Simulation and Analysis of a D-STATCOM for Load Compensation and Power Facto...IJMER
Power Generation and Transmission is a complex process, requiring the working of many
components of the power system in tandem to maximize the output. One of the main components to form
a major part is the reactive power in the system. It is required to maintain the voltage to deliver the
active power through the lines. Loads like motor loads and other loads require reactive power for their
operation. To improve the performance of ac power systems, we need to manage this reactive power in
an efficient way and this is known as reactive power compensation. In developing countries like India,
where the variation of power frequency and many such other determinants of power quality are
themselves a serious question, it is very vital to take positive steps in this direction.
The work presented here illustrates a method to compensate for the load reactive power using a

A Voltage Controlled Dstatcom for Power Quality Improvementiosrjce
Due to increasing complexity in the power system, voltage sag is becoming one of the most significant
power quality problems. Voltage sag is a short reduction voltage from nominal voltage, occurs in a short time.
If the voltage sags exceed two to three cycles, then manufacturing systems making use of sensitive electronic
equipments are likely to be affected leading to major problems. It ultimately leads to wastage of resources (both
material and human) as well as financial losses. This is possible only by ensuring that uninterrupted flow of
power is maintained at proper voltage levels. This project tends look at the solving the sag problems by using
custom power devices such as Distribution Static compensator (D-STATCOM).Proposed scheme follows a new
algorithm to generate reference voltage for a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) operating in
voltage-control mode. The proposed scheme ensures that unity power factor (UPF) is achieved at the load
terminal during nominal operation, which is not possible in the traditional method. Also, the compensator
injects lower currents therefore, reduces losses in the feeder and voltage-source inverter. Further, a saving in
the rating of DSTATCOM is achieved which increases its capacity to mitigate voltage sag. Nearly UPF is
maintained, while regulating voltage at the load terminal, during load change. The state-space model of
DSTATCOM is incorporated with the deadbeat predictive controller for fast load voltage regulation during
voltage disturbances. With these features, this scheme allows DSTATCOM to tackle power-quality issues by
providing power factor correction, harmonic elimination, load balancing, and voltage regulation based on the
load requirement.
Power Quality Improvement Using A DVR (Dynamic Voltage Restorer)
ABSTRACT
Power quality is one of major problems in the today’s scenario. It has become important with the introduction of complex devices, whose performance is very sensitive to the quality of power supply. Power quality problem is an occurrence developed as a nonstandard voltage, current or frequency that results in a failure of end use equipment. Some of the major problems dealt here is the power sag and swell. This paper describes the effectiveness of using dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) in order to mitigate voltage sags and swells in low voltage distribution systems. Dynamic Voltage Restorer can provide the most cost effective solution to mitigate voltage sags and swells that is required by customer. The Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is a rapid, flexible and resourceful solution to power quality problems.

Now-a-days, power generation and utilization became more complicated which further affects the economy of a country. The available non-renewable energy sources that supply the demanded power do not consider environmental challenges like global warming and pollution. This leads to the development of power generation based on Renewable Energy Resources (RES). These RES are connected to the grid through power electronic converters which offer countless power quality issues that must be rectified to deliver a quality power to the end users. The proposed work uses a three phase Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) based Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) fed by solar Photo Voltaic (PV) system to eliminate current harmonics at the source side of the grid. The output of the PV system is given to a boost converter along with self–lift single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) for supplying high voltage gain which is accompanied by a Perturb & Observe Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT).The main objective of this paper is to eliminate the current harmonics at the grid side using SAPF. Also, the proposed SAPF is used for exporting the power generated from PV to the grid. The overall system performance is validated with a help of MATLAB/SIMULINK.

Improved Power Quality by using STATCOM Under Various Loading ConditionsIJMTST Journal
A Power quality problem is an occurrence manifested as a nonstandard voltage, current or frequency that
results in a failure or a mis-operation of end user equipment’s. Utility distribution networks, sensitive
industrial loads and critical commercial operations suffer from various types of outages and service
interruptions which can cost significant financial losses. With the restructuring of power systems and with
shifting trend towards distributed and dispersed generation, the issue of power quality is going to take
newer dimensions. Injection of the wind power into an electric grid affects the power quality. The
performance of the wind turbine and thereby power quality are determined on the basis of measurements
and the norms followed according to the guideline specified in International Electro-technical Commission
standard, IEC-61400. The influence of the wind turbine in the grid system concerning the power quality
measurements are-the active power, reactive power, variation of voltage, flicker, harmonics, and electrical
behavior of switching operation and these are measured according to national/international guidelines.
Static Compensator (STATCOM) is connected at a point of common coupling with a battery energy storage
system (BESS) to mitigate the power quality issues. The battery energy storage is integrated to sustain the
real power source under fluctuating wind power. Here two control schemes for STATCOM are Fuzzy logic
controller and hybrid Fuzzy logic controller. We can better response for hybrid fuzzy compare to fuzzy logic
controller. The STATCOM control scheme for the grid connected wind energy generation system for power
quality improvement is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK in power system block set. Finally the proposed
scheme is applied for both balanced and unbalanced linear nonlinear loads.
STATCOM is one of the shunt type FACTS controllers which can supply reactive power and improve bus voltage. STATCOM, a controlling device used on alternating current transmission networks, has advantages like transient free switching and smooth variation of reactive power. This paper proposes a cascaded multilevel inverter type DSTATCOM and DVR to compensate voltage sag in utilities in power distribution network. The proposed DSTATCOM is implemented using multilevel topology with isolated dc energy storage and reduced number of switches. A DVR injects a voltage in series with the system voltage and a D-STATCOM implant a current into the system to correct the voltage sag, swell and interruption. The phase shifter PWM technique is described to generate firing pulse to cascaded inverter. The proposed neuro-fuzzy controller follow itself to the sag and provides effective means of mitigation. The voltage sag with the minimum harmonic at the efficacy end. The proposed technique is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink.

Stability Enhancement of Pleiku Power System using a Distribution Static Sync...IJAEMSJORNAL
This paper presents the simulation results of using a static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) based on voltage source converter (VSC) to enhance voltage stability and improve the stability of the actual Pleiku Power System. The PI controller based D-STATCOM is applied to stabilize and improve voltage waveforms at load buses in the studied power system under three-phase short circuit fault. Simulation results in a time domain are presented to show effectiveness of using the D-STATCOM for stability and improvement of voltage quality when small disturbances occur, and of enhancing voltage magnitude, mitigating voltage oscillation in transient conditions under a severe disturbance in the power system.
Assessment of the Static Stability Margin and Voltage Profile Improvement in ...Dr. Amarjeet Singh
The huge increase in the demand of electric power and the economic constraints to build new facilities, lead the power systems to operate near of their stability limits. Indeed, instability has become a major problem in the management of power systems. Unavoidable disturbances such as short circuits, momentary unavailability of transmission lines, generators as well as transformers can affect the stability of the power system at any time and bring it into a state of instability or collapse. These collapses become a major problem for energy consumers, because the lack of energy leads them to use backup energy sources that are relatively expensive and polluting. This situation lowers the productivity of the industry, and for the national electric company of the Congo, (SNEL), the time to get rid of the magnetization of the network and to take all the loads, can generate penalties, which is a loss of revenue for the company. This paper aims to assess the stability margin and to improve the quality of electrical energy in the south-SNEL transmission system.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

2. ABSTRACT:
The main aim of this paper is the voltage regulation
& power quality which is the most important
operational requirements in power network at both
transmission and distribution levels. Whenever
there is a penetration of photovoltaic cell power to
the low voltage distribution grid, there occur the
problem of mismatch in voltage and frequency in
the network, perhaps caused by non linear
loads, generating harmonics. In this D-STATCOM is
used to improve the voltage regulation thereby the
power system stability.
2
3. OBJECTIVES
To analyze the effect of non-linear loads on power
system.
To study different methods already proposed for
mitigation
of
harmonics
due
to
nonlinear loads.
To propose a Best way to mitigate the current
harmonics and reactive power compensation.
3
5. INTRODUCTION
In today’s scenario power quality maintenance in a power
system is very essential because of the increase in different types
of loads that pollute power systems.
The use of the power electronic devices in power distribution
system gives rise to harmonics and reactive power disturbances.
o
A voltage dip will occur, if the reactive power is consumed from
the grid, this affects other sensitive loads which are connected to
the grid.
Hence compensation is necessary for these types of loads for
requiring reactive power.
5
6.
There are two approaches to the mitigation of power quality
problems.
1. load conditioning 2. line-conditioning
Passive filters have been most commonly used to limit the
flow of harmonic currents in distribution systems.
The performances of Conventional method (LC filter) is
not satisfactory due to the drawbacks
Among the different new technical options available to
improve power quality, D-STATCOM have proved to be an
important and flexible alternative to compensate for current
and voltage disturbances in power distribution systems.
6
8. DISTRIBUTION STATIC SYNCHRONOUS
COMPENSATOR (D-STATCOM)
oD-STATCOM is the most important controller for distribution networks. It
has been widely used to precisely regulate system voltage, improve
voltage profile, reduce voltage harmonics, reduce transient voltage
disturbances and load compensation.
oD-STATCOM uses a power-electronics converter to synthesize the
reactive power output.
oA D-STATCOM converter is controlled using pulse width modulation
(PWM) or other voltage/current-shaping techniques .
8
9. General Topology
D-STATCOM controllers can be constructed based on both voltage source
inverter (VSI) topology and current source inverter (CSI) topology
In practice, CSI topology is not used for D-STATCOM. The reason for this is
related to the higher losses on the DC reactor of CSI compared to the DC
capacitor of VSI.
VSI-based topology has the advantage because an inductance of a coupling
transformer Tr (if present) can constitute, partially or completely, the inductance of
AC filter
The VSI converters for D-STATCOM are constructed based on multi-level
topologies, with or without use of a transformer. These solutions provide support
for operation with a high level of terminal voltage

In this paper we have modeled and analyzed the PV

inverter and other side we have different loads in
that, most of the unbalanced nonlinear loads injects
harmonic currents to source side and effects the source

and performance of D-statcom at unbalanced non linear
load condition and also gives the comparison by using with
and without D-statcom. This proposed model is
implemented using MATLAB SIMULINK software and the
obtained resultant waveforms are evaluated and system
stability effectiveness and power system performance
have been established.
