Joe Hayes FMP Evaluation
This year for my Final Major Project I was instructed to originate, develop and research an idea for a
media product, some examples of the products I could have chosen to do are: music video, photo
shoot, motion graphics composition or a radio advert. After much thought I chose to create a music
video. The reason I chose to do a music video is because reflecting over my strengths and
weaknesses of my first year the music video was the one in which I got the highest grade; but also
enjoyed doing the most so it was an inanimate decision to do a music video again in order to achieve
the best grade possible whilst not losing interest because I enjoy making them. The song I chose to
do a music video for was ‘Sam Binga – AYO Ft. Redders. Once I finalised this idea I began to use
YouTube in order to research other music videos from the same genre/artist to generate ideas for
my final piece, for this I needed to analyse the styles and conventions used in them. After conducting
my research on other related videos I decided to keep to the idea of using fast paced scenes and
popular branding within the songs music genre such as Nike or Adidas. On my first shoot I went to
the Lowry Hotel in Manchester which is where my original first scene will be shot. This location was a
discrete location, I chose to set up filming in the corner on a bench where nobody could have
bothered us. I also filmed in many other locations such as my own house, friends’ houses, in my car
and under various bridges all to suit my original storyboard plan and to stay on track.
When I decided I had enough footage I began to upload my clips onto Adobe Premiere Pro in which I
started piecing together my clips, and cropping/editing my way along the songs timeline so I was
well on my way to completing my music video. However, after I started editing my clips together I
began to realise that I would need A LOT more shots in order to fill my songs expected timeline of
3:22. Nevertheless I used up all the clips I had, leaving room for more clips to fit in. I booked a
camera out a few times over the course of 4-5 weeks, each time coming back with new additional
clips ready to be pieced in to my FMP. After I had enough clips to complete my music video I began
to realise that some of my first original clips were not up to the quality of my newer clips (mainly due
to the fact they were filmed on different cameras). To resolve this I decided to take up more time to
re-film my first scenes (with the upgraded camera of course). Once my sequence was finally
completed it was time to add some editing techniques (such as black and white, reverse speed
scenes) to give it a more professional finish I did this in Adobe After Effects. After editing the clips I
then Exported them back into Premiere. Once I was satisfied with the final outcome of my project I
then uploaded it onto YouTube.
Throughout the whole production process of my music video I felt as though I enhanced my skills
from last year considerably. I am much more confident of using Adobe Premiere and After Effects as
well as the filming on the camera. Rather than ask my teacher for guided assistance on an effect I
chose to take to YouTube in hope of finding step-by-step guides on how to do the chosen effect I
wanted.
My Music video follows my storyboard relatively well throughout, however I admittedly ‘scrapped’
the idea for one of my scenes and implemented a new idea, in which I had to go back and change my
original storyboard to make it relevant and up to date. My music video meets the target audience’s
needs extremely well. I included popular branding and all people featured in the video are exactly
the same age as my intended audience (18-25) thus making my viewers relate to the video much
more and get more from it than that of say a 30 year old female whom has no knowledge of the
‘drum and bass’ music genre. One thing I didn’t stick to my proposal on was the use of shots I would
be using. I stated I would use mostly mid-low shots, but when it became time to film my FMP I
decided to use many POV shots as after a little more research into other Drum & Bass videos I
noticed that all of them had POV shots in common so I implemented this into my own video.
One flaw I noticed in myself this year was my time management. This year I was instructed to work
individually on this assignment whereas last year we worked in a group, thus the work-load could be
shared equally. I did have a friend help me film but half-way through the assignment I began to
realise I was falling behind compared to peers in my class in which I soon rectified and caught up
again. I think this assignment has boosted my time management skills massively, and has taught me
not to rely on anybody but myself and this is one of the most important skills to learn in order to be
successful in my career choice. If I were to create a music video again I would create a written
schedule whilst considering setback as well as choosing some smaller tasks to do in my own time so
it doesn’t get built up at the end of year enforcing me rush tasks.
I received mixed responses from my music video. Most people thoroughly enjoyed the video and
track and thought they went well together, however a couple of people told me that they enjoyed
the video itself but didn’t like the music track, this is fine as not everybody has the same taste in
music as me but for them to comment on the production of my video being good I took it as good
criticism. I have to point out myself that due to my time management being not up to scratch at the
beginning of the process my video doesn’t include as much effects as I’d have liked it too,
nevertheless I am still happy with the final outcome of the video. All the people whom watched the
video found it humorous which my number one intention throughout the whole assignment was.
From my point of view I believe I made a successful music video suited to my target audience (going
off their feedback). If I were to create another media product again in the future I would most
definitely choose to create a music video as during my time at college this is what I enjoyed doing
the most in my course. It’s an excellent asset to the college for them to be able to give us access to
top quality recording equipment and computer software in order for us to be able to create these
projects to the fullest. Something I could pick up on if I choose to do another music video is to
include the use of both male and female characters rather than just male, as this will open up my
target audience and give me more views.
