Medieval art and architecture spanned from 500-1500 AD and included stained glass, sculpture, mosaics and tapestries. Major architectural periods were Romanesque from 500-1000 AD and Gothic from 1100 AD. Important scholars and writers of the time included Thomas Aquinas, Dante Alighieri, Geoffrey Chaucer, and François Villon. Significant medieval women included St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Clare of Assisi, Eleanor of Aquitane, and Queen Isabella of Castile.
