June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Pre-production
• What are you making? I'm making a music video/documentary. It will have
elements of both and I'm going to try combine to make something I don’t thinks
ever been done which also makes it hard as there's nothing to base it off. But this
also means I have full creative freedom and can make it exactly how I want it. I like
to use skate edits as inspiration as I feel the shot types and angles they use are best
suited to what I'm going for and I also like the rawness of the videos and is
something I'm going to go for in my project.
• Why? (What is the purpose of making your Film) The main purpose
is to capture the youth culture of York and to do this is an original but authentic
way and its all do see what the youth actually feel about the culture where making.
• Who is it for? (Audience) its mainly for the youth but will be suitable for
people older than 13 as there might be some strong language.
• Where will it appear/on what? (How will audience see it) it will
be a video so people will e able to view it on YouTube.
Reflection:
3. Pre-production:
My inspiration and overall idea for project.
It was hard to find something to base my idea off as there's nothing out there that is the
same as what I'm waning to make so instead I watched some documentary's skate edits
music videos and even interviews to get an idea of how I can incorporate each different
element to create a smooth clean video that shows creativity and also really represents
the meaning I'm trying to get across and to show off his culture we are creating in a way
that represents it correctly. I'm also watching a lot of celebrity interviews on YouTube to
get an idea of ways I could set up the interviews and how I could ask the question or if I
could do it without actually asking and just trying to find the right formula to create
something I actually feel goes with what I'm trying to do. I'm also trying to figure out
how to fit everything together without it looking choppy so by watching these music
videos skate edits and interviews I think I'm starting to find a way that could work. I
think ill start of with more of an edit of the footage I gather and show of my editing by
using the beat to show of my editing techniques. Then in-between parts I can
implement the clips of the interviews
4. Pre-production:
Interview questions.
What is your opinion of youth culture?
What influence has youth culture had on you?
Do you think youth culture is having a positive impact on the youth and the world?
Do you think youth culture has impacted on your fashion sense and music sense?
Do you think youth culture gets a bad rep for no reason or do you think its justified?
5. Pre-production:
Use this space to document whatever pre-production work you did for your project. It will vary
from person to person and project to project. You will need to add more slides. Delete this
advice once you don’t need it.
6. Resources
Equipment/ Props/
Costume needed
Locations needed
Old 2000s camcorder York city centre no specific locations but
any that fit the feel of the video
Phone camera Museum gardens
Microphone possibly A field
tripod Studio in college
Casual clothing Somewhere suitable for dancing
7. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
camera dies bring extra batteries or use phone camera if
necessary.
people don’t show up. find other people to fit in but if worst comes to
worst just do it yourself.
when editing the work doesn’t save and you’ve
lost the work.
set a reminder every 20 mins to remember to
save work and upload to one drive.
camera breaks. again if possible try borrow someone else's to
keep the same look or use phone and edit
footage as best as possible.
the weather isn’t what you had planned for on
the day of shooting.
have another day scheduled just in case or try
get the best footage possible on that day and
improvise.
8. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
filming anywhere that you could fall from. either don’t film there or keep at a distance
from the edge and make sure someone is with
you.
covid 19 keep distanced and where masks if close.
if any shots contain any skating or anything else
which could be dangerous.
only let people who know what they are doing
do these but make sure they feel comfortable
and safe doing so.
filming near water. if doing so keep a good distance away so you
don’t fall in and also so no equipment doesn’t
fall in.
crossing roads and moving through places. keep away from roads and if crossing make
sure its safe and that everyone you with is being
safe aswell.
9. Production Schedule
Day/Lesson Tasks
Easter over easter try get as much footage as possible
as it’s a holiday so we have more time.
week 1 also carry on getting more footage whether
that be going out and getting it or using the
studio. And get some footage into premiere
including the songs
week 2 create first draft to get a good outline of the
structure and way the production will look so
throughout production I can add and tweak it
until I feel its what I want it to be.
week 3 carry on getting footage and adding footage to
production whilst editing and trying new editing
techniques
week 4 editing the production and trying to get as
close to finishing as possible so I can use the
final week to go over and make sure everything
is fine.
week 5 finish anything that is needed and go over and
check everything is working right and
everything is on time.
