2. The Legal Battles Of Tobacco Companies
For years on end, smokers, their families, and even certain government entities have filed suit
against tobacco companies. The most recent litigation to date, is one of Cynthia Robinson against
big time repeat player, RJ Reynolds. The case is one of thousands filed in Florida after a tossed
out $145 billion class action verdict, by the State Supreme Court in 2006. To summarize, the
verdict stated that amount awarded by a Miami jury to smokers was excessive. However, the court
did affirm the jury s conclusions that tobaccocompanies misrepresent the addictive nature and
health hazards involved with the usage of cigarettes (Gersten). This case opened the door for ill
smokers and their families to use these findings as the stones in a sling... Show more content on

Product liability the tobacco companies made and marketed a product that was unfit to use.
Negligent advertising the tobacco companies failed to warn consumers of the risks of smoking
cigarettes. Fraud, and [the] violation of state consumer protection statutes . The defendant tobacco
companies came out victorious in these original cases. This is partly due to their inability to
successfully link tobacco use with the development of cancer. With this, tobacco companies were
able to cling to the hypothesis that many factors contributed to cancer, and smoking could not be
considered the only cause. Due to this contention, tobacco companies could fall behind the excuse
that with a lack of information, they were unable to know about the potential health risks of
smoking and therefore could not research them and effectively warn the plaintiff consumers. There
were many cases during the first wave of litigation. One of the most prominent, was the case of
Lartigue v. R. J. Reynolds. The tobacco company formed their argument by stating that there could
be no causal link between the plaintiffs usage of their product, and cancer. The plaintiff based her
claims on the breach of warranty and negligence. Her complaint alleged that the consumption of the
defendants product was the cause of her late husbands death. The case lasted several weeks, and
ended with a short

3. Literary Techniques Used In Eudora Welty s A Worn Path
Today we will be talking about the different literary references used throughout Eudora Welty s A
Worn Path . I will explain and decode different techniques used by the author throughout her story.
The story is of an old southern African American woman, named Phoenix Jackson, making her way
into to town to pick up her grandsons medication from the doctor s office. But this is no normal old
woman. She cannot see and is picking her way with a cane to make her way across a barrage of
obstacles. Throughout her journey she comes upon different characters and situations, from these
events we will draw our interpretations of the symbolism embedded within the tale. The first thing I
thought about after finishing the story was how routine... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When she arrives at the doctors office she is greeted first by a grumpy front desk receptionist,
then a nice nurse who is familiar when Phoenix approaches her. The nice nurse assures the front
desk receptionist that Phoenix is there to pick up her grandsons medication. As she and the
nurse chat, Phoenix s old age starts to play a factor when she loses her train of thought while the
nurse asks on the condition of the grandson. As phoenix walks into town, she asks a random
woman on the street to tie her shoe. Thank you missy. I doesn t mind asking a nice lady to tie my
shoe when I gets on the street , (A Worn Path, 1280) this could be a continuation of the
representation of the child old woman analogy that I described earlier in the essay. As she finds
her way into town, she finds her way to the doctor s office, she then makes a conversation with
the nurse and tells her, We is the only two left in the world. He suffers and it don t seem to put
him back at all. He got a sweet look. He going to last. He wear a little patch quilt and peep out
holding his mouth open like a little bird. I remember so plain now. I not going to forget him
again, no, the whole enduring time. I could tell him from all the others to creation (A Worn Path,
1280). I saw this as a representation of how she felt alone in the world, and how she is going to

Motorola should look into the expansion of its manufacturing plant in Tianjin which is one of the
major global production bases in the world for personal communication products including the cell
phones. This may help Motorola improve the relationships with the Chinese Government. Motorola
should continue to expand the relationships and contracts with China Mobile, Cisco, and Nortel

ventures will allow Motorola to focus on its expertise in developing and distributing cell phone

7. The Culture of Today and the Dionysian Society Essays
Foreseeing the future, pain, drugs and alcohol. It all sounds like elements in the plot of a
Hollywood movie. These elements, however, are not of a movie, but of the past of a society. The
Pueblos of New Mexico , an essay written by Ruth Benedict talks of these different societies.
Dionysian, derived from the Greek god of wine Dionysus, perceives values through the annihilation
of the ordinary bounds and limits of existence (517). The Dionysian culture holds values that
approve recklessness, glorification, states of emotional excess, and a general passion to break
through the usual routine of everyday life. This society is one that has very similar characteristics
to the societies of today. The frequent use of drugs and alcohol,... Show more content on

They valued all violent experience, all means by which human beings may break through the
usual sensory routine, and to all such experiences they attributed the highest value (518).
Dionysian cultures did many horrifying things to themselves. Cutting strips of skin off of their
arms, cutting fingers off and going without food and water for days were some of the things that
the people of the Dionysian cultures did. Today, violence is a major part of one society s
existence. Gangs today rely very highly on violence for survival. Not only do they hurt the people
outside of their gang, but they also hurt those inside of it. In order to be initiated into the gang,
one would have to suffer through the torturous beatings of his fellow gang members. ...if he was
seeking his vision by torture...someone had to go out with him to tie him to the pole from which
he was to swing... his helper did his part and left him alone for his ordeal. This resembles the
rituals of the gangs. The gang members recruit the new members in, and lead him before the rest
of the gang, and then leave him alone for his ordeal. Drugs and alcohol are a huge part in the
lifestyles of the Dionysians. The experiences that they wanted were ...often sought openly by means
of drugs and alcohol. (521) Many times, the Dionysian cultures used mind altering substances in

8. Comparison Of Betrayal In Fahrenheit 451
In class, we read this book called Fahrenheit 451. In this book, there is a character named Guy
Montag. He is a fireman, but, in this universe, they burn down houses instead of saving them from
fire. He goes on with his life like normal until he meets a girl named Clarrise who changes
everything he once thought. We also watched a movie called The Truman Show. This movie is
about a guy named Truman Burbank who lives in a normal world where everything is the same.
Then he starts learning more about this perfect world and begins to become curious. I find that both
of these characters are the same because they both get betrayed, they go with the flow, and act
irrationally throughout their stories. The first reason I find both Guy Montagand Truman Burbank
alike is the fact that they both get betrayed. In Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury, Montag s house gets
called in to be burned down because he had books. When he asked who turned in the call, he
learns that his own wife, Mildred, was the one who called. Mildred was too frightened by these
books to care about her own home being burned to ashes. She betrayed Montag, leaving him with
nothing. In The Truman Show, Truman Burbank is betrayed on multiple occasions. Truman was
talking with his best friend, Marlon, about how he began to think that the world revolved around
him when Marlon said something along the lines of, I would never lie to you. Because they are
best friends, Truman believes his lie. Marlon is just an actor, so

10. Case Purpose A New Brand Positioning Strategy Of Omega
1.Propose a new brand positioning strategy for Omega. How does this new strategy take into
account the brand s current PODs POPs and existing customer brand knowledge? (25 points).
With regards to brand growth, the company absolutely needs to make strategic decisions to ensure
that Omega becomes the world s largest luxury watch. This would require substantial strategic
decisions to be made especially related to the Omega s product families and its associated
communication strategies. The following are the recommendations or the new branding strategies:
I.One of the primary change in strategies would require pruning Omega s product lines to make it
more coherent and to eliminate any potential intra firm competition. Typically, the lower end
models need to be pruned so that it could be positioned as a more effective Luxurious Brand to
compete directly against other Luxury Brand watches. The prevention of any overlapping with sub
brands will ensure that there is no potential risk to the dilution of brand image as well as reduce
the risk of cannibalization of the current product lines. This will also help in uplifting the overall
brand image of the Omega brand by withdrawing a number of Omega s low priced models thereby
boosting the band profitability which will ensure that there is enough opportunity for the
improvement on brand margins a key factor in reducing the price differences with Rolex. Another
underlying argument is that this process will enable the exclusivity

11. Relationship Between God And Adam
The bible remains a mystery to many people in society today. Therefore, the relationship between
God and Adam can be said to be a very complex relationship. Genesis shows us many examples of
God s interaction with Adam, apparently there is so much more about God s disappointment and
righteous anger in the garden. The world of Christianity fails to see there s so much more to the
story about Godand Adam, I think many of us do the same. He was the first man, the father of
mankind, however, Genesis does not fill in the missing background information as to the
reasons why man and woman came to be the first rational, mortal creations of God s divinity.
Moreover, most believers in the Bible do not know the specific similarities and differences
regarding the two humans characteristics, and how their relationship impact each other as well as
all other living creatures in the garden. We see the wrath, but we miss the grace. The bible does
not tell if Adam was Baptized and upon his death he went to heaven, however many of religious
leaders tried to read and to the relationship between god and Adam, without facts to back it up. Non
statement should not be used to formulate doctrine. A conclusion cannot be drawn from something
that God did not say. If Adam had been faithful, God may have had any number of plans for Adam,
none of which are touched upon in Genesis. If all other aspects of earthly creation tend to decay
and death it makes as much sense to conclude that human s

12. Classical Conditioning Vs. Operant Conditioning Essay
1.
a) Define Classical Conditioning and Behaviorism. b) Identify the two major characteristics that
distinguish classical conditioning from operant conditioning.
Classical Conditioning is a type of learning process of an individual when they come in contact
with certain stimuli. According to Pavlov, a Russian psychologist, he developed several
experiments on learning and he discovered that classical condition is the basic form of learning for
an individual. However, according to Pavlov, behaviorism is the view that psychology should be the
main objective science that studies behavior without including mental processes of an individual in
the investigation. Behaviorism is more about the person s behavior and how they were influenced
to act a certain why, including their surroundings. Thus, from this learning process many
behaviorist believes that the basic laws of learning are similar for all different species, including
humans. Furthermore, the two major characteristics that distinguish classical conditioning from
operant conditioning is that in classical conditioning, an unconditioned response is an event that
happens naturally in response to some stimuli such as salivation. Another characteristic is an
unconditioned stimuli, which is a process where an individual naturally discovers something
without learning the process and reacts to the unlearned response, For instance, when someone put
food in there mouth this causes salivation. A conditioned stimuli in classical

are definitely many diseases today that are killing millions of people, but these same diseases that
exist have done the opposite for our ancestors. Many of these diseases such as diabetes, and
hemochromatosis that we consider deadly provide us a follow up question: Why was this disease

Essentially, iron is what allows almost every form of life to metabolize and function. In fact, our
bodies body has several mechanisms that prevent access to iron to pathogens and other
infectious bacteria thrive on iron that may harm our bodies known as the acute phase response.
The author describes this as he states the bloodstream is flooded with illness fighting proteins,
and, at the same time, iron is locked away to prevent biological invaders from using it against us
(7). So us readers can take away the idea that iron is crucial for our bodies. So how could
potentially accumulating too much iron affect our health? That s when hemochromatosis comes
along. Our bodies assumes that the person is lacking iron in their system so they continually
absorb the iron in the intestine. Not only that, don t forget that bacteria and diseases also rely on
iron to grow and accumulate. This can cause cancer cells to grow and spread continuously without
stopping if it consumes our iron. Some of the symptoms of hemochromatosis are shown as the
author observes from Aran Gordon, a natural long distance runner. From the book Moalem
describes it as He was tired all the time. His joints hurt. His heart seemed to skip a funny beat. He
told his running partner he wasn t sure he could go on with training, with running at all (1). He was

The suddenly stop in blood flow to the brain from strokes can result in varying degrees of
damage to the brain as seen a patient Ellen. Post stroke, Ellen ate only from the right side of her
plate and will only dress and put makeup her right side. She completely neglects her left side of
her body and external world. This condition is a common neurological syndrome called hemi
neglect seen in post right brainstroke patients like Ellen, especially affecting the right parietal lobe.
These patients often manifest sets of odd behaviors. They report not seeing anything on their left
side, but are not blind and can receive visual input from both eyes. Sometimes they even notice
things in their neglected side when their attention is drawn to it. What is peculiar about a neglect
patient is that he was unconsciously recognizing differences in the images, yet verbalized the
images were the same. He was given 2 pictures of the houses: one on fire in the left side and the
other was intact. He said they were identical, but when forced to choose, he picked the intact
house over the one on fire. Another patient would roll her wheel chair in huge circles to the right
to see the neglected side rather than simply turning left. These patients somehow can not register
in their brain that the left side of the world indeed exists. Doctors realized this and figured out if
they somehow allow the patients to see the reflected left side from the right eye; perhaps this
problem can be corrected.

Obesity among Americans has been a growing issue in the United States predominantly over the

on fast food chains and restaurants. Throughout my research I have come to find a lot of facts and
statistics about fast food consumption causing obesity. Statistics show that without a doubt the

Obesity is a serious health concern and should not be ignored. According to Sassi Obesity and
the chronic diseases associated with it are killers, with severely obese people dying eight to ten
years earlier than their peers . This means leaving ones family, friends and loved ones up to eight

21. Testing Conditioning Methods Through Sniffy Simulation
Testing Conditioning Methods through Sniffy Simulation
Amir Ayoub
Fordham University
Abstract
This lab tests different forms of conditioning on a virtual rat named Sniffy. In this experiment we
began with the virtual rat completely unconditioned and then worked towards getting Sniffy to
pull the lever and get food on his own. We went through many steps to complete this task starting
with getting Sniffy to notice the food chamber, the lever, and finally having Sniffy realize he can
obtain food whenever he wanted by pressing the lever. Then, pushing it further, we made him
press the level two, three, four and then five times to receive one pellet. All of these steps tested
the idea that receiving the food as a reward will allow Sniffy to realize the benefits of learning and
conditioning himself to do things that have a positive outcome more.
Testing Conditioning Methods through Sniffy Simulation
This lab is focused on the ideas of classical and operant conditioning. Classical conditioning is when
a neutral stimulus is paired with an unconditioned stimulus to elicit an unconditioned response. In
time this turns the neutral stimulus into a conditioned stimulus that causes a conditioned response.
Operant conditioning is a method of learning that occurs through reinforcements and punishments
for behavior and encourages associating desirable or undesirable outcomes with certain behaviors.

and to promote stability and prosperity both in our region and beyond, by providing different types
of assistance and financial support. Although Australiareceives a number of benefits due to aid,
several disadvantages can also arise as a result of this link with different countries.
Providing aid to developing countries in the Asia Pacific region allows the countries to develop
politically and economically, helping the region prosper, and therefore improve Australia s personal
security. The aid provided by Australia helps developing countries to stabilise their situation...

Therefore, the recipient countries over reliance on Australian aid money places a strain on the
Australian economy, as well as the risk of witnessing a downfall of a nearby nation, which could
result in the endangerment of Australia s national security.
An additional advantage of aid is that it provides Australia with strengthened diplomatic, economic
and political ties to the recipient countries. As Australia is a prominent aid donor in the Asia Pacific
region, it has strong diplomatic ties with the developing countries of that area, and can therefore
receive the benefits from such a relationship with these countries. An example of such a relationship
would be the free trade agreements Australia signed with Singapore in 2003 and Thailand in 2005,
Australia diplomatic relationship with these nations played a large role in the securing of these two
agreements. Australia can also benefit from such a good relationship politically as the recipient
country of Australian aid can support Australia s politics. A strong relationship with a recipient
nation would also allow Australia to form economic bonds with the developing country, such as the
agreement of tied aid money were the recipient must spend some of the aid money provided by
Australia on Australia s goods and services, therefore strengthening Australia s economy. Hence,
creating and maintaining strong relationships with recipient nations of Australian aid is advantages

NOTES FOR THE TEACHER
CHAPTER 3 : MONEY AND CREDIT
Money is a fascinating subject and full of curiosities. It is important to capture this element for the
students. The history of money and how various forms were used at different times is an interesting
story. At this stage the purpose is to allow students to realise the social situation in which these
forms were used. Modern forms of money are linked to the banking system. This is the central idea
of the first part of the chapter. The present situation in India, where newer forms of money are
slowly spreading with computerisation of the banking system, offers many opportunities to students
to explore on their own. We need not get into a formal discussion of the functions of money but ...

What a person desires to sell is exactly what the other wishes to buy. In a barter system where
goods are directly exchanged without the use of money, double coincidence of wants is an
essential feature. In contrast, in an economy where money is in use, money by providing the
crucial intermediate step eliminates the need for double coincidence of wants. It is no longer
necessary for the shoe manufacturer to look for a farmer who will buy his shoes and at the same

he can purchase wheat or any other commodity in the market. Since money acts as an intermediate
in the exchange process, it is called a medium of exchange.
LET S WORK THESE OUT
1. How does the use of money make it easier to exchange things? 2. Can you think of some
examples of goods / services being exchanged or wages being paid through barter?
MODERN FORMS OF MONEY
We have seen that money is something that can act as a medium of exchange in transactions.
Before the introduction of coins, a variety of objects was used as money. For example, since the
very early ages, Indians used grains and cattle as money. Thereafter came the use of metallic coins

Not every report, memo, e mail or plan is a secret; however, there are some kinds of business
information that we cannot share with anyone outside of our company sometimes not even with
other employees outside of a small team. Any information that we must protect is referred to as
proprietary business information or confidential information. We continually gather, store, retrieve,
and analyze a large volume of information that we use for many purposes. Requests for information
arrive from many sources both within the company and from outside the company via e mail,
telephone inquiries, surveys, during meetings with customers and vendors. We share some
information in the course of conducting business, while other information is closely guarded. This
is true whether the information was gathered from customers, vendors and partners, or if it was
generated within the company, as plans, designs and reports. Although it is essential to be able
have ready access to information and to share it when necessary, we must take steps to ensure that
we protect confidential information because: It is good business. It is the right thing to do. It is
required by law. Failure to properly secure and protect confidential business information can result
in a loss of business or clients: Disclosing confidential business information that provides an
economic benefit or competitive advantage may result in a financial loss. Disclosing sensitive

The Scarlet Ibis Analysis Theme Essay The story by James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis , creates a theme
that is identified in many parts of the story. From the beginning to the end, it can be proposed that
character, irony, symbolism are the main supporting elements for the theme. In The Scarlet Ibis
James Hurstuses character, irony, and symbolism to reveal his theme: Conflict between love and
pride. To elaborate, the author creates a great description on how character helps with the
overall theme. The story is set in Eastern North Carolina the early 1900s, and it explains on how
the character Doodle s brother feels about his sibling. It was said in the story that Doodle s
brother disliked having his brother with him because he was ashamed of having someone that
could not walk or swim with him. In addition, it could be seen that even from the beginning of the

like the bird, Doodle was out of place because he was different from everyone else, he was
fragile. Also, when Doodle had died, his brother stands by his brother and cries about his death.
He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a

30. Albert Einstein Contribution
In the early 1930s after WW1, the Nazis were becoming stronger and more well known due to
violent propaganda. They were influencing scientists to label Einstein s work as Jewish physics.
Jews were not allowed to work official jobs, or university work, and Einstein was targeted to be
killed. Albert Einstein was a German theoretical physicist who accomplished much in his life.
He developed the general theories of relativity, the equation E = MC2, and won the Nobel Prize
for Physics for his research on the photoelectric effect. These are just some of the things that
Einstein did that made him the most influential scientist of the 1900s. In this report, I will explain
Einstein s life and accomplishments, and describe why I think he is a good role model. Einstein
was born on March 14th, 1879 in Ulm, Germany. He grew up in a Jewish family with his father,
Hermann Einstein, his mother, Pauline, and his sister, Maja. Einstein got married on January 6th,
1903 to Milena Maric, a fellow physics student. Due to Maric s ethnic background, Einstein s
parents tried to discourage the relationship, but they stayed together anyway, marrying the year
after Einstein s father died. The year the two got married, Einstein and Maric had a daughter, and
later had two sons. Einstein s marriage with Maric ended in 1919, but that same year, he married
his cousin, Elsa Lowenthal. However, Lowenthal died in 1936. When Einstein was in elementary

differed greatly depending on what social class the deceased were in. For example, in the higher
social classes the embalmer would first draw out the brains. This became standard around 1700
BC, the brain was deemed as insignificant in the afterlife. [Embalmers] left only the heart in place,

Lindsey Brown Professor Daren Dean English 2000 22 March 2013 You Cannot Ignore the
Importance of Social Media According to Dictionary.reference.com, activism is the policy or
action of using campaigning to bring about political or social change. A huge campaign that is
well known across the world, the Civil Rights Movement, was brought about by Martin Luther
King, Jr. King risked his life everyday to ensure justice and equality for the African American
race. Small Change by Malcolm Gladwell gives insight on how activism is more effective than

Another drawback is the potential to cause riots or outbreaks in a school, town, or even a
country. The countless amount of bullying that happens on social networks is evidence that if
social media participants are not careful about what they post on their social media pages and on
the Internet for public viewing, it can possibly trigger bias or prejudice judgments. Social
networking sites began to become popular in 2002 and although still in their youth, it has many
disadvantages that should not be overlooked. People should not have to be worried about what
they put on social networks because as Americans, we have freedom of speech. Thus it is
reasonable for people to be skeptical and oppose social media when runs the risk of being
counterproductive. No matter how much potential social media has for political or societal change
it is important to criticize its negative aspects. An article written by Andrea Moncada, begins her
argument with the question has social media had the same impact on advocacy. Similar to Gladwell
s points of view, Moncada states, social media can help get the word around, but participants must
be united by a core message and traditional methods... This source of uncertainty is the basis for its
support and is understandable. In addition to the fraudulent issue and the disadvantages it presents;

two kinds of carrageenan, lambda carrageenan (Viscarin GP 209) and iota carrageenan (Gelcarin
GP 379). They analyzed their respective compression capabilities through the use of a Strokes
single punch machine. Yield pressure was calculated at 81.3 Pa for iota carrageenan and 105.2
MPa for lambda carrageenan through the use of Heckel plots out of die tabletdensities. The results
proved linear. Both carrageenan types yielded near zero order profiles in drug release tablet
formulations. The tablet compression pressures had little to no effect on the profiles from 70 to
175 MPa. It was found out that while drug loading increased from 5% to 20%, the exponent of
diffusion decreased from 1.056 to 0.678. From zero order release, the breakup of tablets during
the dissolution and departure were the result of 30% drug loading. To predict the time for 50%
release as a function of the concentration of both types of carrageenan, the researchers used
multiple regression analysis, which was also used for microcrystalline cellulose, a third filler
material used in the setup. They concluded that the observed values and the predicted values of
the research were in good agreement and the R2 for the final cubic model was 0.9984. (Hariharan

Internal Validity
Internal Validity is the inexact truth about derivations with respect to cause impact or causal
connections. Along these lines, internal validity is just pertinent in studies that attempt to make a
causal relationship. It s not significant in most observational or descriptive studies. One of the
things that is most hard to handle about internal validity is that it is just important to the particular
study being referred to. That is, you can consider internal validity as a zero generalizability
concern. All that internal validity means is that you have confirmed that what you did in the study
created what you wanted to happen. It doesn t let you know whether what you accomplished for
the study was what you needed to do or whether what you happened was what you needed to
happen.

When I was twelve, my family of amateur chefs decided to adventure to Tlaxcala, Mexico, a town

The definition of strategic management continues to transform over time which coincides directly
with the unremitting modernization of business. Strategic management is understood as the
implementation of a strategy statement to establish competitive advantage and innovation within a

there are common themes that assist in understanding strategic management today. Effective
strategic management is implemented from top management; when management demonstrates a

Coca Cola has been atop the soft drink market since 1898 when it became a multinational

1899 Benjamin Thomas and John Whitehead launched a bottling franchise that created over 1,000
bottling machines within 20 years (Williams, Kevan, and Amason, 2010). Coca Cola continued to

Each of these developments was a direct result of strategic management. Coca Cola continued to

41. Directionality Of An Experiment Essay
The data collected during this experiment indicates that there is pattern between the rate of
regeneration and the directionality of the cuts. The average growth rate for the horizontal cuts was

horizontal cuts (.016026344) was much less than the vertical cut variance(.041749517) which
indicates that there is a larger range of average growth rate. The degrees of freedom for the T test
performed is 5 which stands for the number of variables involved in the experiment (n 1). A paired
two samples for mean T Test was used to compare the relationship between horizontal cuts and

This is one of the reasons directionality of the cuts is explored. This experiment is similar to the
experiment commented on by M. Kiang in the sense that he examines how when outside factors
are favorable then regeneration factors will properly align to cause perfect symmetry (Kiang,
474). Another aspect of this experiment is the idea that the directionality of the cuts could have
a deeper biological influence. For example, Amy Gavlik s research includes how a delay in the
regeneration of some planaria was due to the fact that necessary biological factors were not
present in the side that was regenerating and needed to be moved from the rest of the body
(Gavlik, 119). This is expanded upon in Alper s research when he suggests that once a wound or
amputation has occurred the biological factors necessary for regeneration are brought to that wound

43. The Origins Of The Origin Of Mathematics
The Origins of Mathematics
The Origins When and where is the origins of mathematics?
The origins of mathematics accompanied the evolution of social systems in many ways. The social
development of any society requires some sort of calculation and number system. In the same way,
the arithmetic operations are essential for the development and interaction between people. Words
that describe numbers and operations that enable calculations are the basis for survival. The need to
count how many animals where available for hunting, and the number of people that needed to be
feed are just examples of the needs faced by a pre historic man. All this require the need to
develop words, sounds, or gestures that could be used to describe the numbers of objects and
animals, also they had to develop a type of a counting system that could have allowed them to make
the most basic mathematical operations, for example equal sharing of food. That can explain why
the need of mathematics was so important just from the beginning of times, and how it has been the
binding element that kept the early humans together and help them to coexist and develop into
what we are today. Since the invention of a numbers and counting systems occurred when people
started to live together and formed the first human society, mathematical scenes was the link that
helped them to for societies and to develop a type of communication system and in a way help them
to establish the first trading system which in turn,

this parallel is shown overtly through the images, descriptions, and characterizations of the log
cabins in the story, and of Shiloh. Interestingly, the characters and the world they live in are stuck
on the surface, shown through how both Leroy and Norma Jean drift on subjects, and through the
names in the story.
Norma Jean and Leroy s marriage shows an insight on the theme in action because of how their
lack of understanding the inner workings of marriage, which causes them to drift apart and
eventually separate. One of the most important things in marriage is the ability to communicate,
but neither of them are able to do so on a meaningful level. An example of this is when Norma
Jean starts to explain why she wants to leave him, then as she walks away she takes back what she
said, adding No, it

45. Langston Hughes Essay
Langston Hughes was a large influence on the African American population of America. Some of
the ways he did this was how his poetry influenced Martin Luther King Jr. and the Harlem
Renaissance. These caused the civil rights movement that resulted in African Americans getting the
rights that they deserved in the United States. Hughes was born in 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. His
parents divorced when he was young and his grandmother raised him. She got him into literature
and education; she was one of the most important influences on him. He moved around a lot when
he was young, due to his parents divorce, but remained a good student and graduated high school.
After this he traveled the world and worked in different places, all the things he... Show more

All of these things, subject matter, themes, style, literary devices, and influences play into the way
that Hughes writes his poetry and they can all be seen in the poem Dream Variations . That is why
the poem is typical of Hughes writing.
The poem is very typical of Hughes subject matter and themes. This is because he usually writes
about racial subjects such as equality and the average life of an African American. Going so far as
to say that most of his poems are racial in theme and treatment, derived from the life that he knows (
An Introduction to Langston Hughes. ). This poem does have the racial topic of equality for a
couple of reasons. To begin with, the speaker talks about how people should see the world and
the other people in it. Key word, should, because he then goes onto say, That is my dream!
(Hughes l. 9). This is one reason why Dream Variations has a theme centered on how everyone
wants to be treated equally. Because the speaker talks about how he wishes he was treated by
the world. Along with the theme of equality the poem s subject is the life of an average African
American. This is because he speaks of how he wants to dance Dance! Whirl! Whirl! Till the
white day is done (Hughes ll. 12 13). Yet he cannot because he has to work, and he tries to make
his work seem like dancing but he is still very tired at the end of the day. This shows the average
life of an African American because they had to work very hard in the early

46. How Iphone Is The Size Of Its Screen
Over the course of three years, the most meaningful change to the iPhone has been the size of its
screen. A phone with a bigger screen was all the consumer really wanted and if Apple wasn t
willing to provide them with that then Samsung would. After years of sticking with a 3.5 inch
display and watching Android competitors slowly increase their screen size while also increasing
their sales, Apple finally gave in to the obvious trend with the larger 4.7 inch iPhone6 and huge 5.5
inch iPhone 6 Plus. However, as predicted, once Apple released their bigger screened iPhone 6
and 6 Plus, Samsung s sales began to decrease. Now that Apple has an iPhone with a big screen
and skyrocketing sales there appears to be no obvious reason to make it better, but just like every
year as technology changes and improves there is always a demand on Apple to release their
new upgraded phone, this year s version being the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Apple s tagline for
the iPhone 6S is the only thing that s changed is everything , stating that the brand knows the
phone bears a striking resemblance to its 2014 model despite the loads of changes made under
the cover (Beavis 1). The reason behind the similar appearance is due to it being an S year for the
iPhone, which means the basic physical design of the phone, has stayed the same while there has
been a substantial revision to the internals making them faster. S iPhones may lack the pizzazz of a
completely new design, but the iPhone 6S with its

47. Why Were The Crusades Dbq
November 27, 1095 Pope Urban ll called the people of France to help him begin a crusade to free
the Holy Land from the Muslims who had the audacity to control it. First Crusade was one of the
first attempts to capture the Holy Land which was successful. The First Crusade was a military
expedition undertaken by Christian the Holy Land from the Muslims.
But the main question is how and why were the Christian Crusaders motivated to fight in the war,
was is it to do with political reason such gaining money, power, papacy. Economical reasons, such
as bringing in back valuable resources from the Muslims or to raise social status or maybe was it
to do with Religious motivations because many only did to have a free ticket to heaven while

The many resources that was brought from the pilgrimages and from stealing from the Muslims in
the Holy Land must ve helped many poor family to be wealthier and maybe the crusades must ve
raised status positions.
Source 10 has a sentence that says You may know for certain, my beloved, that of gold, silver
and many other kinds of riches I now have twice as much as I had given to me when I left . This
source is trying to point out that obviously before when the crusaders (non wealthy) went to fight
they had nothing but when they come back from the crusade they came with twice as much as they
were given imagine how rich the peasant are now, they would probably no longer be peasants. And
Knights would also probably be no longer be just knight, they would more power than what they
had.
To what extent were the First Crusade Motivated by? Political, Economical or Religious gains.
The First Crusade was motivated by a lot of thing such as money, social status and power and
more . The First Crusade was actually a remarkable success. Some crusaders politically
accomplished what they went there for, many did it for money, and gold others did it for power.
The crusaders who economically fulfilled their mission received had thing such as valuable
resources and great number money. Money other crusaders selflessly did for the good of people,
while others did it for themselves to please God and

48. Research Paper On Communicative Language Teaching
Communicative Language Teaching
Communicative language teaching is an approach to develop communicative competence by
establishing real life situations. I want to explain the communicative competence. It is a
terminology introduced by Dell Hymes, which refers to the ability to use and interpret the language
appropriately and effectively according to where, whom, when and why you are talking to. The
writers explain the communicative language teaching differently in their articles from the others.
The articles in the ELT Journal offer interesting debates on CLT. On one side, Bax (2003) proposes
that CLT should be abandoned since the methodology fails to take into account the context of
language teaching. On the other side, Liao (2004) suggests ... Show more content on

Therefore the lesson may focus on a variety of linguistic forms to teach how to carry out a
function. The culture is daily life of the native speakers. Non verbal behavior the body language has
a significant role in teaching culture since it may change from culture to culture. Meaning is central
to learning the language. It should be conveyed through visual aids realia model sentences and
context. The students first language is very rarely used since the medium of instruction is in the
target language. The students need as much exposure to the target language as they can get in order
to become successful learners of that language. This is supported by considerable evidence both the
quantity and quality of target language input are crucial factors in foreign second language
learning.( Richards, Jack. 2002) Communicative language teaching can be said to have several
benefits and strong aspects for language teaching and learning. For one thing it established real life
social situations where the students have the chance to interact in the target language practicing the
meaning function relationship therefore the students can learn to speak the target language fluently
expressing their own thoughts and ideas more easily

50. Lensey Namioka s Use Of Figurative Language
Have you ever become embarrassed because you were different? The author Lensey Namioka
wrote about a girl who felt left out because her family was unique. Many authors use figurative
language to develop themes. Shel Silverstein wrote about how everyone is the same When we
turn off the light. Lensey Namioka and Shel Silverstein are two examples. They use similes,
metaphors, and hyperboles to develop the theme of tolerance in the short story The All
American Slurp, by Lensey Namioka and the poem No Difference by Shel Silverstein. In the
short story The All American Slurp, the author, Lensey Namioka uses figurative language to
develop the theme of tolerance by stating Our family retreated back to the sofa as if chased by
enemy soldiers. This shows that they were unable to tolerate the people staring at them, and had
to run away and hide. If they did tolerate the staring, they might of been able to explain that they
usually eat celery that way. Then they might of had more delicious food, and been able to talk
with everyone else. As well as that, the author stated I squirmed and died at least 50 times. This
shows the theme of tolerance because If she were able to stand up to her fears of being
embarrassed, she might of had... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No one would care whether or not you could afford a mansion, so it would be easier to tolerate
not being able to afford anything. As well as that, Silverstein states, We all look the same when

stops judging you, it would be more easy to tolerate because you would actually have friends, and

52. Carol Ann Duffy s Revision of Masculinist Representations...
Carol Ann Duffy s Revision of Masculinist Representations of Female Identity
Carol Ann Duffy is one of the freshest and bravest talents to emerge in British poetry any poetry
for years , writes Eavan Boland (Duffy, 1994, cover). This courage is manifest in Duffy s ability
and desire to revise masculinist representations of female identity and her engagement with
feminine discourse, a concept which, as Sara Mills points out: has moved away from viewing
women as simply an oppressed group, as victims of male domination, and has tried to formulate
ways of analysing power as it manifests itself and as it is resisted in the relations of everyday life.
(p.78)
It is these aspects of Duffy s work that I wish to address here by examining ... Show more content

Ian Gregson comments on this when he states that:
Duffy explores how masculinist ways of seeing determine how women are regarded, even by
themselves, and how language determines the experiences it is supposed merely to describe, how
representation makes dummies of us all. (p.101)
This notion of female identity as a constructed in masculine discourse but accepted by all, is a
recurring theme in Duffy s poetry. She stereotypes many of her characters in order to foreground
their incongruous place within a modern society. She also highlights the inadequacies of language
as a form of expression in the Lacanian sense that no meaning is sustained by anything other than
reference to another meaning (Lacan, p.83). Language, therefore, is an unreliable form of
expression and, as such, is deconstructed by Duffy through the use of dramatic monologues to
represent speech rather than written forms, and by her juxtaposition of seemingly random nouns
and adjectival phrases and her use of compound words. Language is used to create a tension
throughout her work, particularly in her insistence on foregrounding the construction of the poem
itself.
This tension is demonstrated in Recognition , from Selling Manhattan (1987), where Duffy
explores the fabrication of female identity and the inability of language to re present that identity by
employing a dramatic monologue voiced by a despondent housewife:
[...] I love him, through habit, but the proof has

53. The Use Of A Computer Or Itc System
Ransomware is a malware that restricts the use of a computer or ITC system, displays a message
on a computer screen that states the system has been locked or encrypted and that the only way
to re gain the use of the computer or system is through the payment of a ransom which is often
$200 $400 (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, 2016). This type of attack can
install other malware as users attempt to click out of the message screen or to follow the
directions which tell the user to click here to pay the ransom. Victims may pay the cybercriminal in
Bitcoin and re gain the use of their computer or system. Some victims pay and do not get their use

Ransomware is often perpetrated by gangs and other criminals outside the U.S. making it very
difficult to locate and prosecute those involved. The incidents of ransomware are expected to
increase throughout 2017. Experts believe that smartphones and organizations using cloud
based data storage will be targeted. McAfee Labs sees mobile malware continuing its growth in
2017, with ransomware, banking Trojans, and remote access tools among the leading threats
(McAfee Labs, 2017). Smartphones are used by a high percentage of the population in their
personal lives and many use them as part of their employment. If a hacker or hacker group were

the ICT systems and in many incidents it is unknown if the hacker wished to gain financially or

into the hands of someone who could do a great deal of damage with the data gained. The

55. The Diel-Alder Nucleophilic Acyl Substitution
The Diel Alder/Nucleophilic Acyl Substitution Cascade Reaction Introduction The Diels Alder
reaction was discovered and named after the Nobel Prize winning scientists Kurt Alder and Otto
Diels in 1928. Such a reaction occurs when a diene with two adjacent double bonds is mixed with
a dienophile consisting of a double bond in order to create a cyclohexene. The diene must be in
the s cis conformation in order for the electron transfer to engage correctly. If the diene in question
is in s trans conformation then the access to the molecules is limited, thus, no reaction can occur.
The dienophile we used was maleic anhydride. Maleic anhydride possesses high electron
withdrawing characteristics which caused a very quick reaction. The reaction will
