Wallpaper production
Block printing
• A traditional method of printing that
has been used to print wallpaper and
textiles for hundreds of years
• A relief design is first dipped in ink
then applied by hand to a paper to
create the design
• Block-printed wallpapers are
distinguished by their depth of colour
and a distinctive texture, caused as
the printing block is pulled away from
the paper.

Screen printing
• Stencils are placed onto a screen
with a rectangular frame with a fine
woven mesh stretched over it.
• The screen is positioned face down
on the paper before coloured ink is
applied.
• A rubber squeegee is then dragged
across the mesh, forcing ink
through the areas uncovered by the
stencil creating a design.
• The screen is then removed and
placed in the next position and the
procedure is repeated.

Dry embossing
• Paper is fed through a pair of embossing rollers in its dry state
• The design is pressed out by a steel roller with a relief pattern
pressing the paper into a soft roller or male and female rollers where
the relief pattern or textured (male roller) presses into the hollowed
(female roller)
Wet embossing
• Two papers bonded together (duplexed) pressed while the adhesive
bonding the papers is still wet
• Papers moulded/embossed wet are more resistant to stretching and
retain relief better after hanging

Blown vinyl
• An expanding agent is added to liquid PVC
which is then applied to flat wallpaper
• This is then heated at a high temperature
causing the wall covering to expand in
size, producing a three-dimensional effect
