Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
2. Existing Product
the dark lighting in
this fighting scene
makes the
characters look
more evil , also
the volcano and
especially lava
makes the setting
look darker and
more evil as we
associate lava with
hell and the devil.
The bright vibrant colors at the top of
the image shows the players who is
who and how much damage they have
done to their opponent. The colors
make this stand out on the dark
background , this is a good thing as
then people can easily see who is who
and how much damage they have done
clearly.
The medium long angle
provides the audience
with enough room to
see the characters and
the background. It also
provides the player with
room to move as the
angle provides a lot of
room. Also the
landscape image is
important because if
the game was portrait
the game would be
harder to play due to
the characters being
zoomed out or the
background being small.
This appeals to the
target audience as the
characters are teens
themselves which will
relate to the teen
audience. This will also
lead them to buy it or
playing it.
The outfits in which the
characters are wearing also
make the characters stand
out more so that when
playing you don’t lose track
of your character as if she
was wearing a black she
would be harder to notice
due to the background.
3. Existing Product
The landscape background is
important in this game as then It
gives the player a good amount of
room between the other player.
The lighting also on this game
emphasizes the characters as the
background gets lighter towards
the fighters. The costumes the
fighters are wearing also makes
them get noticed as the bright pink
color creates and contrasts against
the darkish color behind her.
The mise en scene here is also
very clear as you can instantly tell
that the background is a robot
theme. The arrangement of the
top and bottom bar are very
good as they don’t interrupt with
the fighters.
The target audience are
drawn into this as the
audience age range are
similar age to the
characters therefore
the can relate to the
game. This could lead
to them buying or
playing the game.
The lighting is very good as well in
this game as they have edited the
game so that the characters are
brighter which makes them stand
out. Also they have added a glare
on the weapon so that people
know how powerful that character
actually is.
4. Existing Product
They have used a landscape
background with a medium shot
camera angle. This is good for a
game like this as it gives each
player enough room to move.
The floor is also brighter than the
top of the background which
makes the background almost
look like it is underwater.
The characters are both male and
are shown to have large muscles
which is associated with the male
stereotype. The characters are
also quite thin which is good for
when players are playing the
game as they have more room to
attack and block. The mise en scene is very organized in this game as they
have include a game bar at the top of the screen which
shows all the info needed. The background is also well
organized as they have included enough props so that
people know what theme they are trying to show.
This scene makes the audience want to buy
it (teenagers) as they have used costumes
such as black belts which may appeal to
their audience as teenagers are more
interested in karate and fighting.
The fonts at the
top of the
screen are easy
to spot when
playing the
game.
The location
shows that the
game has no
limits , for
example you can
fight anywhere .
5. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched
products have?
• Most of the existing products I have analyzed include the same features , for example
they include a bar at the top and bottom to indicate time , character and health. Also
the games all include similar animated characters , the games also don’t focus on
specific gender characters however the men seem to be more muscly. Finally all the
products I have analyzed have included darkish backgrounds , this may be to emphasize
the characters or to show their evil characteristics.
• What aspects of the research will you include
within your on work?
• Within my work I will try and include a bar at the top and the bottom to indicate the
characters , health and time. I will also include a dark background , possibly a volcano
with lava coming out of it. I may also include no weapons as the characters in these
existing games.
7. Audience Profile
Category Demographic Content to appeal to this audience
Age Range
12-16 • The characters will be similar age to the
audience therefore the audience can relate
to the players.
Gender
Male • Fighting , this is because stereotypically men
are more violent than women. Also you
tend to get more men than women fighters.
Also men are seen to be stronger then
women therefore people will want to play
as the stronger and bigger characters.
Psychographic
Balanced • This is because the want to achieve but are
not ultimately aiming for that.
Social Status
Working class • This is because you would normally
associate the higher class people to play
more sophisticated games instead of
fighting games. You also wouldn't’t target
this product at lower class people because
they will need to purchase the game as well
as a console.
