CARBON CYCLE
TIT BITS ABOUT CARBON
Atomic no # 6a.m.u .
Atomic mass # 12 a.m.u .
Building block of all plants and
animals.
DEFINITION OF CARBON CYCLE
The process in which carbon
travels ( in form of CO2 ) from
atmosphere into organisms and
earth and then back into
atmosphere.
DISCOVERY OF CARBON CYCLE
Initially discovered by JOSEPH PRIESTLEY
and ANTOINE LAVOISIER.
Popularized by HUMPHRY DAVY.
IMPORTANCE OF CARBON CYCLE
This cycle is important for
sustaining plant and animal lives.
Plants utilize carbon dioxide and
produce oxygen .
Animals require oxygen for their
living.
CARBON
CYCLE
STEPS
1# Carbon enters the
atmosphere as carbon
dioxide from
respiration
(breathing) and
combustion .
Carbon dioxide is
absorbed by
producers (life
forms that make
their own food e.g.
plants) to
make carbohydrate
s in photosynthesis
. These producers
then put off
oxygen.
Animals feed on the
plants. Thus passing
the carbon compounds
along the food chain.
Most of the carbon
these animals
consume however is
exhaled as carbon
dioxide. This is
through the process of
respiration. The
animals and plants
then eventually die.
The dead organisms
(dead animals and
plants) are eaten
by decomposers in
the ground. The
carbon that was in
their bodies is then
returned to the
atmosphere as
carbon dioxide.
In some
circumstances the
process of
decomposition
is prevented. The
decomposed plants
and animals may
then be available
as fossil fuel in the
future for
combustion.
CARBON CYCLE IN WATER
Carbon dioxide is utilized by
marine plants .These plants are
eaten by animals .As the animal
dies the body is decomposed
and carbon is returned.
Carbon is also stored at ocean
floor as carbonate. Carbon is
deposited in sedimentary level
which is than liberated as the
level decomposes.
HARMFUL ASPECTS OF CARBON CYCLE
 If any abnormality is caused in carbon cycle
it can be very dangerous to living
organisms.
 GREEN HOUSE EFFECT- if carbon is not
recycled it can help in formation of green
house gases.
 GLOBAL WARMING- without proper recycling
of carbon can increase the temperature of
earth.
