Gulf War Syndrome is a chronic multi symptom illness affecting 250,000 of the 697,000 1991 Desert
Storm Gulf War veterans. Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans may also suffer from this syndrome. The
Veterans Administration refers to these illnesses as chronic multi symptom illness and undiagnosed
illnesses . We prefer not to use the term Gulf War Syndrome when referring to medically unexplained
symptoms reported by Gulf War veterans. Why? Because symptoms vary widely (Gulf War Veterans
Medically Unexplained Illnesses, 2016). The illnesses included in this syndrome are: chronic fatigue
syndrome, fibromyalgia, functional gastrointestinal disorders, and undiagnosed illnesses including
fatigue, cardiovascular disease, muscle and joint pain, respiratory disorders, headaches neurological
and psychological problems, and sleep disorders.
Research is being done on the correlation of combined chemical exposure plus stress and their effects
on memory. Many veterans suffer from PTSD and some researchers believe that the Gulf War
Syndrome (GWS) symptoms are in response to the stress associated with PTSD alone. Other
researchers believe that along with stress, there are neurological deficits linked with chemical
exposures.

However, even though tube feeding is used as a management strategy for newborns with dysphagia, it
does not preclude the need for feeding related treatment. In many cases, newborns will only require
feeding tube placement until they are strong enough or well enough to eat on their own (ASHA, n.d.).
Dr. Mabry reported that since NG tubes are not inhibitory for oral feeding therapy, oral feeding may
still be conducted in newborns with NG tube placement (personal communication, November 5,
2017). However, this becomes more problematic in newborns with G tube placement. Therefore, Dr.
Mabry recommends deferring oral feeding until the tube is removed or placed nasally (personal
communication, November 5, 2017). While dysphagia may exist alone, it often occurs in addition to
other conditions (Prasse Kikano, 2009). Approximately 50% of pediatric patients who have feeding
disorders have multiple causes contributing to their feeding difficulties. Similarly, 90% of these
patients have at least one medical diagnosis (Lefton Greif, 2008). These are factors a SLP must
