DESCRIPTION:
The 2643C ED-SET Microwave Optics Accessory Set Mark 2B is a complete set of components intended for use with a microwave transmitter and receiver to teach students the principles of optics using 3-cm wavelength microwaves as the “optical” medium. Specifically, the accessories are designed to be used with the 2643A-10 Microwave Transmitter, Mark 2B and the 2643B-10 Microwave Receiver, Mark 2B. It is also fully compatible with the former 2643A Microwave Transmitter, Mark II, and the 2643B Microwave Receiver, Mark II.
This set consists of a goniometer with four arms having tracks for the microwave transmitter and receiver and two positioning attachments for use with these devices. Also provided are one single slit plate, one double slit plate, one quadruple slit (half-reflector) plate, two combination full reflectors (Fabry-Perot plates), one polarization grid, one probe, one refraction tank, a supply of polyethylene beads, sand, and plastic bags.
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:
A—The Goniometer
1. Place the goniometer base on a flat, smooth work surface.
2. Mount three of the four goniometer arms on the center bushing of the goniometer base in any sequence.
3. Place the goniometer protractor scale on the base bushing over the arms, and then engage the pin protruding from the underside of the scale in the mating hole of the arm on which you will place the transmitter. This fixes the protractor scale to 0o relative to the transmitter.
4. Place the goniometer rotary platform on the bushing, over the protractor scale.
5. Place the rotary platform accessory holder on the rotary platform as required, engaging the pins in the mating holes.

- 4. 1. General Method 7. Bisection point P accurately by using lower tangent screw. Check the reading on verniers A and B. The reading on A will be 0’ and on B will be 180’. 8. Now tight lower clamp screw and loose upper clamp screw. 9. Turn the telescope clockwise until the line of sight is on the signal at R. 10.Tighten the upper clamp screw. By turning the upper clamp screw, bisect the signal R exactly. 11.Read both the verniers. 12.The reading of the venire A give the value of the angle POR. The vernier B gives the value of angle PQR after deducting 180’. 4
- 5. 2. Repetition Method This method is used to measure a horizontal angle very accurately. By this method, the angle is measured two or more times and the value is added mechanically. The horizontal is equal to the accumulated value divided by the number of repetitions made. 1. Set up the instrument at the stations Q. Centre it and level up accurately. 2. Release both clamp screws. 3. Make the instrument Zero-Zero. 4. Make the vertical circle at the left side. 5. Take the reading on both A and B vernier. It must be 0,0’0’’ and 180’0’0’’. 6. Now loose the lower clamp screw and turn the telescope towards P. 5
- 6. 2. Repetition Method 7. Bisection point P accurately by using lower tangent screw. Check the reading on verniers A and B. The reading on A will be 0’ and on B will be 180’. 8. Now tight lower clamp screw and loose upper clamp screw. 9. Turn the telescope clockwise until the line of sight is on the signal at R. 10.Tighten the upper clamp screw. By turning the upper clamp screw, bisect the signal R exactly. 11.Read both the verniers. 12.Now, tight the upper clamp screw and loose the lower clamp screw. Rotate the telescope towards the P side with clockwise direction and bisection point P accurately by using lower tangent screw. 6
- 7. 2. Repetition Method 13.Now repeat steps 7 to 10 two times and the final reading in virner is almost thrice the angle. 14.Divide the angle by three and you will get your final angle. 15.Change the face of the instrument right face. The telescope will be in the inverted condition. 16.Repeat the steps 2 to 9 and determine the angle with right face. 17.Determine the average value of the angle obtained with the right face and left face and final angle PQR. 7
