INITIAL IDEAS!
3. During the course of the pre- production section of the unit21- Creative unit.
We had to make sure that we had everything panned and organised before
actually going fourth and doing our actual production. We had to make sure we
had done the following pre-production task for our genre of project(music video
was mine) and complete these before proceeding to creation - Research on
existing music videos( For inspiration), Production schedule(what and when we
were doing certain things), Shot list(Variety of shots I would contribute on my
video), Lyric Annotation( o create ideas), Budget(to make it more realistic),
Cast and crew, Equipment, Reece photos(chosen locations to film),
Clearances/copyright(To make certain it was legal), Health and safety, Legal
and ethical and finally codes of practise. These had to be completed to ensure
that when we came to doing the production period of the project we were all
organised and confident with our own individual projects. This would also allow
us to have a helping hand when doing the production. I think that during this
part of the procedure I used my time well and I think this benefited me when it
came to actually making my music video. This was a hue helping hand as when
it came to the period of filming I knew exactly what I was going to shoot where,
what and when. Also during this hurdle of the project I learnt that making sure
you have completed all of the pre-production before filming and making sure
you have all your ideas are clear it benefits hugely when it comes to filming
because you know what to do straight away making the process less time
consuming.
PRODUCTION PROCESS!
4. PRE-PRODUCTION
Music Video Research- This was the first
stage of our pre production process this is
where we look at different sources of
inspiration to help us with our own
individual projects. I looked through a
variety of different types of music videos
including different genres Performance,
Narrative and Conceptual. I then wrote
about the ones that gave me the most
inspiration and gave my ideas that I could
contribute in my own project like Avicci-
The Nights. I also done this with many
other videos to ensure I had a wide range
of knowledge about different types of
music videos. This also made me have a
much wider variety of inspiration helping
my make my own video.
Pre Production schedule-
I believe that making one of these
schedules was very beneficial in the long
ring this was because it helped me know
exactly what I was doing and when I was
doing it making sure that I would be able
to reach and achieve deadlines and
goals. This schedule helped me
understand what and when I was going
to do certain tasks. For example when I
was going to do pre production tasks
such as annotating the lyrics etc. this
was a huge advantage for me as it made
me a lot more organised in the long run.
Shot list-
I made a shot list to ensure I knew
what shots I was going to be doing in
my music video. This was to also help
me consider a variety of different shot
types to make my video a better
quality. I think that if I had not done
this I would not have been as
organised and would have rushed and
used rubbish shots in my video, so I am
glad I have done this because it has
made me put a selection in with has
enhanced the skill and quality of my
video.
5. PRE-PRODUCTION
Storyboard- After annotating my
lyrics of my song choice it allowed me
to make myself a story board of my
music video. This allowed my to know
what I was going to include in my
music video. This was very beneficial
as I knew what I was going to do
before doing the practical part of
filming it. However I did make a few
changes in my video compared to my
music video this was because there
were some decisions I made that I
personally think made my video
better.
Annotated Lyrics- To gain
better understanding of the song
Summer- Calvin Harris I got the
lyrics off the internet to see the real
meaning behind the lyrics of the
song this helped as it made me
think of initial ideas I could do in my
video that would link in to the lyrics
of the song. This also help me gain a
more in depth knowledge of the kind
of atmosphere and genre the video I
was making would have to be to suit
the genre of the song.
Cast and Crew- After having a
better understanding of the concept of
the song I decided that I was going to
have to get together a cast and crew. I
chose Luke Warren, Jack Routledge and
Max Stacey for my cast as I believe that
these were the characters that were
going to be able to suit the genre and
summery vibe of the video. I am glad that
I used these people in my video as I think
that the gave of the right attitude during
the video witch perfectly fitted the
atmosphere and genre of the song. This
helped me create a better video as I was
using the right cast in the video.
6. PRE PRODUCTION
Clearances and Copyright-
• Permission to use the song from the
Record Producers done by a simple
email.
• Make sure that everyone in the video is
fine with being in it and have asked for
permission of each
• These are all persuasions that needed
to be done before going ahead and
filming/editing the video itself this is to
make sure that what you are doing is
totally legal and everyone in and out of
the production is absolutely certain
they want to be in it and it is fine with
them.
There are also other procedures that need to be taken care
of for example legal and ethical meaning:
• Nothing to cause offence to an viewers.
• Make sure the music video is a suitable for a variety of
different ages groups.
• No inappropriate activities including smoking and
drinking.
• If young people are featured in the music video make
sure that they are not doing any illegal or unethical
things including nudity.
• There wont be any offensive language.
• No sexual scenes featured in the video.
• No inappropriate clothing e.g. Too revealing.
• If any Under 18 year old are included in the video make
sure that you have parent consent to prevent further
problems.
7. PRODUCTION
Filming! Firstly I made sure I knew exactly what I was going to be doing by
looking through all of my pre- Production tasks this allowed me to
know exactly what to do making me more organised and confident
when it came to making my actual video. Firstly I got my main piece of
equipment witch was a Go-Pro Hero 3 and got some fitting for it for
example the head piece and a Go Pole to ensure that I could video a
different variety of different shots. I then went out and shot some of
my clips in the local area where I live( Ringwood). I made sure that did
a range of different shots as I knew this would benefit my video in the
long run. As you can see I took many different video clips ranging from
a variety of different types of shots. I filmed most things that were on
my story board that I thought would be affective.

8. STRENGTHS
The music video I have produced is suitable for the target audience I set at the beginning of
the project.
The music video I have produced fits the atmosphere and vibe of the song I had chosen.
The variation of shots used creates a more interesting final product than if I had not used a
variety.
I used ef fects including slow motion and Black and White image control in my video to
enhance the quality of my video.
It matches parts perfectly from my story board indicating the organisation of my project.
Weaknesses
Some of the storyboard doesn’t completely work with my final Music video.
Solution- To prevent this form happening next time I will make sure that I am able to access all
the ideas I have.
Some of my clips are a bit repetitive.
Solution- To prevent this from occurring next time I will make sure that I will take a variety of
dif ferent clips so that the final product is more interesting for the audience.
I didn’t use a variety of dif ferent editing techniques.
Solution- To make my music video better I could have used more editing skills to make my video
more professional.
I didn’t have very stable shots.
Solution- To prevent this from happening next time I could use a tripod to film my shots to create
better quality shots I could have also spent more time witch would have been more beneficial in
the long run.
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES!
9. Overall I think that my music video was fairly successful this was because I didn’t
have some good factors during the process witch has been identified through my
final piece. For example my final piece clearly fits the target audience of the song
and also it fits in with the atmosphere and the vibe of the song. This is good as it
make people who are watching the video relate to the song as I have made sure it
works well with the song I have chosen. However there were some improvements
that I could have made that I will make sure I will do in future pieces. For example I
could have made sure that I took better quality shots making it a better video to
watch. I also think that my pre production stage of the project went very well as I
made sure that I went through thoroughly and in depth this was very beneficial to
me as I think that it made me more organised when it came to the production
duration of the project. Next time I do this sort of media project I am going to do
some improvement to allow me to ,make a better more professional video including
spending more time and effort on the production process( Filming and Editing) I
think this part is a very crucial part of the process as I think this is what makes
your final project a better quality. However overall this was a good project that I
enjoyed thoroughly as it was something I had a lot of interest in. However it wasn’t
just fun and interesting it has giving me a good guideline of what to make sure to
do and avoid in up-coming project of this type.
