Binary compounds are composed of two elements, represented by their chemical symbols. To write the formula, write the symbol of the positively charged element first, then the negatively charged element. Add subscripts to balance the total oxidation state to zero. To name binary compounds, write the name of the first element and add "-ide" to the root of the second element's name. Examples of common binary compounds and their formulas and names are provided.
