Tigran Sargissian a également remercié
venir.

LUNDI 21 AVRIL 2014
nibales ! »
cielles ».
L’attaque de Kessab semblait immi-
nent et certains facteurs coïncidaient;
Marmara.
Ainsi, le terrain a été préparé pour
la relance de perspectives hégé-
moniques au Moyen-Orient grâce à une
coopération tripartite entre la Turquie,
l’Arabie saoudite et Israël.

Edouard Nalbandian invite les
Nations Unies à agir contre la Turquie
Le ministre des Affaires étrangères
de la République d’Arménie, Edouard
Nalbandian, a envoyé le 28 mars une
lettre au secrétaire général Ban Ki-
moon des Nations Unies sur la récente
escalade de la situation en Syrie du
Nord-Ouest. Le service des médias et
des relations publiques du ministère
des Affaires étrangères de la
République d’Arménie a informé :

Clash of Imperial
Ambitions
BY EDMOND Y. AZADIAN
The 20th century witnessed the
process of decolonization; many colo-
nial powers gradually allowed their
subject nations to determine their own
ways of development and sovereignty,
which were often achieved through
the shedding of tremendous amounts
of blood and tears, from the Indian
subcontinent to Africa.
But the 21st century came to wit-
ness the reversal of that process; it
looks like colonialism is returning
with a vengeance, albeit under a differ-
ent guise. France is back in Mali and
the Central African Republic. The US,
during the Bush-Cheney administra-
tion, boasted of imperial aspirations,
destroying sovereign nations and
bringing forth “regime change,” a pri-
ority in their political agenda. When a
neocon from the Bush-Cheney cabal
was asked why the US should destroy
Iraq and target Iran, his cynical answer
was: “Because we can.”
President Obama rose to tame that
arrogance, advocating that the US is
not the world’s policeman, to the cha-
grin of Cold War relics like Sen. John
McCain. The latter has been visiting all
the hotspots of the world and offering
his simplistic solutions to the complex
problems of the world — that the US
has to solve all those problems at the
butt of a gun. Fortunately, there aren’t
too many takers in the war-weary pub-
lic that responds to that kind of
rhetoric. Even the most hawkish presi-
dential candidates are treading cau-
tiously, though they may blame
President Obama for being too soft.
For any demagogue, it is easy to blur
the line between softness and diplo-
macy.
Today, the focus is on President
Putin and Russia. The annexation of
Crimea to Russia is being portrayed as
imperial arrogance; Putin is being
blamed for trying to rebuild the col-
lapsed Soviet Union, neglecting to
mention that Crimea was part of
Russia until 1954 and is populated by
majority Russians.
During their long phone conversa-
tion, when President Obama accused
President Putin of violating interna-
tional law, the latter pointed to the
case of Kosovo. Indeed, the US and
the European Union bombed the for-
mer Yugoslavia into submission and
its constituent republics were forcibly
“liberated” and Kosovo, a country on
lands usurped from Serbia, had
installed as its leaders former thugs
and gun-runners overnight who
became statesmen, standing with the
help of NATO forces.
The blame game will continue
between the major powers for some
time to come.
Another rising imperial power is
China with a population of 1.5 billion.
Beijing has been flexing its muscles in
Southeast Asia to intimidate Japan,
India and Vietnam. Incidentally, there
is no love lost between the two com-
munist nations of China and Vietnam,
who at one time resorted to war and
the ironic outcome of that conflict was
that Communist Vietnam offered its
deep sea ports to the US navy.
The most dangerous imperial ambi-
tion is the one harbored by Turkey. At
one point, Prime Minister Erdogan’s
ambition was believed to be perennial
megalomania, until Foreign Minister
Ahmet Davutoglu’s emergence as an
advocate of Ottomanism. Davutoglu is
a scholar diplomat, who knows his his-
tory well. He came to add an ideologi-
cal veneer to Erdogan’s grandiose
dreams to regain his nation’s former
imperial glory.
Davutoglu is not embarrassed to
state in sophisticated circles that in
the Ottoman period, all subject
nations lived in “brotherly love” and
that he longed to bring those idyllic
times back.
Davutoglu was successful to a cer-
tain extent in bringing back Ottoman
influence to the Balkans, with the help
of NATO.
All the nations in the Balkans had
suffered for four centuries under the
bloody rule of the sultans, until they
revolted and liberated their countries
from under Turkish tyranny. But
today, the West is using Turkey as a
watchdog in solving any problems in
the Balkans.
One casualty of Turkish presence in
that region is the recognition of the
Armenian Genocide by Bulgaria,
which suffered under the Turkish
yoke, like the Armenians. But a power-
ful Turkish presence in Bulgaria and
its parliament thus far has hampered
Genocide recognition.
Emboldened by NATO support,
Ankara has been extending its imperi-
al ambitions all the way to Central
Asia. The last time there were clashes
in the Uyghur region of China between
the Muslim Uyghurs with ethnic
Chinese, Erdogan blamed Beijing for
perpetrating a genocide against the
Uyghur minority. However, later, to
spite his NATO partners, Erdogan did
not hesitate to strike an arms deal
with “genocidal” China.
Turkey does not miss any opportu-
nity to remind the world of its past
glory days as an empire and is trying
to revive that notion whenever there is
a whiff of hope.

US Senate resolution directs
president to recognize the
Armenian Genocide
WASHINGTON, DC - Senate
Foreign Relations Committee
Chairman Robert Menendez (D-NJ)
and Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) intro-
duced legislation calling upon the
United States President to work
toward an Armenian-Turkish relation-
ship based on Turkey’s truthful
acknowledgment of the Armenian
Genocide.
It was resolved:
(1)to remember and observe the
anniversary of the Armenian Genocide
on April 24, 2014.
(2)that the President should work
toward an equitable, constructive, sta-
ble, and durable Armenian-Turkish relationship that includes the full acknowl-
edgment by the Government of the Republic of Turkey of the facts about the
Armenian Genocide; and
(3)that the President should ensure that the foreign policy of the United
States reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues re-
lated to human rights, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and genocide
documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide.
STEPANAKERT – The adversary
carried out yet another diversionary
intelligence operation.
The operation was carried out on
Monday 7th April at around 10:30 pm,
in the southeastern (Marjanlu) direc-
tion of the Line of Contact between
the Karabakh-Azerbaijan opposing
forces, the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic (NKR) Defense Army repor-
ted.
The NKR Defense Army position-
holding units, however, took counter
actions and drove the Azerbaijani
army members back to their starting
positions.
While withdrawing, however, the
adversary gave three casualties—one
of which, an officer—and six others
were wounded as they stepped on the
landmines that were placed in the
defensive sector of a minefield.
The Karabakh side, on the other
hand, suffered no casualties, the NKR
MOD press service informed.
Following the incident, the NKR
Defense Army vanguard units con-
tinue to confidently carry out their
military task, and they control the
situation along the entire length of the
Line of Contact.

Vatican reveals Armenian genocide
documents from secret Archives
In the Secret Vatican Archives are stored
documents that testify to the unprecedent-
ed and shocking genocide by the Ottoman
Empire against the Armenians after the
First World War, documents that will be
published soon in a book co-edited by the
same Vatican Archives. The advanced news
arrived, a little by surprise, during the pre-
sentation in the Vatican of the exhibit “Lux
Arcana”, which - from next February - will
open to the public, for the first time, the
treasures of one of the oldest and most extensive archives in the world.
The testimonials, explained the prefect of the Secret Archives, Monsignor
Sergio Pagano, describe “in detail” the “procedures of torture that the Turks
used towards the Armenians make me ashamed to be a man, and if it were not
for faith, I would see only darkness”.
It is easy to imagine that the publication of these documents reignite the ten-
sion between the Holy See and Turkey, at a time when the memory of the killing
of Monsignor Luigi Padovese, Apostolic Vicar of Anatolia, a year ago June 3rd, is
still alive.
The Catholic Church is still waiting for an acknowledgment by the Turkish
state, although recently some progress has been made. For example, it has
become easier to perform pilgrimages to the church in Tarsus, the birthplace of
St. Paul.
10. That got me thinking
Everything I loved about Divergent
Although I am not the type of person to watch a movie without having
read the book first, I decided to take a chance on Divergent by accepting
my friend’s offer to go to the movies. I really did not know what to expect,
since I had not even seen the trailer. Five minutes after the movie started,
however, I was completely hooked.
Based in a post-apocalypse Chicago, Divergent is the story of Tris Prior.
She lives in a world where everyone has a place and order. There are five
factions in which you could be classified: Erudite, the intelligent; Amity, the
peaceful; Candor, the honest; Dauntless, the brave; and Abnegation, the
selfless. Tris is born in the latter faction, but feels as though she does not
belong. Soon, this feeling of not belonging becomes a serious problem. She
discovers that she is Divergent. In a world where conformity is key, she is in
danger.
The movie has all the classic dystopian themes: fear of difference, obedi-
ence, civil duty, order, and abuse of power. The way those themes are
developed and how the characters eventually rebel is surprisingly clever
and interesting. Powerful familial bonds and friendships are also present,
making the story even more complex. Also, as I watched the movie, the
Harry Potter freak in me couldn’t help but smile: Divergent, like Albus
Dumbledore, reminds us that our character is defined much more by our
choices than by our abilities. Although Tris cannot belong in any faction
because her very nature rejects the idea of making such decisions, it does
not stop her from choosing the faction she admired as a child and fighting
for her place as a Dauntless.
The love story is also very well developed. I loved the fact that it is a sec-
ondary plotline that emphasizes the importance of finding someone who
will be your partner rather than your savior. Tris and Four (played by the
oh-so-handsome Theo James) help each other figure out what to do in a
world where they are in danger.
The acting is absolutely perfect. Shailene Woodley was on-point and her
performance was incredibly engrossing. In my opinion, Kate Winslet was
the second star of the movie. She continues to blow me away with her
charm and abilities.
As I haven’t been so excited about a series since Harry Potter, I cannot
wait to read the books and become an even bigger fan.

THE YOUTH CORNER
Clash of imperial...
Cont’d from page 9
Iraq into three identifiable administra-
tive regions, Ankara tried to capture
the oil-rich Kurdish Kirkuk region,
capitalizing on the presence of the
Turkomans there and even threatened
to intervene militarily to “protect” the
Turkomans who were not in any dan-
ger. But the Kurds pre-empted and
they prevailed, establishing their own
administration. Today, the safest
region for Armenians is the Kurdish
region, where they even have two rep-
resentatives in the local parliament.
Ankara tried to extend the same
kind of “protection” to the Tatars dur-
ing the recent Crimean crisis. Russia
and Turkey have waged two wars over
Crimea and the Tatar population is left
over from those wars.
Ankara resents the Crimea takeover
by Russia for two reasons: Ukraine is
more friendly with Turkey than
Russia. During the Karabagh War,
Ukraine helped Azerbaijan militarily
and the current unelected government
is cut from the same Turkophile
cloth.
The other reason is that the Black
Sea was becoming an unchallenged
waterway for the Turkish fleet, which
will be overshadowed by the Russian
fleet after the recent events.
Ankara and Baku claim to be one
nation with two governments and
Turkey effectively supports
Azerbaijan’s territorial ambitions by
trying to debilitate Armenia under
their joint blockade.
Ankara’s Ottomanist designs fuel
Azerbaijan’s war rhetoric. During the
recent celebration of Nowruz,
President Aliyev once again unleashed
an angry tirade against Armenia stat-
ing, “Armenia is a fascist state created
on historic Azerbaijani lands, which
will eventually be won back by
Azerbaijan — not only Nagorno-
Karabagh but also substantial parts of
modern Armenia is ancient
Azerbaijani territory.”
This hallucinatory statement is tan-
tamount to a declaration of war and
yet, every time there is a flare up on
the border, the Organization for
Security and Cooperation in Europe
representatives, who seem to have
traded diplomacy with hypocrisy, call
on both sides to restrain themselves.
This is a case where it seems simplis-
tic even-handedness covers up blatant
warmongering.
The globe is plagued with many
conflicts that result from the clash of
the ambitions of imperial powers that
act in the same manner as their colo-
nial predecessors, only under more
modern images and slogans.
Armenia is trapped in the Russian
zone of influence. That is its curse as
well as its blessing.
Karabakh’s right to self-determination
is undisputed – Armenia President
The Karabakh people’s right to self-determination is undisputed. Armenia
President Serzh Sargsyan, who is paying an official visit to Turkmenistan, stated
the aforesaid at his joint news conference Tuesday with President Gurbanguly
Berdimuhamedow of Turkmenistan, and devoted to the results of their talks.
“We discussed the course of development of Armenian-Turkmen relations. I
am glad that the Armenian-Turkmen relations are developing dynamically.
“We also conferred on trade and economic cooperation. We are confident
that these relations will become more active, and our trade and economic rela-
tions will be deserving of our political relations.
“As a result of the talks, documents were signed on the political and econom-
ic cooperation issues. Soon the citizens of our two countries will be able to
make use of the opportunity of direct flights between Armenia and
Turkmenistan.
“We discussed regional and international matters. Armenia’s and Turkmenistan’s
objective of contributing to the establishment of peace and security in the
future, too, was confirmed.
“Today, I once again presented our principal position toward the settlement
of the Karabakh issue. The matter can and must be resolved solely by way of
peace and based on the precepts and norms of international law. The Karabakh
people’s right to self-determination is undisputed, and its de facto organization
should be specified de jure. We are grateful to Turkmenistan for its understand-
ing of and neutrality in this key issue for us.
“The long-standing history and the traditions of friendship unite our two
nations. We also spoke about the humanitarian component of our relations.
“The talks will serve the development of friendly ties between our countries.
“I gladly invited the Turkmenistan President for a visit to Armenia because
such meetings bring great benefit,” the President of Armenia specifically said at
the joint news conference.
YEREVAN, October 2. /ARKA/ -
Armenia will be exporting drone air-
crafts to Denmark, Executive Director
of Union of Information Technology
Enterprises Karen Vardanyan told
Novosti international press center.
Armenia held its first ArmRobotics
competition of drones in June. Five
teams participated in the competition
and presented their aircrafts that
investigate territory, recognize signs,
transfer images online, throw out
loads of up to 300 grams and return
them to the initial point. One of the
winners has already registered a com-
pany and produced the first commer-
cial drone, Vardanyan said.
According to a preliminary agreement,
about 10 drones will be manufactured
monthly and the aircraft will be used
for agro explorations in Denmark and
aerial survey of sown areas.
Vardanyan also said drones produced
in Armenia may be used for defence,
for panorama video of highways and
detection of traffic jams and violations
in particular.
Some 55 robotics study groups have
been organized by the Union in sec-
ondary schools throughout Armenia to
boost technology development in the
country.
