“Oh GOSH! Reflecting on Hackteria's Collaborative Practices in a Global Do-It...
Analysis of contents page
1. Analysis of two Indie/Rock contents
pages from music magazines
2. Analysis of contents page
• This contents page is effective as it has a column with all of the bands
included in the magazine and where to find them, it also has a column on the
right that’s bigger with more interesting thing you can find in the magazine.
There’s a tow at the bottom with a news-style article about a band as well.
• The ratio of pictures to text is effective as even though the picture is quite
big there is still quite a lot of information which shows that if you buy the
magazine there’s going to be a lot to read and that its worth the money.
• This is consistent with the front cover as the text is red and yellow again
likewise on the front cover and the fonts are the same, with the name of the
magazine being at the top still. Also there is a big picture of a band which is
similar to the cover page as there’s also a big picture of a band on there.
• This magazine appears exclusive as it contains a short news article, and the
news is always changing so it makes it seem like you can only hear about it
now and its important. Also is has a subcategory ‘Live!’ and it’s the only
heading with a exclamation point so it makes it seem like you need to buy it
to see who’s performing right now so you’re up to date with the music.
• The picture is effective and is keeping with the genre of music as the picture
of quite dark and the people in the picture stereotypically look quite like a
good representation of rock music as they have electric guitars.
• Linguistic features used are that at the bottom of the contents page there is
a monthly subscription offer and by using the work ‘just’ makes the
magazine seem cheap for what it is and makes it seem like a really good deal
which would make the audience want to buy the magazine.
• The caption that goes with the picture uses words like ‘everyone’ which
makes you feel left out if you didn’t know about it so you would want to read
on and get involved. On the bottom right it shows that there is a gig guide
on pg58 which is clever because the target audience would be interested in
gigs and by putting it further on in the magazine encourages them to read on
and look further into the magazine.
• Overall the contents page is highly effective as it tells the reader where
everything is located in the magazine and also tells them where all of the key
information and different subjects in the magazine are.
3. Analysis of contents page
• The rule of thirds has been used here to separate the text and
the image with 2 columns on both sides and picture
information in the middle which is similar to the front cover
of this magazine which shows continuity throughout the
magazine.
• Overall there is a lot of text but it is effective as it is broken up
into different sections the picture is effective as it reflects
what this issue of the magazine is about.
• This is consistent with the front cover as the layout of text
and pictures is the same and the colours of the text are the
same. The information is also broken up around the page like
the front cover.
• In the middle of the page the picture says ‘everything you
need to hear this year’ this makes the magazine seem
exclusive as it has all of the upcoming music and would make
you want to buy it so you know everything there is to know
and can be aware of what’s to come.
• The images are effective as they are pictures of pages within
the magazine which gives you a small insight as to what you
could be buying into, also because there are six of them it
shows the magazine has a lot to talk about and is worth your
time and money.
• The magazine uses direct address ‘everything you need to
hear this year’ this makes effective as it makes you feel like
you need it and that everything in the magazine is relevant to
you.
• Everything is easy to locate from the contents page because
everything is displayed briefly with page numbers. All of the
bands included are on the left and all of the sub categories
are on the right.
