Before finalising my personal statement, I drafted it over in a word document.

1. Growingup I alwayshadfondnessforstoriesandalwayswantingtotell myowninone mediumor
anotherway,whilstalsogrowingupwithcinemafroma youngage. RecentlyI’ve beenchannelling
these elementstowardsdirecting,agrowingpassionthroughinspirationssuchasEdgar Wrightand
more recentlythe quirky/characteristicfilmsof WesAnderson.IgenerallywatchfilmsIfindtobe
goodand want to achieve thatkindof thingformyself.
Throughcollege I’ve beenlearningaswell asdevelopingmymediaskillsandgraduallybuildonthose
of mydirecting,makingthe mostof mypersonal projectsandtakingall the opportunitiesIcan to
workin the mediumof film.Comingoutof college,I’mhopingforuniversitytobe the nextstepin
achievingthe aspirationsof doingthisprofessionallyandimprovingmyskillsfurthertothatstandard
of work.
Overthe three yearsI’ve beenstudyingmediaatYork College (startingonLevel 2and workingmy
wayup Level 3,) I’ve made magazines,animatedpixel art,digital artworkandmagazine covers,as
well asworkingonmusicvideos,anadvert,a title sequence andgeneral film.Thiswasthe partI
enjoyedmost,especiallywhenImade myshort filmandevenwhenImade the shortpre-titles
sequence of lastyear'sfinal majorproject.I’ve alsofoundthatcollege hasbeenagoodwayto
motivate me more andpushme to complete more projects,suchasthe oneslisted.However,
despite everythingI’ve achieved,I’dstill like todevelopmyskillsalotfurther,inwhichI’mhopingI’ll
be able to achieve bygoingtouniversity –givingme the rightteachingandthe time to practice.
Meanwhile,inmyowntime IoftenfindmyselfdissectingfilmandTV (bothgoodandbad,) purely
basedon interestandenjoyment.Indirecting,Ijustreallyenjoytellingmystory,sowritinga
screenplay,andwithall these creativewaysof visualisingstorytellingandsettingupnarratives.In
my experience sofar,Ihave foundthe greatestenjoymentinpre-production,developingconcepts
and designingsequencesandplanninghow toproduce this.However,Ihave workedhardto
improve myconfidence inproductionandworkinghardtorealise myintentions.Thishasbeenthe
mostpleasingpartof my developedsofarand I envisage thisimprovingexponentiallythrough
furtherstudyat university.Formyfinal yearprojectat York college,I’mhopingtobuildupto
producingmyfirstpropershort film – workingwithwritingascreenplay,budgetingenoughtoget
betterlocationsandIhope to obtainreal actors. On topof this,to try fora betterimage,I'll be trying
to filmina profile,togeta dynamiclightingrange,togive me the bestcontrol overlighting,colour
and sharpness.Thiscombinedwithexperimentingwithmore sophisticatedcameraandequipment
excitesme andgivesme the mostsatisfactioninmyprojects.
Currently,I’mholdingdownajobat the local Morrisonsmainlytojustearn a little moneyonthe
side,howeveritprovidesme withbettersocial skillsandskillsof workingina team, bothskillsthat
feedwell intodirecting.The moneyalsohelpsfundmyfilms,whilstbeinggenerallyagoodpractice
for the industry.
By goingto university,Ihope togainaccess the right andprofessional standardof equipment,
alongside the teachingandpractice withittogain a professionalstandardof directingskills.Ibelieve
that universitywill be helpme togetintothe filmindustry,more specificallydirectinginthe film
industry,howeverthe smaller(lesscinematicsection,) butthe more indie part,alongwithdirectors
such as the great WesAndersonorEdgar Wright – my twobiggestinspirationsof the industry.
