1. Analysis of two indie/rock double
page spreads from a music magazine
2. First dps
• In this dps the right hand side is taken up by one image which
continues onto the left page also. The left hand page is separated in
to 3 columns with another pic on the bottom left .
• The purpose of this article was to inform readers about Shaun Ryder.
• This article confirms to the style of house as at the bottom left is the
page number which runs through out the magazine, the text is in the
same font with the colours of the text being red and black.
• The title of the article is ‘freeze frame’ this is effective as it uses
alliteration which gives a sense of continuity, its also effective as
there is a camera on one of the letters, and cameras take still
pictures which are frozen still.
• Conventions are used are a drop cap on the O, gutters and margins,
there are quotes throughout the article from the artist and there are
captions on the pictures to inform what is going on in the picture
• The picture to text ratio is fairly even the picture on the right gives a
clear focus and the picture on the right breaks up the text so their
isn’t an information overload. This is effective as the reader can still
read the article because it is displayed in columns but the pictures
break it up.
• The images used are effective as they link together and were
obviously y taken at the same set, the colours are neutral and run
throughout each picture, the picture on the right is a medium long
shot which is effective and are commonly used in magazines and on
the left is also a medium long shot and we can see more space
behind them which gives us more information about the
surroundings.
• The tone of this article is friendly and laid back, its quite casual just
like the style of indie.
3. • Trow and one here is one column on this dps , the left hand side is a
picture and so it the top half of the right side, this shows that there
are more pictures which will attract the reader as there isnt loads
of text.
• The prpose of this article is to review a concer that happened
previously, thats why there are so many pictures as it shows how
many people went and puts it into context.
• This dps conforms to the house of style as it has the page number
and the Q thas on the front cover in the bottom left. It also uses
similar colours to the front cover like red, white and yellow. The
font the heading and subheading is in the same font as the writing
on the front cover. It also has the same dropcap as other dps which
show continuity throughout the magazine.
• The title of the article is ‘THE GREAT ESCAPE’ this is effective as it
makes the reader thinks that the concert was an espace from
reality and that if they were there they could have had an amazing
time.
• Conventions used are things like the drop cap and the quote from
the artist on the left page which makes the reader feel like the
artist is saying it to them.
• The picture is to text ratio is ¾ pictures ¼ text and the text is mainly
the heading, there is only a bit of text as the images sum up how
good the concert was cause many people attended it.
• The images used are of the stage with all of the people infron t, this
makes the concert seem successful, it links to the genre because
indie/rock music is often performed at concerts , the other picture
is of the main artist, this would appeal to the genre as they will
most likely know who he is and be interested in seeing him.
• The tone of the magazine is very informal it talks to the reader like
they’re friends and uses some swear words that are blurred out,
this makes the magazine seem like a normal conversation but still
isnt offensive because the curses have **on them.
