An Improved iUPQC Controller to Provide
Additional Grid-Voltage Regulation as a
STATCOM
Abstract
Certainly, power-electronics devices have brought about
great technological improvements. However, the increasing
number of power-electronics-driven loads used generally in the
industry has brought about uncommon power quality problems.
In contrast, power-electronics-driven loads generally require
ideal sinusoidal supply voltage in order to function properly,
whereas they are the most responsible ones for abnormal
harmonic currents level in the distribution system. In this
scenario, devices that can mitigate these drawbacks have been
developed over the years. Some of the solutions involve a
flexible compensator, known as the unified power quality
conditioner (UPQC) and the static synchronous compensator
(STATCOM).

In this configuration the series active filter is voltage
controlled in order to compensate the grid distortion, allowing
the load voltage to be consisted only by the fundamental

content. This way, the voltage compensated by the series active
filter is composed by a fundamental content in order to
compensate the sags/swells and the voltage unbalance, and by
the harmonics, the same harmonics which are intended to
compensate from the grid voltage, 180o phase shifted. The
parallel filter is current controlled and it is responsible for
draining the load current complementary harmonic contents,
allowing a sinusoidal grid current. The parallel filter may still
drain a fundamental content in order to compensate the load
displacement power factor. The series filter connection to the
utility grid is made through a transformer, while the parallel
filter is most of the time connected directly to the load
connection, in low voltage grid applications.
Proposed system
This paper proposes an improved controller, which expands
the iUPQC functionalities. This improved version of iUPQC
controller includes all functionalities of those previous ones,
including the voltage regulation at the load-side bus, and now
providing also voltage regulation at the grid-side bus, like a
STATCOM to the grid.

In modern power system consists of wide range of electrical, electronic and power electronic equipment in commercial and industrial applications. Since most of the electronic equipment’s are nonlinear in nature these will induce harmonics in the system, which affect the sensitive loads to be fed from the system. These problems are partially solved with the help of LC passive filters. However, this kind of filter cannot solve random variation in the load current wave form and voltage wave form. Active filters can resolve this problem. However, the cost of active filters is high. They are difficult to implement in large scale. Additionally, they also present lower efficiency than shunt passive filters. One of the many solutions is the use of a combined system of shunt and active series filters like Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) which aims at achieving a low cost under highly effective control. The UPQC device combines a shunt active filter together with a series active filter in a back-to-back configuration, to simultaneously compensate the supply voltage and the load current or to mitigate any type of voltage and current fluctuations and power factor correction in a power distribution network, such that improved power quality can be made available at the point of common coupling. The control strategies are modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The performance is also observed under influence of utility side disturbances such as harmonics and voltage sags. The simulation results are compared without and with UPQC for the verification of results.

Harmonics created by nonlinear loads such as arc furnaces, cycloconverters and motor drives destroys the power quality in the system. They not only affect the working of adjacent loads but also shorten the life of power equipment by creating excessive losses. ‘Shunt Active Power Filter’ is a modern addition to family of compensating devices. It has superior qualities over its contemporaries namely SVCs and STATCOMs. It not only mitigates harmonics within the allowable limits defined by IEEE Std 519-1992, but also compensates unbalancing and reactive power in the system. Consequently, only active power is supplied by the source thus power factor approaches unity. A fully functional Simulink model of Shunt Active Power Filter has been designed based on ‘Instantaneous Power Theory’ or ‘p-q Theory’. The results of simulation comply with all the features described by the theory, justifying employment of SAPF in the industry.

Several devices have been used to mitigate the power quality problems. Now a days researchers are concentrating on the use of FACT devices to overcome power quality issues. Unified Power Quality Conditioner is one among such FACT devices upon which this paper has concentrated for mitigating the Power Quality problems. Here a 3 phase 3 wire UPQC is realised using MATLAB/SIMULINK to mitigate voltage sag and swell as well as to maintain sinusoidal voltage and current at PCC irrespective of load dynamics.

Devices such as power electronics converters, inject harmonic currents in the AC system and increase overall reactive power demanded by the equivalent loads are presents non-linear characteristics. Also, the number of sensitive loads that require ideal sinusoidal supply voltages for their proper operation has increased. In order to keep power quality under limits proposed by standards, it is necessary to include some sort of compensation. The aim of this paper is to present a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) with minimization of DC Link voltage for the improvement of power quality by Fuzzy logic controller as compared with PI controller. By the proposed system is comprised of series and shunt Inverters which can compensate the sag, swell, unbalance voltage, Harmonics and reactive power. PI and fuzzy logic controllers are used to stabilize DC link voltage and balance the active power between shunt and series inverters for the enhancement of power quality.

Making of smart grids puts mounting pressure on the nation’s aging electric power transmission system. Just planting additional towers and stringing more line won’t practice the nation’s electric power transmission infrastructure to meet up the energy challenges ahead. Smart grids stand geared up to play a much larger role in the energy equation for reduction of transmission line losses. The FACTS controllers come out with the capability of enhancing transmission system control, reliability, and operation. This paper will discuss and express how Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) has effectively been applied to power system for efficiently regulating system voltage and thus increase system load ability. This paper investigates the effects of (STATCOM) on voltage stability of a power system at different positions.The simulation analysis of this paper can be used as guideline for power industry. The study is thereby simulated using the MATLAB/SIMULINK software and simulation results show that STATCOM is effective in midpoint voltage regulation on transmission line. In this paper comparison is also performed between STATCOM and SVC under fault condition and it is proved that STATCOM have the capacity to provide more capacitive power for the period of a fault than SVC.

Single-Phase Grid Connected Motor Drive System with DC-link Shunt Compensator and Small DC-link Capacitor The single-phase diode rectifier system with small DC-link capacitor shows wide diode conduction time and it improves the grid current harmonics. By shaping the output power, the system meets the grid current harmonics regulation without any power factor corrector or grid filter inductor. However, the system has torque ripple and suffers efficiency degradation due to the insufficient DC-link voltage. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the DC-link shunt compensator (DSC) for small DC-link capacitor systems. DSC is located on DC-node parallel and operates as the voltage source, improving the system performances. This circuit helps the grid current-shaping control during grid-connection time, and reduces the flux-weakening current by supplying the energy to the motor during grid-disconnection time. This paper presents a power control method and the design guideline of DSC. The feasibility of DSC is verified by simulation and experimental results. The utilization of energy has increased manifold because of the industrial revolution. The development of the induction motor by Nikola Tesla in 1888 triggered the increasing demand of electrical energy in the industrial world and also its usage for artificial lighting. Higher amount of energy required for present society is provided by means of electrical energy. Highly complicated power systems have been constructed to deal with the increasing demand. The development in electric power production is focused on the interconnecting the transmission lines, generators and loads into huge integrated systems, which helps in providing reliable and quality power system to the consumers.Power system stability is an idea that focuses on the way the system adjusts with the occurrence of disorder. These disorders can result because of switching off a load or a modification in the mechanical input to the system. Because of these disturbances oscillations may happen in the system that could ultimately build up to a larger extent, resulting in the synchronous generators to go out of step and lose synchronism.Due to the importance of the power system and its stability, there are several techniques developed by various researchers for the stabilization of the power systems. The paper addresses enhanced Artificial Bee Colony ABC technique applied to design a robust power system stabilizer PSS in order to improve transient and dynamic stabilities of a turbo alternator connected to an infinite bus system comparisons wind, thermal and solar power generations the design of the proposed controller initially is formulated as an optimization problem and then enhanced ABC is employed for obtaining optimal controller parameters. The results shows that the proposed algorithm are better in performance than the conventional methods.
