The Carbon Cycle
Carbon in the Atmosphere
- We get carbon in our atmosphere mainly from
respiration. We breath out CO2 (carbon dioxide) every
time we take a breath!
- We also get carbon in our atmosphere by burning
fossil fuels that we use to get energy
- Build up of carbon in the atmosphere can lead to
global climate change
Carbon Removed from the Atmosphere
Carbon is removed from the atmosphere by:
- Photosynthesis of green plants
and algae
- During photosynthesis plants
take in CO2 to make food
Carbon in the Ground
- When organisms die,
their bodies decay in
the ground. All of the
carbon that was inside
their bodies is now in
the earth.
- If the carbon inside the
earth continues to be
buried, it can eventually
become a fossil fuel.
CARBON
Carbon in Living Things
- The main way that carbon
enters living things is through
photosynthesis. (When plants
take in CO2 and make food.)
- When animals eat plants they
get the carbon. Carbon is
continuously passed along
through the food chain.
