LUNDI 25 NOVEMBRE 2013
enfants.
Killarney.
Le « Rêve géorgien »
devient réalité
Editorial écrit en anglais
par Edmond Y. Azadian et
publié dans The Armenian
de la Russie dans la région ;
réagi avec modération ;
• La région arménienne du
Djavakhk est toujours agitée par son
désir d’autonomie, l’Arménie doit donc
être punie pour les aspirations politiques du Djavakhk et ;
Ivanishvili, Giorgi Margvelashvili, a

Haroutiounian a pendant plusieurs

Six-hundred-year-old
dream fading
BY EDMOND Y. AZADIAN
“Am I the last poet? Am I the last
singer [singing the praise] of my country?” wondered the poet Vahan Teryan
in the aftermath of the Genocide. It
was a doomsday situation which led
the poet to such a degree of desperation.
Armenia has gone through many
catastrophic experiences throughout
its turbulent history, but it has survived, sometimes miraculously, by the
turn of unforeseen events.
Today the most optimistic people
have only that mysterious force to pin
their hope on. Otherwise the country
is once again on the verge of that
doomsday situation.
Finger-pointing, lamenting, expressing anger and frustration are no remedy for the situation. A sincere national
soul searching would be a timely
approach.
People have been wondering what
happened to the long and arduous
road to independence. Were the
dreams and struggles of six centuries
only to see Armenia free and independent in today’s situation?
After six centuries of dreaming,
Armenians are abandoning their
homeland in droves. The statistics are
very depressing and there seems to be
no light at the end of the tunnel. At the
dawn of independence in 1991,
Armenia’s population stood at 4 million. Today it stands at 3 or 3.1 million.
For a small country of 4 million, the
loss of 1 million has a devastating
effect.
Following the fall of Sukarno’s
regime in Indonesia, General Suharto’s
dictatorship massacred 500,000 ethnic
Chinese in Indonesia. All-powerful
China did not even raise a finger,
because that was the politically-correct policy, but above all, the loss of
half a million Chinese for a country of
1.5 billion is insignificant demographically.
Only during the first nine months of
the year 2013 Armenia’s population
has decreased by 10,000 people. A poll
carried out at the end of December
2012 showed that 50 percent of the
remaining population would leave if
they had the opportunity. This statistic
was conducted by the Institute for
Political and Sociological Consulting
under Samvel Manukyan.
According to this institute the causes of migration are many, chief among
them the income gap, lack of confidence in the justice system and low
public involvement. We have to add
also the blockade and the impending
threat of war.
There are conditions that are
beyond the grasp of the Armenian government. Even if some miracle happens and the diaspora forces join the
Armenian government to overcome
those challenges, nothing could
change the geopolitical map of the
region, where Turkey and Azerbaijan
have joined forces to strangulate
Armenia out of existence.
The tenor of Azeri President
Aliyev’s inaugural speech, as he took
office for the third time recently, was
that his country will continue isolating
Armenia internationally. At times he
has stated that Azerbaijan will wait to
see Armenia further depopulated to be
ripe for a take over. He claims
Armenia to be part of Azerbaijani territory, perhaps based on the newly-discovered document that his grandfather was born in Yerevan.
Our ally and defender Russia has
not been helpful in stabilizing the
region to reassure Armenians to continue living in their ancestral lands.
Adding insult to injury, Russia has
opened immigration offices in Yerevan
offering able-bodied workers to move
to Russia’s scarcely-populated regions
with job and citizenship offers. Thus,
destitute Armenian families reluctantly take advantage of these incentives
and depart permanently from
Armenia.
One uncertainty which has plagued
the Armenian people is the issue of
Karabagh. Is Karabagh included in the
Customs Union? Should war break
out, does defense of Karabagh enter
into the military agreement between
Yerevan and Moscow?
Recently, some reassuring voices
have been heard from the Russian
side. Indeed the commander of 102nd
Russian base in Gumri, Andrey
Ruzinsky, has stated: “If the
Azerbaijani leadership decides to
restore the control over Karabagh
through war, the Russian military will
intervene in case of a war and
Armenia will pay a price.” Without trying to interpret the last caveat, let us
say that the warning carries some
weight but it is not a substitute for a
treaty.
Armenians believe that the Russian
base is there for their defense, whereas Moscow has far more important
strategic goals in the region; it intends
to project its posture to keep the balance between Turkey and Iran and in
the current situation to monitor the
war in Syria. It is a known fact that
arming Armenia and Azerbaijan on the
same level only exacerbates the situation rather than reduces the tension
which is the main cause scaring the

Armenia Wins Discovery of the
Year Award of National
Geographic Traveler
The results of the online voting of the best travel destination
contest organized by the Russian
version of the National
Geographic Traveler have been
finalized earlier this month.
Armenia was recognized as
the winner of the Discovery of
the Year Award.
The award is a proof of various activities of the National
Competitiveness Foundation of
Armenia aimed at promoting
multi-faceted tourism of
Armenia. The importance of it lies within the context of increasing the awareness of Armenia’s historical, cultural and religious heritage on the Russian market as well as boosting inbound tourism flows.
Earlier this year, in April, an editorial delegation from the National
Geographic Rassia magazine was hosted in Armenia for a press trip at the invitation of the NCFA. The trip resulted in a series of articles dedicated to Armenia
published in the National Geographic Rassia and the National Geographic
Traveler magazines and a photo gallery placed on the Nat-Geo.ru website,
reported the Public Relations Office of National Competitiveness Foundation
of Armenia.
Minute on 100-th Anniversary of
the Armenian Genocide
During the year 1915-1916, about
1.5 million Armenians were massacred
and thousands more were displaced or
deported from the Ottoman Empire in
present-day Turkey. The “Armenian
Diaspora” today, scattered in different
parts of the world, represents the
greatest effect of the genocide as more
than eight million Armenians now live
outside Armenia. Even after almost a
century, the Armenian genocide still
has serious implications for the
Armenian people, as well as the international community. Although most of
the survivors of the Armenian genocide have passed away, the Armenian
people continue to demand recognition and reparation for the suffering
and injustice inflicted upon their
ancestors.
The World Council of Churches
(WCC) has addressed the issue of the
Armenian genocide in international
fora on several occasions. During the
1979 Session of the United Nations
Human Rights Commission, the
Commission of the Churches on
International Affairs (CCIA) raised the
question of the need for recognition of
the Armenian genocide by the UN. The
6th Assembly of the WCC held in
Vancouver, recognized the importance
of the need to continue to address the
effects of the Armenian genocide in
appropriate contexts. A minute adopted at the Vancouver assembly stated,
“The silence of the world community
and deliberate efforts to deny even
historical facts have been consistent
sources of anguish and growing
despair to the Armenian people, the
Armenian churches and many others.”
The role of the WCC in “enabling the
Armenian churches to speak out and
work towards the recognition of the
first genocide of the 20th century” was
recognized by the Armenian churches
over the years.
Prior to the 10th Assembly of the WCC
the Armenian churches reminded the
WCC General Secretary of the historical reality that the 10th Assembly will
be held on the threshold of the 100th
anniversary of the Armenian Genocide
in 2015. Requests have been made by
the leaders of the Armenian churches
for the WCC to initiate programmes to
observe the 100th anniversary of the
Armenian Genocide in appropriate
ways.
Therefore, the 10th Assembly of the
World Council of Churches meeting in
Busan, Republic of Korea, from 30
October to 8 November 2013, therefore requests the general secretary to:
A. Organize in 2015, around the
commemorative 100th anniversary
date 24 April 2015, an international
conference in Geneva on the recognition of and reparation for the Armenian Genocide with the participation,
among others, of WCC member churches, international organizations,
jurists, historians and human rights
defenders.;
B. Organize an ecumenical prayer
service commemorating the victims of
the Armenian Genocide at the
Cathedral of Geneva in conjunction
with the international conference; and
C. Invite member churches of the
WCC to pray for the memory of the
Armenian martyrs around the dates of
the international conference and also
for recognition of the Armenian
Genocide.

Swiss is firm to erect Monument to
Victims of Armenian Genocide
THE YOUTH CORNER
That got me thinking
You are being moody. Not bipolar.
The City Hall of Geneva is determined in erecting a monument to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, despite the various complaints
made by Turkey. Armenpress reports citing Haberler.com that Sami Kanaan
who follows the activities carried out towards the establishment of the monument by the City Hall, informed that the term “Genocide” will not be marked on
the monument.
Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesman Pierre-Alain Eltschinger announced the
Turkish “Jihan” agency that they acknowledge how the topic of the Genocide is
sensitive for Turkey. “Being in touch with both sides, we aim at contributing to
constructive relations between Turkey and Armenia,” Pierre-Alain Eltschinger
said.
London Tekeyan Trust establishes
new choir “Komitas”
The London Tekeyan Trust (LTT) is
proud to announce that, for the first
time ever in the UK, it has initiated a
professional Armenian choir,
“Komitas”, named after one of the
founders of Armenian classical music.
The LTT, a registered charity since
1979 and the backbone of the Tekeyan
Cultural Association (London) as well
as the Tekeyan Centre Fund
(Yerevan), is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Armenian cultural identity, and since its creation, it
has organized a number of concerts,
exhibitions, public debates, workshops and other cultural events and
community life activities that further
links between the Armenian Diaspora
and Armenia.
The existence of a Professional
Armenian Choir will enhance
Armenian Culture through the
International media in UK and help the
recognition of Armenian cultural values, historical background as well as
the forthcoming Armenian Genocide
Centenary.
In cooperation with TCA London,
the Tekeyan Trust has planned the
activity of the “Komitas” Choir which
includes concerts in London and in
other Armenian community centres in
the UK & Ireland such as Manchester,
Birmingham, Cardiff and Dublin. The
Choir also intends to visit European
Armenian communities as well as
Armenia and to participate in international concerts and festivals. The
Choir repertory consists of a wide
variety of songs: Armenian folk, classical, spiritual and international.
The Choir Conductor Mr. Sipan
Hagopyan, an expert from Armenia, as
well as the volunteer artists will help
the Choir to succeed in the future,
thus enhancing the Armenian musical
heritage all over the world.
The London Tekeyan Trust invites
all who love choral music to become
“Komitas” Choir benefactors in funding its activity for the forthcoming
years. For further information, please
contact Mr V. Ouzounian (vouzounian@tekeyantrust.com).
The LTT and “Komitas” Choir pay
special tribute to all supporters for
their generous contributions which
will allow the Choir to reach new
heights in musical performance and to
secure the Armenian artistic legacy for
generations to come.
No Armenians on board crashed plane in Russia
There were no Armenian citizens and Armenians on board the airplane
that crashed in Kazan, Russia.
Tatarstan Airlines airplane heading from Moscow to Kazan crashed
Sunday while landing at Kazan Airport at 3:25pm GMT. Fifty people, including six crew members on board, were killed. Iker Minnikhanov, the son of
President Rustam Minnikhanov of Tatarstan, was confirmed to be on board
of the Boeing 737 that crashed in central Russia, Gazeta.ru reported.
According to the Russian media, head of the Tatarstan office of the
Federal Security Service Alexander Antonov and the wife of famous sport
journalist Roman Skvortsov were on board, too.
Sometimes Tumbler is a gigantic waste of time, sometimes it’s the
coolest thing ever. At other times, though, it’s also incredibly insightful. The
blogging network seems particularly annoyed with the fact that people use
their words very lightly. What caught my attention is a post about how people use personality disorders to describe their emotional state of the
day.
For example, it does not mean that someone is happy one second and
depressed the next that that person is bipolar. Bipolarity is being in a very
manic and elated state of mind for a certain period of time, let’s say six
months, and then spiraling down into depression for another period of time.
This is not a switch that is done easily or in a second, and it is a very, very
serious condition. Sometimes I hear people confusing bipolarity with something that could, to a very large extent, be associated to Multiple Personality
Disorder, when they think that it has to do with someone being nice one
second and mean the next. It’s not that either. That is called having
mood swings. That happens to everyone, and it has no effect on your
health.
Another example. Once, I told a friend of mine that I liked placing my
DVDs and my CDs in a certain order because otherwise it bothers me. His
first reaction was ‘’Oh, do you have OCD?’’. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
is not about being anal. It’s about, for example, thinking that you are going
to die if you do not check that the door is closed 14 times before going to
bed. It’s an obsessive thought that haunts you, along with a compulsive
actions that you feel that you absolutely have to do.
Difficult times strike us all at some point or another and we all have our
ways to deal with it and moving on. But when it comes to a serious problem
like depression, you obviously know it’s not about getting over it. It’s a
chemical unbalance in your brain, and it requires treatment.
I really do not appreciate how serious issues such as mental illnesses are
downplayed because we are not careful with our words. It makes us sound
ignorant; while really, all it would take is to think twice before declaring
that ‘’you are so depressed!’’

Armenian population away.
Returning to the domestic situation,
the Armenian government can and
must take some measures. It is said
that investments in Armenia have
dropped 65 percent. DiasporaArmenian investments have dropped
even more dramatically. Only the rule
of law can correct this situation. How
many Diasporan Armenian investors
have to be beaten or killed to warn
them to stay away?
In addition, taxation is exercised in
an unfair manner. The tax authorities
are tolerant of oligarchs while the full
brunt of the taxes is directed at the
middle or lower classes to discourage
small businesses. The food monopolies have driven prices three or four
times higher than prices in the region.
There is a 35-percent unemployment rate.
For a middle class family a vacation
in Turkey or Georgia is more affordable there than any resort in Armenia.
Corruption is rampant and only the
government can solve that problem,
yet the government seems to be part
of the problem more than part of the
solution. With the youth leaving the
country at such an alarming rate, one
wonders who will defend the borders.
The current political situation is not
conducive to tackle and resolve serious issues. For months now the political debate has been centered around
an obnoxious member of parliament
questioning the president about his
gambling habits at a European political forum as if Armenia did not have
any other problems. This is reminiscent of the Byzantine Court debating
how many angels could fit on the tip
of a needle while Fatih Sultan Mehmet
was scaling the ramparts.
On the other hand, the opposition
leader and former president, Levon
Ter-Petrosian, is asking President
Serge Sargisian to resign. But whoever
replaces him will be soon surrounded
by the same oligarchs who control and
strangle Armenia’s economy. Any turmoil will deteriorate the situation even
further. Influential print and electronic
media are financed by foreign sources
whose last worry is Armenia’s plight.
That is why the role of media is
more confusing than educating or
guiding.
Incidentally, those oligarchs have
moved their capital overseas to be the
first ones to jump ship should a wreck
occur.
No one has yet found or suggested
a solution to these dire situations and
this column is not presumptuous
enough to offer a silver bullet.
Only when the government and the
opposition come to their senses, realizing that the problem hurts both sides
and needs a supreme and united effort
to find a solution internally and fight
external threats, will we find some
stability in the country and hope for
economic improvement and survival.
