This case study describes a 40-year-old male who was admitted to the emergency department after ingesting an unknown substance in a suicide attempt. He had a history of epilepsy treated with carbamazepine. Laboratory results found his carbamazepine level was over 20ug/ml, more than twice the normal therapeutic range of 4-12 ug/ml. The patient was treated with hemoperfusion followed by hemodialysis to clear the high carbamazepine levels from his system. This treatment was repeated twice until his carbamazepine levels returned to the normal range. The case study concludes that dialysis techniques can be beneficial for managing severe carbamazepine poisoning.
