Islam And Western Imperialism In Islam
Although the Islamic world has faced many challenges throughout history, Islam s encounter with
Western imperialism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has had the greatest impact on
contemporary Islam. These encounters with Western powers influenced and shaped the Muslim world
by introducing Islam to modernity. The Islamic world s varied reaction to these challenges of
modernity affects a wide range of issues in Islam today. To understand how the Muslim world reacted
to Western influence, we must understand what they were reacting to. With the fall of the Ottoman
Empire, European political ideas permeated the Middle East. Muslims were forced to respond to ideas
of nationhood, nationalism, democracy, and sovereignty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Modernists claimed these institutions were not foreign to Islam and could coexist within an Islamic
state. Rashid al Rida argued Islam was democratic and representative because Islamic leadership is
determined through consensus of the community. According to Rida, an Islamic state requires Islamic
legal systems, where the uluma are representatives of the people. Other Islamic modernists such as
Muhammad Abduh and Muhammad Iqbal also attempted to balance Western ideologies with the
Islamic faith. According to Abduh, reason and science were complementary to Islam. Iqbal also
believed some Western ideas were compatible with Islam. Iqbal applied reasoning to help understand
Islamic female inheritance laws. One interpretation of these laws is that a woman is worth half a man.
Iqbal argued the share of female inheritance is not based on a woman s value, but rather on social
context specific to a certain period. He claimed these laws applied to a time when women had less
financial responsibility than men. This type of logic and reasoning still exists in contemporary
Pakistani law. Both Abduh and Iqbal believed certain aspects of Western influence could be applied to
Islamic society, as long as those ideas did not contradict Islam. Other movements within Islam have
directly challenged the Islamic modernists ideas on Western influence. Unlike Islamic

Informative Speech On Water
Speech Paloma
Water covers 70% of our planet, and it is easy to think that it will always be plentiful. However,
freshwater, what we drink, bathe in, irrigate our farm fields with makes up only 3% of the world s
water, and two thirds of that is stored in frozen glaciers or unavailable for our use. Many of the water
systems that keep ecosystems thriving and feed a growing human population have become stressed.
Rivers, lakes and aquifers are drying up or becoming too polluted to use. Already, 80 countries suffer
from water shortages that threaten health and economies while 40 percent of the world more than 2
billion people does not have access to clean water or sanitation
We usually associate water shortages with a lack of drinking water, but global water scarcity has a
critical impact on food security. Agriculture consumes more water than any other source. Climate
change is altering patterns of weather around the world, causing shortages and droughts in some areas
and floods in others. Water is key to food security. Crops and livestock need water to grow.
Agriculture requires large quantities of water for irrigation and various production processes. Water
scarcity may limit food production and supply, putting pressure on food prices and increasing
countries dependence on food imports
Less water means farming and other crops that need water to grow have lower yield. Water is needed
to ensure food security, to feed livestock, and to conserve the biodiversity and environment.
Australia
With the growing population of the world, demand for food is increasing. This means that Australian
farmers are struggling to provide enough food for the global market, and clean water for irrigation is
as important as ever. In Australia, agriculture is the largest consumer of water, representing around
70% of our total annual water consumption. Australia is a major exporter of food, particularly wheat
and beef, to the rest of the world. In 2009, 60% of Australia s agricultural produce was exported
overseas. Overall meat production is expected to double by 2050, meaning that even more pressure
will be put on the Australian meat industry. Recent droughts have meant that less water has been
allocated to irrigating crops,

Sympathy In Antigone
Lauren Rostkowski

Sympathy for Strong Character
Often in a work of literature, an author will create a set of characters whose purpose is to contrast their
defining qualities. The purpose of this technique is to highlight the composure of a well constructed
individual and emphasize how these characteristics can lead to the discovery of the good life. The
author may also call attention to a character s persona by fabricating scenarios in which he or she is
faced with an obstacle that forces them to question their own values and the values of those
surrounding them. Throughout the play, Antigone, by Sophocles, the titular character is faced with an
obstacle which threatens her relationship with her uncle, King ... Show more content on

His stubborn reign and obsession with power inevitably leads to the death of Antigone, his son, and
beloved queen. In his position as king, he denies the power of the gods and believes that his decisions
are infallible. This is most evident when Kreon s son, Haimon, attempts to open the mind of his
headstrong and irrational father (Sophocles 645 668). When he suggests that the opinions of Antigone
and the entirety of Thebes must be taken into consideration, Kreon states that he has caught Antigone
disobeying openly and he shall not falsify himslef before the city. He ll kill her while she sings to Zeus
of blood kinship (Sophocles 655 658). Through this argument with his son, Kreon reveals yet another
faulty element to his character. Not only does he discount the ideals of the people he rules, but also the
practices of the gods. During that time period, a love for kin and the honor for a proper burial was
crucial to religion (Sophocles 645 668). The rejection of this critical aspect diminished all possible
reasons for condolence, and placed Antigone on a pedestal for her restless desire to praise the gods

Gender Bias In The Workplace
Sexism women still face gender bias in the workplace. The stereotype e.g. women more likely to take
a housekeeping job, secretarial tasks or even be look at taking notes at a college meeting. Ageism it s
been known that because of a person age, he/she been discriminated against for job advancement.
Race refers to the practice of treating people differently because of the race. I have personally heard
on my past job that the manager is looking to hire a Caucasian person, yes this still exists in toady
time. Discrimination will always be a around it will take a miracle for this to come to an end not only
within the workplace.
Problems
The problem with feminist theory is gender free morality may be impossible. In today era, many
people don t agree that women should have equal pay as men within the work place. Even though laws
have been passed to equal pay, however when it comes to equal pay a lot of company still don t
comply with this ruling.
Model
The feminist model is described as conflict resolution. Feminist model aims to resolve inequality on
multiple levels of existence. In addition, feminist model of conflict determination identifies sources of
conflict as results of oppression prolonged by dominant. e.g. if a male and a female walk over to the
automotive service department to get their car work on, and the worker come out and automatic
address the male with the question, how may I help you , the worker is looking at the male as the
dominant person.

Heart Of Darkness Analysis
In the novel Heart of Darkness, the characters who spend time in the heart of the jungle in the Congo,
seem to change as time passes by. One of the men who is most dramatically affected from this change
is Mr. Kurtz. This relates to what Pauline Hopkins once said in Contending Forces, And, after all, our
surroundings influence our lives and characters as much as fate, destiny or any supernatural agency.
Mr. Kurtz goes from a man with a loving fiance and great attributes to man with no morals and the
need for power. Mr. Kurtz was once a man with morals, but once he because a victim of the
overwhelming power he had in the jungle, he abandoned the person he once was. He originally
believed he could bring light to the Congo, which was shown with his painting of the woman, Then I
noticed a small sketch in oils... representing a woman, draped and blindfolded, carrying a lighted
torch. The background was somber almost black. 21 22 This shows how he uses the torch to show
how Kurtz is trying to bring light into the the jungle where only darkness is found. Despite this act,
Kurtz soon changes his view of light and dark, his actions become sinister and his main worry
becomes the obtainment of ivory and power over the Company. Kurtz becomes a God in the natives
eyes and he uses this to his advantage. They hold ceremonies in which sacrifices are made to him and
praise him like a God, .. caused him to preside at certain midnight dances ending with unspeakable

Democracy And Its Lack Of Democracy
Throughout Plato s Republic in Book VIII, readers are caught up in the conversation about four unjust
structures that each structure will succeed the other as society decays. The four unjust structures are
explained throughout dialogue and described as timocracy, oligarchy, democracy, and tyranny. Most
shocking critique throughout the discussion is about democracy and its ineffectiveness to rule. Plato s
disagreement of democracy does not involve of what we are acquainted with today, but rather the idea
of democracy. Plato explores the central strain of the government that is acknowledged with liberty
and fairness. Also, this form of government known for its embracement of freedom and equality. Plato
s description and disagreement about democracy is correct because the consequences of such
government is that it leads the population to pursue unnecessary desires.
Democracy is the type of government where the rule comes from people. Democracy, as we know it
today, gives power to the many and in turn give most importance to the idea of obtaining freedom.
Freedom empowers people to pursue their desires and obtain every opportunity they can acquire.
People in this government have unlimited mobility and have free speech to their ideas and beliefs.
However, Plato s argument is that this freedom will the downfall for this type of government and how

John Kotter s Eight Stage Change Model
Abstract
This paper discusses John Kotter s Eight Stage Change Model and how it can be used as a guide when
implementing change within an organization. The roles of various stakeholders including senior and
emerging leaders, managers and employees throughout the eight stages are defined. In addition,
factors which can contribute to a failed organization change initiative are discussed.
Transforming an organization from a sub optimizing enterprise of independently functioning
departments to an organization that embraces cross functional teams and customer centric integrated
processes that focuses on delivering quality products and services requires a well defined and
implemented plan of action. In addition, transforming an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

is at this stage that employees either accept or reject the organizational transformation. Sincere belief
in the transformation initiatives by employees is essential for success. Stage Five of the Kotter Model
allows for the employees to take risks or make changes to internal process that are impeding the
transformation effort. The success of the implementation of Stages One through Four will provide
employees the confidence and trust they need that will allow them to make suggestions or change
legacy processes that will add to the success of the transformation. Stage Six of the Kotter Model is
designed for the achievement of milestones throughout the course of the organizational
transformation. Stage Six includes creating short term wins that allows the organization to see
improvements and success which builds momentum (Kotter, 2007, p. 4). The momentum experienced

Sophocles Electra And Not The Orestes
Why is the play called the Electra and not the Orestes? That is, in what way does Sophocles make
Electra, and not Orestes, the focus of his play? Three great Athenian tragic poets Aeschylus, Sophocles
and Euripides addressed to the myth about the killing of Clytemnestra by Orestes. Sophocles s Electra
is one of the interpretations of this legend. Although the avenging one is Orestes, Sophocles brings
Electra to the fore because of her endless hatred and the will to take her revenge against her father s
murderers. First of all, Electra saves young Orestes from their mother Clytemnestra and her lover
Aegisthus who have killed Agamemnon Electra and Orestes s father. Paedagogus says: I rescued you,
entrusted by your sister s hand (Sophocles, Electra 13). Electra herself stays in the father s palace, but
she is no longer the lady there I labour in my father s house (Sophocles, Electra 183). So she has to
live with murderers and bear their treatment. The second reason to focus on Electra instead of Orestes
is her strength to fight against her own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Electra s attitude to the others is Sophocles s attitude and the only right position. Electra becomes the
center of the play: she stands near Agamemnon s tomb and people come to her and speak, so the

but Electra is the force behind him. She says to Orestes: You never were your mother s boy so much as
mine (Sophocles, Electra 1113). At the end of the play, when the siblings are revenging, Electra is at
the height of her cruelty. It gets obvious that years of grief and torture have made her tough and
affected her mind, she has become obsessive with the idea of the revenge. But Sophocles asserts it is

Essay Comparing Wagner And Kreisler
Though generations apart, Richard Wagner and Fritz Kreisler both display correlations not only in
musical presentation and development but also in the consistencies and adversities regarding their
lives. Despite their disparities, Wagner and Kreisler prove to have transformed music through their
innovations in their own compositions. Regarding their biography, Wagner and Fritz have paraded
their interests in music from an early age. Fritz Kreisler, born February 2, 1875, embodied the persona
of a true child prodigy starting at the age of 4 when he was given a violin and with no prior knowledge
of scales or notes he was able to play the Austrian National Anthem from start to finish perfectly. This

Unable to resist Wagner, Cosima divorced von Bulow and married Wagner the same year of 1870.
Lastly regarding their biography, both artists died from a case of heart failure. Suffering from cases
leading toward hearing loss and sight deterioration due to cataracts and his previous accidents
including his coma from getting stuck by a bus in New York, Kreisler passed away in 1962 from a

Ring Of Roses Meaning
Ring of roses a poem and a game of children singing and dancing around in a circle. The famous
children s nursery rhyme Ring of Roses is believed to be based on the black bubonic plague that
struck Europe over the course of the 13th 16th century. In my opinion it makes sense when you

to the plague.
Over time the nursery rhyme has differed in verses. The lyrics changing depending on the cultures and
period in time it has been sung. As the poem has been passed down through the periods the
adaptations of modern language has effected it but overall the verses always seem to be of the same
meaning. There are typically two main verses to the poem but with many different versions of it.

Essay about Recurring Decimals
Recurring Decimals Infinite yet rational, recurring decimals are a different breed of numbers.
Mathematicians, in turn, have been fascinated by these special numbers for over two thousand years.
The Hindu Arabic base 10 system we use today was inspired by the Chinese method of decimals
which was actually around 10000 years old. Decimals may have been around for a very long time, but
what about recurring decimals? In fact the ancient Greeks were one of the first to deal with recurring
decimals. The Greek mathematician Zeno had a paradox in which the answer was a finite number that
was a sum of an infinite sequence. The answer to his problem was a recurring decimal, and it
definitely would not be the last time recurring decimals played ... Show more content on

What about the number n ? Can the period of the number 1/n be found also? These questions are what
I hope to answer in my project. Before utilizing mathematical resources, I decided to approach my
problem from scratch and just experiment with numbers on a lazy Sunday morning. The patterns I
encountered when working with these numbers were stunning; to keep things simple, I started with
small numbers as denominators. Soon enough, I realized that the primes 2 and 5 do not produce any
recurring decimals. 3 only provides one repeating digit, and yet 9 does too. The number 7 produces 6
repeating digits, but the number 11 only produces two digits. What is going on here? Well, it appears
that some primes p have p 1 repeating digits, but not all of them. However, all primes except 2 and 5
seem to have a period that is (p 1)/n long, where n is some integer. What about the squares of primes?
I would like to give the example of 3; although 9 (3x3) has the same number of repeating digits as 3
(1), 27 actually has three repeating digits. Even more stunning, 81 (3^4) has nine repeating digits. It
appears as if as the number is raised by a power of 3, then the number of repeating digits is also raised
to some power. The number 3 is actually an exception to the general rule that I will mention, and the
repeating digits of 3 to the nth power is just 3^(n 2). A conventional example is 7; 7 has 6 repeating
digits but 49 (7x7) has 42 (6x7)

The Three Long Weeks The Washington Area Is Terrorized By...
The Beltway Snipers Three long weeks the Washington area was terrorized by a series of random
sniper attacks. At first, the shootings seemed to be random, but were soon discovered to be
coordinated attacks by John Allen Muhammad and his accomplice named Lee Boyd Malvo. The
sniper s claimed the lives of ten victims over the span of three weeks time, starting the second of
October 2002 and ending around the 23 of October. Following leads, the police found a tree stump in
their back yard that had been used for practicing. The two men were found sleeping in their car at a
rest stop, in possession of guns matching the ballistics of the bullets found at the crime scenes.
According to Crime Museum, in 2003 Muhammad was convicted on two counts of capital murder,
homicide committed with intent to terrorize government or the public at large, conspiracy to commit
murder, and the illegal use of a firearm. (Crime Museum) In March 2004, a judge from Virginia
sentenced Muhammad to death. In 2009 Muhammad was executed by lethal injection. Boyd was also
charged twice with capital murder and the unlawful use of a firearm. Boyd pleaded not guilty on all
charges because of insanity stating that he was under Muhammad s complete control according to
Crime Museum. According to the book, Mastering Sociology, written by James Henslin the
differential association theory was developed by Edwin Sutherland. The differential association theory

Emily Dickinson s A Narrow Fellow In The Grass
The poem A narrow Fellow in the Grass by Emily Dickinson is a complex poem due to the unyielding
personification, dynamic similes, and powerful symbolism. Right from the beginning the
personification is strong in the poem. She refers to the snake as A narrow Fellow (Line 1). Comparing
the snake to an actual man is showing personification for the snake. Dickinson also says that the snake
Occasionally rides (2), which is obviously something a person does so that is showing personification

Examples Of Chivalry In Beowulf
Some say chivalry is dead , I don t think so. Chivalry is a code of conduct governing a knight s
behavior. It s the combination of qualities expected of an ideal person, especially bravery, loyalty, and
honor. One of the main elements of chivalry is bravery, in the story we read Beowulf s last Battle, an
example of braver was , He could see how his king was suffering ... Wiglaf mind was made up ; he
raised his yellow shield and drew his sword. in the story Wiglaf went back to help his king fight, that
showed bravery. An example of bravery today is people going/volunteer in the military and army. That
shows bravery because, you re sacrificing your life for other and your country. The second element of
chivalry is loyalty, in the story we read called Le Monte d Arthur, an example of loyalty was My lords,
I am reluctant to shed christian blood in a war against my own liege. He is showing loyalty to his king
by not wanting to go to war with him. An example of Loyalty today is people being loyal to their
country, like pledging to the flag, that shows loyalty to your country. ... Show more content on

What Is the Importance of Accountability in the Military...
What is the importance of accountability in the military and in the work place? What is accountability
by definition: (Department Of Defense) The obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation
on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. The person
having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds.
Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with
custody, care, and safekeeping. Accountability is very important because it allows for your chain of

Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that s why the team member should make sure
that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all times. The
Army spends a lot of money on equipment and belongings for the soldiers, so the Army expects to
know where its equipment is. No matter what someone is always responsible for equipment in the
Army. Accountability is important because it assures someone that needs will be met. If someone is
accountable, you can trust that they will do what they claimed. Without accountability you would not
be able to put your trust in someone to complete a job for you and other members of the team, or even
show up on time to an important event ,or formation. It is important because it holds each and
everyone accountability for his or her actions.Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept
responsibility or to account for ones actions. Now for the Army, it becomes an obligation more than
willingness while you have to be willing to do it as well. Those that are unable to be accountable are
the ones that jeopardize the combat readiness of any unit. Basically it is the understanding that from
the bottom up. Top down and laterally everyone is going to do and is willing to do the right thing even
when no one else is looking. This is practiced at your home base where everyone is assigned

Beach Burial Poem Analysis
Throughout history, poetry was often used in conflict with glorified or ambiguous images of war being
presented to the people at home, revealing the truth and brutality of war. Bruce Dawe, Kenneth
Slessor, Carol Ann Duffy and Wilfred Owen are well known anti war poets who express their concerns
ad objections of war through poetry. Dawe s Homecoming and Slessor s Beach Burial explore the
vastness of war and the futile magnitude of soldiers who had fallen in battle, never to return home.
Contrastingly, Duffy s War Photographer and Owen s Arms and the Boy comment on the disability of
psychologically returning home, exploring the corruption of innocence and youth, with those involved
in war never to return home as the same person.

Duffy uses four regular, six line stanzas to impose order amongst the agonies in black and white, the
photographer has to not only develop as a part of his job, but to psychologically grapple with in the
remainder of his life. Similarly, Owen has employed three regular, four line stanzas, however this
structural order emulates the removal of freedom that comes with youth, expressing the corruption of
the soldiers ability to return to their innocence. Duffy ends each stanza in a rhyming couplet to
strengthen the routine placed amidst the chaos of war and drive home her point of the psychological
aftermath of war on everyone involved. Contrastingly, Owen utilises pararhymes flash / flesh , teeth /
death to denote the inaptness of young boys being armed with weapons, forced to soon mature to
escape their foreseeable death, never to return as innocent youths. Duffy s use of sibilance spools of
suffering causes the reader to hiss words, emphasising the prevalent callousness of war. Similarly,
Owen has incorporated sibilance Sharp with the sharpness to augment the malevolency associated
with weaponry, disengaging young soldiers from their innocence, never to be the same again. Owen

The Impact of Interpersonal Communication in Startup Businesses

If you do not have the ability to have interpersonal skills then you will struggle to express any feelings
or emotions with people as well as empathize with various situations.
If you are working in an environment where you are required to interact with colleagues and
customers on a daily basis, then you need to have good interpersonal skills. This is especially
important with customers because you have to show them that you have a friendly nature and can
understand their frustrations if they re experiencing a problem or making a request. It is also a good
skill to have when you are speaking with your colleagues because if you come across as cold and
uninterested then you may receive negative feedback.
Research s Contribution
Communication skill is required in order to make the communication runs smoothly. Unfortunately,
not everyone has communication skills. Many people who communicate only rely on their daily
communication style. They consider ways of communication that they use is correct. Sadly, if we
observe the process of the communication, there are still a lot of mistakes in communicating. This
research is expected to be useful to students of TANRI ABENG UNIVERSITY that own startup
business as a guidance to: build harmony relationship with customers, investors or venture capitalists,
and among partners.

Feminism And Cyberfeminism
Cyberfeminism is an offset of feminism characterized as a range of theories, debates, and practices
about the relationship between gender and digital culture (Daniels 102). While this definition
addresses some of the most basic ideas associated with Cyberfeminism, it is not actually a theory with
a universally accepted definition, but rather centers on a number of central ideas and practices.
However, it is generally accepted that the preliminary concepts of cyberfeminism, namely the idea of
a cyborg, were presented by Donna Haraway in her 1984 piece A Cyborg Manifesto. While her article
was written in the mid 80 s, Cyberfeminism achieved popularity in the late 80 s and 90 s in relation to
the blossoming technological advances, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The goal of adopting the cyborg figure is to lessen such power, in order to create a society in which
those with partial or contradictory identities may embrace those identities proudly, without fear of
policing or invisibility (295). One tactic recommended in this Manifesto, and later echoed in various
Cyberfeminist works, is irony. Irony, according to Haraway, is so effective because it draws attention
to pieces that do not fit neatly into a larger whole, as well as the tensions that arise from holding
incompatible things together because all are necessary and true (291). In fact, it s these tensions
themselves, the consequences of hardships of living a hybrid life that become the focus of some later
Cyberfeminist works, such as the struggle between the physical and the non physical, or between the
physical body and an online persona. What remains central, however, is Haraway s insistence that
such an examination of tension, or benefit, never become totalizing. One cannot rely on essential unity
(295) to define or understand something, especially something as complex as a board crossing,
boundary dissolving cyborg. That idea carries over to Cyberfeminist activism, ideology, and theory.
Just as Haraway speaks against a unified idea of women based on perceived, inherent characteristics,
including innate innocence

Essay on Comparing the Two Versions of To Build a Fire
Comparing the Two Versions of To Build a Fire
I am absolutely confident that beyond the motif itself, there is no similarity of treatment whatever
(544). Jack London, writing in December 1908, was responding to an inquiry from the Richard W.
Gilder, editor of Century Magazine. Gilder, having just published To Build a Fire in his magazine, was
worried when he came across another version published 6 years earlier. London s explanation was that
the first story was for boys and the new one was for men; the only similarity being the motif itself.
Through careful analysis of the two stories, in light of this letter to Gilder, and another letter to
Cloudesly Johns, it is apparent that although London claims no similarities ... Show more content on

This ending more clearly illustrates the dangers of the Klondike. The first version is more a morality
tale, ending with the moral of Never travel alone! (62). The second version is more of a good short
story, with the ending that is, regrettably, all too common in that part of the world. The main character
never gets a chance to change his ways and travel with a companion the proverbial next time. He
learns the lesson with the most severest of consequences: death. Another interesting difference is the
fact that in the 1902 version the main character is Tom Vincent; however in the second version, the
man has no name. This gives the main character in the 1908 version a feeling of universality.
In 1900, before either of these two stories was published, Jack London wrote a letter to a good friend,
Cloudesly Johns, explaining his philosophy on good fiction writing. This letter is an invaluable
resource when studying the work of Jack London, especially when comparing the two versions of To
Build a Fire. London emphasized quite a bit in this letter with many exclamation points and capital
letters. That was only because of the passion with which he was writing about writing. His main point
was to not be to scientific, or empirically (530) scientific. He explains not to tell the reader what your
philosophy is, but rather to have the characters tell it by their deeds, actions, talk, etc. (531). He then
moves on to talk about atmosphere, and

Disinfectant Lab Report
Our science experiment was to try and figure out which disinfectant was the most effective on killing
bacteria. We chose seven different disinfectants and tested them on gram positive and gram negative
bacteria to see which would have the largest zone of inhibition after 23 hours in an incubator at 28
degrees. This experiment taught me a lot of useful things for the future such as what the most effective
way of cleaning is. We decided to do this project because we wanted to know if what people used to
clean their houses was really doing the job.
For our science experiment, we tested household disinfectants against gram positive, and gram
negative bacteria. To begin with, one of the main differences between gram positive and gram
negative bacteria is the structural differences in their cell walls. Gram negative has an inner
membrane, a small layer of peptidoglycan (which is a substance that forms in most bacteria that acts
as a back bone to the cell wall giving it strength), then another membrane and the cell wall. The
peptidoglycan is sandwiched between two lipid (fat) layers. Gram positive bacteria have just
peptidoglycan but they have a lot of it making them stronger. Secondly, the gram in gram positive and
gram negative refers to how a bacterium reacts to a gram stain. To ... Show more content on

My first point is that without the use of disinfectants, there would be germs absolutely everywhere.
From doorknobs to table counters, germs and endless bacteria would take over. Next, with all of these
germs out in the air and on all surfaces, infection and sickness would spread like wildfire. Even
though there are medication to cure infection and disease, we would need great amounts to help many
people. In conclusion, we would all be inevitably doomed. Infection and disease would eventually
take over without disinfectants leaving nothing. The use of disinfectants is extremely important
because without it everyone would be very

Examples Of Alienation In Catcher In The Rye
Alienation outcasts: The reason why the characters we ve read about feel victimized by society is
because of their differences, they believe that people aren t real/truthful with them and they retaliate

roommate Ackley asked him if he knew who won the fencing match Holden responded with I don t
know and I don t give a damn. How bout sitting down or something, Ackley kid? Holden acted very
rude when his roommate asked him simple question. He distances himself when people actually want

Ignorance And Apathy
Ignorance and Apathy
The thought of the International Days of Prayer passing by unnoticed by a large segment of the
American Christian population distresses me. No doubt, there are some Christians who rely solely on
the secular media for news and information. Those individuals may actually be unaware of the
extreme suffering endured by Christians across the globe. But how many simply look the other way to
avoid the inconvenient truth of persecution? Still, others just don t care about issues that do not
directly affect them.
Let us consider the example set by Yeshua (Jesus) as we approach the International Days of Prayer.
Yeshua (Jesus) prayed that His Father would protect His disciples from the Evil One. (John 17:15)

Analysis Of Hey Boo, By Harper Lee
Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, never expected her novel to be as successful as it
was and is. Her success from the novel did not come so easily. Lee finally met with a publisher and
editor, Tay Hohoff, in New York after receiving a number of rejection letters in 1957. While living in
New York, Harper Lee s lifelong friends, the Brown s, had faith in her success and presented her with
enough money to take a year off from work to write a literary phenomenon called To Kill a
Mockingbird. The video Hey Boo revealed the meaningful purpose behind the novel, To Kill a
Mockingbird, and demonstrated the major influences it had on the people s and nation s internal
moralities and views during the 1960 s. This film illustrates the

Baseball Game Vs Bowling Case Study
Evaluating Survey
The best part of the survey creation and distribution was the evaluation of other minor league teams
across the northeastern part of the United States. There should have been much more focus on that and
utilization of experienced sources from those clubs. Springfield is not in a competition with other
baseball markets for fan bases as most of the attendance for the Nor easters probably won t travel
further than 30 45 minutes to attend a game. In conducting that research, the marketing director for
one of the other clubs mentioned that they determine pricing versus the typical cost of other local
activities such as seeing a film or going bowling. Along with that, I would have liked to see the
restrictions and advantages for the baseball game versus those activities. For example, a baseball game
usually runs pretty long, roughly three hours, whereas bowling can be an activity at any given time.
Within the survey, creating a chart of four or five activities, including the baseball game, you could
ask the participant to rank them from highest to lowest on interest in attending/participating. ... Show

Digging Seamus Heaney Analysis
The poem Digging, is an explorative revelation into the identity of the poet, Seamus Heaney. The
poem reflects upon the author s journey to veer from but ultimately honor his rich family traditions.
The author s family, one of dedicated potato and turf diggers, pass on the ideals of commitment and
diligence through their work from generation to generation. Seamus Heaney, the first man in the past
three generations has chosen not to dig in such a way. Rather, Heaney trades the family spade in for an
ink pen. Through the symbolism of the poet s pen to record the memories of his father and
grandfather, Heaney proves that one s identity is not defined by heritage, but rather by interests and
strengths. The author first introduces his pen as symbolic of discovering his personal identity despite
the expectations of heritage when he says, Between my finger and my thumb/ The squat pen rests;
snug as a gun. (Heaney 1). This line is suggestive that the author did not chose his as a writer identity
for himself, rather it was destined for him. Heaney describes the pen as resting between his finger and
thumb rather than his hand holding the pen. This word choice gives a sense of greater power to the
pen rather than his hand. The pen in this case is symbolic of the notion that the author s passion and
strength in writing was destined for him in such a way that heritage and tradition could not sway the
course of his life. The author further solidifies that it is his destiny to embrace his identity as a writer
when he mentions, The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. (Heaney 1). The image of the gun being snug
resting in the author s hand is suggestive that the pen belongs in his hand, and fits well. The
symbolism of the pen being snug in the poet s hand is evocative of the author being content with his
decision to be a poet. The reader is comfortable with the idea of the pen being snug in the poet s hand
but the author immediately instills unease in the reader s mind when he says, snug as a gun, (Heaney
1). The poet utilizes this simile to contribute to the symbolism of the pen as the author s quest to verify
his identity. A gun is powerful, permanent, and commands attention. The author uses this simile to
justify

Larry Page Gary Vu Period 3 April 27, 2015 Larry Page Biography Larry Page was born in Lansing,
Michigan in 1973 to parents whom were both computer scientists. Both of Page s parents, Carl and

fully immersed himself into the world of computers. Because of his parent s influence, Larry knew at

Summary Of The Dangerous Myths Of Grade Inflation
When it comes to the issues of education and the many different opinions on how education should be
ran; the finger always seems to be pointed at the students. It is the students fault that grade inflation
exists. It is the students fault that there is a lack of effort in the classroom. Think about it though, are
the flaws that occur in education really our fault? Maybe, maybe not. It is important that everyone
(educators, students, parents, and administrators), understand both sides to what is really going on and
the issues occurring in the academe world. An ongoing issue in the classroom is the students lack of
effort. Both teachers and parents often complain about students being rather torpid. Is this really the
students fault? Is it even the teacher s fault? On the student s side, they do not want to be there. Us

grade inflation exists, there have been teachers and professors that have admitted to using grade

is to save the teacher s job, or so students continue to take their classes, or because they do not want to

The Many Ways Of Dealing With Life
As an individual, I have always seen the world somewhat differently than the average person in a
community such as mine. Those around me, as devout orthodox Jews, tend to view those different
than them as strange and odd often times even judging them negatively. Personally, I see this as a large
problem, since as much as we would like to separate ourselves from those different than us to avoid
negative influences, we do live in a society that includes a multitude of religions, cultures, and ways
of life. I believe wholeheartedly that each person can learn an immense amount from everyone they
come across, and by continuing our habit of blocking off most of society with negative words, we are
cutting ourselves off from a lifetime of growth and possibility. Yes, others may be different than us.
They may have different views, different beliefs, and different ways of dealing with life. But like us,
they are human with hopes, dreams, heartbreaks, desires, and passions. They each have a wealth of
knowledge and wisdom from the two year old boy to the ninety seven year old grandma. And in my
humble opinion, I strongly believe that respect should be given to everyone, no matter their race,
religion, or station in life. I must credit my father ZTL and my mother, who both raised me to see the
good in others and respect every human being I come across. They taught me that just because I had
my beliefs, did not mean I had a right to judge others for believing differently. The

  • 2. Islam And Western Imperialism In Islam Although the Islamic world has faced many challenges throughout history, Islam s encounter with Western imperialism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has had the greatest impact on contemporary Islam. These encounters with Western powers influenced and shaped the Muslim world by introducing Islam to modernity. The Islamic world s varied reaction to these challenges of modernity affects a wide range of issues in Islam today. To understand how the Muslim world reacted to Western influence, we must understand what they were reacting to. With the fall of the Ottoman Empire, European political ideas permeated the Middle East. Muslims were forced to respond to ideas of nationhood, nationalism, democracy, and sovereignty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Modernists claimed these institutions were not foreign to Islam and could coexist within an Islamic state. Rashid al Rida argued Islam was democratic and representative because Islamic leadership is determined through consensus of the community. According to Rida, an Islamic state requires Islamic legal systems, where the uluma are representatives of the people. Other Islamic modernists such as Muhammad Abduh and Muhammad Iqbal also attempted to balance Western ideologies with the Islamic faith. According to Abduh, reason and science were complementary to Islam. Iqbal also believed some Western ideas were compatible with Islam. Iqbal applied reasoning to help understand Islamic female inheritance laws. One interpretation of these laws is that a woman is worth half a man. Iqbal argued the share of female inheritance is not based on a woman s value, but rather on social context specific to a certain period. He claimed these laws applied to a time when women had less financial responsibility than men. This type of logic and reasoning still exists in contemporary Pakistani law. Both Abduh and Iqbal believed certain aspects of Western influence could be applied to Islamic society, as long as those ideas did not contradict Islam. Other movements within Islam have directly challenged the Islamic modernists ideas on Western influence. Unlike Islamic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Informative Speech On Water Speech Paloma Water covers 70% of our planet, and it is easy to think that it will always be plentiful. However, freshwater, what we drink, bathe in, irrigate our farm fields with makes up only 3% of the world s water, and two thirds of that is stored in frozen glaciers or unavailable for our use. Many of the water systems that keep ecosystems thriving and feed a growing human population have become stressed. Rivers, lakes and aquifers are drying up or becoming too polluted to use. Already, 80 countries suffer from water shortages that threaten health and economies while 40 percent of the world more than 2 billion people does not have access to clean water or sanitation We usually associate water shortages with a lack of drinking water, but global water scarcity has a critical impact on food security. Agriculture consumes more water than any other source. Climate change is altering patterns of weather around the world, causing shortages and droughts in some areas and floods in others. Water is key to food security. Crops and livestock need water to grow. Agriculture requires large quantities of water for irrigation and various production processes. Water scarcity may limit food production and supply, putting pressure on food prices and increasing countries dependence on food imports Less water means farming and other crops that need water to grow have lower yield. Water is needed to ensure food security, to feed livestock, and to conserve the biodiversity and environment. Australia With the growing population of the world, demand for food is increasing. This means that Australian farmers are struggling to provide enough food for the global market, and clean water for irrigation is as important as ever. In Australia, agriculture is the largest consumer of water, representing around 70% of our total annual water consumption. Australia is a major exporter of food, particularly wheat and beef, to the rest of the world. In 2009, 60% of Australia s agricultural produce was exported overseas. Overall meat production is expected to double by 2050, meaning that even more pressure will be put on the Australian meat industry. Recent droughts have meant that less water has been allocated to irrigating crops, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Sympathy In Antigone Lauren Rostkowski 12B0 Dr. Bushey 31 October 2016 Sympathy for Strong Character Often in a work of literature, an author will create a set of characters whose purpose is to contrast their defining qualities. The purpose of this technique is to highlight the composure of a well constructed individual and emphasize how these characteristics can lead to the discovery of the good life. The author may also call attention to a character s persona by fabricating scenarios in which he or she is faced with an obstacle that forces them to question their own values and the values of those surrounding them. Throughout the play, Antigone, by Sophocles, the titular character is faced with an obstacle which threatens her relationship with her uncle, King ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His stubborn reign and obsession with power inevitably leads to the death of Antigone, his son, and beloved queen. In his position as king, he denies the power of the gods and believes that his decisions are infallible. This is most evident when Kreon s son, Haimon, attempts to open the mind of his headstrong and irrational father (Sophocles 645 668). When he suggests that the opinions of Antigone and the entirety of Thebes must be taken into consideration, Kreon states that he has caught Antigone disobeying openly and he shall not falsify himslef before the city. He ll kill her while she sings to Zeus of blood kinship (Sophocles 655 658). Through this argument with his son, Kreon reveals yet another faulty element to his character. Not only does he discount the ideals of the people he rules, but also the practices of the gods. During that time period, a love for kin and the honor for a proper burial was crucial to religion (Sophocles 645 668). The rejection of this critical aspect diminished all possible reasons for condolence, and placed Antigone on a pedestal for her restless desire to praise the gods and her ... • 5. Gender Bias In The Workplace Sexism women still face gender bias in the workplace. The stereotype e.g. women more likely to take a housekeeping job, secretarial tasks or even be look at taking notes at a college meeting. Ageism it s been known that because of a person age, he/she been discriminated against for job advancement. Race refers to the practice of treating people differently because of the race. I have personally heard on my past job that the manager is looking to hire a Caucasian person, yes this still exists in toady time. Discrimination will always be a around it will take a miracle for this to come to an end not only within the workplace. Problems The problem with feminist theory is gender free morality may be impossible. In today era, many people don t agree that women should have equal pay as men within the work place. Even though laws have been passed to equal pay, however when it comes to equal pay a lot of company still don t comply with this ruling. Model The feminist model is described as conflict resolution. Feminist model aims to resolve inequality on multiple levels of existence. In addition, feminist model of conflict determination identifies sources of conflict as results of oppression prolonged by dominant. e.g. if a male and a female walk over to the automotive service department to get their car work on, and the worker come out and automatic address the male with the question, how may I help you , the worker is looking at the male as the dominant person. ... One of the men who is most dramatically affected from this change is Mr. Kurtz. This relates to what Pauline Hopkins once said in Contending Forces, And, after all, our surroundings influence our lives and characters as much as fate, destiny or any supernatural agency. Mr. Kurtz goes from a man with a loving fiance and great attributes to man with no morals and the need for power. Mr. Kurtz was once a man with morals, but once he because a victim of the overwhelming power he had in the jungle, he abandoned the person he once was. He originally believed he could bring light to the Congo, which was shown with his painting of the woman, Then I noticed a small sketch in oils... representing a woman, draped and blindfolded, carrying a lighted torch. The background was somber almost black. 21 22 This shows how he uses the torch to show how Kurtz is trying to bring light into the the jungle where only darkness is found. Democracy And Its Lack Of Democracy Throughout Plato s Republic in Book VIII, readers are caught up in the conversation about four unjust structures that each structure will succeed the other as society decays. The four unjust structures are explained throughout dialogue and described as timocracy, oligarchy, democracy, and tyranny. Most shocking critique throughout the discussion is about democracy and its ineffectiveness to rule. Plato s disagreement of democracy does not involve of what we are acquainted with today, but rather the idea of democracy. Plato explores the central strain of the government that is acknowledged with liberty and fairness. Also, this form of government known for its embracement of freedom and equality. Plato s description and disagreement about democracy is correct because the consequences of such government is that it leads the population to pursue unnecessary desires. Three great Athenian tragic poets Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides addressed to the myth about the killing of Clytemnestra by Orestes. Sophocles s Electra is one of the interpretations of this legend. Although the avenging one is Orestes, Sophocles brings Electra to the fore because of her endless hatred and the will to take her revenge against her father s murderers. Before utilizing mathematical resources, I decided to approach my problem from scratch and just experiment with numbers on a lazy Sunday morning. Soon enough, I realized that the primes 2 and 5 do not produce any recurring decimals. 3 only provides one repeating digit, and yet 9 does too. The number 7 produces 6 repeating digits, but the number 11 only produces two digits. What is going on here? Well, it appears that some primes p have p 1 repeating digits, but not all of them. However, all primes except 2 and 5 seem to have a period that is (p 1)/n long, where n is some integer. What about the squares of primes? I would like to give the example of 3; although 9 (3x3) has the same number of repeating digits as 3 (1), 27 actually has three repeating digits. Even more stunning, 81 (3^4) has nine repeating digits. It appears as if as the number is raised by a power of 3, then the number of repeating digits is also raised to some power. The number 3 is actually an exception to the general rule that I will mention, and the repeating digits of 3 to the nth power is just 3^(n 2). While this definition addresses some of the most basic ideas associated with Cyberfeminism, it is not actually a theory with a universally accepted definition, but rather centers on a number of central ideas and practices. However, it is generally accepted that the preliminary concepts of cyberfeminism, namely the idea of a cyborg, were presented by Donna Haraway in her 1984 piece A Cyborg Manifesto. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The goal of adopting the cyborg figure is to lessen such power, in order to create a society in which those with partial or contradictory identities may embrace those identities proudly, without fear of policing or invisibility (295). One tactic recommended in this Manifesto, and later echoed in various Cyberfeminist works, is irony. Irony, according to Haraway, is so effective because it draws attention to pieces that do not fit neatly into a larger whole, as well as the tensions that arise from holding incompatible things together because all are necessary and true (291). In fact, it s these tensions themselves, the consequences of hardships of living a hybrid life that become the focus of some later Cyberfeminist works, such as the struggle between the physical and the non physical, or between the physical body and an online persona. What remains central, however, is Haraway s insistence that such an examination of tension, or benefit, never become totalizing. One cannot rely on essential unity (295) to define or understand something, especially something as complex as a board crossing, boundary dissolving cyborg. Jack London, writing in December 1908, was responding to an inquiry from the Richard W. Gilder, editor of Century Magazine. Gilder, having just published To Build a Fire in his magazine, was worried when he came across another version published 6 years earlier. London s explanation was that the first story was for boys and the new one was for men; the only similarity being the motif itself. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This ending more clearly illustrates the dangers of the Klondike. The first version is more a morality tale, ending with the moral of Never travel alone! (62). The second version is more of a good short story, with the ending that is, regrettably, all too common in that part of the world. The main character never gets a chance to change his ways and travel with a companion the proverbial next time. He learns the lesson with the most severest of consequences: death. Another interesting difference is the fact that in the 1902 version the main character is Tom Vincent; however in the second version, the man has no name. This gives the main character in the 1908 version a feeling of universality. In 1900, before either of these two stories was published, Jack London wrote a letter to a good friend, Cloudesly Johns, explaining his philosophy on good fiction writing. This letter is an invaluable resource when studying the work of Jack London, especially when comparing the two versions of To Build a Fire. London emphasized quite a bit in this letter with many exclamation points and capital letters. That was only because of the passion with which he was writing about writing. His main point was to not be to scientific, or empirically (530) scientific. He explains not to tell the reader what your philosophy is, but rather to have the characters tell it by their deeds, actions, talk, etc. (531). He then moves on to talk about atmosphere, and ... • 29. Disinfectant Lab Report Our science experiment was to try and figure out which disinfectant was the most effective on killing bacteria. We chose seven different disinfectants and tested them on gram positive and gram negative bacteria to see which would have the largest zone of inhibition after 23 hours in an incubator at 28 degrees. This experiment taught me a lot of useful things for the future such as what the most effective way of cleaning is. We decided to do this project because we wanted to know if what people used to clean their houses was really doing the job. For our science experiment, we tested household disinfectants against gram positive, and gram negative bacteria. To begin with, one of the main differences between gram positive and gram negative bacteria is the structural differences in their cell walls. Gram negative has an inner membrane, a small layer of peptidoglycan (which is a substance that forms in most bacteria that acts as a back bone to the cell wall giving it strength), then another membrane and the cell wall. The peptidoglycan is sandwiched between two lipid (fat) layers. Gram positive bacteria have just peptidoglycan but they have a lot of it making them stronger. Secondly, the gram in gram positive and gram negative refers to how a bacterium reacts to a gram stain. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My first point is that without the use of disinfectants, there would be germs absolutely everywhere. From doorknobs to table counters, germs and endless bacteria would take over. Next, with all of these germs out in the air and on all surfaces, infection and sickness would spread like wildfire. Even though there are medication to cure infection and disease, we would need great amounts to help many people. In conclusion, we would all be inevitably doomed. Infection and disease would eventually take over without disinfectants leaving nothing. The use of disinfectants is extremely important because without it everyone would be very ... Examples Of Alienation In Catcher In The Rye Alienation outcasts: The reason why the characters we ve read about feel victimized by society is because of their differences, they believe that people aren t real/truthful with them and they retaliate by being aggressive. One example of this would be Holden from Catcher in the rye. When his roommate Ackley asked him if he knew who won the fencing match Holden responded with I don t know and I don t give a damn. How bout sitting down or something, Ackley kid? Holden acted very rude when his roommate asked him simple question. No doubt, there are some Christians who rely solely on the secular media for news and information. Those individuals may actually be unaware of the extreme suffering endured by Christians across the globe. But how many simply look the other way to avoid the inconvenient truth of persecution? Still, others just don t care about issues that do not directly affect them. Let us consider the example set by Yeshua (Jesus) as we approach the International Days of Prayer. Her success from the novel did not come so easily. Lee finally met with a publisher and editor, Tay Hohoff, in New York after receiving a number of rejection letters in 1957. While living in New York, Harper Lee s lifelong friends, the Brown s, had faith in her success and presented her with enough money to take a year off from work to write a literary phenomenon called To Kill a Mockingbird. • 34. Baseball Game Vs Bowling Case Study Evaluating Survey The best part of the survey creation and distribution was the evaluation of other minor league teams across the northeastern part of the United States. There should have been much more focus on that and utilization of experienced sources from those clubs. Springfield is not in a competition with other baseball markets for fan bases as most of the attendance for the Nor easters probably won t travel further than 30 45 minutes to attend a game. In conducting that research, the marketing director for one of the other clubs mentioned that they determine pricing versus the typical cost of other local activities such as seeing a film or going bowling. Along with that, I would have liked to see the restrictions and advantages for the baseball game versus those activities. For example, a baseball game usually runs pretty long, roughly three hours, whereas bowling can be an activity at any given time. Within the survey, creating a chart of four or five activities, including the baseball game, you could ask the participant to rank them from highest to lowest on interest in attending/participating. ... • 36. Digging Seamus Heaney Analysis The poem Digging, is an explorative revelation into the identity of the poet, Seamus Heaney. The poem reflects upon the author s journey to veer from but ultimately honor his rich family traditions. The author s family, one of dedicated potato and turf diggers, pass on the ideals of commitment and diligence through their work from generation to generation. Seamus Heaney, the first man in the past three generations has chosen not to dig in such a way. Rather, Heaney trades the family spade in for an ink pen. Through the symbolism of the poet s pen to record the memories of his father and grandfather, Heaney proves that one s identity is not defined by heritage, but rather by interests and strengths. The author first introduces his pen as symbolic of discovering his personal identity despite the expectations of heritage when he says, Between my finger and my thumb/ The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. (Heaney 1). This line is suggestive that the author did not chose his as a writer identity for himself, rather it was destined for him. Heaney describes the pen as resting between his finger and thumb rather than his hand holding the pen. This word choice gives a sense of greater power to the pen rather than his hand. The pen in this case is symbolic of the notion that the author s passion and strength in writing was destined for him in such a way that heritage and tradition could not sway the course of his life. The author further solidifies that it is his destiny to embrace his identity as a writer when he mentions, The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. (Heaney 1). The image of the gun being snug resting in the author s hand is suggestive that the pen belongs in his hand, and fits well. The symbolism of the pen being snug in the poet s hand is evocative of the author being content with his decision to be a poet. The reader is comfortable with the idea of the pen being snug in the poet s hand but the author immediately instills unease in the reader s mind when he says, snug as a gun, (Heaney 1). The poet utilizes this simile to contribute to the symbolism of the pen as the author s quest to verify his identity. A gun is powerful, permanent, and commands attention. The author uses this simile to justify ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both of Page s parents, Carl and Gloria Page, taught computer programming at the University of Michigan. At the age of six, Larry began his interactions with computers and computer parts that lay around him from his parents, and fully immersed himself into the world of computers. Because of his parent s influence, Larry knew at the age of 12 that he was going to be successful one day, so decided to pursue a bachelor s degree in computer engineering from his local university, none other than the University of Michigan where his parents taught computer engineering and artificial intelligence. After accomplishing his goal of achieving a bachelor s degree, he set his goals even higher and pursued a master s degree in computer science at Stanford University. Around this time, the World Wide Web and the birth of the Internet had just been released and is still brand new, and this is the factor that helps Larry push to become the entrepreneur he is today. After a little tinkering with the internet, he realized that people could use a search engine, as everything on the internet was scattered everywhere, and an engine that can search the internet according to what s relevant could really pioneer the future. Summary Of The Dangerous Myths Of Grade Inflation When it comes to the issues of education and the many different opinions on how education should be ran; the finger always seems to be pointed at the students. It is the students fault that grade inflation exists. It is the students fault that there is a lack of effort in the classroom. Think about it though, are the flaws that occur in education really our fault? Maybe, maybe not. It is important that everyone (educators, students, parents, and administrators), understand both sides to what is really going on and the issues occurring in the academe world. An ongoing issue in the classroom is the students lack of effort. Both teachers and parents often complain about students being rather torpid. Is this really the students fault? Does grade inflation actually exist? In the reading The Dangerous Myths of Grade Inflation by Alfie Kohn, he gives plenty examples as to why grade inflation does not exist, Kohn also backs up his examples with studies that have shown that there is no way to prove grade inflation exists. However, even where grades are higher now as compared with then, that does not constitute proof that they are inflate, this was stated in Alfie Kohn s reading. Although studies have there there is not a way to prove grade inflation exists, there have been teachers and professors that have admitted to using grade inflation. In class we watched a video called Declining By Degrees: Higher Education at Risk that interviewed college professors that admitted to participating in grade inflation. The reason behind this, is to save the teacher s job, or so students continue to take their classes, or because they do not want to be known as a mean teacher. • 39. The Many Ways Of Dealing With Life As an individual, I have always seen the world somewhat differently than the average person in a community such as mine. Those around me, as devout orthodox Jews, tend to view those different than them as strange and odd often times even judging them negatively. Personally, I see this as a large problem, since as much as we would like to separate ourselves from those different than us to avoid negative influences, we do live in a society that includes a multitude of religions, cultures, and ways of life. I believe wholeheartedly that each person can learn an immense amount from everyone they come across, and by continuing our habit of blocking off most of society with negative words, we are cutting ourselves off from a lifetime of growth and possibility. Yes, others may be different than us. They may have different views, different beliefs, and different ways of dealing with life. But like us, they are human with hopes, dreams, heartbreaks, desires, and passions. They each have a wealth of knowledge and wisdom from the two year old boy to the ninety seven year old grandma. And in my humble opinion, I strongly believe that respect should be given to everyone, no matter their race, religion, or station in life. I must credit my father ZTL and my mother, who both raised me to see the good in others and respect every human being I come across. They taught me that just because I had my beliefs, did not mean I had a right to judge others for believing differently. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
