2. Main image.
Firstly the DPS needs to be eye catching, this is
easily done with a main image, the main image
usually fills one page but can sometimes be used as a
background with text on top but here you can see
the images take up a whole page, this makes the
article more eye catching and draws in the reader.
The next thing the audience will see is either the
headline if there is on as some articles don’t instead
they use a pull quote, this is pulled from the article
and enlarged used as a title for the article. As you
can see in both of these images.
Just below the pull quote will be a stand first, this is
a short intro to the article.
3. The main image doesn’t always follow direct mode of address, direct mode of
address will depend on the article, so if the article is about a specific person
focusing on their future the main image may include direct mode of address
where as an article about a new band loving the attention of the press ect…
their might not be any direct ode of address because it isn’t really needed in
this image.
The main image can also be the band or artist actually performing in a gig,
this is again to follow what the article may be like.
Finally the image could also be taken in a studio, this is the most typical
because it will follow Mise en scene closely.
4. Mise en scene.
The location is a main factor of the main image, because the article is based
off the image, the location will determine who will read this article, for
example if it is about focus the image will be taken in a studio with a white
background with full focus on the artist. This will draw in the reader knowing
what the article is about because of the image.
Props are a big part in these images too, because the images can be of the
artist performing their will be musical instruments in the images too.
Even though the images can be of the artist performing a majority will be of a
plain background to put the focus on the artist, the makeup will bring out the
actors facial expressions but most importantly is the artists look…
If the magazine is indie rock, the artist will have to look indie for the reader
to be drawn into this article so costume is also a big factor.
5. House style.
Again the DPS like the contents and front cover will all have to follow a house
style used through out the magazine. This will ensure the colour, size and font
of the text will be the same throughout the magazine, making it look more
presentable and professional. A magazine will typically follow about three
font styles and colours to add variety but not to confuse. The DPS will follow
a three or four column style, this can also include the image but the text will
typically be in three columns adding formality. If there is any gaps they are
typically filled with inserts, these will images of different articles, questions
to the readers, they just help fill any space because gaps in the articles look
unprofessional.
Because of the three to four column layout there is a clean simple layout of
the writing making it easy to read.
6. Drop capital.
Overlapping.
This is simple, the first letter of the article will be bigger, bolder, a different
colour, or even a different font. This is a simple way of showing the reader
where to start the article.
Overlapping happens in DPS this is just to make the article look less formal,
the main image can overlap onto the next page, or the pull quote can go
across the middle of the pages to add informality and to draw the reader in,
this happens because if everything is in order in the three columns ect, then
if something spills across pages you are drawn to that to read it and the pull
quote is a quote from the band or artist to draw you in the article therefore
making you want to read on.
7. By-line.
This is what it says on the tin… it is a line explaining who the article is about.
They are typically placed underneath the stand first but can also be placed at
the bottom of the article. The by line will have the name of the writer and
the photographer of the image.
The DPS can also have the date in the bottom corner, it may have the issue
number of the magazine at the bottom middle of the page but this is mainly
typical of Q and finally the page number will typically be on the right side of
the page either the top or bottom of the page.
Issue number and date.
