STAGE 5
PRODUCTION
REFLECTIONS
Your Name
 This proforma is to record how you worked on your production
 You should complete this each week during production
 Consider all relevant areas that you covered that week
 Think about what worked/what didn’t work/how you can improve
and actions for the following sessions/weeks
We started this week of by making a short film which was based around
someone having to pick up a key which I found very interesting to make as
although I had made a small video before this was much better than the irn-
bru advert which we had made, but unfortunately for this video I didn't finish
the film as I couldn't find any music to add to the advert. In this film instead
of using the camera I had to act it which I don`t think I will want to do again.
The next day we moved onto getting audio for apart of the film which was
Shawn of the dead which we had to go to certain areas around the college
site to find audio which would work well with each individual part of the film,
so we sent around college finding different sound effects to use including
going into an elevator to record the noise of the beep when it opened which
worked well for when he walked into the store, and there where many other
sound effects which we recorded. After we had completed both of these two
things the day after we started with our main project which was to come up
with the initials plans for what we wanted to do, and the main factor was that
we had to base the whole thing around time as it had to involve either a
watch or a clock which I decided to go with a watch and also we had to make
sure that we had the phrase "Time is running out", my final idea which I had
came up with would be that I want to have a person who can control time
with a watch and as he turn the watch to the right time his surroundings fast
forward in time with the watch.
First of all this week we started off by starting our research or for some
people completing it, in the research the main aim was to find things
about the kinds of work we have done, such as looking at older work
which we have done that include both audio and filming sections
which asks for the different techniques which we have used in the past
sections. Also with the research we had to either do a survey or
questionnaire which i decided to go with a survey to find out the
results at the end and then we had to type about the results and see
what kind of audience that we would target and also what kind of
gender we would chose to aim at, and i decided to not go with a
specific gender as i didn't want to block anyone out of the short film.
Also i feel like the research which we had to go went quite well
because i feel like i have done all the things which i needed to, but on
the other hand i still haven`t finished all of the work for the research as
i hadn't done everything about the audience research as at the time i
didn't have all of the responses to the survey so i couldn't write about
them which intern left me work that still needs to be completed but i
am only a few slides away from finishing the whole PowerPoint. In the
future when doing research i will make sure that i have done work
which i cannot do outside of college in the time which i have been
given as i do not want to fall behind, also another thing which i will try
and improve on in the future would be to spend more time outside of
college on my instead of getting distracted and leaving it all to do at
college.
For the start of this week we initially started of by continuing our pre-
production which i started of by completing by contingency plan by
checking the different things which could go wrong during the filming,
including things such as breaking the camera or it could be faulty which
would result in an increase in time which would be needed to record the
short film and it could push back the editing time. The most interesting
part of the contingency plan was the different individual things which
could effect the time which i have to edit and also the most useful part of
the contingency plan would be that i saw would be that there are individual
people who are responsible for each mistake that happens but most of the
time as there are only going to be 2 people throughout the short film 1
filming which is me and the other who is acting out what is needed, and
mainly the responsibility lied upon me. I have learned quite a lot from this
contingency plan is that you need to look at all the things which could go
wrong even if there is a very small chance that they could occur, as well i
learned that there isn't always someone responsible for something which
happens that isn't planned. Something else which we continued on
throughout this week would be the other section of planning which needed
to be done which started of with the proposal which went through the
different things which you wanted to include in your short film and then
the audience which it would be portrayed to, as i needed to make sure that
it could be viewed by anyone in the world as i didn't want to be gender
specific as it would block people out of watching it. Also the most
interesting part of the proposal was learning about the different
demographics and psycho-graphics as it taught be new things about the
film industry.
As of this week we have finally managed to get onto the filming section Which has been
one of the more enjoyable parts to this rotation as i enjoy filming each part of my shot list
and what they actually look like, as i knew what it would some what look like through the
story board as each individual shot will link well with each other, for mine mainly the
section where the character across the shot and then at the same time it follows close behind
him walking and seeing the watch on the floor. Another shot which i enjoyed filming was
the POV section which was the character picking up the watch, the main reason which i
preferred this shot over any of the other ones was that i wanted the aspect of having a first
person view of the character and what they are doing, as not many short films which i have
seen include any kind of FPS aspect in them. But in the future i will want to make sure that
each shot is exactly that i want to be as for this time i may have not included some as i
couldn't due to time management which is completely my own fault, And forgetting props
which where necessary for both mine and other people filming as it delayed the amount of
shots which i could have completed by a few days, due to lack of props. And also
something which intrigued me about the short film section where the various array of
different kind of shots which could be shot starting from long shot to Low angle shot, the
reason these type of shots intrigue would be that they can give a completely different effect
on the audience depending on the type of shot, for example a Low angle can give the aspect
of dominance and a POV shot looking upwards can show weakness in the character.
Another thing which we had done for the week would be to edit our short films which i
have nearly completed, and for the editing process i really enjoyed it because you can see
different which i have had to do to be able to work with the different shots that i have
included as well i have had to look on the internet to be able to work out how to make the
green screen work which took time but i managed to get it to work but there is still quite a-
lot i need to add to the green-screen to get rid of all of the extra things which i do not want
there, also as i said i used tutorials through youtube to help me configure the green screen
so that it works but i will have to continue watching more video on it to help me. I feel like
looking through the internet it gives me a larger array of things which could help me in the
future if i where to do another short film, because before hand i didn't know how to use a
green-screen on premiere pro because i had never used a green-screen.
For this week i continued on with the editing of my short
film which i had to try a make the green screen look
somewhat normal by using you tube to try and find different
tutorials to watch and help me do my work which i was
struggling on because with the green screen you have to get
the correct area while using the ultra key effect and it took
me quite a while to get it so that there was minimum green
area. So once i had managed to that i moved on to getting
all of the shots connecting them all together so that they
look right when putting them together but with these shots
we were not allowed to include any audio from the cameras
so we had to record the audio directly after the filming
because we needed to get the right kind of audio which
connected well with the visuals so once we had got the
audio we had to loop the audio over and over again for the
amount of time which we needed. Another thing which I had
done for the last week was start my evaluation which was
one of the most time consuming sections of the piece of
work which I have had to do throughout this rotation, mainly
because I had to collect feedback from my peers to see what
there opinion was on my final short film, as well with this
feedback which I had been given they had to say what things
they liked from the short film and then all the things which
could have been improved.
