Department of Nursing
Fall 2024 Orientation
Welcome to Miami University Nursing!
Did you know?
Nursing has been at Miami for over 50 years!
The department began by offering an Associate Degree program at
Miami’s Regional Campus and has expanded over time to now offer a BSN
program at both the Hamilton Campus and the Oxford campus, as well as
Graduate MSN program in two different tracks and a Doctorate of Nursing
Practice. Our first class of Oxford campus BSN graduates graduated in
May of 2022 and the Oxford program has grown in size each year since it
began in the Fall of 2019.
Our Mission and Values
It is the Mission of Miami University’s Nursing program to Empower
tomorrow’s nurse leaders to become exceptional, caring professionals.
● We achieve this mission through taking a vested interest in not only our students
capacity to pass their licensure exams, but in developing their professionalism,
communication skills, critical thinking and decision making skills, and leadership
and collaborative abilities.
Our values as a program are Leadership, Integrity, Excellence, Caring,
and Collaboration.
● We work to instill these in our students through faculty who embody our values and
decisions made with them in mind.
Department Structure
Faculty
● First point of contact for issues and questions about course delivery and content. Students are expected to
communicate and resolve issues first with faculty before taking issues up the chain of command. Students are also
encouraged to meet with faculty and ask for help when needed with course content. Keeping an open line of
communication with your course instructor is one of the best ways to succeed in a class!
Academic Advisor
● First point of contact for issues and questions about course registration and scheduling, completion of liberal
education requirements (Miami Global Plan), and connecting with university resources. Offers support in navigating
university system - no question is too dumb/weird to ask your advisor!
Chief Departmental Advisor
● Oversees advising of Nursing students on a departmental level. Involved in tracking graduation requirements and
training/assisting faculty advisors. Works with students individually when a change of progression is needed.
Department Chair
● Oversees Nursing department from administrative leadership level.
Foundational Curriculum
Freshman Nursing Courses
NSG 252: Foundations of Professional Nursing
Introduces the student to the role of the nurse as a partner in health promotion with others within
the healthcare system. Nursing is studied in light of its historical roots, educational trends,
professional/political power, theory and research, and the profession’s role in the changing health
care delivery system.
NSG 261: Health and Physical Assessment (Theory and Lab)
Designed to develop transcultural health assessment skills across the lifespan. Content and
practice focus on developing cognitive and psychomotor skills associated with obtaining a
complete database through history taking and physical assessments. Students will identify
assessment findings that fall outside accepted parameters of normal for pediatric, adult, geriatric,
and pregnant populations.
Foundational Curriculum (cont.)
Success in higher level Nursing classes is built on a strong science
foundation.
Freshman Science Courses:
● BIO 171 & BIO 172: Anatomy and Physiology I & II
● CHM 131: Chemistry of Life Processes
● MBI 111: Microorganisms and Human Disease
● MBI 123: Experimenting with Microbes
Progression Requirements and Expectations
Progression refers to a students progress through the Nursing major course requirements.
The department has developed policies to govern students’ progression through the curriculum based on Ohio Board of
Nursing standards and student success data.
Students receive the full progression policy in their Nursing Student Handbook and are responsible for knowledge of the
policy.
● Progression to Sophomore year is contingent upon:
Cumulative GPA of 2.7 or greater
Completion of all year one Nursing Program required courses with a grade of C or better
● In addition to year-by-year progression requirements, there are semester-by-semester requirements due to
progressive nature of content (courses must be taken in order assigned by department in accordance with course
prerequisites).
● Students must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average while enrolled in the Nursing program.
● A grade of C or better must be attained in all Nursing Program required courses (Nursing and non-Nursing)
A grade of C- or lower in one Nursing Program required course is considered a course failure.
If a student receives below a grade of C in two Nursing Program required courses (Nursing or non-Nursing)
(may be two different courses or failing the same course twice), that student will be dismissed from the
Nursing Program.
Standards of Nursing Profession
We believe it is important and necessary to have high expectations and standards for our
students. We also believe in every admitted student’s ability to meet those standards.
Nursing is a profession with high stakes that impacts real people and communities. We must be
confident in the quality and capability of the nurses we graduate from our program.
Our curriculum and policies are not designed to create barriers but to appropriately challenge
our students to grow and develop the skills they need to be successful and effective nurse
professionals.
Students are supported through this challenging curriculum by their faculty, university resources,
and their peers. We foster a culture of collaboration among students and sustained growth over
time. Students are encouraged and advised to seek help early and often.

  • 1. Department of Nursing Fall 2024 Orientation
  • 2. Welcome to Miami University Nursing! Did you know? Nursing has been at Miami for over 50 years! The department began by offering an Associate Degree program at Miami’s Regional Campus and has expanded over time to now offer a BSN program at both the Hamilton Campus and the Oxford campus, as well as Graduate MSN program in two different tracks and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Our first class of Oxford campus BSN graduates graduated in May of 2022 and the Oxford program has grown in size each year since it began in the Fall of 2019.
  • 3. Our Mission and Values It is the Mission of Miami University’s Nursing program to Empower tomorrow’s nurse leaders to become exceptional, caring professionals. ● We achieve this mission through taking a vested interest in not only our students capacity to pass their licensure exams, but in developing their professionalism, communication skills, critical thinking and decision making skills, and leadership and collaborative abilities. Our values as a program are Leadership, Integrity, Excellence, Caring, and Collaboration. ● We work to instill these in our students through faculty who embody our values and decisions made with them in mind.
  • 4. Department Structure Faculty ● First point of contact for issues and questions about course delivery and content. Students are expected to communicate and resolve issues first with faculty before taking issues up the chain of command. Students are also encouraged to meet with faculty and ask for help when needed with course content. Keeping an open line of communication with your course instructor is one of the best ways to succeed in a class! Academic Advisor ● First point of contact for issues and questions about course registration and scheduling, completion of liberal education requirements (Miami Global Plan), and connecting with university resources. Offers support in navigating university system - no question is too dumb/weird to ask your advisor! Chief Departmental Advisor ● Oversees advising of Nursing students on a departmental level. Involved in tracking graduation requirements and training/assisting faculty advisors. Works with students individually when a change of progression is needed. Department Chair ● Oversees Nursing department from administrative leadership level.
  • 5. Foundational Curriculum Freshman Nursing Courses NSG 252: Foundations of Professional Nursing Introduces the student to the role of the nurse as a partner in health promotion with others within the healthcare system. Nursing is studied in light of its historical roots, educational trends, professional/political power, theory and research, and the profession’s role in the changing health care delivery system. NSG 261: Health and Physical Assessment (Theory and Lab) Designed to develop transcultural health assessment skills across the lifespan. Content and practice focus on developing cognitive and psychomotor skills associated with obtaining a complete database through history taking and physical assessments. Students will identify assessment findings that fall outside accepted parameters of normal for pediatric, adult, geriatric, and pregnant populations.
  • 6. Foundational Curriculum (cont.) Success in higher level Nursing classes is built on a strong science foundation. Freshman Science Courses: ● BIO 171 & BIO 172: Anatomy and Physiology I & II ● CHM 131: Chemistry of Life Processes ● MBI 111: Microorganisms and Human Disease ● MBI 123: Experimenting with Microbes
  • 7. Progression Requirements and Expectations Progression refers to a students progress through the Nursing major course requirements. The department has developed policies to govern students’ progression through the curriculum based on Ohio Board of Nursing standards and student success data. Students receive the full progression policy in their Nursing Student Handbook and are responsible for knowledge of the policy. ● Progression to Sophomore year is contingent upon: Cumulative GPA of 2.7 or greater Completion of all year one Nursing Program required courses with a grade of C or better ● In addition to year-by-year progression requirements, there are semester-by-semester requirements due to progressive nature of content (courses must be taken in order assigned by department in accordance with course prerequisites). ● Students must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average while enrolled in the Nursing program. ● A grade of C or better must be attained in all Nursing Program required courses (Nursing and non-Nursing) A grade of C- or lower in one Nursing Program required course is considered a course failure. If a student receives below a grade of C in two Nursing Program required courses (Nursing or non-Nursing) (may be two different courses or failing the same course twice), that student will be dismissed from the Nursing Program.
  • 8. Standards of Nursing Profession We believe it is important and necessary to have high expectations and standards for our students. We also believe in every admitted student’s ability to meet those standards. Nursing is a profession with high stakes that impacts real people and communities. We must be confident in the quality and capability of the nurses we graduate from our program. Our curriculum and policies are not designed to create barriers but to appropriately challenge our students to grow and develop the skills they need to be successful and effective nurse professionals. Students are supported through this challenging curriculum by their faculty, university resources, and their peers. We foster a culture of collaboration among students and sustained growth over time. Students are encouraged and advised to seek help early and often.
