The masthead of this article is
front and center, immediately
drawing the readers attention.
The soft and calm style of the
capitalized white font
surrounded by the pastel
green frame suits the the
specific and relaxed premise of
the magazine.
The selling line is direct and
to the point, telling the
reader exactly what they
will be reading.
The featured article photo is of
the featured author in this
issue. People who know of this
author and of her work they will
want to read the issue. The
picture itself is flattering and
calming, with subtle natural
colors and professional look to
it.
The headline is – again – strict
and to the point. It tells readers
what is exactly inside and
whether they will enjoy the
contents or not. The words ‘Get
personal’ are a different colour
from the rest of the text,
probably so it stands out to
readers and gets them hooked.
This kicker informs readers of what
they cam expect from inside and
incites them to read more by using
words such as ‘secrets’ and asking
questions.
3. Existing Product
The mass head for this
magazine is a creative and
unusual font with some of
the letters translucent
framed by a white aware
and other letters just plain
white. This will capture the
attention of the audience.
The headline is front and
center, short and catchy. It Is
written in a curvy and retro
font. This will make the
audience curios and want to
see more.
The menu strip is short and to
the point, letting the audience
immediately know what to
expect when picking up the
article. Using short buzz words
like this doesn't’t give too much
away.
The feature article photo is of a famous
actor dressed in a outfit made of old-
seeming technology. This will entice
readers to read the magazine as they
will recognize the actor and be
enthralled by the interesting and eye-
capturing pose he is pulling at the outfit
he is wearing.
This kicker expects readers to have
knowledge already about what the
millennium falcon is, which conveys to
me the kind of target audience this
magazine is going for. People who
enjoy star wars will be intrigued by this
kicker and want to read the article
inside.
4. Existing Product
The layout of this magazine is very
simplistic and minimalistic. They
use a baby pink blank background
and stiff, striking font to convey a
sense of fashionable simplicity.
There is not much content to this
cover, as most indie designs
aesthetic is a clean cut image.
The menus strip is written in a
plain black font, there to let
readers know what is inside issue.
This magazine used interviewees
name to tell readers what (or
who) they will be reading about.
This subheading is in italic
making it stound out a little bit.
It only vaguely helps readers
distinguish what the issue will
be about, which might help
given the indie aesthetic the
magazine is going with.
The barcode is placed clearly on
the front to make it easier for
readers to purchase the product.
This font is bold and cutting,
immediately drawing readers
attention. Another thing that can
appeal to the magazines target
audience of unique and intelligent
people could be the name of the
magazine, which is interesting and
very different from other magazine
names.
5. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– My research magazines all have bold and specific mast heads that will catch
the interest of their audience. All mast heads font and style matched the
magazines theme and aesthetic.
– Every Magazines feature photo was of a person with some kind of fame
attached. I assumed this is to attract the attention of their target audience,
who presumably knows who the person is.
– Two of the magazines had kickers that targeted a specific part of their
audience and tried to entice people to read with buzz words and statements
about what's inside the issue.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on
work?
– My magazine will follow a similar theme and aesthetic all the way through,
using fonts and specific colours that connote a similar message to each other.
This worked well for the magazines I analysed.
– I may have my main cover photo of a picture of a recognizable person in the
public eye, perhaps an author or a poet.
– I will use kickers to entice and inform the reader of what will be inside the
issue.
7. Audience Profile
Category Demographic Content to appeal to this audience
Age Range Teenagers 15-25
• This age demographic will like my content
because the style aesthetic will match what is
popular today in modern day teen culture. Also
the content inside is too mature for someone of a
younger age range, but perhaps too youthful for
an older age range.
Gender Primarily female
• Of course males can read this and will like the
content inside, but the light airy colours of the
magazine will stereotypically attract a female
audience.
Psychographic
Social conscious
type A, balanced.
• My product will appeal to this type of audience
because to like books and poetry and writing you
are more likely to care about the world around
you and want to make a difference.
Social Status
Middle class,
upper class
• Of course people of a different social status might
be interested in the content inside the magazine.
However people of that class may have more
important things to purchase every week beside a
recreational magazine.
