Matthew experimented with two poster designs for different franchises to practice different styles. One poster used red and blue textures to represent communism and capitalism for a Cold War theme. The other incorporated characters and Easter eggs from Doctor Who episodes. Through experimenting, Matthew found techniques like applying noise reduction filters and creating lighting layers to be useful. For his final product, Matthew plans to include a textured logo, prominent main character, and composited background scene. He aims to apply lessons on linking visuals to the story and composition techniques.
2. Process
Using two of the selected colours (from my
questionnaire,) for red for communism and blue for
capitalism and put the colours in the logo – to hint at
my audience, of the time with the cold war.
Furthermore the red could also provide the imagery of
blood being split – implementing the idea of murder...
Because a lot of the posters I look at (-over this
project,) used a plain white logo with a texture
applied I created a starting point to which I'd later
transform into a potential style for my logo.
With this piece, I was playing around with applying
different textures to the text as had been done
previous logo style designs I had looked at – apposed
to palying around in different fonts (in which I would
try next – as an alternative.)
Through pre-production I planned on using the top logo for my final production, however I didn't carry this through in the end – as I lost the
file for it when it came to production.
The reason I liked this logo is use of two colours used in it – in the way they both compliment each other (as contrasting colours,) whilst also
having connotations to the cold war theme of the of the product. On top of this, the logo's given a beaten ands run down texture – having
strong link to the setting where the show's set.
3. Process
Though this piece isn't part of the genre I'm planning to use for my
final genre, however it's on theme/topic of interest. Also, in doing
this I can experiment in a range of layouts and techniques I could
potentially use in my final product? Unlike the next project, this will
feature of ranger of Easter-eggs hinting at what'd happen in franchise
(which already exists,) this way I can better my understanding of how
to format series into a poster design – which will help me as I'm
planning on making my product part of a fictional series – I'd made
up...
Much like what I hope my final product to turn out, I've included our
main character (the 5th Doctor,) in the foreground of the image. This
to notify that the show or film is set around this particular character –
or at least play a big part in it...
Form the suggested preferences on my poster (from my
questionnaire,) I've played around with brighter colors into my poster
design.
This piece tells more of story in the background, rather than what I'll
hope to achieve for my final product. However, in my final product I
hope to use a plain-ish background - similar to allot of the designs the
BBC uses for their TV products.
(The reason for creating a poster (for an existing franchise,) is to get
use o how the story of the product links with the poster and the
visuals used with it.)
4. Process
This is a satellite featured in
the first part from - "Warriors
Of The Deep."
Because this is a promotional poster for the 21st series of Doctor Who, I've included Easter-eggs from through out the season... Also, on top of all these
Easter-eggs, this is part of the setup from the 5th Doctor's last story - "The Caves of Androzani-" (a story also features in this season.)
This is a Dalek, the main
villain from the serial –
"Resurrection Of The Daleks."
This is the Hakolian face, the
main villain from the serial –
"The Awakening."
This is a small group of
Gravis, the main villain from
the serial – "Frontious."
5. Process
Unlike the other experimental art piece, I worked with another
excising franchise in the actual genre of where my product will fit.
In the center of the piece, I've placed the villain (Scaramanga) and the
hero (James Bond,) placed and positioned to look like there in a
classic stand off – showing that these two characters are both
enemies. Whilst on the beach is the villain's henchman (Niknack,)
taking a very similar part to what he plays in the film (The Man With
A Golden Gun) - He overwatches events between Scaramanga and
Bond, which is also show in this poster...
The scene I've used here, is composed up from different images
to create the scene/background I've used – rathe than going out and
actually taking a picture at the right angle, at the right position, at the
right time, in the right weather... As this would overcomplicate things
and even then I wouldn't be able to guarantee everything would be
to standards – meaning this is a much easier alternative. For my final
product this will be useful technique – to compose a backdrop to go
background behind my character.
In the bottom left of the piece I've used the logo for the products (-
007/James Bond.)
(Again, the reason for creating a poster (for an existing franchise,) is
to get use o how the story of the product links with the poster and
the visuals used with it.)

6. Process
A filter I use a lot in my experimentation is
the "Reduce Noise" filter... By doing this I
can remove any noise from the piece, whilst
giving it an overall smooth and stylized look
– where applied.
However, this could be found time
consuming to apply this layer by layer – it
may likely more time efficient to apply to
whole image as an whole – by flattening it,
then applying it (as I would do to the layers,
but all at once – as the layers would all be
merged.)
A tool I use a lot in my experimentation is the "Brush Tool," I used
this to make a light source to blend in/shine past different layers. To
this I would create a new layer, and made mark where I wanted the
light to shine through – sometimes even creating a layer (on a
setting such as "overlay") below the light layer – to help blend the
light in.
7. Process (Log – Screenshots)
By searching for an image and adding - ".png" to the end of the file, this will search for the
image under the file type (".png.") The reason for searching for this particular file type is
because you can find an image with a pre-cut out background – which will be highlighted by
the light grey – to white checkered background – which in total will save me time for cutting
out the image.
8. Reflection
What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• In my final product I will be using standard use of the main character in the foreground (as
can be seen in the poster I used for Doctor Who...)
• I will be using .PNG files (that use a clear background,) where possible – to help make my
work easier – as it'd help save time on cutting out an image...
• I'll also be including either the red and blue textured logo in my final piece (only changing the
"text" to the title of my product.) - Or I'd include the concept of a texture and beaten logo
design...
9. Post Pre-Production
Before After
With my poster, I was experiment
with a textured background, that
when applied I found the
resolution had sized badly. In
attempt to fix this issue I planned
to – "duplicate" the texture's layer,
whilst applying a "emboss" affect,
to then "overlay" onto the original
layer.
However I found that my new
found layer applied too much of an
affect to the original layer, meaning
that I had to play around with the
duplicated layer's "opacity" to fit a
preferred strength.
Despite this, I found that when
zooming in again, rather than
solving the problem at hand it
brought out the details more – a
feature I'd then possibly keep...

11. Post Pre-Production
Despite finding a piece that I could've used and
tried to make useable, I unfortunately
scrapped it after deciding it could be better if I
made my own, using a different texture, still
applying the same blue-ish cloud as they had
done. On top of this I could make a version
that was to a higher quality, to the previous
one...
I used a blue colour, with a dark tone and low
saturation – to create a gritty colour, that'd go
with the genre type I was looking to produce (a
gritty drama.) On top of this – by using a blue
colour, I can create the link to capitalism.
12. Post Pre-Production
In my pre-production, I planned to use bullet holes on top of the piece – to
give it a more in-depth look. However I chose not to for my final piece as I
feel like it has took away from the detail I put into the background. On top
this, I felt like – when applied to the piece, it made it look cheaper and less
professional – it looked my like camera filter applied onto the piece – so I
removed it when I finished my final product.
In an attempt to make the bullet wholes seem more convincing, I applied a
"Drop Shadow" on the "Layer Styles" to apply a shadow below the layers. By
using a "Drop Shadow" - apposed to an "Inner Shadow," it places a shadow
below – rather than the shadow going into the object.
However, I was going to do this originally as a way to fill the emptiness of the
background in – whilst expanding on the genre of action and crime – as the
bullet wholes would be created by a gun shooting.
13. Reflection
Strengths:
• I successfully created to different, experimental posters – in two different
styles – to see what styles I like to work with (despite the fact that non of
the themes weren't either similar) - so I could experiment with the
similarities between the processes of the two poster – in which I found
removing the noise and giving it a smoother look to it worked for the
pieces, whilst adding lighting in a new layer – with a "Brush."
• Even though my experimentation before I started the work on production
was
Weaknesses:
• These theme's aren't directly reflecting the theme of my final product, my
experiments – it'd of likely been better if I experiment styles more in my
theme. However, when it did come to production, I did experiment with
the product as I went along.
