The Legalization Of All Drugs
The legalization of all drugs considered illegal in the United States today would do more than any
other act to eradicate current social and political problems. Though many would naturally think
otherwise, legalizing drugs like marijuana, ecstasy, meth, cocaine, heroin, mushrooms, LSD, and
DMT would cripple organized crime, majorly reduce death and injury from drug use, unclog the court
system, and make these drugs much safer to use.
Contrary to popular belief, the legalization of all drugs would make the streets a much safer place.
Addicts must pay hundreds of times the actual cost of production because of the risk dealers and
manufacturers have in production and distribution, so they often need to resort to crime to pay for
their addiction. If drugs were legalized, the price would greatly reduce and addicts won t have to
commit crime to support their habit. Some addicts don t make enough money to purchase their
expensive fix, and feel they have no other choice but to break the law. If dugs were legalized and
regulated, the price would go down drastically because there would be no more risk involved. A few
grams of cocaine could be as easy to obtain and as affordable as a pack of cigarettes. Addicts would no
longer need to commit crime to obtain their drugs. Some would say though, that drug related offences
would still exist. For example, if drugs were legal for anyone over 21, there would be a demand for
those younger, and drug related crime would still exist. Is this not

Evolution Of The Airplane Research Paper
The first name that comes to mind when talking about the history of airplanes are The Wright
Brothers. Orville and Wilbur were American inventors who are credited with the inventing, building,
and flying the first self propelled airplane that could be controlled and could land safely. On December
17, 1903, the Wright brothers set for the skies and made the first controlled flight near Kitty Hawk,
North Carolina. From the first powered, manned, and controlled flight many aspects of the airplane
has been improved while the basis of the control system pilots use is still intact. From the first airplane
to the current ones that occupy the sky today have seen changes and improvements in avionics, the
structure and materials that are being used, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Planes have shifted from wood and canvas structures to ones made from aluminum and other
composite materials. Propeller driven planes are still around today but the engine used to spin the
propeller has become more efficient and powerful. Jet engines have replaced many of the propeller
driven engines on the bigger planes allowing the plane to fly faster and at greater altitudes. The
incorporation of avionic systems like auto pilot, navigation, and communication has made the pilot s
life easier when flying. Without these advances in the airplane people and/or goods wouldn t able to
fly the great distances they do today. The airplane is used all over the world for varying reasons,
commercial airline companies such as United, Delta, and Southwest fly passengers all over the world
for business or leisure. Companies like UPS, Fedex, and the United State Postal Service use planes to
deliver packages all over the world. The military uses planes in time of war, for reconnaissance
missions, and to deliver aid to countries in times of need. Emergency services use planes to transport
injured people to different locations or put out wildfires from the sky. Those are just a few examples
of how improvements to the airplane has made an impact on citizens that surround

Robots are Over-taking Us
Robots are over taking us. Or are being taken over by robots? There have been many robots developed
to make life easier. Robotics has had some positive effects in the performance of certain jobs. It can
help us complete difficult jobs that use materials that are not safe for humans to handle such as
radioactive materials. A single robot can do heavy tasks that would require 10 people to complete.
However, this savings in time and money for companies could result in loss of hours and wages for
employees. Robotics is affecting many parts of our lives right now, from jobs, to house chores to
medicine and a lot more. But which is really more effective and efficient? Humans or robots? Yet, we
continue to develop robots to help us. Is a future ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Workers are moved to supervisory roles where they no longer have to perform dangerous tasks in
hazardous settings. With the improved worker safety, there has been an increase in financial savings
since there are fewer healthcare and insurance claims by employers. Robot movements are always
exact, minimizing material waste ( RobotWorx ).
Disadvantages of Robots
The use of robots may also present many disadvantages, such as cost. For example, the iRobots that
could clean a pool costs around $1,300 ( Mirra ). Another concern is that robots might be taking away
our jobs (Tobe). Robots used to perform industrial jobs can help save labor hours and money (Tobe). It
is a fact that robots complete jobs with higher quality. Jobs such as gluing, spraying paint, and
trimming are performed faster, consistently and with better quality by robots (Sands, D.). This could
have a negative effect on humans because it will take away many jobs, resulting in income loss.
In addition, the initial investment to integrate robotics into businesses is substantial, especially when
business owners are limiting their purchases to new robotic equipment (Tobe). He said that the cost of
robotic automation and regular maintenance needs could potentially have a financial toll on the
company. Employees will require training programs and learn how to interact with the new robotic
equipment. This normally takes time and financial outlay. Robots will be

Resurrection In Charles Dicken s A Tale Of Two Cities
The concept of resurrection has always been an alluring subject in all cultures. Some believe this can
be achieved through purification and repentance. Throughout the book, situations arise in which
characters allude to rising again in a new life. The reader sees to what length people will go to bring
about improvement in a beloved s life, or to achieve a much desired afterlife of one s own. In Charles
Dicken s novel, A Tale of Two Cities, the idea of resurrection plays a huge role in the lives of many
characters, including Dr. Manette, Sydney Carton, and Jerry Cruncher; the theme also adds to Dickens
s message by illustrating the importance of love, morality, and faith. One very significant example is
of Dr. Manette, who originally was traumatized as a result of his unfair imprisonment but eventually is
recalled to life (Dickens 13). While Dr. Manette was in jail, he grappled exhaustingly every day trying
to deal with his deteriorating mental state. His time spent in the Bastille is compared to him being
buried alive for this reason; it was so inhumane and cruel that he felt dead. Dr. Manette was essentially
being brought back to life with his release from prison. However, Dr. Manette s rebirth has just begun
and does not become complete until he is reunited with his daughter (Dingyuan and Xiaohua 91). His
freedom does not only affect his life, it has a huge impact on his daughter and even other characters
like Darnay. Lucie s unconditional love for her father is

Exploring The Scars Of Centuries Essay

Professor E. Avila
8 June 2015
Exploring the Scars of Centuries Human slavery is a phenomenon that has been present since the
times of the Romans and the Greeks. As a common misconception, societies, especially America s
tend to believe that slavery was always black. Throughout a period of enslavement, human beings
have again and again treated slavery and racial hierarchy as an act of the norm embedded in human
behavior, which they use in order to make a clear distinction between them and us to justify such
atrocious and immortal acts. With careful analysis of premature human enslavement, whiteness as
beauty, the west and the rest, disparities between European ethnic groups, the study of anthropology,
white slavery, linguistic movements, popular culture and different political institutions supported by
America s governing law, the creation of the white race is drawn. With emphasis on the role played by
Irish and Black Americans, the support of structural forces and cultural practices taken from historical
examples drawn from the literary works of Harris, Painter, Roediger and Katznelson, slavery
misconceptions, the distinction between races, the formation of the white race and its benefits and the
homogeneity between black and slavery become apparent. Taking the broader history of human
enslavement into account, slavery seen during the time of the Greeks and the Romans shows an
enormous misconception of slavery: slavery was not

When Senior Year Came Up
Then senior year came up. Since I loved California and since I didn t want my parents to pay for the
extra out of state tuition, I decided to apply to in state (California) schools, such as Universities of
California, California State Universities, and Private Universities. As I was applying to colleges, I
decided to apply as a Statistics major. Even though I have never taken statistics classes before, I knew
Statistics would be the best option for me due to many reasons. First of all, I was really good at and
loved math, and I thought a degree in Statistics would get me better jobs than a degree in
Mathematics. Secondly, I enjoyed playing around with baseball data, baseball stats and thus, I thought
I could be able to play around with more baseball data if I study statistics. Finally, during my senior
year, I never knew what field (sciences, business, social studies, etc.) I really wanted to get into and I
felt that statistics can be applied to basically any field and thus would not hurt me in the future when I
find something I really wanted to do. After five months of crossing my fingers and being nervous
about my college acceptance, I got all my acceptance letters and rejection letters. Other than San
Diego State University, I was given three other universities to choose from. As a result, my spring
break of senior year was dedicated to visiting Universities and deciding which college I should go to.
After a week or two of thinking, I decided to do pursue my

Individuality In The Virgin Suicides And Lolita
The hyperbolic lack of individuality in The Virgin Suicides changes both the image of the boys and
the girls. The narration is through the perspective of the boys as one entity, an indistinguishable
chorus, rather than from separable perspectives. The chorus of boys views the girls as one entity
separating but ultimately coming back together (130). They can only see the similarity of the girls:
their similar hair, morals, upbringing, clothes, disposition, stature, age. This exemplifies that the girls
themselves did not draw the boys in, but only the beauty of their sadness and the grandeur of their
mass suicide. The girls had an inclination to maintain family togetherness and saw themselves as a
both a human pact and each other s greatest confidants (216). The girls need to be close to one another
foreshadowed the night of the four murders, when neither sister would leave without any other given
sister. Closeness overpowers the predisposition to protect loved ones. Obsession is also present in the
repetition of hypotheticals regarding what could have been between the boys and the Lisbon sisters.
They frequently watch the Lisbon home just wondering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On one side, the Lisbon sisters lose their grip on what innocence truly means, allowing themselves to
get caught in the fast moving pace of their youth. Without any outlet for their self expression, they
take their own lives out of pain and grief. The religious references and lively imagery paradoxically
describe the lack of morality and the ultimate loss of life. Lo is no longer Dolores on the dotted line,
but Lolita through and through (11). Humbert ripped her childlike innocence from her delicate
fingertips, creating a wandering soul without roots. Her nymphet exterior fades, along with her virtue.
The sexual symbolism and moral questions transform Lo s energetic youth into erotic

Essay On Iceberg Theory
One way of looking at Hemingway s (1932) Iceberg Theory is through Conversational Implicature
Theory. This approach is part of the pragmatics approach applying to literature.
The application of pragmatics in literary analysis dates back to the 1970s. Although previous
researchers like Morris (1938) had already proposed the connection between pragmatics and rhetoric,
it was not until 1971 that Ohmann first touched the field by defining literature as a type of discourse.
Later in 1976, Van Dijk first used the name Literary Pragmatics . In Pratt s (1977) Toward a Speech
Acts Theory of Literary Discourse, the author claimed that language in literary works is also
analyzable by linguistics like other forms of language, and this theory was later ... Show more content

By saying the hills look like white elephants, the girl tries to draw out another topic. White elephant in
English is something expensive but useless or troublesome. At this moment, readers cannot know her
intention, but considering their later conversations, the girl is implicating the baby:
By intentionally take the elephant as the animal, the man violates the Maxim of Relation. By saying
words contradictory to each other, he also violates the Maxim of Quality. He stops the girl from
talking about the baby, which receives a reply sounds irony to him. That is why his tone turns harsh.
The man s provocative attitude forces the girl to change the topic. Before she tries a second time, they
talk about a kind of Spanish alcohol, during which we can see that the girl does not know Spanish, and
it can be further speculated that she relies on the man on this trip. Then their topic changes to licorice.
Readers can say it for sure that the girl is talking with implicature:
The man s answer violates the Maxim of Quality, since it is impossible that everything tastes like
licorice. The girl also violates the Maxim of Quality. She knows the man s words are not true, but still
echoes with him. She emphasizes that all the things people have waited so long for taste like licorice,

Abstract
The women s role in the Middle ages art is a fascinating and controversial topic for many reasons.
Most of what happens remained in the darkness, due to the lack of sources and understanding of the
women social, economic and religious position during that time. In this paper we are going to try to
connect dots to trace a profile of the women impact in the arts during the Middle Age era.

The Nature of Solitude in Chopin s Novel, The Awakening
The Nature of Solitude in Chopin s Novel, The Awakening
The name of the piece was something else, but she called it Solitude. When she heard it there came
before her imagination the figure of a man standing beside a desolate rock on the seashore. He was
naked. His attitude was one of hopeless resignation as he looked toward a distant bird winging its
flight away from him. (47)
All along the white beach, up and down, there was no living thing in sight. A bird with a broken wing
was beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling disabled down, down to the water...when she
was there beside the sea, absolutely alone, she cast the unpleasant, pricking garments from her, and for
the first time in her life she stood naked in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The word desolate is used to describe the rock, offering up connotations of a barren, dismal
lifelessness. The figure of the man is naked, or exposed and defenseless. His demeanor reflects
hopeless resignation as he views a distant bird winging away from him. Here resignation can be taken
to mean an unresisting acceptance of something as inescapable and as a surrender. Looking at this
passage in this light, I cannot help but connect it with Robert. After finally vocalizing his love for
Edna, Robert is in a way naked, free of the pretenses of socially conscious manners. Following this
admission, however, Robert leaves off waiting for Edna, gives up on fulfilling his love, due, I think, in
many ways to the social consequences that this would surely bring. Thus Robert too is hopelessly
resigned to social moires which influence him to let his forbidden love wing away from him. This
passage then foreshadows both Robert s resignation and Edna s own experience at the end of the
novel.
The second passage repeats several of the same images. On the beach there is no living thing in sight
and Edna is absolutely alone. Thus the desolation and solitude from the first passage reappear. The
figure of the bird is also depicted again, only in this instance the bird has a broken wing and reel[s]
down, disabled towards the water, closer to the figure of Edna

Explain The Importance Of Working Together When Working...
All practitioners and professionals working with children can complete a common assessment at any
time for a child they work with. CAF was introduced to provide practitioners with children with an
assessment tool that any frontline worker such as someone working in education, health, children s
social care and housing can use. The CAF is specific to England but the same approach of working
together is recommended in all the countries of the United Kingdom. The aim of the CAF is to ensure
assessment is timely and holistic and that children with a range of needs do not have repeat referrals to
and assessments by a number of agencies, which could cause unacceptable delays to the child s chance
of receiving services. CAF is normally completed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Working together in conjunction with other agencies is clearly an important principle of successful
child protection work. Agencies need to share information, work together to protect children and
support families, in order to improve parenting to a safe standard. All practitioners involved with
children have a role. A child s key person could arrange to meet the parents and the health visitor for
example to discuss the extent to which a child is healthy, safe from harm, learning and developing
well, socialising and making positive relationships with others and not significantly impaired by the
effects of poverty. This type of meeting is called Team Around the Child (TAC). There is a pre
assessment checklist for the CAF which early years practitioners can consult before calling such a
meeting. Meetings like this and the process of drawing up a CAF are voluntary. Early years
practitioners should only proceed with the informed consent of parents. By bringing together
information from a health visitor, the early years practitioner and the parent in a TAC, an assessment
of needs can be made in areas such as development of the child, parents and carers and family

The First Surgical Robot, By Dr. James Mcewen And Geof...
The first surgical robot was called the Arthrobot, developed and used for the first time in 1983 in
Canada. The team that developed this robot was led by Dr. James McEwen and Geof Auchinlek and
was in collaboration with an orthopedic surgeon by the name of Dr. Brian Day. There was even a
movie produced by National Geographic on robotics that featured the Arthrobot. Around the same
time, other medical robots were developed including a robotic arm that performed eye surgery and
another that acted as an operating assistant by handing surgeons instruments by responding to voice
commands. In 1985, another robot called the Puma 560 was used to place needles for brain biopsies
using CT guidance. The use for different robots began growing more and more as the years moved on.
This now seemed to be the standard and the future of the medical field. In 1988, Imperial College
London developed the Probot. It was used to perform prostatic surgery. Another four years goes by
and in 1992 another robot called Robodoc, designed and developed by Integrated Surgical Systems
was used to mill out fittings in the femur (the largest bone in the human body) for hip replacements.
As you can see the beginning of surgical robotics was a very busy time in several different
developments. In ten years, these developments and different robots have come a long way. The
beginning robots open new doors in the medical profession from developers all the way to the doctors.
After 1992 further development

Pros And Cons Of Police Report
I think that the pros and cons of police using reports when they testify is that one pro is that they will
be informed on what all happened and not just their side to the story. I also think that is a con at the
same time since they are able to use their reports to be prepared and that also gives them ample
amount of time to change the story just a little to coincide with other officers testimony. In one article
that I found it stated that a homicide detective said he routinely takes his case files home at least one
week before trial and reviews everything. A robbery detective said he likes to study the file and try to

Project Proposal ( Option 3 )
Project Proposal (option 3)
Name: Yao Yang UNI: yy2641
The common theme my project will be focuses on is K means clustering.
The k means clustering problem can be described as following:
Given a set of n data points in d dimensional space R^d and an integer k. Find a set of k points/centers
in R^d, such that the mean squared distance from each data point to its nearest centre (one of the k
centers) is minimized.
Paper Summaries:
A local search approximation algorithm for k means clustering (2004)
The paper considered whether there exists a simple and practical approximation algorithm for k means
clustering.
It brings up the classical tradeoff between run time and approximation factor.
A local improvement heuristic based on swapping centers in and out that yields a (9 + ϵ)
approximation algorithm is presented. The paper also shows that any approach based on performing a
fixed number of swaps achieves an approximation factor of at least (9 ϵ) in all sufficiently high
dimensions by providing example.
In summary, the approximation factor is almost tight for algorithms based on methods that perform
fixed number swaps as shown by the paper.
The effectiveness of Lloyd type methods for the k means problem (2006)
This paper show that if the data satisfies a natural condition on separation/clusterability, then a near
optimal clustering result can be expected as various Lloyd style methods would have great
performance in such setting.
The major algorithmic contribution from

Archetype In Mean Girls
This is girls world, all of the fightings had to be sneaky. Said by Lindsay Lohan in the movie, Mean
Girls. The entertainment and fairytales stories have a tendency to have women going against each
other. Cinderella has mainly had her stepmother and step sisters keeping her busy with chores for
twenty four hours. While Rapunzel is stuck in a high tower alone because of a witch. Not only classic
fairy tales have this pattern, but songs have this same formula. Notably, Taylor Swift is known for her
bitter reputation of calling out her ex boyfriends, but also writes songs calling out women. Lastly,
movies will show women fighting against each other for the comedy effect especially Mean Girls. In
stories, women characters tend to destroy other female archetypes for power. The classic story of
Cinderella has women degrading each other. She lives with her stepmother and stepsisters. After her
father died, she became her slave to them. The archetype of the mother is that she is a witch. Her
archetype is a witch because they tend to manipulate the princess badly. She abused Cinderella and
later on tells her that she can not go to the ball. As for Cinderella, her archetype would be the princess.
She is the princess because of acts like the damsel in distress. Cinderella is docile when her family
bossing around. Her stepmother is controlling her freedom. Another example that is similar to
Cinderella is Rapunzel. The story of Rapunzel is also a classic fairytale where a witch

Full Metal Jacket Film Analysis
Film Analysis Within every man resides good and evil; which quality manifests itself is determined by
how one is raised and views the world. Stanley Kubrick s film Full Metal Jacket takes the concept of
good or evil in man and shows how war, the marines, and government blur soldiers ideas of right or
wrong. By injection of propaganda from these sources a misidentity is created within the solider. Once
this misidentity has taken place it is the soldiers job to figure out what he is: a killing machine as he
has been trained, or a bringer of peace to a war torn nation. A soldiers identity is stripped of him the
second he enters boot camp. It first begins with the shaving of the head which likens boot camp to

This explains how even though joker is inherently good, and continues to be, there are times when you
must act to better yourself. Joker, however, redeems himself in the climax of the movie with the sniper
scene. Even when the sniper has killed three of his fellow soldiers Joker does not have the ability to
take her life. To the other men she is just another VC fighter trying to kill them. Joker, however, sees
her for who she is: a young women of about eighteen and just as human as he and the rest of his
squad. A clear signal of this is when the sniper gets shot once and all the marines are gathered around
her. While the sniper is lying on the ground praying as she is dying, Joker asks the question, What do
we do about her? The only response he receives is, Fuck her, let her rot. Here is where we see a clear
distinction of what Joker has become compared to the rest of the soldiers. Though he is still accepted
by all of his fellow soldiers he is reassured that he is different from the rest. Evil, which is represented
by the other soldiers, is in constant struggle with some of the men s conscience while it has taken full
control of others. In the scene where Joker and Rafterman are riding in a helicopter to the jungle, they
ride with a gunner who is disconnected from reality. While flying, the gunner is shooting random
peasant farmers with no remorse. His first words to Joker and Rafterman are, Anyone who runs is a
VC.

were non Catholic. The church would perform public flogging towards non Catholic missionaries from
passing through countries and preaching their religion. They would then encourage violence towards to
Jewish citizens as they were blamed for cause of the Plague.Other Catholics, in fear of their sins
would perform self flagellation as they worried that they will be infected with the plague. This would

A Rose For Emily Mental Analysis
Clarissa Rojas
Eng Comp II
Prof. Goldberg
17 March 2017
Prompt # 3 Reading A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner is truly an interesting story. This is the
first time I read about a character having a mental illness that made impressed me and engage to read
more. Emily is a simple girl who was left alone with nothing by her dead strict father. In the story, she
was very reclusive and secretive with her life. She then, murdered her lover, Homer. She slept with his
corpse until she died. Emily s mental behavior are caused by few people in her life. This includes her
father and the townspeople. The closest people with Emily is her father. When her dead father was still
alive, he secluded her from the world and overly protected her ... Show more content on

Because of Emily being the last in line from the well known Grierson family, she is recognized by the
every person in town. The townspeople played a role of investigating Emily s cause of mental
behavior. But because Emily is considered a high class person, it gave a reason for the people of
Jefferson to avoid the obvious clues that Emily is mentally displaced and was mentally unstable, due
to her father s death, and capable of premeditated murder. Emily s story and situation was caused by a
number of outlook. Though it is most likely being her segregation from herself to the world. Emily s
father s way of bringing her up and teaching her in life which was a wrong way a parent could do by
secluding her from the outside world and preventing anyone from courting her. Instead of helping her
grow and live her life, she couldn t and she was raised that way by her father so she thinks that it is
what is the right thing to do. Her behavior was certainly psychotic. Homer s death apparently show
that Emily doesn t want to be alone and that his corpse being in her bed assured her that they ll be
together

Wild Swans Analysis
Year 11 Short Story Unit Writing Task
How does Wild Swans explore the central character s experience of adolescence?
In Alice Munro s short narrative Wild Swans, the female adolescent narrator, Rose, travels alone on a
train ride to Toronto. On the train she is sexually harassed by a minister and through Rose s reactions
to the harassment, readers are given a vivid image of how Rose experiences adolescence. Throughout
the story, Rose experiences fear and confusion about growing up, prompting herx to attempt to
evaluate the world through the perspectives of others, and eventually mature into a woman with the
courage to display her long suppressed concupiscence, showing evidence of a complete transition
from a cygnet (baby swan) to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rose is glad that the minister [is] not going to mention God (14), but instead the man starts to harass
her, a far more grotesque action, bringing a sense of irony to the story. At this point, Rose starts to
question the ethics of society, and this can be seen not just as confusion, in the context of the story, but
also as a further exploration of youthful bewilderment about established values from a young age such
as mutual respect and the integrity which adults are expected to uphold. Even towards the end of the
story, Rose could never understand what recommended [the minister] when she decided to self pollute
at a later stage of her life. The lack of answers is the very reason why Rose attempts to consider
multiple perspectives at once in hope for more answers, motivating her development through
adolescence.
Finally, Rose develops greater self awareness, a greater awareness of others and the ability to consider
multiple perspectives, as shown by her mental consideration of the possible repercussions for accusing
the minister of harassment or asking him to take his hand away. Her evidence of awareness for herself
and others is demonstrated through her inability to ask the minister to take his hands away. Due to an
increased awareness of others, Rose feared the other passengers would fixate their attention on her,
showing her shyness in through her mental thoughts. She shaped the words [please don t] in her mind,

Similarities Between Baphomet And Abraxas
There are certain similarities between Baphomet and Abraxas and the later probably influenced the
former. This is something that the Templars themselves may have recognized. Abraxas seems to have
played a central role in the Gnostic cult of Basilides in the second century A.D. Basilides was an
Alexandrian mystic and teacher who for all intents and purposes can only be extracted from
heresiological sources from the Church Fathers. He is either depicted as a disciple of Menander or
Saturninus (both of whom belonged to the Simonian schools of Simon Magus in Syria and Alexandria,
Egypt) or an interpreter of St. Peter named Glaucias. And it is interesting to note that Basilides is said
to come out of these two supposed diametrically opposed traditions (being Simon Magus and St.
Peter). Basilides was more than likely the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Faith was an inborn assent of the soul and is equated to gnosis . It wasn t a matter of instruction or
indoctrination. It was a sort of nature, in fact. Perhaps faith and knowledge for Basilides was the same
thing. Basilides, therefore, had a lot in common with other Gnostics and eventually with the later
Protestant John Calvin as they all shared the idea of predestined salvation. The three nature doctrine
attests to this. The elect were those who had the capacity for faith, and considered themselves
strangers or aliens to the world and long for salvation in Christ and the transcendent. Those who are
incapable of faith, who feel perfectly at home in the world of matter are what Basilides calls worthless
or swine and dogs. Ouch! Birger Pearson in Ancient Gnosticism (p. 139) reflects on this Gnostic
elitism exemplified by the cult of Basilides. This also reflects what is written in Matthew 22:14 of
many being called but few are chosen

Examples Of British Colonialism In Bend It Like Beckham
Bend It Like Beckham is a film that depicts British colonialist values. It shows an Indian family
struggling to keep their culture and values alive in a city where British culture is prominently
overcoming the Indian culture Jess family is trying to hold on to. In the film, Jess parents are
somewhat portrayed as the bad guys because they do not want their daughter to pursue her dream of
becoming a professional soccer player and prevent her from playing throughout most of the movie.
Her parents are portrayed as the strict, conservative Indians, while the British are portrayed as free
spirited and liberating. Instead of excluding it s immigrants, the British are in a way trying to
assimilate them and make them part of the British culture.

Whitman s Song Of Myself
Song of Myself , by Whalt Whitman, is a poem included in the book Leaves of Grass written in 1855.
This poem is probably the most popular of the entire book and, also, one of the most acclaimed and
influential poems written by an American (Wikipedia, 2015). Due to its immense popularity, it has
been translated to many different languages. In the case of Spanish translations, the most well known
version is the one translated by Borges in 1969. Despite its public acknowledgment, Borges translation
is not completely faithful to the original poem. In fact, Canto de mi mismo presents differences with
the original poem, as a result of the differing personal views from both authors. One phrase whose
translation serves as an example of Borges

Parental Discipline And Child Abuse
How many times have you had a conversation with someone about how you were raised? I can
guarantee that at least one person mentioned that they were disciplined through punishments or maybe
this person might actually be you. The person who was forced to deal with punishments as a child
most likely became more disciplined earlier than everyone else and most likely still is.
To be clear, the intended definition of punishments to be used is a penalization for committing an act
that would be considered unacceptable in the eyes of the parent i.e swearing, fighting, being
disrespectful, etc. This is also known as parental discipline. Although it may not seem like it there is a
clear boundary separating parental discipline from child abuse. Parental discipline is intended for the
betterment of the child, while child abuse is for the parent or guardian s sick, demented pleasure. This
clarification allows discussion to begin concerning the main point.
Even though it could be seen as abusive in the eyes of the public, parental discipline is necessary for a
child to become more mature at an early age. Not only will this early maturity allow the child to
develop a sense of right as well as becoming more of a selfless person, it also starts molding them into
a productive member of society with their own set of responsibilities.
The first reason for why parental discipline is necessary when raising a child, is that it makes a child
grow up realizing that the world doesn t revolve around

Laser Eye Surgery
Laser eye surgery, or commonly known as LASIK, is a refractive surgical procedure conducted on the
eye using laser to correct vision problems such as astigmatism, presbyopia, hypermetropia and myopia
(Wachler, 2016). Although the procedure is an efficient method to correct eyesight, there are many
controversial topics surrounding the conduction of the surgery due to the many possible health issues
and risks afterwards. While several clinics offer the opportunity to provide LASIK surgery, the
consultation processes often omit the risks and side effects in detail which can encourage the desire to
undergo surgery (Squire, 2010). One of the most common side effects include vision disturbances
where the patient can experience halos and starbursts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the procedure is an efficient method to correct eyesight, there are many controversial topics
surrounding the conduction of the surgery and debates on whether the procedure would need to be
limited in clinics and hospitals due to the health risks. After the surgery there is around 5% chance of
experiencing long term and permanent side effects and 0.37% of blindness (Wachler, 2016). In Britain,
an estimate of 15,000 people undergo LASIK each year (Wachler, 2016), meaning that around 750
people each year in Britain will experience the long term issues of LASIK and 55 will be blinded or
severely injured. While several clinics offer the opportunity to provide LASIK surgery, the
consultation processes often omit the risks and side effects in detail which can encourage the desire to
undergo surgery (Squire, 2010). The main causes of the issue occur due to poor judgement of the
surgeon during the consultation process when diagnosing for suitability for the surgery. The process
for diagnosing the suitability for patients to undergo LASIK surgery include many factors and
requirements which will be identified by the surgeon during the consultation process. The thickness of
the cornea, diameter of pupils, refractive error, and health can all effect the likelihood of risk during
the process when the ultraviolet laser will instead cause defects and degeneration. Therefore, because
of the information gathered, laser eye surgery should be considered to enforce a harsher guideline to
the qualifications and requirements to undergo the procedure to reduce the risk of side effects and
permanent

How To Write An Essay About John F Kennedy s Assassination
The assassination of John F. Kennedy is what my grandfather and grandmother remember
tremendously about their childhood. They both said the day President Kennedy passed away in Dallas,
Texas, they were all getting to view the aftermath and news on a few televisions that their principle
brought into the rooms. My grandfather said, We were just teenagers in tenth grade and this historical
event put an unknown fear in all of us. They never expected anything like this to happen to their own
president. The day John F. Kennedy was assassinated, he was in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas at the
Texas Conservatory. The governor was in the front seat and John F. Kennedy was in the back seat. My
grandparents said, When they cut the television on, there were secret service surrounding the car and
his wife, Jacklyn Kennedy, was yelling. They also told me that when they were replaying the video,
you could actually see when he got shot. My grandfather told me it was not for a couple minutes until
they realized the governor had also been shot when the president was. ... Show more content on

they had to try their best to find a way to get him back. Although the governor was okay, on this day

A case study of spinal cord injury

A Case of Spinal Cord Injury
1. Describe the functional anatomy of the spinal cord using the following terms: white matter, gray
matter, tracts, roots and spinal nerves. The spinal cord consists of a superficial White matter and a
deep Gray matter. The white matter consists of myelinated axons, which form nerve tracts and the
Gray matter consists of neuron cell bodies, dendrites and axons. The white matter in each half of the
spinal cord is organized into ventral, dorsal and lateral columns. Each column is subdivided into tracts
also called pathways. A collection of axon inside the CNS is called a tract but outside the CNS it is

Quadriplegia is paralysis to some degree in all four limbs. In this type of paralysis, the abdominal and
chest muscles can also be affected, resulting in difficulty breathing, coughing, or clearing the chest. 5.
Define the terms dermatome and myotome and explain how each relates to SCI. Spinal nerves have
motor fibers and sensory fibers. The motor fibers innervate certain muscles, while the sensory fibers
innervate certain areas of skin. A skin area innervated by the sensory fibers of a single nerve root is
known as a dermatome. A group of muscles primarily innervated by the motor fibers of a single nerve
root is known as a myotome. Myotomes are necessary for proper motor functioning; making it
possible to bend the knee, straighten the elbow, flex fingers, and manipulate other muscle groups.
Nerve fibers allowing for the sensation of touch or feeling pain to a corresponding sensory sector of
the skin are dermatomes. These nerves originate from the spine and therefore can be useful in spinal
injuries to evaluate the level of deficit. Pain, lack of sensation, or abnormal functioning of dermatomes
can help pinpoint spinal nerve damage. Each myotome (muscle) and dermatome (region of skin) of
the body is supplied by a particular level or section of the spinal cord and by its corresponding spinal
nerve. There are eight cervical nerves, twelve thoracic nerves, five

  • 2. The Legalization Of All Drugs The legalization of all drugs considered illegal in the United States today would do more than any other act to eradicate current social and political problems. Though many would naturally think otherwise, legalizing drugs like marijuana, ecstasy, meth, cocaine, heroin, mushrooms, LSD, and DMT would cripple organized crime, majorly reduce death and injury from drug use, unclog the court system, and make these drugs much safer to use. Contrary to popular belief, the legalization of all drugs would make the streets a much safer place. Addicts must pay hundreds of times the actual cost of production because of the risk dealers and manufacturers have in production and distribution, so they often need to resort to crime to pay for their addiction. If drugs were legalized, the price would greatly reduce and addicts won t have to commit crime to support their habit. Some addicts don t make enough money to purchase their expensive fix, and feel they have no other choice but to break the law. If dugs were legalized and regulated, the price would go down drastically because there would be no more risk involved. A few grams of cocaine could be as easy to obtain and as affordable as a pack of cigarettes. Addicts would no longer need to commit crime to obtain their drugs. Some would say though, that drug related offences would still exist. For example, if drugs were legal for anyone over 21, there would be a demand for those younger, and drug related crime would still exist. Is this not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Evolution Of The Airplane Research Paper The first name that comes to mind when talking about the history of airplanes are The Wright Brothers. Orville and Wilbur were American inventors who are credited with the inventing, building, and flying the first self propelled airplane that could be controlled and could land safely. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers set for the skies and made the first controlled flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. From the first powered, manned, and controlled flight many aspects of the airplane has been improved while the basis of the control system pilots use is still intact. From the first airplane to the current ones that occupy the sky today have seen changes and improvements in avionics, the structure and materials that are being used, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Planes have shifted from wood and canvas structures to ones made from aluminum and other composite materials. Propeller driven planes are still around today but the engine used to spin the propeller has become more efficient and powerful. Jet engines have replaced many of the propeller driven engines on the bigger planes allowing the plane to fly faster and at greater altitudes. The incorporation of avionic systems like auto pilot, navigation, and communication has made the pilot s life easier when flying. Without these advances in the airplane people and/or goods wouldn t able to fly the great distances they do today. The airplane is used all over the world for varying reasons, commercial airline companies such as United, Delta, and Southwest fly passengers all over the world for business or leisure. Companies like UPS, Fedex, and the United State Postal Service use planes to deliver packages all over the world. The military uses planes in time of war, for reconnaissance missions, and to deliver aid to countries in times of need. Robotics has had some positive effects in the performance of certain jobs. It can help us complete difficult jobs that use materials that are not safe for humans to handle such as radioactive materials. A single robot can do heavy tasks that would require 10 people to complete. However, this savings in time and money for companies could result in loss of hours and wages for employees. Robotics is affecting many parts of our lives right now, from jobs, to house chores to medicine and a lot more. But which is really more effective and efficient? Humans or robots? For example, the iRobots that could clean a pool costs around $1,300 ( Mirra ). Another concern is that robots might be taking away our jobs (Tobe). Robots used to perform industrial jobs can help save labor hours and money (Tobe). It is a fact that robots complete jobs with higher quality. Jobs such as gluing, spraying paint, and trimming are performed faster, consistently and with better quality by robots (Sands, D.). This could have a negative effect on humans because it will take away many jobs, resulting in income loss. In addition, the initial investment to integrate robotics into businesses is substantial, especially when business owners are limiting their purchases to new robotic equipment (Tobe). He said that the cost of robotic automation and regular maintenance needs could potentially have a financial toll on the company. Employees will require training programs and learn how to interact with the new robotic equipment. This normally takes time and financial outlay. Robots will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Resurrection In Charles Dicken s A Tale Of Two Cities The concept of resurrection has always been an alluring subject in all cultures. Some believe this can be achieved through purification and repentance. Throughout the book, situations arise in which characters allude to rising again in a new life. The reader sees to what length people will go to bring about improvement in a beloved s life, or to achieve a much desired afterlife of one s own. In Charles Dicken s novel, A Tale of Two Cities, the idea of resurrection plays a huge role in the lives of many characters, including Dr. Manette, Sydney Carton, and Jerry Cruncher; the theme also adds to Dickens s message by illustrating the importance of love, morality, and faith. One very significant example is of Dr. Manette, who originally was traumatized as a result of his unfair imprisonment but eventually is recalled to life (Dickens 13). While Dr. Manette was in jail, he grappled exhaustingly every day trying to deal with his deteriorating mental state. His time spent in the Bastille is compared to him being buried alive for this reason; it was so inhumane and cruel that he felt dead. Dr. Manette was essentially being brought back to life with his release from prison. However, Dr. Manette s rebirth has just begun and does not become complete until he is reunited with his daughter (Dingyuan and Xiaohua 91). • 9. Exploring The Scars Of Centuries Essay Yael Pineda History M151C Professor E. Avila 8 June 2015 Exploring the Scars of Centuries Human slavery is a phenomenon that has been present since the times of the Romans and the Greeks. As a common misconception, societies, especially America s tend to believe that slavery was always black. Throughout a period of enslavement, human beings have again and again treated slavery and racial hierarchy as an act of the norm embedded in human behavior, which they use in order to make a clear distinction between them and us to justify such atrocious and immortal acts. With careful analysis of premature human enslavement, whiteness as beauty, the west and the rest, disparities between European ethnic groups, the study of anthropology, white slavery, linguistic movements, popular culture and different political institutions supported by America s governing law, the creation of the white race is drawn. With emphasis on the role played by Irish and Black Americans, the support of structural forces and cultural practices taken from historical examples drawn from the literary works of Harris, Painter, Roediger and Katznelson, slavery misconceptions, the distinction between races, the formation of the white race and its benefits and the homogeneity between black and slavery become apparent. Taking the broader history of human enslavement into account, slavery seen during the time of the Greeks and the Romans shows an enormous misconception of slavery: slavery was not ... Since I loved California and since I didn t want my parents to pay for the extra out of state tuition, I decided to apply to in state (California) schools, such as Universities of California, California State Universities, and Private Universities. As I was applying to colleges, I decided to apply as a Statistics major. Even though I have never taken statistics classes before, I knew Statistics would be the best option for me due to many reasons. First of all, I was really good at and loved math, and I thought a degree in Statistics would get me better jobs than a degree in Mathematics. Secondly, I enjoyed playing around with baseball data, baseball stats and thus, I thought I could be able to play around with more baseball data if I study statistics. Finally, during my senior year, I never knew what field (sciences, business, social studies, etc.) I really wanted to get into and I felt that statistics can be applied to basically any field and thus would not hurt me in the future when I find something I really wanted to do. After five months of crossing my fingers and being nervous about my college acceptance, I got all my acceptance letters and rejection letters. Other than San Diego State University, I was given three other universities to choose from. As a result, my spring break of senior year was dedicated to visiting Universities and deciding which college I should go to. After a week or two of thinking, I decided to do pursue my ... • 11. Individuality In The Virgin Suicides And Lolita The hyperbolic lack of individuality in The Virgin Suicides changes both the image of the boys and the girls. The narration is through the perspective of the boys as one entity, an indistinguishable chorus, rather than from separable perspectives. The chorus of boys views the girls as one entity separating but ultimately coming back together (130). They can only see the similarity of the girls: their similar hair, morals, upbringing, clothes, disposition, stature, age. This exemplifies that the girls themselves did not draw the boys in, but only the beauty of their sadness and the grandeur of their mass suicide. The girls had an inclination to maintain family togetherness and saw themselves as a both a human pact and each other s greatest confidants (216). The girls need to be close to one another foreshadowed the night of the four murders, when neither sister would leave without any other given sister. This approach is part of the pragmatics approach applying to literature. The application of pragmatics in literary analysis dates back to the 1970s. Although previous researchers like Morris (1938) had already proposed the connection between pragmatics and rhetoric, it was not until 1971 that Ohmann first touched the field by defining literature as a type of discourse. Later in 1976, Van Dijk first used the name Literary Pragmatics . When she heard it there came before her imagination the figure of a man standing beside a desolate rock on the seashore. He was naked. His attitude was one of hopeless resignation as he looked toward a distant bird winging its flight away from him. (47) All along the white beach, up and down, there was no living thing in sight. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The word desolate is used to describe the rock, offering up connotations of a barren, dismal lifelessness. The figure of the man is naked, or exposed and defenseless. His demeanor reflects hopeless resignation as he views a distant bird winging away from him. Here resignation can be taken to mean an unresisting acceptance of something as inescapable and as a surrender. Looking at this passage in this light, I cannot help but connect it with Robert. After finally vocalizing his love for Edna, Robert is in a way naked, free of the pretenses of socially conscious manners. Following this admission, however, Robert leaves off waiting for Edna, gives up on fulfilling his love, due, I think, in many ways to the social consequences that this would surely bring. Thus Robert too is hopelessly resigned to social moires which influence him to let his forbidden love wing away from him. This passage then foreshadows both Robert s resignation and Edna s own experience at the end of the novel. The second passage repeats several of the same images. On the beach there is no living thing in sight and Edna is absolutely alone. Thus the desolation and solitude from the first passage reappear. The figure of the bird is also depicted again, only in this instance the bird has a broken wing and reel[s] down, disabled towards the water, closer to the figure of Edna ... CAF was introduced to provide practitioners with children with an assessment tool that any frontline worker such as someone working in education, health, children s social care and housing can use. The CAF is specific to England but the same approach of working together is recommended in all the countries of the United Kingdom. The aim of the CAF is to ensure assessment is timely and holistic and that children with a range of needs do not have repeat referrals to and assessments by a number of agencies, which could cause unacceptable delays to the child s chance of receiving services. CAF is normally completed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Working together in conjunction with other agencies is clearly an important principle of successful child protection work. Agencies need to share information, work together to protect children and support families, in order to improve parenting to a safe standard. All practitioners involved with children have a role. A child s key person could arrange to meet the parents and the health visitor for example to discuss the extent to which a child is healthy, safe from harm, learning and developing well, socialising and making positive relationships with others and not significantly impaired by the effects of poverty. This type of meeting is called Team Around the Child (TAC). There is a pre assessment checklist for the CAF which early years practitioners can consult before calling such a meeting. Meetings like this and the process of drawing up a CAF are voluntary. Early years practitioners should only proceed with the informed consent of parents. By bringing together information from a health visitor, the early years practitioner and the parent in a TAC, an assessment of needs can be made in areas such as development of the child, parents and carers and family ... • 17. The First Surgical Robot, By Dr. James Mcewen And Geof... The first surgical robot was called the Arthrobot, developed and used for the first time in 1983 in Canada. The team that developed this robot was led by Dr. James McEwen and Geof Auchinlek and was in collaboration with an orthopedic surgeon by the name of Dr. Brian Day. There was even a movie produced by National Geographic on robotics that featured the Arthrobot. Around the same time, other medical robots were developed including a robotic arm that performed eye surgery and another that acted as an operating assistant by handing surgeons instruments by responding to voice commands. In 1985, another robot called the Puma 560 was used to place needles for brain biopsies using CT guidance. The use for different robots began growing more and more as the years moved on. This now seemed to be the standard and the future of the medical field. In 1988, Imperial College London developed the Probot. It was used to perform prostatic surgery. Another four years goes by and in 1992 another robot called Robodoc, designed and developed by Integrated Surgical Systems was used to mill out fittings in the femur (the largest bone in the human body) for hip replacements. As you can see the beginning of surgical robotics was a very busy time in several different developments. In ten years, these developments and different robots have come a long way. The beginning robots open new doors in the medical profession from developers all the way to the doctors. After 1992 further development ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Pros And Cons Of Police Report I think that the pros and cons of police using reports when they testify is that one pro is that they will be informed on what all happened and not just their side to the story. I also think that is a con at the same time since they are able to use their reports to be prepared and that also gives them ample amount of time to change the story just a little to coincide with other officers testimony. In one article that I found it stated that a homicide detective said he routinely takes his case files home at least one week before trial and reviews everything. A robbery detective said he likes to study the file and try to plan how to respond to questions I think will be asked. It s like chess: What move is the defense attorney going to make? ... The k means clustering problem can be described as following: Given a set of n data points in d dimensional space R^d and an integer k. Find a set of k points/centers in R^d, such that the mean squared distance from each data point to its nearest centre (one of the k centers) is minimized. Paper Summaries: A local search approximation algorithm for k means clustering (2004) The paper considered whether there exists a simple and practical approximation algorithm for k means clustering. It brings up the classical tradeoff between run time and approximation factor. A local improvement heuristic based on swapping centers in and out that yields a (9 + ϵ) approximation algorithm is presented. The paper also shows that any approach based on performing a fixed number of swaps achieves an approximation factor of at least (9 ϵ) in all sufficiently high dimensions by providing example. In summary, the approximation factor is almost tight for algorithms based on methods that perform fixed number swaps as shown by the paper. The effectiveness of Lloyd type methods for the k means problem (2006) This paper show that if the data satisfies a natural condition on separation/clusterability, then a near optimal clustering result can be expected as various Lloyd style methods would have great performance in such setting. • 20. Archetype In Mean Girls This is girls world, all of the fightings had to be sneaky. Said by Lindsay Lohan in the movie, Mean Girls. The entertainment and fairytales stories have a tendency to have women going against each other. Cinderella has mainly had her stepmother and step sisters keeping her busy with chores for twenty four hours. While Rapunzel is stuck in a high tower alone because of a witch. Not only classic fairy tales have this pattern, but songs have this same formula. Notably, Taylor Swift is known for her bitter reputation of calling out her ex boyfriends, but also writes songs calling out women. Lastly, movies will show women fighting against each other for the comedy effect especially Mean Girls. In stories, women characters tend to destroy other female archetypes for power. The classic story of Cinderella has women degrading each other. She lives with her stepmother and stepsisters. After her father died, she became her slave to them. The archetype of the mother is that she is a witch. Her archetype is a witch because they tend to manipulate the princess badly. She abused Cinderella and later on tells her that she can not go to the ball. As for Cinderella, her archetype would be the princess. She is the princess because of acts like the damsel in distress. Cinderella is docile when her family bossing around. Her stepmother is controlling her freedom. Another example that is similar to Cinderella is Rapunzel. The story of Rapunzel is also a classic fairytale where a witch ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Full Metal Jacket Film Analysis Film Analysis Within every man resides good and evil; which quality manifests itself is determined by how one is raised and views the world. Stanley Kubrick s film Full Metal Jacket takes the concept of good or evil in man and shows how war, the marines, and government blur soldiers ideas of right or wrong. By injection of propaganda from these sources a misidentity is created within the solider. Once this misidentity has taken place it is the soldiers job to figure out what he is: a killing machine as he has been trained, or a bringer of peace to a war torn nation. A soldiers identity is stripped of him the second he enters boot camp. It first begins with the shaving of the head which likens boot camp to brain surgery, then continues ... Joker, however, redeems himself in the climax of the movie with the sniper scene. Even when the sniper has killed three of his fellow soldiers Joker does not have the ability to take her life. To the other men she is just another VC fighter trying to kill them. Joker, however, sees her for who she is: a young women of about eighteen and just as human as he and the rest of his squad. A clear signal of this is when the sniper gets shot once and all the marines are gathered around her. While the sniper is lying on the ground praying as she is dying, Joker asks the question, What do we do about her? The only response he receives is, Fuck her, let her rot. Here is where we see a clear distinction of what Joker has become compared to the rest of the soldiers. Though he is still accepted by all of his fellow soldiers he is reassured that he is different from the rest. Evil, which is represented by the other soldiers, is in constant struggle with some of the men s conscience while it has taken full control of others. In the scene where Joker and Rafterman are riding in a helicopter to the jungle, they ride with a gunner who is disconnected from reality. Rose is glad that the minister [is] not going to mention God (14), but instead the man starts to harass her, a far more grotesque action, bringing a sense of irony to the story. At this point, Rose starts to question the ethics of society, and this can be seen not just as confusion, in the context of the story, but also as a further exploration of youthful bewilderment about established values from a young age such as mutual respect and the integrity which adults are expected to uphold. Even towards the end of the story, Rose could never understand what recommended [the minister] when she decided to self pollute at a later stage of her life. The lack of answers is the very reason why Rose attempts to consider multiple perspectives at once in hope for more answers, motivating her development through adolescence. Finally, Rose develops greater self awareness, a greater awareness of others and the ability to consider multiple perspectives, as shown by her mental consideration of the possible repercussions for accusing the minister of harassment or asking him to take his hand away. Her evidence of awareness for herself and others is demonstrated through her inability to ask the minister to take his hands away. • 25. Similarities Between Baphomet And Abraxas There are certain similarities between Baphomet and Abraxas and the later probably influenced the former. This is something that the Templars themselves may have recognized. Abraxas seems to have played a central role in the Gnostic cult of Basilides in the second century A.D. Basilides was an Alexandrian mystic and teacher who for all intents and purposes can only be extracted from heresiological sources from the Church Fathers. He is either depicted as a disciple of Menander or Saturninus (both of whom belonged to the Simonian schools of Simon Magus in Syria and Alexandria, Egypt) or an interpreter of St. Peter named Glaucias. And it is interesting to note that Basilides is said to come out of these two supposed diametrically opposed traditions (being Simon Magus and St. Peter). Basilides was more than likely the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Faith was an inborn assent of the soul and is equated to gnosis . It wasn t a matter of instruction or indoctrination. It was a sort of nature, in fact. Perhaps faith and knowledge for Basilides was the same thing. Basilides, therefore, had a lot in common with other Gnostics and eventually with the later Protestant John Calvin as they all shared the idea of predestined salvation. The three nature doctrine attests to this. The elect were those who had the capacity for faith, and considered themselves strangers or aliens to the world and long for salvation in Christ and the transcendent. Those who are incapable of faith, who feel perfectly at home in the world of matter are what Basilides calls worthless or swine and dogs. Ouch! • 28. Parental Discipline And Child Abuse How many times have you had a conversation with someone about how you were raised? I can guarantee that at least one person mentioned that they were disciplined through punishments or maybe this person might actually be you. The person who was forced to deal with punishments as a child most likely became more disciplined earlier than everyone else and most likely still is. To be clear, the intended definition of punishments to be used is a penalization for committing an act that would be considered unacceptable in the eyes of the parent i.e swearing, fighting, being disrespectful, etc. This is also known as parental discipline. Although it may not seem like it there is a clear boundary separating parental discipline from child abuse. Parental discipline is intended for the betterment of the child, while child abuse is for the parent or guardian s sick, demented pleasure. This clarification allows discussion to begin concerning the main point. Even though it could be seen as abusive in the eyes of the public, parental discipline is necessary for a child to become more mature at an early age. Not only will this early maturity allow the child to develop a sense of right as well as becoming more of a selfless person, it also starts molding them into a productive member of society with their own set of responsibilities. The first reason for why parental discipline is necessary when raising a child, is that it makes a child grow up realizing that the world doesn t revolve around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although the procedure is an efficient method to correct eyesight, there are many controversial topics surrounding the conduction of the surgery and debates on whether the procedure would need to be limited in clinics and hospitals due to the health risks. After the surgery there is around 5% chance of experiencing long term and permanent side effects and 0.37% of blindness (Wachler, 2016). In Britain, an estimate of 15,000 people undergo LASIK each year (Wachler, 2016), meaning that around 750 people each year in Britain will experience the long term issues of LASIK and 55 will be blinded or severely injured. While several clinics offer the opportunity to provide LASIK surgery, the consultation processes often omit the risks and side effects in detail which can encourage the desire to undergo surgery (Squire, 2010). The main causes of the issue occur due to poor judgement of the surgeon during the consultation process when diagnosing for suitability for the surgery. The process for diagnosing the suitability for patients to undergo LASIK surgery include many factors and requirements which will be identified by the surgeon during the consultation process. The thickness of the cornea, diameter of pupils, refractive error, and health can all effect the likelihood of risk during the process when the ultraviolet laser will instead cause defects and degeneration. The spinal cord consists of a superficial White matter and a deep Gray matter. The white matter consists of myelinated axons, which form nerve tracts and the Gray matter consists of neuron cell bodies, dendrites and axons. The motor fibers innervate certain muscles, while the sensory fibers innervate certain areas of skin. A skin area innervated by the sensory fibers of a single nerve root is known as a dermatome. A group of muscles primarily innervated by the motor fibers of a single nerve root is known as a myotome. Myotomes are necessary for proper motor functioning; making it possible to bend the knee, straighten the elbow, flex fingers, and manipulate other muscle groups. Nerve fibers allowing for the sensation of touch or feeling pain to a corresponding sensory sector of the skin are dermatomes. These nerves originate from the spine and therefore can be useful in spinal injuries to evaluate the level of deficit. Pain, lack of sensation, or abnormal functioning of dermatomes can help pinpoint spinal nerve damage.
