would pack all of one color into my mouth, and that with a handful of cherry flavored
beans, I d get an unfortunate cinnamon taste.
I learned early on not to judge a Jelly Bean by its color, and that it was an
unrewarding practice to group together these individual candies because when not
every bean fit into a color category, I forced it to. The same can be said for people.
Each and every one of us are unique individuals, and it is virtually impossible to
effectively sort us into groups even more so as our society progresses. Identifiers
such as race, religion, sexual orientation even gender which we once used to group
people together, now make up the many cracks in modern American society. It is this

Colby and I jumped into the car and took off, avoiding the lady in the SUV, and my
grandpa behind us.
The usually short seven minute drive to the vet seemed like an eternity. As we
were driving there was a horrible stench, it smelled like one of Madix s farts. Colby
and I both knew it was the dog, but neither one of us said anything. I began crying
again as I thought of what I would do if Madix was dead.
Colby had not worried about parking inside the lines, we both jumped out and rushed
into the vet s office.
Our dog just got hit by a car. Colby said with a tremble in his voice. A veterinarian
hurried out from the back and took Madix s lifeless body out of my arms. His head

One interesting topic that is discussed in this essay is the role that black and white
abolitionists and the civil war played in the creation of Americanism. The Civil War,
they say, has relevance because it brought the two opposing ideas of American
identity into conflict. Kazin and McCartin argue that it was not until the nation s
leaders thought the conflict would tear the nation apart that they decided the solution
was Americanization. The authors continue by discussing historical events and
happenings which fluctuated or aided to Americanism such as the issue of
immigration, WWI, the Vietnam War and WWII. The argument proposed in this

However, what I made of the essay was that the authors recognize that inequality
exists in the United States but they also recognize that there must be some common

Coal in the United States has long been the #1 producer of energy. Massive seams of
coal are found in the Appalachian Mountains, and our reliance on this fossil fuel has
meant devastation for many mountain residents and over 500 mountains. As our
society advances, the need for more energy advances. What were once beautiful
rolling hills are now flattened plateaus reminiscent of a landscape you would see in
the desert. We as a nation have only short term interest in our environment, and
choose to ignore the many warning signs this planet continues to offer us. Left in our
path of destruction are the many residents of Appalachia and a landscape that begs us
for forgiveness.
Mountaintop removal is process where the tops of mountains are removed with
explosives in order to extract coal from inside the mountain. The debris created by
the explosions is discarded in a valley, which is then called fill material. A loophole
in the Clean Water Actreclassified the waste created by mountaintop removal waste
as valley fill, which in turn greatly increased extraction of coal from mountains (225).
These valleys usually contain streams which become buried underneath fill, causing
much of the natural habitat to vanish and poisoning what streams are left. The older
and more traditional method was to dig inside the mountain through a tunnel network
which was more time consuming and required much more personnel. Of course,
