diction choice included in the text includes the author saying that everything about
the lake was the same as before, but providing tiny alterations between his past and
present experience. The slight changes noticed by White display how memories
are changed as time continues. Paragraph 11 of Once More to the Lake says,
Inside, all was just as it had always been, except there was more Coca Cola and not
so much Moxie and root beer and birch beer and sarsaparilla. This quote explains
how the lake store had changed slightly over time to include more of the beverages
currently popular. Although White says, all was just as it had always been, this isn
t completely true when he also uses the word except which describes the change that
has occurred. Noticing and describing the slight changes that have taken place over
the years at the lake presents the idea that memories are changed over time. The
poem Forgetfulness by Billy Collins and the essay Once More to the Lake by E.B.
White both use strong diction to promote a theme of memories changing as time
moves on.
