The Storm Essay
Debbie wasn t sure if she ever fell asleep or not. She felt lucky just to be able to nod off now and then.
It seemed to be quieter outside. There were still random screams and loud noises from all around, but
it sounded more distant now. It reminded Debbie of a tornado that swept through a few years ago. It
was quiet, then mass destruction, then the sun came out and it was quiet again. The storm came fast,
and in minutes, it was gone. Afterward, when you looked up to the sky, it was beautiful, almost
unassuming. But the storm left its terrible mark; just like now. Doris was awake now. She stood up on
the seat and stared at Debbie. Debbie opened her eyes, and saw Doris s little hands gripping the seat
back. Her chin was propped up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Margo pulled a couple paper towels from a near empty roll that she brought up with them. Thank you,
Judy said as she wiped her mouth. No more booze for you, Dwayne said, as he put his arm around
Judy s shoulders. She moaned again, burying her face into Dwayne s chest. Margo sat up and looked
out to the street. She watched for any kind of movement. Anything, Dwayne asked as he pulled out his
cell phone again. Margo sighed and said, A lot of body s, that s for sure. She jumped a bit as she
ducked down. Dwayne gripped Judy tight as he looked at Margo, who was now eye level with the
wall. What, what is it, he asked urgently. Margo held her hand up to him as she watched. After a few
seconds, she lowered her hand and let out the breath she was holding. Margo grinned then turned to
Dwayne. A dog, she said as her body visibly relaxed. A God damn dog scared the shit outta me.
Dwayne loosened his grip on Judy as he sighed. Dwayne heard the now, all too familiar, All circuits
are busy as he closed his phone. Margo looked over the wall again and said, Other than the dog, I don
t see anything moving at all. Margo sat back down and reached into one of the supply bags. She pulled
out the radio, and raised the antenna. She was about to crawl over to the wire by the door when
Dwayne said, Only for a minute. Those batteries won t last forever. Margo turned to him as she
reached back into the supply bag. She smiled and said, While you were grabbing

Cost and Price

Discussion Questions
1. Suppose the price of coffee beans increases by $0.20 per pound. What is the effect of this raw
material price increase on the demand for roasted coffee? If one pound produces 50 cups of coffee,
would the price of a cup of coffee rising by $0.01? Explain.
Price of the product comes from the production of the goods all the way till it hits the market shelf. So
when the price of the product like coffee increases during the productivity of the product then the end
cost could increase too. Changes of the productivity can increase by changes in technology and human
capital. This allows the production of the products to become better managed by managers because it
can track all the materials that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For companies that lower the price it s okay for them to increase the prices wants the economy is back
to a recovery state. Consumers will not hold it against the company for increases the prices because
they know that when times get tough they will do what they can to help each customer out by
lowering the prices again.
Companies slashing prices to maintain a marker share is okay because they will do what they can to
stay ahead of the competition. Market shares are a part of the company s financial support. When
customers by the shares in a company they are investing in that company for the long haul and hoping
to make some extra money along the way. When they lower prices it draws customers to their
company name because they want to get a better deal then they possible are at the company they at.
On the flip side is that a company lowering their prices could mean that they have increased the price
because they want to get more profits. This could cause concern by customers that the company has
more room to move the price down because they have just increased it over time because they wanted
profits and might not know what the bottom price really is.

Shangri-La Research Paper
Shangri La: a mystical lamasery that serves as either a paradise, prison, or both to those who happen
to stumble across it. Our prevalent belief is in moderation. We inculcate the virtue of avoiding excess
of all kinds (69). Moderation, defined as the avoidance of excess or extremes, especially in one s
behavior or political opinions, is part of the doctrine of Shangri La and plays an important role in the
nearby Valley of the Blue Moon. Moderation is important to Shangri La because it is what enables the
residents to live prolonged lives, keeps the valley safe and harmonious, and allows for deep self
reflection. Father Perrault, the high lama of Shangri La, lived for over three hundred years. Lo Tsen, a

Argument Analysis Paper. Currently, The World Is In...
Argument Analysis Paper Currently, the world is in disagreement over tensions in the Middle East. A
divided country of the Syrian government and rebels has caused horrific acts. Acts that the president
of the United States deemed necessary for military retaliation. That has sparked the debate on if it was
not only justified but ethical to launch tomahawk missiles into war torn parts of Syria. In an article on
the Huffington Post, Dr. Helen Ouyang argues that it was justified and that military intervention is
needed. She uses different forms of arguments to draw comparisons of Syria to other countries around
the world, dissociate the scenario with the past military struggles and offers many reasons why the
benefit will outweigh the cost. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dr. Ouyang uses many value based arguments and with a morally questionable topic, the strategy
makes sense. In paragraph two, Dr. Ouyang states, This is why to me, the issue in question is not
necessarily whether chemical weapons were used, but what the intentions of Assad s regime is, what
has happened thus far to the innocent, and what is likely to happen in the future. She acknowledges
that there is no question that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons so that is not what the
disagreement should be about. In the following paragraph, she speaks about all of the arguments
against military involvement. She ends the paragraph by stating that despite the reasons not to be
involved, she can t turn [her] back on the 110,000 who have died and the six million more who have
fled their homes. By stating the opposing arguments, labeling them as sound, and refuting them by
stating that her moral obligation is more critical, she is using a value based argument. Basically, she
says that although we see that the military involvement may be similar to past failures, our moral
decision is more serious. Later in the article, she even calls to the use of abstract values. She claims
that we should not use military intervention because of the vast reasons many Americans think we
should such as punishing Assad or to send a message. Instead, she says that we should do it for the
lesser known reason to stop the mass killings and crimes

Qualitative amp; Quantitative Research Methods
There are two types of research methods: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research methods
are complex meaningful analyses characterized by processes and meanings that are not measured in
terms of mathematical measurements. Quantitative research however, relies and builds on
mathematical procedures and methods, such as frequency, quality, amount and statistical procedure.
There are unique characteristics which distinguish one research process from the other.
Purpose
The purpose of research is to answer questions by using a predefined set of procedures (Mack,
Woodsong, MacQueen, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because the data obtained by qualitative and quantitative research methods are different, they must be
evaluated differently also.
In order to ensure the quality and establish the trustworthiness of qualitative data, researchers may call
upon their peers to evaluate the narrative in order to determine if there are inconsistencies,
contradictions, or other instances of researcher bias (researcher proving only that which they choose or
anticipate)(Smith amp; Davis, 2010). Additionally, qualitative researchers also indicate the procedures
they used to validate data. This process is called confirmability. In addition to confirmability,
qualitative researchers are also concerned with credibility. Credibility refers to the accuracy of the
study. Because qualitative research is social or human in nature, it is best to allow the subjects of the
study determine accuracy. However, quantitative data is evaluated in a different manner.
In order to ensure that quantitative data is obtained from an acceptable instrument, it is necessary to
determine the validity and reliability of the instrument being used. It is important to minimize
subjectivity in quantitative research. The researcher must ensure that the surveys, questionnaires, and
tests, used are not open for interpretation or the results may be skewed. Researchers can verify the
usefulness of an instrument through validity and reliability. Validity refers to the extent to

Cochlear Implants
90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents (Michell 138 163). 40% of deaf children are exposed
to signed language before school age (Dougherty). Cochlear implants are approved by the FDA for
implantation into children as young as two years old (FDA). A hearing parent with a new deaf child is
faced with choosing between two distinct lifestyles and paths for their children within weeks; oral or
manual. The oral method relies on lip reading, mainstream schools, and nowadays, cochlear implants
or hearing aids. The manual method relies on sign language, residential schools, and accepting
Deafness as a culture worth nurturing. Both methods have their strong suits. Both have their weak
points. But first, a vocabulary lesson. The word deaf ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a linguistic minority that is worth exploring, with a rich and vibrant language. This language
shapes the community. Daniel S. Koo, a member of this community explains that, ASL exposes
children to the world s knowledge, he says, and it incorporates self esteem and aspects of deaf culture
(Bollag 1). Unlike with Julia, Deaf students who are placed in schools for the deaf, which use sign
language as the primary language during classes, Deaf children do not feel isolated or weird for their
inability to hear. Instead of reaching out to other isolated kids, they walk through their schools making
effortless friendships and learning just as hearing kids do. The only difference? The language they use.
Before ASL was accepted as an official language in these schools, many educators and school
prohibited signing and, students had to wear mittens or sit on their hands as a punishment for signing.
Other schools used more severe reprimands (Oral 1). Because of this history, the modern community
strives to create an environment of open communication, where the stories that are told to friends
could be seen as oversharing to hearing people unused to Deaf culture. But this environment creates a
close knit community where everyone seems to know everyone. Some parents, aware of this
closeness, opt to learn ASL themselves and immerse themselves into the Deaf community to be a part
of their child s source of

Justinian And The Byzantine Empire
In 527 AD, Justinian took control of the Byzantine Empire. Although it is currently referred to as the
Byzantine Empire, many citizens and leaders, including Justinian, considered themselves to be Roman
and part of the Roman Empire. This mentality led to the revival of the Roman Empire in Byzantine
and in its capital, Constantinople. During his rule, Justinian led the empire to its greatest size both in
the amount of controlled land and influence over groups in Europe and Asia. He also contributed to
the spread of Christianity both within the Byzantine Empire and without. Finally, Justinian preserved
Roman laws for the Byzantine Empire and other European systems of government. Justinian s
successful emulation and revival of the Roman Empire through his beautification and improvements
on Constantinople and other parts of the Byzantine Empire, strong support of Christianity and role in
its growth as a major religion, and his codification of Byzantine law benefited the Byzantine Empire
and the surrounding regions.
Justinian enhanced Constantinople s status through the preservation of Greco Roman culture and
structures in his building projects, and expanded the Byzantine Empire to heights no other ruler could
reach afterwards, both of which brought glory to the empire and continued the precedent set by the
Western Roman Empire of power and control. Constantinople s buildings were influential in bringing
trade to the city. In a map of Constantinople during Justinian s rule,

Analysis Of Clothes By Chira Banerjee Divakaruni
the short story Clothes by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, the author tells how a young woman, Sumita,
who lives in India, is set up for an arranged marriage; and has to move to America. The author
conveys the concept of American Dream throughout the story. This paper will compare Divakaruni s
concept of American Dream and how it differs from the life Sumita is leaving; to how moving to
another country can change your life in a positive way. Therefore having a chance at certain
opportunities that were not available before, which relates to the article What Moving to Another
Country Taught Me About Life by Sacha Strebe. By showing the concern Sumita had when she
thinking about leaving India, the author reveals how overwhelming it was moving to another country.
Sumita realized if the arranged marriage worked out the way her parents wanted, she would be
moving to America. Sumita did not realize she had a choice to her own destiny; she listened to her
mother and kept the tradition going on, she reports in the text, She had done it, and her mother before
her. A married woman belongs to her husband, her in laws. Hot seeds of tears prickled my eyelids at
the unfairness of it (Divakaruni 1). The thought of moving to another country with someone she barely
knew, scared Sumita. She grew up in India and knew America would be completely different. She did
not know what to expect; her parents or friends were not going with her so she had to experience this
new life with her soon to be husband. As Divakaruni stated, leaving the known for the unknown (1).
Similar to how Sumita immigrated into the U.S, in the article What Moving to Another Country
Taught Me About Life by Sacha Strebe, she claims The idea of leaving my family, our beloved
community of friends, and the familiar surroundings of our cute little neighborhood behind was tough,
and we certainly didn t make the decision lightly (Sacha Strebe). The thought of leaving your
hometown to go to a completely different environment is overwhelming. Saying goodbye to those you
know cannot go with you is devastating, especially if you have to leave that country by yourself or
with a stranger. Although it takes a lot moving to another country, the author portrays

Teen Prescription Drug Abuse Among Teens
Teen Prescription Drug Abuse
Doesn t matter what age, drugs are going to be used and abuse. From the time we are born, till the day
we die, prescription drugs are prescribed for doctor approved use. Most prescription drugs are given to
help control a disease, an imbalance, sickness, etc. With teenage drug abuse on the rise in most US
high schools, it has become a problem parents are facing amongst their children. Being a parent to a
teenager who has meddled with prescription drugs has been an unbelievable eye opener. Teens know
who they get these drugs from; fellow students, friends, their parents cabinets, etc. Educating parents

And they did, for problems with pregnancy, childbirth, menstrual cramps or emotional problems
(History of Prescription Drugs). Drug addiction occurs when a chemical dependency to a drug is
cumulated with an inundating urge to use the substance. It can also pertain to several individual,
family, genetic, and social issues rather than by any one reason. Prescription drugs written by doctors
for their patients are the only ones who are safe to take those prescriptions, that means that no one else
is allowed to consume them. A drug that is safe for one person can be seriously hazardous and
possibly fatal for anyone else. Most teens probably feel they are forced to try these drugs through peer
pressure.
The most immense reason teens start utilizing these drugs is because their friends were pressured
through peer pressure. No one desires to be left out, and teens (and some adults, too) find themselves
trying things they normally wouldn t try, just to fit in with the crowd. In these cases, you either look
for better friends that won t pressure you to do irrational things, or find a reasonable way to say no.
Teens should plan an exit strategy or plan ahead of time, to resist from giving into temptation. These
teens become victims to peer pressure due to the fear of being insulted by making them feel deprived
for not doing something, that they eventually do it. Pressuring them by telling them why they should
do it and the fear of rejection by

The human race wouldn t be where it is today without the evolvement of the brain. But unfortunately,
as astonishing as the brain is, different chemicals released can affect our abilities and choices so easily.
An adrenaline rush is a sudden increase in the secretion of adrenaline from the adrenal glands. This
happens when the brain communicates to the glands that there will be a need for a fight or flight
response. (Brogaard). Serotonin is regarded by some researchers as a chemical that is responsible for
maintaining mood balance, and that a deficit of serotonin leads to depression (McIntosh). Another
influential chemical released to the brain is dopamine. Otherwise known as the reward chemical,
dopamine is the brain s way of making us feel good. Dopamine has the ability to rewire the neurons in
the brain to connect memories or feelings with substances, such as eating something delicious. The
spontaneous neural activity of dopamine neurons is greater in adolescents than juveniles or adults
(Sturman and Bita). This translates to teenagers having a higher tendency to get addicted to the release
of dopamine through examples of enjoyment such as eating, drugs, and, of course, pornography. The
brain gets overwhelmed by the constant overload of dopamine, and it fights back by taking away some
of the dopamine receptors. With fewer receptors and the same levels of pornography releasing the
constant levels of dopamine, viewers (especially adolescents) don t get as excited and tend to go
looking for more hardcore pornography for stronger releases of the reward complex. As another side
affect, regular activities that would usually cause healthy releases of dopamine, such as laughing or
seeing a loved one, don t have the same reward release and make the addicted user unhappy or uneasy
whenever they go for awhile without seeing pornography. (Fight the New Drug). It might be hard to

Toyota s Management Structure Functional Integration
One of Toyota s issues was their lack of organizational culture, perceived or real. Thus, organizational
culture is the shared values that are accepted by members of the organization (Bethel, 2016).
Unfortunately, Toyota s corporate culture was one of total secrecy, which left many feeling there was
something amiss. Further, corporate arrogance, complacency, and company insular nature were
evident (Parnell, 2014, p. 603). Additionally, newly appointed CEO Akio Toyoda was invisible, which
created contention amongst others in leadership. There seemed to be a belief that family members
were focused on safety, while non family members were focused on profits (Parnell, 2014).
Likewise, Toyota s management structure lacked functional integration because the functional
operating areas reported directly to Japan. Basically, it was top down management structure, which
may have led to several of the key issues, which were:
High growth trajectory
Corporate culture
Poor leadership
Management structure
Failure to own mistakes
Focus on cost cutting
Pressure on suppliers to reduce costs (Parnell, 2014).
Clearly, Toyota was in the automobile manufacturing industry and had been for many years. Hence
their key competitors included: Honda, General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Kia, Hyundai, Mercedes

Example Of The Unsung Heros
Some people view a hero as a man that saves a child from a burning building, or a man that stops the
robber at the bank. Although they re not wrong a hero can be much more, most heros go unheard of
and are not rewarded. On the other hand some heros do get noticed for their courageous acts and are
rewarded with a medal or other objects that signified they have helped the world. The hero s I want to

determined, and a brave ordinary person.
Ever seen a hero sacrifice himself for others, if so this is probably a hero like John roberts who put his
life on the line for the greater good. This section of hero usually results in the death of one man to
save many. This example from Listverse.com about 1st Lieutenant John Robert in WW2 shows just
that. Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient and Prince look a like 1st Lieutenant John Robert Fox

threat to his men, Fox called a final artillery strike on himself. When his men eventually retook the
position, Fox s body was found next to approximately 100 dead German troops and a medal was
placed neatly on his chest. This is truly moving who knows if he didn t sacrifice himself it could have

states. The issue of the war was on slavery and power divided between the states. The south had little
chance to win because the north had more man than the south. Slavery was becoming common on the

Britain could no longer assume that the market is there. This impacted the Confederation because they

British was benefiting too much. In 1866 American cancelled the Reciprocity but quickly put it back

Re:
Personal reflection of Technical Writing memo While thinking back over the past weeks and
reviewing my assignments, activities and instructor feedback, I am confident I have gained knowledge
that will be beneficial to me in both my continued education as well as my professional career.
Enrolling in this class I was unclear as to what to expect, but within the first weekly assignment I
could understand the benefits it would bring to my current endeavors. As the class progressed, I found
myself both grateful and devastated for the learning opportunities. As learning opportunities always
provide opportunities to improve, please allow me to expand on each. Perhaps my biggest take from
this course was the need to research my documents to prevent unintended plagiarism. I was raised to
not lie, steal or cheat as the most important values one can possess. With these values in place, other
principles will fall into place. Plagiarism, in my definition, is the combination of all three values in
one. Gurak and Lannon list four key principals to avoid unintentional plagiarism including identify
sources, taking accurate notes, understanding how to include the information, and how to document
the use of sources (Gurak Lannon, 2016, p. 406). In completing my assignments I fully considered my
work meeting the requirements and avoiding any inference of plagiarism. With that said, I was wrong.

How Did World War 1 Impact The Labor Movement In The...
Describe the impact of World War I on the Labor Movement in the United States. Describe at least
three aspects of this period that affected union activity. Be sure to give reasons and examples to back
up any claims made. The first seeds of the union movement in the United States can be traced back to
a few decades before the World War I. The economy of the country was slowly turning capitalist and
the affluent society gaining a strong hold in key decisions regarding employment in established
businesses across the States. This had resulted in the emergence of political groups (Organized Labor
World war, 2007)which were predominantly leftist or socialist in their orientation. Some of them
included organizations like the Socialist Party and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). These
movements gained popularity amongst the lower classes of society through the messages that they
consciously trickled down the lines about their objective of creating a democratic society which would
be controlled by the working class which would not have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However Gompers shared President Wilson s concern as Germany began their submarine invasion
about the possibility of German supremacy. This resulted in the AFL changing their stand diabolically
and the anti war sentiments soon shifted to being pro war. Gompers also saw an opportunity for the
labor movement in supporting the war and he was proved right as he was appointed to the Council of
National Defense, an organization that helped the country prepare for the war. Gompers formed alabor
subcommittee within the council that created a panel of representatives from business, labor, and the
government research into strategies for better industrial coordination and to draw up guidelines on
wages, hours, and mediation in war related industries. This can be seen as the framework upon which
the labor movement in the country has been built

The Murder Of Lavender-Personal Narrative
It was a weird feeling, looking at the gravestone of her deceased best friend, clutching the beloved hair
bow that she used to wear all the time. Before she died, that is.
Parvati bit her lip, not quite knowing what to say or what to do. She came here to give Lavender back
whatever she left behind after the Battle, but there was a sudden force that was holding the Indian girl
from simply placing the bow on the tombstone and leaving quietly.
She shouldn t have died, a little voice in her head nudged Parvati. You should ve helped her; you
shouldn t have let her die this young, it said.
It was true; Parvati should have been of greater help for her best friend. She had been at the wrong
place at the wrong time, however, she couldn t help but feel disappointed in herself. There was so
much she had wanted to tell her; there was so much she had planned on doing with her. Now that she
was gone, though, she couldn t help but feel like it was all her fault. ... Show more content on

memories she didn t want to relive, especially not then.
She regretted not being there for Lavender in her last moments, for being too distracted to help her
maybe the moral support wouldn t have helped her, but at least she could ve said that she tried. It was
something she knew she had no chance of redeeming now, but she couldn t help but feel a peculiar
stabbing pain in her chest at the thought of not being able to turn back time.
Parvati laid the bow down on the cold hard stone. There wasn t much more to add, however she
looked at it.
It was probably for the better if she sealed it all up in the far end of her mind. Maybe it would make

Essay On Aboriginal People And Hunger
Introduction In 2011, Canada was ranked 9th in the Human Development Index (HDI) and is one of
the most developed countries in the world, yet over half of their Indigenous population lives in
poverty and suffers from hunger. There are approximately 1.4 million Aboriginal persons in Canada
according to a 2011 report by Statistics Canada. A large amount of people speculate why there are so
many people suffering in such a highly developed country. The causes of Aboriginal suffering and
hunger are believed to be the lack of education and health issues that then lead to the primary cause of
hunger which is poverty. Educational Issues Lack of educational resources in Indigenous communities

CBC News reported an article stating that the average annual salary for half the Aboriginal population
was near $20,000 whereas annual food costs for a year is just above $19,000. Queen s Native Student
Association illustrates the cost of certain food items in northern Indigenous communities in Canada
such as the following items; a 24 water bottle pack of $105, a $35 bag of flour, and peppers costing
over $17. These prices are caused by some of the geographical positions of certain communities such
as Nunavut, as it is very expensive to transport. With these numbers, it is an obvious reason why food
is unaffordable and people cannot provide meat for their large families and themselves as individuals.
As a result, 64% of Food Bank users are Indigenous persons (CFTC 2014), a large portion of them
being children. Over half of the users are Indigenous even though they only account for 4% of Canada
s total population. As shown by Amber Hildebrandt on CBC, children suffer the most from hunger;
around 70% feel that food insecurity is a very big part of their lives (Nunavut Inuit Child Survey, 2007
08). In present day Canada, CBC News reported that there are now more than half of the First Nation
children officially living in poverty. Governments could provide more services and programs that
would diminish these shocking

Narrative Essay On Battle Ground
Breaking 7:00 On the Mile
I sat in the front seat of our van with a nervous feeling. I was going to run the 1600 at the second
Battle Ground middle school track meet. Exactly a week before I had run the mile 2 times in one day.
The first time was on the Amboy track with the big hill. I got a 7:53, breaking my record by 11
seconds for the Amboy track. The second time was at the first Battle Ground middle school track
meet. I got a 7:15, breaking my record of 7:33. I was all sore from running the mile earlier in the day.
So my goal this time was to break seven minutes
.
I looked at my watch. It was 4:45. Do you have a schedule for each event? asked my mom.
Yes, I replied, and pulled out the sheet. I was starting the race at 5:15.

where they did the high jump.
Come on Kelvin, my cousin shouted. He was from Tukes and was running in the meet to. I ran past
the stands entering my third lap. 1 lap, wait, 2 laps. I started picking up speed. I looked behind me
curly brown kid was about 15 meters behind me. I slowed down a little as I rounded the second curve.
Let s go Kelvin! my mom shouted from the bleachers. I was getting tired. I breathed a little harder as I
ran.
Only 1 lap, I thought as I crossed the line. I started moving faster. I could feel the little rubber bits on
the track as I ran along. I ran around the last curve of the race.
Come on Kelvin! shouted my mom from where she was sitting. But I couldn t sprint, all I could do
was run. I crossed the line for the last time. Another person from the high school track handed me a
little paper with a 9. I had got 9th place. I was so tired that I dropped the piece of paper, I leaned over
and got it. I handed the paper to a person with a clipboard and made my way up to my mom.
She was smiling. What did I get? I asked.

The Importance Of Student Behaviors And The Classroom...
Educators have the opportunity to make a great impact on students, however with this opportunity
comes many challenges in terms of students behaviours and the classroom environment. The DECD
(Department for Education and Child Development) states that children and students with a disability
or special needs must be given the same opportunities for education as other children and students. It
is therefore important, that educators understand the reasons behind students behaviours, both positive
and negative, to be able to create a positive, safe and rigorous learning environment (Efrati‐Virtzer
Margalit, 2009). According to Beaman, Wheldall Kemp (2007), the majority of students with
emotional and behavioural difficulties are taught in mainstream classrooms highlighting the
significance of effective classroom behaviour management. Whilst a significant minority of a class
may present with challenging or disruptive behaviours, it still impacts teachers ability to create an
effective learning environment (Beaman, Wheldall Kemp, 2007). According to a recent report by the
South Australian parliament, teachers have a lack of knowledge regarding challenging student
behaviours (Parliament of South Australia, 2010). Teachers also have a greater lack of knowledge
regarding students who also have a disability (e.g. ADHD or Autism) which often leads to these
children becoming withdrawn, disengaged, socially isolated from their peers or they do not participate
in class (Parliament

The Dehumanization Of Women In Joseph Heller s Catch-22
During the early 1900 s up until recent history, women have been treated through the lenses of men.
Heller s satirical Catch 22 tries to clean this lense, by overly showing the dehumanization of women.
Through sex, and objectification, Heller is able to point out the problems in our own society. At the
end of the novel, Heller contrasts these persistent themes with the men s humanity, and he is able to
make us want change in our society. Through prostitution, and the general use of women for sex,
Heller paints a vivid reflection of society. The maid with the lime panties is one of Heller s most
obvious commentaries. Her entire role in the book is to be of service to the men. Her allure stemmed
from her accessibility; like Mt. Everest, she was there, and the men climbed on top of her each time
they felt the urge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Besides the objectification that comes with prostitution, Heller finds more clever ways to subliminally
push this on us. Everybody falls in love, it is human nature, but when Nately falls in love with his
acquaintance he is made to look like a fool. People do not really understand how he could fall in love
with someone who to them is an object. Captain Black even pays for sex with her just out of spite for
Nately. At the end of the novel we see that Nately s girlfriend is more than just an object, and even
capable of love. Most readers don t catch this, but Heller makes her human to show that these women
have more to them. The reader only gets a glimpse of these women, and from the perspective of men
at war. Heller makes Nately s girlfriend a person at the end of the novel to show the reader that behind
her job, she is a real person. Another low key way in which Heller portrays his message is with the use
of names. Heller keeps almost all of the women in Rome nameless because it portrays that they are not

An Overview and Commentary on Course Objectives Essay
Note to the reader: This essay is somewhat of an experiment. I am well aware of the standard
guidelines within which a student must present and argue ideas, and the implications of
nonconformity. However, if I have learned anything in this course, it is that genres and forms are
continually under scrutiny, being molded and changed, discarded and exchanged, for sake of efficacy,
veracity, adherence to ideology, or in reaction to otherwise unforeseen forces. Consider this as just
such a reaction; more accurately, it is my only recourse. In setting out to write this essay, I had a clear
objective. My task was to critically engage materials that were covered this term, and where possible
reflect, compare, contrast, and analyze those theories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a contemporary sense, there is an involvement between the reader and the text. This denies the
Formalist stance that the text is the sole source of meaning. Proponents of this theory fall onto a
spectrum, where at one pole the interpretive strategy of the reader entirely determines the text (Stanley
Fish), at the other pole is what falls into the realm of Formalism (text dominant), and in between is a
bi active stance, where the reader is both active and passive during the reading process (Wolfgang
Iser). Iser talks of an actual reader and an implied reader. The actual reader is one who brings to the
text all their knowledge and experience, what Barthes would term their déjà lu. The implied reader is
one which text itself attempts to shape or condition. For Iser, the reading process is one which is
gradually unfolding. The reader assimilates various facets of the text, and through this process dictates
(in part) the essence of the text. However, unlike some of Fish s earlier works where the reader is
effectively in creative control, Iser states the text imposes some constraints upon the reader. The
reader cannot make the text mean what they like, as the text provides a skeleton of meanings, norms,
and values that shape and control the reader s response. Thus, the convergence of text and reader
brings the literary work into existence (Iser 189). He goes on further to state that the text provokes
certain expectations which in

Heidi Daub The Celtic Cross
Out of all the pieces that were a part of Heidi Daub s collection, this was the piece that kept drawing
me back. At first you couldn t see it, because there was the viewing screen in front of it, and then
when the screen was taken down, this canvas was behind it, and it honestly blew me away. The first
thing that my eye went to was the infinity symbol that was painted in blue. In my senior year, I studied
about the Celtics, and in my studies, I learned about The Celtic Cross. The Cross was quite literally a
cross and in the middle of it, there was a circle. It is said that the Celtics believed it to mean that there
was a passageway between heaven and earth. The Cross was thought to be based off of the infinity
symbol, representing spiritual

Sierra Leone Civil War
Introduction
Approximately 5,000 children aged 7 to 18 were conscripted into the civil war in Sierra Leone. During
the civil war, between 215,000 and 257,000 Sierra Leonean women and girls were subjected to sexual
violence. The Special Court for Sierra Leone addressed some critical issues in the areas of sexual and
gendered violence, including forced marriage, and child soldiers which were essential in reforming
international law. This essay will cover significant articles in the Statute of the Special Court for Sierra
Leone, provide a brief history of the civil war in Sierra Leone, and discuss the jurisdiction of the
Special Court. It will then highlight The Special Court s achievements in the areas of sexual and

This indicates that The Special Court for Sierra Leone is an ad hoc court meaning that the court was
established in response to particular events that took place in Sierra Leone since a specific date
(November 30, 1996). The Special Court can further be classified a hybrid ad hoc court because the
judges, prosecution, and the defence counsel are a blend of citizens of the State where the crimes took
place and the international community. This is also outlined in articles 12 and 15 of the Statute. 13
persons were indicted by The Special Court for Sierra Leone between March and September 2003.
However, only nine were in custody as one was dead, one was at large, and two indictments were
withdrawn. Some of the cases that were before The Special Court include: The Prosecutor v Sam
Hinga Norman, Moinina Fofana and Allieu Kondewa (The CDF), The Prosecutor v Issa Hassan Sesay,
Morris Kallon and Augustine Gbao (The RUF), The Prosecutor v Alex Tamba Brima, Ibrahim Bazzy
Kamara and Santigie Borbor Kanu (The AFRC), and The Prosecutor v Charles Ghankay Taylor. The
first judgment was given on June 20, 2007, in relation to the AFRC trial. The three accused were

Mountain Men from the North American Rock Mountains
Mountain men were most common in the North American Rocky Mountains from about 1810 through
the 1880s (with a peak population in the early 1840s). Approximately 3,000 mountain men ranged the
mountains between 1820 and 1840, the peak beaver harvesting period. While there were many free
trappers, most mountain men were employed by major fur companies. The life of a company man was
almost militarized. The men had mess groups, hunted and trapped inbrigades and always reported to
the head of the trapping party. This man was called a boosway , a bastardization of the French term
bourgeoisie. He was the leader of the brigade and the head trader.
Donald Mackenzie, representing the North West Company, held a Rendezvous in the Boise
RiverValley in 1819.[2] The rendezvous system was later implemented by William Henry Ashley of
theRocky Mountain Fur Company, whose company representatives would haul supplies to specific
mountain locations in the spring, engage in trading with trappers, and bring pelts back to communities
on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers in the fall. Ashley sold his business to the outfit of Jackson and
Sublette. He continued to earn revenue by selling that firm their supplies. This system of rendezvous
with trappers continued when other firms, particularly the American Fur Company owned by John
Jacob Astor, entered the field.
The annual rendezvous was often held at Horse Creek on the Green River, now called the Upper
Green River Rendezvous Site, near present day

How The Great Peloponnesian War Changed Greek Civilization
The Great Peloponnesian War was an extensive and devastating war that significantly changed Greek
civilization. It began in a distant, insignificant area in Greece at Epidamnus, a Corcyraean colony on
the Adriatic Sea, with a civil war between Corcyra and Corinth, which dragged both Athens and
Sparta into the quarrel. Athens made alliances with Corcyra due to it having the second largest navy
next to Athens. Sparta was an ally of Corinth. The Spartans refused to arbitrate, declared war, and sent
their armies to the Athenian homeland of Attica in 431 B.C.E. The Great Peloponnesian War paved the
way for the takeover of Greece. Previously, Greece worked together to fight against outside enemies,
but during the Great Peloponnesian war, Greek city states

Douglass And Rousseau Summary
P1: Intro Rousseau, Emerson, and Douglass all agree that freedom is a natural right endowed to all
humans naturally. However the three authors diverge in consensus when envisioning the qualities
required of a good citizen, such as the moral implications of slavery, the need for civil disobedience, a
citizen s obligation to the state, and the position from which each author is theorizing.
Thesis: Douglass s view for a good democratic citizen is superior, because Douglass s position as a
free black man in society allows him to present arguments that intersect a humans naturally endowed
freedoms with the concepts of inequality, race, and marginalization within the context of the law.
P2: On the Laws of Nature = Natural Equality

Emerson: Citizens are only obliged to refuse an unjust law if the law directly affects them on a
personal level. (i.e. the Fugitive slave law personally affects him in the north whereas, slavery, which

b. Douglass: Good citizens are obliged to engage in civil disobedience if a law is unjust, just as legal
slavery, regardless if it affects or does not affect their private interests (i.e. the founding fathers
fighting for freedom against the British)
c. Rousseau: Good citizens are equally committed to both the state and their fellow citizens. The act of
association consists of a reciprocal commitment between society and the individual, [man] finds
himself doubly committed, first, as a member of a sovereign body in relation to individuals, and
secondly as a member of the state in relation to the sovereign (62). HOWEVER: for every individual

aspect but the color to stress on the fact that it is just as good and tasty as Coca Cola, but lighter (that s

  • 2. The Storm Essay Debbie wasn t sure if she ever fell asleep or not. She felt lucky just to be able to nod off now and then. It seemed to be quieter outside. There were still random screams and loud noises from all around, but it sounded more distant now. It reminded Debbie of a tornado that swept through a few years ago. It was quiet, then mass destruction, then the sun came out and it was quiet again. The storm came fast, and in minutes, it was gone. Afterward, when you looked up to the sky, it was beautiful, almost unassuming. But the storm left its terrible mark; just like now. Doris was awake now. She stood up on the seat and stared at Debbie. Debbie opened her eyes, and saw Doris s little hands gripping the seat back. Her chin was propped up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Margo pulled a couple paper towels from a near empty roll that she brought up with them. Thank you, Judy said as she wiped her mouth. No more booze for you, Dwayne said, as he put his arm around Judy s shoulders. She moaned again, burying her face into Dwayne s chest. Margo sat up and looked out to the street. She watched for any kind of movement. Anything, Dwayne asked as he pulled out his cell phone again. Margo sighed and said, A lot of body s, that s for sure. She jumped a bit as she ducked down. Dwayne gripped Judy tight as he looked at Margo, who was now eye level with the wall. What, what is it, he asked urgently. Margo held her hand up to him as she watched. After a few seconds, she lowered her hand and let out the breath she was holding. Margo grinned then turned to Dwayne. A dog, she said as her body visibly relaxed. A God damn dog scared the shit outta me. Dwayne loosened his grip on Judy as he sighed. Dwayne heard the now, all too familiar, All circuits are busy as he closed his phone. Margo looked over the wall again and said, Other than the dog, I don t see anything moving at all. Margo sat back down and reached into one of the supply bags. She pulled out the radio, and raised the antenna. She was about to crawl over to the wire by the door when Dwayne said, Only for a minute. Those batteries won t last forever. A divided country of the Syrian government and rebels has caused horrific acts. Acts that the president of the United States deemed necessary for military retaliation. That has sparked the debate on if it was not only justified but ethical to launch tomahawk missiles into war torn parts of Syria. In an article on the Huffington Post, Dr. Helen Ouyang argues that it was justified and that military intervention is needed. She uses different forms of arguments to draw comparisons of Syria to other countries around the world, dissociate the scenario with the past military struggles and offers many reasons why the benefit will outweigh the cost. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dr. Ouyang uses many value based arguments and with a morally questionable topic, the strategy makes sense. In paragraph two, Dr. Ouyang states, This is why to me, the issue in question is not necessarily whether chemical weapons were used, but what the intentions of Assad s regime is, what has happened thus far to the innocent, and what is likely to happen in the future. She acknowledges that there is no question that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons so that is not what the disagreement should be about. In the following paragraph, she speaks about all of the arguments against military involvement. She ends the paragraph by stating that despite the reasons not to be involved, she can t turn [her] back on the 110,000 who have died and the six million more who have fled their homes. By stating the opposing arguments, labeling them as sound, and refuting them by stating that her moral obligation is more critical, she is using a value based argument. Basically, she says that although we see that the military involvement may be similar to past failures, our moral decision is more serious. Later in the article, she even calls to the use of abstract values. She claims that we should not use military intervention because of the vast reasons many Americans think we should such as punishing Assad or to send a message. Instead, she says that we should do it for the lesser known reason to stop the mass killings and crimes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Qualitative Quantitative Research Methods Qualitative amp; Quantitative Research Methods PSY 326 Dr. Willow Aureala March 29, 2011 Qualitative amp; Quantitative Research Methods There are two types of research methods: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research methods are complex meaningful analyses characterized by processes and meanings that are not measured in terms of mathematical measurements. Quantitative research however, relies and builds on mathematical procedures and methods, such as frequency, quality, amount and statistical procedure. In order to ensure the quality and establish the trustworthiness of qualitative data, researchers may call upon their peers to evaluate the narrative in order to determine if there are inconsistencies, contradictions, or other instances of researcher bias (researcher proving only that which they choose or anticipate)(Smith amp; Davis, 2010). Additionally, qualitative researchers also indicate the procedures they used to validate data. This process is called confirmability. In addition to confirmability, qualitative researchers are also concerned with credibility. Credibility refers to the accuracy of the study. Because qualitative research is social or human in nature, it is best to allow the subjects of the study determine accuracy. However, quantitative data is evaluated in a different manner. Cochlear implants are approved by the FDA for implantation into children as young as two years old (FDA). A hearing parent with a new deaf child is faced with choosing between two distinct lifestyles and paths for their children within weeks; oral or manual. The oral method relies on lip reading, mainstream schools, and nowadays, cochlear implants or hearing aids. This language shapes the community. Daniel S. Koo, a member of this community explains that, ASL exposes children to the world s knowledge, he says, and it incorporates self esteem and aspects of deaf culture (Bollag 1). Unlike with Julia, Deaf students who are placed in schools for the deaf, which use sign language as the primary language during classes, Deaf children do not feel isolated or weird for their inability to hear. Instead of reaching out to other isolated kids, they walk through their schools making effortless friendships and learning just as hearing kids do. The only difference? The language they use. Before ASL was accepted as an official language in these schools, many educators and school prohibited signing and, students had to wear mittens or sit on their hands as a punishment for signing. Other schools used more severe reprimands (Oral 1). Because of this history, the modern community strives to create an environment of open communication, where the stories that are told to friends could be seen as oversharing to hearing people unused to Deaf culture. But this environment creates a close knit community where everyone seems to know everyone. Some parents, aware of this closeness, opt to learn ASL themselves and immerse themselves into the Deaf community to be a part of their child s source of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although it is currently referred to as the Byzantine Empire, many citizens and leaders, including Justinian, considered themselves to be Roman and part of the Roman Empire. This mentality led to the revival of the Roman Empire in Byzantine and in its capital, Constantinople. During his rule, Justinian led the empire to its greatest size both in the amount of controlled land and influence over groups in Europe and Asia. He also contributed to the spread of Christianity both within the Byzantine Empire and without. Finally, Justinian preserved Roman laws for the Byzantine Empire and other European systems of government. Justinian s successful emulation and revival of the Roman Empire through his beautification and improvements on Constantinople and other parts of the Byzantine Empire, strong support of Christianity and role in its growth as a major religion, and his codification of Byzantine law benefited the Byzantine Empire and the surrounding regions. Justinian enhanced Constantinople s status through the preservation of Greco Roman culture and structures in his building projects, and expanded the Byzantine Empire to heights no other ruler could reach afterwards, both of which brought glory to the empire and continued the precedent set by the Western Roman Empire of power and control. Sumita realized if the arranged marriage worked out the way her parents wanted, she would be moving to America. Sumita did not realize she had a choice to her own destiny; she listened to her mother and kept the tradition going on, she reports in the text, She had done it, and her mother before her. A married woman belongs to her husband, her in laws. Hot seeds of tears prickled my eyelids at the unfairness of it (Divakaruni 1). The thought of moving to another country with someone she barely knew, scared Sumita. She grew up in India and knew America would be completely different. She did not know what to expect; her parents or friends were not going with her so she had to experience this new life with her soon to be husband. As Divakaruni stated, leaving the known for the unknown (1). Similar to how Sumita immigrated into the U.S, in the article What Moving to Another Country Taught Me About Life by Sacha Strebe, she claims The idea of leaving my family, our beloved community of friends, and the familiar surroundings of our cute little neighborhood behind was tough, and we certainly didn t make the decision lightly (Sacha Strebe). Drug addiction occurs when a chemical dependency to a drug is cumulated with an inundating urge to use the substance. It can also pertain to several individual, family, genetic, and social issues rather than by any one reason. Prescription drugs written by doctors for their patients are the only ones who are safe to take those prescriptions, that means that no one else is allowed to consume them. A drug that is safe for one person can be seriously hazardous and possibly fatal for anyone else. Most teens probably feel they are forced to try these drugs through peer pressure. The most immense reason teens start utilizing these drugs is because their friends were pressured through peer pressure. No one desires to be left out, and teens (and some adults, too) find themselves trying things they normally wouldn t try, just to fit in with the crowd. In these cases, you either look for better friends that won t pressure you to do irrational things, or find a reasonable way to say no. Teens should plan an exit strategy or plan ahead of time, to resist from giving into temptation. These teens become victims to peer pressure due to the fear of being insulted by making them feel deprived for not doing something, that they eventually do it. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The human race wouldn t be where it is today without the evolvement of the brain. But unfortunately, as astonishing as the brain is, different chemicals released can affect our abilities and choices so easily. An adrenaline rush is a sudden increase in the secretion of adrenaline from the adrenal glands. This happens when the brain communicates to the glands that there will be a need for a fight or flight response. (Brogaard). Serotonin is regarded by some researchers as a chemical that is responsible for maintaining mood balance, and that a deficit of serotonin leads to depression (McIntosh). Another influential chemical released to the brain is dopamine. Otherwise known as the reward chemical, dopamine is the brain s way of making us feel good. Dopamine has the ability to rewire the neurons in the brain to connect memories or feelings with substances, such as eating something delicious. The spontaneous neural activity of dopamine neurons is greater in adolescents than juveniles or adults (Sturman and Bita). This translates to teenagers having a higher tendency to get addicted to the release of dopamine through examples of enjoyment such as eating, drugs, and, of course, pornography. The brain gets overwhelmed by the constant overload of dopamine, and it fights back by taking away some of the dopamine receptors. With fewer receptors and the same levels of pornography releasing the constant levels of dopamine, viewers (especially adolescents) don t get as excited and tend to go looking for more hardcore pornography for stronger releases of the reward complex. As another side affect, regular activities that would usually cause healthy releases of dopamine, such as laughing or seeing a loved one, don t have the same reward release and make the addicted user unhappy or uneasy whenever they go for awhile without seeing pornography. • 26. The Importance Of Student Behaviors And The Classroom... Educators have the opportunity to make a great impact on students, however with this opportunity comes many challenges in terms of students behaviours and the classroom environment. The DECD (Department for Education and Child Development) states that children and students with a disability or special needs must be given the same opportunities for education as other children and students. It is therefore important, that educators understand the reasons behind students behaviours, both positive and negative, to be able to create a positive, safe and rigorous learning environment (Efrati‐Virtzer Margalit, 2009). According to Beaman, Wheldall Kemp (2007), the majority of students with emotional and behavioural difficulties are taught in mainstream classrooms highlighting the significance of effective classroom behaviour management. Whilst a significant minority of a class may present with challenging or disruptive behaviours, it still impacts teachers ability to create an effective learning environment (Beaman, Wheldall Kemp, 2007). According to a recent report by the South Australian parliament, teachers have a lack of knowledge regarding challenging student behaviours (Parliament of South Australia, 2010). Teachers also have a greater lack of knowledge regarding students who also have a disability (e.g. ADHD or Autism) which often leads to these children becoming withdrawn, disengaged, socially isolated from their peers or they do not participate in class (Parliament ... Heller s satirical Catch 22 tries to clean this lense, by overly showing the dehumanization of women. Through sex, and objectification, Heller is able to point out the problems in our own society. At the end of the novel, Heller contrasts these persistent themes with the men s humanity, and he is able to make us want change in our society. Through prostitution, and the general use of women for sex, Heller paints a vivid reflection of society. The maid with the lime panties is one of Heller s most obvious commentaries. Her entire role in the book is to be of service to the men. Her allure stemmed from her accessibility; like Mt. • 28. An Overview and Commentary on Course Objectives Essay Note to the reader: This essay is somewhat of an experiment. I am well aware of the standard guidelines within which a student must present and argue ideas, and the implications of nonconformity. However, if I have learned anything in this course, it is that genres and forms are continually under scrutiny, being molded and changed, discarded and exchanged, for sake of efficacy, veracity, adherence to ideology, or in reaction to otherwise unforeseen forces. Consider this as just such a reaction; more accurately, it is my only recourse. In setting out to write this essay, I had a clear objective. My task was to critically engage materials that were covered this term, and where possible reflect, compare, contrast, and analyze those theories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a contemporary sense, there is an involvement between the reader and the text. This denies the Formalist stance that the text is the sole source of meaning. Proponents of this theory fall onto a spectrum, where at one pole the interpretive strategy of the reader entirely determines the text (Stanley Fish), at the other pole is what falls into the realm of Formalism (text dominant), and in between is a bi active stance, where the reader is both active and passive during the reading process (Wolfgang Iser). Iser talks of an actual reader and an implied reader. The actual reader is one who brings to the text all their knowledge and experience, what Barthes would term their déjà lu. The implied reader is one which text itself attempts to shape or condition. For Iser, the reading process is one which is gradually unfolding. The reader assimilates various facets of the text, and through this process dictates (in part) the essence of the text. However, unlike some of Fish s earlier works where the reader is effectively in creative control, Iser states the text imposes some constraints upon the reader. The reader cannot make the text mean what they like, as the text provides a skeleton of meanings, norms, and values that shape and control the reader s response. Thus, the convergence of text and reader brings the literary work into existence (Iser 189). He goes on further to state that the text provokes certain expectations which in ... • 29. Heidi Daub The Celtic Cross Out of all the pieces that were a part of Heidi Daub s collection, this was the piece that kept drawing me back. At first you couldn t see it, because there was the viewing screen in front of it, and then when the screen was taken down, this canvas was behind it, and it honestly blew me away. The first thing that my eye went to was the infinity symbol that was painted in blue. In my senior year, I studied about the Celtics, and in my studies, I learned about The Celtic Cross. The Cross was quite literally a cross and in the middle of it, there was a circle. It is said that the Celtics believed it to mean that there was a passageway between heaven and earth. The Cross was thought to be based off of the infinity symbol, representing spiritual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Sierra Leone Civil War Introduction Approximately 5,000 children aged 7 to 18 were conscripted into the civil war in Sierra Leone. During the civil war, between 215,000 and 257,000 Sierra Leonean women and girls were subjected to sexual violence. This indicates that The Special Court for Sierra Leone is an ad hoc court meaning that the court was established in response to particular events that took place in Sierra Leone since a specific date (November 30, 1996). The Special Court can further be classified a hybrid ad hoc court because the judges, prosecution, and the defence counsel are a blend of citizens of the State where the crimes took place and the international community. This is also outlined in articles 12 and 15 of the Statute. 13 persons were indicted by The Special Court for Sierra Leone between March and September 2003. However, only nine were in custody as one was dead, one was at large, and two indictments were withdrawn. Some of the cases that were before The Special Court include: The Prosecutor v Sam Hinga Norman, Moinina Fofana and Allieu Kondewa (The CDF), The Prosecutor v Issa Hassan Sesay, Morris Kallon and Augustine Gbao (The RUF), The Prosecutor v Alex Tamba Brima, Ibrahim Bazzy Kamara and Santigie Borbor Kanu (The AFRC), and The Prosecutor v Charles Ghankay Taylor. The first judgment was given on June 20, 2007, in relation to the AFRC trial. The three accused were convicted of 11 out of the 14 counts on the indictment. • 31. Mountain Men from the North American Rock Mountains Mountain men were most common in the North American Rocky Mountains from about 1810 through the 1880s (with a peak population in the early 1840s). Approximately 3,000 mountain men ranged the mountains between 1820 and 1840, the peak beaver harvesting period. While there were many free trappers, most mountain men were employed by major fur companies. The life of a company man was almost militarized. The men had mess groups, hunted and trapped inbrigades and always reported to the head of the trapping party. This man was called a boosway , a bastardization of the French term bourgeoisie. He was the leader of the brigade and the head trader. Donald Mackenzie, representing the North West Company, held a Rendezvous in the Boise RiverValley in 1819.[2] The rendezvous system was later implemented by William Henry Ashley of theRocky Mountain Fur Company, whose company representatives would haul supplies to specific mountain locations in the spring, engage in trading with trappers, and bring pelts back to communities on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers in the fall. Ashley sold his business to the outfit of Jackson and Sublette. He continued to earn revenue by selling that firm their supplies. This system of rendezvous with trappers continued when other firms, particularly the American Fur Company owned by John Jacob Astor, entered the field. The annual rendezvous was often held at Horse Creek on the Green River, now called the Upper Green River Rendezvous Site, near present day ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. How The Great Peloponnesian War Changed Greek Civilization The Great Peloponnesian War was an extensive and devastating war that significantly changed Greek civilization. It began in a distant, insignificant area in Greece at Epidamnus, a Corcyraean colony on the Adriatic Sea, with a civil war between Corcyra and Corinth, which dragged both Athens and Sparta into the quarrel. Athens made alliances with Corcyra due to it having the second largest navy next to Athens. Sparta was an ally of Corinth. The Spartans refused to arbitrate, declared war, and sent their armies to the Athenian homeland of Attica in 431 B.C.E. The Great Peloponnesian War paved the way for the takeover of Greece. Previously, Greece worked together to fight against outside enemies, but during the Great Peloponnesian war, Greek city states ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Douglass And Rousseau Summary P1: Intro Rousseau, Emerson, and Douglass all agree that freedom is a natural right endowed to all humans naturally. However the three authors diverge in consensus when envisioning the qualities required of a good citizen, such as the moral implications of slavery, the need for civil disobedience, a citizen s obligation to the state, and the position from which each author is theorizing. Thesis: Douglass s view for a good democratic citizen is superior, because Douglass s position as a free black man in society allows him to present arguments that intersect a humans naturally endowed freedoms with the concepts of inequality, race, and marginalization within the context of the law. P2: On the Laws of Nature = Natural Equality a. Emerson: The law is a representation of man s natural sentiments. b. Douglass: Freedom for all is a natural right. c. ... Rousseau: Good citizens are equally committed to both the state and their fellow citizens. The act of association consists of a reciprocal commitment between society and the individual, [man] finds himself doubly committed, first, as a member of a sovereign body in relation to individuals, and secondly as a member of the state in relation to the sovereign (62).
