Our Journey through the City of Paris at Night
Paris is a beautiful city during the day, but at night, it changes. The first thing that is seen are all the
lights from the shops, buildings and streetlights. These lights brighten up Paris and give it a different
but just as beautiful perspective at night. The Eiffel Tower, one of the top attractions in Paris that
tourists come to see can be described as an iron, lace work of art, and the most recognized structure in
the world, and at night with the glow of its lights, it stands out like a guiding lighthouse. We could see
this beautiful tower wherever we stood day or night. My choir group was invited to sing in some of
the cathedrals in Paris. One night after we had a concert and had dinner, our tour guide gave us an
option of either staying on the bus or getting off and taking a tour down the Seine River to see the
Eiffel Tower at night. If we should choose this option, we needed to find a different way back to the
hotel as the bus driver was not going to come back for us. My family and a few others chose to take
the tour down the river. On the boat, we could see different buildings, museums and the Eiffel Tower.
On the tour, we also passed under the famous bridges in Paris. Two of the buildings I remember
viewing were the Louvre, and Norte Dame. From the boat, I could also see the Louvre pyramid which
sits in the courtyard of the Louvre Palace. The Louvre Pyramid is a large glass and metal pyramid,
surrounded by three smaller pyramids. The

Introduction
Many people today have their thoughts on how the Earth was created. Christians take a biblical
perspective of how the universe was created by a creator. One thought that Christians believe is that
God created the earth and accomplished this in six days and rested on the seventh day. This is the
model of how a week is set up and the model that we currently follow. Jon W. Green states though
differences of opinion exist for various doctrinal issues within Christianity, few are more divisive than
controversies surrounding the days of creation and the age of the Earth. As stated previously many
people have thoughts and are curious as to how the Earth itself came into existence. When it comes to
the scientific community there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Mortenson, 2011) Young Earth Creationist believe in the idea of the Hebrew word Yom. (Morris,
2011) This word translates to mean a literal day and is used in Genesis to describe each day of
creation. We as Christians must take the Bible as true, this being the whole bible including the Old
Testament. In regards to the age of the Earth, young earth creationist take Genesis 5 as a genealogy of
the Earth. The genealogies of Genesis 5 as well as 11 give people an idea of the years and happenings
from Adam to Abraham. Scholars can mostly agree that Abraham lived about 2000 BC. All of these
facts then set the date of creation at approximately 6000 years ago. (Mortenson, 2011)
Old Earth View
In response to the young earth six day creation of the Earth idea, secular scientist have developed the
idea of the Big Bang theory. According to the big bang theory, the universe began by expanding from
a minuscule volume that possessed extremely high density as well as extreme temperatures. Initially
the universe was significantly smaller than a pore on your skin. (Takahashi, 2000 ) It is thought that
this happened about 10 20 billion years ago. According to Yuki D. Takahasi (2000) in his article Big
Bang: How did the Universe begin? He states 3 main observations that point to truth in the Big Bang
Theory. Number one is astronomers have found that the universe continues to expand which means
that the

The Great House, By Frank Herbert
Literature has gone through many eras, with each changing it in its own way, but it can be argued that
the era that changed literature the most was the modern era. Dune by Frank Herbert is a science fiction
novel of the modern era and fits the modernist theme to a tee. The modern era, like any other literary
era, can be categorized by the attributes that modernist literature contain. Dune, being a member of the
literary era, is riddled with such attributes. Dune is part of the modern literary era, as shown by it
following the general theme and properties of that era.
In works of the modern literary era figures of authority are often shown as untrustworthy, this property
is clearly visible in Dune. The great houses, a source of authority in the Dune universe, are widely
seen as untrustworthy and suspicious. An assassination attempt is aimed at main character Paul
Atreides. The Atreides, the great house the main character belongs to, believe it was the Harkonnen s,
another of the great houses, who planned it, showing their distrust and suspicion of them. Duke Leto
says and were Harkonnen creatures almost to a man. They have tried to take the life of my son! (Dune,
pg. 126) showing how his distrust in them causes him to question their humanity. This shows how the
great houses, Dune s form of an authority figure, are seen as not trustworthy even by the other great
houses. The great houses are not to be trusted, showing how authority in Dune isn t always to be
trusted, but

American Personal Space
In American society, personal space is valued and is seen as a right that is expected to be given to
everyone. The physical closeness allowed between individuals is determined by the degree of their
relationship. In a public environment such as restaurants and other eating establishments, people
sitting together in a table often are familiar and comfortable enough with each other to allow
themselves to be near in proximity to other people. Those people sitting together may be family
members, friends, or acquaintances willing to get to know one another. Because of this norm that we
carry in the United States, rarely do we in real life see someone voluntarily sitting with a total stranger
in randomness without the other finding the person

Analysis Of Alice Walker s The Color Purple
Thriving or Surviving: An In Depth look at Alice Walker s The Color Purple One might think that a
childhood of sexual violence, emotional abuse, and rape would make a character dark and embittered;
however, in Alice Walker s The Color Purple, the author explores the thin gray line that stands
between surviving and thriving. Manipulating her characters so that they are constantly crossing the
line back and forth. It is her protagonist, Celie, who imbues the reader with a pondering of the human
condition, allowing for an introspective look at empowerment. Framing this bildungsroman in the
form of letters, Walker s dramatic shifts reveal the religious and sexual bondage the protagonist is
chained to. In this novel, Walker uses the pain, sorrow, and abuse of Celie to demonstrate the constant
struggle that is waged between surviving and thriving in every shift of her life.
While Celie s childhood remains an abusive saga, one will find an undying sense of optimism.Walker
explores Celie s childhood which is lived primarily in survival mode. Celie s brutal upbringing gives
her a maternal authority, as the reader continuously sees the absence and resentment from her mother
And now I feels sick every time I be the one to cook. Mama always fussing at me and looking at me
(Walker, 1). A rape scene is used to open the book, which reveals that Celie has been impregnated by
her father. While the main character is unaware of her condition, her mother is completely aware. As

Cold War Effects On America
Cold War:
Cold War can be characterized as the political and the military pressure between the two super powers
USA and USSR, Western and the Eastern coalition separately. They never went to coordinate war with
one another yet they discovered options available to satisfy their cold war plans. It helped in the
development of Asian American groups in United States of America. Proxy wars turned into the way
to this advancement. Southeast Asian Americans were effected by these intermediary wars in a
positive way. Immigration and naturalization was attained by Southeast Asian America groups with
the assistance of proxy wars. Three intermediary wars basically made an impact on the waves of

to the large number of immigrants to be immigrated. Despite of the given name, Angel Island was
different from Ellis Island. On one side, Ellis Island processed large number of immigrants and
welcomed them in the states immediately, while Angel Island on other side didn t welcomed many
immigrants, especially, Chinese immigrants. This is because of the implementation of The Chinese
Exclusion Act in 1882 and its periodical updating till 1943, which lead to hamper the entry of Chinese
Immigrants to the United States. The large number of Chinese coming for the gold rush in America
were restricted by the immigration officers at Angel Island. Immigration authorities confined recently
arrived Chinese individuals while they decided their qualification to enter the United States.

Abstract
This experiment was performed to determine the melting point ranges of standard substances, urea
cinnamic acid mixtures, and unknown substances. The melting point ranges were measured by
observing the temperatures in which the substances began and completed liquefying in the Stuart
SMP10 Melting Point Apparatus. The melting points ranges of pure naphthalene, urea, cinnamic acid,
sulfanilamide, 4 toluic acid, and anthracene were 82 82, 132 133, 134 135, 164 166,183 184, and 216
219°C. Melting points were obtained for urea cinnamic acid mixtures. The melting point ranges of
1:4. 1:1, and 4:1 mixtures of urea cinnamic acid by mass were 103 113, 103 104, and 107 127°C
respectively. Finally, the melting point ranges for unknown substance A were around 134 136°C and
the ranges for unknown substance B were around 135 139°C. Based on the melting points, the
unknown substances were identified as urea and cinnamic acid. Overall, the results of the experiments

generations. These myths ranged from Poseidon, who controlled the sea, and Hades, who controlled
the underworld. Just like these Gods, a teacher at Crawford County Jr. /Sr. High School has many
qualities like them. Mr. Boone has heroic God qualities that are going on quest to help other out,
fighting monsters, and superhuman. One of the first qualities is that Mr. Boone is on a quest to help

The Trials And Tribulations Of Changing Jobs
The Trials and Tribulations of Changing Jobs
There is a point in a Soldiers career where you have to make a decision that best suits you. In 2007,
the Army Acquisitions Corps (ACC) offered me the opportunity to be a part of something new. Having
already been actively involved in the acquisition community, providing for the war fighter, and feeling
a sense of accomplishment in doing so, there was an internal sense of pride in being a part of the
newest Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) in the United States Army, 51C; Acquisition,
Logistics, and Technology Non Commissioned Officer (ALTNCO). Making the transition into a new

San Antonio, 2007, my wife and I arrived in Texas. The transportation office calls to inform me of my
delivery date, which happened to be the same day I signed in off leave. Knowing how long it takes
most moving companies to show up and off load, I took the initiative to call the unit and inform the
sergeant major of the situation. As a senior Non commissioned Officer, I do not ask for much.
However, in informing my new sergeants major of the current situation, there was not an offer to
extend my leave, for even a day. This wasn t something I was accustomed to. Thus, I followed orders
and finished with transportation and signed into the unit immediately afterwards. Although he may
have had good reason, his action (or lack thereof) set the tone for what was to follow.
Reception
My arrival to the unit was a little chaotic and confusing. The soon to be brigade staff was minimally
manned, and we were co located with whom would soon be formerly known as the Army Contracting
Agency (ACA). The ACA was primarily a civilian organization, and did not have a functional staff
that could receive and in process personnel. Therefore, we had to rely on U.S. Army South for
support. When I asked my sponsor when our staff sections were going to be established and do we
currently have any in bound personnel to fill those positions, all I got was That s you! At this point, I
then realized that the

Why Video Games Is Well, Obviously Because It s Fun
Why Play Video Games
Well, obviously because it s fun. Gaming is just another kind of entertainment, after all. However,
there are many kinds of games with each their own reason why I play them. Often times, I play
different kinds of games for entirely different reasons. Most of the time I play it for either the story or
for the challenge. However, I play various kinds of games and there are various different reasons why
I play them. Moreover despite popular beliefs that game causes violence, there are further benefits
from playing a game than just a simple entertainment.
I play adventure games to experience stories and escapades. There are other sources of stories, such as
books and TV shows, but video game is the only kind of entertainment which offers interactive
storytelling. I don t want to just passively learn about stories. I want to immerse in it, and try to live
with various characters inside those stories. I want to be an active participant of that story. One of the
best games I ve played which provides me with a good story is The Walking Dead . It s a game about
living after a zombie apocalypse. Players play as Lee, a guy who s trying to survive with his group of
survivors. Early in the game, he meets Clementine, a little girl who was separated from her parents. As
they try to live their lives, there will be a lot of thought provoking choices which can actually change
what would happen later. For example, due to the lack of food you need to choose who among your

Fascism, Nietzsche, Power
Fascism, Nietzsche, Power
Nietzsche s writing about power dynamics and the creation of the strong and weak, the good and the
bad, is very closely intertwined with the workings of fascist ideology, and how it understands itself to
be strong. In a Nietzschean sense, however, fascism ultimately fails to be truly strong because it
creates itself as a reformed moralistic approach to power, rather than freeing itself from moralism.
More specifically, the construction of the Jews as weak by those who subscribe to fascist ideology,
and the portrayal of themselves as strong, is almost wholly antithetical Nietzsche s actual position
concerning power dynamics. Instead, as Nietzsche lays out in The Genealogy of Morals, real power is
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nietzsche explains this struggle as a slave morality, which can only survive if it has a force that acts
against it so its existence is justified; the role of opposition to the slave morality is occupied by the
strong. He writes In order to exist at all, slave morality from the outset always needs an opposing,
outer world; in physiological terms, it needs external stimuli in order to act its action is fundamentally
reaction (Genealogy of Morals 22). The morality of the strong is precisely the antithesis of this: it
justifies itself by reaffirming the strength of itself they justify their behaviors by reaffirming their own
lives, not by placing their lives in juxtaposition with the lives of the weak. Nietzsche expands this,
saying The opposite is the case with the aristocratic mode of evaluation: this acts and grows
spontaneously, it only seeks out its antithesis in order to affirm itself more thankfully and more
joyfully (Genealogy 22).
What fascists fail to recognize, however, is that fascism does not transcend the need to fight an
opposing force it does not exist without some external stimuli to which the fascists are always
responding. The Jews are constructed as the epitome of this slave morality ; they are the weak people
subjected by the aristocratically strong fascists. But, fascism moralizes in exactly the same way as the
Jews do for Nietzsche;

Positive And Negative Attributes In Lord Of The Flies
Positive attributes can propel people to success, however, when one s negative attribute is prominent it
can lead to the start of their downfall. In the novel The Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding,
there are many characters with strong personalities. While being trapped on an island the situations
may not always go as planned. A leader is needed to keep things in line but as one knows Jack and
Ralph fought head to head for power. From the novel it is clear that Ralph is a natural leader, uses
common sense, and is charismatic, Jack on the other hand wanted power, didn t always use his
common sense, and is also charismatic. Those are examples of a few of Ralph and Jack s positive and
negative attributes.
Throughout the novel both characters, Ralph and Jack have a thirst for power. One may say that Jack
is a stronger leader due to his persuasiveness with his need for power, but on the other hand Ralph is a
great natural leader. From the beginning Ralph shows interest in getting home while leading the group
of boys. Ralph may be young but he seems to have a general idea on how to get the group going in the
right direction. He has an innate ability to split the group up and give them the important tasks that
need to be done to survive for several days for example: tending to the fire, and hunting which was
Jack and the choirboys job. To be a good leader you must stay positive which Ralph is able to do
majority of the time by persistently believing that everyone

Friday Night Lights Should Be Banned In Public Schools
The story Friday Night Lights takes place in a small town called Odessa, Texas in the year of 1988.
After every year of football they hang a picture of each player who made All State. This reminds the
rest of them what glory looks like. Friday Night Lights gives a perspective of how every small town
high schools are and is very popular for it, however it should be banned in our public schools because
it contains profanity, racism terms, and sexually situations; the results of reading this book can cause
more teenagers or even children to use offensive language, cause more racism than there already is,
and be sexual at a young age. Despite that students now use profanity in their public schools and even
more out of school, this could cause more children and teens to use the offensive language around
their peers.
As Jerrod McDougal states in the book, I ve got no idea what I want to do. I ve got no idea what
school I want to go to. My SAT won t be worth shit. And no football schools want me, (Bissinger
308). When McDougal says this, it represented the confusion of about 90 other football players. After
every year Permian football is over; two teenage boys have the opportunity to have a shot for college
football. However, the others just have the memories to look back on. Accordingly to TIME it states,
The researchers found that on an average teen novels contain 38 instances of profanity, which
translates to nearly seven curse words per hour of reading, (Sifferlin).

Erica Fryberg
Friendships is a poem by Erica Fryberg that can relate to almost anybody who has experienced real
and fake friendships, as it is about the speaker s perspective on friendships, and the difference between
having real and fake friends, forced friendships and real friendships. Through a comparison of
friendships and furniture, the poet uses a humorous tone to describe friendships, making the speaker
relatable. I particularly enjoyed this, as on a personal level I was able to relate to this, as a student at a
school where teachers attempted to force unnatural relationships multiple times. Overall, this poem
was an engaging poem, which, through language and poetic devices, clearly described the difference
between real and fake friendships.
As the title implies, the subject matter of this poem are friendships, and real and fake friends. The first
stanza describes how forced friendships are often fake, and are only an idealized image of real
friendships, made only for the purpose of pleasing the teacher. Through a comparison of furniture and
friendships, the poet depicts the fakeness of the forced friendships, and how they seem polished and
shine like glass, yet are also easily shattered. On a personal level, this particularly is ... Show more

The Pros And Cons Of The Human Genome Project
In this essay I am going to be talking about what the Human Genome Project is and how it has
benefited society.
(3)The Human Genome project focuses on identifying, sequencing and mapping all genes in the
human body. Also to develop faster methods for sequencing DNA. It is an international research
project that celebrated its 27th anniversary on 1 October 2017. In comparison, the Human Genome
Project can be compared to the Apollo project which brought humanity to the moon.
(3)The idea of the Human Genome Project came from an undergraduate researcher for the Thomas
Hunt Morgan lab called Alfred Sturtevant, who, in 1911, had to map the genes of fruit flies so that he
could manage his data. This would then mean that the Morgan lab can track the results through
generations of scientists because they would have his results which they could compare future
experiments to. This would then lead to the results being more accurate as they would have a set of
results to relate to once they have completed the experiments. Therefore, this would mean that it
would make their results would be more reliable.
(3)The Human Genome Project has revealed that there are around 20, 500 genes in the human body.
Because of this, the whole sequence of genes in the human body can be used to identify the locations
of other genes in the human body. This would lead to scientists having a better understanding of how
many genes are in the human body. Therefore it would suggest that the sequence of genes

The Learning Theory and Television Essay
The role of media is to provide a myriad number of programs to the individual. The programs can
either be beneficial, or damaging. Since we humans have the ability to learn while watching, the
impact of media is tremendous. For example, there has been found to be a high correlation between
violence and the number of television one watches. That is not to say that watching television causes
violence but that there is a significant amount of correlation to warrant further research.
The effects can be explained using the learning theory. The learning theory states that deviance is
learned through social interaction. The learning theory is all about the ability of anyone to learn
deviant behavior. That s where the media would come in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet these families and many others are touted as average. This sets up out of reach goals, and this is
where the anomie strain theory comes in. The anomie strain theory states that lower class people are
more likely to get involved in deviant activities because the society has encouraged them to pursue a
high success goal without providing them with the means of achieving it. So when you see that
average family on television, and the difference between you. One starts to ask themselves what am I
doing wrong that I don t have those things. After some time, the strain becomes too much, and to
achieve those goals you commit deviant acts such as selling drugs, or stealing. To put it simply, those
are the only tools they have to achieve societal goals, and it just happens that those tools are
considered deviant. If given the right tools, this would decrease deviant behaviour.
The terms incidence and prevalence are very important for us to understand the media, and our class
in general. In class, to understand deviance we look at many statistics, and the two terms are tools to
understand the data. To start off incidence in this context would mean the frequency in which new
crimes, or deviant acts take place. It can also be understood to be the probability of new cases in
deviance. The other important term is prevalence, and that is interpreted as the commonness of
something. When the prevalence of something increases

The General System Theory For Understanding Modern...
The shift of research and theory models went through a major shift during the 1960s and 1970s when
the open systems perspective gained support as an embedded interdependent activities embedded in
and dependent on a wider environment. System theories of organization have two major conceptual
themes or components: (1) applications of Ludwig von Bertalanffy s general system theory to
organizations and (2) the use of quantitative tools and techniques to understand to understand complex
relationships among organizational and environmental variables and thereby to optimize decisions
(Shafritz, Ott, Jang, 2011). A system is an organized collection of parts interacting and designed to
accomplish specific organizational goals or purposes. The general system theory provides an
important perspective for understanding modern organizations. The systems theory views of an
organization as being complex set of interconnected elements, such as the inputs, processes, outputs,
and feedback loops, and the environment in which it operates and with which is continuously
interacts. System theorists are continuing to study the interconnections using organizational decision
processes and information and control systems as their focal points of analysis. The open systems
became the more dominate organizational theory during the 1960 s that the classical organization
theorists rationale was closed system that pursued the goal of economic efficiency. The open system
was more complex, dynamic in

and gesture to the secret society of Masons, similar to the secret society in Thomas English s tale. The
Cask of Amontillado revolves around murder, but is not a tale of detection similar to other short
stories written by Edgar Allan Poe. The thing that makes the tale interesting is not only it being a tale

Hiss vehemently denied these claims, saying that he had never been a communist , but then was
eventually found guilty. At this point, he had gone too long without being charged and could not be
charged with espionage, his original charge, but he was found to be lying under oath. He was charged
with perjury, and served 44 months in jail. This is one of many examples of the type of persecution
present during this period. Thousands of people were convicted, and even those that were not
convicted suffered setbacks and ostracism by their friends, family, co workers and employers. Many
people who were even suspected of being Communist were almost immediately fired from their jobs.
An example of this is the West Coast Port Security Program. This ... Show more content on

The justification behind this was that any Communist that was working with the ports was a security
risk between Russia and the United States. At first, almost all of the unions of dockworkers and
seamen joined in this program, because they were all anticommunist. After some time, the Coast
Guard became involved in the program. The Coast Guard took over many functions that the unions
had been handling by themselves when it came to this project, and this was met by growing hostility
from the unions as well as the individual employers. After the involvement of the Coast Guard, many
unions became angry and hostile toward the Coast Guard: There was considerable opposition on the
part of the maritime unions to the original transfer of these functions to the Coast Guard and this
antagonism toward the Coast Guard has not altogether abated. (Brown/Fassett). Not only did this lead
to a huge invasion of privacy, nearly 3,800 seamen and dockworkers lost their jobs under the West
Coast Port Security Program that had been established in the immediate aftermath of the Korean War
(Schrecker). Communism was viewed as a huge security risk, and with the government s propaganda

What Role Does Margaret Play In A Midsummer Night s Dream...
It seems that the majority of the plays we have read have contained male lead characters. The stories
always revolve around the men, but what about the women? They should not be ignored even though
they are not the feature character of the story. Many of them have significant roles to the storyline, and
without them, the play would be quite different. Queen Margaret played an important role in Richard
III as a prophesier of the events that were to unfold, and Helena was important to A Midsummer
Nights Dream because she was the only one who really thought about the nature of love. Queen
Margaret is the old, vehement widow of King Henry VI. She enjoys angrily lurking around the castle
and cursing everyone for the dreadful things that have happened to her family. Margaret s wrath exists
for good reason. For one thing, Richard s family took the thrown from Queen Margaret s late husband
so that Edward IV could be crowned king. In addition to this, Richard killed her son. Margaret is not
only a woman, but also a widow, and now she s a charity case without a husband or a son. She feels a
terrible grief, and the fact that the murders have not been avenged just makes things worse for her.
Though she plays a very minor role in the play s plot, Margaret is still a very powerful ... Show more

Thou killed st my husband Henry in the Tower, / And Edward, my poor son, at Tewksbury (1.3.118

events in the play. While speaking to Queen Elizabeth, she

Descriptive Personal Experience Essay
As I got on the plane I was not able to handle all of my excitement. I would be having a new
adventure in Italy. It would take about 12 hours to arrive. During that time I would be sleeping,
looking for fun tourist attractions, and sleeping some more. The plane finally landed just a few
minutes ago on Central Italy and now I await my taxi. Once the taxi arrived and took me to my hotel I
decided to go sightseeing. As I was driving to the Orvieto Cathedral I got lost. Without reception for
my phone I decided to ask a woman near by. As I approached her she looked very well built and
strong. As I neared her I noticed that she was also holding a child. I then asked, Excuse me, do you

trying to comprehend how this is at all possible. Breaking the silence, she asked, What year do you

impossible, she remarked, we just barely conquered all of Rome. No, that s impossible, you conquered
Rome thousands of years ago, I remarked. Mala then look at me as if I were lying to her. Trying to
prove to me she was correct she told me of all their discoveries and recent accomplishments. My
people have recently taken over Rome, built drains, made tunnels that take away excess water, and we
have paved streets with brick houses. Not to mention that we have lances, axes, swords, and daggers
in bronze, Well, my people have many great discoveries and accomplishments too. I then proceeded to
tell her of basic things like electricity, cement, and flowing tap water. I feared that if I told her
anything more about things such as planes and iPhones she might freak out. Once I finished she told
me that I was lying and that no such things would ever exist now, but only in the future. That s when
she made the connection that I was from the future. However, really, I was in the present and she was

Commercial Harvesting Of Green Turtles
Marine species have been subjugated to overharvesting throughout human history, the lack of data
presents challenges to conservationists defining healthy populations. In the case of Hawaiian green
turtles, data compiled from commercial harvesting, economic demands, and previous exploitations are
insufficient for examining the original population. Historical studies like these can yield information
important to fishery managers and have the potential to redefine some populations recoveries. The
purpose of this study was to examine the influence commercial harvesting of green turtles from 1948
to 1974, aside from early indigenous harvest. Current debates question whether the population has
rebounded since commercial harvest halted and has spurred further research. The commercial fisheries
record of catch was not recorded using the present day surveys and researchers are forced to explore
the fisheries impact with influence from local inputs quantify the catch per unit effort. This data they
hope will give a better understanding to the population history to improve conservation and
management. The methods of extrapolating useful data to mimic todays current survey numbers,
researchers used various components to achieve similarity. Annual catch was calculated using 635
reports from fishing vessels. Reports of only mass were compared to the average mass of the total year
to estimate the number of individual turtles. To assess the intensity of the fishery, or effort,

Essay on the Burning of Bridget Cleary
Bridget Cleary or more popularly described as the last witch burned in Ireland , though not actually
accused of witchcraft, was murdered and burned by her husband in 1895, whose motive was his belief
that she had been abducted by fairies and in her place the fairies had left only a changeling; he claimed
to have killed the changeling and not his actual wife. Bridget was burned immolated which either
caused her death or was done post mortum which prompted extensive press coverage during a time
when Ireland s quest for self government was being hotly debated.
During this time it is clear that many changes were occurring in Ireland, a land that was once
dominated by tradition was now becoming a modernized country. Where then does ... Show more

However, to say that tradition was the sole cause of her murder is not quite accurate as there is a line
that divides tradition from superstition, that line being knowledge.
Unlike tradition, where there is a clear understanding of a specific belief and its lack of validity,
superstition contains a clear lack of knowledge altogether or perhaps even a dismissal of evidence
against an idea, belief or practice that is irrational; most often based on the supernatural. What
Michael Cleary did to his wife can be seen as a result of superstition brought on by tradition; the idea
that his wife went off with the fairies and that a changeling was in place of her would only be derived
from oral tradition of the community and his family. However, it is the lack of knowledge, being the
superstitions, in regards to these traditions that lends itself to acting upon them in an irrational manner.
At one point Bridget asks her husband as he is questioning her, if he thinks that she went away with
the fairies because his Mother did; indicating a history of superstitions regarding fairies. He then goes
on to commit the horrendous act, and though one wants to attribute the cause of murder to
superstitious acts based on the oral tradition of fairy legends, superstition just labels it, it does not
explain it. (Bourke, 153.)
The understanding of fairy folklore is necessary when looking at the motive of Michael Cleary. Fairy
legends run abundantly throughout Irish Oral tradition

The Effects Of Chemicals On The Environment
Introduction
Considerable advancements in science and technology were realized right after the Second World War.
As a result of the advancement of science and technology, new methods of farming and the use of
chemicals like DDT and aerosols among others was introduced. All these technological developments
led to environmental deterioration leading to high risks on the environment as a whole. Rachel Carson
was the first person to write a book on the effects of chemicals on the environment (Pepper, Webster,
Revill, 2003). Her book inspired many people to change their behaviors towards the environment,
leading to the birth of environmentalism.
Description of Environmentalism
Environmentalism is a social movement with concerns for environmental protection. Since the
existence of the universe, man has had power over all living and non living things. It became the norm
for humans to just receive from Mother Nature without giving back at all. This human behavior
caused the earth to reach an optimum level of sustenance and it began deteriorating. The
contamination of the Earth s air, water, land and vegetation is considered by (Carson, 2002) as an
assault on the environment. The destruction of the conditions that make this world habitable was on
the rise, placing the sustainability of the universe at high risk. People, therefore, had to come up with a
way to reverse the situation or else the Earth would be unsustainable. Toxic chemicals that were used

Light On Photosynthesis
This lab allowed the experimenters to understand the effect of light on the producer s photosynthesis.
Once understanding how the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis worked, the experimenters
can make predictions on how the light will affect the photosynthesis. For example, a low amount of
light will affect the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis because light is essential for those
reactions. The question the experimenters asked was, Does having more or less exposure to light cause
a faster rate of photosynthesis? The experimenters first had to know that the leaf tissue of a producer
contains gas filled intercellular spaces. Since the leaf have these spaces, they float when placed in a
solution. When the leaf disks are put into a vacuum pump, the gases leave the intercellular spaces and
the liquid fills these spaces. In doing so, the leaf disks sink to the bottom. This is because the liquid
have a higher density than the gases that were in those spaces. As oxygen is made by photosynthesis,
it diffuses into the intercellular spaces. When there is enough oxygen in the intercellular spaces, ...

However, the amount of time the experimenters waited before looking at each petri dish was not exact.
Having this could ve caused an experimental error because each petri dish could ve have more or less
time under their light amount. This would affect how many reactions of photosynthesis the leaf disks
would ve done, causing the number of leaf disks floating to be incorrect. A way to fix is to have a
timer, so that way each petri dish could have to same time of light exposure. In conclusion, the
experimenters learned that the higher amount of light caused more leaf disk to be floating. This is
supported by what the experimenters learn in class, because light is used in the light dependent
reactions of photosynthesis. Therefore, having more light would have to produce more

This movie demonstrates family, friends, betrayal, rejection, running from responsibility, values, and

The movie starts with a sunrise of African grasslands. As dawn breaks, all the animals of the Pride

waiting on Pride Rock. Zazu (Rowan Atkinson) flies over all the animals and meets Mufasa on Pride

Analysis Of J Alfred Prufrock And Preludes
Elliot is seen as one of the most influential modernistic poet of all time. Elliot s poems evidently
highlight the real face of modern man and modern existence by exploring the social realms that
society is placed under in a desolately described, modernistic world. TS Elliot describes the
industrialised world in both J Alfred Prufrock and Preludes as a disjointed, dehumanised world where
mundane activities are ever present in people s lives. Elliot focuses on using the character s viewpoint
through the stream of consciousness as a means of highlighting the major concerns of modernism. His
poems J Alfred prufrock and Preludes disclose the major concerns of modernism associated with the

This notion is encapsulated in Elliot s repeated use of rhetorical question as Prufrock regularly asks,
how should I presume. Elliot highlights the rapidly changing world that encapsulates a major concern
of modernism, through describing the bleak and industrialised world that surrounds prufrock as he
observes, the smoke that rises through the pipes. Prufrock s utterances throughout the poem promote
his social entrapment and his alienation from the modern world as each consciousness is a cloudy
domain on which Prufrock has no hope of being understood by others, that s not what I meant at all.
The use of fragmentation further develops this notion as he can only describe parts of people, I have
known the arms already in turn dehumanising their features and emphasising how he is detached from
society as he only changes for the sake of changing, to prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet.
As Prufrock describes the women in the poem, the vague description and Synedoche, arms that are
braceleted.. suggests that his is socially incapable of making a personal connection with anyone
highlighting his social awkwardness in a modern world. Furthermore, Elliot portrays the rapid social
change for the people of the nineteenth century by exploiting the mundane tasks

sense of belonging to my profession, to the field of higher education management, to this as the field

sense of non belonging seems more often associated with my country, and overall with my native

Hills Like White Elephants, a Theme Analysis Essay
Ernest Hemmingway uses time, place, and symbolism in Hills like White Elephants to intensify the
central dilemma in a story about a man and a woman deciding on whether to go through with an
abortion. Although a literal reading of the title may not seem to have any relation to the story, the title
is rich in implications. Critics suggest that Hills refers to the shape of a woman s stomach when
pregnant, and Webster s 21st Century Dictionary defines white elephant as: [An] awkward, useless
possession. The term is also defined in Webster s as an item that is worthless to some but priceless to
others. According to Victor Lindsey, the child in the story is a white elephant in the view of the man,
who is trying to convince the girl to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The train depot is surrounded on both sides by fields: one side with trees and fields of grain, and the
other contains nothing but dust (Hemingway 324). The two sides of the train tracks represent the
choice Jig will have to face between pregnancy and abortion.
Every time the man or the woman try to change the subject and avoid talking about the abortion, they
end up saying something that refers to or alludes to the baby or the abortion. The woman suggests that
the hills look like white elephants (324), which the man fails to acknowledge. The lack of clear
communication between the two causes tension and arguments at every turn. When the woman agrees
sarcastically that the man has never seen white elephants, he says, Just because you say I wouldn t
have doesn t prove anything (324). The woman is clearly annoyed at the insensitivity of the man s
negative feelings toward her pregnancy. For her, the baby is a priceless treasure, but for him it is a
worthless fetus.
Time and place are very significant in the story. The author describes where the train is boarded and
where it is headed to, but he never tells the reader where the man and woman are at the moment.
Hemingway notes that the train stopped at this junction for two minutes and went on to Madrid (324).
Baker argues that this limited time symbolizes the time she has to have the abortion (Baker, 145).
Baker further

  • 2. Our Journey through the City of Paris at Night Paris is a beautiful city during the day, but at night, it changes. The first thing that is seen are all the lights from the shops, buildings and streetlights. These lights brighten up Paris and give it a different but just as beautiful perspective at night. The Eiffel Tower, one of the top attractions in Paris that tourists come to see can be described as an iron, lace work of art, and the most recognized structure in the world, and at night with the glow of its lights, it stands out like a guiding lighthouse. We could see this beautiful tower wherever we stood day or night. My choir group was invited to sing in some of the cathedrals in Paris. One night after we had a concert and had dinner, our tour guide gave us an option of either staying on the bus or getting off and taking a tour down the Seine River to see the Eiffel Tower at night. If we should choose this option, we needed to find a different way back to the hotel as the bus driver was not going to come back for us. My family and a few others chose to take the tour down the river. On the boat, we could see different buildings, museums and the Eiffel Tower. On the tour, we also passed under the famous bridges in Paris. Two of the buildings I remember viewing were the Louvre, and Norte Dame. From the boat, I could also see the Louvre pyramid which sits in the courtyard of the Louvre Palace. The Louvre Pyramid is a large glass and metal pyramid, surrounded by three smaller pyramids. • 3. comparative essays Introduction Many people today have their thoughts on how the Earth was created. Christians take a biblical perspective of how the universe was created by a creator. One thought that Christians believe is that God created the earth and accomplished this in six days and rested on the seventh day. This is the model of how a week is set up and the model that we currently follow. Jon W. Green states though differences of opinion exist for various doctrinal issues within Christianity, few are more divisive than controversies surrounding the days of creation and the age of the Earth. As stated previously many people have thoughts and are curious as to how the Earth itself came into existence. When it comes to the scientific community there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Mortenson, 2011) Young Earth Creationist believe in the idea of the Hebrew word Yom. (Morris, 2011) This word translates to mean a literal day and is used in Genesis to describe each day of creation. We as Christians must take the Bible as true, this being the whole bible including the Old Testament. In regards to the age of the Earth, young earth creationist take Genesis 5 as a genealogy of the Earth. The genealogies of Genesis 5 as well as 11 give people an idea of the years and happenings from Adam to Abraham. Scholars can mostly agree that Abraham lived about 2000 BC. All of these facts then set the date of creation at approximately 6000 years ago. (Mortenson, 2011) Old Earth View In response to the young earth six day creation of the Earth idea, secular scientist have developed the idea of the Big Bang theory. According to the big bang theory, the universe began by expanding from a minuscule volume that possessed extremely high density as well as extreme temperatures. Initially the universe was significantly smaller than a pore on your skin. (Takahashi, 2000 ) It is thought that this happened about 10 20 billion years ago. According to Yuki D. Takahasi (2000) in his article Big Bang: How did the Universe begin? He states 3 main observations that point to truth in the Big Bang Theory. Number one is astronomers have found that the universe continues to expand which means that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Great House, By Frank Herbert Literature has gone through many eras, with each changing it in its own way, but it can be argued that the era that changed literature the most was the modern era. Dune by Frank Herbert is a science fiction novel of the modern era and fits the modernist theme to a tee. The modern era, like any other literary era, can be categorized by the attributes that modernist literature contain. Dune, being a member of the literary era, is riddled with such attributes. Dune is part of the modern literary era, as shown by it following the general theme and properties of that era. In works of the modern literary era figures of authority are often shown as untrustworthy, this property is clearly visible in Dune. The great houses, a source of authority in the Dune universe, are widely seen as untrustworthy and suspicious. An assassination attempt is aimed at main character Paul Atreides. The Atreides, the great house the main character belongs to, believe it was the Harkonnen s, another of the great houses, who planned it, showing their distrust and suspicion of them. Duke Leto says and were Harkonnen creatures almost to a man. They have tried to take the life of my son! (Dune, pg. 126) showing how his distrust in them causes him to question their humanity. This shows how the great houses, Dune s form of an authority figure, are seen as not trustworthy even by the other great houses. The great houses are not to be trusted, showing how authority in Dune isn t always to be trusted, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. American Personal Space In American society, personal space is valued and is seen as a right that is expected to be given to everyone. The physical closeness allowed between individuals is determined by the degree of their relationship. In a public environment such as restaurants and other eating establishments, people sitting together in a table often are familiar and comfortable enough with each other to allow themselves to be near in proximity to other people. Those people sitting together may be family members, friends, or acquaintances willing to get to know one another. Because of this norm that we carry in the United States, rarely do we in real life see someone voluntarily sitting with a total stranger in randomness without the other finding the person ... • 6. Analysis Of Alice Walker s The Color Purple Thriving or Surviving: An In Depth look at Alice Walker s The Color Purple One might think that a childhood of sexual violence, emotional abuse, and rape would make a character dark and embittered; however, in Alice Walker s The Color Purple, the author explores the thin gray line that stands between surviving and thriving. Manipulating her characters so that they are constantly crossing the line back and forth. It is her protagonist, Celie, who imbues the reader with a pondering of the human condition, allowing for an introspective look at empowerment. Framing this bildungsroman in the form of letters, Walker s dramatic shifts reveal the religious and sexual bondage the protagonist is chained to. In this novel, Walker uses the pain, sorrow, and abuse of Celie to demonstrate the constant struggle that is waged between surviving and thriving in every shift of her life. While Celie s childhood remains an abusive saga, one will find an undying sense of optimism.Walker explores Celie s childhood which is lived primarily in survival mode. Celie s brutal upbringing gives her a maternal authority, as the reader continuously sees the absence and resentment from her mother And now I feels sick every time I be the one to cook. Mama always fussing at me and looking at me (Walker, 1). A rape scene is used to open the book, which reveals that Celie has been impregnated by her father. On one side, Ellis Island processed large number of immigrants and welcomed them in the states immediately, while Angel Island on other side didn t welcomed many immigrants, especially, Chinese immigrants. This is because of the implementation of The Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 and its periodical updating till 1943, which lead to hamper the entry of Chinese Immigrants to the United States. In 2007, the Army Acquisitions Corps (ACC) offered me the opportunity to be a part of something new. Having already been actively involved in the acquisition community, providing for the war fighter, and feeling a sense of accomplishment in doing so, there was an internal sense of pride in being a part of the newest Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) in the United States Army, 51C; Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology Non Commissioned Officer (ALTNCO). San Antonio, 2007, my wife and I arrived in Texas. The transportation office calls to inform me of my delivery date, which happened to be the same day I signed in off leave. Knowing how long it takes most moving companies to show up and off load, I took the initiative to call the unit and inform the sergeant major of the situation. As a senior Non commissioned Officer, I do not ask for much. However, in informing my new sergeants major of the current situation, there was not an offer to extend my leave, for even a day. This wasn t something I was accustomed to. Thus, I followed orders and finished with transportation and signed into the unit immediately afterwards. Although he may have had good reason, his action (or lack thereof) set the tone for what was to follow. Reception My arrival to the unit was a little chaotic and confusing. The soon to be brigade staff was minimally manned, and we were co located with whom would soon be formerly known as the Army Contracting Agency (ACA). The ACA was primarily a civilian organization, and did not have a functional staff that could receive and in process personnel. Therefore, we had to rely on U.S. Army South for support. Most of the time I play it for either the story or for the challenge. However, I play various kinds of games and there are various different reasons why I play them. Moreover despite popular beliefs that game causes violence, there are further benefits from playing a game than just a simple entertainment. I play adventure games to experience stories and escapades. There are other sources of stories, such as books and TV shows, but video game is the only kind of entertainment which offers interactive storytelling. I don t want to just passively learn about stories. I want to immerse in it, and try to live with various characters inside those stories. I want to be an active participant of that story. One of the best games I ve played which provides me with a good story is The Walking Dead . It s a game about living after a zombie apocalypse. Players play as Lee, a guy who s trying to survive with his group of survivors. Early in the game, he meets Clementine, a little girl who was separated from her parents. As they try to live their lives, there will be a lot of thought provoking choices which can actually change what would happen later. Fascism, Nietzsche, Power Fascism, Nietzsche, Power Nietzsche s writing about power dynamics and the creation of the strong and weak, the good and the bad, is very closely intertwined with the workings of fascist ideology, and how it understands itself to be strong. In a Nietzschean sense, however, fascism ultimately fails to be truly strong because it creates itself as a reformed moralistic approach to power, rather than freeing itself from moralism. More specifically, the construction of the Jews as weak by those who subscribe to fascist ideology, and the portrayal of themselves as strong, is almost wholly antithetical Nietzsche s actual position concerning power dynamics. Nietzsche explains this struggle as a slave morality, which can only survive if it has a force that acts against it so its existence is justified; the role of opposition to the slave morality is occupied by the strong. He writes In order to exist at all, slave morality from the outset always needs an opposing, outer world; in physiological terms, it needs external stimuli in order to act its action is fundamentally reaction (Genealogy of Morals 22). The morality of the strong is precisely the antithesis of this: it justifies itself by reaffirming the strength of itself they justify their behaviors by reaffirming their own lives, not by placing their lives in juxtaposition with the lives of the weak. Nietzsche expands this, saying The opposite is the case with the aristocratic mode of evaluation: this acts and grows spontaneously, it only seeks out its antithesis in order to affirm itself more thankfully and more joyfully (Genealogy 22). What fascists fail to recognize, however, is that fascism does not transcend the need to fight an opposing force it does not exist without some external stimuli to which the fascists are always responding. In the novel The Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, there are many characters with strong personalities. While being trapped on an island the situations may not always go as planned. A leader is needed to keep things in line but as one knows Jack and Ralph fought head to head for power. From the novel it is clear that Ralph is a natural leader, uses common sense, and is charismatic, Jack on the other hand wanted power, didn t always use his common sense, and is also charismatic. Those are examples of a few of Ralph and Jack s positive and negative attributes. Throughout the novel both characters, Ralph and Jack have a thirst for power. One may say that Jack is a stronger leader due to his persuasiveness with his need for power, but on the other hand Ralph is a great natural leader. From the beginning Ralph shows interest in getting home while leading the group of boys. Ralph may be young but he seems to have a general idea on how to get the group going in the right direction. He has an innate ability to split the group up and give them the important tasks that need to be done to survive for several days for example: tending to the fire, and hunting which was Jack and the choirboys job. Friday Night Lights gives a perspective of how every small town high schools are and is very popular for it, however it should be banned in our public schools because it contains profanity, racism terms, and sexually situations; the results of reading this book can cause more teenagers or even children to use offensive language, cause more racism than there already is, and be sexual at a young age. Through a comparison of friendships and furniture, the poet uses a humorous tone to describe friendships, making the speaker relatable. I particularly enjoyed this, as on a personal level I was able to relate to this, as a student at a school where teachers attempted to force unnatural relationships multiple times. Overall, this poem was an engaging poem, which, through language and poetic devices, clearly described the difference between real and fake friendships. The first stanza describes how forced friendships are often fake, and are only an idealized image of real friendships, made only for the purpose of pleasing the teacher. • 18. The Pros And Cons Of The Human Genome Project In this essay I am going to be talking about what the Human Genome Project is and how it has benefited society. (3)The Human Genome project focuses on identifying, sequencing and mapping all genes in the human body. Also to develop faster methods for sequencing DNA. It is an international research project that celebrated its 27th anniversary on 1 October 2017. In comparison, the Human Genome Project can be compared to the Apollo project which brought humanity to the moon. (3)The idea of the Human Genome Project came from an undergraduate researcher for the Thomas Hunt Morgan lab called Alfred Sturtevant, who, in 1911, had to map the genes of fruit flies so that he could manage his data. This would then mean that the Morgan lab can track the results through generations of scientists because they would have his results which they could compare future experiments to. This would then lead to the results being more accurate as they would have a set of results to relate to once they have completed the experiments. Therefore, this would mean that it would make their results would be more reliable. (3)The Human Genome Project has revealed that there are around 20, 500 genes in the human body. Because of this, the whole sequence of genes in the human body can be used to identify the locations of other genes in the human body. This would lead to scientists having a better understanding of how many genes are in the human body. Therefore it would suggest that the sequence of genes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So when you see that average family on television, and the difference between you. One starts to ask themselves what am I doing wrong that I don t have those things. If given the right tools, this would decrease deviant behaviour. The terms incidence and prevalence are very important for us to understand the media, and our class in general. In class, to understand deviance we look at many statistics, and the two terms are tools to understand the data. To start off incidence in this context would mean the frequency in which new crimes, or deviant acts take place. It can also be understood to be the probability of new cases in deviance. The shift of research and theory models went through a major shift during the 1960s and 1970s when the open systems perspective gained support as an embedded interdependent activities embedded in and dependent on a wider environment. System theories of organization have two major conceptual themes or components: (1) applications of Ludwig von Bertalanffy s general system theory to organizations and (2) the use of quantitative tools and techniques to understand to understand complex relationships among organizational and environmental variables and thereby to optimize decisions (Shafritz, Ott, Jang, 2011). A system is an organized collection of parts interacting and designed to accomplish specific organizational goals or purposes. The general system theory provides an important perspective for understanding modern organizations. The systems theory views of an organization as being complex set of interconnected elements, such as the inputs, processes, outputs, and feedback loops, and the environment in which it operates and with which is continuously interacts. System theorists are continuing to study the interconnections using organizational decision processes and information and control systems as their focal points of analysis. What Michael Cleary did to his wife can be seen as a result of superstition brought on by tradition; the idea that his wife went off with the fairies and that a changeling was in place of her would only be derived from oral tradition of the community and his family. Once understanding how the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis worked, the experimenters can make predictions on how the light will affect the photosynthesis. For example, a low amount of light will affect the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis because light is essential for those reactions. The question the experimenters asked was, Does having more or less exposure to light cause a faster rate of photosynthesis? The experimenters first had to know that the leaf tissue of a producer contains gas filled intercellular spaces. Since the leaf have these spaces, they float when placed in a solution. When the leaf disks are put into a vacuum pump, the gases leave the intercellular spaces and the liquid fills these spaces. In doing so, the leaf disks sink to the bottom. The use of fragmentation further develops this notion as he can only describe parts of people, I have known the arms already in turn dehumanising their features and emphasising how he is detached from society as he only changes for the sake of changing, to prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet. As Prufrock describes the women in the poem, the vague description and Synedoche, arms that are braceleted.. suggests that his is socially incapable of making a personal connection with anyone highlighting his social awkwardness in a modern world. Furthermore, Elliot portrays the rapid social change for the people of the nineteenth century by exploiting the mundane tasks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Non Belonging Essay In conclusion, in light of the gained understanding of the process of linguistic identity and of its formation, I see my sense of belonging/non belonging more clearly now. On the one hand, I feel this sense of belonging to my profession, to the field of higher education management, to this as the field of investigation in my research, but also to the English culture and language. On the other hand, the sense of non belonging seems more often associated with my country, and overall with my native culture and also with the struggle in understanding the native context of higher education. However, this sense of non belonging to the HE national context may even be the result of the lack of research into the sector nationally, this made worse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems that during my whole career permanence is more aspiration than reality, or it is more dynamic rather than permanent as practice, to be intended in Giddens terms (1979), so including a fair level of agency towards the world. This is even the reason to say that my uniqueness and sameness arise from this dedication to a/the never ending commitment to some form of professionalism, being this associated with the language, the culture or with the academic field. Overall, my linguistic identity has gradually progressed in the 3 year period in England, while it has been silent in the early years of my career, perhaps only waiting for the right opportunity to come and to move things forward. However, now that I have returned to Bologna University, I feel the struggle to keep myself updated with the reinforcement of the linguistic identity, since this moves even faster than those previous and sought changes that have taken to its formation. And this is even more challenging in a context of higher education where cultural professionalism has an obscure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Impact Of Salinity On The Murray-Darling Basin The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) is Australia s primary productive river basin, accounting for $19 billion of agricultural output and providing nearly half of Australia s food supply. Moreover, human activity such as irrigation development and land clearing for urbanisation has exacerbated these salinity rates, suggesting an urgent call for action. This essay attempts to explore this important issue, drawing on two significant impacts salinity has on the MDB and their implications for productivity and sustainability. • 37. Hills Like White Elephants, a Theme Analysis Essay Ernest Hemmingway uses time, place, and symbolism in Hills like White Elephants to intensify the central dilemma in a story about a man and a woman deciding on whether to go through with an abortion. Although a literal reading of the title may not seem to have any relation to the story, the title is rich in implications. Critics suggest that Hills refers to the shape of a woman s stomach when pregnant, and Webster s 21st Century Dictionary defines white elephant as: [An] awkward, useless possession. The term is also defined in Webster s as an item that is worthless to some but priceless to others. According to Victor Lindsey, the child in the story is a white elephant in the view of the man, who is trying to convince the girl to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The train depot is surrounded on both sides by fields: one side with trees and fields of grain, and the other contains nothing but dust (Hemingway 324). The two sides of the train tracks represent the choice Jig will have to face between pregnancy and abortion. Every time the man or the woman try to change the subject and avoid talking about the abortion, they end up saying something that refers to or alludes to the baby or the abortion. The woman suggests that the hills look like white elephants (324), which the man fails to acknowledge. The lack of clear communication between the two causes tension and arguments at every turn. When the woman agrees sarcastically that the man has never seen white elephants, he says, Just because you say I wouldn t have doesn t prove anything (324). The woman is clearly annoyed at the insensitivity of the man s negative feelings toward her pregnancy. For her, the baby is a priceless treasure, but for him it is a worthless fetus. Time and place are very significant in the story. The author describes where the train is boarded and where it is headed to, but he never tells the reader where the man and woman are at the moment. Hemingway notes that the train stopped at this junction for two minutes and went on to Madrid (324). Baker argues that this limited time symbolizes the time she has to have the abortion (Baker, 145). Baker further ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
