Working in your brush
Working in your brush requires you to dip your brush into the paint then
rub the brush against the inside of the paint kettle, ensuring all the
bristles are evenly coated and not just the outer bristles.
Getting a dip means dipping your brush into the paint then tapping it
alternately against the sides of the kettle, ensuring you have an even
coating of paint. This reduces the risk of drips or spills from your brush.

Laying on and laying off paint by brush
Laying on is when you apply the paint to the surface, ensuring the area
is covered.
Laying off is done at the end of the paint process and ensures there are
no misses or runs, and that the paint has even coverage. Failure to do
this properly will result in a poor paint finish.

Cutting in
A decorator will do this first and will cut in the edges around the wall,
ceiling, windows or door frames. The decorator will ensure there is a
crisp sharp line with no paint on adjoining surfaces.

Roller application
Once the decorator has cut in the surface, they will apply the paint by
roller if it is a large area.
The roller must first be dipped (wetting-in the roller will allow the paint
to adhere to the roller) into the paint, ensuring it has an even coating
and the excess paint has been removed. Otherwise paint will drip.
The application is done in sections (using a w technique) beginning at
the top and working down and across. Once applied, the paint is laid off
to ensure the coating is even with no misses or roller marks visible.
