Adhesives
Adhesives come in:
• Ready mixed tubs
• Sachets of dry powder flakes that need to be mixed with water
Adhesives are also available for use with specific wall coverings.

Adhesives
Cellulose adhesive
This has the highest water content of any paste and comes in a powder
form that needs to be mixed with cold water.
• Easy to apply and mix
• Inexpensive
• Contains a fungicide
• Can cause paper to over-expand

Starch adhesives
These are known as flour adhesives, as flour is the main ingredient.
• Suitable for hanging heavy textured preparatory papers
• Contains a fungicide
• More expensive than cellulose
• Difficult to mix
• Can stain

Ready mixed
Ready mixed with a low water content.
• Very strong adhesion
• Can be used to size surfaces
• Contains a fungicide
• Very expensive

• Paper type
• Recommended adhesive

Adhesives
Mixing paste correctly
• Read the manufacturers’ instructions first.
• Follow the manufacturers’ instructions to achieve the correct
consistency.
1. Fill a bucket with the specified amount of water.
2. Add the paste slowly whilst continually stirring the water.
3. Leave to stand for a few minutes to thicken.
4. Stir again and add water if the paste is too thick.
Tip: Mix the paste thicker – you can add water to thin it but you cannot
add paste to make it thicker if it is too thin.

Defects
Poor mixing can cause defects in the consistency of the paste and
result in poor application such as:
• Lumps, too thin or too thick, and contamination
• Blisters, delaminating, stretching and tearing
• Dry edges, springing joints, polished joints, blistering
