Applied Ecology
Aims/Objective
A.E aim to relate ecological
concepts, theories, principals,
models, and methods to
solving of environmental
problems, including the
management of natural
resources, such as land,
energy, food or biodiversity
It is the scientific field that studies how
concepts, theories, models, or method,
of fundamental ecology can be applied
to solve environmental problems.
Ecological management of resources
It is how communities manage the supply or access to
the natural resources they depend on for their
survival and growth.
Ecological management is to consider the entirety of
an ecological system when working to conserve and
restore natural resources and ecological services for
present and future generations.
JUDICIOUS USE AND
AVOIDING WASTAGE OF
NATURAL RESOURCES.
LONG TERM PLANNING
FOR THE USE OF NATURAL
RESOURCES
TO ENSURE EQUITABLE
DISTRIBUTION OF
RESOURCES
TO CONTROL THE
DAMAGE CAUSED BY
ENVIRONMENT
Why is Management of Natural Resources Important?
• To maintain the stability of the ecosystem.
• To prevent further damage to the
environment.
• Avoiding over-consumption of natural
resources
1.Forest and its Ecological Management
Forests provide
• wood, timber, food, leaves etc.,
• environmental benefits.
• shelter to birds, squirrels and insets,
• control of air pollution,
• mitigation of green house effect etc.
 Also safeguard the economy from flood,
drought
Management
Management through intensive plantation by afforestation arid social forestry
The available forests should be protected by taking necessary steps.
Steps should be taken to prevent the occurrence of forest fire.
The use of fuel woods should be discouraged and it should be replaced and promoted by the use of biogas plants and smoke less solar
Chula.
There should be intensive and extensive social forestry programs with the active involvement of the people.
The indiscriminate felling of trees and shifting cultivation should be strictly banned.
Protection of wild life should be ensured through strict enforcement
There should be more number of National parks, Sanctuaries and Biodiversity reserves to conserve flora and fauna.
The plants like Acacia, Eucalptus and Leucaena should be grown on wastelands and degraded lands which will provide fuel woods.
There should be incentives from Government side to make the maximum involvement of tribals for the proper management of forest
resources.
2.Water and its Ecological Management:
• Water is indispensable for the sustenance of life
on earth.
• It is highly essential for drinking, cooking,
washing, irrigation, industrial uses, generation of
power, navigation, recreation etc.
• In order to meet the increasing demand of
population growth, water is over utilized and
polluted.
Management
Process includes
planning,
producing,
distributing,
efficient use of
water resources
Drip Irrigation System
Desalination
• Process of removing salts or
other minerals and
contaminants from seawater,
brackish water, and
wastewater
• Increasingly common solution
to obtain fresh water for
human consumption and
Desalination Process
3.Soil and its Ecological Management
• It is very important natural
resource
• All the nutrient requirements
of plants
• over exploitation of top soil
by the processes like
deforestation, overgrazing,
unplanned urbanization etc.,
• the fertile soil is lost
Management
4.Minerals and its Ecological Management
Minerals are non-renewal
resources obtained from earth
crust by the process of mining.
Management
Ecofriendly.
Associated element with the mineral
recovered as by-products.
Optimum and economical use
Suitable methodology of mining
Rare and costly mineral replaced by
others which are easily available and
cheaper.
Use scraps and reused after suitable
treatments.
5.Energy resource and its Ecological Management
Energy resources are all forms of
fuels used in the modern world,
either for heating, generation of
electrical energy, or for other
forms of energy
6.Wildlife and its Ecological Management
Wildlife refers to
undomesticated animal species,
but has come to include all
organisms that grow or live wild
in an area.
IMPORTANCE OF WILDLIFE
• Economic value : Timber, fur, tusk, ivory, leather, honey etc.
• Scientific value : Gene pool for the scientists to carry breeding
programmers in agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery.
• Maintain Ecological Balance.
• Eco - Tourism.
Extensive hunting, fishing,
trapping etc. Should be
banned.
The rare species allowed to
live under protected
environment.
Restriction on export of rare
animal and plant species and
their products.
Threatened species protected,
through habitat management
by ensuring food, water,
shelter etc.
From diseases protection,
proper sanitation measures.
There should be strict laws to
check extensive hunting.
7.Agriculture and its Ecological Management
• Science of cultivating the soil, growing crops and raising livestock.
• Preparation of plant and animal products for people to use and their
distribution to markets
• It provides food, raw materials for clothes etc.
• Plays a major role in economic growth and development.
• A number of steps have been taken to increase crop productivity and
to store the agricultural products in a proper manner.
Fertility increased by using bio
fertilizers.
Farmers sselect high yielding and
disease resistant varieties.
Bio insecticides and bio herbicides
used to check weeds and pests.
The containers should be clean and
dry.
Kept at dry, cool and well ventilated
space.
Storage site away from rats and
insects.
The containers should be perfectly
Container material should not be
toxic to food grain
Weather modification
Principals of rain making
Cloud Seeding
Cloud seeding is a scientific
process that improves a
cloud's ability to make rain
or snow, as well as control
other weather events e.g
fog
