BRAINSTORM
Music
This idea is to make an advert
for a music artist coming to
york or to make an advert for
a music venue in york.
This idea is to create a music
venue guide in york which is
aimed at students. This would
show the venues to the
audience and would offer
them different ideas.
This idea is to make a leaflet on
different venues and different artists
coming to york. These venues will be
those which are popular with young
people, such as fibbers and the
basement.
Homeless/Climate change
For this idea I will make a poster which will display the problems surrounding york.
These are those such as homelessness and climate issues. This poster will feature facts
about these issues and would appeal to the audience. This would be by making them
feel bad and I would also include something that would appeal to them. For example
80% of young people use too much plastic.
Football
For this idea I would make a poster
or a guide to football in york, this is
the most unlikely idea due to york
only having one football team and
them being in the national league
north. For this I would advertise
york football team and would link it
to york. This would be done by
having elements of which york are
known for in my piece.
I was thinking to do this idea because I
am interested in football and I want to
do something I am interested in.
For this idea I would
appeal to my audience by
adding say people on the
poster or my guide similar
aged to them. I would also
include in formal
language. This is due to
them not wanting to read
much. This is shown by
other products such as
Nike and red bull who
don’t use many words in
there adverts and if so
they are informal.
For this idea I was thinking I could make an advert which would be print based. This
would be showing york and yorks music venues to the audience. This would feature
upcoming bands/artists and would be targeting 16-21 year olds. I would focus on artist
performing in york who would be of interest to this audience. These would be artists
with younger target audiences and genres which have a large younger people
audience. The advert would also feature venues such as fibbers as well as the
basement. Both of these venues both include lots of young people. The whole point of
this idea is to show younger people yorks music venues and show them how popular
they are within younger people. To do this I will make the advertisement very
appealing. This will be done by including bright colors, large interesting images and this
will also feature something to do with york. The ideas for this I have had is to link the
main image to something famous about york. This could be Viking related, the minster
or the castle walls. To do this I could use historic fonts, images of these which would be
faint to the audience, for example I could include a picture of the minster which was on
a low opacity.
Main idea
Information
The total population of York as of 2011 is
198,051. Of that number, women outnumber
men considerably in York. There are 101,797
women and only 96,254 men within the city
limits. When looking at percentages, this
means that 51.4% of the population is female
and 48.6% is male. The population density of
the city stands at 7,283 people per hectare of
land. Age statistics in York show that there are
158,773 adults above the age of 16 living in
York. The majority are between the ages of 35
and 54, with 51,588 people within this age
bracket. The median age in York is 38
University of York
Enrollment=18,110
York ST john university
Enrollment=6,500
This shows that 24,610 people enrolled
in 2016. This has probably gone up due
to the increase n populartion and
popularity of universitys. York college
also has aproximatly 8,400 students.
This gives me a large audience to aim at.
This shows that pop music is the most popular music among 16-
19 year olds. This is the main majority of my audience. This is
shown by artist such as Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes being
the most listened artists on spottily, both of these produce pop
music. From this I can gather that a large part of my audience
will like pop music as well as hip hop music. This being shown
due to them being the most listened to. This then shows me
that I will have to advertise venues that show pop or hip hop
music or advertise an artist coming to york who produces either
of them genres.
These genres will appeal the most to my audience
due to them being the most listened to. To appeal
to them on my product I will have to show the genre
through my work. This will be done by myself
including connotations and conventions of these
two genres. I will also include for example light
colors due to them often being associated to pop
music. This being due to them having positive
connotations.
I wont focus on the remaining
genres due to them not being
most listened to by my audience. I
may still include small sections of
these, this is because there will be
a small section of my audience
who is interested in them.

colors
For my colors I shall include colors obviously representing
the artist but will also use those which appeal to the
audience. Brighter colors will appeal to my audience due to
them being vibrant and obviously bright. This will make the
product stick out and look interesting. The colors will
instantly draw there attention to my product. In my
products I may include a guide which shows the venues in
york. I may choose colors which are associated to the genre
f music they show, for example if they show pop music I
will most likely include bright colors. I may decide to have a
darker background due to them showing them events at
night. For my other product of which I may make an poster
for an artist coming to york I may choose to use brighter
colors to make the artist stand out.
This is a music event poster for an event in York. This is the same
as what I am doing.on this poster you can clearly see that this is
advertising ANDY C and MC TONN PIPER. This poster also
showers where the event will be held and also who else will be
there, this also states when the opening time is and how old you
have to be to go in. This information has all been shown by using
bold white font. This makes it stand out and also makes the poster
look neat and organised. This is due to them having all the
information in white, the font itself is quite standard however he
changed slightly when they have advertised PHIBES. For this they
have selected a small section of the text and moved it, this is to
cause a glitch effect. This implies he creates dance and electronic
music, this is because this font is often associated with them sort of
artists. For example the prodigy logo includes a glitch effect similar
to this. The font also is larger for some artists. This is to show they
are more popular and more of a main event. From this I can see
that ANDY C is the most famous and most popular person
performing there at this event, the colours they have use work
perfectly to display the font. The colours also used here are bright
and make the event look like an actual event. By this I mean that it
doesn’t make the event look not professional. The colours which
feature red and lighter shades of red. This does have con nations
of blood and death however I don’t think this is meant to be
interpreted like that, the red does also suggest negative things like
swearing and also connotations which would suggest you would
have to be older. The colours around the artist are very colourful
and are very bright and appealing. This is to draw the audience's
attention to who I assume is ANDY C, I assume this because his
name is the biggest and he is clearly headlining the event, the
colours also make the artist stand out more and makes him look
noticeable. The background features slanted rectangles which
includes different shades of red and various other colours, this
again makes it look more noticeable and makes the event look
exciting. From this I could also guess that this was an electronic
and a dance event. This is due to very often edm music logos are
slanted, for example avicii. I am not sure why this is however it is
used frequently within this genre and is a connotation. The poster
has used conventions such as it has shown all the relevant
information which is typically shown, it has also included bright
colours which is tropical for an edm event. The final one is that it
has used an image of the artist.
Existing products
LAYOUTS
Existing products of events in york.
From my results you can see that majority of my audience
said they listen to pop music. This was followed by hip hop
music. This links in to my graphs I featured earlier in my
research which stated that pop music was the most listened
to within this age group and hip hop followed it. From this
information I will make a music poster and music guide
which is based around pop music, hip hop or do products
surrounding both genres.
From this question I have found that more people have been to a music event than not. This is positive for my product due to it being
based around music. My product will be advertising a music event so its good having an audience which have been to a music event.
This is due to them being likely to go to the event I am advertising.
From this question I have found out that more people don’t find
event posters appealing than do. Although this is the case 3/8
said that they appeal to them. This could be due to the posters
they have seen not been of events that interest them by this I
mean they may not like the venue, genre or the artist. Another
reason why they may not appeal to them may be due to them not
including large text, bright colors and a large main image. To
appeal to my audience I will include these things, this is so it
stands out to them. From this I can also see that 37% said that
event posters appeal to them, this is still a lot of people if you say
that 37% of approximately 8 billion people say that event posters
appeal to them.
This question shows me what the audience would like to see on
a music event poster. This gives me some ideas into what my
audience likes and what things would appeal to them. One
common thing that came up a lot in the responses was that
they would want the poster to include a venue or artist that
interests them. From my research I have gathered that my
audience prefers pop music followed by hip hop so for this I will
include a product surrounding these genres. Another thing I will
include will be large text. This is because then the audience will
be able to see the event that appeals to them from a distance.
From this I can see that 4 people out of 8 have been out in york. I can also see that 1 out of the 4 people have been to a music venue in
york. This means 3/8 people are my audience. They may be more people however the events in york may not have interested them. Based
on my audience I will make the event hip hop or pop related. This is because based on my research I have found out that the majority of
my audiences like these genres.
From this question I can see that 3 people out of 8 look at venue
guides. From this question I was actually quite surprised, this is
due to venue guides not being very popular. From the 3 out of 8
people this shows that the 3 out of 8 people are interested in
music venue guides. For mine I will again make it related to the
genre and to the research I have done about my audience.
From this question I have established that my
audience wants to see brighter colours on my
products, this is due to them standing out which
will therefore catch their eye when they see them. I
will include bright colours within my products and
especially within my music events poster. To aim
at the audience I am going for a nightlife theme,
this is where I will use colours typically used for
clubbing and parties. These being vibrant colours
like purple, pink, blue, red and yellow/neon. These
colours will like I said stick out and raw there eyes
to the poster. I will include brighter colours within
my tour guide however this won’t be as noticeable.
My tour guide which will be online will feature
bright lloris however I will not go for the same
theme. This is as in night life and colours that have
connotations surrounding that. On my tour poster I
am planning on using different colours and colours
that will make my product stand out, this is
because a tour guide without bright colours will
look a bit dull. From my feedback you can see
from me primary readership I have had 100% of
my audience so far said at least one bright colour
in their answers. This shows that bright colours in
my products are vital. Many similar products
especially music posters do feature bright colours,
this may have influenced there answers, this is
due to this being all they know.

Planning york project

  • 1. Ideas BRAINSTORM Music This idea is to make an advert for a music artist coming to york or to make an advert for a music venue in york. This idea is to create a music venue guide in york which is aimed at students. This would show the venues to the audience and would offer them different ideas. This idea is to make a leaflet on different venues and different artists coming to york. These venues will be those which are popular with young people, such as fibbers and the basement. Homeless/Climate change For this idea I will make a poster which will display the problems surrounding york. These are those such as homelessness and climate issues. This poster will feature facts about these issues and would appeal to the audience. This would be by making them feel bad and I would also include something that would appeal to them. For example 80% of young people use too much plastic. Football For this idea I would make a poster or a guide to football in york, this is the most unlikely idea due to york only having one football team and them being in the national league north. For this I would advertise york football team and would link it to york. This would be done by having elements of which york are known for in my piece. I was thinking to do this idea because I am interested in football and I want to do something I am interested in. For this idea I would appeal to my audience by adding say people on the poster or my guide similar aged to them. I would also include in formal language. This is due to them not wanting to read much. This is shown by other products such as Nike and red bull who don’t use many words in there adverts and if so they are informal.
  • 2. For this idea I was thinking I could make an advert which would be print based. This would be showing york and yorks music venues to the audience. This would feature upcoming bands/artists and would be targeting 16-21 year olds. I would focus on artist performing in york who would be of interest to this audience. These would be artists with younger target audiences and genres which have a large younger people audience. The advert would also feature venues such as fibbers as well as the basement. Both of these venues both include lots of young people. The whole point of this idea is to show younger people yorks music venues and show them how popular they are within younger people. To do this I will make the advertisement very appealing. This will be done by including bright colors, large interesting images and this will also feature something to do with york. The ideas for this I have had is to link the main image to something famous about york. This could be Viking related, the minster or the castle walls. To do this I could use historic fonts, images of these which would be faint to the audience, for example I could include a picture of the minster which was on a low opacity. Main idea
  • 3. Information The total population of York as of 2011 is 198,051. Of that number, women outnumber men considerably in York. There are 101,797 women and only 96,254 men within the city limits. When looking at percentages, this means that 51.4% of the population is female and 48.6% is male. The population density of the city stands at 7,283 people per hectare of land. Age statistics in York show that there are 158,773 adults above the age of 16 living in York. The majority are between the ages of 35 and 54, with 51,588 people within this age bracket. The median age in York is 38 University of York Enrollment=18,110 York ST john university Enrollment=6,500 This shows that 24,610 people enrolled in 2016. This has probably gone up due to the increase n populartion and popularity of universitys. York college also has aproximatly 8,400 students. This gives me a large audience to aim at.
  • 4. This shows that pop music is the most popular music among 16- 19 year olds. This is the main majority of my audience. This is shown by artist such as Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes being the most listened artists on spottily, both of these produce pop music. From this I can gather that a large part of my audience will like pop music as well as hip hop music. This being shown due to them being the most listened to. This then shows me that I will have to advertise venues that show pop or hip hop music or advertise an artist coming to york who produces either of them genres. These genres will appeal the most to my audience due to them being the most listened to. To appeal to them on my product I will have to show the genre through my work. This will be done by myself including connotations and conventions of these two genres. I will also include for example light colors due to them often being associated to pop music. This being due to them having positive connotations. I wont focus on the remaining genres due to them not being most listened to by my audience. I may still include small sections of these, this is because there will be a small section of my audience who is interested in them. https://www.statista.com/statistics/253915/favorite-music-genres-in-the-us/ date accessed 20th September
  • 5. colors For my colors I shall include colors obviously representing the artist but will also use those which appeal to the audience. Brighter colors will appeal to my audience due to them being vibrant and obviously bright. This will make the product stick out and look interesting. The colors will instantly draw there attention to my product. In my products I may include a guide which shows the venues in york. I may choose colors which are associated to the genre f music they show, for example if they show pop music I will most likely include bright colors. I may decide to have a darker background due to them showing them events at night. For my other product of which I may make an poster for an artist coming to york I may choose to use brighter colors to make the artist stand out.
  • 6. This is a music event poster for an event in York. This is the same as what I am doing.on this poster you can clearly see that this is advertising ANDY C and MC TONN PIPER. This poster also showers where the event will be held and also who else will be there, this also states when the opening time is and how old you have to be to go in. This information has all been shown by using bold white font. This makes it stand out and also makes the poster look neat and organised. This is due to them having all the information in white, the font itself is quite standard however he changed slightly when they have advertised PHIBES. For this they have selected a small section of the text and moved it, this is to cause a glitch effect. This implies he creates dance and electronic music, this is because this font is often associated with them sort of artists. For example the prodigy logo includes a glitch effect similar to this. The font also is larger for some artists. This is to show they are more popular and more of a main event. From this I can see that ANDY C is the most famous and most popular person performing there at this event, the colours they have use work perfectly to display the font. The colours also used here are bright and make the event look like an actual event. By this I mean that it doesn’t make the event look not professional. The colours which feature red and lighter shades of red. This does have con nations of blood and death however I don’t think this is meant to be interpreted like that, the red does also suggest negative things like swearing and also connotations which would suggest you would have to be older. The colours around the artist are very colourful and are very bright and appealing. This is to draw the audience's attention to who I assume is ANDY C, I assume this because his name is the biggest and he is clearly headlining the event, the colours also make the artist stand out more and makes him look noticeable. The background features slanted rectangles which includes different shades of red and various other colours, this again makes it look more noticeable and makes the event look exciting. From this I could also guess that this was an electronic and a dance event. This is due to very often edm music logos are slanted, for example avicii. I am not sure why this is however it is used frequently within this genre and is a connotation. The poster has used conventions such as it has shown all the relevant information which is typically shown, it has also included bright colours which is tropical for an edm event. The final one is that it has used an image of the artist.
  • 8. Existing products of events in york.
  • 9. From my results you can see that majority of my audience said they listen to pop music. This was followed by hip hop music. This links in to my graphs I featured earlier in my research which stated that pop music was the most listened to within this age group and hip hop followed it. From this information I will make a music poster and music guide which is based around pop music, hip hop or do products surrounding both genres.
  • 10. From this question I have found that more people have been to a music event than not. This is positive for my product due to it being based around music. My product will be advertising a music event so its good having an audience which have been to a music event. This is due to them being likely to go to the event I am advertising. From this question I have found out that more people don’t find event posters appealing than do. Although this is the case 3/8 said that they appeal to them. This could be due to the posters they have seen not been of events that interest them by this I mean they may not like the venue, genre or the artist. Another reason why they may not appeal to them may be due to them not including large text, bright colors and a large main image. To appeal to my audience I will include these things, this is so it stands out to them. From this I can also see that 37% said that event posters appeal to them, this is still a lot of people if you say that 37% of approximately 8 billion people say that event posters appeal to them.
  • 11. This question shows me what the audience would like to see on a music event poster. This gives me some ideas into what my audience likes and what things would appeal to them. One common thing that came up a lot in the responses was that they would want the poster to include a venue or artist that interests them. From my research I have gathered that my audience prefers pop music followed by hip hop so for this I will include a product surrounding these genres. Another thing I will include will be large text. This is because then the audience will be able to see the event that appeals to them from a distance.
  • 12. From this I can see that 4 people out of 8 have been out in york. I can also see that 1 out of the 4 people have been to a music venue in york. This means 3/8 people are my audience. They may be more people however the events in york may not have interested them. Based on my audience I will make the event hip hop or pop related. This is because based on my research I have found out that the majority of my audiences like these genres. From this question I can see that 3 people out of 8 look at venue guides. From this question I was actually quite surprised, this is due to venue guides not being very popular. From the 3 out of 8 people this shows that the 3 out of 8 people are interested in music venue guides. For mine I will again make it related to the genre and to the research I have done about my audience.
  • 13. From this question I have established that my audience wants to see brighter colours on my products, this is due to them standing out which will therefore catch their eye when they see them. I will include bright colours within my products and especially within my music events poster. To aim at the audience I am going for a nightlife theme, this is where I will use colours typically used for clubbing and parties. These being vibrant colours like purple, pink, blue, red and yellow/neon. These colours will like I said stick out and raw there eyes to the poster. I will include brighter colours within my tour guide however this won’t be as noticeable. My tour guide which will be online will feature bright lloris however I will not go for the same theme. This is as in night life and colours that have connotations surrounding that. On my tour poster I am planning on using different colours and colours that will make my product stand out, this is because a tour guide without bright colours will look a bit dull. From my feedback you can see from me primary readership I have had 100% of my audience so far said at least one bright colour in their answers. This shows that bright colours in my products are vital. Many similar products especially music posters do feature bright colours, this may have influenced there answers, this is due to this being all they know.
