While everyone has their own opinion, and is more than entitled to share it, other s beliefs and
thoughts influence most people. Politics and opinions of leaders on the way in which a country must
govern are often easy portals to access an impressionable mind. Throughout history, those with
opposing viewpoints on democracy have often spoke up and shared their opinions with the world in
hopes of being heard. Aristotle, Pericles and Xenophon have each taken a turn in doing so, and made
their feelings obvious to the people. All opinions were very different; Aristotle s being more of an
open minded approach towards democracy (not completely dismissing the idea of it), Pericles being in
total agreement with it, and Xenophon being sarcastic and exceptionally opposed.
In Pericles Funeral Oration , he speaks strongly in favor of a democratic nation and talks about how
and why that s important. He specifically mentions that personal freedoms are allowed because of
their democratic way of life, but also conveys the point that while the people were free to live for
themselves, they chose to live for one another as well, and all hoped to better the city as a positively
functioning society. Throughout the address he praises Athenians, their military, and explains to the
people how their system of government was to responsible for their success and that it set them apart
from other nations. His belief in Democracy was understandable and holds in a similar way today by
many people. But while democracy does help immensely with the formation of a nation, Pericles did

Discrimination is an obvious example; by discriminating people because of race, gender, poverty
status and age, it goes against all the social justice principles. By discriminating against a certain
group of people, the government or everyday people strip them of their given rights, which is not at all
acceptable. An example of racial discrimination in legal justice is refusing to hire a black man just
because of his skin color, even though he is more qualified than the next person to be hired. This, of
course, is illegal now but still occurs in less extremes. Another example of sexual discrimination is

From the Ground Up
The coffee shop where I wait for Karen is loud and busy. I sit and take notice of the people around me.
The shop is filled with young and old people alike, and I notice the differences between these two
generations. The younger crowd sits at almost silent tables everyone s eyes on the screens in front of
them. The older crowd sit and talk. Face to face with friends at their table and even with strangers at
other tables, by eavesdropping and then inserting themselves into the conversation. While some of the
younger people find this behavior rude, I find it oddly charming. When Karen comes in, I immediately
recognize her bright smile. Karen is an older woman with brown hair and kind eyes. Karen Bowman
and I worked together a few years ago at OK Foods. I am excited to see her and catch up on all the
office gossip. We find a quiet corner in the shop to talk. I am going into the Accounting field and I am
looking forward to learning more about this from her experience. Karen explains to me that she got
her first bit of experience from her mother, who taught her how to balance a checkbook and write
checks. Karen learned this at an early age, because her mother wanted to teach her about the practical
things in life. Another Lesson that Karen s mom taught her is, a woman could take care of things... run
