Slavery in Oroonoko
ENL 4230 Dr. Oliver Oroonoko The Ultimate Slave Narrative: Women and Their Masters Aphra Behn
presents us with an extensive parody in her novel Oroonoko: a complete slave narrative, depicting the
enslavement of both man and woman. She uses historical fact as well as semi anthropologically
accurate setting to reveal the truth in her words. Historically speaking, women were slaves for
centuries before the white man enslaved the black man. Women were bartered and sold into marriage,
abuses and forced to work under the watchful eyes of her husband. Aphra Behn demonstrates this
though Imoinda s character development, or lack thereof. The fact that this is considered a historically
accurate text validates the reality of the issue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, once the slave market opened up and expanded, slaves became the major commodities:
being a white slave owner developed into the very definition of wealth and prestige, of class and
sophistication. Slave women became fetishes for white slave owners. Hegemony is defined as the
dominance and influence of one social class over others. As Raymond Williams puts it, hegemony is a
concept which at once includes and goes beyond two powerful earlier concepts: that of culture as a
whole social process , in which men define and shape their [and those which they control, i.e. women]
whole lives; and that of ideology , in any of its Marxist senses, in which a system of meanings and
values is the expression or projection of a particular class [white European wealthy male] interest
(108). Subsequently, the needs of this hegemony, this ideology plus, defines the commodities of the
time. A commodity is a product of value and use, separate from a service. In other words, the
individual ho provides the service, is technically, a commodity. The predominant social class being
that of the wealthy white European male, this hegemony, is then capable deciding what is acceptable
in society and what is not. In a capitalist s society, Imoinda s place became that of a commodity. In a
consumerist s society, Imoinda s place became that of a fetish, every man capable

The Massacre At Wounded Knee Analysis
The Massacre at Wounded Knee First, and foremost, the battle between the white man and the Indian
Nation is a poignant historical portrayal of what took place at the Wounded Knee Massacre. It was all
set in motion in the Moon When the Deer Shed Their Horns , a Sioux moon of December. The Sioux
were so distraught about the assassination of Sitting Bull; they could not muster an uprising. The
Ghost Dance was their only hope to eradicate the white man. There was no hope on earth, and God
seemed to have forgotten us. Some said they saw the Son of God; others did not see Him. If he had
come, He would do some great things as He had done before. We doubted it because we had seen
neither Him nor His works. The people did not know; they did not care. They snatched at hope. They
screamed like crazy men to Him for mercy. They caught at the promise they heard He had made. The
white men were frightened and called for soldiers. We had begged for life, and the white man thought
we wanted theirs. We heard the soldiers were coming. We did not fear. We hope that we could tell
them our troubles and get help. A white man said the soldiers wanted to kill us. We did not believe it,
but some were frightened and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In April of 1868, the treaty of Fort Laramie conceded to the Sioux Black Hills, in the Dakota Territory.
Numerous miners moved into the area, one such miner discovering gold. In 1874, The US government

Persuasive Essay On The Matrix
As we grew up, and got into a more understanding stage as a kid, we always have questioned
everything that comes new to us, with the, five W s, (when, where, why, who and what). We
experienced new things like, different hobbies, food, traveling to new places, etc. As we enter the
teenage years, we think our main goal in life is to, go to school, graduate, school again, graduate and
finally our dream job, but life isn t that easy isn t? Life involves money, dealing with people, meeting
new people, drama and other struggling situations. Life is not easy because many things come one it.
Watching The Matrix gave me a real life lesson and made me more open minded about life that can
help anybody. I believe The Matrix answers some questions concerning serious life issues like, self
doubting, taking revenge and taking a new path into your life. Self doubting makes us feel unwanted
and unbelieving on your self when it comes to any situation. Taking revenge only takes place when
somebody is mad at one another by mostly being jealous. Taking a new path may be a start to
something better, and start understanding what you re here for. In The Matrix , Morpheus finds Neo
because he knows he is the one. After Morpheus find him and tells him you re the one , Neo is
confused and wants more answers. Morpheus gives Neo two options to take the blue pill or the red
pill. If he takes the red pill, he will know all the answers he s been wanted to know and if he takes the

Funeral Oration And Pericles Speech
Cyril Klutse
4th October,2017
7am Class
While everyone has their own opinion, and is more than entitled to share it, other s beliefs and
thoughts influence most people. Politics and opinions of leaders on the way in which a country must
govern are often easy portals to access an impressionable mind. Throughout history, those with
opposing viewpoints on democracy have often spoke up and shared their opinions with the world in
hopes of being heard. Aristotle, Pericles and Xenophon have each taken a turn in doing so, and made
their feelings obvious to the people. All opinions were very different; Aristotle s being more of an
open minded approach towards democracy (not completely dismissing the idea of it), Pericles being in
total agreement with it, and Xenophon being sarcastic and exceptionally opposed.
In Pericles Funeral Oration , he speaks strongly in favor of a democratic nation and talks about how
and why that s important. He specifically mentions that personal freedoms are allowed because of
their democratic way of life, but also conveys the point that while the people were free to live for
themselves, they chose to live for one another as well, and all hoped to better the city as a positively
functioning society. Throughout the address he praises Athenians, their military, and explains to the
people how their system of government was to responsible for their success and that it set them apart
from other nations. His belief in Democracy was understandable and holds in a similar way today by
many people. But while democracy does help immensely with the formation of a nation, Pericles did
not discuss that none of the positive attributes stemming from democracy would be possible without
the positive actions of his people, with or without it. He didn t necessarily give credit where credit was
due, however, he did seem to be on the right track with what would hopefully grow to be the best form
of government and for the right reasons; people choosing to live for each other in a positive way is just
as important (if not more) than people choosing to live rightly for themselves.
Aristotle s view on democracy is much different from Pericles in that while Pericles preached of how
each man was both a citizen

Amendment Of The Constitution Prohibits Cruel And Unusual...
The eighth amendment of the constitution prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. What makes
something qualify as cruel and unusual? Killing a person certainly sounds cruel, and injecting various
chemical drugs to put to sleep and kill a person most definitely sounds unusual. The united states is
the only Major western country that still practices the death penalty. Therefore why would the death
penalty even be considered as constitutional by anyone?
Two wrongs do not make a right and making an example of the ones put to death doesn t even help
reduce violent crime. If it did slow crime there would be less of it in regions where the death penalty is
practiced, in reality the opposite is true. The south has the highest murder rate out of all

Similarities Between Wordsworth And Yeats
Comparative Essay on Wordsworth and Yeats
In Down by the Salley Gardens by William Butler Yeats and She Dwelt Among the Untrodden ways
by William Wordsworth, the poets use a theme of love while applying imagery consistently
throughout the poems. Additionally, Yeats uses repetition to show the passing of time through
metaphors while Wordsworth comparatively portrays his inner thoughts. Since they are giving their
emotions, Yeats applies similes comparing his love for the beauty of nature whilst Wordsworth is
commemorating his love, despite her disappearing from his life. She Dwelt Among the Untrodden
Ways by Wordsworth expresses his emotion towards her as she lives her life only to die isolated.

Repetition is utilized to reflect Yeats inner opinion on how he rushed to the relationship. Ultimately
resulting in her leaving him. The use of repetition is dominant throughout as the phrases little snow
white feet (2) to her snow white hands , my love and I did meet (1) in contrast with my love and I did
stand showing repetition while also showing imagery of something snow white. This is important
because of how the poem has a parallel structure. Past events have already happened and cannot be
changed thus he is reflecting how he regrets not listening to her. As mentioned before, another point of
repetition is take love easy with take life easy which could be interpreted as her message to the
narrator about learning to relax and slow down. This is supported by how he is reflecting back to when
he was still young and foolish (8) thinking about how his life was wasted and not realizing that he is
not living life to the fullest, relating back to a theme of regret. However, for Wordsworth, he utilizes
metaphors to discuss his feelings. Wordsworth uses a metaphor of being Half hidden from the eye! (6)
to visualize the obscurity of the woman. This can be interpreted as a contrast with the line above,
mentioning the violet (5) standing out, while the eye has a connotation of omnipotent power and
vision,

Letty Cottin Pogrebin s Women At Point Zero
As Letty Cottin Pogrebin once said: When men are oppressed, it s a tragedy. When women are
oppressed, it s tradition. Throughout the novel: Women at Point Zero, the latter of this statement
resonates strongly through the actions and thoughts of Firdaus, a young woman living in Egypt in
1975. During this time period in Egypt, Islamic women were heavily discriminated against and
enjoyed no basic human rights such as: education, a sense of safety, or most importantly, freedom.
Women were owned and treated like possessions by men, and many found themselves in the world of
prostitution in order to live a better life and gain some freedoms. In addition to that, women were
shamed upon if they spoke out about their oppression. Thesis: Throughout ... Show more content on

The earliest memory she had of her mother was two eyes that carefully watched her: I can remember
her eyes in particular. I can not describe their colour, or their shape... They were eyes that watched
me...they could see me, and follow me wherever I went, so that if I faltered while learning to walk
they would hold me up (pg.15). Firdaus perceives her mother as always there for her, always watching
and caring, helping her back up. (ANALYZE/EXPLAIN SO WHAT?????) She sees light in her eyes,
whereas the earth and sky are pitch black. Her mother s eyes are a focal point. However, this statement
helps Firdaus transition into what she perceived her mother as, as Firdaus grew up. In summer, I
would see her sitting at his feet [father] with a tin mug in her hand as she washed his legs with cold
water. My mother was no longer there...she looked just like my mother; the same long garments, the
same face... but when i used to look into her eyes I could feel she was not my mother...No light
seemed to ever touch the eyes of this woman, even when the day was radiant and then sun at its very
brightest. One day I took her head between my hands and turned it so that the sun fell directly on her
face, but her eyes remained dull...like two extinguished lamps (pg. 16 17). These statements serve the
purpose of showing that men felt superior to women and they could order them to do their wishes at
any time. Women had no say; they

Computer Aided Drafting unlocks the door to numerous opportunities for employment; I selected
Computer Aided Drafting because it s so extraordinary with AutoCAD, because of the uses of
Computer Aided Drafting, History of CAD, education requirements, and immeasurable career
opportunities that are obtainable. First off, CAD is computer technology that has contributed in design

The prehistoric technique of undertaking drafting application was on paper with a pencil and it
required an extensive amount of time. They used a drafting table with rulers and templates to draw the
most detailed view they could. Technology in Computer Aided Design applications has transformed
and evolved to have numerous applications. For example; my dad used CAD in construction and
remodeling. Remodeling kitchens and bathrooms with CAD was an enormous necessity because the
customer received an enhanced 3 D detailed view. They also use CAD for architectural structures,
roads, aircraft, ships, cars, digital cameras, TVs, aerospace, clothes, custom choppers, mobile phones,
and even for landscaping. While history of CAD starts out with a mathematician called Euclid from
Alexandria in 350 B.C. CAD groundwork is established on geometry with postulates and axioms.
Drafting took abundant of hours to draw and if we made a miscalculation we would have to start all

ground breaking CAD software because the architect interacted with the computer graphically by
manipulating a light pen to sketch on the computers screen. New CAD technology called Sketchpad

fundamental CAD software integrated such straightforwardness into its user interface. Sketchpad was

Johnson Majority Opinion focuses on an actual court case based on a situation where a flag was
burned. The people of Texas were outraged with Johnson. During the time of the case the people
gained acceptance to allowing Johnson to be a free man. The way to preserve the flag s special role is
not to punish those who feel differently about these matters. It is to persuade them that they are wrong.

Public Health Policy And The Care Crisis
Public health policy is associated with the need to imposition public health professionals to consider
leading gaps in the future of health care crisis. The purpose is to protect the underserved and

(Laureate Education, 2012). By protecting community health, in turn, helps control the cost of the
over burdensome healthcare expenses (Getzen, 2013). A public health professional has an obligation
to influence the health status through evidence based policymaking needed to intervene for policy
makers. Given financial constraint to reduce health disparities financial preparation and disseminative
communication are the essential tools needed to make supplement legislative policy (Brownson,
Chriqui, Stamatakis, 2009; Laureate Education, 2012). The future financing to improve and amend
required policy is through evidence based health surveillance that helps public health professionals
decide the direction of where budget containment should be allocated (Brownson et al., 2009).
A public health specialist is responsible for the setting up the priorities to inform and advise

How Did Hamilton Affect The Economy
Even though he was not perfect, Hamilton did make many important economic decisions that would
later impact the future of the U.S. Beginning with he returned to New York, Hamilton finished his
studies and worked as a Pro Bono Lawyer, a lawyer who worked without pay, helping ordinary people
with everyday problems, (Fowler, Russell). Following this Hamilton attended the Constitutional
Convention hinting his support for a strong federal government, which would later lead to the
foundation of the Federalist Party, ( Alexander Hamilton. Dictionary of American Biography). In

Embedded Journalism Of War
Wars existed in ancient time, and are still somewhere in the world. Questions like, how people fight,
where it is, what is going on, and who wins last may catch curiosity of public. Therefore, journalism
on battlefield is definitely important for both people who care about the war and military who want to
build their images in society. In this essay, it will mainly focus on war news in modern times, and this
would give a simple definition about what is embedded journalism, which will include general
description of embedded journalists, such as what courses should they get, and how they collect
information on warfare. Then it looks at a brief introduction about nowadays battlefield journalism.
Furthermore it will be followed by a main way for war news broadcasting, and finally with a
consequence of correspondents pressure, which is a controversial issue considered as a direct factor to

the Embedded Journalism and Journalists
Journalism in the battlefield is now accepted widely as embedded journalism, and in the March 2003

*From the 1890s to the 1920s, America was a period full of widespread social and political reform.
Some state that the Progessive movement was a single movement that either only supported
democracy or only supported morality. However, there was no single movement, but rather a bunch of
separate reforms and movements that supported a movement towards a better America. There were
reforms that altered American life and are talked about in history classes all over the world, which I

Risk Management Task 1a
JIT Task 1 Risk Management
Risk Management
From the last decade risk management is the most researched and exciting area in the financial
industry as it elaborates how to minimize and avert the hazard of risk from the portfolios of different
assets and from the operations of financial institutions. Regulators and depositors mainly emphasize
the risk management and according to them risk management is an essential ingredient to enhance the
value of shareholders and increase their level of confidence. Risk management is the assessment of
risks to mitigate, monitor and control the probability or impact on uncertain events. Risk management

governments operating in the complex economic environment of the 21st century must contend with
a broad range of risks. Some do so in an adhoc or reactive fashion, responding to risks as they appear,
whilst others are proactive, planning in advance the risks that they wish to assume and how they can
best manage them. Since it has become clear over the past few years that risk can be financially
damaging when neglected, anecdotal and empirical evidence suggests that institutions increasingly opt
for formalized processes to manage uncertainties that can lead to losses. Risk can be classified in a
number of ways and though we do not intend to present a detailed taxonomy of risk, a brief overview
is useful in order to frame my discussion. To begin, risk can be divided broadly into financial risk and
operating risk. Financial risk is the risk of loss arising from the movement of a market or performance
of a counterparty and can be segregated into market risk (the risk of loss due to movement in market
references, such as interest rates, stock prices or currency rates), liquidity risk (the risk of loss due to
an inability to obtain unsecured funding or sell assets in order to make payments) and credit risk (the
risk of loss due to non performance by a counterparty on its contractual obligations). A rise in funding
costs, an inability to sell financial assets at carrying value or the default by a counterparty on a loan

Comparison Of Descartes And John Locke s View Of The Real...
The real world consists of all that is reality, which exists regardless if it is perceived it or not. For
example, a person who was born blind has never seen color, but irrespective of the blind person seeing
it or not, color still exists in the world. In contrast, the world as we know it is composed of what we
perceive with our senses, which may vary from person to person. For example, for the person who
was born blind and has never seen color, color would not be a part of their perceived world as it would
for someone who has seen it. Although the blind person might have a notion of color, learned from
others who can see color, the blind person would still have no direct experience of it as others who can
see color do. Both Descartes and Locke distinguish between the real world and the world as we know
it. However, there are several points at which their views differ. Locke argues that the ideas we gain
from the world are directly experienced through our senses and what we perceive with our senses
represents the real world. Locke presents us with primary qualities, such as shapes, and tells us that
they are good depictions of reality, leading us to believe that our ideas of primary qualities are ...

BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and CIVETS (Columbia, Indonesia, Vietnam,

BRICS are the world s largest emerging markets and CIVETS are the second largest emerging markets

emerging market is a term used to describe a country that is still developing. It is not yet developed

The World s First Global Conflict
Chantel banks World Literature II Literature Essay March 7, 2015 Illustrations on the Impact of War
The world s first global conflict, World War 1 (1914 1918), opposed the Central Powers of Germany,
Ottoman Empire, Austria and Hungary against the Allied forces of The United States, Great Britain,
Russia, France, Japan and Italy. World War 1 was significant because of the initial appliance of
modern technology into warfare; which consequently resulted in an unfathomable amount of soldiers
deaths and multinational collateral damage. Through the introduction of multinational war, was the
introduction of personal experiences and perspectives of all parties included. Although we may never
know firsthand of the emotional pressure and frame of mind of the many individuals who endured the
World War 1, we are fortunate in the amounts of historical artifacts, including literature written during
those times, to help provide the future with an awareness and appreciation for those who sacrificed
their lives for the world today. Two pieces of literature which specifically explores the emotional
impact of war is Katherine Mansfield s symbolic work of literature The Fly: and W.B Yeats poignant
elegy, An Irish Airman Foresees His Death. Each piece of literature written during the first year of the
post war era, are an impressively intimate illustration of emotionally expressions and perspectives of
the protagonists caused by the devastation of the war. The two pieces of literature

I Am Malala Research Paper
Imagine having no freedom, no control of your own life. Restrictions on everyday things that you or I
take for granted.
Good morning Miss Kokinovic and classmates.
A challenge, a type of struggle that can affect someone mentally, emotionally or physically. To me,
facing a challenge is for someone to overcome or battle their mental, emotional or physical struggle.
This tests the person s abilities of which make it harder or easier conquer.
I am Malala , an autobiography written by Malala Yousafzai is a fantastic non fiction text of which has

whose home land was taken over by the Taliban and was shot by them.

An important challenge that Malala overcame was when the Taliban came. They placed restrictions
like no listening to music, watching movies, dancing and not letting women go outside. One of the
biggest things they did was put a curfew in place, as Malala said The curfew took over our lives , this
posed a challenge for Malala because she did not have any freedom.
She referred to the Taliban as vampires, It seemed to us that the Taliban arrived in the night just like
vampires she said. By using this direct quote from Malala we can see that by comparing the Taliban to
vampires she is saying that they are remorseless people. Like vampires who essentially suck the life
out of people, the Taliban have rid girls like Malala of a quality of life by the restrictions they ve
placed. By fighting against the Taliban this has made her grow like the quote

My Family s Slave, By Alex Tizon
What would you do if your family had a woman working for them throughout your whole life? What
about when you watch her get mistreated and find her sleeping in corners, watching her teeth rot,
exhausted all the time and working as a mother and servant without pay?Would you defend her? Alex
Tizon did. In My Family s Slave , Alex Tizon tells a story about a woman named Lola who became a
great part of his life. After understanding what Lola was as a young boy and watched how she was
treated, the author reveals how as he grew older he tries to enhance Lola s life. He confesses that by
the time he starts to give her a taste of freedom she is 75 years old and cannot do much. But
throughout those eleven free years, he tries to make up for everything.
Lola or Eudocia Tomas Pulido, her real name, is enslaved at 18 years old to Tizon s mother as a gift
when she is a child. In the second paragraph, the author starts off saying, she was 4 foot 11, with
mocha brown skin and almond eyes that I can still see looking into mine (21). He chooses this to
describe Lola and his first memory of her to show the kind love he has for her. Soon after, Tizon goes
into the unfortunate memories he carries, Her days began before everyone else woke and ended after
we went to bed. She prepared three meals a day, cleaned the house, waited on my parents, and took
care of my four siblings and me. My parents never paid her, and they scolded her constantly. She wasn

Mirror Mirror The Uses And Abuse Of Self Love Summary
Self love is an up and coming problem that can even be explained in Greek Mythology tales. Chapter
2 of the book Mirror, Mirror: The Uses and Abuses of Self Love is written by Simon Blackburn to an
audience of educated readers in their adulthood to apply lessons from greek mythology to modern
society, and suggest ways to downsize self love. This book was recently published in 2014 by
Princeton University Press. Simon Blackburn is a retired professor of Philosophy at The University Of
Cambridge, but remains a research professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Blackburn effectively educates his audience of self love by Identifying with his audience, and the

He works through this constraint but, no matter what he cannot change the tale. He has work around it
to get his point across. Also, considering it is a book he has a lack of visual representation which can
hurt readers understanding of the story. Also since this is a longer book some readers may become
disinterested and decide not to read it. This chapter includes the usage of Kairos, which is the right
time to make an argument. Narcissism is becoming a big problem in today s society, and has been for
a long time. The author could have reached his exigence to write this essay by realizing all this self
love around him. In order to convince his readers of his ideas, Blackburn goes back and forth between
the Story told by Ovid, and ideas on self love to help readers believe him. The chapter starts off with
the Greek Tale about Narcissus and his journey of self love. The author then helps connect these ideas
to modern society to help his audience understand the argument he is trying to make. Blackburn doesn
t put the tale word for word in this chapter. Instead he explains the story, and includes excerpts of the

The Importance Of Plants In Canada
Plants are extremely important to the growth and development of Canada because as a source of food,
the country requires the nutrients the plants provide and they are irreplaceable. Plants are crucial as
they are a component of everything people eat, whether people eat the plants or the animal they eat or
get food from rely on plants. The more food and plants available to better the reproduction, and
therefore more population growth in communities. Having more food available for the entire
population has shown to decrease poverty and increase the overall development of the community (2).
In Canada, there is a large discrepancy between the food security of the southern provinces and
northern territories. This has stuck many northern Canadians in difficult situations when trying to buy
the proper food. There is also an economic factor of food and plants. In current society, most food in
imported from country to country, creating many economic benefits in countries that import food (3).
That money can be used to create a better community and country. On another level, plants and crops
also have religious and symbolic value in our culture, which helps to increase development on a social
level. Increases in variety and quantity can help to develop communities. Certain pants and foods help
to give communities and countries their identity. For example, many foods are crucial to our identity
like maple syrup. Overall, food and plants is extremely important to Canada as a society

Global Current Event That Can Improve The Mortality And...
Summarize findings from one global current event, within the last six months, that relate to an
innovation that can improve the mortality amd morbidity rates of cardiovascular disease in developing
countries.
After years of what sometimes seemed painstaking slow efforts to bring a less invasive approach to
managing mitral valve (MV) disease, things are finally moving forward on several fronts. It s likely a
response to the eye opening clinical success and rapid adoption of transcatheter aortic valve
replacement (TAVR). The success of TAVR has reinvigorated efforts to develop less invasive
approaches to the other heart valves. It has not been easy, but the transcatheter revolution marches on.
Vavular heart disease has been called both The next epidemic and the forgotten epidemic. It is
responsible for more than 24,000 deaths and 85,000 deaths hospitalizations each year in the United
States, with those numbers increasing as the population ages and life expectancy rises. While
approximately 2.5% of the populations has moderate or severe valve disease,1 the prevalence in those
75 years of age and older ranges between 11.7% and 13.3% depending on the source. 1,2
The TAVR market is expected to generate close to $4 billion in business by 2020, according to a report
released in February by Technavio, a global research and advisory company. The report considers
revenue generated from the sales of trancatheter aortic valve implants to determine market size. The

Gothic review
To understand the chronicles they must be read as gay , at least this is the incredibly bold statement
made by George Haggerty in his chapter on Anne Rice and the Queering of Culture in his book Queer
Gothic. There is no denying that Anne Rice s Vampires have a lot to do with homosexuality and
Haggerty s highlighting this is in no way a new criticism, but the claim that is must be read as gay is
entirely dismissive of the many other sexual paradigms that exist within The Vampire Chronicles.
To begin with, his referral of Lestat as a gay predator seems unfair in its definition. The fact of his
being a vampire automatically asserts him as a predator , but his relationships are not exclusively
homosexual. He is a vampire that merely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet, in Blood Canticle, written five years after Haggerty s essay, it is Rowan who Lestat finally and
selflessly loves selflessness not being an attribute we have known greatly in his character until this
point. As Haggerty says, Rice is eroticizing the gay man whilst at the same time undermining it by
portraying the homosexual relationships as heavily sexual, violent and deviant in comparison to the
more nurturing, romantic relationship Lestat has with Rowan.
The Vampires in the novels explore sexual deviancy, but are always ultimately punished in doing so.
The homosexual parentage of Louis and Lestat to Claudia and of Armand to Sybelle and Benji are
both destroyed in their own way. Claudia and Louis final rejection of Lestat and Armand s failure in
being able to protect Sybelle and Benji from Marius, are both examples of homosexual families being
explored and then finally being punished for going against the accepted social norm of 20th century
culture. This supports Haggerty s claim that readers want to explore unauthorized desires and at the
same time see them bleed , by exploring and then destroying homosexual relationships repeatedly
throughout the collection. When reading the characters as homosexual as Haggerty suggests, this
punishment dynamic makes it unavoidable to find truth in Haggerty s claim that Rice

Writing Style Analysis Essay
Introduction Understanding the various modes and methods of writing is important in academic
writing. The following essay will describe, examine, and analyze the methods of three peer reviewed
journal articles from the International Journal of Work, Health, Organizations, specifically addressing
work and stress.
Describe Journal Writing Style The publications within the journal selected show a specific writing
style throughout all the articles selected. The writing style that was presented in these articles was a
formal style of writing. A formal style of writing can be classified as academic writing that presents a
certain structure that is to be followed. For instance, these articles presented an abstract to provide an
overview to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The structure of the publication of these journal articles is presented on three levels. First, the authors
present the background information on the topic to gain an understanding of the topic. Secondly, the
authors present their ideas by conducting a study on the topic selected. The studies presented are
topics that are occasionally discussed or researched so the authors of this journal shed light on these
areas. The final level of structure that the authors present is a discussion and conclusion of their
results. This final level of the articles presents ways for the intended audience to incorporate the
findings in their practice or encourage the audience to pursue further research within the topic. For
example, Deligkaris, Panagopoulou, Montgomery, and Masoura (2014), present in their conclusion
how there are limited studies on burnout in correlation with cognitive impairment and introduce ideas
for future research. In addition, the articles provided practical implications for management to use
within high stress work environments to support their employees (Pindek Spector, 2016; Michailidis
Banks, 2016).
Analyze Journal Writing connection to Student Writing The writing presented in the journal articles
showe one strong connection to the writings I submit within the classrooms of Capella University. The
major connection is the use of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
(APA) is used. Using APA provides the overall structure of an author s writing. These articles used
headings, references, and citations throughout their work. I use these three elements consistently,
because it allows my work to be organized and my ideas supported based on other journals related to
the same topic.

Intro:
(Anecdote of trainee told not to come back) (Introduce management and security beef. Explain I am

be lowered?
Points of Agreement: The turnover rate at Heraeus can be lowered depending on the areas you are
asking about, but even then there are subareas that are points of disagreement. One point of agreement
between the security officers and management is the policies and procedures are implemented to keep
everyone safe and the speed of production dynamic. Some metals are time sensitive when they are
being made. The guards and management believe that all the policies and procedures that are enacted
are for a just reason. It can get dangerous in the plant and if there were no procedures, many of the
employees would be hurt or worse. Management also wants to protect its metal which is why they
implement how to follow the procedures. Security has no problem with management s procedures and
policies and tries to follow them as best as possible. Another point of agreement is that procedures are
evolutionary and adaptable. Because management is not active in the procedures, they concede that
security knows how to adapt certain procedures to make them quicker and/or safer. If the adaptation
happens with more security officers, then management will standardize that adapted procedure. Some
of the adaptations that happen come from poorly trained guards, which is

Summary Of Four Children For Sale By Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes describes the punctum of a photograph as that accident which pricks me (but also
bruises me, is poignant to me) (Barthes 27). The punctum of a photo is not meant to be the focus of
the image. It is the detail that sparks interest. In the photograph 4 Children For Sale, credited to
Bettmann Corbis, the punctum for me is the sign or maybe the facial expressions of the children or the
mother herself. I say for me because the punctum of a photo is not the same for every person. Every
person sees an image differently. Different things will be more prominent to different people because
the punctum is unique to the specific spectator.
However, I do not know exactly which detail acts as the punctum. According to Barthes, What I can
name cannot really prick me (51). The punctum does not necessarily have to be one detail though. If
the punctum is what stings at you, what ultimately bothers you, the punctum can be made up of
multiple pricks. Multiple subtle details that stop you and make you think of the photo in a new light.
Overall, the punctum is what makes you question and what engages you to the photo.
The sign is at least one of the sources of the punctum which can be described as what I add to the
photograph and what is nonetheless already there (55). The focus of the photograph should be the
children considering they are the ones being advertised and yet my attention is constantly drawn to the
actual sign and not simply its message. The sign is an anomaly

Analysis Of Strawberry Spring By Stephen King
Stephen King is the author of many novels and short stories with creepy settings; King admits that he
even has a fear of bugs to add to the list of things that freaks him out. In one of his earlier short stories
from 1976, several women at New Sharon Teachers College fall victim to a Jack the Ripper style
character with a mysterious fog that weighs heavy over the campus. King, the narrator, also a student,
leads us on a twisted tale in a foggy New England town to search who committed the horrifying acts.
My analysis of King s use of the literary elements, together with his history of horror reflected from
his short story, Strawberry Spring ( The Fact Site, 8 Apr. 2017) Author Stephen Edwin King was born
on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine. King is one of the most famous and successful horror
writers of all time. His parents, Donald, and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King, split up when he was very
young, and he and his brother David divided their time between Indiana and Connecticut for several
years. King graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1966 and attended the University of Maine at

began working as an English educator at Hampden Academy and married fellow writer Tabitha

Technology And Technological Advancements
Technology s advancements The increasing capabilities of today s digital tools can create harmful
effects and habits on humanity. These days everyone has a smartphone or computer with increasingly
powerful technology. It is truly impressive how far this technology has come just in the past several
years; but is it all as beneficial as advertized? With all the apps and accessories that come with these
powerful machines, it is easy for our generation to take advantage and abuse the privileges associated
with having these devices. In the article Is Google Making Us Stupid , Nicholas Carr an American
writer who has published books and articles on technology, business, and culture states I m not
thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I m reading. Immersing myself in a
book or a lengthy article used to be easy. My mind would get caught up in the narrative or the turns of
the argument, and I d spend hours strolling through long stretches of prose. That s rarely the case
anymore. Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages . I believe this is just one
of the numerous ways technological advancements have spiked our need for stimulation and dulled
our sense of acceptance with solitude and boredom. While I agree with Carr that our concentration
skills have lowered I would also like to shed light on the what social media has done to our
psychological make up. The age that children are exposed to smart technology is quickly

Plane Crash Lab Report
During investigating this plane crash, the materials found at the site were: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen,
and oxygen. In order to identify the victims and what happened, I used empirical and molecular
formulas. Empirical formula is a formula with the lowest whole number ratio of elements present in a
compound. Molecular formula indicates the actual number of atoms of each element presented in a
compound. First, I calculated the empirical formula by using the percentages of the compound
analysis for each passenger. I calculated this by turning an element s percentage into a number out of

After, I divided all elements by the lowest number in order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The chemical analysis of 75.42% carbon, 6.63% hydrogen, 8.38% nitrogen, and 9.57% oxygen leads
to an empirical formula of C21H22N2O2 [see binder paper for work]. C21H22N2O2 has a mass of
334.45 g, which matches with the molar mass of the molecular formula. Base on this similarity and
the description, I can conclude that this substance is Strychnine. Strychnine is a rat poison that is
highly toxic to humans. When looking for the passenger carrying poison, I looked for a person who
shows resentment towards someone else on the plane. Both Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez carried
this substance with them and also happen to be enemies. Friends and family from the interview stated
that Selena Gomez is in a long and intense feud with Miley Cyrus. However, according to her Twitter,
Selena knew that Miley would be on the same flight. In addition, she also sent a text message before

!!What is Service Oriented Architecture(SOA)?
With Service Oriented Architecture a communication protocol is used to make public, platform
independent services available to any application or user that needs them. SOAs provide services to
components that may involve simple data passing routines or connect to another service or carry out

Examples Of Social Justice Issues In Canadian Society
Justice Issues In Canadian Society
By: Council of Canadian Bishops
In Canadian society, there are many great things that everyday people do to make the place they live in
much more. Charity is a big contribution to our society; almost everyday, people donate money and
clothes they grow out of to help the less fortunate out. General kindness is a wonderful thing to see
from one person to another; from holding the door open for an elderly person, to giving money to the
homeless, kindness can be seen everywhere. The knowledge and good will to do the right thing is also
another wonderful thing in our society.
The social justice principles that are being discussed in this document are: distributive justice, social
justice, legal justice, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Discrimination is an obvious example; by discriminating people because of race, gender, poverty
status and age, it goes against all the social justice principles. By discriminating against a certain
group of people, the government or everyday people strip them of their given rights, which is not at all
acceptable. An example of racial discrimination in legal justice is refusing to hire a black man just
because of his skin color, even though he is more qualified than the next person to be hired. This, of
course, is illegal now but still occurs in less extremes. Another example of sexual discrimination is
refusing to allow a female in the Senate; this happened in the 1800 s, but is still a great example of
sexual discrimination. Social status is another form of discrimination; every time someone passes a
less fortunate person begging for money, the automatic response is that they put themselves into that
position because of drug or alcohol addictions. This is also another form of discrimination against
these less fortunate people. Discrimination against age leads to disrespect of elders and teenagers;
disrespect is another society issue that is still present today. The virtue of distributive justice gives the
example of welfare programs for the unemployed and elderly; the average people who have never
heard of welfare and do not understand the concept are the ones discriminating against those who rely
on that extra money to

Descriptive Experience Essay
A bright array of lights dotted the dark landscape beneath the plane where I sat It was late, around
midnight, and the day had stretched beyond measure beginning with customs in the Atlanta airport.
About 1:30 a.m. we landed in the airport at San Jose International Airport. I was exhausted but the

what seemed to me to be a mountain overlooking the city I was taken aback I have never seen

what was to be a long day. Each morning we would travel to a church where we would hold a worship

Victorian Internet Chapter 1 Summary
The Victorian Internet tells of telegraph s development and creation. Also, it talks of its remarkable
impact, oddballs, and the visionaries together with the eccentrics who pioneered the telegram
development. According to the book, by the year 1865, the telegraph cables started to span into
different oceans to continents rapidly and played an essential role of revolutionizing on ways countries
dealt with each other (Standage 15). Due to the creation of telegram, the book provides that some
impacts were realized including the creation of businesses and more job opportunities. Additionally,

The main interesting point in the book is when the author focuses more on the culture change that was
realized in operators, governments, businesses, and newspapers as a result of telegram invention
(Standage 137). It is from this chapter that the book readers can easily and better understand the
uniqueness that was associated with telegraph technology in transforming society, accelerating the
world together with annihilating distances. Standage portrays an inner description of coding books
that were used by brokers and traders, as well as the establishment of new and effective agencies. It is
from telegram development that individuals like the Romans decided to blossomed over cables and
wires, others decided to come up with secret codes over there devices with issues related to

Unforgettable Moment In My Life Essay
Everyone has their own story and different journey of lives and I always believed that every story has
their own unique and personal reasons. I don t know where to start my story because I m a person who
is always bottle things up and I can t talk to anyone. Without confidence and courage, I have waited
for the right time to write, to tell my story and to confess how I feel like everyone else.
I m the oldest and have two youngest sisters. We have always had our parents who love and care about
us a lot. They will do anything for us. I was a happy kid and my life was completely perfect. What I d
never really thought about is that, someday one of them could no longer be there for us.
Most of us experienced unforgettable moments in our lives. The moment that I will never forget
happened in my family. I was only ten when my mom died ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Everyone was wrong. I blamed for everything happened in my life. I was feeling like a completely
different person than before. I was negative, anxious, abrupt and unpleasant to almost everyone. There
are times I felt so confused, so lost and so empty. At home, I rather locked myself in the room to keep
myself away from everyone because I thought that is the best way out.
Yes, life can be so cruel and unfair. But, at some points, it taught me to be a strong person and to
understand the process I went through. With my dad as my role model in life, I have learnt about
strong, dedication and love. I am so blessed to have a strong, loving father who I always knew was on
my side, would do anything for me and my sisters. One thing I realized is that he had been there for us
when my mom wasn t around.
Days by days, I try to get up to collect and fix back every piece of my life. It s a time for me grown up
and become an adult. I believed my mom reached a better place with God. When I look back on it
now, I have come a long way with my dad who gave us the perfect upbringing that made us

From the Ground Up
The coffee shop where I wait for Karen is loud and busy. I sit and take notice of the people around me.
The shop is filled with young and old people alike, and I notice the differences between these two
generations. The younger crowd sits at almost silent tables everyone s eyes on the screens in front of
them. The older crowd sit and talk. Face to face with friends at their table and even with strangers at
other tables, by eavesdropping and then inserting themselves into the conversation. While some of the
younger people find this behavior rude, I find it oddly charming. When Karen comes in, I immediately
recognize her bright smile. Karen is an older woman with brown hair and kind eyes. Karen Bowman
and I worked together a few years ago at OK Foods. I am excited to see her and catch up on all the
office gossip. We find a quiet corner in the shop to talk. I am going into the Accounting field and I am
looking forward to learning more about this from her experience. Karen explains to me that she got
her first bit of experience from her mother, who taught her how to balance a checkbook and write
checks. Karen learned this at an early age, because her mother wanted to teach her about the practical
things in life. Another Lesson that Karen s mom taught her is, a woman could take care of things... run
her own life and be able to handle raising children. It definitely prepared me for being a single mom.
Hearing this I can feel that Karen has a great deal of respect for her

  • 2. Slavery in Oroonoko ENL 4230 Dr. Oliver Oroonoko The Ultimate Slave Narrative: Women and Their Masters Aphra Behn presents us with an extensive parody in her novel Oroonoko: a complete slave narrative, depicting the enslavement of both man and woman. She uses historical fact as well as semi anthropologically accurate setting to reveal the truth in her words. Historically speaking, women were slaves for centuries before the white man enslaved the black man. Women were bartered and sold into marriage, abuses and forced to work under the watchful eyes of her husband. Aphra Behn demonstrates this though Imoinda s character development, or lack thereof. The fact that this is considered a historically accurate text validates the reality of the issue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, once the slave market opened up and expanded, slaves became the major commodities: being a white slave owner developed into the very definition of wealth and prestige, of class and sophistication. Slave women became fetishes for white slave owners. Hegemony is defined as the dominance and influence of one social class over others. As Raymond Williams puts it, hegemony is a concept which at once includes and goes beyond two powerful earlier concepts: that of culture as a whole social process , in which men define and shape their [and those which they control, i.e. women] whole lives; and that of ideology , in any of its Marxist senses, in which a system of meanings and values is the expression or projection of a particular class [white European wealthy male] interest (108). Subsequently, the needs of this hegemony, this ideology plus, defines the commodities of the time. A commodity is a product of value and use, separate from a service. In other words, the individual ho provides the service, is technically, a commodity. The predominant social class being that of the wealthy white European male, this hegemony, is then capable deciding what is acceptable in society and what is not. In a capitalist s society, Imoinda s place became that of a commodity. In a consumerist s society, Imoinda s place became that of a fetish, every man capable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Massacre At Wounded Knee Analysis The Massacre at Wounded Knee First, and foremost, the battle between the white man and the Indian Nation is a poignant historical portrayal of what took place at the Wounded Knee Massacre. It was all set in motion in the Moon When the Deer Shed Their Horns , a Sioux moon of December. The Sioux were so distraught about the assassination of Sitting Bull; they could not muster an uprising. The Ghost Dance was their only hope to eradicate the white man. There was no hope on earth, and God seemed to have forgotten us. Some said they saw the Son of God; others did not see Him. If he had come, He would do some great things as He had done before. We doubted it because we had seen neither Him nor His works. The people did not know; they did not care. They snatched at hope. They screamed like crazy men to Him for mercy. • 5. Funeral Oration And Pericles Speech Cyril Klutse 4th October,2017 7am Class While everyone has their own opinion, and is more than entitled to share it, other s beliefs and thoughts influence most people. Politics and opinions of leaders on the way in which a country must govern are often easy portals to access an impressionable mind. Throughout history, those with opposing viewpoints on democracy have often spoke up and shared their opinions with the world in hopes of being heard. Aristotle, Pericles and Xenophon have each taken a turn in doing so, and made their feelings obvious to the people. All opinions were very different; Aristotle s being more of an open minded approach towards democracy (not completely dismissing the idea of it), Pericles being in total agreement with it, and Xenophon being sarcastic and exceptionally opposed. In Pericles Funeral Oration , he speaks strongly in favor of a democratic nation and talks about how and why that s important. He specifically mentions that personal freedoms are allowed because of their democratic way of life, but also conveys the point that while the people were free to live for themselves, they chose to live for one another as well, and all hoped to better the city as a positively functioning society. Throughout the address he praises Athenians, their military, and explains to the people how their system of government was to responsible for their success and that it set them apart from other nations. His belief in Democracy was understandable and holds in a similar way today by many people. But while democracy does help immensely with the formation of a nation, Pericles did not discuss that none of the positive attributes stemming from democracy would be possible without the positive actions of his people, with or without it. He didn t necessarily give credit where credit was due, however, he did seem to be on the right track with what would hopefully grow to be the best form of government and for the right reasons; people choosing to live for each other in a positive way is just as important (if not more) than people choosing to live rightly for themselves. Aristotle s view on democracy is much different from Pericles in that while Pericles preached of how each man was both a citizen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Killing a person certainly sounds cruel, and injecting various chemical drugs to put to sleep and kill a person most definitely sounds unusual. Similarities Between Wordsworth And Yeats Comparative Essay on Wordsworth and Yeats In Down by the Salley Gardens by William Butler Yeats and She Dwelt Among the Untrodden ways by William Wordsworth, the poets use a theme of love while applying imagery consistently throughout the poems. The use of repetition is dominant throughout as the phrases little snow white feet (2) to her snow white hands , my love and I did meet (1) in contrast with my love and I did stand showing repetition while also showing imagery of something snow white. This is important because of how the poem has a parallel structure. Past events have already happened and cannot be changed thus he is reflecting how he regrets not listening to her. As mentioned before, another point of repetition is take love easy with take life easy which could be interpreted as her message to the narrator about learning to relax and slow down. This is supported by how he is reflecting back to when he was still young and foolish (8) thinking about how his life was wasted and not realizing that he is not living life to the fullest, relating back to a theme of regret. However, for Wordsworth, he utilizes metaphors to discuss his feelings. Wordsworth uses a metaphor of being Half hidden from the eye! (6) to visualize the obscurity of the woman. During this time period in Egypt, Islamic women were heavily discriminated against and enjoyed no basic human rights such as: education, a sense of safety, or most importantly, freedom. For example, a person who was born blind has never seen color, but irrespective of the blind person seeing it or not, color still exists in the world. In contrast, the world as we know it is composed of what we perceive with our senses, which may vary from person to person. For example, for the person who was born blind and has never seen color, color would not be a part of their perceived world as it would for someone who has seen it. Although the blind person might have a notion of color, learned from others who can see color, the blind person would still have no direct experience of it as others who can see color do. Both Descartes and Locke distinguish between the real world and the world as we know it. However, there are several points at which their views differ. Chapter 2 of the book Mirror, Mirror: The Uses and Abuses of Self Love is written by Simon Blackburn to an audience of educated readers in their adulthood to apply lessons from greek mythology to modern society, and suggest ways to downsize self love. The Importance Of Plants In Canada Plants are extremely important to the growth and development of Canada because as a source of food, the country requires the nutrients the plants provide and they are irreplaceable. Plants are crucial as they are a component of everything people eat, whether people eat the plants or the animal they eat or get food from rely on plants. The more food and plants available to better the reproduction, and therefore more population growth in communities. Having more food available for the entire population has shown to decrease poverty and increase the overall development of the community (2). In Canada, there is a large discrepancy between the food security of the southern provinces and northern territories. This has stuck many northern Canadians in difficult situations when trying to buy the proper food. There is also an economic factor of food and plants. In current society, most food in imported from country to country, creating many economic benefits in countries that import food (3). That money can be used to create a better community and country. On another level, plants and crops also have religious and symbolic value in our culture, which helps to increase development on a social level. Increases in variety and quantity can help to develop communities. Certain pants and foods help to give communities and countries their identity. Summarize findings from one global current event, within the last six months, that relate to an innovation that can improve the mortality amd morbidity rates of cardiovascular disease in developing countries. After years of what sometimes seemed painstaking slow efforts to bring a less invasive approach to managing mitral valve (MV) disease, things are finally moving forward on several fronts. It s likely a response to the eye opening clinical success and rapid adoption of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The success of TAVR has reinvigorated efforts to develop less invasive approaches to the other heart valves. It has not been easy, but the transcatheter revolution marches on. Vavular heart disease has been called both The next epidemic and the forgotten epidemic. It is responsible for more than 24,000 deaths and 85,000 deaths hospitalizations each year in the United States, with those numbers increasing as the population ages and life expectancy rises. While approximately 2.5% of the populations has moderate or severe valve disease,1 the prevalence in those 75 years of age and older ranges between 11.7% and 13.3% depending on the source. 1,2 The TAVR market is expected to generate close to $4 billion in business by 2020, according to a report released in February by Technavio, a global research and advisory company. Gothic review To understand the chronicles they must be read as gay , at least this is the incredibly bold statement made by George Haggerty in his chapter on Anne Rice and the Queering of Culture in his book Queer Gothic. There is no denying that Anne Rice s Vampires have a lot to do with homosexuality and Haggerty s highlighting this is in no way a new criticism, but the claim that is must be read as gay is entirely dismissive of the many other sexual paradigms that exist within The Vampire Chronicles. To begin with, his referral of Lestat as a gay predator seems unfair in its definition. The fact of his being a vampire automatically asserts him as a predator , but his relationships are not exclusively homosexual. He is a vampire that merely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet, in Blood Canticle, written five years after Haggerty s essay, it is Rowan who Lestat finally and selflessly loves selflessness not being an attribute we have known greatly in his character until this point. As Haggerty says, Rice is eroticizing the gay man whilst at the same time undermining it by portraying the homosexual relationships as heavily sexual, violent and deviant in comparison to the more nurturing, romantic relationship Lestat has with Rowan. The Vampires in the novels explore sexual deviancy, but are always ultimately punished in doing so. The homosexual parentage of Louis and Lestat to Claudia and of Armand to Sybelle and Benji are both destroyed in their own way. Claudia and Louis final rejection of Lestat and Armand s failure in being able to protect Sybelle and Benji from Marius, are both examples of homosexual families being explored and then finally being punished for going against the accepted social norm of 20th century culture. This supports Haggerty s claim that readers want to explore unauthorized desires and at the same time see them bleed , by exploring and then destroying homosexual relationships repeatedly throughout the collection. When reading the characters as homosexual as Haggerty suggests, this punishment dynamic makes it unavoidable to find truth in Haggerty s claim that Rice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The final level of structure that the authors present is a discussion and conclusion of their results. This final level of the articles presents ways for the intended audience to incorporate the findings in their practice or encourage the audience to pursue further research within the topic. For example, Deligkaris, Panagopoulou, Montgomery, and Masoura (2014), present in their conclusion how there are limited studies on burnout in correlation with cognitive impairment and introduce ideas for future research. Explain I am apart of security) (Explain why issue is important) Can the turnover rate of security guards at Heraeus be lowered? Points of Agreement: The turnover rate at Heraeus can be lowered depending on the areas you are asking about, but even then there are subareas that are points of disagreement. One point of agreement between the security officers and management is the policies and procedures are implemented to keep everyone safe and the speed of production dynamic. Some metals are time sensitive when they are being made. The guards and management believe that all the policies and procedures that are enacted are for a just reason. It can get dangerous in the plant and if there were no procedures, many of the employees would be hurt or worse. Management also wants to protect its metal which is why they implement how to follow the procedures. Security has no problem with management s procedures and policies and tries to follow them as best as possible. Another point of agreement is that procedures are evolutionary and adaptable. Because management is not active in the procedures, they concede that security knows how to adapt certain procedures to make them quicker and/or safer. If the adaptation happens with more security officers, then management will standardize that adapted procedure. Some of the adaptations that happen come from poorly trained guards, which is ... Summary Of Four Children For Sale By Roland Barthes Roland Barthes describes the punctum of a photograph as that accident which pricks me (but also bruises me, is poignant to me) (Barthes 27). The punctum of a photo is not meant to be the focus of the image. It is the detail that sparks interest. In the photograph 4 Children For Sale, credited to Bettmann Corbis, the punctum for me is the sign or maybe the facial expressions of the children or the mother herself. I say for me because the punctum of a photo is not the same for every person. Every person sees an image differently. Different things will be more prominent to different people because the punctum is unique to the specific spectator. However, I do not know exactly which detail acts as the punctum. According to Barthes, What I can name cannot really prick me (51). The punctum does not necessarily have to be one detail though. If the punctum is what stings at you, what ultimately bothers you, the punctum can be made up of multiple pricks. Multiple subtle details that stop you and make you think of the photo in a new light. Overall, the punctum is what makes you question and what engages you to the photo. The sign is at least one of the sources of the punctum which can be described as what I add to the photograph and what is nonetheless already there (55). The focus of the photograph should be the children considering they are the ones being advertised and yet my attention is constantly drawn to the actual sign and not simply its message. Molecular formula indicates the actual number of atoms of each element presented in a compound. Discrimination is an obvious example; by discriminating people because of race, gender, poverty status and age, it goes against all the social justice principles. By discriminating against a certain group of people, the government or everyday people strip them of their given rights, which is not at all acceptable. An example of racial discrimination in legal justice is refusing to hire a black man just because of his skin color, even though he is more qualified than the next person to be hired. This, of course, is illegal now but still occurs in less extremes. Another example of sexual discrimination is refusing to allow a female in the Senate; this happened in the 1800 s, but is still a great example of sexual discrimination. Social status is another form of discrimination; every time someone passes a less fortunate person begging for money, the automatic response is that they put themselves into that position because of drug or alcohol addictions. This is also another form of discrimination against these less fortunate people. Discrimination against age leads to disrespect of elders and teenagers; disrespect is another society issue that is still present today.
